Please what’s the moomin reference I’m dying to know

*breaths deeply in two year long hyperfixation* wELL

I've tried to write this post a Few times without going into a full essay about what moomin is, as that's Not necessary for answering the question. however, I am unfortunately me and this is the Writes Essays Blog. so I've simply decided I will be a nuisance instead.

but the plus side is that I've been thinking about writing about some of my other fandoms here for a while ! so, for a crash course on the franchise:

“moomin,” “the moomins,” or “moominvalley” is a franchise originally stemming from first novels and then comics written in the 1940s-50s by the finnish author tove jansson, which has since ballooned with Many adaptations and other such goodies (like themeparks and games).

it’s most popular adaptation is hands down the 90s anime adaptation ! which took tove’s charming designs and calming atmosphere and kicked it up to 11 with a long-form slice of life series

but all versions have their own particular flair and tone, even two versions created by tove herself are Very different. with the comics having a focus in on the absurd and comedic and the novels, while certainly Having those elements, also focus in on more serious themes and melancholy!

(here's a brief rundown for the differences in the adaptations for anyone interested ! [Link])

of course, moomin was a relatively unknown entity in the us because it never officially released here, but there was a brief boom here on tumblr in 2019 thanks to the release of a new adaption (called moominvalley)!

it was a perfect storm for a couple reasons:

1: while it can be a bit difficult to track down the series in the us, the Characters are all extremely accessible. with their designs alone you can pick up on who and what the main cast are both Quickly and Scarily Accurately, with the fandom largely rising Before most people had found access to the content itself flkjfdaskjkjl

they're Incredibly Simple characters that still lend themselves well to complexity. they aren't blank slates in the slightest, but they're easy to Bend and reimagine and flesh out. which is really appealing to fandom spaces!

2: having multiple different fleshed out iterations to choose from meant that if you looked you could most likely find something that suited your taste! (it'd be an incredibly accessible franchise if they'd actually make their content Accessible world wide)

3: this is Especially relevant in how the franchise can act as both escapism and catharsis. the 90s anime especially is a comfortable cottage-core fantasy to sink yourself into and forget the woes of real world (something that was about to become Very relevant in 2019), but the novels were specifically written for an audience that was actively living through war.

and while tove never wanted to make the franchise Dark or Gritty, she wanted to create a series that could help children process and come to terms with some of the feelings they Would realistically be experiencing. one of the very first novels is "Comet in Moominland," where a great comet is coming down to crash into the earth. it still engages with comedy and with the absurd, and of course nobody Dies, but it was very intentionally trying to create an accessible outlet to understand Tragedy and Fear. among lots of other things ! and this is, of course, tempered with the warm comforts of friends and family and community.

I think there's a lot to be gained by sifting through this franchise Now honestly. something that can both Distract from the bleakness and help process it, with a certain gentleness either way.

4: tove jansson was an Incredibly queer woman, and this absolutely bleeds into her work and the adaptations that followed!

while inspiration isn't an Exact one-to-one, tove Has spoken about her inspirations for her characters before. moomin (the character) draws a great deal from herself while snufkin, moomin's "best friend" and a funny little beastie, draws from her lovers both in personality and in relationship to moomin!

a big inspiration for snufkin was a man who had nearly been her husband, a vagabond and a socialist for that matter. the official moomin site (which is cannot stress enough, is representative of the franchise itself and heavily curated) describes That as follows [Link]:

In many ways the relationship of Moomintroll (Tove’s alter-ego) and Snufkin describes the relationship between Tove and Atos. Moomintroll admires Snufkin who still is quite distant and very often Moomintroll is also experiencing a deep sense of longing and yearning when Snufkin is leaving to his adventures or choosing to be at peace with his own thoughts. Moomintroll tries to understand Snufkin’s desire for freedom, even though the waiting is not easy.

Just like Tove admired Atos and just like Tove waited for Atos, his love confessions and commitment. [End transcription]

but it was Also based, in part, on the woman who was her wife in all but legality. [Link 1, Link 2] Having met some time 1956 and having stayed life long partners until tove's death in 2001.

they'd built a home together on an island where they'd go to stay every summer, enjoying their own travels and adventures along the way !

come winter, moomin would pine for snufkin as he made his yearly travel down south, but the spring and summer months would always bring snufkin's return! and all the love and warmth that came with him uwu

How exactly that bleeds through in the franchise itself is well. Extensive. picking literally any iteration and trying to lay out, in full, the queer themes present would be an essay longer than this one. so instead have a small selection to illustration the point:

now, naturally, this was (and is) queercoding rather than explicit representation, but this was a queer woman pushing the boundaries of what was allowed to Be in children's media starting in the 1940s and onwards.

there's something About a woman who lived a full and happy life with the woman she loved, pouring that love into her life's work to create a foundation of care and acceptance for the generation that'd come after her, only to see a resurgence of queer teens See her and say what she wasn't allowed to out loud.

which brings us to !

5: the general blanket of pure acceptance radiating from the series.

that's not necessarily anything New for a children's franchise, but in combination with everything else it creates an environment for an absolute comfort series. this fragment of an article about the series has far and away wormed it's way into my mind in some irreversible way (and that's quite a good thing) [Link]:

In most fiction, family is what you escape from if you want to fulfill yourself. For Jansson, family is a place of tolerance, where we can fail and become ourselves. Her experience of growing up gay is there in Snufkin – who is all the more loved for being different. Like the prodigal son, everyone is so thrilled to see him, no one ever asks him where he has been. It’s there too, in Too-Ticky, Jansson’s portrait of her partner. And above all it’s there in the wonderful story where Moomintroll is transformed into the bug-eyed King of California, and his mother recognises him straight away. [End transcription]

the quickest and most accurate description for this series, this franchise as a whole, that I could give is Warmth.

that's not to say that it's All roses. tove herself was an icon, but moomin company is a Company in charge of a franchise in the same ball park as disney properties. but considering there's no way to legally support moomin in the states I'd say the morality of engaging with it on that basis isn't exactly the most pressing of issues.

now with all of That out of my system: the actual information relevant to the comparison.

one of the stories in moomin (the novels, the 90s anime, and the 2019 adaptation, though I'm most familiar with the latter) is "The Invisible Child." [Link]

it's the story of ninny, an invisible child that moomin and co find and bring into their home to try to figure out Why she's invisible and how to fix it.

as we come to find out, ninny went invisible and lost her voice (even the ink on paper she tried to write on going invisible) because she'd been made to Feel invisible through the neglect of her aunt.

the moomins help ninny find her confidence again, with small aspects coming back to her as they make progress and regressing as they make missteps. but the ultimate point is that she needs to feel Seen and Heard.

that feeling of not having a voice, of not having a Presence, taking on the form of a Physical curse of invisibility.

it's a concept that meshes Extremely well with tommy's situation, even Without the headcanon.

I JUST WANTED TO SAY! you have been like. my biggest inspiration for almost 5 years now, when I first found your YouTube. you completely changed the way I view and create things like ocs, worlds, creatures and art. the way I use color and view anatomy, as well as fuck- my own GENDER. your comics and lore and charming videos are so inspiring to my little baby brain. i wanted to ask where you get like, core story concepts? like god brand, fall warmed, ect?

Wailingggg thank you so much!!! It's insane to me to think that my arts had that large of an impact on you 😭. But for sure I can talk about that! Most of my core story ideas just come from me liking groups of characters I've made then deciding what tone I feel their interactions suit for a story, if that makes sense?

So Fall Warmed was initially a group of moomin ocs! Moomins already got a very particular tone that I wanted to keep when nudging it into my own setting and thing. So like more grounded character stories ft some odd ball creatures ft interesting and nuanced character concepts and reflections ect. Then times it with what I want to achieve from the comic ig so I wanted a practice comic for paneling and character interaction. Meaning a lot of them are gonna be short slice of life feeling events that explore characters and the setting in chunks instead of linearly ect!

God brand was like 3 weird furries that I made to vent specific emotions through, so making them into a story it's like yeah for sure these guys need to be exceptionally dramatic and emotionally driven. I also really wanted a protag that had to go through extreme trauma and had their reality shaped by it in very intrusive ways, ways that they'd eventually deal with and understand if I ever do something with god brand again ect ect. Weasels just an exaggerated story to hit the same emotional struggle which is processing extreme trauma and not being a clean victim cause I find it cathartic. It's a thread I have with other main characters I write haha (coughs at damian)

I hope any of that makes sense! I write from my gut a lot so this is just me trying to be technical abt stories I very much just develop on a whim based on what feels good, interesting or satisfying to my own brain.

Part 3 of Moominvalley park

Despite my earlier complaints the gallery was quite stunning. This diorama of Moominvalley was especially fun to look at and find every little creature of the valley! Also I learned some facts/ lore I learned from the books that I didn’t know! Such as that the feather on Snufkins hat comes from an eagle who attempted to attack the Moomin’s lol and that apparently older Moomin’s start to like milk a whole lot then in their youth (this specific fact came from one of the book excerpts where mama is making Moomin tea/ coffee and remembers he prefers marmalade)

The gallery was mainly built upon explaining Moomin family values and the core lessons the characters learn. With a special exhibit showing the symbolism and importance of the food depicted in the series, specifically coffee, and pancakes! I couldn’t take pictures but they also had bits and pieces of the Moomin house Tove and Tuulickki built on display that came from the Museum in Finland. 💕

either the left hand of darkness by ursula k le guin or the master and margarita by mikail bulgakov, ive been wanting to read them both for ages i was rlly happy to be able to !!

hm probably like the girl who reads on the metro by christine féret-fleury i only read it bc my auntie gave me it and it was like fun it did what it needed to do it just. didn't need to do much :S v cheesy and cliche. i did like that she didnt shag the main guy i thought that was going to happen but there was no romantic subplot <3

already mentioned the girl who reads on the metro (french) + the master and margarita (russian), also sophie's world (norwegian), the core of the sun by johanna sinisalo (finnish) & a few of the moomin books (swedish) <3 all translated into english ofc -_-

For the ask game!

Do you stick to canon when writing the characters? If we're talking about Moomin, which one do you prefer going with when writing your fics? (this includes the world and things like characterizations)

Thank you for asking!! I'm putting this under a read more because it got a little too long, haha XD

OKAY, so if we're talking strictly Moomins, then this is a great time for the "Is Snufmin canon?" question. Because, like, technically Snufmin is not romantically canon, which immediately puts all of my Moomin fanfictions on the "not canon" side of the line. However, I genuinely do feel like the subtext, the constant mentions of "pining" in the books, and the history of Tove's life in general is enough to qualify Snufmin as canon. So in that case, yes, I do try to stick to canon when writing the characters. And so far, people seem to like my characterizations for them, so I must be doing something right!

I love fantasy the most, and Moominvalley has such great lore and creativity behind it! Plus, since there's so much "canon" material to choose from this gives me a LOT of leeway when writing them which I really love <3

Fanfiction in general for me has pretty consistently been my way to write romance for the ships I love, and I'd say at least half the time these ships aren't canon. Usually, I'll see a character dynamic I really like (either a dynamic that was presented in the piece of media itself, or a dynamic I've seen in other fanfictions/fanart for), and I'll start to get ideas for it.

And, honestly, I almost always write AUs, which I believe would immediately make my works not canon. But I really like AUs, because it allows me to tweak characters' personalities a bit to fit the new world while still keeping their core traits. I.e. if I put fantasy characters into a high school, then their basic personality and internal motivations, so to speak, would stay the same, but relate to high school drama/hijinks. And just the opposite if I give characters magic they didn't have before; their personalities would stay the same, but now I get to imagine how they'd react to getting new powers, or having grown up with these powers in the first place. (Speaking about Moomins again, you can see my love for AUs in my longer fics via the soulmate AU and the mermaid AU [which I know you've read both of so XD]).

If we're talking about sticking to canon in regards to the worlds the characters are in, that kind of just depends on the fic I'm writing. If I'm going to be writing a high school or college fic for a show that doesn't have that setting, then the fic will definitely not be sticking to canon. For Moomins, I really love Moominvalley so I'll try to stick to that setting, but since it is a fantastical land I have no qualms about adding in other areas they can visit (like the nearby library I put in Red Strings).

That being said, I do like to imagine the Moomin characters in different worlds, too. I have idly been thinking of a "City Moomins" AU which is, as it sounds, the Moomin characters but in a huge city and how they'd respond to such an environment.

So, long story short, canon doesn't really matter to me. I write what I write while keeping the characters as in character as possible depending on the setting! Especially for my longer fics I tend to deviate from canon. For my one-shots, those can be fairly canon adjacent!

As for my selections, things got much more personal than I’d expected lol. Thanks for reading, and hope you’re having a great day! Alright, here goes: 1. Swiss Army Man Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HieFlfAkwc This is my favorite movie of all time, and I’m not sure anything will ever dethrone it. Every single aspect of this movie is beautiful, and it only gets better as you learn about how the movie was made. It’s a movie of very crude humor and deep messages (one of the movie’s taglines is “the first fart will make you laugh, the last will make you cry”). Lots of folks get different messages and meanings from this movie because there’s oodles of symbolism, but at the movie’s core is a message about growth, accepting who you are and who you were, and learning to love yourself and admit your past mistakes and growing past them (as well as thinking with your heart and head instead of your dick lol). Ok I have to stop now, but please watch this movie if you ever get a chance (it’s on Netflix right now btw). TW: for suicide and death 2. Half Wet Full video: https://vimeo.com/98447328 This may be cheating as it’s a short film, but Half Wet is very comforting and near and dear to my heart. I don’t think I’ve gone a year without seeing it at least once since discovering it. It’s beautiful in its art, A E S T H E T I C, and audio, and while it may come across as a little abstract it’s very fun to watch and quote! 3. This is a TV series rather than a film, but it is second to none when it comes to providing comfort and positive feelings. The link above leads to the episode “The Secret Dish” (as well as the playlist) because it was the very first episode I watched which got me into the series after listening to a friend’s recommendation! The world of the Moomins is full of nature, slow paced, charming, and magical and this is reflected in the music, every character, the stories, and just everything. This series got me through college and helped so much during one of the worst periods of my life (so far), and maybe it will do right by you too. 4. Mr. Bean’s Holiday *SPOILER* Final Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXS1LMaU7TM This movie is one of my “go-to” feel good films. A silly man goes on a silly vacation. Every location is beautiful, the humor is jolly good fun, and it’s not a film you really need to focus on if you just want something nice on. Additionally, the final scene of the movie (which is the link above) is PURE CATHARSIS and the greatest “end of a journey” scene that I can think of, set to wonderful music. 5. The Sonic the Hedgehog OVA Full movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxhMYk_xljQ This was the favorite movie of my childhood. The animation is that 90′s anime aesthetic that’s so nice to look at, it’s extremely quotable, and it’s a must watch for any Sonic fan imo. This is on this list because while the movie itself isn’t necessarily comforting, it captured my “childlike wonder” and imagination form playing classic Sonic games back in the day so well and rewatching the movie brings back that feeling every time. 6. Jurassic Park Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc0UehYemQA This is also an odd choice for a “comfort film” list, haha, but allow me to explain. I think the first minute of the trailer for this movie (linked above) perfectly encapsulates the way I feel about this movie. The sheer sense of awe and wonder as these dinosaurs and park itself are all brought to life on the big screen. This film is a labor of love and fantastic filmmaking, and when I think of the concept of “film” itself Jurassic Park is my go-to movie. 7. On Your Mark Full video: https://www.dailymotion.com/embed/video/x2y2269 (It takes about a minute for the lyrics to kick in) This is another “cheat” in that it’s not a feature length film, but this music video animated by Studio Ghibli tells a full story (with multiple endings by the way) all the same. The lyrics and visuals present a message of hope and freedom, and it helps to come back to this music video from time to time, especially in times like right now. The wind blew the curtains open lightly. You rubbed your arms before getting up to close them. As you were closing them, you heard a ping from your phone. You sighed, walking back to your bed. You picked your phone up from the nightstand and saw you had a text from your boyfriend, Renjun. He wasn’t the type to take you to dates. He did take you on dates, he just didn’t like taking you often. He doesn’t like skinship as much as you did so you rarely got to hug or hold hands. In conclusion, he’s really grumpy. You unlocked your phone and opened the message. Your eyes widened at the text. You threw your phone on the bed and then started doing a happy dance.

Renjun🗿: Get ready y/n. I’m coming over for a movie night. Bye.

You stopped dancing and grabbed your phone again.

You: Will do sir🙃 Bring snacks pleaseeee

You grabbed a towel some shorts and a plain shirt then grabbed your underwear. You made your way to the shower and played some music in your phone. You stripped your clothes off then got into the shower. You turn the faucet on, letting the warm water hit your cold skin. Once you finished showering, you got out of the shower, you dried your body then changed. You grabbed your dirty clothes and put it in the dirty bin, walking down into the living room. You saw Renjun sitting on your couch watching some television like it’s his house. “What the fuck? Renjun, how’d you get in?” He turned to look at you then looked back at the television. “Extra key.” He simply said. You scoffed crossing your arms. “How did you know about that key?” “I’ve seen you pull it out under the pot. You should change the hiding place.” He laughed then turned to you.

“What’s so funny?” You tilted your head. “You’re so stupid sometimes and it makes me laugh.” He says bursting out laughing. “Hey! So not funny!” You yelled throwing a pillow that was in front of him. He looked down at your bare legs then up to your face. “Where’s the snacks?” You asked. “Kitchen counter.” You walked to the kitchen counter grabbing the popcorn bag. You removed the plastic packaging and then placed the popcorn bag into the microwave, setting the timer for 3 minutes. “What type of drink?” You asked. “Um. I’ll get some water.” You got two water bottles and went to where Renjun was seated. “Here ya go.” You said handing him his water. He grabs it and mumbles a “thank you.”

You walked back into the kitchen waiting for the popcorn to be ready. “What type of movie do you wanna watch?” Renjun asked. “I don’t know. You pick.” You said. “What about-“ Renjun was interrupted by the beeping of the microwave. I laughed and grabbed the popcorn bag out by grabbing the corner. You looked at Renjun and he rolled his eyes. “As I was saying, can we just watch a show?” He asked. You already knew what show he wanted to watch. “Ok sure.” You responded. He smiled and then went to the shows category. “Hm. What about-“ “moomin? I knew you wanted to watch that.” You cut him off. You took a bowl out of the cabinet and emptied the popcorn bag and poured the popcorn in the bowl. You walked into the living room and set the bowl down onto the coffee table. “Go ahead. Start it.” You smiled. “Thanks babe.” He said and grabbed some popcorn before stuffing it into his mouth. You grabbed the blanket that was folded neatly on the couch and covered yourself in it.

“I’m cold. Let me be in the blanket.” You turned your head to find a pouting Renjun. “Ok ok.” You said and put the blanket over him. You grabbed your phone because you got bored of the show. You decided to text your friend, Mark. You guys sent texts back and forth before he had to leave. You sighed dropping your phone onto the couch. “What’s wrong?” Renjun asked. “Nothing. I’m just bored. Can we watch a movie instead?” He nodded his head and stopped the show. “Just put something random.” You said grabbing some popcorn and eating it. He put a random movie and you guys started to watch it. The movie was about half way done when you felt a hand on your thigh. You looked at him but saw him looking at the movie so you ignored it because Renjun probably placed there on accident. You felt his hand start to move up closer to your core. You grabbed his hand and took it off your thigh. He placed it back and slipped his hand into your shorts. You looked at him wide-eyed and got up. “R-Renjun what are you doing!?” You asked shocked. “I want to have some fun y/n.” He said slipping his finger into your now soaked womanhood.

You gasped at the feeling. “So wet already? For me?” He chuckled evilly. “Renjun. W-what-“ You cut yourself off with a chocked moan. He took his finger out and harshly placed it back in. “You like that? Hm?” You bit your lip trying to hold back your moans. “Don’t hold back. I want to hear your pretty moans.” He whispered, nibbling your ear lobe. “Fuck.” You cried out as he added another finger while curling them. He moved his thumb and started to massage your throbbing nib. You felt your lips part. He looked up at you smirking. “You want something?” He asked pushing down on your nib. “P-please Renjun.” You whimpered. “Please what?” “PLEASE FUCK ME!” You jerked your hips onto his fingers but he quickly pulled away, leaving you feel empty. You looked at him about to cry. He pulled you onto his lap. Now you were straddling him. He threw his head back when you started grinding on his hard on. You started to unzip his pants and then removed them along with his boxers.

He groaned, feeling the cold air against his member. He reached back to the condom and opened the condom. He placed it onto his hard member. You aligned your core with his member and slid down onto his member. You cried out in pain as you clenched around him. “You’re so tight baby.” He said grabbing your hips. You started to move up and down. You started to ride him. You moaned as you felt his hand wrap around your throat. His other hand guiding you and making you move faster. Once you got the hang of it, he let go. The sound of skin slapping against each other, moans, and groans filled the room. He spanked you harshly multiple times while choking you lightly. “I-I’m close!” You yelled out. You clenched around him. You felt him twitch insides you which meant he was near. His thrust got sloppier and faster. “F-FUCK Y/N!” He moaned out before releasing his seed in the condom. You came soon after but he continued to slam himself in and out of you. “R-Renjun. Fuck.” You whimpered out. You arched your back feeling yourself about to cum again. A long moan of his name left your lips while your collapsed onto him. He removed you from him and threw the condom away. “I’m sorry baby. Are you ok? Did I hurt you y/n?” He asked cupping your face. Name ten favourite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.) There was something about tagging 10 people, but firstly, I ignore the rules anyway, and secondly, it’s been ages ago in tumblr years, so I’m not sure who was and wasn’t tagged?

1) Ciri, The Witcher

So I’m going to shock you all, and start with her. Yes, I know. Nobody saw that coming. I’m still in awe at what CDPR did with her character (although I have a list of issues at how her past traumas were dealt with, check my fics for a comprehensive list) and turned the annoying book teenager into this fascinating, fun, fierce, flawed bby who deserves everything that’s good. And I shall bloody provide, as long as I have ideas. Ciri/Happiness is my OTP.

2) Chrisjen Avasarala, the Expanse

What. A. Character. Ruthless and cunning and doing whatever she thinks is right, consequences be damned. But ultimately all her choices come from her core belief as to what’s right for Earth (first, then/)and for humanity as a whole. And someone ( @rikerssexblouse was it your post?) rightly pointed out that at no point is she being punished by the narrative for being who she is. She makes mistakes, she loses, like any other character would, but her loses are not a lesson to all small girls out there not to stick your head out. (Staring at you, most of media.) And “Caliban’s War”, where she is one of the POVs, is a fucking DELIGHT.

3) Mara Jade, Star Wars

I do have a type, no? I remember reading “Heir to the Empire” the year it was released (yes, I’m Old) and falling in love with her. I love sarcastic badass women so bloody much. I could recite scenes from “Vision of the Future” from memory. Mara/Luke is probably the only real OTP of mine.

4) Granny Esmeralda "Esme" Weatherwax, the Discworld

I love her. The Shepherd's Crown broke me and I'm still not over it.

5) Seven of Nine, "Star Trek Picard" (only)

Tired badass warrior women who have seen some shit but keep on kicking butts? And look like that?
