SO! I finished the game, and here are my thoughts.

As stated previously--and I'm sure a lot of people have already given praise for--the art and music are just...beautiful. It's a simple game with a simple story, and yet it drives home this warm and fuzzy feeling that makes a home in your core. It's very sweet.

Playing from Snufkin's perspective as opposed to the moomin family really does provide us with a different viewpoint and there are pros and cons to it. He's very sassy and has little patience for anyone who gets in the way of his mission, though he remains kind to people in need of help.

Now there is a con I have that is more of a personal gripe than one that hurts the game. If you know me by now, you probably know that I don't care much for snufmin. I think it's sweet, and admittedly I thought playing from Snufkin's pov and how he was focused on saving Moomin helped the ship feel a little more balanced to me. It was nice to see Snufkin express a similar amount of love and care for Moomin that Moomin would show should the roles have been reversed. Having said that, I'm still very mid about it, especially when the narrative feels like everyone gets pushed aside for them to reunite/be together. I'm not saying that the game completely shoved everyone aside though, I loved adventuring with My and Sniff, and being able to do little quests for the rest of the valley-goers. Not gonna lie, though, kinda miffed about Snorkmaiden being one of the lesser characters in the story. Including her in the game at all felt more like an obligation since she's one of the main cast, and it's sad to think that the game wouldn't change at all if she were excluded. Even from a fandom shipping standpoint, I kinda hate the exclusion of Snorkmaiden especially, but that's a whole different spiel. I would've loved more with her and Snufkin, maybe even if they teamed up to help Moomin, but it's whatever I guess..

Overall it was aesthetically beautiful, the story was simple and cute, as was the gameplay. It's an E for Everyone game that was intended for not only fans to enjoy, but parents playing with their kids too, so it's not too complex and it makes for a nice shared adventure.

I will definitely go back and work on getting the rest of the achievements, and I still need to snag some screencaps I missed. Interacting with Little My as Snufkin was always hilarious, like they're so sassy with each other and Snufkin's patience is already thin with everything going on. Little My is legit a mood though:

Snufkin: "They took Moomin! We have to save Moomin!"

Little My: "SCREW THAT NOISE I'M GETTING TREASURE!"

They had their moments and it was delightful xD

lewis coming to really appreciate val during nico and jenson's stay? nico has major pregnancy cravings and mood swings, and while he is very sweet to val, jenson and lewis have to cope with a lot of crying and shouting and outrage because how dare lewis treat val like that he deserves so much better and i expected better of you! val always manages to soothe nico, and lewis comes to see how kind and wise val is, and possibly realise that while nico is beautiful and clever, he may have dodged a bullet there

I'd ne'er put much thought into flying. Snork has though, it seems. A ship that can fly, quite the thing! Imagine, another golden age fer piracy, all the way up in a different wild blue. 'Cept o'course if ye fall overboard, it's less Davey Jones an' more broken bones. At least the burial's still free! I Imagine the hole you'd make oughta be at least six feet deep. Maybe they ought t' tie rope to one another so they just dangle over the side a bit instead? [A small doodle of a grumpy looking moomin with an eyepatch dangling from a rope in the clouds below a flying ship fills the gap before the next line] 

Apologies on the grim jokes. Somethin' 'bout adventurin' brings back a bit o' the old me. Beneath my admittedly cuddly exterior these days, turns out I'm still a rough ol' sea dog at heart. Moominmama stuck a big ol' jar of things in my bag when I weren't lookin'. Lots of thoughtful things, little though they may be. A fine letter, as well. Her handwriting's a mite prettier than mine. Gon' stick it the next page over. She's a kind woman, and I've no doubt within her lies a raucous beast. Her husband writes about his "stormy youth", but I'd bet Moominmama's got some memoirs of her own t' write. 

Made landfall somewhere flat and dry in what I assume is Italy. Bound t' be a long trek to civilization, but that's all part o' the journey. Snork dropped me off, headed somewhere else. He said somethin' 'bout "making some adjustments" afore he goes off t' find his precious cargo. It's not often I find myself feeling that perhaps I'm in over me head, but if I'm not over me head, I'm at least over me snout. Got to thinkin' so much on people, and being in a strange place, and whether I'll like the food or what have ye, I ne'er even thought on where I were landing or even where I were going. Fixin' t' make camp fer now and see that I can't find my way toward something a lil more populated come morning. The adventure's only just begun.

The world's changed a lot since you came to the valley, and pirates aren't quite as common as they used to be.

Snufkin i love this version of him. Hes so little. Like personality wise. He has his wisdom sure but like in the same way a kid with shitty parents does. Like you know a lot due to your circumstances but you are also young and have not seen much. Hes me and that is why he is my pfp. Man says "bye" by just leaving without warning and besties that is my toxic trait!!! Also I have the hot take that his need to not want to constrain something by loving it too much is actualllly about how he doesnt want to like. Force moomin to always wait for him. I think hes very afraid of trapping moomin rather than moomin trapping him. Whether this is about romantic or platonic feelings is irrelevant. I am this way about everyone.

I really want more snorkmaiden development all of her character arcs seem to be second to jer relationship with moomin. Which wpuld be fine if moomin wasnt the main character? Because she should basically then be the 2nd character with major plot stuff going on. Shes gotten more stuff as weve gone on (esp with snorks intro in s3) and i hope s4 really delves into her character because i like her character a lot!

Speaking of moomin and Snorkmaiden's relationship! It's very light on the themes like most of their early stuff is snorkmaiden wanting a stronk man and moomin being a soft boi which was okay thematically. Could be better but it wasnt the worst. But now its just "look at that relationship. Wow. Sure is a relationship!" Where. Where are the themes. Like you have an amazing set up theme with moomin living at the top of a tower and there was the one episode that shows snorkmaiden playing with a knight figurine or something and it would be awesome to have snorkmaiden be moomin's knight in shining armour you know role reversal on the manly knight saving the princess in the tower. But they havent really shown they were gonna go down that route since moomin came back from the island. And that would be fine, except. Well. Moomin does have a relationship with another character that has A Lot of themes! Including framing moomin as a princess-in-the-tower. Like im sorry but why are they giving snufkin and moomin so many romatic themes if theyre not even gonna follow through? Im not letting myself get my hopes up, we're being queerbaited my dudes that mountain ep was like. ???????? As someone who went to film school and LITERALLY STUDIES THEMES IN MOTION PICTURES LIKE FILM AND TV whaaat the fuck. Its queer baiting im sorry and it pisses me off so much. Theyre shorting snorkmaidens character to queerbait us with snufmin this isnt what anyone wanted me to say but its true and everyone needs to relunctantly accept it

Do you think Moominmamma has a thirst for thrills like Pappa? It’s certainly there, I imagine, but in a different form, sorted differently among many other priorities and wants.

I believe that while Moominmamma is very willing to go along with whatever Moominpappa drags her into and can handle them very well, I don't think she's much of a thrill seeker even in a less... intense extent. Well, except for possibly the 2019 version, but I much more avidly read the comics and books and watch the 90s series and so my perception of her is more attached to those. So if you're asking about the Mamma with a 3rd physical dimension, I would say yes. Other versions of her, however...

Moominmamma has always been very, very comfortable in her status quo, she doesn't particularly enjoy new experiences if they last too long for her comfort. She's a technophobe, she'd be the first person to want to go back home if something hasn't gone wrong yet (though she wouldn't say it outright), she never instigates the story or conflict unless it's due to her own anxiety (e.i. feeling pressured by Mrs. Fillyjonk to be a proper lady or joining every club in the Valley because she doesn't want to say no to people) with only one exception of wanting to go back in time because of her technophobia, or someone else is pushing the main conflict and she's the first victim.

Moominpappa will attempt whatever endeavor he finds desirable and she will follow holding him by the tail just so he isn't alone or disappear in the process. Moominmamma may enjoy it for some time, since Moominpappa would also enjoy it and much of what she's willing to do is to satisfy her husband's needs, but she will always completely accept wanting to go back once it's brought up OR, if they're stuck for a longer while, want to make their situation much more homely.

Moominpappa craves adventure because the thrill of almost dying in a frozen lake was the first positive feeling he's had after a long ✨misunderstood youth✨ and that stuck with him far more than he probably even realizes. Right after adventure his biggest craving is attention, quite literally stating something of this nature in his memoirs;

“One of my characteristics is wanting to make an impression at any price by awakening admiration, sympathy, fright, or, on the whole, any feelings that include interest. That's probably because of my unappreciated childhood.”

Moominmamma, on the other hand, doesn't bear desires like this. Her past is only very speculative; we know of her parents only by this line in Moominpappa at Sea:

He must try getting in the right mood, like his father-in-law used to do. All her life, his mother-in-law had gone round dropping things everywhere or leaving them behind and forgetting where she had left them. Then his father-in-law would turn on something in his brain. That’s all that was needed. He always found things after that. Then he used to say: ‘Here’s your old junk,’ but in a kind way.

We know her grandma possessed a book of special recipes for ailments and alike, Moominmamma once told them of a technique her mother used when breaking glass (90s: the Eclipse), and she had an obsession with appearance in her youth even after Moominpappa rescued her from the storm. We do have a family photograph of her family in Moominland Midwinter that was taken in 1878 in Helsingfors (the swedish name for Finland's capital, Helsinki) and the family itself seemed wealthy but rather unhappy.

We don't gets much further information but assuming that the book takes place roughly around the mid-late 1900s during which the series is written, one of the children in the photo could as well be one of her parents. In a Lars comic we also get to meet Moominmamma's great great grandmother via time traveling who was an upper-class woman named Clotilde, and lived with a man named Rufus who bore a monocle (about as rich stereotype as you can get, also both of them were moomins I'm not sure I have to clarify but just in case). All this plus her irrational fear of having maids (Moominmamma's Maid, Tove comic) leads me to believe she was rather well-off if not rich before she was lost in a storm, though she would've been quite sheltered if she didn't know what a theater was.

All this to say, while Moominmamma can get out of her way to do something exciting with her husband, she is tremendously comfortable living domestically and having a routine. I could list off some examples but this answer is already long as it is.

So, uh, tl;dr:

I don't think Moominmamma is a thrill seeker by any means, but she's willing to go along with her husband's thrill seeking. And it's honestly rather interesting to consider. I think her not being one doesn't necessarily make her boring, in fact, it makes her relationship with Moominpappa more interesting and gives more to consider when it comes to how she interacts with the world. Having such an intense and stubborn creature be with a more calm and flexible one can be really entertaining, but both of them have their own things going on, it's just that Moominpappa naturally pushes his issues onto others whether or not they ask for it and Moominmamma seems to withhold herself for the sake of others.

P.s. I forgot to mention in an English letter written by Tove as Moominmamma, she implies that Moominmamma dropped out of school once she got bored of it and says Moomins in general do that. So. Make of that what you will. Moominmamma definitely doesn't like boredom that much judging from that, perhaps another reason why she married Moominpappa.

💘 At first it fluctuated with how I was doing. When I met @edaworks I recognized I was not in the headspace for some of the really emotionally charged stuff that happens before the gang returns to Sanctuary. Because I was doing much better in comparison. Now I'm better able to separate my characters from me. I'm able to dissect the parts of my psychology I want to and graft them onto the characters without having to inhabit the headspace/mood as though I was an actor. Writing upset Olivia still kills me though - I want her to do better, mentally, but it'll take her time. She'll get there.

💛 “The only true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing”. Always stay curious and remain humble to the whiplash of the world. No one can be a master of writing in the way you could point out masters of say, oil painting. I am not hot shit, I am so willing to be put in my place as a Shit Writer I placed an excerpt from Han Kang's The Fruit of My Woman at the beginning of Chapter 11 because it impressed me and I wish I wrote that passage and it helped inspire me: This is much better, read this first. Be willing to have opinions on books everyone else likes. For example I find Kerouac's On The Road a tremendous bore when it was pushed in my hands by someone who insisted it was the best book they'd ever read. Be inspired by everything. Go hiking. Read Wikipedia pages about cuisines that aren't from your culture and read National Geographic and look at art and myths. Read House of Leaves and James Joyce Ulysses and watch Akira and Moomin. Be observant in your day to day. Notice how people talk and act and stutter in conversation. Go to coffee shops and listen to the old farts at the next table over gossip. Write down what people say, keep their letters - I have quotes in 15 year old journals from high school I have to use at any time.

None of the best writing advice has anything to do with writing except, like, "watch your adverbs" or "study your favourite writers" or "mind your grammar". Your writing at any given time is the sum of all you know, yet all we're doing is a big rehashing: everything's been done before. Nothing is original, so anything could be: what's different is the writer. What's your perspective, and how will you tell your Iliad?

🎨 It would be an unbelievable honour to have any scene from my fic done. Just knowing one person was even a little bit inspired to draw out a scene of mine would be a dream come true. I've been meaning to do drawings of the first chapters, not quite in graphic novel form as 1:1 but more vignettes. I miss seeing my characters in Banff, and my mind lingers on the mountain with Livvie watching RJ through her scope, and Jack shaking her hand for the first time and her meeting Dogmeat.

Truly, anything - it would be an honour.

Cons of artist life are sometimes that doing applications for grants is tedious and gives you a bad headache. Pros can be when your brother is an artist too, so you're not alone.

We had agreed to get up early to apply for the same grant before the applications closed today, since we had both been struggling with which project to choose for it, and that had caused a lack of motivation in both of us. I was somehow so tired it was real work just getting up and putting my head in the mindset of selling myself which is always tedious.

But I got up, and went to make smoothies for us, all the while feeling like nothing is going to come off of this and my brain is a cabbage. But somehow my brother managed to change my mood completely with such little things. He came down the stairs and saw I was wearing a pair of shorts he also has, and he said cheerfully: "Hey, team shorts!" and went to change his pyjama pants into those shorts too. They were too cold for him, so he also wore a blanket. But what he said was like a magic word to my meaning -driven brain, suddenly this boring process was an adventure together instead. Then he sipped the smoothie I made and asked: "What is it today? Toothpaste, right?" And that made me laugh. (I like making smoothies, and they are actually good but he likes to guess what's in them and he usually comes up with something idiotic as a joke while he's at it.) And somehow this made me remember how easy it is to lift your mood sometimes. Just a single laugh can give you enough good hormones to make the difference. I tend to be kinda detached from my body and the present sometimes, so it's really beneficial to have someone around who has such an uncomplicated and direct relationship with five senses.

So, my brother ended up being my motivation, and I was his editor. Now I have a headache and no energy, but we completed the applications and they were probably as good as they were ever going to be. Then we watched Moomins to decompress, and now I'm just feeling really happy about living with my family these days.

a moomin kid oc story I've had for a while, but will never have the stamina to draw or write up, is liljekonvalj waking up one year a short time into hibernation (just like her dad). she has a play about discovering snow for a little while, before running into her older sibling hiljainen, who's always awake in winter, just before they're due to leave on their usual trip.

turns out hiljainen doesn't stay skulking around the valley like people thought they did (and never questioned, because they're a fan of the season, and being comfortable in their own company isn't out of the ordinary for them) - but actually ventures very far out of it most years, by hopping different trains and such. they've never told anyone about it because it's their little secret adventure, and sharing it would spoil that. as would their parents' worry if they ever found out; the moominkids are pretty free range, as you can imagine, but skipping several towns over in the dead of winter is another story. moomin in particular would be beside himself.

so after a little bit of squabble, blackmailing, etc. hiljainen agrees to let lilja come along with them, so long as she's NOT a bother. after a long walk to the nearest station, they sneak aboard a train as hiljainen does each year, and settle down in one of the compartments. a seasoned rider like hiljainen is usually good at making themselves scarce when the ticket inspector rolls around, but this time they end up misjudging it, and get caught red-pawed. of course, hiljainen's also a seasoned liar.

they quickly explain that it's their first time on a train, sir, and we had them with us, honest! but their tickets must have been misplaced somewhere, we're ever so sorry ("sorry, so sorry" echoes lilja, pitifully). "where are your parents, then?" asks the inspector. "they're... not with us, sir" they reply, with a mournful tone. and the inspector's slightly sceptical about this sad orphan act, but doesn't wanna push it, so eventually is like, well. fine. I'll let you off just this once.

the ticket inspector leaves, and their celebrations about getting away with it are short-lived, when they look out across the station they've stopped at from their carriage window - and see snufkin on the other platform, looking right back. but he's not really staring at them, right? he's so far away. he could be looking at something else. right?

both watch in mild horror as their dad breaks out into something more brisk than a casual walk. they're not sure he's running, exactly, but it seems... purposeful. but the train's sounding its whistle now, so he'll never make it in time - and as it soon pulls away again, the kids sink back in their seats in relief. until a few minutes later, when a very familiar coughing begins to echo through the carriage. and the sound of tottering heels soon comes to a stop somewhere in the middle

the inspector's voice is too far to make out, but snufkin's louder, cheerier responses reach their compartment, even through the closed door. "oh, dear. yes, again, I'm afraid. was it you I saw last time, as well? my memory is not what it used to be, you know." their dad's only a middle-aged fellow, but the smoky voice and many layers he dresses in age him a good deal. the inspector must be in a forgiving mood today (just their luck), because they're soon moving up the carriage again. "well," they hear him begin. "this one's occupied; but we're filling up, and I think these two would appreciate your company." there's a knowing light-heartedness in the inspector's tone, the kids notice. they wonder how far snufkinpappa's reputation stretches.

after a few moments pass by both agonisingly slow and far too fast, the door slides open. "is it alright if this gentleman shares a compartment with you two?" the inspector asks. snufkin simply smiles beside him, without recognition. hiljainen and lilja nod numbly, their shock fortunately passing for shyness. the inspector, apparently under the impression kids don't have ears or eyes, or just generally lacking in tact, mumbles something to snufkin about "orphans" and "poor little mites". "is that so," replies snufkin, eyes widening in pity. "well, it's perfectly alright with me, too". they both bid each other goodbye, and snufkin sits in the seat opposite his children.

On a personal level, I've been watching stitching tutorials for this one piece of clothing I want to mend when I have more time! Did you know there's a chain stitch that only requires one hand, opposed to two like with the traditional chain stitch? Fucking great for beginners who don't have a hoop stand! It's called "Reverse chain stitch" 😊

Abelia: do you have a particular piece of jewelry you always wear or can't part with?

Hmmm I can't say I have a favourite yet? But there's this pair that always gets compliments! They are absolutely pretty. Very Sailor Moon vibes is what people say! It's starting to chip at some spots and I know I'm gonna have a hard time discarding them :') here's a clip of me trying them for the first time and doing a haul for my bestie!

Mahonia: what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does?

The short answer is that I don't know. I get inspiration from nature; the quiet, little mostly unnoticed things; music; things people tell me about their lives. It's a little bit of everything. How I express it depends on my mood; writing's been kind of hard for a while, so I've done more art than ever before! I haven't tried to capture a specific emotion on a page yet, but I do have some ideas! (and since it's you, I'll let you know that it's Moomins related! 😘)
