Boyle’s Odyssey
On becoming legitimate businessmen
By the end of the first week of January letters requesting subscriptions to The Tornio Examiner began pouring into the tenement’s mail slot in numbers beyond Boyle’s most optimistic hopes. The residents of the tenement were overjoyed and dedicated themselves to preparing the second edition of their paper. Boyle was even more focused on editing the paper well, Wilhelm kept an eye on Tornio City Hall as he worked there to gauge the reaction of the mayor and The Inspector of the Hemulen Police to The Tornio Examiner, Switchblade became the paper’s street reporter and brought in stories of the realities of being poor in Tornio, and Snusmumrikken helped out wherever he could and observed carefully as the relationship between Switchblade and Boyle grew and the spirit of unity and hope in the tenement’s community grew.
Fortunately, the city’s authorities adopted a “wait and see”approach. It helped that the city aldermen all suspected each other of being behind the leak of city documents spelling out the details of corrupt dealings in the city government that had been disclosed in the first edition of the paper. They were too busy trying to undermine each other to focus on dealing with The Tornio Examiner.
By the end of February, The Tornio Examiner had a solid subscriber base and the paper was not only self-sufficient, it was profitable. So profitable that Boyle and Wilhelm were able to pay for the final repairs and renovations to the tenement building and make it a fully registered building. Wilhelm was able to do the official inspection that he had been covering for not doing since he first came to the building. He passed the building and he didn’t have to lie, much to his and everyone else’s satisfaction.
By the end of March, The Tornio Examiner was basically untouchable by the city authorities. Over half of the city’s population were subscribed to the paper and the members of the tenement’s community had become familiar figures in the city as they delivered papers to homes, businesses, and newsstands. Boyle and Wilhelm had very carefully made sure that every part of the paper’s operation was entirely legitimate and irreproachable.
On the final day of March, Boyle, Switchblade, Wilhelm, Snusmumrikken, and all the residents of the tenement all stood in the street in front of the tenement as workers raised the official sign with The Tornio Examiner’s logo in bold, large letters over the entrance to the building and set it permanently in place. The building’s residents raised a grand cheer and the street party that they had all planned to celebrate the occasion began. The five co-conspirators at the center of the crowd continued to stare at the sign in pride.
“So Boyle, it’s almost Spring. What do you intend to do? You know that I love you, but I won’t force you to stay here. You still have your family and friends in Moominvalley. I’ll understand if you need to go back to them.”, said Switchblade to Boyle.
“I still can’t get over how little you’re like Snufkin, Switchblade. It took him and Moomintroll years to figure out how they really feel about each other. I love you, too. This is my home now. My family will miss me, but they will also be proud of me and what we’ve accomplished together. It’s not like I’ll never see them again. I’ll….WE’LL visit at least once a year in the middle of Summer, when the weather is at its best. I’m never traveling anywhere during Winter again if I can help it. Snusmumrikken, what are you going to do?”, said Boyle.
“I’m going to find my parent, Toft. I’m almost sure that they’re in The Autarch’s estate. I have to make up for a lot of lost time with them. They’ll understand. They know all about starting over. I’m going to gather my things and get going. Thank you all for helping me begin to sort things out. I’ll see you when I see you.”, said Snusmumrikken as they headed back to their room in the tenement.
“Touching scenes and parties are not my thing. I’ll leave you two to your own devices. Just spare me the details. Congratulations, by the way. Just be ready to get started on the next edition of The Tornio Examiner the day after tomorrow.”, said Wilhelm as he returned to his room in the tenement.
Boyle and Switchblade moved into the middle of the crowd of dancers in the middle of the street, embraced tenderly and kissed each other for the first time. The music being played by a Hemulen on a Disk Jockey Table on the other side of the street had just switched to a slow waltz. The pair of lovers danced in perfect time with the music.
“That was good timing!”, said Boyle, “That Hemulen’s pretty good with that thing. Not as good as Sniff is on his albums, but he’ll do.” He embraced Switchblade even closer and they kissed even more passionately as they danced.
The End

Tansy (on the left), is wanderer joxter, the textbook example of chaotic/true neutral. Comes from a clan of vagabonds, the Cheshires, who lead a nomad, onlooker lifestyle. She finds chaos and drama entertaining, observing other people’s pointless, silly and mindless arguments or fights, then acting as a judge, she settles the disagreements, giving cryptic pieces of advice. Carefree, and free spirited, living in the moment. Secretly wishes for a peaceful, quite life. Others might see her as silly and childish and odd, in reality she’s very wise and insightful. Tho still very chaotic and zany, a walking contradiction..
Celandine (on the right), a hemulen train conductor, who, really, just wants to do her job right. Her “hemulenish” passion was never about trains or guiding other passengers, but about traveling. However, she had to give up on her dream of becoming an adventurer pretty early in her life due to family and financial problems. She doesn’t mind her job at all, still, she often daydreams about different, action-filled scenarios and gorgeous landscapes (sometimes distracting her from her duties-). Very diligent, sweet, hardworking and meek. Someone please hug her, tell her she’s doing okay, she needs reassurance and somebody to rant to!

Boyle’s Odyssey
On finding your way around
The following morning, Boyle and Snusmumrikken were the first ones up. Boyle made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the three of them as they waited for Switchblade to wake up. They sat across from each other at the table in slightly uncomfortable silence.
“I’m sorry that I’ve been ignoring you since we found Switchblade, but he….is the reason why I came to Tornio. Why DID you decide to come with me? Cities aren’t your thing at all. I’m grateful for your company, but what are your hopes for this….adventure?”, asked Boyle.
“I’m not entirely sure. I came to Moominvalley to try to undo….a lot of things in my life. I wanted to be a Mumrik like Snufkin, to reset the Moominvalley village so that I could reset my life, but I found out that nothing was what I thought it was. I came along to find out if I could find a path different from the one that I started out on. You need to concentrate on what you came here for. Don’t worry about me. I’m beginning to realize that I need to observe you sorting yourself out to help in sorting myself out. I will always be your friend, just not like Switchblade is.”, said Snusmumrikken.
“Well said! The first order of business is to explain how we got this building to ourselves and remodeled. Feel free to tag along, Snusmumrikken!”, said Switchblade as he casually ate a sandwich.
“Please don’t do that! You’re way too quiet when you try to be!”, said Boyle, breathing hard after Switchblade’s sudden appearance.
Switchblade lead the pair of them back down to the first floor of the tenement and to the apartment in the center of the hallway. He knocked politely on the door and the door was immediately opened by a twenty-eight year old Fillyjonk dressed in a very tidy business suit with a tie and wearing circular glasses.
“Ah, Switchblade. What can I do for you and your….companions?”, they asked in a very formal tone of voice.
“Wilhelm, this is Boyle, the enterprising young Hemulen who’s really responsible for starting all this (at this, he waived his right arm around at their surroundings), and his traveling companion, Snusmumrikken. I brought them to you so that you can explain how you made it possible to make it all real.”, said Switchblade.
“Very well! Please, do come in!”, said Wilhelm, his expression and tone brightening considerably as he ushered his guests into his apartment. Like all the other apartments, it was a small studio. Unlike most of the other inhabitants of the tenement, Wilhelm had crammed furniture and accents into every available inch of space. His bed was a well appointed twin bed set against the wall nearest to the door. There were two tall four drawer filing cabinets against the right hand wall topped with tasteful doilies under two small lamps with colorful shades. Between the two windows on the back wall was a small kitchen table with a luxurious tablecloth and four cushioned chairs. There was longer, heavy, ornately carved wooden table across from the small kitchen area that was clearly used as a food preparation area as it was furnished with a cutting board, a well stocked spice rack and knife and kitchen utensil caddy. On the floor there was a very large, elaborately decorated area rug. There were small, framed paintings on every available space along the walls. Boyle and Snusmumrikken entered slowly, gawking at everything and hardly daring to think of touching anything.
“Switchblade is exaggerating. He’s the one who brought me here in the first place, long before he inspired all of you to do all of this. He’s the one who inspired me to go beyond the letter of the law to help him free all of the young beasts from the detention center. But, please tell me the story of how you came to be here and became part of the effort to restore this building.”, said Boyle, blushing brightly.
“When I first came to this building,”, began Wilhelm, “I represented the Tornio Housing Authority and I was sent here to inspect this building to write up an official recommendation that it be demolished. Naturally, I was very surprised to find Switchblade and his band of street urchins working on it and beginning to make progress rebuilding it. Instead of treating me like an enemy, Switchblade immediately perceived that I wasn’t comfortable with what I was doing. He made me an interesting offer that quickly became irresistible. He could easily guess all of the unjust things the Housing Authority was doing and suggested that I ally myself with him and his gang. I saw that I had a chance to redeem myself. I forged paperwork at the Housing Authority to deed the property to him and his compatriots. I also….redirected city funds to the rebuilding of this tenement. I moved here permanently and began smuggling evidence of the innumerable shady real estate deals perpetrated by city officials here. The filing cabinets that you see here are full of damning documentation that I plan to use to dissuade anyone from stopping the progress that we’ve made here.”, said Wilhelm.
Boyle opened a drawer in one of the filing cabinets and chose a folder of documents at random. As he read the papers within it, his expression became more and more grim and serious.
“That was a wise precaution. But, if city officials found out about just this folder alone, they’d panic and send in the Hemulen Police to destroy all of this evidence and arrest everyone who lives here, and that would be the end of all you’ve accomplished. We have to spread this information as widely as possible, let everyone in Tornio know what’s been done in their name, with their tax money. Switchblade, I know what I want to do here, but I’m going to need all of your help to do it. We’re going to start a newspaper. The city authorities won’t dare touch this place if it’s the location of a legitimate business. Knowing that we have all the goods on them will be a safeguard against them instead of a liability. We’ll have to act surreptitiously and quickly, so they won’t realize what we’re up to until it’s too late.”, said Boyle.
“I love the idea already! Just tell us what we need to do, and we’ll make it happen!”, said Switchblade.

Boyle’s Odyssey
On finding a new home
Switchblade quickly led Boyle and Snusmumrikken down the first floor hallway of his restored tenement.
“Hey, everyone! Guess who’s back to visit us just like I said he would be! Boyle! Come on out and give him the welcome he deserves!”, shouted Switchblade.
Immediately, young beasts popped their heads out of each of the apartment doors. Boyle recognized them all. They were his fellow prisoners from the juvenile detention center. As they saw him, they each came out in the hallway to thank him personally for leading their charge to freedom. It was all more than a little overwhelming. He finally got some breathing room when he, Snusmumrikken, and Switchblade closed the door to the central stairwell of the building that was at the far end of the hallway.
“You found all of them, Switchblade?! That must have taken some time! Why did they all agree to live here with you? How did you all manage to get this building in such good condition in less than a year?! It was on the verge of collapse when we took shelter here in the Spring!”, said Boyle.
“Oh, I’m a beast of grand ambitions when I really put my mind and effort into it. Let’s just say that the prospect of seeing the look you have on your face right now lit a fire under me. As for finding them all, word gets around fast among the poorest beasts in any city! It was easier to restore this place than you’d think, especially since I was offering anyone willing to join in the chance to create a safe haven for themselves. We attracted more willing paws than we knew what to do with in very short order! We had to get creative in acquiring the tools, supplies and most of all the deed to this building, but that’s what we specialize in!”, said Switchblade.
“I suspect that I would rather not know all of the details, but please tell everything that you wish to tell me.”, said Boyle, laughing easily and freely.
“Only if you tell me of your Summer in Moominvalley in return!”, said Switchblade.
As the three of them toured each of the remaining seven floors of the tenement and met the other beasts who lived there, Snusmumrikken felt themself being left in the background as Boyle and Switchblade talked animatedly about their adventures since they parted. They didn’t feel resentful at all. Instead they observed the ease of their friendship with wonder. They were two very different beasts with entirely different personalities and yet they fit perfectly together. They had always felt alienated from others, even from Toft, their parent, who they loved very deeply despite everything that gone wrong between Toft and their partner. They had thought that resetting the world and returning to the past was the only way to find the happiness they had lost. But, everyone in Moominvalley did the opposite. They moved forward, trying to find new ways of understanding each other and new connections.
Switchblade was a very atypical Mumrik. He was outgoing and very friendly, loved being around others, and living in urban areas. Boyle, on the other hand, fit the stereotype of a Hemulen to a tee, and yet was powerfully drawn to Switchblade. Snusmumrikken had begun to appreciate that beasts didn’t have to be what they wanted them to be over their stay in Moominvalley. Now they were totally convinced at last that this was a good thing as they watched the two friends connect so naturally.
They reached the final apartment in the tenement at the back of the top floor. Switchblade opened the door wide and let his two guests in. It was a very sparsely furnished studio apartment, like all the others. It had one sleeping bag in the far right corner and a small four person table with four plain wooden chairs around it in the center of the room. There was a tiny, but functional kitchen setup in the left hand corner nearest to the door. In the corner of the room opposite to the kitchen there was a door that clearly led to the bathroom. There were two small windows spaced apart evenly on the back wall.
“Make yourselves at home!”, said Switchblade enthusiastically.
Boyle and Snusmumrikken set aside their backpacks near the bathroom door, unpacked their sleeping bags and set them up against the back wall. Boyle took off his cloak and hung it on the back of one the chairs around the table.
“So, what’s first on the agenda, Switchblade?”, asked Boyle
“We’ll start off with dinner and then a good night’s rest. You’re as perceptive as ever, Boyle, choosing the word ‘agenda’. You’re quite right, I do want something more from you than just spending time with you. I want to convince you to live permanently in Tornio. Your friend is welcome as well, of course! I know that you are the perfect addition to our community here. You have something invaluable to add, I just know it!”, said Switchblade.
“We’ll have all Winter to sort that out, Switchblade. But, you’re not the only one who wants to get closer here. I need to know what we mean to each other. I’ve never grown to feel this close to anyone so quickly. I…I’m really drawn to you, but I don’t want you to feel pressured by me. We’ll take our time. Focusing on helping your community over the next four months will be just the thing.”, said Boyle.
“Fair enough. I look forward to it.”, said Switchblade. They shook paws on it, and then they all moved to the kitchen to begin preparing dinner.

Boyle’s Odyssey
On going boldly
On the Monday morning after the big pre-hibernation party in late October, there was a touching scene taking place in the front yard of The Inspector and Mymble’s cottage. The Inspector, Mymble, Bristol, and Auguste were standing just in front of the porch that The Inspector had added onto Mymble’s cottage after they got married. Across from them were Boyle and Snusmumrikken, fully kitted out for a long Winter’s adventure. Boyle wore a full length woolen, hooded cloak over a heavy Winter peasant’s dress with Winter trousers and knee high heavy boots. His dress, trousers, and cloak were decorated with a sewn flower motif that Mymble had added herself. Snusmumrikken was wearing their familiar black greatcoat and had added a woolen cap to their outfit. Both of them were carrying heavy camping backpacks. Snufkin was standing just behind them, beaming proudly at the pair of them.
“You’re really ready to go, aren’t you, my dear boy?”, said The Inspector to Boyle, tears welling up in his eyes. “Be careful not to lose your maps! Tornio is a completely different place from Moominvalley! It’s easy to get lost in the winding streets and twisting, turning alleys!”
“Don’t worry, Papa! I’ve thought of everything! Snusmumrikken will be with me every step of the way and you know me, I have the best sense of direction in Moominvalley, even better than Little My herself!”, said Boyle
“We know, my dear, but it’s going to be hard for us not to worry just a little. It’s a shame that we can’t count on The Hobgoblin’s Hotel to help out this time!”, said Mymble.
“Even if I could trigger my key myself, I wouldn’t want to. It’s important to me that I do this myself. Switchblade needs to know that he means that much to me.”, said Boyle.
“He’s more than ready, Inspector. He passed every one of my tests with flying colors. He’ll be perfectly safe….imagine me giving tests! I didn’t think that I would ever see the day!”, said Snufkin, chuckling lightly.
Boyle hugged his parents and siblings goodbye and then he and Snusmumrikken were on their way. They quickly faded out of view as they entered Moominvalley’s forest, headed North. By the time they began following the main highway to Tornio through the forest that abuts it on both sides, it had already begun to snow heavily. The snow continued to fall for the next few days, slowing them down. Their well taught survival skills allowed them to find just enough food in the wilderness to make it. They reached the heart of Tornio by the third day of their journey. Boyle followed his map of the city to the juvenile detention center he had escaped from with Switchblade and retraced his steps to the slum area that they had escaped to from there. He unerringly led the pair of them to the tenement where he and Switchblade had gone to ground after escaping the detention center. There was something odd about the building, however. The eight story building no longer looked run down, dangerous, and foreboding. It was totally repaired and remodeled. He hesitated before going in.
“What’s wrong? We’re here. You weren’t kidding about your sense of direction! It might have taken me all Winter to find this place even if I knew what to look for, and I’ve been doing this kind of thing since I was eight!”, said Snusmumrikken.
“What if he’s not here? He could be anywhere in this city! He can’t have been the one who remodeled this place. He’s a destitute vagabond! No, that’s just an excuse. He could pull this off if he put his mind to it, I’m certain of it. I’m afraid that he’s forgotten me and our promise….Let’s go in….do you mind if we hold paws? It’ll help me be brave.”, said Boyle.
Snusmumrikken didn’t hesitate to join paws with Boyle as they opened the front door to the tenement together. The lobby of the building had been completely remodeled, just like the exterior. There was fresh white paint on the walls. There was clean running carpet in the hall leading to the first floor apartments. The floors were immaculate and there were two comfy couches on either side of the lobby. There was a desk where the concierge would have watched over all the activity in the building near the rear left wall. There was a familiar figure sitting behind the desk. It was Switchblade.
“Boyle, you glorious maniac! I knew I could count on you to visit me first! Do you like what I’ve done with the place? Well, it wasn’t just me. I found just the right friends to help me, just like you seem to have. You’ll have to introduce me to them as I introduce all of my friends to you and show you around.”, said Switchblade as he rushed over to Boyle and gave him a powerful hug.

Mallow, the chocolatier and Button, the glassmith
Mallow is the nephew of the Gentleman (from The Moomins and the Great Flood). Pretty much took over his uncle's mountain lair and “edible garden”, making it into a chocolate factory after the old man left it behind (seriously, the guy needed to get out of there to see the world). Coming back to Mallow, he’s just a sweet, very enthusiastic and passionate himbo with the personality of a golden retriever. He’s like... crazy strong, and sometimes forgets that, he’s also a bit naive so be patient with him. Most of the money he earns goes to charity, keeps the rest to support his crazy scientist husband!!
Button is a little moomin, who works as a glassmith/wood carver and has his very own gift shop, not too far away from the Lonely Mountains. Many are confused about his species, since he looks very familiar to the ancestors of moomins. In reality, due to his magical activities and sensitiveness, his fur became longer and gained several mystical abilities (such as mild telekinesis, pyrokinesis and hyalokinesis). Button is just a very jolly, open-minded and actually very wise creature, who always has an advice for everything. Just sit down with him, have a cup of tea, and listen to him sing while he works. It’s just magically comforting

He’s really unhappy with his life and is waiting for something good to happen so he prays almost every night to the Protector-of-Small-Beasts, also a mask enthusiast (someone cheer this sad mf up, he needs a hug)
Edelweiss (on the right), a cranky and wise Fairy (or basically what Tulippa is), luthier and late conductor, whose music became inaudible to everyone around him due to his bitterness and high expectations towards his students (who eventually left him). Without having anyone to teach, he spends most of his time meditating, creating instruments, thinking about where he went wrong and playing music only for himself

Heather, the doctor apprentice and Rue, the ranger
They live up in the mountains, in a small village. Childhood best friends oh my god they are childhood best friends, who have been pining for each other for a long time now, but are scared to confess.
Heather comes from a family of doctors and healers. Naturally, she was expected to follow the tradition, and even though she was afraid at first of the thought of taking care of people and being responsible for their well being, she became passionate about her studies and wished to help others. She’s just the sweetest thing, protect her at all cost. A little bit clumsy and naive, but works very hard, maybe a bit too much. She was kind of oblivious when it came to her feelings towards Rue, thinking that she only admires her friend too much and only wants to stay by her side bc best fiends supposed to be together all the time! ... right?? (welp let’s just say she was very surprised once she realized she is actually in love-)
Rue is a very easygoing, carefree person, who enjoys nature and the peacefulness of it all. She’s just very chill and reliable. Leaves the village every autumn (much to Heather’s sadness) to keep an eye on the little critters and magical creatures at the foot of the mountains and guide travelers away from danger. Others have a lot of respect for her, and she honestly doesn’t understand why. During those 3 months, she misses her girlfriend bestie terribly, and just can’t get her out of her mind. Always collects herbs or flowers that she thinks Heather could use or would like. (She’s actually the same species as Too-Ticky, there’s no actual name tho. Definitely not human)

Just a couple of worried Ferns...
(also more info about her bc i love this little critter)
Has fangs and claws, she just hides them (she’s a bit insecure when it comes to her critter like characteristics)
Doesn’t hibernate, mostly spends her time with Too-Ticky during winter
The people she’s the closest with are Mr. Hemulen, Ninny and Too-Ticky (and this kind of tells a lot)
Dislikes storms
Mostly talks in a quite, soft voice, but also chirps and squeaks by reflex
Involuntarily surprises people by popping up next to them without them noticing
Tries to maintain both a flower and vegetable garden
Will be drawn to ANY kind of parental figure and she can’t help it
