Day 7 of @joannehawker #meetthemaker2023 is Learn. I've learned a lot about growing avocados over the years, like it's easier with an avo-cone😉, and sometimes pruning makes them look like a sad stick😅. No worries though, this sad stick has new growth, which is why this is the first I decided to put in a pot! All my previous avocado plants have been living happily in water their entire lives, but after a few years, this one needed new digs. I'm always learning, whether it's about growing avocados or ceramics! I read and experiment all the time. I've lost avocado plants and ceramic pieces along the way, but I'm all about perseverance. I don't let the disasters get me down for long, and you can bet I'll share the good and bad because I want people to learn from my mistakes to save them from making the same! One thing I learned in my reading is that sometimes, when you finally plant an avocado that's been in water it needs some support. That's why this seed is supported by stones. The main root is pretty hard, so when planted the seed stuck out of the dirt. The stones are not just aesthetic 😉Also, water grown seeds need to start in a wet environment until they acclimate to dirt. The year is coming to a close, there are a lot of new faces in the community, an #artvsartist2022 seemed like a good idea. My name is Brianna and I'm a ceramic artist. I make mostly low-fire clay creations in my home at a tiny desk. I started my ceramics journey in 2017 as a hobby, but enjoyed it so much I decided to share my work and exploration. In the beginning I thought it might just be a new art medium I would hyperfocus on for a while and get bored. I was so wrong! The possibilities of clay creations are endless, and the fact that many items can also be used instead of just admired is my favorite part! I aspire to create art for everyday use. Art is meant to bring joy, and having something that brings that joy, but is also useful is my purpose. I want my pieces to be that thing someone uses everyday that creates a little warmth to their hearts and a small smile on their face. I'm going to ruin my page aesthetic with this photo, BUT I've got to tell this story! I'm too stoked to not share what happened today! I was cleaning out my shed when I found 2 random boxes. Lo and behold they were FILLED with ceramic supplies. An entire box of glaze, plus another with bisque ornaments, tools, and kiln items. The most exciting part was finding the kiln "furniture" as it's called! There were 2 shelves that have been on my wishlist FOREVER. Along with numerous items to hold the shelves up and place glazed pieces on while firing. Of the maybe 50 glaze bottles only a handful were still good. I did however find gold luster that I'm begging is still good! That stuff is terribly expensive and I found 3 bottles😱! I should mention my kiln was acquired second hand from someone my mother knew, it was in my parent's basement for a decade before I got it! These items were from the original owner, A LOT of test tiles were in the boxes, including some half finished items. But the biggest thing is I didn't realized I had this stuff, I don't remember getting it or putting in my shed. So this was honestly like Christmas for me and opens up a lot because of new found versatility while firing! I. AM. I was told recently my feed looks very "aesthetic" which is honestly such a flattering comment because it's one of the things I've had the hardest time achieving! I'm posting this and possibly ruining that though. Why?! Because reality is IMPORTANT! As a self taught artist a lot or trial, error, and frankly, a load of luck has gone into the pieces I've made and continue to make. A recent reel showed failures during the building process which aren't very catastrophic because you squish the clay and restart. THIS however is a failure of the final product. There's no going back, tweaking, adjusting, it's just a ruined piece. While trying to detach my stilts this piece shattered. BUT, I'll tell you about this failure. It. Was. Beautiful! Sparkling, perfectly fused layers of glaze, that danced together while firing to create this superb swirling melting design! They just melted a tad TOO much. I needed to share the beauty of this glaze combination more permanently than just in stories though, it's too lovely. And although the piece was a loss, I did keep a remnant of the disaster as inspiration. I also have two more made which will be similarly glazed, with some adjustments! TL;DR Just a reminder not everything goes perfectly, particularly if your trying something new. So don't be discouraged if it doesn't work out right away, keep at it you'll figure it out. And remember all the "perfection" you see on this app has endless failures hidden behind them, they just aren't "pretty" enough to share. After realizing I've only shared some of these photos in stories and not in posts, I thought it would be good to tell you about this little propagation station. Initially made for propagating, it could also be a bud vase, or hold a cute dried flower arrangement. A simple bar of glazed pottery gives the antique cigar tubes a firm foundation to hang from. Those tubes are wrapped with what I like to call nests of thin copper wire, interspersed with glass beads. (Close-up in photo 2) I recycled the copper wire from electronic car parts, for those who don't know, I used to work in the automotive industry. The nests are then secured to the glass tubes and keep them in place. All of this is strung with natural hemp cord to be hung on a wall as shown, in a window, or frankly, anywhere. I had this idea I my mind for a while, it wasn't until I started using @maycocolors Malachite glaze that it all really came together. I imagined that glaze with copper wire accents and the nest vision was born. Repurposing items I had like the cigar tubes and car parts was a big part of my inspiration as well. The results truly were exactly what I had in mind! There is one more set of tubes in a larger size I intend to use in a larger version of this, my first attempt however failed, so I will try again soon. I'm still on a bit of a break, the kiddo's birthday is tomorrow and we have been potty training so my time has been consumed by both of these things.
