Andromeda's age
Tumblr media
So because of what Runaan said here I thought Andromeda is the youngest besides Rayla. She and Ram looks pretty young and they were at least teens when Rayla was a child. But look at her horns cuffs, she is already married. So she got married when she was sixteen or seventeen? She is not fully trained yet because she can't access the moonshadow form yet, so she is young. It might not be weird in their race to marry at a young age.
By the way and it's not related but my headcanon is that she was married with Eljaal from Tales of Xadia. He is also assassin and he left because he was afraid their partner won't agree with their action, because they didn't kill their target so it's make sense their partner is assassin as well. They are married because of their horn cuffs so it's nice to think they are married to each other.

The hollowed husk of coral Aaravos’ prison is sealed inside is a red, shadowy labyrinth—Rayla keeps one hand along the wall, Stella on her shoulder watching her back and to try and remember the way they’d come. Claudia’s stupid spell had caved in half the ceiling of the core antechamber and sent them all scattering in different directions, the floor wet enough to be uncomfortable in boots and also not enough to actually offer any help in hearing what’s up ahead, a stitching her side as her ears prick, straining.
If she can just find Callum or Ezran or Soren, then—
A shadow darts ahead on the curve of the wall, and Rayla races toward it. Friend or foe, there’s only one way to go and—
It’s not Callum, the way her heart hopes.
It’s Viren, the way her gut knows.
His face is pale and smooth, not corrupted—another dirty lie—and she gnashes her teeth, drawing her blades on instinct. She has them levied and poised to strike (he doesn’t have his staff—where is his staff?) when he raises his hands, surely to offer up some pitiful excuse or deadly spell, as he says—“I need you to kill me.”
It’s enough to make her stupidly stop short, her blade less than an inch from his throat. She hasn’t even had to shove him up against the wall. “What?
“Kill me,” he repeats. “We don’t have much time until the magic runs out, and Claudia—”
“Why would you want me to kill you?” Rayla demands, not lowering her swords. This has to be some kind of trick, too. Another lie. Saying what the other person wants to hear so you can slip away. She’d understand better than anyone.
“Because Aaravos is—worse than death,” Viren says, haltingly. “So kill me, assassin. That’s what you’ve wanted, isn’t it?”
Her hand shakes. Her blade nearly strays. He can’t be serious. She can’t be serious. Her target is here, asking to be killed, no fear in his eyes, and nothing but hate for him in her veins, and she still—
“Rayla!”
Callum. Her heart turns to face him, while she remains focused on Viren, keeping her eyes locked on the dark mage’s pale, unsmiling face. She hears Callum’s steps slow as he takes in the situation, an angered expression transforming to something more quizzical perhaps: Viren unarmed and non-resistant, Rayla with the prized death she’s wanted all this time, and yet no blood spilt.
Somehow, having the person she swore to kill Viren for in order to protect is what makes the lump rise in her throat. She has to do this. She’s killed animals for hunting. She thought she’d killed Viren before. She can do this. Viren is even asking for it. She has to do this.
Then Viren rolls his eyes, tossing the blade at his throat a disdainful look. “Get on with it, will you? I told you, there’s not much time.” His eyes go to Callum. “Can’t you tell your elf to kill me faster? I won’t put up a fight.”
“She’s not—what on earth are you talking about?” Callum spits.
“Viren wants me to kill him,” she says. “But I—” Certainty has never proved her well. Hesitation less so.
A Moonshadow assassin who—can this be right?—isn’t capable of killing.
Callum’s hand finds her shoulder, a warm weight, tugging her away from the wall, and the only reason she lets him is because it’s Callum and she doesn’t want to cry in front of fucking Viren of all people just because she can’t—
“It’s okay,” Callum says, Viren lightly massaging his throat once she’s let him down from the wall. He unfolds her hand around around her blade, slipping it into his own grasp. “It’s alright, Rayla.” He folds it up and hands it back to her.
She mops at her eyes with her fingers, sloppy and stained only with tears of her own frustration, her vision clearing enough to see the look that passes between the two high mages.
“You want to die?” Callum checks, a hard look in his eyes. She wonders if he hates Viren too—for taking her away from him, in a way. But it’s colder than that too. He’s still thinking. Sizing up the situation, determining the honesty.
Viren sighs, looking beyond exasperated. “Yes, for gods’ sake. I thought it’d be easier than the first time. But she can’t kill me like this, apparently—”
Callum raises his staff with one hand and nudges her behind him with the other. “That’s alright,” he says darkly. “I can.”

I just want to return to What We Know About Ghosting(tm) for a minute since we've now seen three Ghosted Moonshadow elf characters with very different reactions to it:
The Convict: Redfeather is Ghosted for an unknown reason, but one she claims not to regret, she has essentially leaned in to it and rejected Moonshadow society and her previous identity in turn. Redfeather implies that many Ghosts react as she did and discard everything from their previous lives, including their names.
The Penitent: Tylluan is Ghosted for being kind of a shitty leader, and has come to accept their sentence while still deciding to work to fix their final mistake, not with the intent to reverse their punishment but to help their former community in the way they should have before. Tylluan is a bit weird about their name—it's possible the implication is supposed to be that the closer they get to their goal of fixing their mistake, the more comfortable they feel reclaiming it? They go by Feathershawl for the entirety of "The Lost Oasis," but then switch to saying they prefer to be called Tylluan at the start of "The Gloaming Glade." (It's noted that "most elves" refer to them as Feathershawl, whatever that means.)
The Martyr: Rayla, of course, is Ghosted for a misunderstanding of what was actually an incredible sacrifice on her part, for which she still blames herself rather than her community, but still holds to her identity and (it seems) the hope that one day she can return. Rayla, as far as we know, never even considers the possibility of abandoning her name.
Ghosting appears to be very localized to individual communities, since Tylluan, for example, is invisible only to the people of the town he was exiled from—a Moonshadow PC is not indicated to have any problem seeing him. Mechanically, it's something that can be done to an individual in absentia by all of the community members undergoing a ritual, but it's not clear if this is the only way to do it or if it can be performed on the individual instead (which seems like it would be more efficient, at least).
(I will note that there are a lot of things that make absolutely ZERO sense about ANY of this, such as the fact that a Ghost can still enter their community and simply cannot be seen or heard—but can still affect their surroundings. I, for one, would hesitate to punish someone in that way simply because APPARENTLY THEY CAN COME BACK AND FUCK WITH YOU AND YOU LITERALLY CAN'T STOP THEM IN ANY WAY. Maybe there's some intricate thing going on that prevents a Ghost from doing actual harm to the community that exiled them and its members, and Tylluan is able to affect things in the Hollow Wood because they are acting in its defense, but... that's really needlessly complicated, imo.)
Following the very community-centered nature of Ghosting, Tylluan can be un-Ghosted depending on how "The Gloaming Glade" plays out, so we know it's both reversible and, again, basically subject to the whim of overall community majority attitude. This very localized status is interesting, since it implies that Moonshadow communities are not only insular with regard to other elves, but even with regard to other Moonshadow elves. Unless there's a way to detect if someone has been Ghosted by a community, it wouldn't be quite as devastating to just... pick up and go to another community. The implication here, I think, is that moving between communities is regarded as generally suspicious unless there's a negotiated reason (marriage, training in a trade, etc.)—you can't just show up, because you will presumably be actively rejected.
Finally, the fact that we know Ghosting can be reversed makes Moonshadow justice in general just... even more bonkers. I feel like one of two things has to be true: either a) there's some kind of super-Ghosting that is used for actual severe crimes and expels the individual from ALL of Moonshadow society, not just their local community, or b) Rayla is actually correct in her somewhat naive assumption about Redfeather's crime being a circumstance similar to her own, where she was served a legalistically simplistic punishment over a very complicated situation with mitigating circumstances. ADDITIONALLY, Rayla is, or is at least willing to believe that she is, STILL GHOSTED two years after it has presumably come out that she SAVED THE DRAGON PRINCE'S LIFE AT LEAST TWICE. Did Zubeia just like... not dispatch that memo to the Slivergrove, because it kind of seems like the least she could do, given that it was on her order that the assassins were sent in the first place? Is the Slivergrove SO insular that it only accepts messages from even the fucking DRAGON QUEEN if they include assassination orders? The alternative is that everyone in the Silvergrove is so fucking insane that they heard all of that and were like, "yeah, but..." and let the punishment stand, despite presumably knowing Rayla since she was a baby. (Though to be fair, they probably knew all the assassins who died since they were babies, as well. But still.)
Now, maybe the happy alternate to that will be that they DID un-Ghost Rayla, but she's so self-hating that it doesn't occur to her that would ever happen without some further grand redemption gesture on her part, and they just literally couldn't find her to tell her that. (Ethari like "OH MY GOD RAYLA IF I EVER SEE YOU AGAIN YOU'RE GOING IN THE TODDLER LEASH FOREVER" and crying.) Maybe now that she's back in fairly static, predictable company (Katolis, Callum and Ezran, etc.) the news will reach her?
Anyway, TL;DR: Moonshadow Ghosting: still absolutely fucking insane, possibly the most bizarre thing we're supposed to accept about the setting.

Operation Stumpy Re-Read
AFFC: Samwell III (Chapter 26)
Night belonged to the bravos and the courtesans. Dareon's new friends, Sam thought bitterly. They were all the singer could talk about of late. He was trying to write a song about one courtesan, a woman called the Moonshadow who had heard him singing beside the Moon Pool and rewarded him with a kiss. "You should have asked her for silver," Sam had said. "It's coin we need, not kisses." But the singer only smiled. "Some kisses are worth more than yellow gold, Slayer." That made him angry too. Dareon was not supposed to be making up songs about courtesans. He was supposed to be singing about the Wall and the valor of the Night's Watch. Jon had hoped that perhaps his songs might persuade a few young men to take the black. Instead he sang of golden kisses, silvery hair, and red, red lips. No one ever took the black for red, red lips.
Don't ask me about the moon, silver, or red lips.
This plan is dumb. Who in Braavos is going to pay for a ship that takes them to another continent, where they can't speak the language, so they can join a celibate military order in some frozen barren land? I'd rather be broke and starving on a lagoon.
+.+.+
"All that weeping makes me want to slap her," he complained, "and I can scarce sleep for her sobbing."
You would weep as well if you had a son and lost him, Sam almost said. He could not blame Gilly for her grief. Instead, he blamed Jon Snow and wondered when Jon's heart had turned to stone.
Tumblr media
+.+.+
Once he asked Maester Aemon that very question, when Gilly was down at the canal fetching water for them. "When you raised him up to be the lord commander," the old man answered.
Yeah, Aemon had nothing to do with it.
+.+.+
A hollow rumbling echoed off the roofs of Braavos, like the sound of distant thunder; the Titan, sounding nightfall from across the lagoon.
The Titan makes thunder!
+.+.+
Some days he did not seem to know where he was. Some days he would lose his way when saying something and begin to ramble on about his father or his brother. He is one hundred and two, Sam reminded himself, but he had been just as old at Castle Black and his wits had never wandered there.
Man, Jon really did kill this guy, huh? That's fantastic.
Don't even think about judging me.
+.+.+
I should have used our coin for wood, Sam chided himself every time. I should have had the sense to keep him warm.
Instead he had squandered the last of their silver on a healer from the House of the Red Hands, a tall pale man in robes embroidered with swirling stripes of red and white. All that the silver bought him was half a flask of dreamwine.
[...]
A chill had gotten inside Maester Aemon during the voyage and settled in his chest. By the time they got to Braavos, he had been so weak they'd had to carry him ashore. They'd still had a fat bag of silver then, so Dareon had asked for the inn's biggest bed. The one they'd gotten was large enough to sleep eight, so the innkeep insisted on charging them for that many.
Samwell is quickly cheated out of all their money. Hindsight is 20/20, but Jon probably should have seen that one coming.
+.+.+
"Oldtown," Maester Aemon wheezed. "Yes. I dreamt of Oldtown, Sam. I was young again and my brother Egg was with me, with that big knight he served. We were drinking in the old inn where they make the fearsomely strong cider."
If I read the words 'Oldtown' or 'fearsomely strong cider' in one more chapter, I'm cancelling the reread.
+.+.+
The autumn gales had hounded them all across the narrow sea. Sometimes they came up from the south, roiling with thunder and lightning and black rains that fell for days. Sometimes they came down from the north, cold and grim, with savage winds that cut right through a man. Once it got so cold that Sam had woken to find the whole ship coated in ice, shining as white as pearl.
I'm including this because I'm paranoid.
+.+.+
"There's no more wood." Dareon had paid the innkeep double for a room with a hearth, but none of them had realized that wood would be so costly here. Trees did not grow on Braavos, save in the courts and gardens of the mighty. Nor would the Braavosi cut the pines that covered the outlying islands around their great lagoon and acted as windbreaks to shield them from storms. Instead, firewood was brought in by barge, up the rivers and across the lagoon. Even dung was dear here; the Braavosi used boats in place of horses.
Sounds like a great trading opportunity for a lumber baron.
Trees did not grow on Braavos, save in the courts and gardens of the mighty.
Why does the lemongate theory exist? The explanation is right there. It's sitting right there on the page. Who the hell convinces themselves a lemon tree can't exist in Braavos? As if Braavos is in the middle of Siberia or something.
+.+.+
"Not this time, Sam. I dreamed . . . in the black of night a man asks all the questions he dare not ask by daylight. For me, these past years, only one question has remained. Why would the gods take my eyes and my strength, yet condemn me to linger on so long, frozen and forgotten? What use could they have for an old done man like me?" Aemon's fingers trembled, twigs sheathed in spotted skin. "I remember, Sam. I still remember."
He was not making sense. "Remember what?"
"Dragons," Aemon whispered. "The grief and glory of my House, they were."
Aemon Targaryen believes he's being kept alive for some greater purpose.
After the gods are finished tossing the coin, they decree every Targaryan must also be an imbecile.
+.+.+
"I see them in my dreams, Sam. I see a red star bleeding in the sky. I still remember red. I see their shadows on the snow, hear the crack of leathern wings, feel their hot breath. My brothers dreamed of dragons too, and the dreams killed them, every one. Sam, we tremble on the cusp of half-remembered prophecies, of wonders and terrors that no man now living could hope to comprehend . . .
Red like the red door? Red like the Red Keep? Red like blood? Maybe it’s Jon’s shadow you’re seeing.
My brothers dreamed of dragons too, and the dreams killed them, every one.
Tumblr media
Kill them all!
I'm guessing this is why we believe that Egg guy caused Summerhall?
+.+.+
He closed his white eyes wearily, then forced them open once again. "I should not have left the Wall. Lord Snow could not have known, but I should have seen it. Fire consumes, but cold preserves. The Wall . . . but it is too late to go running back. The Stranger waits outside my door and will not be denied. Steward, you have served me faithfully. Do this one last brave thing for me. Go down to the ships, Sam. Learn all you can about these dragons."
Damn, not a Targaryen saying this.
Fire good, ice bad. Traitor.
+.+.+
His swordbelt hung from a peg on the wall, beside the old cracked horn that Jon had given him.
Horn!
+.+.+
His swordbelt kept threatening to fall down about his ankles, so he had to keep tugging it back up as he went.
George was tired of being criticized for Samwell not losing weight while ranging.
+.+.+
Dareon . . . I should not think ill of him. He could be hurt, perhaps that is why he did not come back. He could be dead, lying in some alley in a pool of blood, or floating facedown in one of the canals.
Keep this same energy for Jon, please.
+.+.+
In the Seven Kingdoms nobles draped themselves in velvets, silks, and samites of a hundred hues whilst peasants and smallfolk wore raw wool and dull brown roughspun. In Braavos it was otherwise. The bravos swaggered about like peacocks, fingering their swords, whilst the mighty dressed in charcoal grey and purple, blues that were almost black and blacks as dark as a moonless night.
Will this be important later?
+.+.+
The other one, the dark-haired bravo in the burgundy brocade and yellow cloak whose name would appear to have been Terro, made some comment in Braavosi, and his fair-haired friend laughed, and said, "My friend Terro says you dress above your station. Are you some great lord, to wear the black?"
"He is not a lord," a child's voice put in. "He's in the Night's Watch, stupid. From Westeros." A girl edged into the light, pushing a barrow full of seaweed; a scruffy, skinny creature in big boots, with ragged unwashed hair.
Who is this?
+.+.+
"He has no coin," mocked the fair-haired bravo. His dark-haired friend grinned and said something in Braavosi. "My friend Terro is chilly. Be our good fat friend and give him your cloak."
"Don't do that either," said the barrow girl, "or else they'll ask for your boots next, and before long you'll be naked."
"Little cats who howl too loud get drowned in the canals," warned the fair-haired bravo.
"Not if they have claws." And suddenly there was a knife in the girl's left hand, a blade as skinny as she was. The one called Terro said something to his fair-haired friend and the two of them moved off, chuckling at one another.
She reminds me of someone, I just can't quite put my finger on it.
+.+.+
"The bravos never bother anyone without a sword. Not even stupid camel cunts like Terro and Orbelo."
Excuse me, do you kiss your mother with that mouth!?
You will.
+.+.+
"Who are you?"
"No one." She stank of fish. "I used to be someone, but now I'm not. You can call me Cat, if you like. Who are you?"
"Samwell, of House Tarly. You speak the Common Tongue."
"My father was the oarmaster on Nymeria. A bravo killed him for saying that my mother was more beautiful than the Nightingale. Not one of those camel cunts you met, a real bravo. Someday I'll slit his throat. The captain said Nymeria had no need of little girls, so he put me off. Brusco took me in and gave me a barrow."
Hmmm.
At first glance that looks like a completely fabricated story, but there might be something hiding here.
+.+.+
She looked up at him. "What ship will you be sailing on?"
"We bought passage on the Lady Ushanora."
The girl squinted at him suspiciously. "She's gone. Don't you know? She left days and days ago."
I know, Sam might have said. He and Dareon had stood on the dock watching the rise and fall of her oars as she beat for the Titan and the open sea. "Well," the singer said, "that's done." If Sam had been a braver man, he would have shoved him into the water. When it came to talking girls out of their clothes Dareon had a honeyed tongue, yet in the captain's cabin somehow Sam had done all the talking, trying to persuade the Braavosi to wait for them. "Three days I have waited for this old man," the captain had said. "My holds are full, and my men have fucked their wives farewell. With you or without, my Lady leaves on the tide."
[...]
Even worse, he had refused to return the passage money they had paid him, the silver that was meant to see them safe to Oldtown. "You bought my finest cabin. It is there, awaiting you. If you do not choose to occupy it, that is no fault of mine. Why should I bear the loss?"
I don't know, maybe we should have sent Grenn along too.
+.+.+
"You said you saw a singer . . ."
"At the Happy Port. He's going to wed the Sailor's Wife."
"Wed?"
"She only beds the ones who marry her."
You hear that? Always get dinner first.
+.+.+
Dareon cannot wed! He said the words! "I have to go."
You're the one that keeps cloaking Gilly.
It's fine, kill Dareon, and bring him back.
+.+.+
He ran. It was a long way over slick cobbles.
PATE?!
+.+.+
Behind them a purple galleas had been painted on the wall, crewed by women clad in thigh-high boots and nothing else.
An immature person would make an Arya joke.
+.+.+
"I'll go," said Sam, "but you'll come with me."
"No. I'm done with you. I'm done with black." Dareon tore his cloak off his naked bride and tossed it in Sam's face. "Here. Throw that rag on the old man, it may keep him a little warmer. I shan't be needing it. I'll be clad in velvet soon. Next year I'll be wearing furs and eating—"
Sam hit him.
He did not think about it. His hand came up, curled into a fist, and crashed into the singer's mouth. Dareon cursed and his naked wife gave a shriek and Sam threw himself onto the singer and knocked him backwards over a low table. They were almost of a height, but Sam weighed twice as much, and for once he was too angry to be afraid. He punched the singer in the face and in the belly, then began to pummel him about the shoulders with both hands. When Dareon grabbed his wrists, Sam butted him with his head and broke his lip. The singer let go and he smashed him in the nose. Somewhere a man was laughing, a woman cursing. The fight seemed to slow, as if they were two black flies struggling in amber. Then someone dragged Sam off the singer's chest. He hit that person too, and something hard crashed into his head.
Samwell is ✨ stressed. ✨
+.+.+
The next he knew he was outside, flying headfirst through the fog. For half a heartbeat he saw black water underneath him. Then the canal came up and smashed him in the face.
[...]
I'm going to drown, he thought, in a blind black panic. He thrashed, trying to claw his way back to the surface, but instead his face bumped the bottom of the canal. I'm upside down, he realized, I'm drowning. Something moved beneath one flailing hand, an eel or a fish, slithering through his fingers. I can't drown, Maester Aemon will die without me, and Gilly will have no one. I have to swim, I have to . . .
There was a huge splash, and something coiled around him, under his arms and around his chest. The eel, was his first thought, the eel has got me, it's going to pull me down. He opened his mouth to scream, and swallowed more water. I'm drowned, was his last thought. Oh, gods be good, I'm drowned.
Hyle Hunt is teleporting across the map faster than you can say season 7.
What is dead may never die, Samwell. Rise again, harder and stronger.
+.+.+
His rescuer leaned over him, huge and black and dripping. "You owe Xhondo many feathers. The water ruined Xhondo's fine cloak."
It had, Sam saw. The feathered cloak clung to the black man's huge shoulders, sodden and soiled. "I never meant . . ."
". . . to be swimming? Xhondo saw. Too much splashing. Fat men should float." He grabbed Sam's doublet with a huge black fist and hauled him to his feet. "Xhondo mates on Cinnamon Wind. Many tongues he speaks, a little. Inside Xhondo laughs, to see you punch the singer. And Xhondo hears." A broad white smile spread across his face. "Xhondo knows these dragons."
Yay! Xhondo of the Cinnamon Wind!
"Not for a year or more, I fear. From here the Cinnamon Wind sails east, to make the trader's circle round the Jade Sea."
"I see," said Dany, disappointed. "I wish you fair winds and good trading, then. You have brought me a precious gift."
"I have been amply repaid, great queen."
She puzzled at that. "How so?"
His eyes gleamed. "I have seen dragons."
Dany laughed. "And will see more of them one day, I hope. Come to me in King's Landing when I am on my father's throne, and you shall have a great reward." - Daenerys II, ACOK
Final thoughts:
We know he'll eventually meet Sansa, but I think it's important he meet Rickon and Lady Stoneheart too.

So last night whilst I was trying to go to sleep my brain decided to randomly start thinking abt rayllum. Bc, I mean, why the fork not? So I ended up thinking up pretty much the entire plot of an event that happens in a future season(probs s5). If this happens they better put my name in the credits istg-
CONTEXT:
There was some speculation a while back abt a stabbing and Callum running away and yada yada
_________
Okay so essentially two things could happen:
1. Aaravos possesses Callum and when Callum comes out of his trance he realises that he's done something super bad(idk what yet just bear with me here) and runs away in a panic- like just bolts. The other guys(aka Soren, Ezran, Zym, Etc) are occupied(*cough* or dead *cough*) and Rayla turns and runs after him.
~Callum turned and twisted between trees, tripping over a small root once, but getting straight back up and continuing running. He ran with tears slowly streaking down his face until he could no longer feel his legs and he slowed, quickly slipping between a crack in the side of a hill that opened into a twisting cave. Backing away from the alternate entrance, he slowly turned around, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. 'That didn't really happen. It's just a dream' he thought to himself before opening his eyes to look into the dark abyss that was the cave, however it was only a split second before a familiar voice sounded from where he had entered.
"Callum, it's not your fault". Callum jumped and there was a pause of silence between them before the all-too-familiar Rayla spoke up again. "What happened, I mean." A brief silence followed, the air stagment and salty. Callum took a step back.
"Rayla, stay away from me" He began, taking another step back. A look of confusion crossed the elve's face, but she understood. "I don't want to hurt you"
"Callum-"
"Please" He begged quietly through tears, taking another step back.
"Callum-"
"No, Rayla, he could come back at any moment-"
"CALLUM!" The irritated elf shouted, a slight echo following, however like the echo, the anger died quickly and she began walking towards him. Callum had finally listened and had paused his pleads. "I know you won't hurt me, dummy"
"But-" Callum began to protest.
"Look" she began. "It's not you that's doing this- it's Aaravos. He can't get to you if you're this far away from the mirror"
"He's getting stronger-"
"Callum I KNOW this isn't what you're worried about. If not Aaravos, what's actually happening?" Callum tensed, and Rayla knew she had hit the nail on the head.
~damn maybe I should turn that into a oneshot. I didn't know I could even still write half decently~
2. My fav one 😝
Okeh so essentially Callum is being controlled by Aaravos like super bad and can't get away and whatever, and so basically whenever Callum comes through he's begging Rayla to kill him like they discussed in S4, and whenever Aaravos comes through he's going along with Callum's plan, which seems kinda sus ngl, so Rayla gets overwhelmed and listens to Callum and stabs him and then whilst Callum is literally dying we go into Callum's mind and Dark Callum is back but with a twiiiiist
~"CALLUM NO-" it all played in slow motion; the moment he sacrificed himself by touching a shard of the mirror. Aaravos jumped inside of him, free of his shackles inside the mirror. Callum's ragdoll-like body slumped to its knees, hunched over and eyes wide. Similar to (*insert time period*) earlier, he flicked his head up and stared Rayla dead in the eye, however these weren't Callum's eyes- these eyes were dark and hollow, a bright light covering the pupil, iris and white of the eye, reflecting only the pure essence of evil. Rayla gasped and stood back, time seeming to return to normal again. Callum- no, Aaravos- slowly began walking over to Rayla, the moonshadow elf tensing, gripping the hilt of her blades tighter as he approached. She waited for the man to say something- insult her, even. Instead of speaking, Aaravos continued circling Rayla, surveying her intensley; the moonshadow elf spoke up.
"What do you want from Callum? From me?" She asked, her voice dangerously low, but stern and stoic as well. The elf-in-human's-clothing continued circling her slowly, but held his head up as he spoke, Aaravos's all-too-familiar voice breaking a thick silence.
"This is about the boy?" He asked. "This is about what I want?" He said, his low voice echoing around, seeming to come from multiple directions at a time. Rayla wasn't sure if she should answer; and so she kept her lips pressed tightly together, her nails almost leaving marks in the skin on her palm she had wrapped her hand so tightly around the blade's handle.
"So, tell me, assassin" he spat the last word as if it were venom being injected into his skin. "Is it really about the chance of your one and only love losing his life to me" there was a slight pause. "Or the wealth and prosperity that will be bestowed upon the land once I have my place?"
Aaravos came to a stand a few feet in front of Rayla, staring her dead in the eye, a clear indication that he knew exactly the kind of power he possessed, and he knew exactly how to use it.
"You're not here to help us; to help humans, either" She began, not breaking eye contact. She wanted- she NEEDED to find the right way around this. "You want power- moreso than you already have. My question is: why use Callum to get it? Why not just find your own way out? The mirror is shattered; why aren't you roaming free at your own will?" The man paused and a look of almost confusion crossed his face, in deep thought for a split second.
"You say that as if I dont already have my will"
"That's because you don't- you use the will of others"
"Oh? Can you give me an..." He leaned closer, his glowing white eyes only centimetres from her stubborn face. "...example?" Rayla took a shaky breath in, hoping the startouch elf hadn't picked up on her fingers twitching.
She used one of her blades and pressed the blunt side gently to Callum's chest, not using nearly enough pressure to tear clothing, let alone draw blood. "Like right now. You're using the mage's will to reflect your own". Aaravos frowned distinctly, taking a step back and turning to face away from the moonshadow elf, hands behind his back.
"What if I were to bring the owner of this body back for a second? Would that change it?" He tried making a deal, looking back at Rayla over his shoulder with bright, white eyes. A shiver ran down her spine. There was something about this- about Aaravos- that wasn't right. Maybe it was the odd angle his neck was twisted at, or maybe it was the fact that in this possessed state, the real Callum could be sitting back and watching, listening to everything that was happening, and not being able to control any of it. He was merely a spectator.
"Perhaps" The woman answered, keeping her posture straight and grip on the blades tight. Aaravos paused for a second, lifting a hand to his chin in thought; he turned to face Rayla.
"Very well" he proclaimed, giving Rayla only a second to process that he had agreed to his own deal. Callum's body slumped to the ground again as his eyes went back to having the distinct white and pupil of a human eye, his irises returning back to their deep green shine.
"Rayla..." He started, his usual voice clearly stressed. "Kill-" but before he could finish, he stood straight up again, his eyes being once again flooded with blinding white light.
"You said-!" Rayla began to reason, now clearly panicked at how much pure agony the real Callum had been in. Aaravos leapt forward, pressing a finger to her mouth in a 'shh' motion.
"I did say, 'for a second', didn't I?" He claimed, quoting what he had offered seconds earlier.
"You're SICK-" Rayla began to crack. What use was keeping her cool if she wouldnt- couldnt- win either way?
Aaravos took a few steps back, letting out a low, sinister chuckle. "Am I? Or is it you? Are you merely hallucinating? Am I truly real? Do you have a fever, my friend?" The man questioned in a cool tone, again circling the moonshadow elf, his voice seeming to echo and come from every direction.
"That's not what I meant" Rayla began, however ceased to say any more once the familiar surroundings of inside the dragon queen's nest suddenly switched to a flat lilac wasteland, red dust rising and falling in a split-second motion to hide the transition, background silencing completely. She gasped slightly, inhaling the last of the dust and coughing.
"Did you hear what the boy said?" He laughed loudly. "He wanted you to kill him! How thoughtful!" There was a brief pause. "Oh, but, there's just one problem..." He slowly shook his head and looked at the dirt touching his shoes. "I was always under the impression that you would never hurt anyone, especially the the ones you love"
Rayla stiffened and straightened her posture again, somewhat regaining the use of her limbs, adrenaline pumping. "I'm an assassin" she declared bravely, despite her past 'assassin' experiences.
Aaravos slowed his circling, walking in a manner that sent chills down the moonshafow elf's spine. "You might be an assassin..." He spoke in a dry tone, "but you can't..." Suddenly, Rayla saw a flash of light and could clearly see the real Aaravos- a tall startouch elf muttering the words "...kill..." The light faded in an instant, being replaced with illusions of words swirling, quiet whispers echoing draconic words around her in every which direction.
"Argh!" She exclaimed, trying to see where Aaravos was- not Callum- AARAVOS. She couldn't risk endangering Callum by hurting his body and not Aaravos. She had to time this perfectly.
"So... what'll it be?" Aaravos's deep voice echoed through her head, seeming to bounce off walls.
Callum's panicked voice peirced the air, his eyes flashing to green again while he spoke. "Rayla, you ha-"
Eyes flashed back to their possessed state. "You have to be tough" the archmage's voice came back.
"-kill me-" Eyes flashed to green as Callum spoke.
"Yes, kill him" Aaravos protested. Eyes white.
"Kill him" Green.
"Please, do" White.
"Shut up- just shut up!" Rayla protested, the echoing experience making her dizzy. Who would she listen to? She couldn't kill Callum; even if it's not killing Callum.
"It's the only way!" Callum's familiar voice and green eyes begged, pleaded.
"As if this would hurt me" Aaravos came back.
"NOW-" Callum screeched, and once Aaravos had taken over, Rayla knew what she had to do. Before the white-eyed corpse could say anything further, Rayla drew her blades and took her first casualty. Time seemed to freeze; Aaravos stilled, glowing white eyes widening, face becoming pale as he realised what had happened. He slowly touched a finger to where the numbness began, blood caking his hand and staining his clothes, realising he had been run through the side with one of Rayla's butterfly blades, in which she was still grasping tightly, panting, not yet taking in what she had just gone through with. She withdrew the blade, blood rapidly spilling from the wound, and possessed-callum-aka-aaravos's eyes faded to complete blackness, falling back and hitting the ground with a thud. Standing up, Rayla took a moment to process her actions; gasping, the elf turned to face the person she had killed just a moment earlier. She had filled her duty. It just took longer than Runaan had originally wanted.
"Callum? Callum!" Rayla lunged forward, sliding onto her knees and dropping her blood-stained blade into the dirt, in which the landscape illusion had not yet disappeared.

I am L I V I N G for the character study you’re doing for the Collector in this fic- 💝💖💝💖
This is seriously becoming one of my favorite TOH fics of all time, no question. 👍
Oh gosh, that is high praise indeed. I’m honored!
I love doing character studies and even though I first envisioned Moonshadow as a fluffy (and much shorter) piece, I’m really happy that it evolved into the fic it is now. What can I say, multi-chapter character studies (at times slightly uncomfortable character studies) with overarching plots and themes are my happy space when it comes to writing.
I really never IMAGINED that I’d be doing this project when The Collector first appeared onscreen in ‘Hollow Mind’ (there’s legit a post out there on a different social media where I was live-posting my reaction to the episode and if memory serves, my reaction to The Collector was “WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT???”).
I really love how their character both exceeded and subverted my expectations for them, and I’ve been having a lot of fun putting my own spin on them and expanding on their characterization while we are here in hiatus land.
Anyway, I really can’t express how delighted I am that you are continuing to enjoy Moonshadow and I’m really looking forward to sharing what I have in store for the fic!

Eljaal
We've got several glimpses about Rayla's training as assassin and we didn't see Eljaal. Rayla watched Runaan train the assassins in the Bloodmoon Huntress but Eljaal is not part of them, the assassins were the ones who went to the assassination mission against Harrow and Ezran. In Chasing Shadows Rayla mentioning her training with Andromeda and Skor, but they were in the mission.
Silvergrove doesn't feel like a huge place so probably all the assassins are train together, so that means Eljaal is from Hollow Wood? Because if they were from Silvergrove they should have train with Runaan as well right?

my crack canon quartet timeline bc @jelzorz did one and it's useful bc there's a decent amount to juggle
as always said quarter is Rayllum, Corvus/Terry, as well as aged up!Soren/Opeli and aged up!Ezran/Claudia. Y'all know the drill by this point
Relevant ages:
Opeli is 11 years older than Soren
Ezran is just under 7 years younger than Claudia
There's a rough alternative in which Claudia stays working with Aaravos for likely longer than she will in canon (aka for another 3-4 years) but for the sake of canon compliancy as its own interesting route...
Post-S7
Operating under the assumption that S6/S7 is wrapped up within a year / it takes about a year for everything to be somewhat stable (and that Opeli survives S6/S7...)
Ezran is 13, Callum is just shy of 18, Rayla is shy of 19, Soren is 21, Claudia is 19, and Opeli is 32.
Claudia and Terry's relationship did not survive all the upheaval, and after a short stay where they're both at the castle as friends, Terry departs for the western Katolis border for a fresh start (and to meet other, more open-minded humans). Claudia and Soren (taking a leave) go to Del Bar to reconnect with their mother and her family; the relationship is established, if perpetually strained.
Callum stays on that year as high mage, but he and Rayla know they'll be happier long term in Xadia / he can do more good studying and teaching the arcana to others by leaving. They move to the Hollow Wood (just magic-y, human friendly, and Moonshadow-y enough for them), a bustling Moonshadow city that isn't far from the Silvergrove (which let Rayla back in, but she likewise wants a fresh start). Callum teaches/studies manual connections to arcanum, and Rayla learns physical therapy and eventually teaches it, apprenticing in the city. They also appreciate the Anonymity that comes with a life away from court/Katolis. [ 20k oneshot detailing this first year away is outlined in my head ] They make sure to visit regularly though
Having a vacant High Mage position, Claudia and Soren come back, and she tentatively takes it up, at first more informally and then in title. (She has the Sun arcanum and it suits her). She brews a lot of remedies to help her body heal from the dark magic use over the years, as well as ones for Ezran as king and Opeli (stuff to ward off carpal tunnel and sore throats from talking a lot). Also plenty of hot brown morning potion. Claudia apprentices with Mavi, the castle physician.
Soren and Corvus start dating (Soren is like 22, Corvus is 24) and Moonshadow elf reintegration at the border starts, particularly in Ellis' town thanks to the Moon Nexus. Upon invitation, she comes to live at the castle as a veterinarian and Lujanne's Moon arcanum protege. Rayla and Callum get married (aged 20 and 21 respectively). Soren asks Corvus (and Opeli) to dance at the wedding
Wanting ultimately different things from life, Corvus and Soren break up a couple years later. Soren is 24 going on 25, and begins to take more notice of Opeli, as Corvus leaves to do more inter-Pentarchy reconnaissance for Ezran at the western border of the kingdom. He flirts with her, half-jokingly, and Opeli flatly shuts him down, and they become closer friends as Barius grows older and less likely to attend council meetings, and with Corvus as a buffer (as Opeli was always closer to him and more like minded)
Ezran is around 15 and strikes up a courtship with Ellis, but it is short lived. They stay friends, he introduces her more formally to Queen Aanya, and the two girls take an interest in each other. Soren (25-26) and Opeli (36-37) become quite good friends, often addressing each other affectionately as Captain and Cleric, respectively, Soren helping her learn how to defend herself (thank you jelly for the headcanon), and sharing snippets of poetry with each other. When Opeli has to travel home after her father's death to help put her estranged family's affairs in order, Soren accompanies her for safety reasons
Ezran is 17, and begins to develop some burgeoning feelings for Claudia, who still sees him as a young friend / more little brother figure. He and Soren go on a trip round the Pentarchy for about half a year for diplomacy reasons, and then come home when he's 18 going on 19. The time away and shifts in looks/personality allows Claudia to start seeing Ezran as more of an adult, but not totally as a love option (yet consciously anyway). Soren suspects there's been a shift on Ezran's end
Terry (24-ish) and Corvus (29-ish) meet at a pub and think the other person looks Strangely Familiar. However, there are plenty of elves and humans of all sorts out here at the borders, especially since Katolis and Duren's western borders open up the rest of the Pentarchy, and more elves are returning to their abandoned Nexuses / travelling to sell wares and help remove the spaces that dark magic previously filled. They become good friends, even if Terry is far more close-lipped about his past, and are dating for a little while before realizing why/how their pasts are intertwined. After a good laugh, some questions, and even more tears, they keep on going
Soren, who is 27, begins flirting more openly with Opeli (38) again. She finds herself surprisingly flustered, although they don't court plainly, it does eventually get there emotionally to the point there's Something going on, but Opeli firmly keeps it in limbo / is convinced that Soren will lose interest (we shall come back to this theme)
Ezran is 21 and helps officiate Ellis' and Aanya's wedding. He asks Claudia to dance; she accepts (under Opeli's hypocritically judgmental eye, tbh) and Soren likewise begins to think there's something persistent there on both sides. Callum and Rayla roll back into the Pentarchy for it and stay for a few weeks afterwards at the Banther Lodge with everyone; Callum is able to be civil with Claudia. He and Rayla (26 and 27) are pregnant with their first child.
Around 22, Ezran confesses to but is turned down by Claudia, who cites that she is too old/broken/damaged for him and that it'll pass, in spite of the fact she's fairly certain she is 1) mutually in love with him and 2) this is permanent on her end, not wanting to ruin his life 'again'.
A few months after, there is an attempt on Ezran's life from a pro-human anti-reunification extremist; Claudia's remedies save his life and the distance between them dwindles further. A concerned Callum and Corvus return from the castle, although Callum is doubly stressed as Rayla is 7-8 months pregnant back at home (the freed from coins in-laws have come to lend some help as well).
It becomes apparent that Claudia and Ezran are courting, quietly, to Opeli and to Soren, although most of the rest of the staff remain oblivious. Claudia is fearful of what everyone will say, and Ezran doesn't want to scare her off, so they keep it a secret. Opeli is greatly disapproving, partially due to the age gap but mostly due to Claudia's history, but Soren steps in to defend his sister and make sure Opeli doesn't spoil their happiness. Unhappily, she backs off
Corvus, visiting in the castle for the first time in a while, notes the changes between both pairs, and also discusses his relationship with Terry to Claudia and to Soren, who are happy for them (if find it mildly weirdly awkward/hilarious that their former partners are together). While Opeli, Soren, and Ezran make a trip to Xadia to go visit Rayllum and the new baby, Claudia goes to visit Terry, and the two renew their friendship properly; she encourages him and Corvus to get married, as Terry is beginning to plan for it
Shortly thereafter, Soren (29-30) and Opeli (40-41) start a physical thing, although Soren knows that it's More than that even if Opeli won't quite say it out loud. She subsequently backs off her disapproval of Claudia and Ezran, leaving the two confused and delighted respectively, although Claudia puts the pieces and respects her brother's privacy. Opeli tries to put up some more distance, fearing she's grown too attached / being quietly jealous when Soren has another woman interested in him, she eventually fesses up and the two are fully a couple. Opeli steps down as High Cleric but remains on the Council
At 23-24, Ezran proposes to Claudia (29-30), who full on panics, and flees to her mother's home in Del Bar. Ezran follows, and Lissa is very dryly aware that the King of Katolis is on her doorstep, but gives the two time to talk and her daughter some marginally helpful advice. A letter from Terry likewise helps. Claudia gleefully, tearfully does accept the proposal and goes back home, even if she's nervous about finally telling Callum (and Rayla's had some suspicions for a while now)
Callum and Rayla comes home for Soren (31) and Opeli's (42) winter wedding and stay a few weeks with their firstborn son, Raeven, who's around 2-3 years old. Rayla is pregnant with their second child. Ezran explains that he and Claudia have been courting for just under 2 years and that he intends to marry her. Callum does not take it well, for a variety of reasons, and it's one of the biggest, if not biggest, arguments the brothers have
Rayla and Callum leave, and the brothers don't speak to each other for 4-5 months, till Rayla needles that he wouldn't want Ez to meet the birth of their baby, and Callum folds and apologizes. He's not happy about it, but it's Ezran's choice and he can't stop him
Soren (32) and Opeli (42-43) are unexpectedly pregnant with twins (Opeli being a future sister-in-law of her king is not something she ever suspected, never mind that her children would marginally be in line for the throne and cousins with said heirs). Claudia and Terry swap ideas for their weddings (because Corvus beat Terry to the proposal punch) even if she's a bit more overwhelmed by a Royal wedding and mildly amused she's still having one, it's just not to Callum the way she'd always assumed it would be when they were young
The Sorpeli twins (Briella, she/her, and Brynn, she/they) are born in spring pretty close to the second Rayllum fanbaby, Juni (she/her). The births both go smoothly. Ezran (25) and Claudia (31) are married.
Callum remains civil but still a bit colder with Claudia until she (now 32) and Ezran (26) are having their first child, and there's complications in the birth/pregnancy due to prior dark magic use. He warms up a lot, seeing first how worried Ez is and how continually loyal/devoted Claudia is to his brother, and the fact they named their baby Sarai II doesn't hurt either. A few years later Claudia and Ezran have their second and last son, Daryenn. They take trips every once in a while (alongside Soren and Opeli sometimes) to go visit Corvus and Terry and their couple of kids as well
Assuming everyone here 1) lives throughout the show and 2) an epilogue doesn't show who anyone else is married to except Rayllum (in which case for Claudia in particular I will have the time of my life writing a Clauderry divorce fic) this is my canon, this is my endgame, no one can take it away from me, Thank You Goodnight

Sooo. Off to actually playing the game I go. Hope it won’t crash.
And if you’re wondering it’s my own created town.
It’s called Moonshadow Hollow.
Beautiful, creepy & mysterious.
Full of aliens, magic users, fae, merpeople, hybrids, weres, vamps, angels & demons.

a new TDP visual parallel
Spoilers from the Tales of Xadia Gloaming Glade art below!
This is Hollow Wood, a Moonshadow village in the second Tales of Xadia playtest tale! It's gorgeous and I adore it. Thanks to @random-fandom-ramble and @kotikala for excitedly waving this image at me so I could stare at it too!

Once I realized that it can be zoomable from the website, one of the first things I spotted was a certain familiar pattern.

How interesting.
I've had a headcanon for a while that Ethari could be from Hollow Wood. And maybe he is! Or maybe this is a standard layout for Moonshadow towns? Is it a rune as well as city planning? Does the Silvergrove actually look like this amidst its trees, too?
Whether it's simply that Ethari is from this specific town, or whether this rune means something positive and precious for towns and loved ones alike, or something else, this delightful discovery is making my day even better than it was.
