Been thinking about how it's so easy to give up. I struggled with ONE sum today, did it five times and spent ¼ of an hour on it before I finally got it. Listen, whatever you're doing, don't give up so easily. It doesn't only help u solve a stupid math problem, but it makes you stronger as a person, and builds ur grit. There's no course you could take, or tips you could read to do that.

So please, don't give in. You're not done yet.

FILIPINOS URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP: A CALL TO ACTION

hi, all.. i know that a lot of our focus is on the BlackLivesMatter movement atm (which is wonderful and should’ve happened a long time ago), and i hate to distract you from that, but there’s something horrible happening in my country, the Philippines (yes, the one being lead by the so-called Filipino version of Donald Trump), right now.

our national government has passed a bill that’ll essentially take away our constitutional rights to freedom of speech and fair trial. it’s called the Anti-Terrorism Bill, but we’ve dubbed it Terror Bill. here’s a summary of what it entails:

if you want to read the actual bill in its entirety, here’s a link to the official Senate of the Philippines website, where you can download a pdf copy. i’d like you to keep in mind the political climate in our country, though, and just how rampant corruption and police brutality are here.

it has already been passed by the Senate; all it needs is the House of Representatives’ approval, and it will be enforced. if you want to help stop this from happening, here are a few ways:

sign and share this petition. we’re so close to 300,000 signatures!!!

send e-mails to the Office of the President and the Senate. there’s an e-mail protest currently going on. i have qualms about copy-pasting the message, but ultimately, this method is a lot more effective than petitions:

educate yourself about the bill and how it will affect us when it’s approved. here are some news articles, editorials, and thought pieces to get you started:

your help could save the lives of millions of Filipinos, and we’d really, really appreciate it. i don’t usually ask for much, but when it comes to urgent issues like this, i can’t stay silent. unlike with BLM, i can speak my truth about this because i know personally what it’s like to be a Filipino citizen and to live in the Philippines. i hope it’s heard, and we keep an ounce of what little dignity we have as a “sovereign” country and rights as a “sovereign” people.

I had two exams this week – psychology on Monday and TEFL yesterday, and I hope they both went alright! Taking the exams also meant being on campus for the 2nd and 3rd time ever, which was nice. Maybe next semester, I can actually go there for classes as well…

After my second exam, I walked over to the lake nearby and spent some time reading and looking out at the water to unwind. The buildings of this campus might be slowly falling apart thanks to chronic under-funding, but I love having an actual campus at all (my bachelor's classes all just took place in various buildings around town…) and how central it is in the city!

It snowed last night! But it melted rather quickly. Funnyly enough I had some photos laying around my desk from when it snowed heavily at the beginning of the year. ❄️

Anyway, today was a rather productive day! Got up at 7 a.m. and read through a short paper first thing, because there will be a presentation tonight. Afterwards I worked through my weekly work pensum because I want to concentrate on the introduction of my masters thesis and the transcription of the last file for the rest of the week. In 2 weeks it's my turn to do a little presentation about my masters thesis and I want everyone to read the intro beforehand so it needs to be more or less done by next week. Apart from that I will read through some literature before going to uni later.

Also finished reading my book: The Cat who Saved Books!

I got my stitches from wisdom tooth surgery removed yesterday. There's still a large gap in my gum but the dentist reckons it'll be fine. The rest of the tissue is healing well so it's good news 💜

february 1, 2022 - a new start

hello friends! it’s been a while. i wasn’t planning on taking a long hiatus, but i’ve decided to come back now. how are you all doing? i hope you’ve all been safe and well~ i survived my first year of grad school, and i’m now almost halfway through my second year. in addition to work, this is the main reason why i was gone. it takes up most of my time, but i’m gradually learning how to manage my time better. grad school has been a tough journey, but i’m doing my best to hang in there!

thank you all so much for being here and continuing to support me. i know i’ve lost a few of you while i was away, but i’m grateful for those of you who have stayed. i’m happy and proud to be part of such an amazing community!

on another note, happy lunar new year to those who celebrate! i got a haircut yesterday, and today i ate homemade 年糕 (nian gao) and braised shiitake mushrooms with my family. i wish you all the best in the new year, and i hope you can achieve your goals with bravery and strength like a tiger! remember to take good care of yourself, too! 🐯💕✨

finished persuasion this week! tbh I think emma is by far my favourite jane austen book. I'm grateful to lily for keeping me company during my lectures, but this heathen just refuses to sit somewhere reasonable like my lap or an empty space on the table (ok those are scarce so fair enough) and instead decides she Must sit on whatever I'm writing at the moment.
