what if I just made a lore post about my goblin character. WHAT is STOPPING me. I love her literally so much and I’m still so frustrated that the campaign I ended up playing her in turned out to be SO LOUSY and I would LOVE to get to play her all over again in another life/context where I get to do more cool shit with her aaaaa

Melbatoast is from a small-to-middling messy goblin clan who live in a somewhat swampy environment, though it is actually quite close to an area of volcanic activity as well. There were maybe four ‘families’ in her clan, all fairly large - goblins don’t really make a huge deal out of like, blood family relationships? The goblin language doesn’t even really have words for a lot of things common language does, like “mother” or “uncle” or whatever, there’s basically just one word per sex for “person whose blood I share” and mostly that’s to keep track of who is and who isn’t for like, the purposes of not getting super inbred. It’s a pseudo-matriarchal society and by other cultures’ terms the woman who was kind of the de facto clan leader was Melbatoast’s aunt, or like, cousin-once-removed, or something. but that wasn’t important. 

A lot of what goblin society primarily values is the concept of possessions and ownership, which is why gobbos sometimes were and still are stereotyped pretty badly as being hoarders and thieves. really, it’s just the core tenet of their lifestyle to treat material possessions with a lot of respect and prominence! and to hold onto anything that comes your way because being able to have those resources available to you as broadly and readily as possible brings strength. as such they don’t put a lot of faith in, or respect on, the sort of Arcane Arts™ - some older generations in particular are very distrustful and disdainful of magic, or anything that can “make something out of nothing.” builders, craftspersons and artisans who can work with their hands have way higher standing. not a lot of magic in goblin communities. 

unnnnfortunately, some of the stereotype and the sometimes-negative treatment of goblins by society at large DID lead to many clans like, making this a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, and a lot of goblins ARE now in the business of being sort of petty criminals, either for their own good or in the employ of others. you know. Melbatoast’s clan/family is a lot like this, in a way that never really sat right with her, but the majority of them just seem kind of...defeatist? like, welp, this is our lot in life as Goblins In This World, this is how it always is, this is what we’re good for. and she went along with it to a certain degree growing up but it was NEVER satisfying and she always felt kind of fish-out-of-water-y when she was expected to be underhanded or pickpockety. she did her best to pick up more crafty skills instead, but again, her clan is fairly small, and there just weren’t always people around who had skills they were able to teach her. they were poor and a little bit disenfranchised and yeah, they were pickpockets. the easiest marks were often researchers and other academics who were venturing to and from the volcanic area to study its properties. 

one day, Melbatoast manages to slip a bag off a young studious type, and it is... there’s basically nothing of value in it. this guy is effectively a broke college student, and almost everything inside of it is notes and paperwork, a large leather journal jammed full of loose sheets in addition to the pages actually bound in it, tied shut with twine, marked and dogeared all over. it’s a hideous hot mess. it’s extravagant and Melbatoast LOVES it, is fascinated by it. As she digs deeper into it, what she discovers turns out to be the personal spellbook of a novice wizard. She has, like, ZERO experience with magic prior to this, but this is the most interesting new and weird thing she has ever seen in her boring, uncomfortable life of stealing and conniving to get by. she becomes obsessed with this wizard’s learnings and starts trying to get a harness on them herself. she is - just as much to her surprise as to anyone else’s - a remarkably quick study. suddenly, she’s doing cantrips! she figures out Feather Fall and Thunderwave and Alarm! She finds some extremely rudimentary schematics for a set of arcanomechanical armor, which she takes to with her limited artisan skills she’s managed to acquire thusfar and like. makes. for herself. 

she’s DOING STUFF that ISN’T JUST THE SAME STUFF SHE’S ALWAYS DONE for the first time in her life and it like, changes her. She’s honestly kind of furious that she could have been doing this COOL SHIT the whole time and she just never knew there was this whole other world of magic and other disciplines out there that weren’t just her shitty goblin clan going nowhere fast. so she puts her armor together, collects all of her important Material Goblin possessions, and just. leaves. She doesn’t care about family or clan anymore and she doesn’t want to be some trashy criminal for the rest of her life. She’s a wizard now and she is going to go out there and be the best fucking wizard the world has ever seen. she is going to acquire magic and power and renown, knowledge, reputation - intangible things, which she’s realizing now she’s actually way more into than any object she’s ever been able to hold with her hands.

New genshin oc! I havent figured out a name for them (or pronouns, or past) but I love their design (this is literally the first drawing of them I did, and it's only a chibi because i have MAJOR art block today and can't rlly draw anything other than that ;-;)

They're sixteen yrs old and the head of the fatui engineers! (If you already couldn't tell, they have the fatui symbol on their chest) Though, they really only joined the fatui because they supply them with all the materials and tools that they need in order to make their machines (their fascination for machinery has been a very unhealthy lifelong hyperfixation) they have an electro vison, making it easier for them to charge up their machines and weapons.

They have autism (like me lol) and are a victim of neglect from an alchoholic father. They talk to themselves a lot and sometimes sees hallucinations of kids from their old middle school. They have a lack of empathy for other people and is extremely smart, climbing the ranks of the fatui engineers within weeks

(Thats all I have on them for now, but I already love em'! Hope to have more info and art of them in the future)

Of all the concept images, this is one of those that I keep coming back to most. Who are these guys, as in what faction (known, known-but-yet-unseen, new?)? Cut for length.

Disclaimer, speculation.

The first time I saw the vid my brain said “Tevinter Siccari?” but now idk. Tevinter fashion is quite... specific, with its pointy shapes and “dire opulence” and everything, although there are some gold elements in places.

These peoples’ attire seems specific in its own way though. Thinking about the factions in “known Thedas”, the place where sleek-shaped gold armor pieces really jumps out is ancient elves, such as we see in Solas’ Trespasser outfit and in the Sentinels. 

Even much of ancient elvhen weaponry seems to be gold, although it’s not a direct one-to-one compared to the weapons in the new concept art.

Speaking of weapons, these peoples’ weapons are so distinctive and seem unlike anything we’ve yet seen so far. Are they magic? I’m not suggesting these people have anything to do with templars at all, but that bow is shooting a beam of light (green light, is that significant?) and what I was reminded of was the special anti-wage weapons Tevinter templars have (well, when they’re allowed access to them) that shoot beams of light. Plenty magic weapons exist in the lore anyways. Can anyone use these peoples’ weapons, or do you have to be a mage to make them work? Another idle wondering here is about gameplay, like a new class or something like cross-classing. Or is this technology? There’s speculation which wonders if these people are Executors or their agents, which is an exciting idea. We have no idea really about the technological capabilities of those across the sea, and these shards are triangle-shaped, like the Executors’ emblem.

I mentioned elsewhere that it looks like the one using the ‘shield’ is fending off red lyrium tentacle-type things similar to the ones conceptually demo’d in a different part of the video.

So anyway, my hope is that these people are ancient elves (obviously without seeing their ears we can’t tell) - probably they’d be agents of Fen’Harel if so? More generally speaking the Sentinels have obviously persisted through the ages, there was Felassan, there are hints at others in the lore. The way the agents we encounter in the last story in TN are described makes it sound like they or one of them might be ancients too - fancy armor, no vallaslin, no downcast/fearful City Elf air, unlike any elves the Assassin had ever seen, pros, one sounds Dalish only “more formal, like he’s reading a poem” etc. I think Solas’ agents are a mix of ancient and modern elves, so this wouldn’t be an out-there idea that these guys are ancient elves. Also, the idea that this is a first look (potentially) at Solas’ DA4 ‘faction’ makes me aaaaaa

One last thing, about these peoples’ combat style and equipment, and how all ancient elves had magical talent before the Veil: remember Solas’ dialogue on the Knight-Enchanter specialization? Those techniques descended from those of ancient elvhen mages called arcane warriors (obviously we already have Cillian and the spec in DAO). The formal name for those techniques back then was the dirth’ena enasalin, knowledge that led to victory. 

Mages who eschewed physical confrontation called it ghilan’him banal’vhen, the path that leads astray. The arcane warriors were elite guardsman, serving as bodyguards or champions for nobles. Mages who focused on spirits or the Fade might sneer at their physicality, but never doubted their honor. They were the living embodiment of will made manifest, mind shaping the body to the perfect weapon.

Here’s the intersection of warrior/rogue-style combat with magic ability. The ancient elvhen arcane warriors are what this concept art make me think of. That green light-arrow reminds me of the Knight-Enchanter spec’s green magic sword that gets manifested. This idea that these are ancients who followed this path, might explain why these people are essentially using a ‘shield’ and a bow, but “kinda magicky-ly” - like is that arrow maybe will made manifest? Also I like the parallels, I don’t want the Agents of Fen’Harel as a faction to get Cerberus ME3 treatment and suddenly have like 9757474 members who constantly appear in droves everywhere (that was silly in a narmy way given the previously-established Cerberus lore, and would be silly for this faction too) [Please note that here I am not comparing Solas to Cerberus or TIM, I’m just referring to the narmy treatment Cerberus got in ME3 as a group], but Solas’ agents in the modern world will include bodyguards, guardsmen, fighters and the like, surely?, a few focal champions too, in among all the spies and saboteurs etc. And he once was essentially kinda a part of the noble elite, for a time. so I’ll say again, aaaaa
