Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia (Unofficial Video)
So, you've been to school for a year or two And you know you've seen it all In daddy's car, thinking you'll go far Back east your type don't crawl Playing ethnicky jazz to parade your snazz On your five-grand stereo Braggin' that you know how the niggers feel cold And the slums got so much soul It's time to taste what you most fear Right Guard will not help you here Brace yourself, my dear Brace yourself, my dear It's a holiday in Cambodia It's tough, kid, but it's life It's a holiday in Cambodia Don't forget to pack a wife You're a star-belly sneetch, you suck like a leech You want everyone to act like you Kiss ass while you bitch, so you can get rich But your boss gets richer off you Well, you'll work harder with a gun in your back For a bowl of rice a day Slave for soldiers 'til you starve Then your head is skewered on a stake Now you can go where people are one Now you can go where they get things done What you need, my son What you need, my son Is a holiday in Cambodia Where people dress in black Need a holiday in Cambodia Where you'll kiss ass or crack Pol Pot, Pol Pot Pol Pot, Pol Pot Pol Pot, Pol Pot Pol Pot, Pol Pot And it's a holiday in Cambodia Where you'll do what you're told A holiday in Cambodia Where the slums got so much soul

Oscar and double Palme d’Or winner Michael Haneke has become the latest prominent European artist to lament what he calls a “witch hunt” in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Speaking with Kurier, the Austrian filmmaker said there is no question that “any form of rape or coercion is punishable… But this hysterical pre-judgment which is spreading now, I find absolutely disgusting. And I don’t want to know how many of these accusations related to incidents 20 or 30 years ago are primarily statements that have little to do with sexual assault.”
The renown director of Amour, The White Ribbon, The Piano Teacher and last year’s Happy End allowed he would probably be referred to as “Haneke, the male chauvinist pig” after making the comments in the interview. He qualified his statements saying the current debate is disturbing because of “the blind rage that’s not based on facts and the prejudices that destroy the lives of people whose crime has not been proved in numerous cases. People are simply assassinated in the media, ruining lives and careers.”
Asked if this escalation can help transform society for the better, Haneke responded, “Any shi*storm that even comes out on the forums of serious online news outlets after such ‘revelations’ poisons the social climate. And this makes every argument on this very important subject even more difficult. The malignancy that hits you on the internet often stifles you. This new puritanism imbued with a hatred of men that comes in the wake of the #MeToo movement worries me.”
He noted that Nagisa Ôshima’s film In The Realm Of The Senses, which he calls “one of the deepest and most profound on the subject of sexuality,” could not be made today “because the funding institutions would not allow this, anticipating obedience to this terror. Suspected actors are cut out of movies and TV series in order not to lose (audiences). Where are we living? In the new Middle Ages?”
Haneke stressed that “this has nothing to do with the fact that every sexual assault and all violence — whether against women or men — should be condemned and punished. But the witch hunt should be left in the Middle Ages.”
The filmmaker, who recently teamed with UFA Fiction to create his first TV series, dystopian drama Kelvin’s Book, is the latest to speak out on the perceived negative consequences of #MeToo. In January, French actress Catherine Deneuve was among 100 women who signed an open letter, slamming what they termed “expeditious justice” spurred by the movement. Brigitte Bardot has also criticized the movement and prominent French film distributor Stéphane Célérier recently compared the current situation to that of the Salem witches.

A general tip for students who are sending those dreaded Religious Absence Emails to your professors: Rather than asking permission to take the day(s) off, politely let them know that you will be taking the day(s) off.
In other words, consider not saying this:
"May I miss class on [date] so I can observe [holiday]?"
It's not that there's anything wrong with the above, per se. But because it's phrased as a request, it risks coming across as optional — a favor you hope to be granted. Problem is, favors are not owed, and so unfortunately asking permission opens the door for the professor to respond "Thanks for asking. No, you may not. :)"
Instead, try something along the lines of:
"I will need to miss class on [date] because I will be observing [holiday]. I wanted to let you know of this conflict now, and to ask your assistance in making arrangements for making up whatever material I may miss as a result of this absence."
This is pretty formal language (naturally, you can and should tweak it to sound more like your voice). But the important piece is that, while still being respectful, it shifts the focus of the discussion so that the question becomes not "Is it okay for me to observe my religion?", but rather, "How can we best accommodate my observance?"
Because the first question should not be up for debate: freedom of religion is a right, not a favor. And the second question is the subject you need to discuss.
(Ideally, do this after you've looked up your school's policy on religious absences, so you know what you're working within and that religious discrimination is illegal. Just in case your professor forgot.)

Did you know that 💯 of people who have ever had a drink of water, in fact, 💯 of people who have ever SEEN water, will eventually die?
Be careful with stats and figures that people present in an effort to influence your paradigm. While it may fit to some degree it is often more dangerous to your health than simply making an informed decision. Many people want you to think and believe the exact same as they do, which I find bewildering as so many of them are stressed out and unhappy! Dude, why would I want to follow that? Then there are many more who realize that so they fake smiles and marriages and take lots of pictures in beautiful places to convince you they’re worth following. Follow your heart and mind when they are quiet and peaceful, they’ll treat you well and that is why fear tactics are often so effective. Destroy a person’s sense of safety and peace and you will destroy their ability to make intelligent decisions. Whether information is true, false, or skewed dramatically, if it scares you then you will be more likely to act from survival mode than a place of logic and love. If it scares you then distance yourself from it. Fear is there for a reason. We can’t change the world. We can’t stop the violence or the hatred. We can’t cure disease or end racism or sexism or abuse through fear. Be of peace. Be of love. Rest and know there is a plan and all will end as it should. There is good and there is evil in this world and what use is it if our “good” people immerse themselves neck deep in evil every day in some misplaced desire to fight it? You fight acts of evil with acts of good, not by researching evil 😂. Find your faith and pray for peace within yourself. Dream of beautiful things and work hard to create them. Love EVERYONE the very best you can. Remember, Jesus approached the Samaritan woman at the well and the Samaritans HATED the Jews. He treated her with love while chastising the Jews who should have known better. Today we have many people who claim to follow him while spreading hatred and fear and attacking their enemies at every turn and then they sit and preach to the choir.
Matthew 5:43-47
(King James Version)
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

okay just because I'm losing my mind over Major Anthony Havers and the very horrible, bad, not good day:
I'm still kinda glad that he was there witnessing Cap's death. And not solely for the Captain's sake.
I mean Cap was not really subtle about his affection and yet when he said "I say, Havers!" my boy almost gave himself whiplash (I made a long as post about what follows before but let me just summarise). Havers looks at him expectantly and when Cap doesn't bring up the courage to tell him how he feels (two times in a row at that), Havers looks dissapointed and crestfallen but manages to keep a stiff upper lip.
In short he suspected and reciprocated but from what we have seen he never really got a real confirmation about Cap's feelings for him.
(Tbh I still think he would have been so so tempted to stay if Cap had said anything)
So now skip forward a few years. The war is over, Havers got wounded at the front line, he has to attend an event and then he sees Cap.
The man who corrected his "I shall miss you, Havers" , who tried to confess something but didn't, Mr. 17 points on the agenda, his stickler for rules and authorities Captain broke into an event, stole some medals and is clearly there looking for and trying to talk to Havers. Years after they have last seen each other.
And I think in that moment Havers got the confirmation he wanted. So when Cap tries to finally vocalise it, he stops him because 1.) The man should really not waste breath right now 2.) They are in danger because of where they are and whom they surrounded by and 3.) He doesn't need to say it. Havers finally knows what he kinda knew all along. What Cap just did to get to him speaks louder than words and it's finally a clear confirmation on how Cap feels.
And then to go even further Cap adresses him by his first name. Not his rank, or his last name. He adresses the man behind the uniform as an equal. And Havers does the same. No Captain, no Sir, just the name of the man he loves who is now dying in front of him.
And it's heartwrenching and horrible to think about but we all said that at least Cap died knowing that he was loved.
And that's why I'm a bit glad about it happening that way because now Havers has some closure as well. He can now live his life after all the horrors at least knowing that yes he was loved through all of it.

i think the usage of "AI" as a synonym for ML models is deeply misleading because it lends itself to thinking about those models as if they were almost-people which do things themselves, rather than tools which people use to do things
this is a consequence of the broader fact that AI is a theatrical term with no technical meaning, but it's especially prominent wrt neural networks because their PR has focused heavily on playing up purported similarities with human minds ("neural network", "machine learning", etc)
up until the last couple years, you could say a piece of art was "made with AI" and mean "genetic algorithm plus perlin noise and particles", or your phone's predictive text, or a Tracery generative text grammar. having a wide variety of technical methods in mind when you say "AI" makes it easier to see through the hype on any one method, and gives more basis to think through what's actually going on in the theatrical performance of AI. even then the illusion is powerful

I've been pushing myself to be more open about being trans and the positive and negative of it, not to prove that I am a person, but to show other trans people that they aren't alone. I owe my life, I think, to the trans people who have done this - gone into the nitty-gritty - and if I could do that even at a fraction of the effect, then my job is done. I don't exist to prove I am a human person and neither do you - you are already enough of a person.
