Elvis' first LP cover 📀

A LITTLE BACKGROUND STORY ABOUT THE PICTURES USED AS COVERS FOR ELVIS' FIRST LP "ELVIS PRESLEY" RELEASED ON MARCH 23, 1956. All the pictures were taken in 1955.

Known as the "Tonsil Photo", the picture of Elvis holding his 1955 Martin D-28 guitar (with custom made tooled leather cover with his name "Elvis Presley" blazoned across the front), as used on the front cover for his first RCA LP, was taken on July 31st 1955 in Tampa, Florida, according to Tampa photographer William V. "Red" Robertson, who took the picture.

Colonel Parker hired quite a few different studios and photographers to photograph Elvis in the 50s for commercial purposes. Williams Vernon "Red" Robertson was one of the professional photographers hired by Parker, in his case to photograph a show with Elvis Presley on July 31, 1955. Robertson did field work for his Robertson & Fresh commercial photography studio, a firm active in Tampa from 1932 to 1960. Roberton's business partner, Harry Fresh, processed and printed the images. The "tonsil photo" since taken was extensively used in newspaper and print to promote future shows in the 50s, and due to its use in Elvis' first LP, specially, it's one of the most famous pictures of the King of Rock and Roll.

THE BACK COVER

On November 30th 1955, Elvis and the Colonel flew to New York, where they register at the Hotel Victoria on Fifty-first Street.

On Thursday, December 1st 1955, Elvis and the Colonel met RCA executives, including president Larry Kanaga and publicity director Anne Fulchino, at the RCA's Twenty-fourth Street studio in New York.

JUST SO YOU KNOW: I think there isn't photos of Elvis with RCA's president Larry Kanaga (at least I haven't found one yet) but below is a photograph from another day (in the future) of EP and Anne Fulchino, publicist for RCA Victor's Pop Record Division. Back to December 1st, 1955: A photo shoot was arranged and pictures of Elvis and the Colonel, Elvis and Steve Sholes and Elvis and fellow RCA recording artist Eddy Arnold, who happened to be in New York for a session, were taken in December 1st 1955.

After the pictures with other people, Elvis was photographed by himself... a lot (I mean it). From all the pictures, four of them (posed action shots of Elvis) were used on the back of Elvis' first album.

"FINED $100 AND COSTS." Kingston Daily Standard. September 18, 1912. Page 1. --- Joseph McConnell Pleaded Guilty to Infraction of liquor Law ---- Joseph McConnell, proprietor of the Williamsville Hotel, appeared before Magistrate Farrell this morning in answer to the charge of keeping liquor for sale on the premises of a temperance house and on pleading guilty, he was fined $100 and costs with the option of three months in jail. Mr. McMillan, of Kirkpatrick, Roger & Nickle appeared for McConnell and entered a plea of guilty on behalf of his client.

The case arises from the inspection of the premises of the Williamsville Hotel on Saturday afternoon by Provincial Inspector Morrison, Inspector Wright and County Inspector Moreland. A quantity of whiskey, wine and beer together with some empty bottles discovered on the premises were confiscated at the time of the inspection.

Mr. MeConnell paid his fine.

The Twins At A Glance- The Minnesota Twins got some great news after a scary few days in Anaheim. Kyle Garlick, another player, and a staff member tested positive for COVID and the team had three games postponed. The team finally got cleared to fly to Oakland after testing negative for two straight days, while being quarantined in their hotel in Anaheim. The Twins get back to work after taking a beating from the Angels on Friday night. The three days off will either really help them or hurt them. In 2018, the Twins had three straight games postponed then a day off and it was the start of the end in that season. It sounded like Byron Buxton was expected to be back in the lineup on Saturday night. Brent Rooker was rumored to be activated as well. I guess we’ll see what roster moves the Twins make prior to the doubleheader on Tuesday night. The team can also call up a 27th player for Tuesday’s games. Josh Donaldson has been great when in the lineup. He is hitting 4-for-7 in three games this year. Nelson Cruz is hitting .390 with four homers and ten RBI’s. Taylor Rogers hasn’t allowed a run in 5 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. Willians Astudillo threw a 1-2-3 inning on Friday night and jokingly announced his consideration for the Cy Young award on Instagram. 

The Athletics At A Glance- The A’s have had a story of two seasons in 2021. They started the year (1-7) and were reeling until they won eight straight games. They swept the Tigers in a four-game series this past weekend and got an off day on Monday with the postponement. Jed Lowrie is back for his third stint in Oakland. He leads the team with a .333 average and twelve RBI’s. Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, and Mark Cahna have three homers each. The team traded for Elvis Andrus this offseason, but he’s hitting just .127. The starting pitching started off slow, but has picked up. Chris Bassitt, Frankie Montas, and Sean Manaea have had good starts the last two turns in the rotation. The A’s bullpen has found a way even without Trevor Rosenthal, who will miss lots of time with right shoulder inflammation. Lou Trivino is off to a good start with an 0.84 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. Former Twin farmhand Deolis Guerra has given up one run in six innings of work. Yusmeiro Petit has a 2.08 ERA and is so versatile out of the bullpen. You might not recognize Sergio Romo out of the bullpen. He shaved his beard for the first time in years after a bad start. 

What To Watch For- The A’s went (4-3) against the Twins in 2019. The A’s took two out of three games in Oakland in July then split a four-game series in mid-July. Matt Shoemaker is (6-3) with a 4.03 ERA in sixteen career games against the A’s. Mitch Moreland has three homers off him and Stephen Piscotty has two off Shoemaker. Sean Manaea is (2-1) with a 3.94 ERA in three starts against the Twins. Nelson Cruz has taken Manaea deep three times. Jose Berrios has a 4.64 ERA in four games versus the A’s. Frankie Montas has a 5.63 ERA in five games against the Twins. This will be the first time the Twins will hear a different public address announcer in Oakland. Dick Callahan’s voice was one of the best and deemed “the voice of God.” He passed away in January of 2021 and Amelia Schimmel will replace him. I’ve heard her before and she carries a similar style that Callahan had. Schimmel is the third female public address announcer behind the great Renel Brooks-Moon with the Giants and Marysol Castro with the Mets. This will no doubt be a tough three games for the Twins after a crazy three days in Anaheim.

Title: The Outlander

Summary:

In the aftermath of the landslide, there was a reporter that came to do a story on the event and a photographer who took pictures of the mess. One of the photos were the survivors, including Mary and McEchern. The perspective shifts to the twin at a hotel, where they spot Mary on the newspaper. They immediately tried to find her and were quick to spot her. The widow had no choice but to run as they shot at her. The perspective changes again to William Moreland. He was on a mission to find Mary, which ended with him finding Henry's wife. They talked about where she could have been. Soon Mary was caught and brought to jail to Willow Cane. Mary was forced to spend 3 days in jail while a judge reviewed the charges. Back to Williams’s perspective, he is in Frank and starts to talk to McEchern about  finding Mary. Back at the prison Mary escapes prison and is on her way back to Frank. When the twins found out one of them absolutely still wanted to chase her down but the other was hesitant. Finally the two were reunited and all came to an end. McEchern is leaving town and the two are free to do what they please.

Critical Analysis:

This section of reading was unlike anything of the previous readings. There was a lot more action and suspense. However what stayed constant was the theme revolving around relationships. Even while in jail, there were people that were still watching over her. “Someone has been very helpful and written me an anonymous note saying that you are pregnant...If this is true, it could be in your favour.” (The Outlander, page 366) The reader knows that this is a lie which shows how friendships are beneficial. All throughout the novel Mary has always kept William in her thoughts which confirms the ongoing thematic concept of relationship. William was introduced in the beginning of the book but he was quickly taken out, until the very end where they reunite. There was no lesson in this novel however there was a thematic concept of making meaningful relationships 

Personal Response:

Gil Adamson’s novel The Outlander had a great ending. It did end on a cliffhanger as the reader does not know what the twins will do, whether they continue to hunt her or not, however there was a reasonable ending that does left me satisfied. The one question that I wanted to know is why Mary killed her husband. I thought by the end of the book I would figure it out however that was not the case. Overall I enjoyed the book but would not read a sequel. There was not as much action and suspense that I anticipated when researching the book. I imagined the book to be more thrilling. The author also puts in a lot of detail into each scene which is interesting at times but is useless.

"TWO TEMPERANCE HOTELS RAIDED," Daily Standard (Kingston, Ont.). September 16, 1912. Page 1. --- Inspectors Seized Large Quarities of Beer. --- Joseph McConnell and Charles Fralick Charged With Violation of License Laws. --- Provincial License Inspector Morrison, Toronto, C. W. Wright, the local license inspector, and County Inspector John Moreland, visited the Williamsville hotel, and the Cataraqui Driving Park hotel on Saturday afternoon and as the result of their inspection charges of keeping liquor on the premises of hotels that have no license were laid against Joseph McConnell, of the Williamsville hotel, and Charles Fralick, the propreitor of the Cataraqui Driving Park hotel, and the accused will be tried on Wednesday.

In the case of the Williamsville hotel, first visited, a collection, consisting of a full case of Fisher's beer, three pint bottles of whiskey, two bottles of port wine and one bottle of "soft stuff" - ordinarily used for "chasers" were discovered and left in charge of Mr. Wright, while the other two inspectors went on to the Cataraqui Driving Park hotel, where after searching the premises, they discovered the bar paraphernalia and in a hen house discovered about thirty-six full quart bottles of Fisher's ale and about fifteen dozen empty bottles, bearing the label of the Portsmouth Brewery.

Neither of the accused men, had anything to say for publication to- day.

The case against Joseph McConnell will be heard before Magistrate Farrell. At Wednesday morning's session of the police court, and Charles Fralick will come before Justices of the Peace Hunter and Bradshaw, also on Wednesday.

The collection of liquor and beer from the two hotels is on exhibition in the office of the local inspector.
