#morgan watches: teenage bounty hunters

In the live-action "One Piece" adaptation, there's a brief confrontation in which Cabaji says that Zoro chased him and his brother through the jungles of Goa Kingdom or something. Which made me think IMMEDIATELY about an AU in which Zoro and Luffy meet early, when Luffy is around 15 or so and Zoro is around 17, sometime shortly after Ace has set out on his own adventure and Luffy is on his own.

So, like, imagine Zoro being this 17yo bounty hunter who thinks he's hot shit, people are starting to call him "THE Demon of East Blue". He gets one Cabaji brother but the other escapes, leaving Zoro injured and alone in the jungle (similar to the side wound that Zoro gets at Orange Town in the manga). It's getting dark, he has a corpse to drag back to a Marine base somewhere back in Goa Kingdom, and there are beasts here. He thinks he can see a tiger, stalking him in the bush.

And then some 15yo in a straw hat and shorts bounces out of the trees going, "WHOOOOOAAAAA, you're SO cool! I was watching your fight! You're amazing! You should join my pirate crew!" Like... what? (If there was a tiger, the tiger has fucking RUN FOR IT. It doesn't want to be EATEN.)

So, Luffy drags Zoro back to Dadan's place for medical aid ("YOU BROUGHT A BOUNTY HUNTER INTO MY HOUSE?!" Dadan yells, while her guys patch up this kid anyway) and politely introduces Zoro to Makino ("I'm not going to be your first mate, don't introduce me that way," Zoro says for the tenth time already). And Zoro ends up being convinced to stick around Dawn Island and Foosha Village to train for a month (and also to heal, but that's less persuasive), with Luffy following him around like a starry-eyed puppy the entire time, unless he's dragging Zoro off to fight beasts and each other in the jungle. Kicking the shit out of each other is a sign of FRIENDSHIP.

Seeing Luffy's burgeoning fighting skills is enough to make Zoro go, "Maybe this kid is alright," and hearing Luffy talk about dreams is the beginning of Zoro's doom. But he's not going to sign up until Luffy is more impressive! If Luffy wants him for his crew, he has to come find Zoro when he sets out on his own adventure. And Luffy agrees this is reasonable even if he's going to miss his new best friend sooooo badly.

Now, I'm a Zolu fan (ace-spectrum Luffy), so I like to imagine Zoro and Luffy having a really dorky teenage romance between future monsters here. If only because when Luffy and Nami bust into Captain Morgan's Marine Base, Luffy can go (after 2 years of having Makino keep track of Zoro in the newspapers), "Oh, my boyfriend is here!!! 😃 I wonder how much stronger he's gotten? I need to impress him so that he'll join my pirate crew!!!" And Nami and Koby can be like, "What the FUCK are you talking about?! The PIRATE HUNTER?! The demon who kills pirates?!" Luffy: "Yeah! ❤️"

Even better if Luffy has already gone to a couple different islands (with or without Koby), loudly going, "I'm going to be King of the Pirates! And also, HAS ANYONE SEEN MY BOYFRIEND?! He has green hair and three swords and he gets lost really easily!" Or maybe Luffy was just shouting this on Alvida's ship and around the town under Morgan's control? It doesn't really matter. It just has to be loud enough that Garp finally catches wind of this situation.

Love In Hate Nation - a new musical by Joe Iconis

Intro

Hey, y’all, wonder what our favorite Tony nominated composer is up to these days? Well, a lot. He has 3 upcoming musicals, but we’re gonna talk about one in particular, his next one. It’s called Love In Hate Nation, for which he is writing the music, lyrics, and book.

Here’s the description from Joe’s website:

A turbulent rock romance set in a 1960s Juvie Hall, Love in Hate Nation uses classic “bad girl” movies as the inspiration for the story of young people caught between eras of a changing America. Sixteen-year old Susannah Son is carted off to the National Reformatory for Girls to get her head put on straight. There she meets the aggressively incorrigible Sheila Nail, and a relationship forms which leads to an all-out “revolution in the institution” as they attempt to break out of the boxes society has created around them. Girl Group Wall of Sound harmonies are filtered through a punk rock spirit in this rebellious and romantic new musical.

The show will make its world premiere at Two River Theater in New Jersey (the place where BMC started!) and will run from November 9th to December 1st 2019.

Cast/Creatives

The cast will feature Sydney Farley (Gloria “Ya Ya” Meeks), Amina Faye (Susannah Son), Jasmine Forsberg (Brenda “Rat” Ratowski), Lauren Marcus (Miss Asp), Kelly McIntyre (Sheila Nail), Lena Skeele (Dorothy Donaldson), Emerson Smith (Kitty Minx), Ryan Vona (The Guy), and Tatiana Wechsler (Judith Ramone).

The rest of the creative/design team includes: scenic designer Meredith Reis, costume designer Karen Perry, lighting designer Jen Schriever, and sound designer Palmer Hefferan. Orchestrations and music supervision are by Charlie Rosen, with music direction by Geraldine Anello, and choreography by Mayte Natalio.

Although this is its world premiere, there actually was a previous production of this show in 2018 by Penn State’s musical theater program (where John Simpkins works), who originally commissioned Joe to write the show. The cast included Amina Faye, Katie Griffith, Talia Suskauer (a swing in BMC!), Lena Skeele, Jasmine Forsberg (cast member of Broadway Bounty Hunter), Morgan Hecker, MiKayla McKasey, Caleb Smith, and Kevin Dort. Amina, Lena, and Jasmine will be reprising their roles.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6: Alicia and Strand Make a Friend in Episode 2 Clip

This season, Fear the Walking Dead has adopted an anthology story structure, with last Sunday’s season premiere focusing on the very-much-alive Morgan, who just barely survived the wrath of axe-swingin’, baked bean-eatin’ bounty hunter Emile LaRoux, hired by none other than the trailblazing Virginia (Colby Minifie). Needless to say, by the end of the episode it looks like Morgan’s fighting spirit is rejuvenated, and he’s dead set on wresting his people from Ginny’s grasp.

This Sunday’s episode focuses on Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Strand (Colman Domingo) as they struggle to navigate Virginia’s thriving settlement, where they’ve been delegated less-than-desirable societal roles, to put it mildly. 

In the new clip, Alicia and Strand are escorted in handcuffs down the dirt roads of Lawton. They meet an ostensibly friendly teenager named Dakota, who claims to know who they are and bears a striking resemblance to a certain red-headed boss lady. Watch the clip below.

The episode’s official synopsis reads: “Virginia forces Alicia and Strand to clear an unusual walker threat, where an encounter with a new ally gives Strand an idea that could be the key to their freedom.” 

It stands to reason that Dakota would be the “new ally” the synopsis eludes to. Could she in fact be Virginia’s blood? Sure looks that way, but we’ll find out for sure on Sunday. Alicia and Strand seem to get along nicely with her from the get-go, but virtually no one we meet on the show is exactly who they appear to be on the surface.

Recently, Domingo told Den of Geek that we’ll be seeing the “ultimate” version of Victor Strand emerge this season. It was hinted at last season that Strand may be considering working with or for Ginny in some capacity, and according to the synopsis, he’s got a big idea rattling around that crafty mind of his. The handcuffs in the clip certainly indicate that he isn’t exactly thriving in Lawton. But if he chooses to help Ginny’s in her mission to expand her operations, it could drive a serious rift between him and his old friends. 

Also of note is that Sunday’s episode was directed by Morgan himself, Lennie James, who recently spoke with Den of Geek about his experience getting behind the camera for the first time. Fear the Walking Dead season 6 episode 2 airs on Oct. 18 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.

aside from general rebellion, what does nora spend her free time doing? what are her hobbies and interests? does she prefer pastimes that include her friends and family, or does she prefer to spend her alone? or does that change from time to time?

A good question, thank you for asking! Though Nora loves to drive more orderly people up a wall with her antics, that’s just the face she most commonly presents.

As far as her family goes, her mother’s no longer around and her father’s generally absent; he’s a mercenary, and a discharged United States Marine. He’s often deployed on other continents on various jobs. But she and her older brother, Frederick, are almost inseparable even on a bad day. He’s often involved in some way or another with her stunts, though more often than not, he’s running damage control. Her older sister’s a biker, and left for Sturgis at 18 - Nora and Fred only see her every few months, but it’s always a party when she comes back. She’s most of where Nora gets her colorful vocabulary, though Holly certainly has more restraint. Nora can’t help but cheer whenever Holly comes riding back into town, looking like a western bounty hunter with her eyepatch and wild hair.

As for whether she prefers spending time with family or alone, that depends on the day. Typically, she only really goes solo if no one else is available, and those days are usually spent hanging around arcades or being productive around the house and keeping things in order. Despite what her behavior might lead one to believe, she’s actually very cleanly and keeps her home as presentable as possible. Otherwise, she’s either with Fred, or with her best friend (and love interest in most ‘verses), Morgan Wright (@abundleofocs). She loves spending time with Morgan. Especially considering Morgan’s her biggest enabler.

She has plenty of hobbies, though! She actually thoroughly enjoys chess; just like her father, she’s a decent tactician, and is usually two or three moves ahead of her partner at any given time. Though overconfidence sometimes comes back to bite her in the rear. Beyond that, at the arcade, she plays games like Street Fighter competitively. She’s mastered some difficult combos and plays in small tournaments, what few there still are. Outside of games, though? Boating and fishing are some of her favorite things to do. Few things feel as rewarding to her as going out for a day on the water and coming back home for a big fish fry. She’ll happily cook for friends or even strangers, too. Any guest in her home is welcome to it!

Nora also frequently watches Animal Planet. Growing up, she never missed an episode of the Crocodile Hunter series. Nor Lost Tapes, though that was because it scared her friends and she liked to laugh at the effects. The Skinwalker episode scared her, too, though. As a teenager, she’s a big fan of Jeremy Wade’s River Monsters series. She thinks he’s a badass. Nora’s also interested in true crime series as well, and is actually studying criminology on the side - though she’s also abundantly knowledgeable of most firearms. One of her hobbies involves customizing them, be it by altering components or just adding nifty decals that make ‘em look cool. She always learns everything she can about the weapon beforehand and takes extra care in taking it apart; she’s taken hunter-safety classes and takes firearm handling & safety very seriously, and takes hunting & conservation equally seriously. She has a membership with Ducks Unlimited, to boot!

Though one of her favorite hobbies involves CB Radios. Each person in her friend group has one - Nora herself, Fred, Haru, Morgan, Nea, Flora, and Miko. Nora keeps her setup in the garage, and they all chat regularly through it and do goofy impressions, just laughing it up and being friends. Nora and Fred especially enjoy doing impressions from Smokey and the Bandit, one of their favorite films. She had help for it, but two of the CB radios (her own and Nea’s) were old models and had to be taken apart, fixed up, and rebuilt. She really, really doesn’t want to have to do that again. It made her brain hurt.

Her most secretive hobby, though, is actually surprisingly simple, and one she shares with Nea! She anonymously sends love, positivity, and hilarious memery to her closest friends and family, be it online or through letters. She tries to keep them laughing even when she’s not around. But don’t tell anyone - she’s got a reputation to uphold! People might start to think she actually has a heart! The horror! (☞ﾟヮﾟ)☞
