               he looked a bit SOUR at the mention of the holidays —— it was nothing personal, of course. bede simply wasn’t the festive type, and for good reason, at that. it wasn’t exactly easy to get very EXCITED over a celebration revolving around spending quality time when friends and family —— not when he had spent so many years going without either.      ( even now, while he wasn’t necessarily ALONE anymore, it still left the boy feeling quite bitter. )

               still. this wasn’t about him.

                ❝ the same as they USUALLY do, i’d expect. ❞ bede replied, with an offhanded shrug. ❝ providing security. perhaps helping with the decorations —— if we can TRUST them not to make a mess of things, that is. we do try to SPOIL the pokemon a bit on christmas itself —— usually with new toys and treats. ❞ the morgrem were obviously no exception.

❝ i feel      ASKING  FOR  THEIR  ASSISTANCE  IN  THIS  ENDEAVOR      would grant me an unfair advantage. ❞ that and the fact that he was only allowed a limited number of eggs —— knowing the morgrem horde, they would be      JUST  AS  LIKELY  TO  EAT  THEM      as they would be to throw them. ultimately, the gym leader thought it would be better to leave them to their own devices.

❝ i suppose you could make the argument that      HATTERENE  HAS  BEEN  HELPING  ME ,      but i can assure you, she would involve herself whether i asked her to or not. ❞ the fairy type was known for being quite protective of her human, after all.      ( even as bede spoke,      SHE  LOOMED  OMINOUSLY  OVER  HIS  SHOULDER.      )

               bede stared at the small group of fairy types, brow furrowing ever so slightly in confusion. the morgrem stared back, oddly silent for what was usually such a rambunctious species — perhaps they were waiting for something?      ( but what? ) bede could only assume.

               hesitantly, the gym leader raised a finger to point in the direction of the tangle. ❝ i’m not entirely certain if you’re aware, but your home is over there. ❞ a small chatter ran through the group of pokemon. then, one by one, they all lifted their own arms to point — this time at bede, with wide, toothy grins adorning their little faces. he stared. was this supposed to some sort of game to them? copying him? ❝ go back to glimwood. off with you, come on. ❞ bede tried again, this time in a sterner tone. after a moment, the morgrem shot back with a garbled chorus of noise.      ( throwing his words back in his face, no doubt. )

               rolling his eyes, the fairy trainer spun on his heel and started to walk back to the gym. okay. okay, fine. be that way. he would just ignore them, then.

               ... only for a brief look over his shoulder to confirm the mogrem were indeed following bede like a group of baby ducklett. perhaps this would prove to be a bigger inconvenience than he thought.

               ❝ unfortunately, i feel this problem runs a bit deeper than a hug could possibly hope to fix. ❞ trauma. it was trauma.      ( though bede was reluctant to put a name to the feeling — as if doing so would give it more power. )

               hatterene had helped him move to a quiet spot away from the fighting, if only to give him an opportunity to calm down. somehow, against all odds     ( or so it seemed ) the gym leader managed to get his breathing under control. that alone was fine — all he needed, really. certainly he could handle everything else on the ride over. after all, it wouldn’t matter if his knees felt weak and his hands were trembling like fall leaves if bede wasn’t expected to walk there on his own.

                raising a shaky fingers to his lips, the fairy trainer whistled, loud and ear-splittingly shrill. after a moment, a blur of green streaked across the sky, and the flygon from before landed on the ground in front of him.

               he shook his head. ❝ no, better to play polite. they’re perfectly capable of embarrassing themselves on their own, regardless. ❞

                ❝ well, i never taught them anything of the sort. ❞ bede replied, keeping a careful eye over a trio of the morgrem as they danced around mawile. it was a bit like a game to them, he thought — much less so to the steel type, who was known for being irritable and prone to acts of aggression even on her best days.      ( it was the reason why no one had dared try training her until bede came along. ) as the gym leader watched, two of the morgrem kept her preoccupied by darting in and out of the range of her snapping jaws, while a third quickly scrambled off with an armful of the food she had been eating. at his cue, the pair that had been harassing mawile darted away with victorious trills. he couldn’t help but smirk a bit as the steel type settled down to finish the rest of her meal, none the wiser.

               the morgrem then proceeded to squabble over their earnings in scratchy little voices, tugging each other’s hair and hissing. ah well.

               ❝ they do seem like quite the effective unit when it comes to taking down much larger foes. ❞ bede mused, turning back. ❝ i suppose that’s why the wild ones living in glimwood tangle are regarded with such caution. ❞ even the strongest trainer was only allowed to carry a team of six, after all. ❝ it obviously isn’t a viable tactic in any official league battle, yet it’s nothing if not entertaining to observe. ❞

                ❝ ballonlea stadium occasionally collaborates with the local pokemon center to assist in the care of injured pokemon from the tangle. thankfully, that means we’re already well-equipped to provide for them — to a certain degree, at least. ❞ there were quite a few morgrem, bede couldn’t help but think, as he watched them bicker over food and play with an assortment of toys. hatterene tried to look absolutely indifferent      ( if not outright inconvenienced ) yet the gym leader knew he had spotted her earlier using her tentacle like a swing to give a few of the fairy types a ride.

               ❝ i was hoping in time they would eventually lose interest and decide to go home, but it seems that isn’t going to be the case. ❞ he frowned, tapping his chin thoughtfully with a finger. ❝ i suppose we could look into handing out a some of the more evenly tempered ones to young trainers around ballonlea in need of a starter. ❞ a morgrem was quite the handful as far as first pokemon were concerned, but residents of the little town in glimwood always did have a special way with fairy types. 

               bede glanced down, feeling something tapping against his leg. a morgrem, holding up a bouncy ball. his eyes were wide and pleading, bottom lip jutting out in a pout. with a sigh, bede crouched down and patted the top of his head.

               ❝ i suppose the rest, we could train for work around the stadium. perhaps to assist with security or my gym mission. my trainers may even take in a few for themselves. ❞ he plucked the ball from the morgrem’s hands and tossed it, the fairy type giving chase with a delighted chitter.

               ❝ in terms of morgrem at the stadium, some of them react very NEGATIVELY to having their hair touched. others couldn’t be more different. ❞

               from the litany of complaints he received after the fact, apparently the gym trainers      ( respectfully ) disagreed. too bad.

               ❝ of course, one of them did try to WELCOME me home by... eating my phone. ❞ he made a face. ❝ the rotom inside was unharmed, thank arceus. unfortunately, i can’t say the same for the rest; everything else was completely unsalvageable. what an INCONVENIENCE. ❞

               after a moment of thought, bede added, ❝ i suppose the number, whatever it may be, is liable to drop somewhat in the coming days as we find the morgrem fitting homes. that being said, i have a feeling we’ll still be caring for the majority of them. ❞ ten, or perhaps fifteen, then.
