Using this panel as an excuse to point out how freaking beautiful Thriller Bark is, but also...I think it's interesting that Moriah chooses to live this way.
There are certain aspects of Thriller Bark that can't be helped, like the foggy darkness of the Florian Triangle, and other things that seem part of Moriah’s base personality, as even in his younger years he seemed to have a flair for the gothic. But I do think it’s significant Moriah chose to turn his island-sized ship into a giant graveyard.
Much of Thriller Bark is about loss and how people respond to it. Compare how Moriah treats his dead to Brook. After his loss to Kaido he isolates himself, lets himself go, outsources all the hard work of being Pirate King to zombies he doesn't give two shits about and who don’t feel pain to avoid being hurt again.
Brook isn't able to bury his crew until after he gets his shadow back, but he does the best with the resources he has, while honoring their last memory and wishes. He eagerly jumps at the chance to make new friends and find a new crew, because the simple joy of being alive is enough to sustain him through fifty years of horrible isolation.
Moriah is surrounded by a loyal followers, but he doesn't seem to spend any time with them. He never could bring himself to make meaningful connections again after enduring the loss of his first crew.
Both characters are haunted by the dead, quite literally surrounded by corpses on all sides, but despite those similar circumstances, their pain and loss take them on very different paths

when you don’t know who you are and you think you’re human and normal until you find out you’re not human, not normal, you’re something else entirely and whatever idea you had about yourself was fucking wrong and you can do weird unnatural things that scare you and aren’t fully controllable yet. and you just want to understand yourself and control yourself so you don’t hurt anyone and can still be the person you think you are instead whatever the truth holds for you.
and you try and use this weird new truth about yourself to try and do good and help the world you were born in and come to love so much and you’re like a hero you wanna be a hero. but the world doesn’t love you back or see you as a hero, it hates you. it doesn’t believe you’re a hero. it doesn’t know what you are , it doesn’t know why you’re here , it demands that you answer the same questions you’ve had your whole life
and instead of finding the answer you find something else . You find a way to do good and be loved and accepted and feel normal despite yourself and you think you’ve found a foothold you think you’ve found understanding at long last . You think you belong snd you think This Is Who You Are until it’s ripped the fuck away from you when finally you learn the truth you’ve been fearing yet searching so hard for. you finally have answers to the lifelong questions of who are you what are you really where do you come from and boom. You’re not a hero . You’re the very threat and danger that the world kept saying you were, kept hurting you because they thought you were.
Every single weird thing you can do has a purpose to destroy and kill and you are born to be a weapon and you can never love anything. Or be loved in return because what you are is a weapon a monster a freak a thing that should not be a thing that will never belong and is fundamentally unlovable . And you’re sorry that’s what you are. You’re so sorry that’s what you are and you hate that it’s the truth and you wish you could go back to not knowing anything at all and you wish you could stop being this fucking Thing but you can’t because it’s in your fucking blood and your DNA and your double helixes and your flesh and nerves and everything.
Your entire body and being and existence and core is made for something horrible and evil and you hate it but you can’t do anything about it except say you’re sorry and offer yourself to the gun or the altar because you still. At the point where you’ve relegated yourself to only being this thing, you still don’t want to, . The last good thing you can do at this point is let yourself die and spare the world from your own inescapable inherent biological ruinousness.

"Fabian, why the hell have you decided to move across the damn country with my pregnant daughter? What on God's green Earth made you think that was a good idea? Moriah's just told me and honestly I don't know what to say."
Tumblr media
"It's so nice out here, Beth loves it. It's a small town and everyone's really traditional -- just good, honest, people. It's not like we're moving to San My or San Sequoia. And it's so cheap! I've bought an old-school ranch house, it was only $40,000, we're moving in soon. And groceries are only-"
Tumblr media
"I'd rather you move to San My or San Sequoia! At least we have family there. Have you even thought about why it's so cheap? There'll be no jobs! Do you have a job lined up?"
Tumblr media
"Well, not really, but I was thinking. Maybe we could set up a little satellite church? We could run it out of our house at first and then see how it goes. I wouldn't need much money and I reckon the people here would really like what you preach. More than most of the Brindleton folk."
Tumblr media
"You may be right about that last part, there's an awful lot of liberals up here. I really don't think you're cut out to be a pastor, you're too quiet. But here's the thing, the Bible is very clear that we should provide for our family, it says so in Timothy 5:8. So, for the benefit of my daughter and grandchildren not being destitute, I'll let you try it out. If you mess up, I will not be funding it anymore, is that clear? You'll have to live with your current decisions if that happens."
Tumblr media
"I understand, thank you for this."

I am a sucker for shadow based powers, and I love it when Moriah breaks out more traditional shadow abilities. The doppelgänger and brick bat attacks are really neat and gives some insight how he might have fought prior to relying on zombies.
Also, that Moriah face is exquisite.

Stripped Car, Chase Twichell/Moriah, Supernatural S14E20
“I know there’s an enemy— look at all the damage it’s doing. Maybe it’s still a baby,\its weak neck wobbling as its carriage lurches over the broken pavement.\But probably by now it’s a sulking adolescent starting to look like serious trouble,\with a silky little shadow-moustache and a gun. Who’ll kill it? Will I?\What if it doesn’t look like the enemy? What if it comes disguised as a savior, or resembles nothing so much as hunger,\so that everyone has his own private piece to kill? Will we do it?”

ooh can't stop thinking about this!! the athing about cas getting killed in moriah instead of Mary is like. it would take the tragedy to the next level!!
at the end of th day, the point of moriah is like. revealing god as this merciless, selfish creature without a care for the things he's made. he thinks only of his personal enjoyment and he's so full of himself about his writing prowess or whatever right. and the tragedy of it all in the futility of human effort in the face of a god like that.
not to forgive dean for his crimes and transgressions, BUT, he *does* lower his gun. like that's an important moment in the entire episode, even though it gets glossed over to the point of people thinking he probably shot jack. he didn't! like this is that bible story — Issac and Abraham — but it's turned on its head. God goads Man into sacrificing his Son. And Man says No. In the moment before he is supposed to pull the trigger. he lowers his gun, says No. says I Won't and Can't do it. And God who pardoned humans once, he says, well if you can't, i will. it's. INSANE. like!!! the point is that at this juncture, the story has spun out so far beyond their control that they can fight it but it will mean nothing. because God's here and he hates you and he loves you and you're his toys and he's pulling your plastic heads off and there's nothing you can do to stop him!
Now coming back to Mary: I think one of the problems with Moriah is like. Mary's death is just. not enough of a catalyst for them. (also Jack in the box is thee most confusing episode TO ME like that's another reason Moriah will never be That Effective. bc like. dean locked him in a box!! who cares about his little moment of redemption!! but okay). Like okay we as a fandom love her, but also, let's be real, her realtionships with the characters are not developed well enough. most of my friends who watch the show but don't participate in fandom were like. i didn't even care that she died. because it *was* like that. Like first of all, there's no meaning to it except to further Male Angst and it doesn't work because they didn't want to develop her character properly anyway. I just feel like. If it was Cas tho. the conflict between them would be That Much More Intense.
From dean's fucked up perspective, Jack has already killed Cas once. Add to that his soullessness — which, for Dean, completely transforms him from Jack, my son into The Thing That Looks Like Jack is like. I think his rage would feel more justified for the audience, solely because he's shown it in some capacity before. And it. like. makes sense.
Even from Jack's PoV, that's HIS DAD. And the extent of how his being Soulless affects him. like. you can see it when he feels anxious about his actions resulting in something bad but he can't dredge up the pain that comes with losing someone so important to him. It would've been heartbreaking to see his confusion in that moment. ADD TO THIS the fact that Cas, like, traded himself to the Empty for Jack, and all that. OOF.
Anyway. this post is very vague i do have scenarios brewing in my head that i think would make this more clear but!!! just!!! i am thinking about it!!
