The Original Texting Machine 🪧

On this day, 1838, Samuel Morse demonstrated his telegraph system for the first time at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, New Jersey. Morse’s invention meant people could send messages across the country in just a few minutes, rather than taking days or weeks through traditional mail. This innovation was especially important for news organizations, who could now report on current events in real-time.

Morse continued to work on and improve the telegraph, eventually developing the Morse Code system in use today. The Morse Code system uses a series of dots and dashes to represent letters and numbers, making it possible to quickly transmit messages through telegraph wires.

Morse was successful in impressing lawmakers, who afforded him the funding he needed to construct a telegraph line from Washington to Baltimore. On May 24, 1844, just outside the Supreme Court Chamber in the Capitol and again before a congressional audience, he inaugurated the line by sending the first official telegraph message, “What hath God wrought?”

despite what most people would think, choosing the support acts for your upcoming tours is easier said than done.

between making sure their sound is right for what it is you want from the show, scheduling, negotiating payments and so much more, it’s a pain that makes bobbi wish her band’s first song hummingbird heartbeat hadn’t been so popular. that is until her manager sends the link to an up and coming band’s debut album, lightning strike.

she doesn’t even need to finish listening to the first song before she knows that this is the one. and, as any sensible millennial in her situation would do, she heads straight to social media to find out more about the band, quake, and its lead singer, daisy johnson.

when daisy gets the call from her manager that bobbi morse, as in the bobbi morse, lead singer of mockingbird, had personally reached out to her to see if quake would like to be the support act for her european tour, she handles it fairly well. or, as well as she could, screaming down the phone into her manager’s ear before calling her band mates to tell them the good news, screaming still.

it’s only when she meets the woman for the first time, at the soundcheck for their first gig in belfast, that she realises the dire mistake she’s made. because there was no way she’d make it through the tour, in this close quarters with the woman of her dreams, and not make a fool of herself and wind up having substantiated feelings for her aside from lust and adoration.

little did she know that bobbi was thinking the exact same thing.

I drew another photo of what I think the man who speaks in dots and dashes looks like. I don’t really know why I’m doing this. I think it just brings some comfort in knowing that he might be real. Maybe he’s not bad. Maybe he just needs help.
