SUBLIME CINEMA #640 - DERSU UZALA
By the time Kurosawa was offered Dersu Uzala by Soviet studio Mosfilm , he had just attempted suicide after a short-lived, failed Hollywood career and a string of unsuccessful films. This movie was made during that period of shakiness, funding droughts, and deep depression for the director, whom Darryl Zanuck had recently declared mentally ill.
It turned into one of Kurosawa’s best and most self-reflective works, and it’s his only 70mm outing. The film is shot entirely on eye level, keeping you oriented as a spectator to an ever encroaching vastness of the Taiga - where the film was made, under grueling conditions.
I’ve never seen a good transfer of this, and I’m not sure one exists; this is almost a forgotten Kurosawa but deserves a solid restoration.

The recent Soviet films that I've watched!
These are some of the Soviet films that I've watched and I recommend you to have a look as well! These films are starting to grow on me ever since my interest in Russian culture began to develop! And I believe everyone should watch these films, as well!
1. Garage — Eldar Ryazanov
Tumblr media
The first film I watched was "Garage". It is a one-room film which I oddly enjoyed? In some parts, I laughed, and in some parts, I went serious.
It's about a group of people who argue about losing their parking spots for the garage because of a new highway construction, but the way they hilariously created the tension and the drama is what brings me close to this story! I liked it so far and you should give it a go, as well!
2. Afonya — Georgiy Daneliya
Tumblr media
The second movie I watched. They said this movie was a "comedy".
HOW IS THIS A COMEDY?
They must have mistakenly thought this movie would make others laugh, but instead.. why do I feel hopeless? Why am I depressed while I'm watching it? Poor Afonya, man.. tells a lot how a man feels given up at some point and when he tries to change things always go downhill for him. Sometimes Afonya is not guilty, but sometimes he is. Being disconnected from reality is the worst thing that could happen to one person.
But, aside from the depressive moments, this movie was so well made! And in between I realised the protagonist is played by the SAME actor who played the role of George Miloslavsky from Ivan Vasilievich Changes Profession! I'm able to guess the actors now and it's such a miracle now *sniff*
3. Beware of the Car — Eldar Ryazanov
Tumblr media
The third film was directed by the same person who also created "The Garage". I first thought of watching this film for Anatoli Papanov and Andrei Mironov, but somehow it also touched my heart for the protagonist, Yuri Detochkin as well. Sure he did steal cars, but sold them for good intentions. I also loved the friendship between him and the detective Maxim, and how he deals with the inner conflict of whether he wants to defend his friend or portray him as a thief. This film was so heartwarming, it felt like almost crying.

Unknown, MOSFILM technicians prepare to score a scene from the great Sergei Bondarchuk version of War and Peace. 1967
if you’ve never seen this, it’s an amazing movie version of the nearly unfilmable novel. I used to watch a bootleg version but the subtitles were pretty rough. Criterion has since released it with good titles and you can see it on their channel or buy it( like I did.)

If you want to see some Soviet cinema, the Mosfilm channel on youtube has some pretty good ones. Stalker, Battleship Potemkin, Come and See, and others. Just finished watching Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven and it was pretty good.

Got some real strong Sergio Leone vibes from it.
It's not all great though. The English subtitles on The Fall of Berlin pt 1 were all fucked up, but alas.
