Living in a forest in the Pacific Northwest provides ample opportunity for moss to grow on pretty much anything. Seriously. Anything. With enough shade, water & time, things green-up pretty quickly. Especially during the rainy season. Even rocks. Moss loves rocks. These two varieties grow in my backyard that butts right up against a forest of ferns & cedars. The first two photos are of the same variety: Knights plume moss, but the lighter one gets more sun & the darker one thrives in the shade. I love their feathery, fern-frondy shape. It’s my favorite. The other, broom fork moss, is a dark dweller. It’s spreading in the area below the upper deck in the backyard where the area receives very little light. Especially during the winter. They are both beautiful varieties & I’m finding that trying to get rid of the moss in my front lawn is a losing battle. I’ve given up & quite enjoy the spongy coolness of the moss as compared to the spiky grass. A plant as commonplace as moss deserves to be elevated within the realm of its beauty & wonder.
