Rebels Rewatch: "Visions And Voices"
Maul returns to be a menace and freak both me and Ezra out.
Obligatory "I've already done a live reaction version of this episode" link.
Tumblr media
From the very beginning, with just the washed out dingy lighting and the whooshing wind sound effect, this episode already feels unsettling. The atmospheric touches here with the storm and lightning and the camera movement and shot choice once things start happening evoke a horror movie.
The way they have Hera's voice fading out and going watery every time Maul calls to Ezra, the way Ezra keeps squinting and blinking and the tiny headshake he gives like he's trying to shake off some fatigue or jerk himself alert, make himself stop seeing things...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He looks so frightened. :(
Tumblr media
COURSE I DON'T BLAME HIM WITH THE APPARITION OF MAUL LOOKING LIKE THIS.
Tumblr media
Kanan and Zeb both trying to shake him awake after he faints. <3
I mentioned in my original liveblog but this episode gives me major Teen Titans 2003 "Haunted" vibes, with the plotline about a character being menaced by an imaginary villain only they can see. Rebels ultimately diverged from that parallel but my mental "If I had a nickel for every time" associations linger.
Something I loved about this episode was just how present everyone was for Ezra, how worried and concerned they were over him. Like here, all the members of the crew, even Chopper, are crowded in Kanan's room waiting for him to wake up.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: How Ezra touches the back of his neck like he's trying to rub out some stiffness or ache.
Oh hang on, did I just stumble across another Kanera-Sabezra mirror?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I DID! :D
Getting a little ahead of myself though, gotta appreciate this moment here with Ezra's fond little smile as Sabine bullies AP-5 about the munitions they're taking.
Tumblr media
Also Sabine's "Can you believe this guy?" look lol.
Sabine immediately knows to send Chopper for Kanan. (Oh look, the two of them being the Most Important People in Ezra's life again. :D)
Tumblr media
Sabine is very worried and alarmed this whole scene. She knows this isn't like him and oh ouch there are those Teen Titans "Haunted" feels come back to stab me again.
It's not actually clear what Maul was doing with this whole making-Ezra-see-him-everywhere trick--and you know it was deliberate, Ezra wasn't getting anything useful out of his end of the mind bond--but honestly the visions going unexplained are effectively creepy and unsettling enough. Personally I think it was one part to scare Ezra, make him doubt himself and his own mind, make him and everyone else think he was going crazy, and one part to manipulate him into doing something horrible he'd regret so that the Rebels would cast him out and drive him to Maul.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
:((((
Hera understandably takes Ezra off the mission in light of events and heads it up herself. There's very soft worried mom energy radiating off her in this scene.
I'm kind of amazed Kanan and Sabine putting a tracker on Ezra without telling him didn't get any rancid takes complaining about how ~cLeArLy tOxIc~ it was. Maybe people actually remembered the part of Ezra's characterization where he tends to impulsively go off half-cocked to save people and figured, "Oh, Kanan's taking some obvious precautions in case he does that." Or maybe they decided given two previous kidnapping attempts Kanan was allowed a little paranoia over his kid.
Aaaaaaand this is the first we've heard Ezra's theme in a while.
(Note: Sabine has already painted one of Ezra's new Scout Trooper helmets, which he decides to wear to see Bendu. Even though the last time they rode the speeder into the Bendu's hollow he didn't bother wearing a helmet at all. Upgraded your comfort item/security blanket metaphor there, Ezra, eh?)
Full on horror strings here as we pan up to Maul just chilling like a creeper at the top of the hollow.
The way Ezra almost steps between Maul and Kanan. <3
Something I loved this episode was Ezra consistently rejecting Maul's attempts to touch him, smacking or shoving his hand off his shoulder, deliberately stepping away and keeping a distance.
Since a straightforward request was denied, Maul resorts to blackmail, threatening to broadcast the location of the base to the Empire and oof, Ezra's face.
Tumblr media
Maul then dangles the "key to defeating the Sith" carrot in front of them, which activates Ezra's Hero Complex and hyper-responsibility and is what makes him agree to go. See, Maul is his responsibility, it's his fault Maul is even after them in the first place, so Ezra feels a sense of obligation to take care of him as a personal problem.
Love how Kanan says Phoenix Squadron will just wholecloth pack up and move to a new base in order to keep Ezra safe. I don't think it works like that Kanan, lol, but the spirit is appreciated.
Ezra's awfully confident that Maul won't hurt him and, ngl, that is not a risk I would have taken. But Kanan decides to trust Ezra and so the snippet of Ezra's theme that's been playing (marking his gesture of self-sacrifice) gives way to the same cue that played when Vader was descending on top of the TIE Advanced in "Twilight of the Apprentice", kind of an auditory callback to Malachor and the start of this whole arc.
Sabine's already getting the Phantom II prepped. <3
Tumblr media
Dathomir looks appropriately hellish. Twisted gnarled trees, barren rocks, broken architecture, drenched in deep red with fog obscuring the horizon.
It's subtle at first and grows more obvious as the episode carries on but Maul is a little bit, ah... bipolar in his actions and displays of emotion here. He oscillates between speaking calmly, growling in frustration, outright snapping at Ezra sometimes, cackling to himself randomly, and of course dropping his voice down into that soft, vulnerable cadence that's his go-to whenever he wants to garner and play to Ezra's sympathies. Ezra takes his erratic behavior in stride, for the most part, doesn't flinch or comment on Maul's mood swings.
Tumblr media
Really do love the environment work Rebels does. <3
Ezra flippantly dismissing Maul's murder hoard as "junk" lol.
"Fun" easter egg to note: The scrawled Mand'oa on the wall spells KENOBI.
Aaaaaaand our introduction of the plot device that is the darksaber, displayed prominently under a cubist painting of Satine, whose theme plays as Ezra examines the darksaber. This reference is pure fanservice for TCW fans. It basically means nothing to me emotionally, I was never a fan of Satine or her romance with Obi-Wan, so mostly I just feel offended and creeped out on her behalf that a painting of her got hauled to Maul's murder cave and defaced.
(Interesting to note that the slashes of... paint?... blood?... stuff crosses out Satine's eyes and cuts her throat. Is Maul reveling in his murder of her, trying to relive it by destroying her image? Did he stub out her eyes to stop her from "staring" at him? Who knows.)
Okay I lied, Ezra flinches precisely once, right after Maul yells at him not to touch the darksaber.
I like to think it was possibly calling out to him, the kyber crystal inside a natural siren song to Force wielders, and that's how Ezra knows it's some kind of lightsaber and not just a weird stick.
Love the drums in this music cue. It's got some exotic-sounding eastern instruments in it too, I think I might hear a bit of didgeridoo?
Subtle animation appreciation moment: How Ezra screws up his face in preparation to down the potion, it obviously doesn't smell or taste very good lol.
The music turns frantic and rushing when we cut the Sabine and Kanan landing out, like it's telling them to hurry. More exotic instruments, some kind of tinny percussion, cymbals maybe?
Right, so this episode was clearly another Halloween special right? Has all the perfect trappings of one lol.
Maul strays into Dangerously Genre Savvy here; he never intended to pay for using the Nightsisters' magick himself and his dialogue to Ezra seems to indicate he didn't intend to sacrifice Ezra to them either. So his plan was either to evade the spirit witches long enough to get away scott free, or he was counting on other members of the Spectres to come after Ezra trying to save him.
Either way, it leads to one of the creepiest scenes in the show.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The bewildered way Kanan's head jerks around right before the Nightsister spirit possesses him, like he can tell that something freaky is there but he can't tell what or where.
Tumblr media
The unnatural character movement the animators use for Possessed!Kanan and Possessed!Sabine is really good; they're limp like puppets for a bit before the spirits take full control, and even afterwards move in jerky, inhuman motions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And thus a half-dozens angst!fics were written lol. (And still not nearly enough.)
Ngl, Maul technically does show Ezra how to save his friends buuuuut he gets no points for that since he clearly thought Ezra would just write them off and come with him.
I'm still amazed he didn't just kidnap him right there. Kenobi obsession too strong I guess.
Other people have already pointed out the irony of Maul screaming at Ezra to forget the past and his attachments while himself being obsessed with the past and clearly trying to use Ezra as a Replacement Goldfish for Savage but I'll mention that anyway.
You know, the Fridge Horror of this episode is really unsettling. I know at least one fanficcer and @better-call-mau1 have asked the question of how, exactly, does possessing Kanan and Sabine allow the Nightsisters to rebuild their clan? They're either going to use Kanan and Sabine to perform some kind of freaky necromancy ritual, use them to lure other Rebels in (seems like it'd have limited effectiveness, eventually Rebel Command would decide retrieval isn't worth it), or they would rebuild the clan using more... ah... conventional means.
Add that unsettling thought to how possessed Sabine seems to stalk Ezra, specifically, while the possessed Kanan returns to the altar and fkhkhffjhjhgggfgjjjj--
Yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"That doesn't belong to you!" "Then take it from me, Jedi!" Are they talking about the darksaber or Sabine's body?
...Yes.
This music cue is amazing. Possessed Sabine scrabbling on the ground like a feral animal while Ezra just calmly Force Pushes her out of the threshold is excellently staged.
Tumblr media
Well that's a heart eyes expression if I ever saw one lol.
Sometimes I like to listen to different language tracks for specific dramatic parts of shows or movies, to see how other actors do it, compare performance notes and kjsahfkajshfkajh one of the Chinese Nightsister-possessed Kanans was one of the most horrifying scary things I've ever heard.
This scene is just heartwrenching. A lot of this episode was spoiled in the trailers so this maybe didn't have as much dramatic impact as it should have had at the time but I still found it pretty gut-punching. A little short, maybe. That's about it.
Tumblr media
This is one of Ezra's finer moments, frankly, outsmarting and defeating the Nightsister spirits. You really feel the care he has for Kanan. Love it. <3
From the moment Ezra said that the answer to destroying the Sith was "Obi-Wan Kenobi" I think I knew it was a false flag and what Maul had manipulated him to see. Because, obviously, they key is Luke.
Interesting how Ezra thinks if Obi-Wan doesn't, eventually, fight, that the Sith can't be stopped. He's pinning a lot of hopes on a man who doesn't, ultimately, wind up being the narrative Chosen One who accomplishes that task. Again, more on that later in "Twin Suns".
Tumblr media
Ezra seems to pay Sabine a glance as he passes, aww.
Tumblr media
*PORTENTS OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT*
This episode is one of my favorites, and the "Haunted" mental connections are only one of the reasons why. It's got great dialogue, creepy suspense, adorable subtle Sabezra moments, furthering of Maul's slow mental degradation and descent into full ruin, and Ezra gets to be amazingly self-sacrificing, brave, and awesome in it. What's not to love?

“The Old Guard” Daemon AU: Quynh and the king cobra
Since we don’t separate couples in this house, after Andy here comes Quynh. She’s just as badass as her axe-wielding wife, so she has a similarly Iconique daemon
the king cobra is the longest venomous snake in the world; adults range between 3,75 and 5 m, and weigh up to 10 kg, and males are bigger than females. Quynh is terrifying (affectionate), so her having a Big Murder Noodle as daemon is on par with her
Tumblr media
king cobras are apex predators, snakes that eat other snakes; their only natural predators are humans. Quynh, like Andy, is a force of nature, so she deserves to stay on top of the food chain
Tumblr media
like most venomous snakes, king cobras kill their prey by biting them, injecting a high dose of venom, and then eat it. Quynh, that Joe described as a pit viper in a fight, seems to be a “one strike and you’re dead” type of warrior, especially being an archer
on that same note, a group of king cobras is called a quiver, and a quiver is also the pouch where archers keep their arrows. So. Sounds like destiny
king cobras are diurnal, so they possess a good eyesight, together with a strong sense of smell; they also spend a lot of time on tree branches, from which they lean down to hunt – sniper Quynh my beloved
Tumblr media
while they usually prefer avoidance to confrontation, king cobras tend to take an aggressive stance when disturbed – raising up to the chest, opening the hood, and hissing. Since they’re also much larger than many snakes, they can also attack from a certain distance if bothered. I think Quynh has the spirit of an observant (she was the sniper before Nicky and I will die on this hill), and she doesn’t start fights if she doesn’t need to; but she won’t take any bullshit from anyone, and those that test her don’t live long enough to regret it
king cobras are long-lived snakes (20 years on average) and although they’re solitary during the year, they tend to stay with the same partner for the mating season, and it’s the only snake species that actively builds a nest for its eggs, which the female guards ferociously. 🎶 ~ Found Family Vibes Babe ~ 🎶
a king cobra’s scales are usually a mix of green, brown, black and yellow, with the yellow scales forming very slight stripes on the top portion of the body. It’s not the flashiest coloring among snakes, but it’s surely elegant, and Quynh is obviously a fashion icon, and her daemon’s coloring goes with all her outfits – what do they say, black goes with everything?
Tumblr media
The habitat of the king cobra spans from southern India to most of Southeast Asia, from lowlands up to an elevation of 2000 m. They live in forests, swamps, bamboo thickets, grasslands, and rivers – they are good swimmers. Coincidentally, Vietnam has declared the king cobra a protected species (go Vietnam!); so it’s an animal that Quynh would have been familiar with
Tumblr media
according to the Netflix featurette video, Andy found Quynh around 1000 BCE – take away the century that it took her to actually find Quynh, and assuming that Andy started looking for her as soon as the dreams started (which I think she would have, desperate for company as she was), we could place Quynh’s death around 1100 BCE – give or take the thirty/forty years Quynh actually lived
I am assuming that Quynh lived in the Red River delta area in northern Vietnam; this date would place her at the tail end of the Dong Dau archaeological period of the Hong Bang dynasty (the predecessor of the Dong Son culture), and she would have been a Lac Viet
the Lac Viet were an agricultural society with a sort of feudal system, where inheritance was passed through both the paternal and maternal line; also, when someone got married, they became a member of the wife’s family instead of the husband’s
in most Asian cultures snakes have a neutral or positive depiction, from symbols of rebirth (due to their periodical shedding of the skin) and immortality (think of the ourobouros), to fertility (humans will see an elongated anything with a differentiated head and go ‘is this a phallic reference?’) to guardians of temples or divine figures (especially cobras, for their defensive positions); the Vietnamese dragon itself is a combination of various animals, including the snake
one of the legends about the origin of the Vietnamese people is that of Lac Long Quan, legendary founder of the Hung dynasty, whose mother was a dragon goddess, and Au Co, an immortal fairy of the mountains who could turn into a bird. She bore him 100 children, and when they separated (he to the seas, she to the mountains) the children also split between their parents
in Vietnam’s folk religion, the snake, as an amphibious animal, is meant to possess the linh, the “spirit”, a power of mediation between âm (yin, the disorder) and duong (yang, the order). It lives on the threshold of water and land, and thus is associated with divine figures with luminal powers between order and disorder, especially goddesses
the neighbouring Cambodians also believe to be descended from nagas, the snake gods also present in Hindu and Buddhist mythology
this would mean that Quynh having a snake daemon, in her original culture, would have been considered positively, even reverently – and in her travels through Asia, said snake being a cobra probably was looked at even more benevolently
(imagine how pissed off she must have been that the onset of Christianity would make people recoil away from her and her daemon)
After. A painful search. I have settled for Thang for the daemon’s name. It means “victory” (or “victorious”, depending on the sources), and it feels like a good thing to name a person’s daemon, especially if we assume that Quynh had a warrior training in her first life too
(there is One (1) Thing I know of him. He has a Deep Sexy Voice, like. Imagine James Earl Jones. That’s how I can imagine him speaking. A soothing deep bass that makes you feel instantly at ease – haters will say it’s manipulative. Quynh regularly goes “if Thang was a tiger you wouldn’t say that, you cowards”)
Fun fact: in almost all legends and mythologies snakes and eagles (or snake-like and eagle-like entities) are mortal enemies since, you know, snakes represent the chthonic world and eagles represent the skies. And yet Andy and Quynh looked at each other and went ‘fuck it, that’s my wife now’ and that’s Very Sexy of them
(I can see Diokles sleeping on the closest tree branch above Andy and Quynh with Thang gently coiled around him so he can also Keep Warm)

Goddammit svtfoe
I have a lot to talk about with this show hoooly hell skdhkfjfkd first of all, I L O V E it. I know its criticized (rightfully) for its ending and season 3 and 4, but I really did enjoy it start to finish! Especially season 1-2, I loved the general cutesy chaotic vibe, I loved each of the characters, Marco was and is my favorite character aauajfjgjjg the plot with Toffee and the potential lore, everything just clicked with me! I'll admit I started shying away around season 3 but still, the whole thing with Eclipsa was amazing, I'm lomv her, and Princess Turdina omg shekjfjfne Tom was also a joy, I swear he's amazing his growth and characterization was just on point and aaaaaaa there's so much to talk about (the best scene was definitely the scene Tom fucking saved Marco from Meteora omg I could not ahkdjfkdjw I was crying from laughter)
I think the biggest problem I had was the entire shipping thing lmao I supported like all of the ships but they kept ripping these people apart and I was screaming the entire time like please as a Jarco and Kellco shipper my he a r t p l e a s e
I knew Starco was endgame but it wouldve been so much better (for both shipping wise and the plot) to just have them be best friends and lose feelings for each other after the blood moon is broken? In my opinion, at least, since Marco's confession in the realm of magic really doesn't do anything for the plot and there wasnt much build up, same with Star and Marco getting together in the barn (which was extremely awkward shdkfjks I hated it)
There was so much unexplained in the show too, like Marco's cheek marks, how the hell he was able to cast the all seeing eye the first time without any complications, the entire Monster Arm debacle (they couldve expanded on thatttt), why there were so many signs of evil marco or whatever, like??? I mean after speculating I guess the blood moon couldve helped with the all seeing eye or whatever but then the cheek marks glow red in the realm of magic after the blood moon curse is broken like goddamn
Side note, TOFFEE??? They just yeetus deletused him, and I kept thinking he was gonna come back, like!! It took me an entire season and a half to realize Toffee was actually dead, and that's not a good thing! It was so anticlimactic ugh what if the ending was like Mina getting her hands on the wand but Toffee's actually not gone and he uses her to his advantage to destroy magic or whatever the fuck and go from there? I wouldve been down, Toffee deserved better, AND SO DID LUDO HE LITERALLY GOT SHOVED ASIDE EXCEPT FOR A FEW EPISODES WITH DENNIS (WHO IS THE BEST LIL BRO BTW) AAUGHJS THAT MAKES ME VERY FRUSTRATED
Side SIDE note: WHAT HAPPENED WITH KELLY???? She has a couple episodes dedicated to her but?? She breaks up with her break up buddy OFF SCREEN??? W H Y
She deserved better oh my lord she was amazing and I loved her and Kellco is so cute and has substance and god their dynamic is so fun ughhhH
I'm slightly grateful that they left it so vague and open ended because I love speculating and coming up with new AUs or theories and messing around with the ideas but augh I wouldve appreciated some kind of explanation??????
All in all, I really liked svtfoe except for the extremely glaring flaws it had! I enjoyed all of the fights, I thought some were pretty creative and most of the episodes were a lot of fun (either in concept or execution lol)! Maybe if there wasnt so much shipping the plot wouldnt have broken down but whatever lol (watch me get smited for this entire review whkdjfkwjdkf I'm waiting for my death)
Anyways about the actual drawing (sorry bout that long ass post oop) I really liked Marco and the idea of him, an inherently nonmagical dude, using magic! Especially the darkest spell (or just Eclipsa's chapter in general), and Marco with blackened arms would be kinda fun! I wish the show expanded on the blackened arms instead of just having them like a brand— I'd be down to have some marks on my arms to kill a freaking immortal lmao
So yeah, Marco with the darkest spell (or the dimensional thing I came up with a couple days ago which I might make a post on discussing it to throw the idea out at some point?? Who knows) would be kinda fun, have him kill god and be proud
So yeah thanks for coming to my Ted talk <3

Sarcastic StarBharat Reviews-Episode 9: Enter the big bad
The episode begins with an elephant. Okay, I can see that this episode is going to have a lot of canon fails already. The camera focuses on long-haired Dhritrashtra. I don’t like this actor. The soldier controlling the elephant either loses control of it or lets it loose, it looks the same to me. Camera focuses on Ambika and Ambalika. There’s this elaborate match between Dhritrashtra and the elephants, in which he catapults up one elephant all Amarendra Baahubali style, though I vastly preferred Baahubali doing it. The elephant trumpets. Everyone cheers. Ambika and Ambalika smile. He leaps to the ground and takes on another elephant, which butts him with its trunk to the ground. Everyone is worried all of a sudden. Dhritrashtra dodges it, then drags it by its leg chains. There’s two more that surround him. He executes a Tarzan leap and falls. Soldiers come to his aid. He raises his hand, standing. There is focus on his bleeding wounds. Grunting, he vaults between their legs, dragging all four of the elephants by their chains. He succeeds in tying them up, but one elephant breaks free of the chain while he’s exulting. He narrows his eyes, trying to locate the elephant, but someone else drags the elephant by a chain off him. Dhritrashtra angrily exclaims “Who dares to try and help me without permission?” I really dislike this characterization of Dhritrashtra. This angry young man vibe, instead of the two-faced manipulative man he is in canon. Guess who it is? “It’s me, elder brother,” Uh-oh. “Pandu.” Just entered and this guy is already sickly sweet. He’s smiling. “I do not need your help! I am not afraid of anything!” Pandu’s smile has dropped off his face. “Why do always remind me of my blindness?” Scene change. Krishna Gyaan. This one’s about disability. Skip. Skip. Scene focuses on Dhritrashtra getting…a head massage? There’s a slight sound of footsteps and the camera focuses on Pandu entering. Dhritrashtra blinks. (In case anyone’s wondering why this series of posts took an unexplained hiatus, the explanation is the characterization of Dhritrashtra.) Dhritrashtra blinks. “Pandu, so you are here to help your elder brother? So that not even for one second is my blindness forgotten?” Bro, you’re the one mentioning your blindness again and again. It’s no one else. It’s you who’s reminding everyone of it over and over. You know what? I take back what I said about Pandu being sickly sweet. He’s just trying his best to be a brother. I can understand trying to protect an undeserving elder brother, for in my mind, that’s what Arjun did all his life, after the Dyut Sabha, at least. “A King is served, not helped, brother,” “I am not a King yet.” “But you have the right to the throne” Such innocence is not a good idea, Pandu, especially with an uber-suspicious brother like yours. “The King is for the throne, not the throne for the King” Ah, it’s Vidur, to the tune of dhananana. “Pranipaat, Jyeshth Bhraata,” “Who sits on the throne is decided by his worth.” Angry dude has had enough. He throws up a hand and jolts from his massage. Pandu and Vidur look at each other. “I am the eldest of the clan!” Cue self-promotion bragging session. “Will YOU decide my worth?” “Not I, elder brother. That right is the Mahamantri’s. At the correct time, he will decide. I was only telling brother Pandu that words before their time are useless.” Ah, so someone has his head screwed straight, thankfully. Vidur leaves after his salutations. Scene cuts to Dhritrashtra practicing knives, narrowly missing Pandu. “That’s why he’s jealous of us! Because we’re the children of King Vichitraveerya’s legitimate Queens, and he’s just a dasi-putr!” Ugh. Dude. All three of you are Ved Vyas’s kids, remember? Pandu reminds Dhritrashtra of that, further pointing out that both Bhishm and Satyavati accept Vidur as family, that Bhishm likes his habit of being truthful without artifice. “That’s not a virtue, it’s a vice!” Ack. Seriously, Mr. Angry Young man, do you even like anything that’s good…? “When you speak with the intent to insult, it is not the truth, but insult!” Hey. He just said you need to prove your worth, in what world is that an insult? “But only dishonest people get insulted by truth!” Good, Pandu. Then he goes into pandering mode. “But you’re honest, why would you be insulted? You should always be happy, because a sad heart cannot understand justice, which is the duty of a King.” “Happy? I’ll be happy after I am King, Pandu.” He goes off into a sob story, one I am supremely not interested in. He’s like Shantanu, it seems. Dude can’t ever be happy. He can hear cheering in his head. Pandu nods. He then starts applying haldi on his brother. Then comes the eternal Indian solution to loneliness, this time from Pandu’s mouth. “You need a wife.” “I do not have the time to think of marriage.” “You don’t need to, Tathshree and the Rajmata alone need to do that. You will be wed to the Princess of Gandhar.” He goes on talk about Gandhari, and how Dhritrashtra is lucky. “Gandhari is lucky to have me.” Ack. Entitled much, this guy? Cut to Gandhari, smiling really cutely. Cut again to her parents. The Queen is asking the King if he’s worried about the decision he took. She says that she was really angry at first, but now she thinks he took the right decision. He says he’s feeling guilty. “A king has decided, but the father still cannot accept it.” “A father is bound by love, Maharaj. Love makes us weak” I disagree. I think love gives us strength, but Krishna doesn’t think so, and that’s it. “See, Sudharma, look at our daughter playing in the garden” Cut to Gandhari and Sukhdha making rangolis in the garden. Gandhari is still happy. “She doesn’t even know that her dreams are going to shatter…” Excuse me? She was all excited about Dhritrashtra! She was! What is the shattering going on here? “She is a Princess, Maharaj. She has a duty to her people, she will sacrifice with a smile for them.” Cut to Gandhari smiling. Ah, these guys seriously love their melodrama. “With what face will I tell my daughter that for the happiness of the people I have condemned her to a lifetime of sadness?” “Not now, Maharaj. She still has dreams in her eyes…” aargh. This is too much. SHE HAD BEEN EXCITED ABOUT DHRITRASHTRA? THESE GUYS CAN’T KEEP THEIR OWN BLOODY STORY STRAIGHT, guess how they’re gonna mutilate canon? “What will happen when Shakuni returns, Maharani? He loves his sister a lot. He will not agree to her wedding a blind man.” Notwithstanding the fact that this entire episode is non-canon, Shakuni was actually supposed to be HAPPY about it in canon. Camera cuts to Shakuni scaling a mountain. “Climb fast, my Prince, the rope is wearing out!” Someone is groaning behind Shakuni. “This rope will break! It cannot bear the weight of two men!” Cue the most irritating laugh I’ve ever heard. Clearly, it’s Shakuni, the big bad of the story. Here, anyway. In canon, he mellows down with age, kind of, and Karna picks up the slack of the baddie sidekick. “Then I will leave the rope, you will live.” “No, my Prince, your life is more precious than mine.” “Then leave the rope.” “No, no, no” “Leave it.” Shakuni kicks the man down. Episode ends. Precap: “I am not afraid of Bhishm” says Shakuni. “Where strength is of no use, there comes the use of trickery, Pitashree, I will war against Hastinapur in such a clever way that the entire Kingdom will break into pieces. I will not obey the Dharma that causes pain to my sister. For Gandhari, if I have to do the worst of Adharma, then I am ready to do it.”

Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO / MAYBE ?
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL.
How strictly do you follow canon?  — lol. I take inspiration from canon, let’s put it that way.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  Your local patron saint of lost causes, a heroic entity who has overcome betrayal and judgement to become an existence that can save the world. Also she’s tall and strong and hot and nice, what more could you want? Huh? You want more than being hugged by a 6′4″ lady??? Sona can also be in various countries, and can participate very easily in fluff, angst, and all sorts of other types of threads.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  Lots of angst and drama, a bit of a loner with a distant vibe. Having no etwahl and not playing music kills the interest and ‘usual interactions’ for a lot of people, and being mute & not jumping to telepathy can make threads dry and slow. Being a ‘sexy boob lady’ ( u g h ) also has painted her in a certain light - I’ll never forget that someone said that ‘ofc everyone ships with Sona, she’s the village bicycle.’ I’ve made her exceptionally strong ( almost overpowered ), and that doesn’t jive with people sometimes - shoving in all these themes that I personally like and crafting an interesting story of a divine / demonic seer witch who doesn’t know what to do with herself, is finally ‘too strong’, and finds power distasteful... The themes can be a little depressing and cold, even when she acts nice. And seeing “Even though she feels nothing, she still acts nice” in character can feel... tiring. A mute is not an easy person to write with, and I don’t shy away from trying to give the impression that ‘waiting for Sona to communicate can be tiring’ - because I want my readers and mutuals to feel the kinds of things she goes through everyday. While I try to make the blog accessible, Sona has a speech disability, and that can be tiring.
Also that she doesn’t act like a fancy noble... I don’t know. I feel like the way that I write her is very, very different to the fandom’s impression of her, and that leaves people disillusioned. “This isn’t what I expected or signed up for.” She’s just not that person... And because she doesn’t speak, a lot of prompts are off limits. I’ve also recently reset because I wanted to emphasize that she is patient, grim, and secretive while still being kind. I’ve toned down her tendency for mischief a lot, she used to be an absolute gremlin.
A lot of these things also apply to my other Sona blog ( @virtuous-dignity ), where she is extremely structured and self-confident and a bit of a recluse, so while she’s much much nicer, she’s also a complete hardass. It’s rough stuff, especially since I make sure to point out, “hey this Sona practices music over 8 hours every day.” “Hey this Sona finds it morally wrong to play music for small audiences.” There are certain traits that just cut ideas in the bud.
What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  I played Sona a lot in bot lane. Multiple years of sexist remarks, shitty writing, and bad characterization made me frustrated. A lot of things were left unexplained and the etwahl felt like too much of a focus that I could not answer, “who is Sona besides a musician with a fancy instrument”. She has to be someone, right? But we never get to that in the story ( nor in the apparent upcoming lore rework either... ). She has to be someone, her being a famous musician is not everything. So I forcibly tossed aside the music part, especially to also prevent accidentally being pulled into ‘your music is so pretty’ plots. Plus: I wanted to write a character with an internal conflict who was going through some things but wanted to be nice anyway - I believe in that idea a lot. And I wanted to write a character that, tbh, could ship and flirt and just... be flirty and easy going more ( hah! didn’t work out so great now! ). My first canon characters were a ‘left by the void Malz’ dealing with his sins and Ori, who I talk about below, and neither were really great for getting that flirty vibe out. I also really wanted to emphasize that... Well, to be blunt, that if I wrote Sona as sexually promiscuous, that wasn’t a bad thing. That ‘being sexy’ and ‘sex positive’ did not equal ‘objectified tiddy witch’ and ‘perfect candidate for oppai mouse pad’ and other things I’ve heard directed at me in my league experience. Many, many things. Ugh. It kind of did end up turning into a thing where Sona herself draws an interesting line between ‘haha I can tell everyone’s looking at me with those eyes and it’s the fucking worst’ and ‘ok but I trust you and am in bed with you, so I want you to grab me’ - but that’s getting more into ns/fw topics so I’ll leave it there.
What keeps your inspiration going?  —  All my characters tend to be expressions of myself, as well as answering important thematic questions, like “What does it mean to be rejected by your home and no longer have a place”, and some other stuff. I usually go back to that. Plus, exploring concepts around abandonment and loneliness is something I do a lot with her - feelings of neglect and disillusionment, and ideas surrounding “do I need to like someone or be liked by someone to treat them with dignity”. ( virtuous-dignity, on the other hand, was created because I wanted to write something as soft and uwu as possible, and then it turned into something about ‘balancing dignity for oneself with duty to others’ and handling those kinds of conflicts. )
I also really do enjoy, on some level, turning people around on these characters. “You made me care about character x” is such high praise.

Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO / MAYBE ?

How strictly do you follow canon?  — hahahahahahaha. hah. hah. Sorry. Everything I write is divergent by default.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  A genius inventor and cute spherical robot duo who speak to other robots and shoot lightning, run around acting cute, and try to save their city one step at a time - all while dealing with deep existential dread and fighting off a fate that decrees Ori’s death. Between ‘pancake bot’ and Ori being an accidental flirt, there’s plenty of variety and development here as my oldest canon muse. Not to mention that the blog ‘grows’ and ‘changes’, and in the last year, Ori has taken to dying her hair pink ( because Vi is cool is why, just don’t let her near a rifle or she’ll try to imitate Cait ). I also regularly think about / draw different hairstyles and clothing styles. Ori is very much ‘alive’, the most so out of the three muses on this blog. A human that has the memories of being a robot, trying to live on and live a good life. Also, there are bird, angel, and time themes. So many clocks. Mega clocks!
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  Deep angst and existential dread, because she knows her fate is to die and she’s cheated time. Themes of dysphoria and other troubling topics abound. Being stuck in time loops, thinking she’s an aberration, needing crutches because her legs stop working, etc.
Also, removing the fact that she is a robotic automaton is a bunch of the appeal of Ori. Or well, it’s what makes her character ‘interesting and unique’ to many. Without that, she is ‘yet another Zaunite’, as the thing that made her most interesting was her death and rebirth. ( Nevermind that her entire story is that she’s a selfless person but- I’m supposed  to act like she’s bad, right? )
What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  Hey remember when institute of war was a thing? And then when it wasn’t? And Ori’s lore was “died to a turret shot trying to be a champion”... and then it was up in the air for two years?
That’s why. If no one else will love her, I will. She deserves better. And then the lore became close to my lore so I rewrote everything a second time trying to stick to the themes I had.
Ori’s thematic question is, “What do you do when you don’t recognize yourself anymore? How do you get back to ‘okay’ and what do you do from there?” It’s a pretty dim question that has a lot to do with body image, but also to do with abandonment and neglect, and  just dropping out of people’s lives. I think that’s something that people can really relate to. I originally wrote her on a multi with a ‘post void Malz’, who was dealing with the trauma of being puppeted around for years and all the things he had done, trying to get back to ‘okay’ without getting killed. More below:
What keeps your inspiration going?  —  Themes as noted above, Ori is super cute, and a lot of my art & general ideas. I’ve kind of turned these three characters in borderline OCs and keep developing them as they grow... Sometimes I think the stories and concepts I’ve written have outgrown the fandom. And thinking about her, and how she would live, and what her story is... mmm.
Also, the themes I write... I think they matter. Maybe it’s not obvious to anyone but myself, but writing a character who feels dysphoria and hates their body for ‘betraying them’... is relatable. It’s not nice. It’s not simple. But it’s relatable and it matters. Ori’s theme on this blog has a lot to do with “fighting a fate that says you’re going to lose and defying expectations” as well as “coming back from something wicked and rotten in your psyche/body”. And I do write some other skin verses for her but they’re all adapted to meet that theme. ( For example, in SG, she rises to guardian after finding out she’s fated to become a dark star and fights that fight alone, because ‘hell no she’s not going to go dark’. This was 5+ years ago back when there were theories SG and DS were same universe. )
Mostly it’s writing about these themes of expectation and reality. Overprotective parent, absentee parent, dealing with trauma... All my writing is like that. It can make my characters seem overly tragic, yes, but these ideas are not so far gone that they’re completely irrelevant and beyond belief. I’m sure many people have experienced emotional exhaustion and problems with body image. Even though I do write ‘polite but ready to fight’ characters only... Well, I believe in exploring and expressing these kinds of problems. Inner conflict and all. But also fluff! Fluff is really nice! Talk to her about pancake robot.
I also really do enjoy, on some level, turning people around on these characters. “You made me care about character x” is such high praise.

Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO. ( post rework??? oh my god )
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. ( hard to consider ‘martial’ characters strong when Xer/ath and Syn/dra exist )
Are they underrated?  YES / NO. ( she’s a little overrated, isn’t she?  )
Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO / MAYBE ?
Were they relevant for the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG.
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO / MAYBE ?
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL.
How strictly do you follow canon?  — I still draw from old lore with her big four blades of doom and ‘reviving’ with the help of Raka ( though I leave it vague / easy to gloss over ). I also had a lot of ideas about music and rhythm and tradition before the update ( drums were a big thing for her, so strong percussive beats and motions reign over the more silk and ribbon dances that flow more, drawing on things like Zelos existing, Lito’s lessons & harsh behavior, and her own internalized habits of trying to calm herself ), so I draw on those a ton. For me, the progression is ‘classic’ -> ‘infiltrator / nightblade ‘ -> ‘aviator’ all as one timeline. Also wrote her as being ‘missing in action’, which makes the awaken cinematic weird. I also really try to emphasize that she’s an emotionally stunted wardog with scars and not ultra pretty, so.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  A world traveler and a wardog, you can find her anywhere, any time, ready to kick some butt and enjoy the local food. Her simmering fury is a counterpoint to her relatively muted demeanor and adventurous spirit. However you may find her, there’s a definite charm to being flown up above the clouds to watch a sunset and talk. She will fly you where you need to be.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  I’m a little stuck on old lore and writing Lia as a character that has “left behind” her past and is pretending to be dead does make certain interactions tough. She’s also a deeply stunted character, emotionally, and I write her ten years of experience as having chilled her to a cold, ever burning ember rather than a passionate flame. Also, ‘aviator’ is kind of weird to handle for a lot of people.
What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  This one is really simple. When this blog started, the only splash where Irelia was smiling was the aviator splash. That’s it. That as the whole reason. “I want her to be happy and have found her happiness.”
What keeps your inspiration going?  —  I will admit that Lia is the character that I give the least attention to out of these three, and part of it is because I don’t really do flirting or shipping with her as much. She’s not one to reach out to others, and there are a lot of popular Lia blogs to the point that when I, as a multi, write with someone... She probably isn’t the first pick.
But I just... want her to be happy. That’s it. As I mentioned with the Ori section, what I’ve worked out for her has kind of outgrown the fandom itself, she’s become a different entity. Her themes largely involve recovery and finding oneself anew, and writing a character that is passionate about others while still being cool-headed is some of the variety I need. Because Lia is ace/homosexual, she sits out on a lot of the flirty content, but the chances I get to write her being romantic and caring... my god. Just a few posts back and forth with @unholyshe ‘s Akali and a So/na I used to write with....... Unforgettable. ( On that note go follow @unholyshe what a good writer, gosh dang. ) It’s these small interactions I find intensely compelling, and having a ‘quiet intensity’ and really thinking about her body language...
Also it’s nice to write a character with little secret agenda, who is just straightforward. “Will I enjoy kissing you? Only one way to find out. ‘It was okay.’ “ A ‘the only way forward is through, just do it’ attitude is refreshing.
------------------
Learning to write all three characters helps me write the others: The little things I think about that are specific to each person really help me out for the others. The depth of using body language from Sona bleeds into how Lia uses body language, and how Ori doesn’t ( even common ticks ), etc etc. Ori’s blunt, observational style of speaking ( telling you that you look good like it’s an observational fact ) helps me understand how to be straightforward with Lia.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES …? / NO. ( sometimes I do get very anxious abt it, esp. since I’m so divergent and do things like ‘so/na is one part succubus lol’ )
Do you frequently write headcanons? YES / NO. ( do excerpts count? less headcanons and more musings, since I’m on like 5+ years with 2/3 of these. )
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO. ( time is not a thing but I used to write a ton, my drabble energy goes to novels now )
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day?  YES / NO. ( this is why you see mobile posts from me constantly, and so many excerpts / musings ).
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO. ( It’s what I want but it can also be disillusioning / disappointing to people so. Dunno. Anxiety. =/  )
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO. ( It takes me a bit to warm up to a character again, but yes. I know my writing is not bad but I can be a little insecure about it. )
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO. ( Very. I cry a lot and I get upset pretty easily. Sometimes I end up being really cold instead but idk. )
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  — To a point. Sometimes criticism is irrelevant or meaningless, or is just personal taste. “Sona shouldn’t be that strong” isn’t helpful ( but thinking about ways to pare down the complexity is good! ) Sometimes I get criticism that is the equivalent of tasting a chocolate cake and going, “It should have been vanilla, I like vanilla better.” That’s cool, but that has nothing to do with the taste of the chocolate cake I made. ( Ori as a human isn’t interesting, talk more about Sona & the etwahl even though it’s broken, Lia flying doesn’t make sense, etc - these are foundational flavors, so what can I do? ).
Also sometimes people make comments that make me feel they’re just being petty / catty and not sincere. I’ve seen quite a few hypocritical comments and it’s hard to take them seriously. So, yes, but ‘to a point’... Mostly I take suggestions, which I then talk about for the muse. Exploring those ideas. Unsolicited criticism is... hmm. In my experience, about half of it isn’t constructive. And from the wrong person, it can sound judgemental.
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  — Of course? I love asks. Always. Great. Awesome. If I have a chance to draw to answer these asks, even better.
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  Not really. I’m divergent, they probably disagree because they have a different vision for the character. I’ll be honest here and say I’ve had enough people tell me that “my portrayals are not what they expected” that this can be... disheartening. I usually have a good reason for 80% of my hcs. If we’re talking in IMs though or just conversing, I’m totally fine with it. This comes back to unsolicited criticism - to be a little blunt, some people just straight up don’t know what they’re talking about. And given that I put a bunch of effort in trying to make sure most of my headcanons can be glossed over, so it doesn’t cause conflict and my ‘ultra grim take’ doesn’t cause the end times... I dunno. I’d rather that someone tell me “the kind of interactions they want”, so I can lean into that direction. If you just want fluff, I can leave most of my darker hcs for So/na at the door... But you need to tell me that, so I can work with you.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  — just leave? huh? I mean, I already know people disagree. If you’re not rude, then we’ll just move on and be chill. Otherwise... well, we won’t be chill and you can still go, but I’ll consider you a dick. I don’t expect everyone to agree with “Ori is a human”, but why bring that up to me?
This is why a lot of the time, when people talk about characters and my muses, my brain defaults to “Well that has nothing to do with me.” Why should I invest any time being upset that people are disappointed with my portrayal or I’m not what they expected. It’s exhausting. People have some really strong opinions about Lia and Sona sometimes, but... ‘that has nothing to do with me.’ There’s no point in trying to convince someone to try your flavor of ice cream when they’ve already decided what flavor and toppings they want. It just leads to tremendous insecurity. I should not have to argue that ‘my portrayal is worth paying attention to’.
Ugh. I might be too sensitive about this. There was a point where people really got in the habit of saying, “this is how character x is” ( not their muse ), and it felt like someone trying to enter my kitchen. It did not feel like a suggestion or an idea. It was an assertive, “this is how Irelia is” by, say... a Ry/ze or Ken/nen blog or something. That felt extremely isolating and alienating to me, because it felt like I could not participate in that conversation at all. Or stuff after. I had to sideline myself, because... that has nothing to do with me or my interpretations. Ofc griping at them is wrong because I know they mean, ‘this is how I see it’, but ye. I’m short tempered and easily upset. Working on it.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  — um? bye? hello?
god I used to go “ ok that’s cool you don’t like my portrayal, here are some other great So/na blogs that I love” but I realized that I was directing someone who felt the need to tell me my portrayal or character is bad to those people... and no. no no no. I still feel a little guilty about it, because thinking I directed a toxic person to my duplicates...  yuck.
If you don’t like the characters, or you don’t like my divergent takes, that’s fine. I get it’s not for everyone. Just unfollow me. You’re not paying me. You’re not under any obligation. To an extent, i don’t mind being critical of the character, but there’s a difference between being critical and being hateful to someone’s muse? And it depends a lot on how close I am with a person. For example, I think Sy/las is a complete scumbag and I hate him, but I don’t go yelling that to every Sy/las blog I see. C’mon.
Another bit of salt but it’s... kind of a sad topic, really. There are some characters people love to hate, whereas other ones get the ‘protection squad’. And in general it’s really disheartening to see someone shittalk Lux every two weeks, but go ‘these other champs are off limits’. If you have that attitude, it makes me think you’ll shittalk my characters the moment they get popular ( COUGHIRELIACOUGH ) and that’s kind of sad. And mean. So general advice on this is: Probably just don’t tell someone you hate their muse, you know? Idk. Everyone has their own tolerance level too so. meh.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  Somewhat.  Not much to say here, sometimes I am very tired, sometimes I comma splice like a madman, sometimes I overuse hyphen dashes to avoid deciding whether to use a comma, period, or semicolon - like this. I don’t need an editor. English is my first language. But if there’s something egregious or you have tips, let me know? I’m someone who looks up grammar rules regularly, and breaks teh rules just as regularly. Knowing when and how to break grammar rules is useful. Though I do tend to... overuse something once I’ve learned it. Hyphen dash, I’m looking at you.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   — Yes and no. I’m chill, I can be a little overly passionate, and I’m pretty quick to apologize... But I have certain moral standards and if you break those, you’re done. Also I can be a vengeful bastard. I try to give as much benefit of the doubt as I can and many chances, but I’ve noticed that I really... have a sour attitude towards a lot more people than I expect. Sometimes people who are very well liked, just because they said or did something that ticked me off. Luckily, I have the special skill of not being a jerk even if I don’t like you, and overall trying to be nice to most people, so it usually won’t matter.
Ah and I can be a little selective in who I talk to / play favorites a bit. I’m a busy person with an adult life and a stressful job, I only have so much patience. I skip from “tolerating it” to “leaving”, and that can seem like I ghosted, but that’s not always the case. Just better to leave than to pick fights. I have some pretty strict standards and harsh opinions. Short temper. Vengeful. Alas.
Somehow people think I am very nice and baby, so take that for what you will. Pft. I just want people to be happy and feel comfortable and okay. Wrong is wrong, blah blah blah ok I stop now.
That’s about it, congrats for filling out!
( If you managed to read all this, with 3 full muses... Let me know, I want to hug you??? )

Oooh, I got a set of reblog tags on my Steve & Robin post that helped me put my finger on one of the things that bothered me about Joyce/Hopper this season:
#tbh i didnt like how they handled jopper this season like they never really gave me the banter couple vibe??#idk why they went there when they were obviously the couple who comfort and soothe one another
And yessss, I think one of the biggest issues with Joyce/Hopper is that it was a sudden, unexplained change in how they relate to each other. You can totally have pairings for whom bickering, bantering, and snipping at each other is how they relate (and I really like some of them!), and with those kinds of couples, ideally it’s pretty clear that they’re both into it and they really enjoy the butting-heads aspect. But Joyce and Hopper just never really were one of those pairings. There’s some snarking between them, especially early in season one, but usually it goes along with things genuinely not being good with them (her son’s missing/dead, and she’s telling him all these crazy things and he doesn’t believe her!). The first two seasons were about slowing growing trust and learning to work together, but they never really had that vibe of two people who bicker and yell to show affection.
... and then in season three suddenly they are that way, and I think that’s a big part of why it feels so wrong, because it goes against the grain of their established dynamic and characterization. It’s the change that matters most, not even so much what it changed into. I mean, yes, people had issues (I had issues!) with what seems like sudden jealousy and Hopper disrespecting her ideas and calling her crazy. But if that had been part of their dynamic from the beginning, it would’ve been a different thing: “he sticks his foot in his mouth as soon as they meet and then doubles down on it, she thinks he’s a total dick until she gets to know him, their arguing morphs slowly into mutual respect without either of them noticing it’s happening” ... that’s a thing! It’s a totally legit thing and there’s a reason why people are into it. But suddenly introducing it into a couple dynamic that previously hadn’t had it makes it feel really out of place. Being jerks to each other because they meet on the wrong foot and don’t know the other person yet makes sense. Suddenly being jerks to each other after two seasons of working together is just like, what? It’s not the trope.
And it works the other way around too: if you started with a couple whose normal dynamic was bickering and sniping, and then slammed 180 degrees into a new season where they’re being sweet and nice to each other all the time, everyone’s going to be thinking, “What’s wrong with them? Why are they acting like pod people and walking on eggshells around each other? What happened to my faves and why have they been replaced with these placid dolls?” We’re going to want to explain it somehow: did something go wrong? We understand new character behavior based on what they’ve done before; we want to know how they got here, and if they suddenly get more or less contentious, we’re going to want to know why! Characters who suddenly start arguing is a very different thing than characters who have argued from the beginning.
And people are attracted to certain character relationships because we like that kind of pairing, so suddenly switching it up into a different kind of pairing is going to be jarring and offputting for people who were drawn to it for the original dynamic.
On an out-of-universe level, the explanation is probably just that the show riffs on various period tropes and they wanted to do “bickering couple” a la Romancing the Stone, but I think it hadn’t quite hit me before that the reason why it feels so wrong is because it doesn’t make sense with Joyce and Hopper’s previous characterization; the characters are being made to fit the trope rather than the other way around.

Beer Bad (BTVS 4.05)
This is part of my ongoing Buffyverse Project, where I write notes/meta for every episode in an attempt to better understand the characters and themes of the shows. You can find the BTVS list here and the ATS list here. Gifs are not mine.
Tumblr media
One of the most infamous episodes in Buffy history! And not in a good way. I’m still not sure it beats Inca Mummy Girl as my least favorite episode thus far, but at the very least it’s number two. Honestly what is going on here. The title is cringe worthy, the metaphor is preachy, and the characterization is off. So yeah, not a fan of Beer Bad other than the cuteness of cave!Buffy.
Let’s start with the focus and overall point of the episode, which is Buffy’s attempts to get over Parker. Is it just me or does it seem like she’s gone backwards here? Buffy has clearly been upset, but she seemed to have moved on to the “disappointment over guys in general” phase. Now she’s back to wishing Parker would like her back? Moreover, I thought the entire point of this Parker thing was that it wasn’t really about him. It was about a failed attempt to move on from Angel and find a normal relationship.
I suppose the metaphor of the episode, as explained by Maggie Walsh, is how our id causes us to seek pleasure and we lose civility if we let it take over. We go from bad boyfriends to this? Okay, I’ll stop complaining now.
Xander: Work with me here. I'm finally an essential part of your collegey life. No more "looking down on the townie" - I'm the new bartender at the pub. Got my lighter, my rag, my empathy face…
Xander is now a bartender. I’m not sure why he thought this would get him in with the college kids. Haven’t you heard Piano Man, Xander? The bartender’s more depressed than the ones drinking. I’ll give him this, though--he’s definitely the friendly guy you find yourself telling all your problems to. Unfortunately some jerks get all elitist and mock him. People like Colm and his buddies are definitely a part of the college experience (the guys that aren’t smart but think saying a bunch of fancy words will make them seem like they are). There’s also kind of a superior vibe from college goers in general. Many students live in this bubble where they’re free to just attend classes and goof off and they seem to think they’re so smart it’ll last forever. I guess the crash-and-burn is what season six is for.
Willow and Oz are experiencing some weirdness over his (for now, unexplained) attraction to Verruca. He doesn’t notice that Willow’s noticed and he’s been skipping classes lately. The distance between them over his werewolf side was a little sudden to be honest. We got several episodes of Parker but not nearly enough to make a Willow and Oz split seem natural. I get the jump from Wild at Heart to him leaving...it’s the jump from this episode to him sleeping with Verruca that seems odd. Maybe I’m remembering wrong. I’ll let you know in the next episode.
Willow: People like Buffy, and…and me…assume intimacy means friendship, and respect. People shouldn’t have to ask first, “Are you going to be eyeing other prospects tomorrow?”
Parker: And people shouldn’t have to preface casual sex with, “Just so you know, I’ll never grow any older with you. Takes the fire out of it.
I have to agree with Willow and say this guy is unbelievable. Pretending like he’s upfront about wanting casual sex when he tricks girls by acting vulnerable and innocent...the nerve of him, honestly. I love that Willow calls him out. I also think it makes sense that she wouldn’t be as gullible as Buffy. After years of bullying you start to distrust people when they’re too nice.
A MUFFLED CRASH! Xander and the guys look to the bathroom door.
Xander: Somebody didn't have their fiber today.
I laughed way too hard at this.
Giles:You knew it was beer.
Xander: Well excuse me Mr. I-Spent-the-60's-in-an-electric-koolaid-funky-satan-groove.
Giles: Early seventies and you should both know better.
Xander: Hey, I'm not the dad of her.
Maybe it’s because I didn’t do a lot of drinking in college, but this episode just doesn’t open my eyes to the horrors of alcohol.
Buffy’s fantasy at the beginning of the episode comes true as Parker thanks her for saving his life. She just hits him over the head. I guess that’s over.
