hope you don’t mind me using the occasion to revive the rileys for an awkward family dinner

Being brought home to meet Ghost’s family is probably one of the more interesting moments of Soap’s (unbearably long) life.

And not only because he’s never properly dated someone as long as he has Ghost before—it’s also because said family isn’t human, and is more than aware of the fact that he drinks blood to keep himself alive.

So. Interesting is where he stands.

Soap is lured in with a false sense of security from two things—the first being Ghost’s insistence that his mother, brother, and sister-in-law are all nicer than him. The second being the warm smile Mrs. Riley offers him at the front door, entirely friendly and sincere, not like the brandishing of sharp canines that Ghost has flashed Soap with once or twice.

She’s pleasant to talk with, already siding with him when it comes to her son’s tendencies, and she even goes so far as to pour him a glass of pig’s blood she’d purchased just for the occasion. And being that it’s so nice, Soap doesn’t have the heart to tell her that he can only tolerate the stuff at best, especially now that he only ever takes from a specific source these days.

It’s through this lovely conversation with Ghost’s mum and the general sense of domesticity that has Soap believing that he shouldn’t encounter any problems when Beth and Tommy arrive.

But how wrong he was.

Beth at least tries to be polite, though Soap doesn’t miss the distasteful scrunch of her nose once she obviously catches scent of what Ghost so lovingly calls the wrongness of vampirism. Tommy, on the other hand, doesn’t so much as bother trying to hide his disdain.

(Thank God Soap finds out later that it’s mostly just the whole protective older brother act, but still. It hurts Soap’s feelings, just a bit.)

Dinner is absolutely stifling when all but Soap are eating what Ghost’s mum has made, all chatter dying off much too quickly in what little bouts Ghost, of all people, tries to initiate. Soap traces his finger around the rim of his barely-touched glass all while he tries to ignore Tommy’s pointed looks like Soap had done something to personally offend him.

Maybe he had.

“You’re sure about this, Simon?” Tommy eventually, finally asks after nothing but pressing silence. Though the question is asked to Soap’s left, he still feels golden eyes near identical to Ghost’s bearing down on him.

Ghost drops his fork onto his plate, his frustration palpable, emanating in waves. “Do you have to be such a prick, Tom?”

“Boys,” Mrs. Riley scolds from her end of the table. “We have a guest.”

“Yeah, and that guest’s a vampire, Mum,” Tommy spits, throwing out his hand in gesture to Soap. “He eats people.”

“Tom,” Beth hisses.

“Common misconception,” Soap mumbles. He feels all attention shift to him, as if they all remembered he was present—right, super-hearing. He clears his throat, raising his voice, “Only the… bad ones do that.”

“Besides,” Ghost is adding, and Soap is a little fearful of where he plans to take this, “he only feeds off me.”

A tense silence blankets the table. Soap wants to sink into the floor.

“…What?”

“It was my idea,” Ghost attempts to amend, but it’s already much too late. This is already a disaster, beyond disaster, and maybe Soap should’ve stuck to his guns about not meeting a family of werewolves as a vampire.

“Doesn’t matter, Simon!” Tommy exclaims his disbelief.

Ghost rolls his eyes. Soap had not at all imagined this to be where the night would lead. It’s what he desperately wished wouldn’t happen. Because he loves Ghost, and Ghost loves his family—so Soap had felt he needed to be in their good graces.

There goes that idea.

“I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t trust him, Tommy,” Ghost says slowly, challenging. “Is how I feel about him not good enough?”

This finally seems to stun Tommy into some form of submission. Soap doesn't miss Beth reaching out to flick Tommy's ear.

"S'pose it is," Tommy grumbles.

"Good." Ghost sits back in his chair, and resumes eating with a smug self-satisfaction poised in his broad shoulders.

There's a kick under the table delivered to Tommy, though Soap can't tell by who. He only knows its recipient by the muttered sorry, John, that follows.

Soap supposes he can be content with that for now. He gives Tommy a close-lipped smile, fearing that any show of fangs might provoke him.

All things considered, things could be worse. Even his military training wouldn't give him a considerable upper-hand against a natural-born werewolf.

He'll have to talk to Ghost about it later. Maybe when the werewolf is shifted, and Soap can dig cold fingers through thick fur. Then again another time, when Ghost can respond with more than huffs and whines and low growls.

They'll figure it out—they've already done it once before with just each other.

But they definitely have to smooth things over sooner rather than later, or else it's going to be real awkward when Soap finally gets the courage to pull out the ring that's been weighing his pocket down for little over a month, now.

It's fine. Everything will be fine. Soap can manage interesting.

One of the things I like best about the second half of Season 7 -- one of the few things I like about it at all, if I'm being honest -- is the fact it lets Buffy accept that she's still growing up and figuring out who she is as a person. "I'm not finished becoming whoever the hell it is I'm gonna turn out to be", as she tells Angel in Chosen. She doesn't have to have all the answers, she doesn't have to be defined by the choices and mistakes she made when she was a miserable and lonely teenage girl, she doesn't have to have found a perfect relationship or future life partner before her twenty-third birthday.

The show ends with Dawn asking Buffy what they're going to do now that she isn't the singular Chosen One, and she doesn't offer an answer because she doesn't know yet! "That's kind of the point," as she also told Angel earlier.

I think that's a really good and emotionally satisfying place to end the series on -- with Buffy finally free of the destiny that she's been forced into ever since we met her, not because she's been forced to stop being a Slayer or because she’s sacrificed herself to save the world, but because she's no longer The Slayer but merely one of many. The story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is over, but the story of Buffy Summers has just begun. Who knows what will happen next?

It's why I've never been at all tempted to read the post-Season 7 comics, because there's no way that they -- or anyone -- can better that ending. By definition, a future of infinite possibilities is better than any concrete suggestion. (Also, yes, lots of the specific details I've heard about the comics make them sound pretty bad anyway, that's also a factor.)

It's also why I think it's kind of pointless to spend time arguing that Buffy definitely would or wouldn't end up in a relationship of some particular type, with somebody she knew before she was old enough to graduate college. Maybe she does get back together with Angel or Riley or Spike. Maybe she finally realizes she's attracted to Faith, or to Willow, or somebody else she met before the show ended. (Maybe Owen Thurman is still alive.) Maybe she meets somebody new. Maybe they get married, maybe they don't. Maybe they have kids, or adopt, and maybe they don't. Maybe Buffy decides she's happier single. Maybe she doesn't get to have the sort of romantic relationship she'd want at all; maybe other things get in the way.

Some of those possible futures sound like happier endings to me than others, and some seem more in keeping with the direction I'd like to imagine the story going if the show had continued. But anyone who tries to argue that they know which of those things would or wouldn't happen because they know what the sixteen or nineteen, or twenty-one year old Buffy would have wanted is, I think, not being serious. The show itself explicitly rejects this idea. Even though her mother's death has forced her to take on more adult responsibilities, Buffy herself is still growing up. We don't know what will happen to her a year, or five years, or ten years after Chosen. We don't know what she'll want, we don't know who she'll be. Buffy herself doesn't know that, so how could we possibly know?

As Buffy said, that's kind of the point!

the thing about faith lehane is that she is so fragile & delicate & hurt but the world made her believe that she couldn’t be those things (not safely) & so she became cruel. my siblings & I re watched ‘faith hope & trick’ last night & it’s been a while since I watched that one. I think the scene where she’s beating the shit out of a vampire yelling “this is me, you undead bastard” after a comment about how her dead mother hits harder than him is brought up a lot & for good reason. but the show goes on to drill into the audience how angry & hard faith is. that’s pretty core to her character & her fall from grace. we know that

what about the scene in the hotel where she’s faced with kakistos & she’s crying & falling on the ground repeating “no no no” & buffy has to drag her out of there? what about the scene right before she kills kakistos where buffy has to remind her to fight because she’s just letting him beat her? the thing about slayers is that they’re not allowed to be vulnerable AND strong, not really, not until the very end when all the slayers are called to work together. and it does have to be that way narratively, too.

buffy’s first love has to become her worst enemy after she sleeps with him. buffy has to be punished brutally for opening up to parker & reminded that people are cruel & the world is unforgiving & buffy has to lose riley because she’s not open enough (that’s not the real reason imo but it is narratively framed that way) & buffy has to refuse to be open with spike or emotionally available to him because she’s been forced to believe that she CAN’T be vulnerable with anyone by that time.

because the story demands it. buffy the vampire slayer is a story that knows it’s a story. it’s meta in a sense we don’t often see - not with quippy one liners that break the 4th wall - but with a crushing knowledge that the characters are trapped in the narrative & they can’t escape.

kendra learns to be more social & treat herself like a person not just a weapon & to open up to buffy & treat the scoobies as friends & she’s killed right away. buffy’s romances all fall apart until she meets someone who’s willing to accept the ways she can’t be open with him & then he dies. faith’s very introduction is framed in a way that posits that her killing the thing chasing her (her past) is the proper way to deal with it. so why would she ever assume that dealing with things through violence is wrong? when that’s the story she’s in?

The raven and the vampire

Ch6

A jasper x oc story that is a marvel and twilight crossover.

Everything was set. All of Bella's family had been convinced to go elsewhere. While she lied about staying with Alice and I for a girls weekend. I in turn lied to Jasper that my “aunt and uncle” and I were meeting up in New York with my father, mother and siblings since I hadn’t seen them in forever. The guilt of what I'm about to do eats away inside me. The plan had been made by Bella, Edward and jacob. Bella would be carried up the mountain by jacob to disguise her scent while alice rue and Rosalie spread her scent around the woods to attract the newborn army to the preordained field for the battle. Jacob and another wolf would protect Bella while the others all fought the army. In fact I was leaving now for the imaginary airport I was going to. Jasper bella and the others seeing me and my family off. Jasper has barely left my side sense he came to get me this morning for breakfast. The others just smile solemnly at me, more focused about what is to come.

“Jasper please, please be safe. “

“I will darling, I promise you, I will always come back to you”.

He leans down connecting our foreheads as he breathes me in. The words that I'm staying to help are on the tip of my tongue but after speaking with grandmother frigga about how fickle the future can be I keep them clamped down in hopes to not change the fates.

“Jasper, I want you to hear me when I say this. Everything is going to be fine. And anything that happens now is meant to I just pray that at the end of it we all come out unscathed.”

He looks at me puzzled but accepts my words with a nod. I hear Luke say it's time to go, and turn my head briefly but Jasper's cold hand on my cheek turns me back. He looks through me with his topaz eyes and gently brings me to him for a kiss. His lips are so soft on mine. As I take him in his strong grip on my waist and tender touch on my check. All I can do is pray to all the gods above that after tomorrow he still kisses me this way, or at all.

I pulled away tears burning behind my eyes, his thumb gently wiping them as he ushered me to the car.

“I love you elara.” He says in a gently soft voice for my ears only.

“I love you to jasper. I love you so much. Please please be safe. All of you be safe,” I shout out to the others behind him. I enter the car behind Mila as Lucas goes to drive off to our imaginary destination.

“All will be well my princess, they will understand in time.” Mila tries to reassure me

“From your lips to Odin's ears”

A ways away from the cullens estate I finally step out of the car.

“Are you sure about this my lady?”

“Yes Lucas, I want to make sure that anyone amongst the new borns knows there’s another way, i have to see if I can stop some unnecessary bloodshed.”

I send out my power a purple butterfly leaving my palm and darting up into the sky to find victoria and deliver my message to her.

Victorias pov

“Riley, is everyone ready?”

“Yes Victoria, they are all ready to attack.”

“Good we need to start a move on if we are to make it there on time.”

Victoria is ready to finish out her revenge. Already smiling at the thought of Edward's troubled face as she kills Bella in front of him when a purple butterfly flies into the camp. Its glowing attracts everyone as they all clamor for it. It lands on one of the metal canister scattered around the dump their using for hiding

“Victoria what the hell is that”

“I don't know”. She walks towards it slowly, just as she gets in range to grab it it explodes leaving a piece of paper in its wake.

“Riley grab it, tell me what it says” The young male walks up quickly slipping the paper away,

“It says if any of you value your life then turn back now and forget about this battle. Wait could this be from the Cullens, How?”

“I don't know but it doesn’t matter even if they added a new member to their stupid family we'll kill them all just the same.” Victoria screeches, grabbing the note and ripping it to shreds.

Jaspers pov

Sending off my mate killed me but her getting hurt would completely destroy me. Edward at least was able to watch over his mate himself but i had t trust that the newborns wouldn’t find her. Alice consoles me as we all decided to go hunting wanting to be in peak conditon before the battle now all I can do is wait. The sun slowly starts to appear over the horizon as the newborns and Victoria finally arrive.

Mid morning, a quick chat with Edward lets us know that even though the night was long everything and everyone is in place. We march along the trees to the destined location however arriving at the destination a disntinct purple gleam is seen on the horizon, we approach the shield slowly the purple magic shimmering in front of us.

“What is going on? What is this?” Rue asks

“Could this be a power one of the newborns possesses or something. Emmet chimes in.

“I don't know EM but if it is this will change everything. we need to regroup with the wolves and try something else,” carlisle always the leader he is states

“Then let’s get back to edward and bella and see what we can do and do it quickly.” Im about to turn when elaras voice comes from behind me

“It’s alright everyone”

All Heads turn to see elara standing there behind them

“elara how the hell,what are you doing here? Come on, I have to get you somewhere safe.” Right as I go to embrace my mate and hopefully whisk her away my hand goes right through her.

“What the hell.”

The illusion sadly smiles. “It’s ok Jasper, everything is going to work out. The barrier you're seeing is of my own creation. I wanted to make sure you all were in the correct area before I brought you any closer.”

The copy vanishes as the magical barrier slowly withdraws further from the woods. The cullens and the pack slowly being brought into the clearing foretold for the battle to come. A figure of a lone girl sits in the middle of the clearing a silver dog sitting next to her.

I rushes the Barrier to then be bounced off like a rubber band, quickly recovering, “elara elara,!” I yell fists banging on the barrier

“It’s ok jasper im right here”

Again we all spin around as the illusion of elara appears once more

“What is happening, how are you doing this?”

“Jasper, I'm so sorry. There’s so much I need to tell you, to tell all of you but after seeing that possible future that Alice saw I could no longer sit back. Even with the packs help none of you deserve to have this happen, Not when I can end this here and now.”

“elara what are you talking about.”

“Jasper, my love, my stars…….I'm not human, I never have been. I'm something else entirely……. To put simply, I come from a very powerful family and I have more experience in battle then I probably need and I was raised to protect the people I love and that is exactly what I'm doing.”

An orange spark is seen from the left and a very confused Edward, Jacob, Seth and Bella appearing seemingly out of thin air.

“What the hell.” Edward asks confusingly.

“Sorry I didn’t want to leave all of you up there in the cold. Victoria and her army will be here soon.”

“elara I don't know what’s going on dear but please let us help.” Esme chimes from beside her husband. All the current party now staring at the illusion.

“I'm sorry esme, I can’t do that right now.“

“Elara!”

With a sad smile i watch as the double disappears into purple shimmers, The sound of footsteps replacing it as Luke and Mila step out of the woods wearing armor of some kind

“Lucas?”

“Hello Carlisle, hello everyone.”

“What’s going on? What is elara doing? You have to help me get to her.” I plead desperately.

“I'm sorry but I am not the one to explain, that is something milady must do. For now I must do my duty and protect her highness. Please excuse me. Luke bows and steps through the barrier, Mila just smiling next to him Just as the others and I are about to run after them we hear the sound of many footsteps now approaching the other side of the clearing.

Elaras pov

Aurelius' head sits in my lap still in his husky form, his fur soothing as I hear the new vampires march into the clearing, the bright red hair sticking out at the front of the group. A low growl sounds from my lap Aurelius sensing the evil coming on the air. I can still sense everyone at the barrier. I know I should let them in but I can’t shake that horrible sight of Jasper getting hurt from my mind. I have to try my way first before anything happens to him. Standing Aurelius takes guard next to me,

“Glad to see you all could make it.”

“Who the hell are you” the sound spews from victoria's mouth

“My name is elara”

“She’s the one that has been around Bella lately, I've also seen her with the blonde Cullen.” Riley states from next to victoria

“Ahhh a new Cullen pet, i must say im impressed especially at whatever this is around us. But this has nothing to do with you.”

“I'm afraid it does, you’ve become a threat to people I love. So I will give you a chance. You and anyone in your group hear me now. There are other options. You don't need to be like her, there is a better way of life for you.”

“Ok stop.! Victoria all but yells. “What makes you think you can come in here and change anything? All I see is one tiny human. And over 35 of us. What will you do?”

“Human? When did I say I was human.”

For the first time in front of everyone I let the midgardian glamor fade. My true self being revealed in my armor, the light reflecting off the gold accents as my jacket flows in the light wind,ready to leave these cretins in the dust.

The breeze howls through the trees and I can tell the simple show of magic has confused everyone around.

“What’s wrong Victoria, did that simple display shock you? Wait for this one.” I turn to Aurelius and pet him and with a flip of my wrist I break the magic on Aurelius, Gone is the small husky and in his place stands the 10 ft tall wolf. Growling in agitation.

“This is my last warning to all of you. None of you need to fight this battle, it was not your choice to become hat she has made you, but it is your choice how you choose to go about your new existents”

I see many of the new vampires stare and turn to each other Victoria and Riley telling them to shut up and stay silent. They all seem to comply except for a young girl in the back. Her long brown hair flows in the breeze as er big red doe eyes fill with terror. I can tell she’s different than the others as she quickly runs over to me before either Riley or Victoria can catch her.

“Please please dont hurt me i didnt do anything”

“Hush now im not going to hurt you. I can tell your different from them, do you want a different path” I ask the trimblin girl she simply nods. Putting my hand on her shoulder i turn her towards esme instructing Aurelius to look after her and make sure she mad it to the Cullen matriarch’s side.

“Aurelius here will protect you, I promise once this is all over you’ll be well taken care of.” The young girl turns back frightened to look at Victoria one last time

“She can’t do anything to you anymore. I swear on my name if you choose the Cullens you will have a good life.”

“I, I, want to b happy”

“Good” i push her towards Aurelius the beast quickly crouching down as i urge her onto his back, before they take off back towards the Cullens home.

TRAITOR!!!!! Riley yells after her

“Now tell me, how is that young girl a traitor when she has done nothing other than being one of your many victims” Murmers go through their numbers

“Whether she stays with us or you it doesn’t matter all of you will be dead by the end of the day especially you.” I simply smile at her shaking my head at her poor attempts of self control, summoning my golde staff i draw Aline in the dirt infront of me.

“If. You choose not to take my offer as the girl has I will cut you down were you stand a burn the pieces.’ Adding to my threat i materialize and wooden pier quickly setting it on fire.”

“You’re going to cut us. Into pieces with what the stick in your hand. Please all of these little illusions of yours are impressive I’ll give you that but you wont stop us. You two kill her.” Victoria shouts ordering two newborns that were at the front of the group forward.” They were both tall burly males slightly bigger than Emmet. I guess she thought to intimidate me,which is laughable.The two advance quickly, i hear yelling off to my side where jasper is banging on the barrier. Fear evident in his eyes. I just smile at him as the new borns finally come not range. With a quick turn of my hand the blade of my scythe comes into existents. My blade comes up to bock their punches the strength sending me back slightly, but i recover quickly.

Spinning the staff around to bring it across the one on my left torso i go to lock another punch from the other before bring my scythe across his neck. The air is still as the two newborns fall to pieces, their bodies slumping hardly to the ground before I throw the pieces. Into the raging fire.

I see victoria is shaken as many of the others are but she refuses to back down. I see her whisper to Riley as a look of determination comes across his face the battle call of kill her being yelled out.

I take out a few at a time dodging and weaving through the bodies, i know im out numbered and that i should drop the field but I can’t.

“Princess drop the field, you may be strong but it is only right to let the others join you in this battle.” Lucas states over our telepathic link

“I can’t yet i need t thin them out a little more.

“Elara let me in.” I hear jasper pounding away on the barrier

My distraction costs me as on of the newborns lands a hit to my side winding me, crashing sideways into the dirt

“PRINCESS! Lucas yells once more

“Fine” I jump out of the pack quickly. Advancing on me to the the other side of the field and withdraw my magic.i watch then as the cullens and the pac rush in to the fray. Taking down newborns as they went. I see emmetswinging bodies around, Paul and him working together to dispatch bodies as quickly as possible, Alice and ruework in tandem as where rose and esme each taking on a hand full of newborns. I try to quickly set all the bodies ablaze as they go.

As the newborn army puts up a fight I see Riley and victoria running around not really helping their army simply trying to find openings to do damage to the cullens or the pack.

“VICTORIA”

Her head whips towards me a snarl filling her face and she rushes towards me.

“YOU. You ruined EVERYTHING.”

“You did this to yourself Victoria,”

“I will get my revenge even if it’s not today i swear to you the cullens will get whats coming to them.”

All i see is her red hair filling me vision as the thoughts of how she could have cost me everyone I had come to love, and the want to simply cut her down and be done with this mess is not enough anymore. Dropping my scythe i reach for my powers the purple glow of the enveloping my hands and rushing towards victorias form like a bolt of lightning. The had sharp edges of ice leaving a path in their wake before crashing into her freezing her in her stride

The chaos around me is now silent, the battle finally ending. I look up and everyone is staring at me, different looks and emotions crossing each of their faces. But all i feel is indifference enveloping me. Piking up my scythe i slowly stride towards Victoria’s frozen form. Raising my arms and with one final swing i shatter Victoria into a million pieces .

“Elara?” i her jasper gently callout as im about to walk towards him till i hear Alice gasp out. All heads turning towards her

The volutori is all she says. All the Cullens immediately stiffening back up

Who?”

Theres no time carlisle explains “we need to get this fixed quickly Sam the pack needs to go now the volturi will not respect our treaty. Elara i dont know if you can but can you make the are look as though we where the. Only ones fighting, the volturi dont need to know about the pack or you.”

Everyone stares at me waiting for my answer, i simply look at Carlisle wanting to know what has him so frazzled. But all i see in his eyes is darkness and death, so i simply nod summoning my aesre it sweeps over the scene cleaning up the mess or the battle.

“Elara?” esme ask her face motherly as everything that needs to be said sits silently in the air.

I simply nod and set to work erasing all signs of me and Aurelius. The former coming up to me shrinking back into his husky form.

“I agree but not without her” i point over to the newborn girl from earlier

“If these people are as dangerous as you say i doubt they’d spare anyone they do not currently recognize”

“You would be correct” carlisle states next to his wife

“Come.” I stick my hand out for the young one. She timidly takes it

“I will take her back to your home and make sure she’s ok.”

“Rue go with her just in case you’ll be able to look after the girl well” esme adds quickly

“Ok” rue runs over and just kinda stands next to me intimidation rolling off her in waves. I put my hand on each off their shoulders preparing to teleport.

elara wait is all jasper can get out before i strike him with my stare. And vanish.

my read on buffy's relationships is that they all fit for where she is in her journey:

angel arrives when she's feeling desperate and in need of protection, and is literally her white knight, and then he's not only unable to protect her, he becomes the source of her danger, and then she's forced to grow up past the need of him (which to his credit, is something he also realises)

after that what she wants is stability, and riley appears to be that, especially when she first meets him, but then all of that happens and he starts projecting all his insecurities onto her and is actually a thoroughly unsteady presence, who asks an impossible amount from her at one of her most vulnerable moments

and then she and spike "find" each other sort of, and spike is always a mess, but at that point she's also a complete mess and so they act out all that messiness with each other, but then actually they do sort of try to help each other crawl out of all of that (not easily of course) and have a fair few moments of very deep, understood connection, and he becomes a surprisingly reliable presence, which neither angel nor riley managed to be

and then of course there's faith, who's there from the beginning and has a kind of interweaving relationship with buffy where they act as varying kinds of mirrors to one another, at first often in self-destructive ways, but then she becomes her second in command and she's the one who's survived and is there after the fall of sunnydale (and if I'd go with any read personally, it's the buffy-and-faith post-show manifesto all the way)

I know robin is also in there, but he and buffy are kind of a non-starter/he was mainly there to get (deserved) revenge on his mother's killer, and unfortunately I think he should have been introduced a season earlier to give him more space to integrate into the story *deep breath* but yeah he and buffy never get as close as she does with other relationships, but there is something interestingly "buffy is now an adult dating another adult" about their early encounters

in the end though, what is really important is that buffy is polyamorous in her heart, as are especially all the vampires, they've been in an on and off again polycule for over a hundred years!

Dark Elf Chapter 4: Hidden Agendas

She needed to steal his spell breaker.

A good spell breaker was hard to find and worth their weight in gold. Shifters made especially good ones because they were immune to most forms of magic.

That was the whole point. If one was standing near you, they were a literal shield against any type of magical attack.

But they didn’t do it for free.

She wondered what Liam had offered him and if he was open to better offers.

There was a knock on her door.

She opened it to find Drake standing there.

A sultry smile spread across her face, “We meet again.”

“Liam sent me to make sure no humans wander in here and wind up a pile of ashes....again,” he responded, “I’m to escort you to the dining room when you’re ready.”

“Okay,” she smirked as she stood back and gestured for him to enter the room, “Come on in.”

“I’m fine waiting out here in the hallway.”

Was that a whiff of nervousness she caught?

Oh, how delightful! She made the tiger nervous!

Maybe she had a chance to sway his loyalty.

“Actually, I need your help with something so, please…come in,” she gestured again.

His countenance was filled with reluctance as he regarded her for a moment before a resigned exhale escaped him and he stepped through the threshold, “Fine.”

“What’s wrong, shifter? Why don’t you like me?” She asked, “We were getting along so well last night!”

He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him, “I didn’t say I don’t like you. I’ve just never met a demon before. My mother always said you can’t trust them.”

Riley threw her head back and laughed.

The laugh was pure and genuine and it took him by complete surprise.

She didn’t sound evil and diabolical.

“I’m sorry,” she gave him her sweetest smile, “It’s just that my mother always told me that you can’t trust shifters!”

He looked startled at that, “Really? Why not?”

She gave him a sharp look but found no sign of sarcasm in his expression, just curiosity.

Interesting.

Was it possible he was completely unaware of the politics of interspecies relations?

He was refreshingly naïve and strangely innocent, despite making his living as a spell breaker in the employee of a halfling elven prince with dark intentions.

Perhaps she could use that to her advantage.

“Well, no matter,” she changed the subject, “You’re immune to demon magic and even if you weren't, I've been properly neutralized.” She held her arm up to show him the enchanted cuff.

“That’s true…” he seemed to relax a little, “so what did you need help with?”

He was also immune to the vampiric charm she wielded, but if Liam had assumed she didn’t know how to use her good old mundane human wiles, then he had been sorely mistaken.

Riley perched on the edge of her dressing table chair, her posture rigid, the tight fit of her dress making it impossible to bend forward far enough to reach her shoes.

She lifted a leg toward him as she dangled the stilettos from her fingertips, “I need help with my heels.”

Drake crossed the room and stopped in front of her.

Their eyes locked and held as he took the shoes from her hand and slowly knelt in front of her.

His hands ran up her leg to grasp her calf, his fingers digging in deeper than they needed to.

The heat in his eyes set off every predatory instinct she had and she had to fight to keep her fangs from sliding out.

He was on his knees in front of her, the traditional pose of supplication. Men in that position were usually trembling in fear.

He was trembling all right, but not from fear.

He dropped his gaze from her face as he held her leg with one hand and slid the first shoe onto her foot with the other.

His fingers fumbled with the buckle. “Sorry,” he mumbled as he finally got it on his third try.

“Nothing to be sorry for,” she crooned as she recrossed her legs, stretching the other one out to him.

His fingers traced slowly from the top of her foot up her leg, again stopping at the calf.

As he fastened the buckle into place on the second shoe, she leaned forward a little and slid her hands through his hair, “That’s perfect, thank you.”

He looked up at her as his hands ghosted up both sides of her leg from her ankle to her knee, “Whatever we’re doing here, I’m pretty sure we shouldn’t be doing.”

She licked her lips slowly as she watched his face, “You’re just helping me with my shoes. Where’s the harm in that?”

“Right,” he leaned forward cautiously, his eyes locked on hers as his lips found the inside of her thigh.

She jerked up straighter in the chair, a small moan escaping her lips.

Her fingers twisted in his hair, encouraging the upward trajectory of his kisses.

A knock on the door reminded them that it was time to head to dinner.

He pulled back and gazed up at her, “Should I stop?”

“For now.” She caressed his face, “meanwhile, be a good boy and help me up.”

He stood and offered her his hand. He pulled her to standing and they stayed that way for a moment, hands clasped, mere inches apart, each trying to read what was going on behind the other’s eyes.

Riley spoke first, “Why do you serve him?”

Drake blinked, “What?”

“Liam. What does he offer you for your loyalty?”

Drake stepped away, folding his arms across his chest as a guarded look flitted across his features, “Friendship.”

“Friendship?” That was unheard of. No one provided spell breaker services for free…for friendship….

“My mother was killed by a monster in the black spire mountains while we were in cat form,” he explained, “I escaped and made it into the Kenna National Forest. I was just a cub. Liam found me, alone and wounded. He took me in, without even knowing what I was. He brought me back to the palace and nursed me back to health.”

She wondered if he were truly stupid or just playing dumb.

Liam was an elf. Of course he had known what Drake was. Even a halfling elf knew what a shifter smelled like.

“A monster?”

He shrugged, “I was very young and I’ve never seen a creature like it again. I don’t know what it was.”

She shook her head with a confused smile. “Most people, humans and esseri alike think you’re the monster you know.” She used the term esseri, a catch-all word for any type of being that wasn’t human.

She wasn’t wrong. Even werewolves stayed away from Pantheras. Everyone knew it wasn’t wise to mess with shifters that turned into any of the big cats.

Lions, tigers, and panthers, oh my.

“I haven’t met that many esseri,” he shrugged, “and humans are stupid. They know nothing about us. They believe ridiculous things.”

“Like what?”

“Like that we can’t shift until puberty. What a crock of shit,” he scoffed.

“That’s a ridiculous myth,” she agreed, “Your nature is your nature from conception. What else do they believe?”

“If the baby shifts in utero it will rip its way out of the human mother.”

Riley shuddered, “How utterly morbid! What’s wrong with humans? Where do they come up with this shit?”

“I don’t know,” Drake replied, “As if the baby shifts on its own! Until it’s born, the baby’s form depends on the mother! If she shifts, so does the baby. Simple. I don’t know where these crazy myths come from!”

“Humans,” Riley shook her head as a thought occurred to her, “So, you were raised here at the palace? Not with other tigers?”

“That’s right,” he confirmed as his phone chirped. He pulled it from his pocket, scanned the message then returned it, “I don’t think Liam is happy we ignored the reminder knock. Time to go.”

“Yes,” she drawled, “Our prince summons us.”

He offered her his arm and she took it. They walked through the halls of the palace with a perfectly respectable amount of space between them.

She betrayed no emotion as he handed her off to Liam.

“Lady Riley, you look lovely tonight,” Liam kissed her hand decorously then pulled out her chair.

“Thank you, my prince,” she brushed her lips across his cheek as she took the offered seat.

She watched Drake walk away then turned to smile politely at Liam before shifting her focus to the man across the table from her. The one responsible for bringing her here.

Max caught her eye and paled a little at the attention.

A slow smile crawled across her face. She needed the shifter’s protection, and she needed the halfling’s blood, then she would decide the human’s fate.
