something i am utterly obsessed with is the physical copy of dracula that i recently purchased that has , as part of its foreword , some of the original idea notes that bram stoker had about what dracula’s vampiric powers/traits would be.
one of these is that dracula’s likeness cannot be captured in a painting , he always looks like someone else.
which only leads me to imagine a scenario in which the count lines many of his castle hallways with paintings of himself throughout the centuries but none of them look the same and none of them look like him but jonathan can’t help but notice they all somehow look eerily similar.
he brushes it off , assuming they are simply counts of generations past.

God returned with a moth chained to his hand "There's so many things that you'll never understand... So come to me, we can change night into day. You'll hold my hand so you'll never go astray." GOD DEVOURED THAT OF FATHER
Honey I'm Home - GHOST ft. DEX
This is a project I have been working on since August, and I thought there was no better time to post these frames on Halloween!
This is art of my ongoing Orice series where Jonathan is targeted by Dracula in October rather than Mina.

Draco Actias - Dragon Moth
This specimen’s habitat can range from Temperate climates to Savanna and Desert climates. Draco Actias have been recorded to grow up to 14in (35.5cm) with a wingspan of 2 feet and 7 inches (79 cm).
They express incredible hunting prowess after mating, preferring small birds and lizards. Unlike most moths, their offspring are obligate carnivores. They can consume vegetation, but they will not survive or thrive without meat. The parents of clutches will guard and provide for their young until they are large enough to fend for themselves.
They have also been seen attempting to tackle creatures x50 their size. It is not recommended to handle them without proper equipment or training, as the claws on the tips of their wings have microscopic teeth facing backwards to help them cling to their prey.

At one point in Dracula they mention that vampires can control moths. What I want to know is: Why the hell is no one making moth vampires!!!
Turning into moths instead of bats, sleeping in cocoons, fluffy half-transformed vampires with big moth wings and inhumanly dark eyes. Moths are even (mostly) nocturnal!

Happy October! My daily drawings (or as daily as I can manage) are all little moth fairies this year, to join my mushroom and flower fairies from the last few Octobers. This is a Luna Moth, paired with their favorite persimmon leaves!

06/05/2023 Caterpillar making Nonstandard Life Choices.
Marmara arbutiella is a tiny caterpillar that lives inside arbutus leaves. It leaves the waxy top and bottom layer of the leaf intact for shelter and eats a tunnel through the juicy middle layer, writing a gleaming silvery spiral into the flesh of the leaf.
The Blue Haired Girlfriend found this Caterpillar of Nonstandard Life Choices living in a salal leaf instead of an arbutus lead. These eccentrics turn up occasionally in a small area that includes our island.
We know the salal-dwellers are Marmara arbutiella, because someone sent a salal leaf with a caterpillar in it to Charley Eiseman (see @lies's Charley Eiseman Appreciation Post) and he got it DNA barcoded.
But nobody has observed a salal-dweller outside the leaf. We don't know if it has morphological differences from the arbutus-dwellers as an adult moth, like maybe a new subspecies is starting to branch off here.
So we picked the leaf and put it in a jar with a little moss to hold moisture. Hopefully there's still a Caterpillar of Nonstandard Life Choices in it, and the caterpillar will crawl out of the leaf, make a cocoon, and emerge into an adult we can send to Charley Eiseman.
The cocoon is pretty exciting too, described in the poetic words of Wagner, Loose, Fitzgerald, De Benedictis, and Davis:
The larvae exhibit a fascinating cocoon-spinning behavior which involves prolonged ornamentation of the cocoon with dozens of anally extruded compartmentalized bubbles, each of which is individually wrapped in silk and pushed through to the outer cocoon surface.
I, for one, am delighted at the prospect of a cocoon containing a moth nobody has ever seen, festively garlanded in silk-wrapped bug farts.
