a lil somethin’ on my mind

If you were to somehow find yourself looking into the kitchen cabinet adjacent to my oven you would see an array of ceramic bowls coated in a pattern my mother is particularly fond of. If you were to look closer, however, into the tight conglomeration that is this cabinet, you would find, gammed into the left corner, a handful of grape-flavored jolly ranchers. For countless years these jolly ranchers have sat in the corner of this cabinet, aging, undesired, and of course, uneaten. Anytime I have a craving for something sweet, I will inevitably find myself gazing into this cabinet, looking at these sad, expired confections, my desire for sweets though, is never strong enough to convince me to have one.

The life of a grape jolly rancher is a rather gloomy one. Everyone is aware of them, but they are never chosen. Certainly, nobody’s favorite. Of course, the more likable watermelon, cherry, or green apple flavors reign supreme.

On those days when I find myself looking into this kitchen cabinet and my gaze falls on these pitiful candies, I worry. I worry that perhaps, that is me. That I am a grape-flavored jolly rancher. The one surrounded by candies of a finer taste, the one that is kept around only because nobody has It in them to just throw it away, the one that will inevitably be stored in a kitchen cabinet corner someday to rot and expire, unchosen, uneaten, unloved. And how upsetting it is to be the flavor that nobody enjoys.

We never are happy with what we have, or where we are at, discontentment is a disease that seeps into our lives through a lack of compassion for others or ourselves. contentment is a difficult thing to obtain when all we can see are the parts about ourselves, we don’t like. Still, no matter how often I find myself looking upon these sweets with disdain, I cannot stop myself from hoping that someday, someone else may find themselves looking into my kitchen cabinet, filled with excitement as I hear them say,

“Oh! Grape…

my favorite!”.
