No time for my usual daily drawings this October, so I'll be reposting old art from my personal project "Ensouled" every day (what time I have is gonna go to writing instead). To start, here's some early explorations from around 2017-18. I was (and still am) experimenting a lot with the visual style.
Because most of my drawing time is spend either mimicking others' styles or drawing non-human characters, I have no innate sense of what "my" way of drawing humans is. The top collage is one of my favorite drawings, and is, I think, as close to what feels like a personal style. But it's very hard for me to stay consistent, and not slip into overworking things. For the three sketch pages, I was looking at Franco-Belgian cartooning styles to capture more stylized proportions and energetic linework. There's a lot here I like-- I think it'd be worth revisiting these looks as I keep studying.

Sometimes I feel like something gets lost in translation when the English subtitles for Pan's Labyrinth refer to the fairy kingdom as the "underworld" (or the "Underground Realm," in the opening narration).
In one of the pages of Guillermo del Toro's notebooks featured in his book Cabinet of Curiosities, there's a note made by del Toro about beings called the "Mouros," said to live in underground cities. Del Toro goes on to note that in Galicia (where Pan's Labyrinth is meant to be set), it is believed that the mountains are hollow and contain underground realms and cities. So this is clearly what del Toro used as inspiration for the backstory involving the missing princess.
It's also interesting how the motion comics included in the DVD/Blu-Ray release of the film refer to the fairy kingdom as "Bethmoora," a place mentioned in Lord Dunsany's works (and, also, the name del Toro gave to the kingdom of the elves in Hellboy 2).

I know your fingernails are the colour of rust (come back) And your veins are empty of dust But our voices collide with each howl of the tide Singing all hell and its fire waits for us.

Day 2 of reposting old Ensouled art: today, some VERY early concepts. I think these were the first passes on Sequoia, Charley, and Monty? I did the Monty design really quickly so I could make him in one of my 3D modeling classes. The model is fine as a standalone thing, but really didn't capture the look I knew I wanted. Immediately after this I redid his design. I also did a lot of Zbrush sketches in that class; that last pic is one of the more successful ones. I really would like to get back into making and using 3D assets to speed up the illustration process, I haven't done it since I lost access to the student edition of Maya.
