Gods, can I gush about the CGI in the Percy Jackson show for just a minute??

All of it is so fucking good!

The work was gone by ILM or Industrial Light and Magic, who are an incredible effects house and also one of the oldest effects houses there is. ILM was founded in the 1970s by George fucking Lucas to make the effects for the original Star Wars trilogy. They are the reason the original Jurassic Park had CGI in the first place! They worked with Jim Henson on The Dark Crystal and Tobe Hooper on Poltergeist, which has sone crazy awesome effects if you've never seen it. A part of ILM broke off in the 1990s and became fucking PIXAR!!

And Percy Jackson has had just the best looking effects I've seen in a long time. The creature work alone is worth so many awards. The minotaur was amazing.

And the illusion of Chiron is never broken, it's just seamless and perfect.

And don't get me started on Medusa's snakes. They're PERFECT. THEY ACT LIKE REAL SNAKES!!!

And the chimera was beautiful. I loved the decision to give it a cobra's frill.

Also, water is a notoriously difficult effect to do and all the water looks amazing in this show. I bet they pulled some people from the Avatar sequel to help with it.

And Grover's legs never look bad. They're always perfect. I love the decision to keep them exposed the whole time, it adds to the magical feeling of the world while also showcasing how powerful the Mist really is.

And one of my favorite effects HAS to be the way Mrs. Dodds' coat turned into her wings. I saw that and had an out of body experience.

But this most recent episode just blew me away. Specifically with this (these next gifs are by @stevenrogered) :

So, if you didn't know, tracking an effect onto someone's body is incredibly difficult. It's so difficult that CGI artists will often replace someone's body with a 3D model in order to make it easier. That could be what happens here in part, but they can't fake Walker's face.

Props to Walker for sitting as still as humanly possible during this incredibly emotional scene. Him sitting still helps make the tracking of the effect easier since the artists don't have to adjust the effect every frame to account for the slightest movements. Which brings me to the face.

It is so hard to animate human faces and not fall into the uncanny valley, and yes this effect applies to that. Look at the way the gold conforms to the shape of his mouth as he speaks. Look at how it follows the movement of his chin, his cheeks. It's PERFECT. This is an incredibly impressive effect and I wanna just worship whichever overworked and underpaid VFX artist spent hours of their life working on it.

Fun fact, in the begining credits of The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Andreas sister is actually mentioned when shes scanning through her planner!

A fact I doubt anyone cares about but I enjoy nonetheless. Its just enjoyable to see a reference to a character only portrayed in the books.

People should know how amazing voice dubs are. Especially in Latino Spanish. You would hear the most wildest phrases and slangs. It's even more fun when you recognize the voice in other characters.

Example: Kakashi and Shrek share the same Mexican voice dub actor Alfonso Obregón. So now you can hear Shrek use the Sharingan.

Hi! A naughty ask for a reading, do people who know as much about movies as he does make him horny? And how does he feel about movie nerd girls and movie nerd boys?

Hiya! Let’s go for a slightly naughty one this time! I asked if he might possibly get horny for the movie nerds and the first pull was the Ace of Cups reversed, King of Coins and 7 of Swords reversed.

Ace of Cups reversed points to him feeling emotionally unbalanced in the beginning. He might get kind of blocked at first, like his Cup has become empty and he has lost what he had, the Cup has been overturned. King of Coins shows him trying to keep his shit together. He will then come up as someone stable and “wealthy”, comfortable with the subject and confident, like he knows what he’s talking about (and he actually does), and like he can can even offer something more to the person. However, 7 of Swords reversed means he might still end up questioning himself and feeling the “impostor syndrome” to some degree. He could start doubting himself, maybe fearing the other person knows more than him, even if that is not true.

The second pull was the 4 of Cups, 4 of Wands and 9 of Swords. 4 of Cups could be pointing to him becoming kind of stagnant, uncertain, insecure and struggling to actually choose something to talk about. What movies should they even discuss? 4 of Wands, on the other hand, shows him then feeling joy and pride for what he’s got, his knowledge in movies and having found someone who shares that with him. There’s this sense of harmony and union, a reason to celebrate and have some drinks while talking about their common passion. This joy will only be overshadowed by the 9 of Swords and the anxiety and worries this connection would also bring. An anxiety to prove he actually does know about movies?

Anyway, “horny” doesn’t seem to be really the word. He will like it but there is a lot of fear of not “performing” well enough. I then pulled one card for the movie nerd boys and one for the movie nerd girls.

For the boys it was the Page of Swords. Lol ⚔️ He will be intellectually engaged with the guy, possibly even feeling like he (Pedro) may know less than him, which makes him uncomfortable. He will want to communicate, to talk about movies and explore his knowledge and the other’s knowledge and that might be exciting too. A great discussion and the need to be on the same level (or higher) in terms of intellect and knowledge. For the girls it was the 10 of Cups. This card means he might feel happy and comfortable with girls who know about movies. It’s actually gonna be very satisfying and emotionally fulfilling like he’s found his match.

I would say for the boys it’s like “wow, let me show him how much I know, it’s gonna be amazing 🤩” and for the girls it’s like “wow, marry me, keep talking nerd to me, it’s gonna be amazing 😍!”.

Again, “horny” would not be the word. More like mesmerized while also anxious and scared of fucking it up and realizing he is not THAT good with movies as he thought. 😅 Of course this is just a general feeling. It doesn’t mean he wouldn’t get horny for a movie nerd, it may depend on other factors too. 😅😅
