My view of romance in The Breakfast Club
(originally written for my school's news paper as a movie review, thought it would interest some folks if I shared it here too)
I particularly have a problem with the ending of the movie. Claire gives Allison a makeover, why not, but it’s only after she sucks out the life out of everything that made her Allison that Andrew truly liked her and dared expressing his feelings to her, which sucks! Sure, he did show some interest in her before but so did everyone, because she was strange, because that’s her main trait as a character! But 80’s movies logic obliges, he fell in love with her when she became normal, even though they haven’t even known each other for more than 24 hours, which is the most unrealistic thing in that movie, but same goes for Claire and John, why would she go for him when he has been nothing but a jerk to her? I was rooting for Claire + Andrew (as cliché as it sounds) or even Claire + Brian (seriously, how come he doesn’t get a romantic ending too, he is so boyfriend material, of maybe I just have a thing for nerds), but nooo, they decided to go with my least favorite trope: “if he picks on you it’s because he likes you”. Former bullied kid here: this is a lie just to excuse the harmful behavior of boys, because as you know it society is misogynistic. Why does everything have to revolve around romance? Why can’t they just be friends first, go on a date maybe some time, get into a relationship after a bit, but they barely even know anything about each other, yes the little vent session they had was nice, but we have no clear idea of Allison and Brian’s lives at home, Claire hasn’t even revealed why she ended up in detention, nobody can name an interest or hobby of John, and do you know how Andrew is performing in school? No, you don’t, and neither do the characters in the movie. But as much as those feel like details and they can still learn about all of that when they are on a relationship, it is wrong to say you are in love with someone when you don’t even know what their dream career is or how many exes they have, not to mention that all of those questions could be deal breakers; and I will die on that hill.
(if I misread some of the characters or scenes please let me know and I will take notice of it)

Batman the Doom that came to Gotham
"Review"
Tumblr media
Never read the books that accompanied this movie but its made good
Spoilers below cut
Standouts:
1. Sanjay Tawde
Voiced by Karan Brar from Jessie. Literally brought me back. I love that such a simple change to the character made me so happy evey time I saw him on screen. Like its Jason but its also Karan. I loved the little details they put into him. He's always reading, you can tell he's been lectured about his foul mouth by all the stand-ins he has for actual cuss words. He's happy-go-lucky former street rat Jay Jay. More from him in the future I beg.
2. Brucie
This movie is a stone throw away from hitting all of the baby girl marks for Bruce Wayne. Very not okay mentally. Very scrumply umply. Very much loving life with his babies🥺. He's a dramatic bitch, I could not be more proud. (Very in love with Harvey) like he would've been so happy on the high seas with his little family.
Also love an old timey batman. Like bruce shouldn't exist in any other time period after watching this.
3. Ollie
Very bimbo, very drunk, very he would flash his titties if he had them(and you know they're bright pink and pretty)
Ollie being a drunk will always be my favorite Ollie. He's serious when he needs to be but I'm glad we didn't get too much of that as it detracts from his beauty.💅🏿
Now about the the actual movie:
I remember going into this movie saying to myself they better not kill my babies and what the f*** did they do. Like after a certain point in the movie I didn't know what was going to happen. I enjoyed every crazy ass turn they took. I love what they did for the Cassandra (Kai Li)of that universe too. All the characters were their same weird freaky selves in different fonts, I hope they make something like this again😭 (I'm probably going to edit and add to this post cause I'm fresh out and still processing oml)
Honorable mentions
Yo I feel like Alfred was based off peppermint butler. Mans was un bothered.
Cracking myself open for Talia as we speak.
Ra's Al Ghul kinda a bitch in this, like Ra's is normally selfish/self serving and he was resurecting fucking starro or sum shit
I love not having to hate harvey
This is a must watch the only thing they could've done differently is releases this on Halloween. This was good enough for theaters even.

Currently watching Tangled,
-for the first time is forever 🎶
Some thoughts:
Maybe the guitar music as the major instrument for this film has to do with the origins of Rapunzel from the Mediterranean?
The Royals might still have the sun plant somewhere. You replant, you “dead end” the flower to make soup, you continue to care for it with hopes it flowers again. Did that show up in the tv show anywhere?
Useing a pan to fight is a very traditional fantasy trope. Usually reserved for a side character, but still very present. Tangled just brought it out into the common zeitgeist.
Mother Gothel is the worst for many many reasons. Today’s realization- she never braided Rapunzel’s hair. It would have been easy to start when she was little and teach her how to do it herself. It would have meant tripping over it less and spending less time on brushing. You can even keep a long enough tail for brushing while doing the song. She didn’t. Why? Because it was another layer of control. It means it is harder for Rapunzel to leave. It means Rapunzel feels like she is cared for when Gothel brushes it during the song. It keeps Rapunzel “clumsy,” a reason Gothel gives not to let her leave. Or maybe Gothel is just lazy and neglectful. Either way- as someone with super long hair? I hate that woman.
Meanwhile- the Royals never gave up on thier kid coming home. It’s not just the tradition of the lights. It’s that crown. Baby Rapunzel wears that crown in murals. They had that crown sized up, EVERY YEAR, as thier child would have grown. They thought about what she would look like if she showed up tomorrow. They didn’t just recall a baby once a year and mourn. They planned for her to return. That hurts. 👑 💔
Realization after that one- Flynn you absolute RAT. How could you?!
Unintentional side effect of Rapunzel hauling a person up the side of the tower everyday- your girl has impressive upper body strength. She could toss a full grown man into a wardrobe. Gothel… much like keeping her birthday on the same day, your laziness has been turned against you. 😂
The Chameleon has not been out of the Tower any more than Rapunzel, he just has a deep distrust of Mother Gothel. ( proof is in him insisting they check Flynn for pointy teeth😂) I am so happy Rapunzel had that. It’s also even funnier to watch his reaction to everything after your realize that 😂
Dad- “Did you know one of the brothers is Ron Perlman?”
Me- “How could you not? Did you hear the voice?”
Later question- did the other one ever speak??
Flynn is BRUISED. Smacked with a pan, stuffed in a wardrobe, fingers jammed in a door, lands on his face, bashes himself in a fight several times, then is crushed by rocks while trying to escape drowning. Realistically, that song is the only reason the man is able to walk rather than limp into town the next day. 😂
“And you’re still gonna go back?” The girl stole his retirement (his dream, really), and has been a constant irritant since he met her, but the moment he knows the real situation she’s in, he is concerned for her happiness and freedom. He still doesn’t know how bad her mother is, just that she’s been confined. I love him so much. ❤️
And that gives her the confidence to tell her mother “No!” He didn’t even say any more than that. Haveing someone care for you when you are in a bad spot is SO IMPORTANT.
And then-! Just walks out of the wood and sees her standing a little too still. “Hey, are you ok?” 😍
This girl has never seen a horse in her life. And she does that. Seriously. That is a big beefy horse. I like horses, and I would be so much more cautious. Rapunzel knows no fear is all I am saying.
That man has spent time with children. He knew exactly who to ask. He LOOKED for them. Love that continuation of the backstory from the orphanage. Character continuity at its finest.
That dance music has become the sound of joy online. That is beautiful.
They showed the father grieving, and the mother comforting. That is so HUGE, I don’t even have words to explain.
I think Pascal wanted to see the lights almost as much as she did. 🥹
“At Last I See the Light” might be up there as one of the best Disney love songs. ❤️🎶 It is just such a perfect display of who the characters are, how they are changing, and why. And of course the imagery is soft, warm, and iconic. Just Beautiful.🤩
He really stopped caring about the life he dreamed for himself since he was a child. Idk if that says something about how in love he is, or something about how he always cared more for people than gold than he thought he did, but either way, I am still in love with this man ❤️
Omg- she embroidered her own dress. It’s such a small detail, but I love it. She learned all the cottage core crafts, didn’t she? 🥰😆
“It was the old lady” = her mother will do anything, including put her in danger, to keep her imprisoned forever. He is so real for making that connection so fast. Street kid knows what is up, and he will not stand for it. I honestly think he would have gotten her out even if nothing romantic ever happened, and that, at the core of it, is why I like him. 👍
Just- the sheer bafflement of the guards and Flynn alike in that entire escape scene 🤣
Maximus- don’t get this twisted. I am here for the girl.
Actually- now I want to know, what did the horse see that led him to lead an escape mission for his enemy? Did he follow Gothel to the tower? I am intrigued.
Just in case we weren’t convinced, they actually had her “kick the puppy.” 🥺
In revenge, Pascal is like “Nah, we ain’t waiting for her to die of old age.” Ruthless. 😈
As a thief and orphan/street kid, it completely tracks that he would see the life Rapunzel was made to live and equate it to death. I mean, it really was slavery. Imprisonment to ensure services. He was willing to die to keep her free- it is very Old School Hollywood Dashing Rogue of him, and again, I love it ❤️
Omg- Flynn Rider. Errol Flynn. I am a dummy. How did I not make that connection before?!
The king had the grief scene, and the Queen greeted her first. That feels so different from other movies.
They didn’t make her a carbon copy- Rapunzel was clearly her kid, but a younger version with a different chin. The designers put in work, and they have my respect.
That chuckle is the only spoken line the King has. Interesting.
The king is so soft. Big cuddly frame, soft pull into the hug, willing to immediately embrace the young man who brought her home as well. Who designed these men???
“I want something that I want” is currently the theme for my D&D character, and I suddenly am understanding it in the context of this movie. When I first heard it, I thought it was selfish, and it didn’t make sense to me. No- it’s not.
She has never been allowed anything of her own. He has literally had to steal to not starve. This is the feeling of being allowed to want for the first time. No wonder he was so good at helping her through things. It was probably very similar feeling when he first left the Orphanage. 🥹❤️
I imagine this song hit pretty hard for some scared and controlled kids out there. 🎶 Honestly, this whole movie was such a strong example of manipulative abuse, and I am so happy it exists. They clearly put in the work to make it truthful, and it must have helped so many people realize what was going on in their own life. I think every creative hopes to tell a story that connects with people like that.
Anyways, hoped you enjoyed my romp through a wonderful film 😁

THE MARVELS
Hello
I've just seen The Marvels and what a pleasure to see Brie Larson as Captain Marvel again. Some scenes are just too funny. As for Captain Marvel, in this film we discover her arrogance which leads her to act impulsively and her actions cause disasters. A Captain Marvel who doesn't want to team up with anyone ends up accepting these 2 acolytes whose sole aim is to help her and save the world.
Young actress Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan Miss Marvel) is destined for a promising career, such is her talent.
It's true that The Marvels takes up the characters from the series and heralds the arrival of the new Avengers (new actors, new team) as well as the return of the X MEN.
Of course, the film attracted negative reviews and was accused of being "woke", and some were already predicting it as a huge cinematic flop. But it doesn't matter, mentalities have to change. Headlining 3 female superheroes from different cultures is a big step in the film industry. It will always upset some people in this world.
But at the dawn of the 22nd century, in a society where technology is evolving too fast, it's time for human values and mentalities to evolve. I hope that more films in the future will feature female characters as protagonists.
I'm going to see it again, but in original version, to hear Brie Larson sing.

I promised my dad I wouldn’t analyse Kung Fu Panda 4 when I went to see it with my little cousins… however…
Here’s my simple thoughts on Kung Fu Panda 4! (Spoilers)
- Po’s dads are gay married (they were my favourite part)
- I haven’t seen Kung Fu Panda 3 so I don’t know what happened with Po’s dad
- I really liked the simple messaging, maybe I’ve been watching a lot of complex stuff where all the messages are underneath the characters but I enjoyed the simple message that was carried throughout the story
- I like how it shows each character deal with change, which was the main theme of the movie. They’re all stuck in their own ruts that are all difficult to break. Po doesn’t want to become a mentor, Zhen doesn’t want to leave her toxic parental figure, and the Chameleon has been driven all her life by the same thing.
- The chameleon was fricken awesome in her regular form and honestly the most terrifying like that. Though I do like her Tai Lung, mangled, and Po forms. Really good cartoon villain imo
- the fact Zhen got to defeat her toxic parental figure was good, it really showed the growth she was able to achieve by releasing the rules back at Chameleon. It also showed Po’s growth by allowing another to be in the spotlight
- is Tai Lung voiced by the same guy who does Viggo in the how to train your dragon show? Oh nvm it’s actually.. ALFRED MOLINA?!?
- reminded me of Scott Pilgrim with the Po vs. Po
- thought they were gonna have a Doctor Sleep ghost attack moment
- JACK BLACK SINGING FOR THE END CREDITS WIN
Best line goes to: “shut up Larry”
I’d like if there was another movie for it to follow Zhen but honestly that would probably be better as a show so they could rename it
Some parts were slow and the backstory reveals were a little rushed but pretty fun to see with family

Gonna-Try-To-Stay-As-Spoiler-Free-As-I-Can Reaction to Mutant Mayhem (Very SLIGHT Spoilers)
THE SOUNDTRACK I am legitimately in love. May be the best movie soundtrack I've listened to in a long time.
Voice casting was on point. Who can't love Jackie Chan as Master Splinter?
This Master Splinter has THE BEST ears. Omg, sooooo cute.
A+ origin story retelling. "I was an old rat, so I became an older rat. You were young turtles, so you stayed baby turtle things. When you think about it, that really makes the most sense." lmaooooooooo
Absolutely dug all the references to previous TMNT iterations! I have a feeling I could watch this movie 10 times and still find new ones.
Saw the Laird Pizza reference. Not sure if there wasn't an Eastman reference or if I just missed it. (EDIT: Thanks, notes! I did miss it!)
This...may be my favorite April O'Neil, actually. She was amazing.
Super into female Leatherhead, actually.
Splinter, I'm with your sons. THAT IS DISGUSTING. BLECH. I'm happy for you, but BLECH.
The big bummer about the movie is that part of the reason I love TMNT is because there really is no romantic content and when there has been romantic implications, they have been quiet and subtle. This is a great franchise for aroaces like me. ...Except for this movie.
The movie is listed as comedy but OMG it should be listed as heartbreaking. So much sadness and angst throughout. cry.jpg I was looking for happy feels, dang it!
I really think this movie is gonna inspire a ton of fanfic, and I am PUMPED for that.
Donnie's a massive fanboy, and I am LIVING for it.
So yeah. I loved it. I tend to favor the more serious versions of TMNT, so this doesn't take my top slot, but it's a very solid showing. I absolutely adore how the kids in the audience reacted to it. TMNT is for them, and it was great to see them loving it. I saw regular, but now I'm kinda tempted to go back and see how it is in 3D. The animation was super cool, so I imagine 3D was actually pretty fun.

Hello tumblr are we ready to talk about how ace-coded Barbie was in the Barbie movie??
I really read her as aro/ace and Ken as allo. Their interpersonal conflict of Ken expecting a romantic relationship with her while Barbie has no interest whatsoever is really ace-themed. I'd even go so far as to say that Barbie didn't even consider a romantic relationship with Ken as a possibility. And like, what ace person hasn't been completely oblivious to their friend having a crush on them?
I mean "where I see love, she sees a friend" ?? Dude! She's aro/ace, get over yourself! (no offence to Ken, I loved his character, he's just being an incel)
I could write an essay on this. Once I see the movie again I probably will. Someone PLEASE talk to me about this.

Just watched the Barbieheimer double feature. And weirdly enough both have the horse as a Leitmotiv for the male protagonist representing freedom.

So, I just watched this one guy do a reaction to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and it made me kinda mad...
So, I had fast forwarded to the club scene.
To sum up the scene for those who haven't watched this movie, Roman (the main villain) is pissed off in his club and he hears a girl named Erika laughing with her friends and he assumes that she is laughing at him and his right hand man/boyfriend Victor even affirms this bc Victor wants some entertainment. So, Roman yells at her, forces her to stand on a table and dance, then hands a knife to one of her guy friends and screams at him to cut her dress off which he does and Erika is crying as this is happening while Victor is laughing his ass off. Black Canary (one of the main girls and a singer in Roman's club/his driver) is watching this scene unfold and tries to leave but Roman grabs her, kinda threatens her by saying shit like "You wouldn't betray me... Would you?", and forces her to dance with him. This scene was really fucking scary especially when I first watched it.
But when the guy got to that point in the movie he just said "Come on I thought he was gonna kill someone. He's not even that scary". Which like... How the fuck can you watch this scene and not find Roman scary? Even if he doesn't kill/physically hurt someone in this scene the tension is enough to make it pretty fucking terrifying.
And I don't know it just pisses me off when I see a guy watching a scene where a woman is being threatened, violated and humiliated and he basically says "it's not even that bad. He could've done a lot worse".
And even ignoring that, "He's not even that scary"... Um was his intro scene where he cuts off a girl's parents' faces, tells the girl that he's gonna let her go, but then changes his mind after seeing a snot bubble on her face and cuts off her face anyway also not scary enough for you?

Fairness in Snow White and the Huntsman
I recently rewatched the movie Snow White and the Huntsman, and when I tell you my brain was spinning after watching this show, I mean it was going faster than helicopter blades on a well-oiled merry-go-round. I felt so intrigued by the movie and couldn't get it out of my head. So here is an informal, possibly incoherent, short essay on the role beauty/purity plays in "fairness" in Snow White and The Huntsman 2012.
In Snow White and The Huntsman, we learn that what is "done by the fairest blood" can also be "undone by the fairest blood." Which draws an interesting parallel in the movie. If both the evil queen Ravenna and Snow white are equally fair despite their opposite natures, then how are they to be compared or their motives interpreted? Ravenna is the fairest of them all through her strengths in beauty and power. To Ravenna, beauty is a weapon to be wielded at all costs and her strengths come to be taken by force as her ambitions consume her. The price of such things is mutual destruction of Ravenna's beauty and the death of the land.
Snow White is the fairest of them all through her beauty and purity of heart. She comes by both naturally, and from her goodness has the power to restore life. However, as her purpose as hero becomes more prevalent, we see that life also comes at a cost. Snow White can only restore life to the kingdom and retake the throne if sacrifices are made, thus her morals are compromised in choosing to murder the Queen and let others suffer for her cause. Despite this, however, she understands the importance of her power and yields to it. Snow white even goes as far as declaring to her people before the war, "I will be your weapon!"
This not only reflects the Queen's sentiments on beauty being a weapon but deepens beauty's significance in the story. Of course, war leads to death and destruction. So, how is "fairness" in these characters to be judged?
Upon reflection we find that the Ravenna and Snow White mirror each other (pun intended) as two women seeking justice for what was done to them in the past. Ravenna's past reveals her to be a victim of war and violence. She was taken as a young girl after her village was pillaged by a less-than-honorable king. The result of this was her last memory being of her mother, who whispered to her that her beauty would be her power, her weapon, and that she must wield it to survive. Ravenna kidnapped and traumatized, then loses her mother to war.
From that moment, Ravenna knew to protect herself from the evils of man, and to protect her brother (who ironically becomes the perfect likeness to that kind of man but that's a whole different essay) she will have to take beauty and life from others to ensure her own survival. Essentially, she becomes death to preserve her own life. However, this source is exhaustible. She can always take, but the result is the devastation of the land and people who sustain her. Despite knowing this, she is confident that misery and death is what the people deserve and insists on delivering "justice" for what was done to her ages ago. Therefore, she shows no remorse for her actions. These qualities, in turn, are seen in all those she keeps close to her, breeding mistrust, greed, and evil everywhere she goes.
Snow White had a similar event happen in her upbringing, as her mother and father were also taken from her at an early age due to war and darkness. However, because Snow White was raised with love and shown protection, different values were instilled in her. Being often told that it was not only her face that was fair, but her heart and soul, Snow White grew to understand that "purity" or "beauty" of soul is what strengthened her and others. This minor detail is what becomes pivotal to Snow White as a hero and competitor to the queen.
Even when Ravenna comes to her kingdom, murders her father, takes Snow White prisoner, and ravages the land, Snow White's heart remains strong in what is just and what is not. Her fairness, compassion, cleverness, and her beauty are what help her survive being hunted by the queen and gives her allies. However, it is not the expendable physical source of beauty that gives Snow White power, it is the giving of its intangible essence that creates life. Snow White agrees to sacrifice her life in pursuit of the Queen, not only to avenge her father and kingdom, but in the hopes of preserving life for those around her. Her life breeds more life, just as her goodness inspires goodness in others. This is what makes her heart the fairest in the land and the object of Ravenna's greed. Without Snow White's heart, the evil queen will burn out, but with her purity, she may be sustained forever. However, it is Snow White's heart that also leads to Ravenna's downfall in a different way.
Even with Ravenna's power and the fear she has instilled in the people, she cannot sustain her own protection forever based on being beautiful; A detail that the audience sees abandon her as she becomes more absorbed by fear and greed. Meanwhile, Snow White survives her curse and comes back to life through the power of love. Her beauty remains untouched despite having been tested repeatedly. In her resurrection we see that Snow White will always win against all odds, if she stays "true."  But has not Ravenna also stayed "true" to her similar goal? Why does she fail after being in power for so long now that Snow White has risen to challenge her?
To answer these, we must fast-forward to the end of the movie. When Ravenna and Snow-White face each other in the mirror room we see Snow White stab the queen in the heart (as foreshadowed in the beginning by the Huntsman and don't even get me started on the amazing plot devices in this show). At the climax of this scene, just before the Queen dies at the base of the mirror hanging on the wall, Snow White says to Ravenna, "You can never have my heart." This completes the movie's premise that one fair heart will be the end of another, and we see how Snow White's victory seems destined to be. While the Queen pursued Snow White's heart to sustain her need for vengeance and power, Snow White pursued Ravenna's for justice and peace. Both things will always exist side by side, however, we see that one may never wholly possess the other.
The entire movie's significance is held in the line: "You can never have my heart" and is the answer to all previous questions. Snow White is not only taking back power from Ravenna physically by saying this, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Her compassion is also seen at its full strength at this moment despite its inherent violence as she explains, in a way, to Ravenna why she was always going to fail. Ravenna could have been good... she chose not to be. Snow White Is evidence of that.
In terms of morality, this line communicates that it is impossible for Ravenna to have Snow White's heart, because she does not have her goodness. Purity is the defining factor of justice in this movie. Despite both having parallel ambitions, it is Snow White who can have Ravenna's heart physically and yet chooses not to emblematically. Ravenna cannot say the same. Due to her innate greed, the Queen can never have Snow White's heart in the figurative sense, and therefore fails to attain it in every other sense. And, although Snow White still has blood on her hands, and has taken life to preserve it, she does not fall victim to power. Instead, she redistributes power back to the people who made both characters' stories possible to begin with and takes a position of leadership choosing to govern with "fairness" and compassion.
Overall, an exceptional theme in the show I've never noticed before. It was a pleasure to think about the different intricacies of the writing and enjoy how they unraveled for me as the audience. If you haven't seen this movie, I would recommend it. Take time to think about the symbolism in the show and enjoy its hidden meanings. There may be more than you think! There definitely were for me.

Why are Wonka's chocolates so good???
I finally got a chance to see the Wonka movie. I honestly did not know what to expect. I thought it would be similar to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. But it was different.
Wonka had a journey ahead of him. His dream! He set out to bring the best feel good chocolates anyone has ever had! He was destined to share this with others. And they could not get enough of Wonka's chocolates.
Wonka's mom was the inspiration of his chocolate making. He kept going what his mother started. He vowed to bring the people the best chocolate they ever had. His chocolates were magical! They made you feel good! Instant satisfaction. Wonka's chocolates did something magical, the unimaginable! Wonka's chocolate store/factory was the most beautiful place in town. Very magical and a place where everyone had fun.
Till the bad guys came long. Till trouble came his way. They did not like the competition. UGHHH - y'all know it was bound to happen. There's always the bad guys in the story. BUT--- Wonka met a very special girl - Noodles who believed in Wonka and she also had a special story. They helped each other(loved this so much)
Together - they worked to keep selling Wonka's chocolates, all while keeping the competition on a wild goose chase around town. hahaha
Final thoughts:
This movie just makes you feel good. Willy Wonka is kind, and makes you feel special. This movie has something for everyone to enjoy! I was skeptical when the movie first started, but as the movie moved along, the story got better. To be perfectly honest, I really want to try Wonka's chocolates(not kidding-lol). The way his chocolates made everyone feel was something special! I definitely recommend this movie. Go see it!!!
3.5/5 - but I feel like it's really 4/5

#TheMarvels  was a blast. I agree w/ everyone that the villain was underwhelming, but the cast chemistry, the action and humor was top notch.
I loved Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris but yes…THE MVP of The Marvels  is Iman Vellani. She is the breath of fresh air that is needed in the MCU.
Also…there is a needle drop in this movie that is PERFECT and had my audience losing it because it was so funny.
