The abyss
Tumblr media
Exclusive, first images from the Swedish disaster movie "The Abyss"
Tumblr media
Moviezine meets director Richard Holm in the editing room: "It's incredible that we get to do something like this"
Tumblr media
It's cockily called Sweden's first real disaster movie. This autumn we'll get to see if the budget of 90 million kr and an ambitious vision from an experienced action movie director can shake up the Swedish movie industry and the audience.
Moviezine visited SF studios where director Richard Holm is in the middle of the editing process of the special effects heavy movie "The Abyss". He explains how he got the idea for the movie. "SF called me and asked "can't we make a disaster movie" so I said "well, we have Kiruna! They are moving the whole city because it's too close to the mine. So the pitch became "what if you don't movie it before the mine collapses?"
Tumblr media
A clear concept that has true elements triggered my fantasy, Holm says.
There are collapses every once in a while. There are over a hundred small earthquakes of at least 2,5 on the Ritcher scale. And all you need as a creator is a what if. What if one of these quakes eould uncover an unknown fault under the city.
In addition the playfield is fun since you are moving a whole city. Not alot of people know that. So you are presenting a background story like with "the wave"
Tumblr media
The Norwegian disaster movies the wave, the quake and the tunnel has undoubtedly inspired the abyss.
The first clip we are allowed to watch points towards an ambitious Scandinavian movie.
The audience will perhaps be more used to see the white House blow up or the streets of New York get destroyed but for the first time the disaster genre has reached a swedish town.
Tumblr media
Family drama in the center
Richard Holm explains that he wrote the script with his oldest son Robin which made the experience even more special and personal. He also talks about the big budget of 90 million. "So we are not just tearing down a light post and that's it"
Who does Tuva Novotny play?
When we began our resarch we quickly came across the mountain mechanics, reaponsible for the security in the mine. We read about female mechanics working in the mine and that inspired the character Frigga.
Tumblr media
Frigga lives in Kiruna and has worked in the mine her whole life. She lost her dad in a mining accident where an explosion went wrong. It has made her determined to never let it happen again. She's merciless about the security. She's also married to the manager of the mine, Tage (Peter Franzen) and they have different interests. He doesn't want her to close the mine. He wants to keep production running.
Currently Frigga and Tage are in the middle of a divorce and she has found a new man. In the beginning of the movie Dabir (Kardo Razzazi) shows up and we learn that she has not yet signed the papers for the divorce like she promised. The hopes are that the family drama will be just as heartfelt as the disaster.
Just like with the movie "Titanic" we wanted to find a drama that is stronger than the disaster. So that you care for he characters when everything goes down.
Tumblr media
Frigga and Tage also have two children, Simon and Mika who are tired of their parents. In the beginning of the movie they are about to celebrate Simon’s birthday but he is missing. Noone knows where he is. But Frigga and Tage have to leave for the mine where there's been an alarm set off.
They find the fualt but everything collapses and they can't warn anyone about what's going to happen. That's the beginning of the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we are not making a Hollywood movie in Hollywood manner.
You've made movies like Johan Falk that are very popular. Yet there has not been many swedish action movies after that. Why do you think that is?
because there's no budged not experience. But thanks to the technology we will see more and more of that in Sweden. Norway hss done several. And we also need to find stories that are rooted in our own culture. We are not making a Hollywood movie in Hollywood manner.
What is fun is that we have manged to keep it somewhat realistic. You want to feel "could this happen" it feels nerve-racking.
I think it is the reason why we are making this movie. We found a local story that won't feel fake.
And I need to ask about the title. You realise that James Cameron already made a movie with that name?
Haha, but it's one of his leadt famous movies. I don't even think it's on blu-ray. But of course we knew. There were some alternatives but the abyss is a very fitting name. I liked Cameron's but I think mostly older people have seen that movie.
The cast also consists of Felicia Maxime, Edvin Ryding, Göran Gillinger and Angela Kovac

Just got some new s2 "Rings of Power" news and spoilers from one of the directors Charlotte Brändström as she did a new interview in Sweden!!! :D Fellowship of Fans translated it into English and I'll put the spoilerly parts behind a cut but tagging characters she's likely talking about. She did confirm she directed episodes 1, 3, 7, and 8 of season 2. Link here for her interview and now onto the spoilers:
Here's the translated part about "Rings of Power":
”I would probably say that the last two [episodes] are a bit more connected, at least time wise, I must say. And there I had a giant battle again, towards the end of the seventh episode. The first episode is a little more stand-alone. I directed the first and third and the seventh and eighth. The plot in the first and third builds up what is to happen and is a bit more self-contained, but there is a lot going on in the seventh and eighth episodes. It's a very explosive end to the season, Brändström tells MovieZine.”
So from this too it seems to confirm the season premiere is Sauron centric and likely has flashbacks as that would work as a standalone episode!!! :D There had been speculation about this since the finale aired as Charlie Vickers said he had been filming some flashback scenes. This will be really cool to see more of Sauron's past and similar to how Galadriel had her own part of the prologue in season 1.
Some fans were worried seeing this as it might be only a bit of the main timeline in the premiere, but remember that Amazon always puts up at least the first 2 episodes when one of their shows premieres so we will have at least 2 to watch with the 2nd being the main storylines of the season.
Then this also seems to confirm the 2 episode battle is indeed episodes 7 and 8/the finale. Very curious what "explosive end" means and even more excited for this season!!! :D

'Now in theaters, "All of Us Strangers" received top ratings from MovieZine. But don't just rely on us. We collected an impression from other media, for an honest overall picture.
"All of Us Strangers" is the latest film from British filmmaker Andrew Haigh ("Weekend", "Looking"). It is based on the fairly short novel "Strangers", by the Japanese author Taichi Yamada , but Haigh has used the original more as a road map and very much made the film something very special. In the film, Andrew Scott ("Fleabag", "Sherlock") plays Adam, a lonely screenwriter who begins a flirtation with a neighbor (Paul Mescal, from among others "Aftersun" and the upcoming "Gladiator 2"). In the same vein, he has started meeting his parents again. The strange thing is that they seem to be as old as Adam - or even younger. Could it have something to do with them being dead for many years? "All of Us Strangers" is a movie that leaves you with more theories than straight answers, but that's one of the things that makes it such a strong and interesting experience.
MovieZine's reviewer Jonna Vanhatalo gave "All of Us Strangers" a full thumbs up, five out of a possible five, praising, among other things, the final scene as "the most heartbreaking and beautiful I've ever seen." But one vote no vote, so we've checked around what our colleagues in the industry thought of the film and it turns out there is some consensus. Here we have collected a selection of other opinions about "All of Us Strangers":
Stefan Hedmark for Aftonbladet , 4 of 5: "Mainly it's about mental illness, loneliness and your relationship with mom and dad. Haigh knows how to find a deeply moving intimacy among his characters." Kerstin Gezelis for Dagens Nyheter, 4 of 5:
"A love story and ghost story in one, captured in color symbolism, reflections, touches and finely calibrated shifts in light, eyes and gazes between two high-intensity actors." Karoline Eriksson for Svenska Dagbladet , 5 of 6: "Andrew Haigh does not dwell on pain points that touch the less flattering sides of the human being, and become especially strong precisely because they are so universal."
Joakim Silverdal for Sveriges Radio , 4 of 5: "All the actors hit the spot, too: Andrew Scott in the title role with his hesitant smiles and eyes that couldn't get any closer to breaking point. Claire Foy and Jamie Bell are brilliant as the parents, and Paul Mescal is nothing but melting as the sad hunk." Caroline Hainers for Sweden's Television , 4 of 5:
"The word 'sensual' often feels stale, but with a film as sensual as this, it must be brought out, along with a quiet thought about how liberating it is to see beautifully realistic sex scenes with groping, fumbling and sudden shyness." Alexander Kardelo for QX , 5 out of 5: "The film undeniably evokes many feelings and thoughts – about what it means to live as a gay man today, about prejudice, love, security and sadness. And it is heartbreaking like few."
"All of Us Strangers" is very current in Swedish cinemas, so it is a perfect opportunity to support an original story without superheroes.'
