Tips for living alone for the first time
I moved out a year ago and thought it'd be cool to share what I've learned so you don't have to suffer as much :,)
Decide a day to sit down and pay all bills and everyone
Know and accept you won't get your initial budget right, it took me a year
Google is your friend, but people are better.
Especially when looking for cheap markets and places to eat, or safe streets to walk around, people know more than google.
4. Speaking of cheap markets... get those (free) memberships for discounts. But most importantly, dowload and check every supermarket app and search for the cheapest one.
5. When looking for a place to live, try to speak with people who live there and check google maps reviews and your countrys site for custumers complaints.
6. You likely don't need to clean as often as your family told you, but cleaning your place will make you feel better. And you gotta clean the fridge. And hair. So much hair.
7. If you don't have a fridge, just a small cooler, check if the building has a common fridge/kitchen and Don't. Be. Shy to use it please.
I recommend not moving into a place without a fridge if you don't plan on eating out or going to the market every two days.
8. Carry your documents with you, or write them down or make a copy. I recommend not carrying the original since if you lose it/get mugged it's a pain in the ass to get it fixed.
9. Cook as much as you can in one go, but don't overwhelm yourself. Get those washed vegetables and cut onions, do what you need so you don't end up exhausted and crying on the floor... not that I've ever done that myself...
10. It's gonna feel hard at times and that's ok! The freedom is worth it, and after a year I'm really happy with all the progress I've made
11. Avoid pets, especially in a scenario that you're moving around or in a small studio or with financial difficulties (this can change from ppl to ppl etc)
12. Join or make a chat group with everyone in the building, without the sindicate so y'all can be honest about complains and create a single, solid complaint before showing it to the sindicate. (apartment manager? syndic? assignee? idk, whoever fixes things)
That's all I can remember for now, feel free to ad or correct me if you like :)

Moving advice- Craigslist hilariously and also Facebook marketplace! Start looking at things now you need to get like a couch etc. and start liking those things to train your algorithm on Facebook. Especially anything that looks likes something you would ultimately want to buy or has the search phrase etc. rich people get rid of great quality shit for free even all the time take advantage! For training your algorithm you can also just open up the distance parameters to the whole country just so it starts picking up good stuff. That way when you’re ready to buy you find something good. And don’t rush into buying stuff because you feel you need to have a couch or chair or side tables to feel independent or adult etc. wait and buy pieces you really like ans would want to keep. They’ll come to you. Also hit up good will or other thrifts or estate sales, yard sales, and even local online auctions for especially kitchen stuff, dishes and cups etc. so many people need to clean out their parents homes when they pass and get rid of normal every day stuff we use but would be so expensive to buy new. Online auctions that are local can be an amazing resource for that too. You can use liveauctioneers and search locally. You can get really great quality furniture that isn’t worth it to people to pay to ship but you’re local you can just go pick up. I got two custom designer benches once for $10 total at a place I only had to drive twenty minutes to to pick up. Or if in all your searching you find something you love that’s not local try uship to see how much it would cost to ship. It ends up being more affordable than you think . And meal prep. Batch cook things. I love to roast a pan of vetables weekly and make a protein that I can add things to during the week. So like simply seasoning chicken with just salt pepper garlic and onion powder and then like oregano or Italian seasoning well I can use that in pretty much any recipe. Can add paprika cumin etc make it into Mexican whatever. Or can just add it to a salad. Pick a day you have off and just get into a routine of spending an hour or two in the kitchen where you prep things for the week even if it’s whole meals you then put in fridge or even freeze. Make multiples of things you can freezer and have later. Especially they’re annoying to make lol. It feels like a lot of time at first but you make it fun. Put on a show or podcast and it saves you so much time during the week and also mental energy! Also ends up saving so much energy when you have already prepared food at home
AHHH thank you bestie!! i was already ready to shop on Facebook and Craigslist and thrift for furniture too! luckily i have a few items (tables and stands) from the apartment i can start out with so im bit totally bare bones moving

My hot girl brain doesn’t want to prepare to move across the state so I need to trick myself into being interested in things like packing and moving. So far I’ve used
1) the game Unpacking. Very helpful for motivating myself to unpack college stuff, but I need the opposite kind of game to motivate myself to pack.
2) Pinterest, making mental plans and arranging my bedroom and living room in my mind. Has been helpful to buy things I’ll need like a desk and bed frame.
3) KonMari method. Helpful for motivating me to clean out my clothes but not much else.
If anyone has any suggestions ways to gamify or trick my brain into hyperfixating on packing/organizing, please drop it in the notes, I would love any advice from my fellow ND folks.

Moving in tips learned the hard way
If you’re getting a uhaul, get the biggest one you can find. The fewer trips the better
Get more boxes than you think you need. Then triple that amount.
Pack an essentials bag so you’re not digging through random boxes trying to find the one thing you need
If you’re moving locally, give yourself weeks to move.
Just hire movers. They’re pricy, but save you so much exhaustion.

15 Tips To Packing More Efficiently For Your Next Move
Tumblr media
Packing your things can seem like a daunting task. We always have a lot more things than we think we do, and packing always takes much longer than we expected it to.
To help you plan and approach your big move, here are 15 tips for packing your home more efficiently. Hopefully they will help you save time and avoid damage to your things during your next home move.
1. Decide Whether to go Pro or Pack Yourself
Tumblr media
Packing your house can seem a daunting task, so if you don’t think you can get it done in time or would just prefer to leave it to the experts, consider hiring professional packers to pack your home for you.
If you are hiring a professional moving company to move your items, it may be worth finding out how much extra it will be to pack your items as well.
Hiring professional packers can save a lot of time and stress. Professional packers will have quality boxes that are of a uniform size, which means they will stack better in the moving truck. They will know how to pack items efficiently to fill the boxes completely, as well as ensuring that everything is safely packed to avoid any damages to your things.
Yet, packing yourself will save you money. So it’s worth weighing up to decide on which avenue is best for you and your whānau.
2. Use a Packing List
Tumblr media
So you’ve decided to pack your things yourself. The first step now is to get a packing checklist to help you plan your move.
A packing checklist will help you remember all the things you need to pack, some time frames around packing your items, as well as things you cannot pack.
Some moving companies will provide you a packing checklist when you hire them for your home move. If you are moving yourself, check online for a packing checklist that you can download such as this one.
3. Buy Your Packing Kit
Tumblr media
The next step to packing your home is to buy your packing kit.
A packing kit consists of all the things you need to pack up your home. Here are some items you will likely need in your packing kit, based on an average 3 bedroom house.
20 boxes – mixture of 10 small boxes, 10 large boxes
1 tape dispenser
2 tape rolls
1 roll of bubble wrap
50 newsprint sheets
1 permanent marker pen

How Soon Should You Change Your Address When Moving?
Do you plan on changing your mailing address soon? In addition to the obvious, such as obtaining boxes and packing materials, renting a truck, or hiring professional movers, you will also need to inform the relevant people and places that you will be relocating. It's better to have things taken care of sooner rather than later to avoid future hassles like late payments or service disruptions. Finance gurus
You must inform both the state and federal governments of your change of residence for tax purposes. The Internal Revenue Service can be notified of your address change in a number of different ways. Before sending anything, phone them up and provide them your full name, date of birth, SSN (or ITIN or EIN), and both your old and new addresses. An alternative is to submit a written declaration to the IRS that includes the information above and is signed by you.
How successful have you found the following methods? Seek advice from your accountant. Go to your state's government website and look for contact information for the tax department there. For the most part, you can take care of this electronically or at least get your hands on the necessary forms to fill out and submit to the state tax authorities, with no need to physically visit their office.
Centralized Insurance Registry
If you receive Social Security payments, you must notify the SSA. To change your address, either log in to your My SSA Account, click on your profile, and select "Update Contact Information," or contact the SSA at (800) 772-1213 and provide the new address and the date you'd want it to take effect.
Create one quickly and easily by entering the correct address if you don't already have one. If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or do not have a U.S. mailing address, please contact the aforementioned number or your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.
Department of Transportation
If you are moving to a new state, you will need to file the appropriate change of address documentation before you can begin establishing yourself there. The automobile registration and driver's license, if they contain addresses, are included. Several of our manuals are available to serve as resources for this process. Whether you're relocating across the country or just across the street, we can help.
gas and power companies
If you want to avoid being cold or in the dark for a day or more after relocating, this is a chore you should do as soon as you have a firm grasp on your new address and moving date. You should schedule the transfer of your power such that it is turned off at your current location at the end of moving day and that service at your new address begins either the morning of your move-in date or the evening before. This is not an effective method for navigating in the dark.
Ease the Process
If you want to keep receiving mail after the post office stops forwarding it, you should start notifying those who send it to you at least two weeks before you move. If you have a long list of people and organizations to contact, schedule an hour or two a day to perform the work. In order to save time, you should switch your phone number before informing anyone of your new residence. Most places you do business with will also require your new phone number. If you have misplaced it, you'll need to get in touch with them again.
Several methods exist for getting the message out. There are usually blanks on bills and statements where you may update personal details like your address or preferred method of contact. You may wish to send an email to your employer or visit the human resources office to confirm that you will continue to get your W-2s and that all-important paycheck on time. Personalized cards, available at most stationery shops, are a great way to let loved ones know about your move and add a touch of warmth to the announcement. Also, the change of address cards provided by the post office make it easy for everyone else on your list to keep up with the move.
Never Forget the Inconspicuous
When thinking about a change of address, your mail is often the first item to pop into your head. You'll also need to modify your address in some less obvious places: If you use a return address stamp while sending mail, you need to get a new one. It is also important to reprint the return address labels.
Make sure your pet and luggage don't go missing. Collars and tags should have their addresses changed to reflect your new location. To maintain contact with your child's school, it is important to ensure your contact information is up to date in the school's directory. If you run a home company, you know how important it is to make every transaction. Immediately after relocating, you should change your address on your official stationery, business cards, bank checks, website, and directories. It's possible that moving will take a lot of time and cause of stress of moving process. Smile, visualize your future home, and remind yourself that this chaotic period will soon be over.

Does anyone know a good reliable way to calculate how much it would cost to move? I found an online calculator that helps calculate it, but any tips? Like how to find an apartment, how to find a job in the area, how should I plan a move when I have a cat I’ll be bringing. This is all new to me, and I’m doing my own research but any sort of tips or tricks help.

I've never seen this tip in moving guides but my partner has done this for every move and it has worked.
If you have a ton of devices or whatnot that will need to connect to wifi when you move, set your new wifi name and password to what it was in the old place. Your stuff will connect automatically and it will save time in setting stuff up. This especially helps if you have smart home devices. You might need to adjust rooms and scenes, but you don't have to hook every single light bulb up.
This saved me so much headache and time.
