I think the difference between Angel's and Husk's chains is interesting to point out and discuss.

Both the chains, in a way, make aesthetic sense for their masters. But I'm curious if there's something deeper, here:

Angel's chains are smokey and a bit "loose". He is able to struggle against them. He also explicitly points out that there is a small loophole in his contract: Valentino can do whatever he wants to him as long as he's in the studio.

We don't know many details of Husk's contract, but we do know that Alastor is a master dealmaker. A master dealmaker would be very familiar with loopholes, and very skilled at making contracts that have highly specific wording, and are impossible to break. I like to think this concept manifests physically in how thick and impossible-to-break Husk's chains appear.

If this IS how magic chains work in the lore, then that would be cause for another interesting discussion:

We know Alastor himself also has a contract, and answers to a so-far unknown character. Alastor has a small, panicked line about how "surely" his contract must "have a backdoor." Alastor, master of making deals, cannot see any loopholes in his OWN contract?

Not only does this imply that his owner is more powerful than him and good at making deals..... but it also brings up an interesting question. What could Alastor be SO desperate to sell his soul for, that he willingly signed a contract that he saw NO loopholes out of?

Super random thought I just had, but given how Helluva Boss implied Heaven has unreasonably high standards for humans to be considered innocent souls, I can't help but think about all the implications this brings to Vaggie's character.

Objectively speaking from what we got in the pilot but could be changed in the show proper, Vaggie really doesn't seem like sinner material. Even in her worst moments, with her short temper and aggressive, distrustful attitude, it all comes from a place of love and care towards Charlie.

She knows how much the hotel means to Charlie, and how unrealistic it is to rehabilitate sinners, but she remains endlessly loyal even when her girlfriend disregarding all common sense does them little favours. And considering the very people Charlie's trying to help/ally herself with are irresponsible or untrustworthy and even dangerous as well, Vaggie has every reason to be snappy at Angel Dust and Alastor.

Overall, of the characters introduced so far, Vaggie is probably the most decent person around after Charlie...yet she is in Hell.

And I was thinking this could either be used to really hammer it in just how ridiculously high Heaven's expectations are and that Charlie really has her work cut out for her if she wants her dream to come true...

...or it could take a twisted turn and be revealed that the reason Vaggie is in Hell and missing an eye is because she lost it while fighting, and killing, her abuser (as that is realistically the only way I could see Vaggie killing someone and would also serve to explain her inherent distrust in men).

After all, Mrs Mayberry killing her husband for adultery and still being sent to Hell proves murder is considered as far worse than any personal grievance the sinner might have undergone in order to commit homicide. So it wouldn't be far-fetched to believe Vaggie ended up in Hell for killing someone, even if it was ultimately in self-defence.

• BUT, it’s also giving Husk “waiting by an open door” at the hotel’s bar alone fooling himself that Angel will “walk right in” and unwind with him at his bar like old times, as Husk stares forlorn into a drink with another he’s made beside him out of habit.

• It’s giving Husk seeing the ghosts of him and Angel around him like snapshots in time - angry, then wistful, then content, then irritated again. Closing his eyes but Angel is “…still there.”

• It’s giving Husk clawing his head at the memories so blissful yet almost painful to witness, as he slowly begins to realise what the hollowness he’s feeling actually is.

• It’s giving Husk slowly filling with understanding, warmth and vigour, embracing this newfound discovery as he hops over the bar and moves through the hotel with a pace we’ve never seen before towards the roof. He has to see the sky. He has to get as close to it as his chains permit to. To see the faint pearly gates of heaven. To…make use of the small time he has left. Because even though Husk knows Angel has “flown far beyond” his “reach…he’s never out of sight.”

• It’s giving Husk atop the hotel with his face dropping slightly as he sees Angel “…fade from view”, thinking “…of what might have been” if he hadn’t “realised the truth too late.”

• It’s giving Husk then braving a sad smile with hand outstretched to the sky where a phantom Angel rests his cheek against Husk’s palm, and they share a tender dance akin to Loser, Baby with a twirl and dip. And “As the long dark nights draw in”, Husk accepts his feelings, that Angel will always “be part of everything” he is…

…as he sings FOR EVERMORE atop the highest peak of the hotel.

For, oh, how lovely it was - albeit short - to have gained the ability to love again, than to have never regained it at all…
