Helloo! Good evening! (It's evening in my country 😁)
Can you suggest me some good bromance dramas with crime and investigation as main genre?
I watched S.C.I Mystery, Killer and Healer, The Devil Judge, Under the Skin and Sleuth of ming dynasty.
Can you suggest me some good bromance dramas? Chinese dramas are more preferred. But korean ones are also fine.
Thank you!
Have a nice day! 😊❤️
Hello! Oh, you absolutely came to the right blog about this particular question, as crime dramas are what I mainly watch!
As I can see, you've watched pretty much all the dramas that I would recommend for good bromance and good crime dramas. But I do have some others to recommend.
Cdramas
Master, Wait a Moment is a good one, though it is subbed by MangoTV so the subs are kinda...iffy. But if you can watch it without subs, then you should be golden. Love the bromance and it has a good overarching case, which we like. You will find one of the female love interests insufferable and unfortunately, that's the only downside but it's okay, you can just skip over her scenes if you really can't stand her.
Another good one is Psych-Hunter. Again, you will find the female lead insufferable (if you took her out the drama would still literally be the same, just minus all the dumb romance plot they had to throw in to pass censorship). But again, it's okay because the cases are interesting and the chemistry between the main leads is great. The ending though will fuck with your brain a little, so just be prepared for that.
Now, this isn't a bromance, but Couple of Mirrors is glorious. Supposedly they're working on a season 2 (because the ending of season one is very open ended) but oh man, oh man will you love these girlies. You'll hate Youyi's husband though and want to kill him every time he opens his mouth so...yeah. He's insufferable and I hate him.
Checkmate is another good bromance. If you've seen My Roommate is a Detective, then you'll know that it's the same main leads from that drama in this drama. I've never actually finished MRIAD because I could not stand the female lead (no seriously, I got through ten episodes before I had to drop it because of how much I hated the female lead) but I did finish Checkmate and I loved it. A few of the cases are based off of Agatha Christie's books, like Murder on the Orient Express. It's really good, good overarching case, lots of twists that you don't see coming...I enjoyed this one a lot
A League of Nobleman is also another good bromance, it's very interesting how the leads are tied together and the cases are quite fascinating.
Jiang Hu Shao Nian Jue is a short drama, with like 20 eps and each episode is short but if you like the dynamic of Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou or Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao, then you'll really enjoy this one
Pledge of Allegiance is another good bromance (there's like romance between one of the leads and the female lead but like...there's more chemistry between the main leads so bromance) but whoo boy will this one fuck you up a little. But it's got a lot of whump if you like that. And the cases are interesting
Desire Catcher is a lot like S.C.I. but darker. Ho my god, is this drama darker. But again, good overarching cases, the bromance is *chef's kiss* but be warned, there are two episodes that have sexual assault (not seen of course but you know what's going on in those scenes) and there's a scene where a character slit their wrist (on dramacool it's blurred but you can still see it and apparently on youku, it's not blurred at all) so just be warned. But would definitely recommend this one
Order of the Sommelier isn't a case drama, per se, but oh my god the bromance is so good. Again, if you like the dynamic of Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi, that's what these two give off and I was living for it while watching it. (Episodes are really short, so there's a complied movie on youtube that's like four hours long. However, you're going to have to go to either dramacool or kisskh to watch the last epi because the movie doesn't have an important scene towards the end)
Original Sin is another good drama to watch. The ending is open because we were supposed to have a season 2 but I don't know if that's ever going to happen. I fucking hope it does but...*sigh*
This will get long, so I'm putting the rest under the cut
Jdramas
I don't know if you like jdramas but if you do, here are some good ones
Doubles (I always recommend this one. It's one of my favorites)
Nippon Noir: Detective Y’s Rebellion (a little trippy, it fucks with your head but it's good and the cases are interesting)
Sherlock: The Untold Stories (Can't go wrong with a Sherlock adaptation. This is probably my favorite adaption of Sherlock, just because I really like the actors)
Chiisana Kyojin (very police procedural, corruption, the usual in most japanese crime/police dramas)
Aozora No Tomago (good/interesting crime drama, we love the bromance between the leads...it's a good one)
Where Do I Come From? (Boku wa Doko Kara) (if you like yakuza, this one is also a good one. And while this is like a crime drama, sort of, you're really more focused on the leads)
Rinshou Hanzai Gakusha Himura Hideo no Suiri and Rinshou Hanzai Gakusha Himura Hideo no Suiri SP (I really enjoyed these and I think you will too)
Cold Case
Cold Case S2
Cold Case S3
(These three are mainly just crime/cold case dramas. No bromance but the cases are interesting)
BG: Personal Bodyguard
BG: Personal Bodyguard 2
(These two aren't crime dramas, per se, but the cases they take are interesting and the two leads are great. One of the leads is a main from Rinshou Hanazai Gakusha Himura Hideo no Suiri)
The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window (this one is based off of a manga and it's great. Love the actors and love the bromance (even though the manga/anime is BL)
Rasen no Meikyu: DNA Kagaku Sosa (a very science based crime drama but we love the leads and they argue like an old married couple. I think you'll enjoy it)
Bokura no Shokutaku (Not a crime drama, but the sweetest BL you will ever watch, if you haven't watched it already)
Kdramas
Missing Noir M (A good crime drama, open ending, cases are dark and a little fucked up but still good)
Tell Me What You Saw (this drama is dark and also fucked up, no bromance but the cases are good but do not watch this at night, it will fuck you up)
The Good Detective (S1&S2) oh I love the drama. It's a really good case drama and there is some bromance there. Second season is a lot more fucked up than season 1 but season 1 is still pretty angsty. But highly recommend
Beyond Evil (you need to watch this one. Need to. It's a must. It will fuck with your head and you will cry at the end but you will have been so glad you watched this)
Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (cute, short BL. Definitely good)
The Guest (good drama, very dark, would not recommend watching at night if you don't like horror but the bromance is good)
Color Rush (another good BL)
You Make Me Dance (a BL that made me cry so...it's a good BL)
The Veil (no bromance but it's a great action/case drama. Will fuck with your head a little but I still recommend it)
Chimera (A mixture of the Devil Judge and Killer and Healer. Definitely something to watch)
Tinted With You (a really sweet BL)
Bad and Crazy (great case drama and great bromance)
Through the Darkness (I haven't finished the last 4 eps (i need to) but from what I've seen so far, I really enjoyed it. But holy shit, it's dark. It's dark. It's fucked up. You need to watch this during the day time do not watch it at night)
TWDramas
Danger Zone Season 1
Danger Zone Season 2
This is a great drama, love the bromance between the leads but again, it's dark. It's probably one of the darker dramas, up there with Tell Me What You Saw, Desire Catcher, and Through the Darkness. This isn't a drama you should watch at night because it's gruesome. And violent. But oh my god, it's so good
These are all the dramas I have to recommend, so I hope you enjoy anon!

Anon I will respond soon. In the meantime, I looked up The Lotus Casebook and 1. I’m delighted to say it was a drama I’ve been waiting for already, its got cheng yi and joseph zeng as leads so yay dmbj bros in a show together!
2. i’m shocked by the number of “wow i hope its not bl/censored bl/bromance, i’m so sick of those” comments on mydramalist on it’s page. First of all because like, what has gay stuff ever done to them (especially in cdrama’s case where bromance still means there can be a straight romance, and even if you absolutely hated queer stories at best any gay romance would be censored and therefore not as ‘bothering’ to you).
Secondly because it reeks of people being pro-what-china’s-been-getting-rid of and i’m not particularly happy to see anyone celebrating “getting rid of” the kinds of works made by authors i support. i didn’t expect or need The Lotus Casebook to be bl or bromance-y at all, but with all those comments now I hope it IS at least to the extent of stuff like Checkmate or MRIAD because i’m annoyed to see people celebrating seeing less open-to-optional-queer-reading stuff. Not even gay stuff, just not totally anti gay stuff... not loving people hoping for full on “destroy any gay possible interpretation” kind of things -.- (In contrast to say Secret of the Three Kingdoms which is made and intended to be straight romances, is PHENOMENAL in its straight romance writing, and still is queer positive in that it mentions men can like men in a lighthearted way in the script as one off stuff, or Eternal Love which likewise left open the implication people could be bi or gay even as its main relationships are all straight - and in my opinion, as a queer person, its fucking nice to see Any shows that attempt to be open minded in such a way when they didn’t have to be).
3. Not about The Lotus Casebook, but related to potential censored bl coming out of china: despite the crackdown last year post Word of Honor, I know Joseph Zeng was in the middle of shooting a bl book to drama adaptation in late 2021 - I can’t find the drama on mydramalist now, but it was there in 2021. So there were bls in production/shooting in china post ban, i am assuming the companies are operating under the belief they’ll be able to air eventually and make money. Meanwhile my boy Chen Xingxu (from Goodbye My Princess) finished shooting spring 2022 of an adaptation of a bl priest novel (Guardians of the Lands). Since it was shooting THIS year, and likely getting finished up now (or already finished and just waiting to be allowed to air - like 2ha and Sha Po Lang right now), again I’m assuming despite everything... companies assume they’ll still eventually get to air their shows and make money. So again I guess to hammer myself home: really annoyed to see anti-bl comments on mydramalist, when so much stuff is NOT queer its easy as fuck to simply avoid it. Meanwhile, the most that can even occur in a cdrama is a possibly close friendship, so people getting “worried a cdrama will be bl and therefore ‘unwatchable’” is so fucking stupid to me.
4. An actual genuine concern? Will the female characters be written well. But I’ve seen tons of straight romances for which female characters are written awful, and tons of bl where female characters are written well. So the only way for good writing is... good writing. And that’s ultimately going to depend on the individual show’s writers, not on if something’s bl or not.

@thorndykechristopher replied to your post “i just finished mriad and (spoilers) if the writers think for a hot...”
Oh good i wasnt the only one wondering if the writers were aiming for an ot3
yessss ot3# OT3!! i mean, if they weren’t aiming for it they did a crap job of not aiming for it.
(i was bracing myself to hate lu yao getting together with bai youning but then it was SO CUTE!!! SOOOO CUTE! and okay fine they sold me on it, but also qiao chusheng is still RIGHT THERE PINING for lu yao every second of every day and lu yao is shit at showing it but he loves him back so much and want him to run away with them and we can’t have qiao chusheng being sad!)
i mean that scene in the wedding church!! where lu yao walks down the aisle (before the wedding) and who is waiting for him at the end of the aisle??!?! (spoiler it’s the OTHER love of his life, who then proceeds to tell him that he is the most important person to him and that basically qiao chusheng would do ANYTHING for him if lu yao would only ask)
it’s funny because normally my style of ot3 shipping leans towards fairly equal relationships between all three sides of the triangle, but for mriad i very much see lu yao as both romantically involved with bai youning and qiao chusheng, but i don’t really see qiao chusheng and bai youning together that way. they clearly love and respect each other, but not in the way they both love lu yao. they will, however, team up occasionally in bed to drive lu yao out of his mind.
anyway it’s a good ot3 and mriad needs to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Rest of the MRIAD characters taking some time to realize that chuyao are together as they dont give away many signs
The three times someone realized Qiao Chusheng was dating Lu Yao, and the one person who already knew.
1. Adou
Adou came in to Qiao Chusheng’s office to find the inspector examining a set of fine ceramics. The glaze was a smooth and even pale jade green. The shape of each piece was delicate and the porcelain was thin. Detective Lu had already stated that it had to have come from the palace, judging by the method of painting. When Inspector Qiao had seized the set, Adou wasn’t able to say. But it was worth noting, at least to Adou, that Lu Yao hadn’t requested it immediately. And yet Chusheng had acquired it all the same.
“Sir, the autopsy report has been finished.” Adou placed the files down on Chusheng’s desk. “Was there anything else you needed?”
“Hmm?” Chusheng looked at him briefly before setting down the delicate cup in his hands and picking up the file. “Where’s Lu Yao?”
“He went to get lunch, sir.”
Chusheng sighed. “Shouldn’t he be back by now?” Adou frowned at the tone Chusheng used.
It wasn’t the same sort he’d heard before from his boss about Lu Yao. Usually it was something a bit more exasperated. This time... it was a little more patient, almost fond.
“I don’t-”
“Well I guess it’s fine. He can come back in his own time and see the report.” Chusheng tossed the folder aside. “In the mean time, find me a nice box for all these things.”
“Sir?”
“Make it a fancy one. Nice carving. Good sturdy hinges and clasp. Lined with silk would be good too.”
“Uhh... is it for any special occasion?” Chusheng gave Adou a look and everything clicked. “Ah. It’s for Detective Lu.”
“This one stays off the books, understand?”
“Of course, sir.” Adou bowed. “I wouldn’t want to stand in the way of you giving courting presents.”
Chusheng got up, ready to throw something, but Adou ran away as fast as he could. He had a fancy box to find after all.
2. Salim
Salim knocked on the door to Chusheng’s apartment and was promptly answered by a barely dressed Lu Yao. Salim tilted his head and Lu Yao immediately put a hand up.
“Ah ah ah, not a word. I was just... Inspector Qiao brought me here because we both drank too much last night.” A smile of sorts was immediately plastered on to Lu Yao’s face. “Is there a case?”
“Yes, sir!” Salim corrected his posture and stood at attention. “I’m here to collect Inspector Qiao, but since you’re here you should come as well.”
“Right, right... Just uh... I’ll get dressed and tell Inspector Qiao. You can go wait with the car.”
“Sir!” Salim nodded and watched as Lu Yao turned back and closed the door.
There, on a barely visible sliver of skin on Lu Yao’s neck was a dark purple blotch, vivid and sharp. It had been a long time since Salim had seen such a thing. More surprising was that it was on Lu Yao’s neck after staying with the inspector. Inspector Qiao’s previous conquests had hardly possessed such obvious displays of what happened overnight.
Or at least, more accurately, Inspector Qiao had never been so forward with any of the ladies on his arm. Detective Lu appeared to be an exception.
Shaking his head, Salim returned to the car, but sat inside to wait. If Detective Lu really was the exception, then getting the pair out of the house might take longer than expected.
3. Mr. Bai
Mr. Bai watched as Chusheng approached with a particular spring in his step. It was like he’d become a new man. Something had changed.
“My- I mean our Lu San Tu has really out done himself this time,” Chusheng said as he related the details of the most recent case to Mr. Bai. “I don’t know how he keeps doing it, but this one is also finished.”
“You speak of him much more fondly these days,” Mr. Bai said as he fed his birds.
“Do I?” Chusheng rubbed his palms against his thighs, a strangely nervous gesture for the normally under control young man. “Well... I guess I see him in a better light these days, laoye.”
“Hmm... A better light? We have much to thank him for.” Mr. Bai stroked his chin. “And how is he getting along with A-ning?”
“Still just friends,” Chusheng said firmly. “I think Lu Yao is seeing someone else.”
“Oh? Is my daughter not good enough?” Mr. Bai turned back to Chusheng. “What happened between them?”
“They’ve really just decided they’re better as friends. I promise you, the person currently dating Lu Yao is very good to him and...” Chusheng’s face turned a bit pink. “Your associations with him will assuredly be good, laoye.”
“Is that so...” Mr. Bai sighed and turned back to his birds. “Then I guess I cannot force it this time.” Mr. Bai looked back at Chusheng out of the corner of his eyes. “Tell the person dating Mr. Yao that I hope they don’t do anything to inhibit his abilities. It would be most disappointing.”
“Of course. Please excuse me, laoye.”
As Chusheng walked away, Mr. Bai stroked his chin again. To be sure, to have Lu Yao as his son-in-law through Youning would have been very good indeed. But it seemed, he’d have to have him via proxy with Chusheng in the end. At least if the tone of voice Chusheng had used was any indication.
“He’s practically my son anyway,” Mr. Bai said dismissively to himself. “So if Mr. Yao and Chusheng are together, it’s like he’s my son-in-law anyway.” Mr. Bai scooped up another portion of bird seed and then paused. “But then must I give a dowry for Chusheng?”
+1. Bai Youning
A groan followed by a whine. The sound of loud thumping. Breathy moans followed. There was even a sharp slap followed by a louder moan. Bai Youning grit her teeth to prevent herself from screaming and covered her ears with her pillow.
Truly, she loved Chusheng and Lu Yao like older brothers.
They were like her pillars that supported her no matter what. They also fed her plenty of interesting tidbits about cases for her articles. Nothing could shake her affection for them or how far she’d go to protect both of them. It was worth the shameful hypocrisy of rejecting her background while embracing it just for the men to do her bidding. Not that Chusheng needed particular protecting, but the gesture was there.
And yet... Youning really didn’t want to keep thinking about how active their sex life was and had been for the several weeks that Chusheng and Lu Yao had been dating. Nor did she want to think about how good Chusheng was at driving Lu Yao wild.
“Chusheng-ge... It’s times like these that I really wish your reputation didn’t precede you...” Youning cried. “I support you both, but I really need to sleep!”

So, now that Checkmate is over, I can give my thoughts on it.
First of all, I enjoyed this drama so much more than I did MRIAD.  Like I was actually able to finish the drama, unlike MRIAD where I only made it to ep. 10.  I enjoyed the characters, I really enjoyed the cases....overall, I really enjoyed the drama.
Second of all, I loved Situ Yan and Luo Shaochuan.  Their relationship reminded me a hell of a lot like Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou and anything that reminds me of them makes me very happy.  In the last two episodes, I really thought they were going to disappoint me and they were having this whole fight, little did I fucking know that they PLANNED this shit.  Situ and Shaochuan never fucking disappoint.  God fucking bless.
Third of all, I was actually pleasantly fucking surprised at the antagonists in this drama, mainly Jin Qiming and Zhou Mowan.  I didn’t fucking see them coming at all, especially Jin Qiming.  He looked so innocent and nice but that’s why you can really never trust the innocent ones.  Also, I’m kind of glad that Mowan was a villain in the end.  Liked that little twist.
Fourth of all, I liked that Situ and Shaochuan were almost always together in this drama compared to MRIAD where it ended up being that Luo Yao was always somehow with BYN and Chusheng was left behind.  Also, while yes there were hints of romance in this drama, they never really went anywhere, which I’m grateful for.
And yes while Situ is leaving Shaochuan, just like Luo Yao left Chusheng, Shaochuan isn’t alone, Situ is the one who is alone.  And the final hug between Situ and Shaochuan is so much happier than the hug between Luo Yao and Chusheng.  I kind of like that they flipped the MRIAD ending and made it happy in this one.  Like yes, thank you.  Do I wish that they could have stayed together?  Of course I do.  But I will take this ending over the MRIAD ending any fucking day.
And finally, for anyone who wants to start Checkmate, you cannot go into this drama expecting it to be anything like MRIAD.  Yes, a lot of the actors from MRIAD are in this drama, but their personalities are not the same and you cannot expect them to be.  This isn’t a sequel to MRIAD, this is a whole new drama with whole new cases.  So don’t try to compare MRIAD and Checkmate because they are not the same
But, overall, 10/10 would definitely watch this drama again

9. Qin Yi Heng coming to his room was not that unusual - they lived on the same compound, after all, and they would often talk about new clues, or anything new they found - most of their notes and maps were in Qin Er’s room, that much is true, but nevertheless, Qin Er would still come down to his room. (hear the sound of each others’ hearts;Psych-Hunter, Qin Yi Heng/Jiang Shuo; Jiang Shuo/Yuan Mu Qing)

WELL UH I kind of thought we would reach into my card game openings too, but all of these are cdramas and naritaverse. Oh well, whoops. I like the lines I did in the Caw! Caw! series because on 16 and 15 I started all poetic and metaphorical and then in 14 there is Kugi bitching he wants new furniture. Truly poetic cinema.
I also like the opening line of 20 because of the Ikebukuro Message Boards feeling.
I’m just gonna tag @insertimaginativenamehere and @simonlorden if ya wanna do it

i got a whole rec list of alternate sherlock holmes esque story takes if u used to like bbc sherlock but u know how it like. insulted ppl for interpreting it as queer subtext by explicitly insulting such a reading in their own show, after putting in blatant queer subtext like they did.
and just like. would love to get into some sherlock esque stories again but would like to be treated nicer by the writing
#rant#sherlock holmes#i mean i havent watched Elementary or Granada Holmes but i imagine both are good already kind of established alternatives#but like queer subtext alternatives which are newer? i got a few recs#miss sherlock i haven't seen yet so idk if it has Cruel queer subtext then no-homoing like bbc did#but most of the ones on this alternate rec list i have seen and can confirm they never felt malicious the same way that in the end sbbc#writing felt to me :/#recs would include: Detective L if you want dapper butch woman Watson and bi eyecandy Sherlock in 1920s shanghai#My Roommate is A Detective if you want dating subtext as blatant as sbbc but much more#nice to the audience as far as letting u think what u want#Criminologist Himura so far feels a LOT like the original sherlock novels but in a modern era#also very queer subtext just because i guess why wouldnt u#i havent seen miss sherlock yet but its both woman sherlock and watson and i like that as a concept#Detective L has the most similar (but kinder to audiences interpretation i guess) vibe in aesthetic to sbbc#MRIAD has probably the best cases/unique take in that its a solid trio of morally ambiguous people#so its much less like sherlock but more a reference#Criminologist Himura really feels like a modern take with a new spin#as a more murderous Sherlock and more civilian Watson#and if you want full on gay but don't need it to be too similar to Sherlock? then Torchwood and Guardian exist#if you like really gay romance teams and sci fi fantasy camp galore because. u gotta love sci fi fantasy camp to watch those shows#but the gay couples are canon and are in mystery solving teams so like.

Chuyao 2
Summary: Lu Yao’s life took a different turn when he got to Shanghai.
There was a man in Chusheng’s kitchen. Tall, attractive, dressed in expensive night clothes, including a gossamer robe. Youning didn’t recognise him. He wasn’t one of her father’s men.
“It’s rude to stare.”
Youning jumped, not expecting the man behind her.
“Chu- Chusheng! It’s rude to scare people like that.”
Laughing, the older man approached the stranger. Wrapping his arms around the other’s waist, Chusheng pressed a kiss to his cheek.
“Morning sweetheart, you sleep ok?”
Laughing the man turned in the smaller man’s arms, accepting the kiss, arms wrapped around the other’s neck.
“When you finally let me sleep you mean? I slept perfectly darling. Oh! Hello there.”
“Ah, right. Youning, this is Lu Yao.  He’s going to help us with this case. Sweetheart, this is Bai Youning.”
“Bai?”
“Yes, Bai.”
Shaking himself out of whatever those thoughts were, Lu Yao held out his hand, smile on his face.
“Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve read your articles, they’re very good.”
Blushing, Youning shook the hand.
“Thank you. Chusheng never mentioned you before, how did you meet?”
The two men looked at each other, a silent conversation happening. Youning hadn’t seen that since her parents. Chusheng cleared his throat.
“That’s a story for another day. Right now, we have work to do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another week, another case. Youning sighed, throwing herself across Chusheng’s desk, whining.
“Chusheng, we’re getting nowhere. Why can’t we ask your Lu Yao for help again?”
“He’s working.”
“So? Interrupt him. We’ve been stuck on the same piece of evidence for three days. Please?”
Sighing, Chusheng reached for his jacket.
“Fine, but one negative comment and you are never let on another crime scene again, got it?”
“Got it.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“The Lotus Cloud? Chusheng, why are we here?”
She looked up at the building, hesitant to go inside. Hand on the door, Chusheng turned to look at Youning, who stood at the bottom of the steps.
“This is where Lu Yao works.”
“This is a whorehouse.”
“So it is. You coming in or what?”
They walked through the reception area, people greeting Chusheng. Seems like he was a regular. Chusheng walked up the stairs and headed for a room at the end of the hall, Youning walking close behind him. He knocked on the door, smiling when he heard something fall. The door swung open, Chusheng bracing himself.
“Chu!!”
Lu Yao leapt into the other man’s arms, pulling him into a passionate kiss. Seeing Chusheng’s wandering hands, Youning cleared her throat. Lu Yao pulled away, blushing when he saw the young woman.
“Youning, I’m sorry. Oh, this isn’t a social visit.”
He looked upset, which made Youning feel guilty. Chusheng gently pushed the other man back into the room, sitting on the couch and pulling him into his lap. Nuzzling Lu Yao’s cheek, Chucheng moved to press kisses along his neck.
“I’m sorry gorgeous. Help us solve this case and I’ll book you for an entire week. You can come to mine, we can cook together, wake up together, spend days together.”
Lu Yao giggled, looking a bit happier. He bared more of his neck to Chusheng’s kisses.
“That does sound nice. I like when I get to spend a few days with you. Ok, you go get some tea and Youning will fill me in.”
“Deal.”
Chusheng left the room, sending a warning glare to Youning, who was staring at a wall. It was a nice room. A large bed took up one wall with a chest of drawers and  wardrobe opposite it. Through the cracked door, she could see lace and see through fabrics. Lu Yao sat in the living area which contained a table, an armchair and a couch. There was another wardrobe which Youning assumed contained Lu Yao’s normal clothes, like he wore when he worked with the police.
“So, you’re a..?”
She trailed off, unsure what to say.
“A prostitute, yes. Take a seat.”
Youning sat in the armchair, eyes fixed on Lu Yao.
“You have a lot of questions.”
“I don’t understand, you’re so smart. Why are you here?”
“Are you saying prostitutes can’t be smart?”
“No, of course not!”
Lu Yao laughed softy, shushing the young woman.
“It’s ok, really. This wasn’t my first choice. After England, I was supposed to return home where my father had the perfect job and husband picked out for me. I didn’t want any of that so I came to Shanghai. Turns out my father’s reach extends further than I thought it did. He blacklisted me from every corporation, shop, company in the city. Madame Wu was the only person who would hire me. It’s no too bad. I make a lot of money and the men and women spoil me. Could be worse.”
“But, you and Chusheng? You seem to love him.”
“Your father sent Chusheng here a few years ago. Felt he was too stressed, too aggressive. I caught his eye and took him up here. I won’t lie, he hurt me the first few times, covering me in marks, leaving me limping, unable to see another customer for a few days. He was angry all the time, furious. Thankfully, I don’t mind a bit of pain.”
“What changed?”
“He did. As time went on, he saw me as a person, not just a sex doll, which is how most customers see me. We spent our time talking, getting to know each other. He calmed down, became softer, gentle, loving. And then I told him I was in love with him and thank God, he felt the same. So, we do what we can.”
“Why don’t you leave?”
“I have a contract dear. For another ten years at least. I owe Madame Wu for the room, the clothes, the food and drink. It adds up. I’ll never make enough money to buy my contract, neither will Chusheng. So, we make do with what we have.”
Youning felt sorry for the young man in front of her. He looked sad, tears in his eyes as he spoke about his relationship with Chusheng. The two seemed so in love, the fact that they weren’t able to be together broke her heart. Before she could speak, Chusheng entered the room, a tray with cups and a teapot in his hands.
“Lu Yao, sweetheart, are you ok?”
He dropped the tray onto the table, falling to his knees in front of his lover. Reaching up, he gently wiped the tears from the other’s eyes.
“Why the tears? How many times have I said that someone as beautiful as you shouldn’t be crying?”
“Far too many. I’m fine, just emotional. Get up here, show me the case files. Let’s solve another murder. I swear, you bring me the oddest presents.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days later, Chusheng walked into his office. Bai Qili sat at his desk, his daughter standing behind him.
“Good morning?”
“Chusheng, I’ve been a bad person.”
What could Chusheng say to that? Of course he was a bad person, so was Chusheng.
“Ok?”
“Not in the way you’re thinking. I had you do terrible things for me. You hurt people, killed people for me. I used you as a weapon, I dehumanised you. And I never thanked you for that. Consider this my thank you. And my apology.”
He gestured to the piece of paper on the desk. Slowly, still very confused, Chusheng picked it up, unfolding it. What he saw brought tears to his eyes, breath catching in this throat.
“This is-“
“I bought Lu Yao’s contract from Madame Wu. He’s free. To do whatever he wants. To be with whoever he wants. This is the least I can do for you. Go tell him, he doesn’t know yet. I though he would want to hear it from you.”
“Thank you.”
Bai Qili waved his tearful thanks away.
“Go Chusheng. This is the least I can do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chusheng ran through the reception area, ignoring the greetings sent his way. Banging on Lu Yao’s door, he grinned as he heard the other man swearing and stumbling over whatever he had dropped.
“WHAT? Chusheng, my God, what is wrong with you?”
Laughing, he swept the taller man into his arms, dancing through the room with him. Lu Yao laughed, clueless, but always happy to see his Chusheng happy.
“Not that I’m complaining, but what is wrong with you today?”
“Look. Look at this.”
Taking the paper from his lover’s shaking hands, Lu Yao read it, eyes wide.
“This is my contract. What?”
“Bai Qili bought it and gave it to me. You’re free Lu Yao. You can leave.”
“I can leave. I can leave! Oh my God, we can be together. We can stay in your house, your bed. I can cook in your kitchen.”
“You mean our house, our bed and our kitchen!”
Laughing, the couple collapsed onto the bed, sharing kisses and whispered plans. They had a life to plan after all.

Just wanted to say - you are doing great with the gifs! I’ve been wanting to learn how to make them since forever and can’t get my butt to do it- but you keep going, practice makes perfect! Also - 100% on point with Lu Yao and his loyalty to Qiao Chusheng. Great observation.
Thank you for your encouragement - it means a lot since I only just started out on blogs and gifs and what not 😄 I think the MRIAD fandom is really small comparatively, so I always feel like I’m missing out on all the Chuyao that there is. I’m still not very confident each time I post something, so your words are really motivating! I think I’ll keep at it some more haha!
I still can’t figure out why I’m so invested in QCS as a character, because honestly, I loved The Untamed and The Guardian, but even those guys couldn’t inspire me to set something up and get going.  In any case, I’m enjoying re-watching MRIAD episodes for gif-ing purposes so you can look forward to more (hopefully, improved gifs).
Also, can I just say, I’m pleased as punch right now, because I’ve been following your blog and Chuyao fic (yes, you can read this as a nudge for the last chapter of Stop Being Dead) since before I set this up, so your words have really made my day! Okay, I'll stop before I start gushing!
