You had decided to stop by Mitch’s house to visit. It was a complete surprise to Mitch, and a good one at that. It had been so long since the two of you hung out together, so the event was long overdue.
Before either of you expected or wanted it, your stay was nearly over. Mitch’s parents were out for the night, Ella was asleep in her room, Molly was resting on the couch in the living room, and you and Mitch were sharing a lounging chair out by the pool and gazing at the stars.
“Do you have to go? I mean, university is overrated anyways,” he complained, adjusting his arms so that each of them was draped over you. “Unfortunately, yes. I value my education. Besides, medical training isn’t exactly cheap,” you sighed, lacing your fingers together. He let out a shaky sigh and held you tighter.
“Just a couple more months, I promise. After that we can do this as often as you’d like,” you smiled up at him. A small, gentle kiss on his cheek caused him to smile a bit. The ever familiar sparkle in his eyes when you did so shining through his glasses. “Then we are doing this every single minute of every single day,” he grinned.
He brushed a small strand of hair from your face and leaned down to kiss you… but you were stopped short by the sound of shattering glass coming from inside the house. The first and only thought that came to both of your minds sent you into a panic: Ella.
The pair of you jumped up, knocking the lounging chair to the ground and running inside the house to find out what the source of the noise was, and where the most likely terrified seven year old happened to be.
You found her first, upstairs surrounded in broken glass, a large puddle of water, and… flowers? She was crying, a small cut on her leg no doubt from the broken glass. You did your best to avoid the glass scattered on the floor as you picked her up and placed her on the couch after alerting Mitch that she was safe.
“Sweetie, what happened?” you asked tenderly, drying her tears and the water on her legs. Mitch went to find bandages and a broom to sweep up the glass. “I was gonna bring you those because you’re leaving, but my hands were slippery so I dropped it…” she explained between sniffles. You smiled, wiping more tears from her eyes.
Mitch returned with the broom and bandages, handing the medical supplies to you and proceeding to clean up the glass shards. “Well, it’s a good thing Dr. [Y/L/N] is here,” you said, cleaning the small wound on her leg and pressing a bandage to it. She smiled a bit, her hands on your shoulders for comfort. They soon moved around your neck for a hug, you returning the gesture instantly.
“Thanks for the flowers,” you whispered. She pulled away and looked to Mitch, who was now standing behind you. “Can I be the flower girl at your wedding?” she asked, a serious yet curious tone in her voice. You and Mitch looked at each other, breaking out into small fits of laughter.
“We’ll see, kiddo. Just don’t drop the flowers this time, okay?” Mitch said after regaining his breath. It was soon lost to the chorus of laughter the three of you created to fill the room with the light mood.
