Mission: Clearly Superior 3
I sadly missed recording the first half of this mission so we just have the dialogue:
Part 1: Superior Iron Man: I need to survey my domain. Identify anyone foolish enough to think they can challenge the Superior Iron Man. Loki: You don't sound like yourself. Superior Iron Man: Your words are worthless. Pathetic whispers drowning in a rapidly advancing technological tidal wave of my design. Loki: ...You sound like me.
Part 2:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Superior Iron Man: This world is hopelessly flawed. I need to delete it. Tear it to pieces. Burn it down to nothing but a blank slate for my superior design. Loki: I liked you better when all you did was make jokes. They weren't funny, but I sometimes found humor in your attempts to be funny... Superior Iron Man: That Tony Stark is gone. Soon, you and the rest of this world will join him...

as a big carol fan in the comics, i have to say that carol thinking she had to fix everything as captain marvel before she could return home to her family and not understanding that her family just wanted her to come back and be with them is peak understanding of carol danvers as a character. it was incredibly accurate to who she is for her to think that way and i honestly loved it.
Carol is one my faves in the comics. I love her Ms Marvel days too. I agree with you about her wanting to fix everything first being in character 100 %.
I would say Brie's Carol gives me millennial vibes (even though she's not even one) and comic Carol has an old time-y charm. That's something that pops out to me. This is besides their backstory and storylines which are all different ofc.

something that is so funny about the "well, Disney+ is limited in their resources that's why they change original concepts/characters so much! it's not their fault that they're limited!" argument is that a) no they're not. they're the largest media conglomerate in history. and b) even if they were limited in some aspects, they could simply.... choose not to adapt certain storylines or characters that they can't handle. saw this recently in both marvel and star wars (in the ms. marvel show and the kenobi show) where people complained about how the creators erased huge parts of kamala's core characteristics by changing her inhuman powers and backstory. and people were saying "well, making her powers live action would be super expensive and it would look bad!" ok then.... why adapt it? the comic is still there doing it successfully. or why make it live action, when they know the limitations of the medium? I complained about Kenobi's alien designs cause they looked cheap as hell and people went: "the actors can't do stunts in more elaborate make up! it would take too long to make the show if they did!" ok then.... why did they make it live action? or why not take your time to make sure the make up and cgi used to cover it up look good while respecting the workers' job hours? I mean the answer to all of this is capitalistic greed and the need to produce more (mediocre) media in a short amount of time, but somehow people love giving unrelated excuses to it. just admit it's bad and looks like shit cause the company doesn't care about quality and go

Today I would like to go over the history of an alternate universe Spider-Man who was created solely to be a gag character but in recent years has been getting actual serious attention. I am of course referring to:
Patrick O'Hara, the Web-Slinger.
Tumblr media
The Web-Slinger first debuted in the very original Spider-Verse event but don't go into this expecting to read much of him. Unlike other popular Spider characters like Spider-Gwen and Peni Parker he didn't get his own issue to tell you his origin or anything like that. No, he was instead part of the book's gag team.
Throughout the original Spider-Verse event we would occasionally get to check in on Miles Morales and Drake Bell Ultimate Spider-Man recruiting the goofier spider-people across the multiverse. We even got a full issue of them recruiting the 1967 cartoon Spider-Man! At one point in this requirement spree we check in on them and see that at some point they recruited a cowboy Spider-Man
Tumblr media
That's basically it for Web-Slinger's role in the original Spider-Verse. No name, no actual lines other than Yehaaaw, and after this point he's just in a few background panels.
Someone at Marvel must have really liked this idea though as he made more appearances in later Spider-Verse events. Such as in Spider-Geddon where he gets to be alongside Superior Spider-Man, Spiders-Man, and Spider-Punk as a team of Spider-Men who are willing to kill people
Tumblr media
Spider-Geddon also gave us Vault of Spiders, a collection of short stories set in the universes of various Spider-People. Here we got a 7 page story showcasing Web-Slinger in his own world fighting against his version of Morbius. This little story also gave confirmation that yes, he shoots webs from his guns. They are literal web shooters
Tumblr media
Next up we have what it easily Web-Slinger's biggest apperance: the 2019 Spider-verse event. In this comic Miles Morales has to jump from universe to universe helping various spider-people fight crime. It's a fun little book even if it doesn't serve much purpose. I'd love if they brought the concept back for some sort of Spider-Verse Team Up.
Anyway, the fourth issue of this book has Miles travel to Web-Slinger's universe, now officially numbered as Earth-31913, to help him save a Mexican village being raided by El Escorpion.
Basically everything we know about Web-Slinger comes from this issue since it's the only time he has really gotten to shine. So here are a few details we learn about him here.
His version of Uncle Ben was not his uncle, but rather a war buddy of his. I cannot tell if it was the Civil War or the American-Mexican war though
Yes, his horse, named Widow, WAS bit by a radioactive spider, the same spider bit both of them which gives them a telepathic link to each other. They call it the Rider Sense
His name is Patrick O'Hara, in previous appearances he used the name Parker, but that was in fact a fake name. He only tells Miles this because he trusts him
Tumblr media
That wasn't the last we saw of Webslinger though, we actually got to see him and his earth again earlier this year in Extreme Venomverse. Usually the Venomverse stories will either take place in a earth that is only slightly different from Earth-616 or they'll be in their own world with no connection to anything. As far as I can tell the only times a Venomverse story have set themselves in the universe of an already established alternate Spider-Man were Venom Noir from this month and last month with Extreme Venomverse #3
After passing out from wounds in the desert, Web-Slinger finds himself nursed back to health by a woman named Madame Brock. To repay the favor he helps Ms. Brock fight off a pack of goons who are threatening to burn down her place of business.
Tumblr media
And that is the Web-Slinger's most recent appearance in the medium of comics. However he has seemingly gotten popular enough to start appearing in other mediums. He got to team up with Drake Bell Ultimate Spider-Man once again when that cartoon did a Spider-Verse storyline AND he got to appear briefly in Across the Spider-Verse, Miles even steals Widow from him here!

Just got back from watching The Marvels and I loved it! It's fun and absurd at times and really sweet. I hate that it's getting so much criticism and bad reviews. It seems like all women-centric films (especially in the MCU) are always getting more shit (because of course they are).
I am personally such a huge fan of Ms Marvel and Kamala Khan. I saw so much of myself as a young Arab woman in her and the whole family storyline in the series just really hit home (and I loved the inclusion of them in the movie). I hated the comparison they made between the Ms Marvel series ratings and the other disney+ series (Loki, TFATWS, Wandavision). Like of course a series about a new character (to us who haven't read the comics) is not gonna be as anticipated as Loki for example. But she deserves the spotlight she's getting!
Anyway, love The Marvels (but fuck Disney).

Why I'm excited for The Marvels
Tumblr media
The first real introduction I had to the MCU was in 2019, my best friend and I decided to go to the cinema. We weren’t sure what movie to watch but we eventually landed on Captain Marvel, I remember being hooked from the first second and being so excited when, at the end, the words “Captain Marvel will return…” appeared on screen. We left the theatre excited for the sequel which we promised to watch it together. I’m not friends with her anymore but I have to say that, less than a month away from the release of The Marvels, I can’t wait to finally see it and I don’t understand why there seems to be so much negativity surrounding the release of this, in my opinion, very promising movie. So here is why I'm excited for The Marvels!
The cast
Watching the trailer, the first thing that jumps out at me is the cast. The main cast consists of actors who have done consistently good jobs in the past. You may not like Brie Larson but there is no denying that she can act, which is further proven by her many awards, including an Oscar for best actress in 2016. Joining her is Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau who, I think we can all agree on, did an amazing job in WandaVision. And completing the trio is Iman Vellani who is playing Ms marvel. I know a lot of people didn’t like Ms Marvel as a show but I think many are disregarding the fact that the target audience was (younger) teens and not middle-aged men (that isn’t to say that Ms Marvel was perfect but I think it was a fun addition which added something new to the MCU). Besides, I think the problem in Ms Marvel definitely wasn’t Iman’s performance and if they fix the writing issues there is nothing wrong with her character. She is very charismatic and funny, and in my opinion, she is a joy to watch. I am so excited to watch the trio’s dynamic and chemistry!
And as if that wasn’t enough, acting alongside them will be Zawe Ashton. You may know her from Fresh Meat or Velvet Buzzsaw. We don’t know a whole lot about her character yet besides that she will be the antagonist. I think Zawe has a lot of talent and I’m excited to see more of her villainous side.
“throw-away villain”
A lot of people seem to think that this will be a boring, one-time/throw-away villain- kind of movie but I honestly think that that is just what the MCU needs right now. There have been so many big cross-over movies recently that deal with very complex issues (time travelling, the multiverse) that something small that focuses on the characters and story would work really well. Especially as it seems that Zawe’s character is going to be building on past villain Ronan (Guardians of the Galaxy), which gives her an already established back story so it doesn’t come out of nowhere which is often an issue with these one-time villains.
Recent MCU movies have been falling into the trap of building up lots of expectations, for them just to have a simple storyline. For example, everyone was expecting Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness to include loads of crossovers and references to other movies which made the reality so much more disappointing. I think The Marvels has done a really good job of building up realistic expectations while still making an exciting trailer. No one is expecting Wanda or Loki to appear in this movie so no one will be disappointed when it doesn’t happen.
“The M-She-U”
I have been reading the comments on the promotion for the movie and a lot of comments say things like: “Ain’t no one watching this ms marvel Has become sadly feministic”
and
“I am willing to bet money this movie I’ll include nothing but horrible comedy, political takes, and sex takes”
(yes, these are actual comments)(I’m not sure if I should correct the grammar or just leave it help)
These comments are commented by people who have seen as much of this movie as you and I, and that means they have seen a 2-minute trailer and you just can’t base a full opinion on those snippets of an entire, 2-hour movie, but let's address them anyway.
“Horrible comedy” – To be completely honest, comedy is always a difficult topic because that is just such a personal preference. But based on what we have seen so far, it seems pretty funny and I hope they’ll be able to balance the serious tones and the comedy. I think to write off a movie as having horrible comedy purely because you think the trailer isn’t funny is shallow and kind of stupid. If one person doesn’t like something that doesn’t mean the whole world agrees with you.
“sadly feministic”/”political takes” – I think it is weird to call any MCU movie “sadly feministic” because it is something that was lacking so much in earlier Marvel movies and their more recent works have started to include more female representation but that doesn’t mean the problem is suddenly solved. I do agree that some representation has been lacking in depth which makes it feel cheap but that’s all the more reason to be more feminist. But even without that, the trailers don’t feel like they are pushing a feminist agenda. They are just heroes who happen to be women and I, as a young girl, am really excited to see that on the big screen.
At the end of the day, anyone is entitled to their own opinions but the hate and negativity that has been surrounding this movie is absolutely insane. There are a lot of people who have decided that (without seeing the movie) they don’t like it and no one else can either. It is 100% okay to not like something but please don’t ruin it for other people.
The cast and their chemistry have me really thrilled for this movie, I am very excited to see what Captain Marvel has been up to all this time.
I will be there opening night with high expectations and a very large bucket of popcorn, I hope to see you there :D

After seeing all the hate that The Marvels has been receiving, it left me feeling a little upset. I understand that you're not going to love every movie you watch. I know that I haven't enjoyed every movie I've watched. However, I could never bring myself to say bad things about a film because I know that so many people worked so hard on it. I could never belittle every bit of time and energy everyone has put into making a movie.
If you have a problem with the movie because it focuses on female superheroes, the leads are four amazing women, and its directed by a woman, then that's just silly. As a girl that has always loved superhero movies, I've always wanted more female lead movies. I have loved seeing Brie Larson as Captian Marvel; the girl is an amazing actress. She's also funny, intelligent, kind, and badass. She's committed to the role. Now I get to see Iman Vellani who is marvelous as Ms Marvel; she's perfection and I can't wait to see more of her and the character. If Kevin would let Iman run the MCU, then I'd be happy. Also, there's Teyonah Parris! I've loved her since seeing her in If Beale Street Could Talk and it's so awesome to see her succeeding. I'm going to need a lot more Monica in the MCU. I'm also going to need more Maria because I want to see their relationship especially now that Monica is in another universe. Then, there's Zawe Ashton. I didn't know of her beforehand, but now I'm going to need to watch everything she's ever done. Something about her is so precious, talented, and brilliant. She's one of my favorite women to ever exist. Finally, Nia DaCosta; I really enjoyed Little Woods and Candyman, therefore, I knew that I'd enjoy this movie. Nia is a brilliant director and screenwriter. I really hope to see more of her work.
In conclusion, I would say that you should watch this movie because the storyline is interesting, the acting is brilliant, the villain does have a valid reason for her actions, and the fight sequences are amazing!!

I've thought of the perfect comparison to explain the kind of story The Marvels feels like. It's like a three part crossover. The story starts in Captain Marvel #76, continues in Ms Marvel #13, then concludes in Photon #1.
It's a fun storyline but because of the nature of the crossover nothing really deep can happen. It's fun to watch the characters interact, but the story isn't really about them - it's a wacky body swap comedy with a superhero twist.

How Blue Beetle is the Hero James Gunn's DCU Needs
Tumblr media
It is no secret the DC Universe has had its fair share of setbacks when it has come to live action films.
From trying to start a universe with Green Lantern, to Man of Steel starting the inconsistent DCEU, it has been hard to watch so many heroes wasted by studio interference, failed universe building, and let's just say, unorthodoxed takes on famous characters (I'm looking at you Joker and Lex).
Now we have an opportunity for a fresh start.
Director James Gunn has a new lineup of films consisting of big swings and fan favorite characters, hoping to build up the DCU we know and love.
In this new marriage between Warner Bros and Gunn, he has inherited 4 children from the previous marriage. The previous box office bomb Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the current box office bomb The Flash, the sequel to one of the biggest DCEU movies Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Blue Beetle, the attempt at a new hero for the DCEU franchise who is somewhat left up in the air between DCEU and DCU.
While some have already chalked this up as another potential bomb, of the 4 movies, this has been my most anticipated.
Unlike the others, Blue Beetle I believe is in a prime slot as the right character, right time, not only to the general public, but to the DCU. Here's why:
1. The Flexibility of Blue Beetle
Tumblr media
Unlike the characters Shazam, Flash, and Aquaman, Blue Beetle is not directly attached the DCEU.
Besides a mention of Batman, and the gear of (the probably late) Ted Kord, Blue Beetle doesn't have many connections to a wider DC Universe. He can exist in either, if they wish to continue one or both.
2. The World Building Potential
Tumblr media
Blue Beetle opens up another part of the DC Universe in multiple different ways EARLY.
As the Scarab is a part of The Reach, this opens up a whole other side of DCU we have never seen, and potentially sets up an invasion storyline.
The Reach also have a deal with The Guardians of the Universe of Oa, setting him up for a potential Green Lantern crossover nicely.
But unlike many other heroes, Jaime Reyes isn't just a member of the Justice League...
Tumblr media
He's a TEEN TITAN!
Jaime opens the door to young heroes existing already! The Teen Titans are a fan favorite, but he is also a member of Young Justice, who are equally as fun.
Tumblr media
This is currently an untapped market for both DC and Marvel (though I'm sure the Young Avengers are coming). Jaime can act as a door between both, offering a perspective as the youngest member of the Justice League, and the senior member of the Titans.
3. Legacy Characters are IN
Tumblr media
A particular kind at least.
If I had a nickel for every legacy character who is (vaguely) attached to a hero they admire, who take on that hero's name, with a similar but different set of powers, who then makes their old costume better, and who happen to be a person of color, I'd have three nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it has happened thrice.
The most famous of course is Miles Morales AKA Spider-Man, who has headed two incredible movies and a pretty sweet video game, along with several appearances in animation.
Tumblr media
The second is fan favorite Kamala Khan AKA Ms. Marvel, who had a pretty solid show and also headed up a video game. While these are not as good as Mile's, they are both in the zeitgeist, and with her big film debut coming up in The Marvels, Iman Vellani has a bright future ahead of herself in and out of the MCU.
And finally, we have Blue Beetle! While he is a legacy character by name, he becomes Blue Beetle AFTER Ted Kord dies in comics, similar to Miles and Peter Parker. He carries the weight and legacy of a hero he never knew, and tries to do it his own way.
That is something audiences are loving right now, and Blue Beetle can tell a similar story.
and finally...
4. Xolo Maridueña is Perfect
Tumblr media
You think I'm overselling him, but I'm not.
If you don't know his name yet, you will soon. As the star of Cobra Kai, Xolo plays Miguel, a kid from nowhere trying to live up to the legacy of man he deems great. If that isn't Jaime, I don't know what is.
Xolo plays every role he has with heart, charm, and has comedic timing to beat. As one of its leads, Xolo helped take Cobra Kai from a YouTube Red Series to one of Netflix's BIGGEST Shows.
And at only 22, he is young enough to play a late teen, and to be in this role for years to come.
In Marvel talk, we can very much be looking at DC's Tom Holland, and Blue Beetle could be Spider-Man Homecoming.
Tumblr media
The bottomline is, I am beyond stoked for Blue Beetle, and as a Latinx fan, I know I'm gonna be there day 1, rooting for its success.
I hope to look back on this 10 years later, as the Justice League unite with Jaime up there with em, three movies under Xolo's belt, a fan favorite, with more to come.

I think a huge problem with how the Avengers turned out in the 80s is the wishy-washy attitude toward Hank Pym, who's already a wishy-washy character because of his constant on-again off-again heroing and the simple inability for any one writer to find a direction for him that could stick. So he got his big moment and it's stained his character for a lot of people, including me. But honestly if that's what Marvel wanted to do with him, they should've made it stick. If Hank is a villainous abuser, he should rightfully be kicked out and reviled, or if you want to play it nice, have him genuinely penitent and staying out of his former friends' lives, and especially making sure he never bothers his victim again. If Hank is a hero, he should never have given into his dark impulses and become an abuser. What we have now is Hank as the missing stair of Avengers mansion, an abuser who not only sullied his oath as a hero, but betrayed and hurt one of his own teammates, but is nevertheless welcomed back into the fold. Not only is he trusted with positions of authority and allowed to mentor vulnerable youths, but he also gets unlimited access to his victim, and everyone cheers whenever she seems ready to reconcile with him. There are real-life nuances to consider, but at the same time, comics always seems to have simple answers to complicated issues. Only when Hank Pym is involved do you have authors bending over backwards to try to prove how he's not that bad and deserves redemption when he's clearly failed to do the only two things his victim asks of him to be forgiven (wholeheartedly apologize without making excuses for him down the line, and then get therapy to make sure it never happens again).
I agree with you, at least to some extent. I have two notes, though:
I think The Avengers began to go downhill when Ms. Marvel was written out in Issue #200. That story was probably the big beginning of the mess. But I think the Hank Pym storyline made everything worse, especially since both these events followed up each other.
I feel like there are ways to have Hank Pym relapse into villainy, while keeping him sympathetic and open to redemption. I wrote my take on that some time ago. Because I have anger issues and mood swings, and so I can all too easily relate to Hank there (and that may not be a great thing to admit, but it is true). So I think it's possible to handle it with nuance. Do I trust a company back in 1981 to handle it with nuance though? That's probably a different matter.
PS: Also, I assume this was written in response to one of my posts. Problem is, I don't know which. So if is in response to one of my posts, can you tell me which? I hope that's not a weird ask.

The best G. Willow Wilson Ms. Marvel scene
Easily my personal favorite scene from the entirety of G. Willow Wilson’s original run on Ms. Marvel was during the phenomenal Mecca arc wherein HYDRA seizes control of Jersey City’s mayor’s office to begin enacting discriminatory policies against Inhumans & Mutants (which heavily mirror the real-life Islamophobic presidential policies of Donald Trump...), and Kamala discovers that underneath the mask of one of the HYDRA regime’s lead enforcers, Discord, is the face of her old classmate Josh Richardson.
Tumblr media
This revelation heavily affects Kamala on an emotional level as it forces her to come to terms with the fact that the things people might perceive to be familiar or safe are not always what they seem to be. She learns how specific circumstances can reveal that individuals who once appeared to be rational and reasonable on the surface may actually believe in ideologies that are controversial or dangerous. Therefore, Kamala is forced to ponder whether or not bigoted & fascistic ideologies have always existed within the hearts of people like Discord and if they're truly representative of who they are, which in turn causes her to doubt both her own place in the world and her mission as a superhero. While Kamala is inflicted with feelings of self-doubt in light of these revelations, she understands that she still has a moral obligation as Ms. Marvel to protect the people of her city. She realizes that the so-called “silent majority's” animosity towards her & super-powered peoples does not give them the right to place their own grievances above the law, and that there are still people who believe and are depending on her. And because Josh revealed his true self underneath the mask of Discord, Ms. Marvel responds in kind by taking off her own mask to reveal the face of his former friend Kamala Khan, and all of the pain and suffering that his actions have inflicted upon herself and others like her…
Tumblr media
But while Kamala does convey feelings of sadness and remorse towards Josh, she simultaneously understands that she cannot excuse his actions since he's still an individual who wrongfully succumbed to the temptations of far-right extremism and fascism. Essentially, even though Kamala desperately wants to believe that Josh is an inherently better person underneath, she recognizes that he was the one who ultimately made the choice to join HYDRA and help them oppress superhuman minorities. Therefore, Kamala acknowledges that Discord is still her enemy regardless of his reasons or whatever sympathy she might feel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kamala decision to NOT condone or excuse Discord’s actions reflects an astonishing level of maturity on her part, and is further indicative of her overall character arc in Mecca. In large measure, Kamala’s character arc is the reason why the storyline is titled “Mecca” in the first place. Although she does not go on a physical pilgrimage to the actual Holy Islamic city, she does experience a spiritual pilgrimage as the HYDRA takeover of Jersey City forces her to realize that not everything is what it seems, that some evils cannot be fought, and that although she’ll endure hardship and failure in her mission she must stay true to herself and others even if there are some people who will never agree with her actions or who she is. It's these revelations that further develop Kamala into "the most human superhero of them all" in my opinion, as it's not just her kindness and willingness to do good that makes her a hero, but also her ability to continue to do good even when confronted with external and internal doubt. And since the entire story takes place over the two-day period of Eid al-Adha, the holiday in which millions of Muslims embark on the pilgrimage to Mecca, Kamala’s psychological journey of self-discovery resonates with the reader on a much deeper level.
And that is why this scene remains my personal favorite Ms. Marvel moment in the entirety of Kamala’s comic book history!
