THE FIRST BOOK OF ESDRAS OR EZRA - From The Douay-Rheims Bible - Latin Vulgate

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION.

This Book taketh its name from the writer, who was a holy priest and doctor of the law. He is called by the Hebrews Ezra, (Ch.) and was son, (T.) or rather, unless he lived above 150 years, a descendant of Saraias. 4 K. xxv. 18. It is thought that he returned first with Zorobabel; and again, at the head of other captives, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes Longimanus, with ample authority. Esdras spent the latter part of his life in exhorting the people, and in explaining to them the law of God. He appeared with great dignity at the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem. 2 Esd. xii. 26. 35. We have four books which bear his name. C. --- This and the following book of Nehemias, originally made but one in Heb. (S. Jerom, &c.) as the transactions of both those great men are recorded. The third and fourth are not in Heb. nor received into the canon of the Holy Scriptures, though the Greek Church hold the third as canonical, and place it first; (W.) and Genebrard would assert that both ought to be received, as they were by several Fathers. But they contain many thing which appear to be erroneous, and have been rejected by others of great authority, and particularly by S. Jerom. The third book seems to have been written very early, by some Hellenist Jew, who was desirous of embellishing the history of Zorobabel; and the fourth was probably composed by some person of the same nation, who had been converted to Christianity, before the end of the second century; and who injudiciously attempted to convert his brethren, by assuming the name of a man who was so much respected. Many things have been falsely attributed to Esdras, on the same account. It is said that he invented the Masora; restored the Scriptures, which had been lost; fixed the canon of twenty-two books; substituted the Chaldaic characters instead of the ancient Hebrew, Samaritan, or Phœnician. But though Esdras might sanction the latter, now become common, the characters might vary insensibly, (Bianconi. Kennicott, Dis. ii.) as those of other languages have done, (H.) and the sacred books never perished wholly; nor could the canon be determined in the time of Esdras. C. --- As for the Masoretic observations and points, they are too modern an invention. Elias Levita, Capel. Houbigant, &c. --- What we know more positively of Esdras, is, (W.) that he was empowered by Artaxerxes to bring back the Jews, and that he acted with great zeal. H. --- This book contains the transactions of 82 years, till A. 3550. The letter of Reum, and the king's answer, (C. iv. 7. till C. vi. 19. and well as C. vii. 12, 27.) are in Chaldee; the rest of the work is in Hebrew. C. --- We may discover various mysteries concealed under the literal sense of this and the following book. S. Jer. ep. ad Paulin. W. --- Esdras is supposed by this holy doctor, as well as by some of the Rabbins, &c. to have been the same person with the prophet Malachy; (Button) and several reasons seems to support this conjecture, though it must still remain very uncertain. C. --- Some think that (H.) Esdras wrote only the four last chapters, and the author of Paral. the six preceding ones. D. --- But it is most probable that he compiled both from authentic documents. H. --- Some few additions may have been inserted since, by divine authority. 2 Esd. xii. 11, 22. T.

This Catholic commentary on the Old Testament, following the Douay-Rheims Bible text, was originally compiled by Catholic priest and biblical scholar Rev. George Leo Haydock (1774-1849). This transcription is based on Haydock's notes as they appear in the 1859 edition of Haydock's Catholic Family Bible and Commentary printed by Edward Dunigan and Brother, New York, New York.

Cyrus king of Persia releaseth God's people from their captivity, with license to return and build the temple in Jerusalem: and restoreth the holy vessels which Nabuchodonosor had taken from thence.

[1] In the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremias might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of the Persians: and he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and in writing also, saying:

In anno primo Cyri regis Persarum, ut compleretur verbum Domini ex ore Jeremiae, suscitavit Dominus spiritum Cyri regis Persarum : et traduxit vocem in omni regno suo, etiam per scripturam, dicens :

[2] Thus saith Cyrus king of the Persians: The Lord the God of heaven hath given to me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judea.

Haec dicit Cyrus rex Persarum : Omnia regna terrae dedit mihi Dominus Deus caeli, et ipse praecepit mihi ut aedificarem ei domum in Jerusalem, quae est in Judaea.

[3] Who is there among you of all his people? His God be with him. Let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judea, and build the house of the Lord the God of Israel: he is the God that is in Jerusalem.

[4] And let all the rest in all places wheresoever they dwell, help him every man from his place. with silver and gold, and goods, and cattle, besides that which they offer freely to the temple of God, which is in Jerusalem.

[5] Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Juda and Benjamin, and the priests, and Levites, and every one whose spirit God had raised up, to go up to build the temple of the Lord, which was in Jerusalem.

[7] And king Cyrus brought forth the vessels of the temple of the Lord, which Nabuchodonosor had taken from Jerusalem, and had put them in the temple of his god.

[8] Now Cyrus king of Persia brought them forth by the hand of Mithridates the son of Gazabar, and numbered them to Sassabasar the prince of Juda.

[9] And this is the number of them: thirty bowls of gold, a thousand bowls of silver, nine and twenty knives, thirty cups of gold,

[11] All the vessels of gold and silver, five thousand four hundred: all these Sassabasar brought with them that came up from the captivity of Babylon to Jerusalem.

Commentary:

Ver. 1. In. Heb. "And (C.) or But in," as 2 Par. xxxvi. 22. H. --- Thus the historical works are connected. Spinosa infers, from this book being inserted after Daniel in the Heb. Bible, that the same author wrote both. But the order of the books in the Sept. and Vulg. is far more natural, (C.) and this has often varied in Hebrew, &c. Kennicott. See 2 Par. xxxvi. 23. H. --- First. The design was only put in execution the following year. A. 3468. --- Cyrus (Heb. coresh, (H.) or Koresch) means "the sun," according to Ctesias and Plutarch. Josephus (xi. 1.) informs us that this prince became a friend of the Jews, in consequence of having seen the prediction of Isaias (xliv. 28. and xlv. 1.) fulfilled in his own person. He took Babylon, A. 3466, and established the Persian empire, which was subverted by Alexander. C. --- he had before ruled over Persia 27 years, and only reigned three as sole monarch at Babylon. T. --- The Lord; every good notion, even in infidels, proceeds from him. D. --- Cyrus was one of the best and greatest conquerors of antiquity. He was the son of Cambyses, by Mandane, princess of Media. Xenophon informs us that he died in his bed; (H.) and had been lately conquered. T.

Ver. 2. Earth, which had belonged to the king of Babylon. H. --- This may be an hyperbole, or allusion to Isai. xlv. 1. M. --- The dominions of Cyrus were very extensive, (Xenophon, Cyrop. i. and viii.) reaching from Ethiopia to the Euxine sea, &c. He acknowledges that he received all from the hand of God. Nabuchodonosor makes a similar confession of his supreme dominion; (Dan. ii. 47.) and the potentates of Egypt and of Rome, procured sacrifices to be offered to him. But what advantage did they derive from this sterile knowledge of his divinity? since they did not honour him accordingly, but wished to join his worship with that of idols; though the force of miracles and of reason must have convinced them that there is but one God. C. --- House, or temple. Isai. xliv. 28. --- Judea. So the Sept. read, but the Heb. has "Juda," all along. The whole country now began to be know by the former name. H.

Ver. 3. He is the God, is placed within a parenthesis, by the Prot. But the pagans might suppose that God was attached to this city, like their idols; and the temple was not yet begun. H.

Ver. 4. Rest, who do not please to return. The Jews went at different times, and under the different leaders, Zorobabel, Esdras, and Nehemias. Many did not return at all. Cyrus allowed them full liberty. He permits money to be exported, particularly the half sicle, required Ex. xxx. 13, and all voluntary contributions for the temple. Grotius. C. --- He also enjoins the prefects of the provinces, (v. 6, and C. iii. 7.) whom Josephus styles "the king's friends," to forward this work; and he even designed to perfect it at his own expence. C. vi. 4.

Ver. 8. Gazabar means, "the treasurer." Heb. Syr. C. Prot. 3 Esd. ii. 19. H. --- Son is not in Heb. &c. (M.) and must be omitted. T. --- Sassabasar. This was another name for Zorobabel, (Ch.) given by the Chaldees, as they changed the name of Daniel into Baltassar. Euseb. Præp. Evan. xi. 3. T. --- But others think that this was the Persian "governor (Junius) of Judea," (3 Esd.) as one reside at Jerusalem, till the days of Nehemias. 2 Esd. v. 14. It does not appear that Zorobabel was invested with this dignity, before the reign of Darius Hystaspes. Agg. ii. 24. C.

Ver. 9. Knives. Sept. &c. "changes" of garments. C.

Ver. 10. Sort. Sept. and Syr. "double;" yet of less value. C. --- As no first sort had been mentioned, and some Latin MSS. read 2410, agreeably to 3 Esd. ii. 12, and the truth, (Hallet) it may be inferred that "thousands were expressed anciently by single letters, with a dot...over them." Afterwards, when numbers were expressed by words at length, the b being thus reduced to signify "two," was, of course, written shnim; but this word making nonsense with the following, has been changed into mishnim, a word not very agreeable to the sense here, and which leaves the sum total, now specified in the Heb. text, very deficient for want of the 2000, thus omitted. Kennicott, Dis. ii. --- Josephus has, "30 golden cups, 2400 of silver." H.

Ver. 11. Hundred. Only 2499 are specified. 3 Esd. reads, 5469. Josephus (xi. 1.) differs from all, reading 5210; which shews that the copies have varied, and that the Heb. is incorrect. C. - The use of number letters might cause this confusion. H. Capel. iii. 20. 13.

Tegoroczna Suspiria ma opowiadać zupełnie na nowo mroczną historię pewnej grupy tanecznej, którą poznaliśmy w 1977 roku, kiedy światło dzienne ujrzało arcydzieło mistrza włoskiego kina grozy – Dario Argento, twórcy Głębokiej czerwieni, Inferno czy Ciemności. Przyznaję, że zwiastun nowej Suspirii jest dosyć enigmatyczny i ciężko coś konkretnego z niego wyciągnąć. Widać jednak, że ludzie od promocji starali się, jak tylko mogli, by nadać mu klimat i wyraz oryginału. Co poniekąd się udało. Zresztą sprawdźcie sami.

[Storia] Intermezzo (o Riassunto di Quasi Tutto)

La stanza è illuminata da poche candele che emanano una luce fredda. Senza un apparente criterio, fluttuano in lente traiettorie lungo la stanza, mutando continuamente le ombre delle figure sulle pareti. Il tavolo è un semicerchio, fatto di pietra, rifinito in argento. La sua superficie racconta la storia dalla quale sono nati l'Ordine e molto altro. Attorno al tavolo stanno cinque scanni, costruiti in legno e rifiniti in metalli e materiali pregiati. Ognuno è unico sia nei materiali che nelle decorazioni, eccetto i due più esterni, che sono uno lo specchio dell'altro. Tutto ciò non però visibile in questo momento, poiché ogni centimetro delle sedute è coperto dal mantello dell'occupante. Il volto di coloro che siedono al tavolo è sconosciuto al resto del mondo, e tale deve sempre rimanere, eccetto alle altre figure presenti nella stanza. L'unica nota comune tra coloro che siedono al tavolo d'argento, sembra essere la loro natura umanoide, o presumibile tale. Uno ha una folta barba. In essa sono bloccati, come incastonati, piccoli pezzi di metalli preziosi. Rame, argento, oro, platino. Ogni pepita rappresenta un uomo ucciso per l'ordine. Il materiale indica la sua rilevanza. Un tempo rossiccia, ormai la barba è di un colore pallido e luminoso. Uno ha due tatuaggi sotto gli occhi. Entrambi rappresentano la stessa bestia maestosa. Se vuoi nascondere qualcosa, fallo in piena vista. Uno ha una benda sull'occhio destro. Circolano numerose storie e leggende riguardo a cosa ci sia al di sotto della benda. Nessuna di esse corrisponde a verità. Uno è decisamente più giovane degli altri. Le sue mani sono rovinate da calli e escoriazioni come i suoi compagni, ma il suo volto è solcato da decisamente meno linee del tempo. Uno è calvo. Il cranio espone una vistosa cicatrice nerastra che copre quasi tutta la parte posteriore. Nessun chierico è mai riuscito a curarla. Le radici della magia che l'ha causata hanno scavato troppo in profondità. Uno regge una penna d'oca. Davanti a sé ha diversi rotoli di pergamena intonsi e un piccolo calamaio. Alla fine della riunione brucerà tutte le pergamene, non deve rimanere traccia di cosa è stato detto. Uno ha una mano diversa dall'altra. Diversa da tutto il resto del corpo. I più pensano sia stato per scelta, pochi credono si sia trattato di una necessità. In realtà, è stata entrambe le cose. Uno sta mangiando. Un piccolo vassoio di ferro accanto a lui contiene diversa frutta di stagione. È stato un dono e sarebbe scortese non approfittarne. Uno indossa numerosi anelli. Quelli nella mano destra hanno numerose gemme incastonate e sono fatti con metalli preziosi. Quelli nella mano sinistra sono fatti di metalli poveri, ma hanno incise parole in varie lingue. Se vuoi nascondere un albero, nascondilo nella foresta.

Un secondo tavolo, più piccolo, un semicerchio di ferro e bronzo, è adiacente al primo. Ad esso siede una sola figura. Davanti a sé ha un libro rudimentale, rilegato a fatica per quanto voluminoso. Sulla sinistra, pochi fogli di pergamena, un calamaio e una penna. È l'unico autorizzato a tradurre su carta quello che verrà detto e deciso.

"Allora, Maestro delle Storie. Dall'altezza del libro ho timore che non sarà una sessione breve". L'uomo con la mano diversa è il primo a parlare. "So bene quanto apprezziate il dono della sintesi, ma purtroppo questa storia è piena di piccoli avvenimenti casuali e dettagli che potrebbero essere rilevanti. Data la natura dell'argomento, ho pensato che la precisione fosse la virtù preferibile" "La quantità di materiale che avete accumulato in così breve tempo è impressionante". L'uomo che mangia la frutta sembra al contempo stizzito e compiaciuto. "Dovete considerare che cercare la conferma di qualcosa è più facile che cercare la cosa stessa. Ciò nonostante, alcuni passaggi risultano incoerenti e di altri non ho trovato alcuna prova, né a favore né il contrario. La Fonte si è rivelata precisa e dettagliata in aspetti inconsueti, ma ciò non è conferma della sua affidabilità" "La fiducia è una materia che riguarda noi. Ciò che riguarda voi, Maestro, è fornirci le basi per un giudizio assennato". La voce dell'uomo calvo è tagliente.

L'uomo pone sul tavolo diversi fogli. Ognuno contiene il ritratto di una persona. "Artigan" "Quanzar" "Jarvis" "Dividacious" "Lyusio"

"Sono loro?". L'uomo con la piuma trascrive i nomi. "In parte. Ma è da loro che dobbiamo cominciare"

"La storia rilevante comincia poco dopo che lasciarono il Regno del Drago. All'epoca facevano parte di una banda di mercenari con a capo un certo Priadan della Torre Verde, ora è arruolato nei Vulcani. Vennero coinvolti nella cospirazione che ha scosso la Marca dei Fiumi 5 anni orsono. Lord Terem, meglio noto come il Lord Pescatore, aveva rapito il legittimo erede al trono. La banda di Torre Verde avrebbe dovuto sorvegliare il ragazzo, ma pare si sia rivoltata e lo abbiano aiutato nella fuga" "Non molto etico" borbotta l'uomo dalla folta barba. "E questo è solo l'inizio. Il loro comportamento nel tempo è stato tutto meno che etico, ma in svariate occasioni potrei spingermi a definirlo quasi onorevole." "Osservazione interessante. Sono molto incuriosito". L'uomo tatuato sembra divertito. "A seguito di quegli eventi il gruppo si divise. I cinque che vi ho detto rimasero insieme, mentre gli altri presero diverse direzioni. I più rilevanti rimangono Torre Verde, il presunto cavaliere Sir Roland di Colle Cremisi, anche se non ho trovato traccia di questo luogo in nessuna mappa. E infine, Dwayne il Monco, uno stregone. Nella speranza di far perdere le proprie tracce, si diressero a sud, nel cuore della marca. Lungo la strada ebbero modo di aiutare il venerabile Li Mu Bai, un monaco Zapaliano che ora possiede un piccolo ma rinomato monastero in quelle terre. Successivamente si scontrarono contro alcuni seguaci delle Fiamme Rivelatrici insieme a una cacciatrice di taglie chiamata Efora. Pare che incapparono per sbaglio in una delle operazioni di "inseminazione" del culto. Inutile dire che i fanatici non presero bene l'uccisione del loro cucciolo di drago e negli anni successivi operarono vari attacchi ai loro danni, quando ancora erano pressoché sconosciuti e agivano in quasi totale libertà." "Questa storia sembra ricca di personaggi secondari o sbaglio?" Non c'è malizia nella voce della figura con gli anelli, solo genuino interesse. "Efora è una delle persone che siamo riusciti a interrogare riguardo ad alcuni di questi avvenimenti. In effetti si è rivelata una risorsa preziosa ed è stata incaricata di svolgere alcuni compiti minori. Non è al corrente della natura del committente, ma è stata segnalata come potenziale e preziosa adepta. Li Mu Bai non avrà altri ruoli importanti nella storia, né siamo riusciti a ottenere alcune informazione utile da lui, ma ritengo importante evidenziare fin da subito ogni persona di rilievo con cui i soggetti sono venuti in contatto. Per sottolineare sia la loro natura, sia potenziali loro alleati." La mano diversa fa cenno di continuare, la voce la accompagna "Come al solito la tua dedizione è encomiabile maestro, prosegui pure" "Il secondo avvenimento davvero rilevante avviene a Elaba. Qui il Barone Rebdo del Passo Insanguinato, deceduto due anni fa durante la guerra coi barbari, incaricò i soggetti di risolvere e fermare una disastrosa serie di misteriosi e brutali omicidi, 48 vittime per la precisione, che stava avvenendo nella città. Ricostruire l'accaduto è stato piuttosto intricato: nelle bocche dei popolani la verità si accompagna al mito a ogni pasto. Ma l'operato dei soggetti pare fu impeccabile: nonostante il sospetto che fosse una bestia dei boschi non importunarono nessuno degli abitanti della foresta e riuscirono ad aiutare la comunità locale. La versione ufficiale dei fatti è che gli omicidi vennero commessi da un malavitoso locale, aiutato da un sicario a pagamento e dal vice conestabile. I primi due vennero condannati a morte, mentre il terzo morì nello scontro. Approfondendo alcuni dettagli poco chiari siamo però riusciti a scoprire che le morti sono probabilmente responsabilità del conestabile stesso, Lord Derken delle Terre Libere, probabilmente un licantropo. Supponiamo che i soggetti abbiano stipulato un accordo col governatore per mettere a tacere la cosa ed evitare complicazioni. Pare che un altro licantropo fosse coinvolto nella faccenda, un orso mannaro chiamato Randall, specializzato nella caccia verso i suoi stessi simili. Le poche informazioni che la fonte ha dato su di lui sono state confermate, ma non sono state sufficienti a rintracciarlo." "Ah! Un mannaro che caccia mannari! Arruoliamo! Sarebbe un perfetto animale domestico! Ahahaha" la risata scuote la barba e le sue pepite. L'uomo calvo scuote lentamente la testa.

"Questo avvenimento aprì ai soggetti le porte verso i complotti in atto nella regione. Giunti alla capitale, Fine del Dan, entrarono al servizio di Lord Jordanus Arena, leale al lord pescatore, Nei mesi di servizio successivi pare che Lyusio, l'incantatore, venne iniziato alle arti necromantiche e venne coinvolto in un paio di omicidi. Non sappiamo di preciso cosa girasse nella sua mente, ma riteniamo non sia stato coinvolto in nessun altro, ehm, incidente nei mesi successivi. Per poi fuggire e trovare asilo politico nei territori adiacenti presso Lord Mathras, il cosìdetto Lord Sanguisuga." "Un altro doppio gioco?" l'uomo tatuato sembra intrigato dal racconto. "Indubbiamente. Rebdo era infatti un lealista, e in segreto supportava il ritorno del legittimo erede. Secondo la fonte, ma non abbiamo avuto modo di verificare in alcun modo, tra i prigionieri vi era addirittura l'Ombra, nelle sembianze di un mezzorco." Dai racconti raccolti a Faro delle Pianure, la responsabilità delle morti è da imputare a diversi individui separatamente: gli esperimenti di un incantatore, un sacerdote che in segreto adorava gli inferi, lo stesso governatore, e i ribelli che gli si opponevano. Purtroppo ogni tentativo di ottenere informazioni da Dolcecolle si è risolto con la scomparsa dei nostri informatori. Riguardo al torneo, Artigan e Quanzar si qualificarono, ma non vinsero nessuno dei duelli successivi."

"Vennero assegnati come scorta a Niut l'Alto, in una missione diplomatica nelle Isole, quasi sicuramente un pretesto per evitare di attirare l'attenzione. Ebbero alcuni scontri a Ubia e Uk-Sha-Daim, ma nulla che valga la pena approfondire: nessuno dei coinvolti era rilevante e hanno tutti fatto una fine misera per un motivo o per l'altro. Vi prego di non considerarlo un evento sospetto, erano perlopiù uomini d'arme o mercenari, è la legge dei grandi numeri. E' invece utile menzionare un certo Arthur, che per un certo periodo è stato assunto come paggio da Quanzar. Al momento è sottoufficiale nella guardia cittadina delle capitale. Nutre una discreta stima nei confronti di Quanzar e non è propenso a raccontare troppo, ho ritenuto opportuno non insistere per non risultare indiscreti, ma è sicuramente una persona informata su alcuni avvenimenti. Pare che Elesya si fosse rifugiata in un remoto arcipelago, zona di caccia di diversi pirati Rakshasa, e qui abbia trovato la morte. Lyusio pedinò i soggetti fino all'arcipelago e qui ci fu uno scontro dal quale lo gnomo riuscì a scappare perdendo numerosi seguaci. Il suo piano come già saprete era quello di spezzare i sigilli del Gufo, per fare ciò intendeva sfruttare gli insegnamenti di un necromante ormai morto, Recros, ma i cui frammenti di anima erano contenuti in una collana affidata a sua figlia Elesya. A suo dire, la sua intenzione non era quella di tenere il Gufo in vita, ma anzi spezzare i sigilli per renderlo mortale e ucciderlo, ma di ciò abbiamo solo la sua parola. La parola di un necromante morto. Sulla via del ritorno ci fu un incidente diplomatico che coinvolse Niut a causa di un omicidio, ma tutto si risolse per il meglio.

I successivi incarichi del gruppo furono relativi a contrastare i piani i Lyusio. Zarken aveva recuperato alcune indicazioni dal cadavere di un suo vecchio compagno, Valar Talavir, che fu allievo di Recros. Pare che Dividacious abbia offerto la sua stessa energia vitale nel processo per evitare un disastro, ma di più nessuno sa, se non forse i soggetti stessi. Sicuro è che l'anima di Recros venne esorcizzata dagli oggetti, e non poteva più essere quindi consultata da Lyusio. Jarvis fu mandato a spiare uno studioso, Efius Mahlan, il cui nome forse vi suona familiare." "Certo, se ne è occupato uno dei miei uomini migliori" tuona la barba. "E quindi Jarvis ha sacrificato l'ultimo arrivato per salvarsi la pelle?" ghigna l'uomo con i tatuaggi vistosi. "Non conosco le dinamiche dello scontro, conosco solo il suo esito"

"Le informazioni sulla missione successiva purtroppo sono molto fumose. Sappiamo che l'Impalatore aveva proposto un'alleanza coi Sarkrith, i mangiamagia, fornendo loro schiavi in cambio di aiuto con un prigioniero. E sappiamo che l'incarico affidato al gruppo fu quello di indagare su un Sarkrith nelle terre contese, ma oltre ciò sappiamo poco. Sappiamo però che alcuni dei condottieri schiavisti cominciarono a farsi la guerra l'uno contro l'altro precisamente nel periodo in cui il gruppo era in quella zona. Ah sappiamo che a loro si unì un certo Giora, ma non abbiamo trovato alcuna informazione su di lui, supponiamo sia morto durante la missione. La missione durò diverse settimane, in cui non abbiamo idea di cosa successe, ma sappiamo che al gruppo in compenso si unì un certo Sawyer, un mago delle Isole. Ma anche il come si siano conosciuti, rimane un mistero." Il maestro delle storie capovolge un foglio bianco che era stato posto sul tavolo all'inizio. "Sawyer è tutt'ora membro del gruppo. Il risultato fu la morte di ogni cosa si trovasse nel circondario, tra cui l'intera delegazione. Però i soggetti tornarono con qualcosa. Una teca contenente qualcosa, un'entità probabilmente pericolosa che sappiamo essere rinchiusa nei sotterranei di Rocca del Faro." "Siamo sicuri che la missione col drago fosse il vero movente? E che Zarken non li abbia invece mandati a utilizzare il Prosciugatore per i suoi scopi?" il giovane è impaziente. I sigilli del Gufo non vennero spezzati, ma al contrario vennero rinnovati. E questo costò la vita di vari dei sacerdoti che Lyusio stesso aveva rapito. Non sappiamo se vennero sacrificati dai soggetti o erano già morti. E il resto lo sapete. I vostri uomini si scontrarono contro di loro poco dopo, ma ebbero salva la vita."

"Sappiamo che erano in viaggio quando ci fu l'attacco a Rocca del Faro, attacco su cui tutt'ora sappiamo pochissimo. L'unica altra informazione importante per concludere la storia è il presente. I soggetti sono tutti a Sigil. Jarvis non era con loro all'inizio, ma li ha da poco raggiunti. E stanno raccogliendo informazioni riguardo al Conte della Memoria. Che, stando alla Fonte, potrebbe avere informazioni sul Gufo."

La piuma si ferma. L'uomo tira un sospiro di sollievo. Comincia ad avere la mano indolenzita. L'uomo giovane esprime un commento. L'uomo che mangia sbrotta una risposta. Sale un vociare concitato La mano aliena alza un dito. Il vociare si muta, tutti fissano l'individuo al centro del tavolo. "Direi che una prospettiva importante è come al solito quale figura forma la luce che filtra attraverso i buchi. Quello che non siamo riusciti a scoprire forse ci può raccontare più di molti dei dettagli su cui abbiamo informazioni certe. La fonte sembra sapere dettagli estremamente insignificanti, ma è all'oscuro di dinamiche fondamentali. Maestro delle storie. Sei congedato." L'uomo raccoglie i suoi documenti. Si alza, produce un debole inchino, ed esce dalla stanza, chiudendo i pesanti portoni dietro di sé.

Il mistero di come il Maestro delle Storie sia riuscito a raccogliere così tanto materiale sugli eroi rimane per ora insoluto. Così come altri piccoli misteri: chi è questa Fonte di cui ha riferito? E perché il racconto non include alcuni importanti personaggi della storia? Perché non vi è menzione dello Stregone Nero, negromante dalla dubbia redenzione in cerca di vendetta, più volte alleato degli eroi? Perché non è menzionato l'Aquila, defunto oracolo e guida in tante missioni? Perché non sanno di come Recros abbia posseduto Dividacious per più di un anno? Perché non è stata svelata la vera natura dell'Impalatore, che altri non è che Sir Roland armato di Naxxyrix, un vecchio amico degli avventurieri ormai schiavo della lancia maledetta dello Stregone Nero?

Infine, cosa sanno gli uomini chiusi in quella stanza della vera natura del Gufo? Quali sono le intenzioni del Culto della Fiamma rivelatrice? Davvero i draghi rossi stanno per tornare? Lyusio è davvero morto? Spoiler: sì, Lyusio è morto. Abbiamo già abbastanza cattivi per le mani, non ci serve resuscitare quelli già sconfitti.

Chapter 3

The Book of Job shows how human affairs are ruled by Divine Providence using probable arguments.

"Although you hide these things in your heart, I know that you still remember everything." - (Job speaking to God)

INTRODUCTION.

This Book takes its name from the holy man, of whom it treats; who, according to the more probable opinion, was of the race of Esau, and the same as Jobab, king of Edom, mentioned Gen. xxxvi. 33. It is uncertain who was the writer of it. Some attribute it to Job himself; others to Moses, or some one of the prophets. In the Hebrew it is written in verse, from the beginning of the third chapter to the forty-second chapter. Ch. --- The beginning and conclusion are historical, and in prose. Some have divided this work into a kind of tragedy, the first act extending to C. xv., the second to C. xxii., the third to C. xxxviii., where God appears, and the plot is unfolded. They suppose that the sentiments of the speakers are expressed, though not their own words. This may be very probable: but the opinion of those who look upon the work as a mere allegory, must be rejected with horror. The sacred writers speak of Job as of a personage who had really existed, (C.) and set the most noble pattern of virtue, and particularly of patience. Tob. ii. 12. Ezec. xiv. 14. Jam. v. 11. Philo and Josephus pass over this history, as they do those of Tobias, Judith, &c. H. --- The time when Job lived is not clearly ascertained. Some have supposed (C.) that he was a contemporary with Esther; (D. Thalmud) on which supposition, the work is here placed in its chronological order. But Job more probably live during the period when the Hebrews groaned under the Egyptian bondage, (H.) or sojourned in the wilderness. Num. xiv. 9. The Syrians place the book at the head of the Scriptures. C. --- Its situation has often varied, and is of no great importance. The subject which is here treated, is of far more; as it is intended to shew that the wicked sometimes prosper, while the good are afflicted. H. --- This had seldom been witnessed before the days of Abraham: but as God had now selected his family to be witnesses and guardians of religion, a new order of things was beginning to appear. This greatly perplexed Job himself; who, therefore, confesses that he had not sufficiently understood the ways of God, till he had deigned to explain them in the parable of the two great beasts. C. xlii. 3. We cannot condemn the sentiments expressed by Job, since God has declared that they were right, (ib. v. 8) and reprimands Elihu, (C. xxxviii. 2.) and the other three friends of Job, for maintaining a false opinion, though, from the history of past times, they had judge it to be true. This remark may excupate them from the stain of wilful lying, and vain declamation. Houbigant. --- However, as they assert what was false, their words of themselves are of no authority; and they are even considered as the forerunners of heretics. S. Greg. S. Aug. &c. T. --- Job refutes them by sound logic. S. Jerom. --- We may discover in this book the sum of Christian morality, (W.) for which purpose it has been chiefly explained by S. Gregory. The style is very poetical, (H.) though at the same time simple, like that of Moses. D. --- It is interspersed with many Arabic and Chaldaic idioms; (S. Jer.) whence some have concluded, that it was written originally by Job and his friends (H.) in Arabic, and translated into Heb. by Moses, for the consolation of his brethren. W. --- The Heb. text is in many places incorrect; (Houbig.) and the Sept. seem to have omitted several verses. Orig. --- S. Jerom says almost eight hundred, (C.) each consisting of about six words. H. --- Shultens, in 1747, expressed his dissatisfaction with the labours of all preceding commentators. To explain this book may not therefore be an easy task: but we must be as short as possible. H. --- Those who desire farther information, may consult Pineda, (W.) whose voluminous work, in two folios, will nearly (H.) give all necessary information. C.

Job expresses his sense of the miseries of man's life, by cursing the day of his birth.

[1] After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day,

Post haec aperuit Job os suum, et maledixit diei suo,

[2] And he said:

et locutus est :

[3] Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said: A man child is conceived.

Pereat dies in qua natus sum, et nox in qua dictum est : Conceptus est homo!

[4] Let that day be turned into darkness, let not God regard it from above, and let not the light shine upon it.

Dies ille vertatur in tenebras; non requirat eum Deus desuper, et non illustretur lumine.

[5] Let darkness, and the shadow of death cover it, let a mist overspread it, and let it be wrapped up in bitterness.

Obscurent eum tenebrae et umbra mortis; occupet eum caligo, et involvatur amaritudine.

[6] Let a darksome whirlwind seize upon that night, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.

[24] Before I eat I sigh: and as overflowing waters, so is my roaring:

Antequam comedam, suspiro; et tamquam inundantes aquae, sic rugitus meus;

[25] For the fear which I feared hath come upon me: and that which I was afraid of, hath befallen me.

[26] Have I not dissembled? have I not kept silence? have I not been quiet? and indignation is come upon me.

Nonne dissimulavi? nonne silui? nonne quievi? Et venit super me indignatio.

Commentary:

Ver. 1. Cursed his day. Job cursed the day of his birth, not by way of wishing evil to any thing of God's creation; but only to express in a stronger manner his sense of human miseries in general, and of his own calamities in particular. Ch. --- He has these only in view: though, in another light, it is better for a man to be born, and to undergo any misery, that he may obtain eternal rewards. H. --- Some allowances must be made for extreme pain, and for the style of the Eastern (C.) poetry. H. --- Jeremias, (xx. 14.) Habacuc, (i. 2.) the psalmist, and even our Saviour in his agony, made use of such strong expressions. Mat. xxvi. 39. and xxvii. 46. Some heretics accuse Job of impatience and blasphemy. The devil, therefore came off with victory; and the praises given to Job's patience are false. He might offend by some degree of exaggeration. C. --- But even that is by no means clear. Time past could not be recalled, nor receive any injury by the maledictions. H.

Ver. 7. Praise, by the appearance of the stars. C. xxxviii. 7. C.

Ver. 8. Day. The nations of Ethiopia, under the line, curse the sun as their greatest enemy. Strabo xvii. Pliny v. 8. --- They also brave the fury of the leviathan or crocodile. C. xl. 27. and xli. 1. Ps. lxxiii. 14. The natives of Tentyra, upon the Nile, were supposed to be a terror to that monster, or they were very courageous in entangling and pursuing it. Seneca q. 4. 2. Pliny viii. 25. --- Leviathan. Prot. "their mourning." De Dieu rejects this interpretation, substituting "and thou, leviathan, rouse up," &c. The fathers generally understand the devil to be thus designated. Sept. "he who is about to seize the great whale," (H.) or fish, which they also explain of the conflict of Satan with Jesus Christ." Origen, &c.

Ver. 10. Nor took. Sept. "for it would then have freed my eyes from labour."

Ver. 11. In the. Heb. "from the womb," (H.) or as soon as I was born. C. --- He seems to have lost sight of original sin, (v. 1.) or there might be some method of having it remitted to children unborn, which we do not know. H.

Ver. 12. Knees, by my father or grandfather. Gen. xxx 3. Iliad ix. C.

Ver. 13. Sleep. So death is often styled.

Olli dura quies oculos et ferreus urget

Somnus: in æternam clauduntur lumina noctem. Æneid x.

Ver. 14. Consuls. Heb. "counsellors," or any in great authority. Sept. "kings, the counsellors of the land, who rejoiced, boasting of their swords." The same word, choraboth, (H.) means both swords and solitudes. D. --- Those great ones had prepared their own tombs, which were usually in solitary places; (C.) or they had filled all with their extensive palaces; and removed the people to a distance. H.

Ver. 15. Houses, while alive; (C.) or their tombs were thus enriched with silver, (M.) as this practice was not uncommon, v. 22. Joseph. xiii. 15. --- Marcian forbade it. S. Chrys. complains it subsisted in his time. Orat. Annæ. C.

Ver. 16. Light; dying in the womb. He expresses a desire that he had been thus prevented from feeling his present miseries and danger of sin. H.

Ver. 17. Tumult. In the grave they can no longer disturb the world. M. --- In strength. Sept. "in body." Both heroes and labourers then find rest, (C.) if they have lived virtuously. H.

Ver. 18. Bound in chains, like incorrigible slaves, (C.) or debtors. Cocceius. --- These were formerly treated with great severity. Luke xii. 59. C.

Ver. 21. Not. The feel the same eagerness for death as those who seek for a treasure; (C.) and when death is at hand, they rejoice no less than those who discover a grave, in which they hope to find some riches, v. 15. 22.

Ver. 22. Grave, full of stores, or the place where they may repose. H.

Ver. 23. To. Why is life given to? &c. The uncertainty whether a man be worthy of love or hatred, (EcclI. ix. 1.) and whether he will persevere to the end, is what fills Job with distress; though we must trust that God will suffer none to be tempted above their strength. 1 Cor. x. 13. --- He finds himself surrounded with precipices, and in the dark. C. --- So God often tries this faithful servants. D.

Ver. 24. Sigh, through difficulty of swallowing, (Pineda) or sense of misery. H.

Ver. 25. Fear. In prosperity he feared the assaults of pride. Now he is in danger of yielding to impatience and despair. C.

Ver. 26. Dissembled my sufferings, making no complaint, not only during the seven days that his friends had been with him, but long before. Heb. and Sept. "I was not in safety, nor at rest; neither was I indolent: (H. in the administration of affairs. C.) yet trouble came." H. --- I have enjoyed no peace, since the wrath of the Lord has found me. C. --- In such a situation, Job might well beg to be delivered, (H.) and to pray that those things which obstructed his repose in God might be removed; considering them not so much as the works of God, as the effects of sin. Pineda. W. - In this light he cursed his birth-day, and will no longer look upon it as a joyful and happy day. D.
