In a Muay Thai sparring session, it is essential to wear protective gear to prevent injury. The more you get better at sparring, the more success you will have preparing for a real fight. The most important thing to keep in mind sparring is a fun process. Enjoy the learning process and make new friends. For your and your training partner’s safety don’t step into a first sparring session without the permission of your instructor. I know I clown Ratohnhaké:ton for his bad posture, but when you fight a LOT, that tucked-chin, slightly-hunched fighting posture REALLY creeps into your everyday life. Man if Kyokushin people spent half the time they spent on kata on punching to the head & head movement and the other half on wrestling/grappling they'd be the scariest people on the planet. It's such a weird set of gaps to build into your system when you're so tough everywhere else.

Today I had the best sparring EVER, and 2 dudes (one very muscular, the other has been doing the sport for a year more than me, both taller than me) complimented me because I'm strong and I'm ajbdjsosnsgsiosjs
Like the second dude told me that he only struggles against me and I was blushing and giggling while we beat the shit out each other and like I'm extremely anxious about not being good at muay thai so this really made my day <3333

when i was a child i liked combat sports; i took martial arts classes (i forget which form) and i competed in fencing. i had to stop when i went to highschool because we didn't have time for it anymore. after leaving highschool i met a girl who did boxing and i planned to go and sign up at her gym to learn it with her, but i became too ill and it never happened. still, it had reignited my interest in combat sports and i would talk about it with people. i told one guy that i liked the look of Muay Thai; he expressed a common view, which was that martial arts like this sucked, because they were impractical in a real fight. he liked Krav Maga because it was real.
[long-ish post about fighting]
and i always objected to that kind of thinking! look here: it's true that much of the game which is played on the mat is produced by the restrictions placed on combatants. even in a very permissive sport like MMA, the great importance of ground fighting to that sport is produced by the restriction on fish-hooks and head kicks. thus, you can say that even these fights 'aren't real' in some sense. but how often are you ever going to be in a fight where you're willing to rip the other guy's cheek out, gouge out his eyes and so forth? Krav Maga was first developed for Jews to defend themselves from anti-semitic mobs in the 1930s. i know that some of you have certainly been in fights like that; but not all fights are that existentially serious. even in fights where there is such a high level of emnity there are often factors which restrain the fight from becoming an existential one. if you live somewhere that fascists are embedded and you blind one of theirs in a fight you might expect retribution; likewise you would be guilty of a felony and might get in real trouble. apprehensions like this might stay your hand—and already you are engaging in a kind of combat which is to some extent governed by extra-martial rules that produce a to some extent artificial situation.
of course, some martial arts will be more useful to know in the kind of combat games you are likely to play even so, and Muay Thai has not suddenly become more useful than Krav Maga on the basis of what i said. but i think that it is common to 1. underestimate the usefulness of even highly artifical combat sports, like fencing, and 2. overstate the utility of various 'self-defence' techniques, especially blinding, because the artificial, rules-governed nature of real fights is forgotten.
on point one, i would always credit my fencing experience with my success at fighting in highschool. i would sometimes even adopt the pose—one hand back, foot pointed forward—and people would (jokingly) say, 'it's [her] style! [she's] the fencer!' this part was not really useful; these fights were between friends and featured no emnity; we wanted to entertain the crowd, so there was a certain amount of kayfabe. but we were teenagers and behaved badly; once blows began we really hurt each other, and i even sent a few kids to the hospital (one with a concussion and the other with a wounded leg). plus, secret feelings of jealousy and resentment could be awakened during the course of the fight, so more emnity was felt as the fight grew more serious. what i thought really helped me from all the fencing matches was simply the sparring experience. when another living person attacks you without relenting, watches your movements for openings, and tries to stop whatever you do to them, it's difficult not to be overwhelmed and confused. being able to keep a level head, comprehend the situation and make decisions in the moment gave me an advantage over less experienced friends.
on the second point, i had older male friends who gave me a lot of advice that i can now recognize was plainly bad advice. for example, a girl i had a crush on had an older brother who always gave me and her other friends a hard time. i hated him so much i wanted to do something about him. so my friend told me that when fighting a larger and stronger opponent, i should do this... and this... a lot of techniques that had i really gone and done it would have left him permanently blind and disfigured. how do you think my crush would have felt if i went and did all that to her brother? these 'real' street fighting techniques were not useful in a real fight—a fight with stakes proportional to my real situation. when i did end up in situations with existential stakes (you know the stories) these techniques did nothing for me, since i would be alone against multiple attackers, or the other guy had frightening connections, or there was an asymmetry of power (who teaches 'defense against a guy in a car'?). in all cases the only wothwhile advice i ever got was this: you cannot run away in high heels.
similarly, when we had our low-stakes fights at school, the crowd would call out for me to punch the other guy in the face, or to kick him when he was down. afterwards they were disappointed that i didn't 'really go for him.' all this kind of talk really got to me; i would be standing there, facing my opponent and saying to myself, 'do it! do it!' in the end i never punched anyone in the face or tried any kind of dirty fighting at all. for this i hated myself so much. i was furious with myself; i would sit down and be angry at myself for a long time. i considered myself a coward and a weakling because i wouldn't go 'all in.' i didn't 'have the guts.' actually, what i felt was compassion for another person, and it was not a contemptable restraint at all. what was i trying to do—what was i trying to become? i think this is a way you can be misled by the discourse around 'real fighting.'

Listen…please…I need more Katsumi and tomboy gf reader hc’s…
I get it. I do. Tomboys are an acquired taste. So let’s do this.
Yandere Baki Head Canons
Orochi Katsumi x Afab Childhood rival reader
Tumblr media
……………………………………………
You were the small childhood punk that lived up the street from him. You always picked a fight with him every chance you had. And somehow, you always won (which hurt his younger self’s ego). You were scrappy and a vicious Muay Thai fighter. Your father had adopted you as his protégée (much like Doppo adopted him)
Everyday after school, the two of you would get into it and be covered in mud. Your parents constantly had to pull the two of you off each other
And then the day came that you threw a rock at his head and told him you were going to move away the next day. A loud promise rung out from your little chest that when you returned, you’d defeat him again. And Katsumi never forgot that promise. He didn’t want to lose to a runt like you ever again
So imagine his surprise all these years later and you stand before him as a woman? This whole time he had though you were a little boy from how you dressed and how short you hair was but no… you were a woman… and he developed an instant crush
You were still a rambunctious thing and even more deadly. Katsumi could barely dodge your devastating blows but he gained the upper hand once he pinned you to the ground. He smirked down at you while you snarled at him. He did it… he finally beat you- and then you gave his boys a firm squeeze and he jumped off of you so fast
And then you defeated him with a kick square the the head. Katsumi laid on the dojo floor while you sat on top of him with your hands above his head. He was humiliated and yet… he had never been so turned on
Katsumi spars with you more frequently and he begins a friendship of sorts with you. Katsumi hangs on your every word. He finds himself staring at your lips more often than not
It doesn’t help that you’re clueless but that’s okay. Katsumi can be patient

Can I humbly request 141 and los vaqueros maybe Koenig to reacting to reader being trained in Muay Thai like Annie Leonhart style
Okay imagine
Reader is already very muscular(👁️🫦👁️) and is known for being super tough but training rolls around specifically sparring and again eren and Annie situation she’s underestimated then absolutely
D E C K S T H E M
She just fake jabs then throws them over her shoulder then restrains with her thighs 🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️
Sorry if this is to vague it’s just an idea I’ve had in my mind for a while 😅😅
Of course! Sorry if this is a bit inaccurate to the Annie Leonhart. I’m not really into that type of stuff but I do know some stuff about Mauy Thai.
Tumblr media
Ghost
So you were currently about to go spar and ‘gain more knowledge on techniques’ as your boyfriend would say. So you grabbed your small duffel bag with your drink, hand towel and gym necessities inside. You walked into the almost empty gym the only soul being there was Simon.
You dropped your bag by his and he turned around hearing your bag. He spoke “ready, love?” You nodded and walked over to him.
You had been sparring and such with Ghost for a while. He would easily find a tactic to knock you down or get you into a weak headlock. So you were getting annoyed at yourself and decided to show a side that you have never showed before.
You both got into a stance and you threw a fake jab, which he threw a real one. You moved to the side, you dodged another Ghost punch then you shin kicked him in the side of his leg right by the back of his knee. Causing him to go down. Then you saw he quickly got back up, you grabbed and managed to flip him over you. You got on top of Simon and you used your legs to restrain him and then put him into a fake headlock.
Once he tapped, you rolled over and looked at him. He said “since when could you do that?” You replied “since I learnt Muay Thai” he looked at you as if you had just said something outrageous. He asked “when did you do that?” You answered “since about seven?” He said “and only now you tell me?” You nodded and said “well, I don’t really do it much anymore” Ghost quickly said “you should” you smiled and gave him a kiss.
Soap
You were in your room when you heard a knock. You beckoned them in and it was Soap. He spoke “come on, we got sparring” you rolled your eyes and got up leaving your phone on your bed.
Once you two got into the gym you both went over to the boxing ring. You spoke “ready?” He nodded and you both started throwing punches and tactical moves.
You saw he was about to throw a punch so you put your forearm up and then dodged his punch and then you followed it with two elbows and then kicked him in the calf. He stopped for a second and said “what was that?” You responded “Muay Thai?” Making more of a question for him. He asked “you do Muay Thai?” You nodded and he said “damn, that’s badass” you smirked and said “why thank you” as you two sparred he’d ask about you and Muay Thai.
In the end you ended up teaching him a few moves of your own.
Gaz
You weren’t actually training, well with one of the 141 boys. You were training with a recruit who knew Muay Thai. You stumbled across the girl and found it fascinating when you saw her practicing. You loved that another woman was doing something you did so you offered to teach and spar.
They mentioned they were slightly knew to the sport so you offered to train them considering you had been doing it for years. So today you asked if she wanted to do it and she happily agreed.
You two were in the ring for a while when you both heard the door open. But you two continued to do your thing. You didn’t realise it was your boyfriend Gaz.
He watched you in awe as you did your thing. He always did, he loved how focused you can get and how much you always put your energy and effort into things like this.
Once you told her she could have a break. You turned around to see Gaz, you smiled and waved considering you had your gum shield in. He asked “how’s it going?” You took your gum shield out and answered “great” he said “what are you doing? I thought it was boxing at first but you two started kicking and shit” you replied “Muay Thai” his eyes widen at the fact his girlfriend does such a badass and lethal sport.
He asked “since when did you do that?” You answered “since I was a kid, I got videos and everything” he smirked and said “could I watch some of them, then?” You nodded and said “even got photos.”
After your sparring you two went to your room and you showed a small photo box of you in oversized shorts since you were so little. You showed him photos of you with your parents. You then cuddled up on your bed as you two watched younger you do Muay Thai.
Price
Once again, you were actually training. You had been trying to teach the new recruits stuff. But the boys being boys didn’t behave or really listen. It made you annoyed since you had to take time out of your day to try and teach these boys who only messed around and made inappropriate comments about you.
So what you always did was go to the gym late in the night and take your anger out on the bag.
You were in the gym when you heard a door open. There were only a few people every so often who would train as late as you did. But it wasn’t someone who wanted to train, it was Price.
You stopped when you heard “love? What are you doing?” You turned to see him walking over. You looked down at the ground. You whispered “taking my anger out” he lifted your chin up and asked “how come?” You answered “those boys I had to teach today, they did my nut in. All they did was taking the piss out of everything and making snarky comments about me.” Price spoke “so you did?” You said “take my anger out on the bag.” He asked “right, but were you actually doing? it looked different to what you actually do” you said “Muay Thai, I grew up on the sport but since the army I don’t do it as often.” He raised an eyebrow and asked “you did Muay Thai? Never thought you did that? Come on let’s go get some tea and you can tell me how you got into the sport” you smiled knowing that Price knew exactly how to make you better when you felt angry or sad.
That’s why you love him.
Alejandro
You both were actually home, you were in the make shift gym you both had.
You were sparring on the punching bag, once you did that for a bit you decided to do some shadow Muay Thai.
Alejandro was on the phone with his mother when she had mentioned of a family bbq and she wanted Alejandro and you to go. Since she first met you she loved you. And she will invite you to anything. So she asked if Alejandro and you wanted to join the family cook out. And he said you two would go.
So he went to the gym where you currently were. You were still shadow boxing when he came in. He shouted “mi amor! Madre was wondering if you wanted to come to the family cook out!” As he walked in he saw you Muay Thai boxing was was shocked. He never knew you could do such martial art.
He called out “Y/n!” You finally heard him so you turned around. You smiled and waved. Taking your gloves off you walked over to Alejandro and said “what did you say? Sorry I was too focused” he smirked and said “it’s fine, was you just doing Muay Thai?” You smiled proudly and spoke “yeah, you know about it?” He nodded and said “an old friend of mine used to do it.” He asked “since when did you do it?” You said “probably five years? Maybe six?” He nodded and said “my mother asked if you wanted to join the family cook out? I told her we’d go” you smiled and said “of course! Is everyone going?” He nodded and you smiled. You loved his family they were so close together and did everything together you loved it.
Rudy
It was once again another sparring session with Rudy. He always went easy on you, he didn’t want to hurt you. Although you were very muscular you still had feelings, that was his excuse.
But today you told him to go full force on you. You spoke “forget who I am in this sparring session. Pretend I’m a massive man you need you fight off” he nodded hesitantly.
So sparring had begun, you started punching him and he punched you. It went back and forth for a while.
But half way through you could feel him starting to be more gentle so you smirked and rolled your eyes. He was about to through a punch but you were quicker. You kicked him in the rib and then round housed kicked him. You then followed that with knee to the stomach.
He looked at you as if you had just murdered someone. He was gob smacked, he asked “where on earth did you learn that? Querida” you answered “I do Muay Thai” he asked again “since when?” You said “uh two years?” He nodded and decided it wasn’t a bad idea on not going soft.
König
König never thought you had wanted to go against him in a spar. Not just because of your relationship but because you two are completely polar opposites. He was tall and you were short, he had a wider range of arm motion and you didn’t but did that stop you from asking? No.
So you both got into the ring and started, you had a good few punches to the face from König but he felt terrible. He stopped and said “should we stop? I don’t want to hurt you, maus” you shook your head and spoke “I’ll have my comeback don’t you worry” he hesitated and started back up again.
What he didn’t know was you were about to pull a move he never knew you could pull. You kicked his calf twice and jumped onto his thigh and got your legs on his shoulders and got him into a head lock with your thighs.
Once he tapped he got you down and you said “sorry if I went rapid mode on you, I was wondering if I still had it in me” he raised an eyebrow and asked “where did you learn that?” You answered “I used to do Muay Thai” he said “how come you didn’t tell me?” You said “I would’ve but it never really came into conversation” he nodded and you started to tell him everything as you both walked out of the gym.
Hope you enjoyed!
Ik some of these most likely aren’t actually moves in Muay Thai so I apologise if I offended any Muay Thai people or anything. Once again I don’t do the sport so I don’t have much knowledge on it.
Have a good day/night!🫶

Gun Park x Reader: colleagues to lovers
Tumblr media
Being bored whilst bodyguarding isn't a bad thing. That just means there's no problems. Your fists are itchy though.
"This is what you do all day? Just sit around and wait for Crystal's meetings to finish?" Gun looks at you like you're an annoying little gnat and ignores you. This bastard. "And put that cigarette out it stinks"
You pick up on the ins and outs of your job easily. Afterall you are a professional. The one thorn in your side though is Gun. He's your senior so you begrudgingly show him respect but you hate the way he looks at you with those black eyes, like he's constantly sizing you up. Seeing whether you're worth the hunt.
You tend to spend your night shifts with Gun at the old school. Both making routine rounds to make sure there are no break ins. When there's nothing else to do he is on his phone and straight out ignoring you.
Tonight you look over his shoulder and see him watching on old fight on newtube "that brekdak is something else" you say. Gun seems surprised you know who it is. "I've never seen anything like his 65th title defense match" all Gun can respond with is "huh."
You bond over all sorts of fighting styles and techniques. Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Kyokushin, Muay Thai. You realise this man lives and breathes fighting and nothing excites him more than a worthwhile opponent. You more than meet his expectations. You now spar during quiet days. You learn how to move against each other and together, finding each other's strengths and weaknesses.
You and Gun have now partnered together in real fights more times than you can count. Individually you were formidable, but together you are unstoppable. You work well together, watching each other's back, blocking stray hits from landing and your fighting styles develop to complement each other.
Still nothing can ever be perfect and injuries happen. You tend to each other carefully and efficiently, making sure the other heals quickly. You look out for each other and Gun is gentle with you in a way you didn't think he was capable of.
The final stand off with DG is particularly frustrating. You are waiting in the car, watching and ready to leap out if something went awry but it ends in a stalemate. Gun might have already beat up the other crews, but he returns back still antsy and itching for a fight.
"That was rough" you say when he gets in "what you going to do now?" He looks at you with an inscrutable expression but you're wary "don't think you can let off steam by trying to beat me up"
Gun runs his hands through his usually perfect hair, as if weighing something up. He takes a deep breath then turns to you and says "I can think of something else, do you want me to show you?"
You're intrigued. What does this demon do that could compare to fighting. "what is it?"
He moves closer. His rough hand lightly tilts your chin up to him "are you sure you want to know?"
You are curious if you both move in other ways as well as you fight
"Show me"

Random tips for writing a martial artist!
The ruleset for the competitive form of their style (ie Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Wrestling, etc...) will inform how that character approaches fighting. For example, Karate where points are awarded based on how many hits you land means that fighter might prioritize keeping someone at a distance, whereas in Knockdown Karate where victory is achieved through a KO that fighter may prioritize trying to pummel someone with close range attacks
A mixed martial artist will often have a "base" style. This is usually their first style and then they build around it by taking techniques from other styles in hopes of creating their own effective blend. Common base styles in MMA include Boxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and Muay Thai. In the last decade there's also been a wave of Karate practitioners joining MMA as well.
Related to the first two points, no two styles are fully comparable and no style is better than another. However, styles that pressure test their practitioners with a healthy dose of sparring and competitions will generally produce more competent fighters. After all, you don't get good at what you don't practice! So if you're writing a fight, the fighter with a more pressure tested background will probably come out on top more often than not.
Disabled martial artists exist, and also compete in tournaments. For example, in Paralympic Judo, the only difference is the fighters start off grabbing each other's uniform and the referee saying certain commands outloud so the fighters know to return to the center or avoid the edge of the arena.
In real life, fights between two experienced fighters are less like in movies where two characters are constantly rushing each other with few pauses. Generally, two fighters will try to feel each other out, making on the fly risk assessments with periodic high intensity exchanges. This is generally known as "explosiveness" in martial arts. Those on the higher end of explosiveness tend to resemble all out brawls more but the characters are still doing risk assessment with periodic lulls in the action. That said, this is a stylistic choice for the author, so you don't really need to consider this one if you're more interested in Rule of Cool.
A blackbelt in Japan typically does not mean the same thing it means in the West. In Japan, the first degree blackbelt is usually just a sign that you are now competent (and thus tourney-ready). It is not uncommon for a Japanese martial artist to get their shodan (first degree blackbelt) at an early age based on how many training hours they clock. Furthermore, most Japanese martial arts only have white and black belts. The colored grading system is largely a western invention to serve as a motivational tool.
Size matters. You might hear a lot about how size doesn't matter but that's just not true. A larger person has an advantage that can't be ignored. However, there are ways around this and a smaller fighter can still win. Typically, this requires the smaller fighter to keep larger foes in mind when they're training. It also requires them to strategize around their larger opponent's advantage. This applies specifically to two trained fighters. A smaller well trained person is still much more likely to defeat a larger, untrained enemy.
I want to stress these aren't rules or a do's and don't list, it's just tips for writing martial artists. You can also just disregard everything here because you're free to go hog wild. That said, I hope this can be useful to people wanting to write fights.

if you went through what 87 Irma did, becoming like Nadia seems like a natural character development tbh, another unflappable new yorker with the stuff to back it up
Keno primarily specializes in arnis, muay thai in that order
spars with Leo since they’re both, technically, dual wielders

still paying for stepping on Raph’s foot That One TIme (nod to SotO)
Irma likes moths, it’s Her Thing, her motif; a nod to the time she was mutated into a moth monster in 87
