ROSE: When I was 5, I wanted to watch The Lion King every day, but I would cry miserably about Mufasa every time. And when my mom would try to comfort me, I'd get embarrassed and tell her I wasn't crying, my eyes just hurt, and she'd be like, "ur eiys alawys seem to hurt at thispart" and I was like, "Yes… because of my mysterious disease…"

On November 27th at around 9 pm, my precious little baby suddenly died. In my arms. It was so quick we couldn’t do anything, his breathing slowed down until it stopped and I literally saw the light leaving his eyes.
Everything went to shit ever since…

steve: hey, eddie, should i o— wait, are you crying?
eddie burying his face inside the hood of his hoodie and sniffling: no, 'm not.
steve glancing at the laptop: are you crying over a cartoon movie?
eddie glaring at steve: oh, let's see how you'll be like, then!
steve, shrugging: okay, i never cry over movies, eds, so that's a competition you already lost.
*later*
steve full-on sobbing: i just don't understand why they would kill mufasa?
eddie comforting steve, crying silently: yeah, i know, stevie.
steve: like, what did he ever do? he was just a lion, man!
eddie: i would say 'i told you so', but i'm a good boyfriend.
steve: ... you still said it, eds.
eddie: right... then, i told you so.

Okay, but just tell me that Miles G. wouldn't have burst into tears watching The Lion King. ESPECIALLY at the moment of Mufasa's death.
I don't believe you.

in all honesty, the lion king is maybe the best theatre performance i've ever seen. it was so beautiful! so colorful! every costume so so so thoughtfully done and creative and just plain fun. it was so much fun! the sheer amount of work and artistry and perfect timing and sheer skill that goes into every single performance is frankly awe-inspiring. if you can see it live you absolutely should, it's worth every penny.

Character ask: Mufasa (The Lion King)
Favorite thing about them: What a wonderful king and father he is. So benevolent, so wise, knowing when to be stern, when to be gentle, and when to be lighthearted and playful, so brave and fierce as a fighter, yet "only brave when he has to be," and so warm and loving to his son and willing to fight with his life to protect him. In him, the filmmakers made sure to create a character we would love and admire, for himself as well as because he's Simba's beloved father – it's no wonder that his death is possibly Disney's most heartbreaking moment.
Least favorite thing about them: Hmmm.... I guess I'll say his letting Simba practice his pouncing on Zazu, when Zazu clearly finds it uncomfortable and humiliating, even if it is funny.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I try to respect all creatures.
*I can be lighthearted and playful, but at other times serious and spiritual.
*I have long, thick hair.
Three things I don't have in common with them:
*I'm not a parent.
*I don't have a murderously jealous brother.
*I'm human.
Favorite line:
"Before sunrise he's your son."
"Everything the light touches is our kingdom."
"A king's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Simba, the sun will set on my time here, and will rise with you as the new king."
"Simba, let me tell you something my father told me. Look at the stars. The great kings of the past look down on us from those stars... So whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you. And so will I."
"Remember who you are. You are my son and the one true king. Remember who you are... Remember..."
brOTP: Simba, Zazu, and Rafiki.
OTP: Sarabi.
nOTP: Simba, Nala, or Scar.
Random headcanon: Before Simba was born, Mufasa and Sarabi had trouble conceiving, and/or had another cub who died in infancy. They seem older when Simba is born than Simba and Nala are when Kiara is born, and Mufasa seems too wise and secure in his role as king to have newly assumed the throne. So my guess is that Simba was a "miracle baby." This is also fitting because the production team admitted that Simba's journey was influenced by the Bible story of Joseph, son of Jacob, and Joseph was also born after his mother was barren for many years.
Unpopular opinion: I'm not opposed to his new backstory in the upcoming prequel. I know that some Lion King fans are up-in-arms at the idea of Mufasa having been an orphan who came from nothing, because it contradicts all the well-established fanon about his childhood and Scar's too. But first of all, this prequel will only be canon for the 2019 remake, not for the original 1994 film or the Broadway musical. Secondly, none of the popular fanon details about Mufasa and Scar's childhoods (e.g. that their parents were named King Ahadi and Queen Uru, or that Scar's original name was Taka) were ever official canon. They came from an early spinoff book that Disney has always ignored. Third, it's clear that with this "commoner orphan cub" backstory, Disney is trying to address one of the complaints often aimed at The Lion King. Namely that it glorifies hereditary monarchy and conservative power structures, with the "rightful kings" who were born into privilege and power as the heroes, and vilifying the underdogs who try to change the status quo. I've personally never minded that aspect, because the original Lion King has the feel of a myth; it's not a political tract for humans. But I do understand the complaints, so I don't mind the fact that Disney is trying to answer them by portraying the young Mufasa as an underdog who rose to kingship through his own merit.
Song I associate with them:
"They Live in You" from the stage musical.
youtube
Its reprise, "He Lives in You" (also heard in The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride)
youtube

The first thing the lion felt when he woke up was a rather sharp pain on the back of his paws. However, when his eyes were open, he also noted how the world around him seemed blurred. Slowly, he sat up, his body feeling heavy and in pain. Looking down, he saw four vertical scars crossing the back of his paws, which were the cause of his pain there.
However, the most notable thing seemed to be his confusion. What was he doing there? What was this place? What had happened to his paws? Why did he feel so hurt and sore?
...Who was he?
Although he didn't show any other visible wounds, his muscles felt tight and numb, as if he had suffered a tremendous fall, or as if he had been trampled viciously. For this reason, as he walked, he couldn't feel his toes correctly, causing them to show their claws immediately. He got out from the place he was in, and walked around in various circles, dazed and disoriented, looking for someone to help him.
But there was no one. He lifted his head, looking at the towering edge of the gorge, wondering about the circumstances of his whereabouts. The sun of morning seemed to slowly rise from the horizon, painting the gorge in a dim purple-ish light.
In silence, the forgotten king simply decided to keep walking forward. Even if he couldn't remember who he was, how he got there or what had happened to him... he couldn't stay here.
It's not my first time drawing Mufasa, but it's actually the first time I managed to draw him in a way that I consider to be mostly correct? His mane is still difficult to draw and I'm not 100% satisfied with it, but at least he's recognizable. This is an AU I came up with after getting back into TLK mood, although I'm pretty positive other people have probably played with the idea before - what if Mufasa had just been knocked out instead of dying, and got subsequent amnesia, therefore forgetting who he is? I know, I know, ''but plotholes/it doesn't make sense/Simba would've noticed'' blah blah- whatever, I'm just having fun with ideas lolol.
I actually intend to explore the idea more in future drawings, so stay tuned~
For Tumblr users: this is the first time I upload TLK-related art on here (that isn't an animalization or crossover), because I wasn't sure how it was gonna be received. But seeing as generally my other TLK crossover art is well-received, I thought it'd be a good idea to also share regular TLK art here, starting now.
The background is from the first movie.

Pre-Lion King Headcanons BC I'm Bored
TW for mentions of death & miscarriages:
King Mohatu is asexual and is the father of Uru through sperm banking & donations (which exist in my HC, and is manufactured by the Mjuzi/primates, don't judge me).
Ahadi and Uru have a 4 year age gap. Both were in their 20's [in human years] when they met (Ahadi being 21, and Uru being 25). They wouldn't become parents to Mufasa & Askari II until 2 years later (which means that Uru herself wouldn't be able to
Mufasa is autistic and Sarabi has ADHD. Both are overthinkers, but they help each other through their struggles (additionally, Rafiki, Zazu, and Sarafina comfort them).
Scar's greed and desire for more power were a result of being given too much power as a child. After the premature death of his uncle, the previous leader of the Lion Guard, Scar got the Roar shortly after the mourning period. Scar eventually got over the loss of his uncle and embraced his newfound power, but being given so much power, popularity, & privilege amongst the pride and his birthland, with very few limitations at such a young age made him more egotistical, and through his mother's coddling (which was a product of her own trauma of losing her sibling), he decided that the Roar of the Elders wasn't enough.
Scar gave himself his trademark scar and spread several rumors throughout the Pridelands with different stories as to how he got his scar, believing that the gossip would boost his popularity. Unfortunately, one of those fake stories involved Scar being scarred by Mufasa, which Mufasa himself had to shut down to avoid false allegations. Scar would continue lying about how he got his scar until the moment he died.
Sarabi is a barbary lion from the Sahara Desert: Sarabi's birth pride was purely patriarchal, so as per tradition, in order to retain her status as a Princess, she was sent to the Pridelands in order to be conditioned to be the co-ruler of the Pridelands.
Sarabi and Sarafina were romantically involved with one another during their adolescence. Mufasa kept their love a secret, wanting both of them to be happy. Eventually, the two broke up and Sarabi and Mufasa were wed. Their relationship was loveless for several years until they grew affectionate with one another.
Uru fell ill after returning home from a journey to find a new source of water for the Dry Season. She fought it for several years until she succumbed to the disease when her sons were nearing the end of their teen years.
Simba's uncle in the comic "The Unusual Choir" is Mufasa and Scar's half-brother. Askari II disappeared months prior to Uru's return + death, and Mufasa fell into a depression, so Ahadi made an arrangement to bear a child that will be a backup for Mufasa. Mufasa's half-brother disowned his spot as royalty out of sheer disinterest.
Ahadi died not too many years after Uru, as he was killed during a patrol by hyenas, explaining Mufasa's hatred of the hyena clan.
Sarabi and Mufasa attempted to have children prior to Simba. Most ended in failure, whilst others were stillborns. Simba fortunately was an exception:
Rafiki is genderfluid/enby.
