Reeves’ Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi)

Conservation Status- Least Concern

Habitat- Southeastern China; Taiwan

Size (Weight/Length)- 18 kg; 50 cm

Diet- Berries; Nuts; Fungus; Flowers; Carrion; Bird eggs

Cool Facts- Despite being a furry little guy, the Reeves’ muntjac isn’t afraid to show you who’s boss. These solitary deer make their presence known through their distinctive, barking call. When males are threatened, they immediately go on the offensive. Despite their short stature, Reeves’ muntjac are relatively bulky and can push predators and other muntjacs away with their sharp antlers. Once the softer parts are exposed, the muntjac will sink its 5 centimeter long fangs into the threat. The Reeves’ muntjac has been introduced in both the United Kingdom and Japan, being coined an invasive species due to their ability to eat anything from plants to roadkill.

Southern red muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak)

Formerly known as the Indian or common muntjac, this deer lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. And they’re quite weird. They sport two pairs of large, disturbing-looking scent glands on their faces, which they use to mark their territory. They also have the least chromosomes of any mammal, females with a diploid number of 6 and males with 7. This is about 40 less than their very close relative, the reeve’s muntjac, and 1-2 less chromosomes than a fruit fly!

New favorite animal: the muntjac

I discovered this little not-deer randomly on the mia subreddit, and they really fascinated me because of their scents glads on their foreheads and under their tear ducts. They can open and close on command and it looks so cool!!! Never knew there were animals like this :3

so I've been reading entirely too many of @bogleech's Pokemon reviews and lamenting the relative lack of creepy fungi Pokemon in the franchise as a whole, and then I saw a muntjac deer with its open face glands for the first time and well, here we are

I call it Mushjack. The white eye spots on the face aren't actually eyes; the real eyes are in the glands between the eye spots.

It's grass/poison and of course it learns spore.

The muntjac deer is one of my favourite freaks of nature and here is why.

look at this skull. looks like a fucking dragon, right? 

WRONG. ITS A MUNTJAC SKULL

These bastards are some of the weirdest freaks you’ll see. on their face, they have scent glands for marking on trees. Instead of doing what almost every other animal does and peeing to mark their territory, they evolved these body horror style glands on their face to do it.

They have fangs. why?  because they can. The males use them in territory and breeding fights, but they’re really not as useful as they look. But they’re sometimes called vampire deers, so thats fun.

They bark. like a dog. or they just scream like my dad does when he stubs his toe. 

Heres some other short little fun facts! - they smell absolutely dreadful! - Indian Muntjac have fewer chromosomes than a fruit fly! - they aren’t very big at all! like, 52 cm, which is pretty small for a deer.
