Top 100: July 2022
This came out a bit late as I've been catching up to lots of changes in my life. Plus, the emotional instability from June leaked into July and August. That seems to have reflected in my tastes. This past month, Michigan by Sufjan Stevens rose from #44 to #5. It's been an album I've been playing on repeat, pretty much. There are many songs I enjoy from it, but if I had to choose one that I absolutely loved, it's "Say Yes! to M!ch!gan!". Can't think of anything sweeter that I've heard recently. Another notable entrance is Charmed by DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ, a rather lengthy plunderphonic house album. The song "Love Foundation" has literally been on repeat in my head since I first heard it. It's a very emotionally refreshing song. Other notable changes: Godflesh - Post Self is my new workout and Berserk reading music. I finally gave full listens to both Slint albums, and they're obviously both top tier. I liked Tweez a little bit more, though. Q and Not U, a D.C. post-hardcore act I'd never heard of, has broken into my top 50 and has a good chance of rising, given my listening so far in August. MF Grimm's beautiful songwriting in The Downfall of Ibilys: A Ghetto Opera comes to mind as something to check out.

Sisters Crystal Wilson Blackmon and Penni Wilson, the singer-songwriter duo known as  Crystal Penny, have released a new song, “Standards,” a timeless R&B tune brought to life by their trademark vocal harmonies, an engaging melody and lyrics that praise the legendary divas of soul music.
Already embraced by UK audiences, Crystal Penny’s new single is a follow-up to their original soul classic recordings (performed under the group name The Lovations) that have gone viral and will be available on all music app platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon starting April 21, 2023.
The core sentiment of their new single is a celebration of the Queens of the Quiet Storm. Many of these legendary ladies’ personal and professional journeys hit close to home to the Wilson sisters. “The women mentioned in the song are our icons,” says Crystal Blackmon Wilson. “We grew up listening to Sarah Vaughan and idolized Etta James and Dionne Warwick. These women inspired us to sing in the first place.”
Crystal and Penni understand how love songs affect the way we love, live, and interact with one another. “Our favorite vocalists express the grand illusion of what love should be and what we should feel,” Penni adds.  “We hear it on the radio and strive to find it in our lives.”
Standards’ catchy hook is a list of famous divas’ names, including Etta James, Sarah Vaughn, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman, and Patti LaBelle. These women taught higher standards of romance to generations of Quiet Storm listeners.

Top 100: June 2022
Quite a few changes here. I've been listening to a lot more of Buy by James Chance and the Contortions. Specifically, the song "Bedroom Athlete" has become a recent obsession. The b-side to Alvvays's Antisocialites also broke into my top 5 this month along with Magrudergrind's self-titled album. So you can tell emotions have been pretty volatile. Another huge addition that I've come to absolutely adore is Xuvetyn by the shoegaze act Lovesliescrushing. It's a phenomenal album. No shoegaze album that I've listened to so far can match the sublime opening, "Valerian (her voice honeyed)." Just gorgeous all around. The album earns a spotlight as my highest recommendation for the past month. An album I've strongly come to associate with reading Berserk by Kentaro Miura is Éons by Neptunian Maximalism. There is a great mixture of traditional war-like instrumentation with no-wave style saxophones and distortion. It made for the perfect soundtrack to a legendary manga. Other additions include Lola's Pocket PC, Lil Noid, and Omni.
