How much merit did "Star is Chara's theme" have really ?

The music of Undertale is quite renown for a number of things, from its quality to its abundant usage of leitmotifs.

However, there are a few tracks which went under the radar, such as the ones that went unused in the final release of the game.

One of such tracks was "Star".

This particular unused track found itself in an intriguing situation when it became the center of one of Undertale's biggest fully soundtrack-based theories of the early fandom.

The theory suggested that "Star" may have been an unfinished version of what could have been a Chara theme before the idea was eventually scrapped before mounting up to anything concrete.

That theory was based around the way Toby Fox makes his music and the way it correlates to his characters.

For instance, from its rhythm to its instruments and its intensity or even its fairly epic/heroic yet pretty chaotic & impulsive nature, Spear of justice has "Undyne" written all over it it countless ways. It isn't just an Undyne-associated song, the song literally feels like Undyne. It is a musical representation of Undyne and the situation she finds herself in at the moment. And that is how a lot of Toby's music is written.

Even someone who has never heard the song and knows nothing about Undertale, if given a description of each of the main characters and asked of which one was this a theme of, would easily find the right answer.

This particularity comes from a few things, such as the fact that Toby confessed that he actually often makes the music first and then creates the scene around it by taking inspiration from the music.

And so, in the case of character themes, it means that Toby Fox songs end up being filled with hidden details and tones that are relevant to a character's personality, backstory, psyche, etc... And thus makes the songs a lot closer to the characters.

Due to this, a number of fans tried to reverse engineer some of the unused songs using this technique in order to try and figure out what they might have been for, and "Star" was the one that stood out.

The reason why it stood out was because the fans did believe they were able to find such connections between "Star" and the first fallen human.

Some of the ties they proposed between the song and the character were :

The song starts out with a sad/depressing tone similar to grief or regret, seen as possibly alluding to how Chara's plan was a failure (that Flowey came to cruelly regret), and how it caused the kingdom to fall into despair after their death.

In addition, the song has a very strong "echo" effect, which is also often associated with the idea of death as well as that of the consequences of the past coming back to you. Two things that Chara as a character is also associated with.

But it soon begins to obtain an uplifting and hopeful undertone as the song goes on. This can be attributed both to Chara being seen as the future of humans and monsters, but also to their newfound "reincarnation" allowing them a new second chance at existence.

The combinaison of the previous two things makes the song feels somewhat confused before it finds itself a stable path. Which could also be tied to Chara's words at the of genocide. (but that one is a bit more of a stretch)

The song overall just has a very similar vibe to "his theme", Chara's best friend. As Toby likes to have musical similarities between themes of characters that are closely tied together.

The song is just long enough so that it could have fit to play during the chara flashbacks scenes at the end of pacifist if we were to add back the unused few more images that were going to be in there originally. (Side note : this being the case would give point n°3 a very toby-esque double meaning too. With Chara being there both in Asriel's memory and reincarnated)

Some claim that the instruments used in the song can tie it to the Dreemurr family, however my ear is not good enough to tell wether this point is actually valid or just a rumor.

The song starts off weak in intensity, but begins to grow stronger after a click that radically changes the song's overall feeling. (the same one that was proposed to be about their reincarnation.) This was suggested to be a reference to Chara's words about power at the end of the genocide route.

That the name of the song is "Star" in the first place, as there also happens to be a star named "Chara" not all that far from our solar System. On top of that, this particular constellation is known for having a top/northern dog star, and a south/lower dog star. Our Chara star is the lower dog Star, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for being a human yet living in the underground.

...Which isn't that for bad for a track that only lasts like 30 seconds.

So due to these reasons and to the fact that the song clearly seemed unfinished, it quickly became a popular theory that the song was supposed to be related to Chara in some way, with the flashbacks at the end of pacifist being a prime suspect for its intended scrapped use.

However, some time later, this screenshot came along :

The reliability of this screenshot is to be taken with a grain of salt, as there are many rumors that this screenshot may have been fake, and i have not been able to properly identify the source of these rumors. And besides, a private e-mail isn't something that can be easily verfied the existence of.

But all that aside, the e-mail seems to say that before it was scrapped, the usage of 'Star' was actually attempted for the fight against Madjick, a regular enemy from near the end of the game.

Although technically not fully disproving it (as the fact that Toby makes the music first & it not fitting Madjick much or just overall that regular enemies don't usually have such unique themes might let one argue that it was first made for something other than Madjick, then was used for Madjick before being removed.), the way that Toby appears to talk about it seems to imply that there isn't really more to the song than that, and thus that the theory would just be wrong after all.

Since then, the theory was pretty much left as is, slowly fading away in popularity over time.

Was this theory correct ? Whilst we will probably never be sure, the answer is most likely no. I wouldn't bet on it, at least.

However, no matter wether this was all ultimately just a coincidence or not, one thing which remains true is that the music certainly does sound quite close to how one would have expected a Chara version of "his theme" from Toby to sound like.

The same cannot be said for other fanon Chara associated themes, such as "Megalo strike back". While Toby did make this song, this was not the song's intended name and it didn't have anything to do with Undertale.

I find it unfortunate that people went fishing this far on Toby's archives for a song to make fanon Chara content around when Star was right here in the Undertale game files for the taking and would have been a more fitting choice overall.

By default of being an actual Chara song, Star still had everything one would need to build good Toby-like fanon Chara songs around at the very least. But this opportunity went surprisingly under-exploited under Megalo strikes back's shadow.

It doesn't mean there aren't any Chara fanthemes using Star, though.

For instance, Undertale bits & pieces made this Genocide Chara theme using the Star leitmotif among a couple others. I believe it is an example of using Star as an inspiration done well !

I never noticed until just now, but why are there so many parallels between the skelebros' and Dreemurr siblings' rooms???

Papyrus and Asriel both have their room (or half the room) situated on the left, they both have a computer in them, and they're both vibrantly decorated to showcase their interests/accomplishments. They both have a picture on the wall near some piece of text - a picture that references their species in some way, at that.

(Asriel may not be a flower in this universe but he was a flower in Undertale so it's still relevant)

Their rooms are very tidy, and their beds both have some kind of pattern on the blankets. They've also likely been unused in quite a while, given that Asriel is at college and Papyrus rarely sleeps. You can tell a lot about them by looking at their rooms; Papyrus loves reading and action figures and racecars, while Asriel seems to love stars and flowers and is very successful in competitions.

Sans and Kris, though... their rooms are so barren. No decorations on the walls, no computer, a lamp on a dresser with nothing else on it. Their beds are more unkempt, to varying degrees. They've both got something on the floor they haven't bothered to clean up (Sans's socks, the stain on Kris's floor), and a seemingly random object that doesn't immediately seem like it would have a purpose to their characters.

In Sans's case, that object is the treadmill; he certainly doesn't seem the type to keep exercise equipment in his room. It's possible he put that there to mess with you, as Papyrus asks if Sans is pranking you when he sees you on it in the dark, but his comment on the treadmill itself is vague enough that you could argue whether or not it was always there.

Meanwhile, Kris has the birdcage on a wagon. I don't know what anyone thought its purpose was until the end of chapter 1, but I'm pretty sure no one guessed that it would be a mini soul prison of all things. (Still not sure what the point of the wagon is, though.)

That being said, both Sans and Papyrus have something similarly odd in the bottom-right corner of their rooms: the self-perpetuating trash tornado, and a box full of Papyrus's bone attacks. I don't know what it is about bottom right corners that are apparently a magnet for weird lore, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

Of course, this isn't the only instance of Kris's room that we see, because they also have two custom-made rooms in the Dark World:

The first is made by Ralsei, and it's more or less a mirror image of Asriel's side of their room. There's a few ways you could interpret this, but I think it's fair to say that it's representative of Kris looking up to their brother and wanting to be more like him. Sans may not want to emulate Papyrus, but it's obvious that he thinks the world of his brother, similar to Kris.

The second room has a piano and a giant stack of bath bombs, the latter of which Kris has a history of flushing down toilets as a prank. Sans is also a big fan of pranks, and he also owns a musical instrument (the trombone). In general, there are a decent number of small but noticeable parallels between Sans and Kris.

Likewise, it's fitting that Asriel and Papyrus have parallel rooms in this scenario, given that they were friends in Undertale - or rather, Papyrus was friends with Flowey.

I'm not sure what all these parallels mean in the long run, if anything at all, but it feels like something worth taking note of. I mean, two pairs of siblings across two games with correlating rooms and personality traits? There's potential there

Holidays, Dreemurrs, and Music: a detailed series of headcanons

inspired by undertale (the song), don't forget, and kris canonically playing piano

I. December

december holiday has been playing piano for so long that no one remembers whether it was her idea or her mother's. she's never showed as much passion for it as her mother may have liked - at any given time, she'd almost certainly rather be outside, causing havoc with her friends and her whiffle bat in some corner of town - but she stuck to it, becoming hometown's star musician. and no, she doesn't have any real competition, but she's good. just good enough.

being as dedicated to it as she is lets dess get away with other things. the biggest example was when her grades began to slip; after enough pushing and arguments, her parents resolved that, if she couldn't go to the top traditional university, she would aim to go to a well-respected conservatory instead. her grades just had to be good enough.

the holiday family could afford for their eldest daughter to not be the top student, because noelle could take on that responsibility. even if it meant she'd hardly have time for anything else. certainly not the time to learn an instrument. (this was decided for noelle by the time she finished first grade. )

dess performs on occasion. she plays at church a few times to back a solo from star choir boy asriel. other times, she plays as the background to parties at the family home. sometimes, she plays for the other kids.

the human is always the most enraptured by this, and often eyes the piano when they come over. they've asked at least once if she could teach them how to play, but she always laughs them off. why would she spend twice the time at the piano she had to, teaching some twerp the basics that now bore her to tears?

and so, kris does not end up being the first dreemurr child to learn an instrument.

II. Asriel

at the end of the last class for the year, gerson pulls asriel aside, compliments him on his singing voice, and asks if he's ever considered playing an instrument. his son alvin, gerson muses, once dreamed of being a musician, after his dreams of being an artist and a poet, before his dreams of being a preacher. so gerson got him a guitar, which alvin played for a couple of years before leaving it to collect dust.

he shows it to asriel, and asks, would you like to have this? asriel takes it.

asriel largely ends up teaching himself, though when father alvin learns of this turn of events, he does give the boy some lessons. he treats it as a casual hobby. still, the new skill helps his social status continue to climb. the other teens admire him. some of the parents (jokingly) say he's gonna be a rockstar, a big shot.

he will continue to play guitar into college. he is the guy at the party playing wonderwall.

III. Kris

as asriel begins to get the hang of his new instrument, he tries to get kris interested in it (since they've always shown a fondness for music, and asriel's current plans for the future have defaulted to being a teacher like his mother). they try it out for a little while, but their hands have trouble with the texture of the strings and the positioning for the trickier chords. their failed attempts frustrate them, to the point where, for a while, they can't stand the sound of the instrument at all. they refuse to keep practicing.

asriel brings it up to dess the next time they talk.

a few days later, dess invites kris over. she surprises them by saying she'll be giving them piano lessons. the most explanation she offers them is that, if she can teach them when asriel couldn't, she'll be able to hold it over his head for the rest of his life.

kris goes along with it. after all, no one says no to december holiday.

asriel looks surprised when kris returns and shares what they got up to. but then he sighs and says, "of course.", followed by him excitedly asking his sibling what they've already learned.

(after this lesson, he starts paying dess a small amount for each of them. the first time, she tries to make a show of turning him down that neither of them believes.)

what surprises everyone is how quickly kris learns and improves. they've soon blown past the basics onto decently complex compositions.

their style of play is different from dess. dess plays fast and hits the keys hard, especially once she's gotten into the groove of a piece. it's an outlet for her. her hands move so quickly that it seems impossible. and, in a sense, it is, as she usually makes a small handful of mistakes, but her speed gives listeners hardly any time to notice them. she plays confident, ruthless, and blunt.

kris, by comparison, is quieter and more deliberate. at the start, it takes them a while to repeat back what dess asks her to play, with pauses between each note, but once they've got it down, it's memorized for good. each key is hit with tact and purpose. they can play subtly in a way dess doesn't. and, with enough practice, they even begin to catch up to her in speed.

dess, for all her posturing and her recognition of the kid's willpower, wasn't expecting this. she doesn't take it seriously at first. she pretends to be bitter at their natural talent. then, it feels less like pretending. then, as she's scrambling to keep ahead of them, she sometimes catches herself feeling... she's not sure. not envious; she doesn't care if she's not the best piano player. she hardly even cares about piano anymore.

but she did once. and what she rediscovers, as the weeks pass, is why.

she doesn't tell her parents she's doing these lessons, but they inevitably find out in short time. fortunately, they're both supportive of it.

noelle sometimes sits nearby and does her homework while observing these lessons. she's always admired dess's piano playing, in a way that makes her disinclined to try and learn the instrument for herself. piano is dess's thing, not hers.

but there is a part of her that looks at the two of them on the bench; at a slowly emerging version of dess who's just a touch softer and seems to listen a tad closer; and wishes she could be a part of it.

one day when noelle isn't there, kris arrives early, and hears dess playing something new. it's slower and simpler than anything they've heard her play on her own.

she won't tell kris what it's called when they ask. but, at the end of that lesson or the next, she tells them it's because it's a song she's writing. she swears them to secrecy, emphasizing not to tell noelle in particular. she will share it when it's done. maybe then she'll even teach it to kris.

...

she never does.

...

kris remembers how at least that first part of the song went, from having eavesdropped on dess practicing it. they think it might have had words, but they don't remember those.

kris keeps at it. they look up tutorials and sheet music online to continue their learning. they practice at the church or the hospital instead of the holiday's. they do it for dess, and they do it for themself.

(sometimes, they swear they can hear her playing in the back of their head.)

they keep playing.

...until they can't.

IV. Noelle

the house is so much quieter without dess. without her voice. without her personality. without her music.

asriel checks in on noelle when he can (when he isn't busy worrying about kris, or how things with his parents are suddenly unraveling). he tries to talk to her, to coax her back out of her shell, but he doesn't have the words to describe how even he feels.

one time, he brings over his guitar. he plays a song or two (noelle's choice), then hands it to her and lets her fiddle around with it.

as she tentatively strums, he asks if she ever wanted to learn a musical instrument. she says nothing, but keeps strumming. he asks if she'd like him to teach her guitar.

noelle stops and looks at him. the house is quiet. silent. she nods.

the guitar lessons are held at asriel's house. noelle decides to keep it a secret from her mother, using berdly and catti as cover stories. she does so partly because she expects her mother would see it as a distraction from school (this coming not long after the spelling bee fiasco), but also because a rift has formed between her parents and asriel's since... the incident. she isn't going to risk making things any worse. after some time, she's able to say she's going to the dreemurrs, but to help kris with homework, at the point where asriel starts getting too busy and teenage-d to help kris with it as much.

considering her practice is limited to once a week visits (which eventually become once every other week, then once a month), noelle learns and progresses her skills at a good rate. it becomes a good source of stress relief for her, and even, eventually, pride.

by then, she starts wishing she had a guitar of her own. especially as asriel's graduation, and subsequent departure for college, draw closer.

she asks her mother one night. she initially frames it as if she'd only just recently become interested, but then backpedals to say she's had some lessons with asriel already on her off-time, and he's said she's got a talent for it.

she asks, and her mother says no.

noelle freezes. but then she thinks of dess, and she speaks up. she says it's unfair. music has helped her. it gives her mind something productive to focus on that isn't school. it gives her an outlet.

it lets her feel close to her sister. and if dess got to learn to play piano, why can't-

no, says mrs. holiday. dess started learning early; no amount of "raw talent" noelle might have can make up for her starting later than she, or even kris, did. and guitar, really? you can't play guitar in an orchestra. guitar is for meandering folk songs or crass rock. piano is a more respectable instrument. dess learned world-renowned classical pieces on piano. that is the kind of music holidays play.

(mrs. holiday once played piano. she doesn't have time for that anymore. hasn't since dess was born.)

does she actually say all of this? or does she just say no?

the result is the same.

noelle stops going to lessons.

asriel leaves.

but it turns out that he and rudy talked before that, about noelle. and as a result of that conversation, a week or two later, rudy surprises noelle with something:

a ukelele.

she'll have to relearn the chords, due to the lower number of strings. and the timbre is different. but it's not so different. and compared to a guitar, it's easy to hide.

by the time of the game's events, noelle has learned a few songs on the thing. at least one of which she may or may not use to serenade a certain purple girl, once she works up the courage to.

in time, she'll get the guitar she wanted. as kris will get their own piano or keyboard.

from there?

well. imagine, if you will, a band. with a human on the keys, a purple girl on the drums, and a deer girl on the guitar - an electric guitar, that is. perhaps there's also a bird boy playing premade synth loops, and a goth cat girl on the bass, or vocals, or both. maybe even a (former) prince with pink horns on backing vocals. add or subtract, mix and match, to your pleasure.

imagine too, a song completed, and finally heard by its intended audience, lyrics and all.

imagine a piano and guitar - perhaps, two pianos and two guitars - playing harmonizing melodies as the curtains close and the credits roll.

waterfall... what are you hiding. i think we know less about waterfall than we do all the other areas in undertale- or at least waterfall has the most secrets in it. think about it: what do we know about waterfall? we know it's the home of undyne and the blooks. it has a garbage dump. ...and that's it. literally, we know that:

the ruins were originally the capital of monster civilization, the former home of the dreemurr family, and initially inhabited by every single monster before the dreemurr kids died. there's a city and everything. the residents are all very kind if you give them a chance. the area music that plays there is whimsical and inviting.

snowdin is inhabited by a population of furry monsters who decided they liked the cold while the kingdom was looking for a new capital, and decided to stay there. it's the home of sans and papyrus, and guarded by a platoon of dogs whose fur protects them from the cold. it's got an inn, a shop, a restaurant, cheerful area music, really friendly atmosphere and locals, all that jazz.

hotland is the underground's technological epicenter, being the home of alphys the royal scientist and the core. it's got quite the population- it even has a university and a luxury hotel. it's mettaton's primary performance area, possibly the only place he performs live. its area theme is electric and filled with a sense of wonder and excitement for what lies ahead. the site of wd gaster's fatal accident and a busy area in general.

new home- capital of monster civilization. has a giant city that we don't end up exploring, but that's clearly populated by all different types of monsters. the home of the king, and the most crowded area in the underground.

meanwhile, waterfall... i mean. its area music isn't cheerful or whimsical or excited, it's mysterious and dramatic and suspenseful. it's the setting for the undyne fight, sure, but even before that, so much of it is weirdly dark and shrouded in apprehension and uncomfortable tension... like the monster history plaques? the "a drawing of a strange creature... there's something very unsettling about this picture" plaque??? like. did we ever figure out what the fuck that one meant? i know it was probably just of asriel or flowey or something but. i don't know! it's still a weird detail to put in!

and that's ignoring the weird horned statue sitting in the hall, waiting for someone to put an umbrella on it to protect it from the rain... the statue that looks like the titan in deltarune... the structures at its feet seem dry... obviously it's literally the only place we can ever see gaster and goner kid... and clamgirl... suzy who may or may not be susie deltarune's undertale counterpart... that odd npc that just wants to know what a star is and asks you about it in a fairly unsettling way ("can you touch it? can you eat it? can you kill it? ...are you a star?" was WEIRD)... the entrance dog room in snowdin has a very out-of-place waterfally vibe, almost as if toby's trying to tell us something about its importance to the game as a whole... the legendary artifact... not to mention it's the only area where you can see the king's castle from the outside. GOD.

BELLUM.   top 10 things that made me cry this morning

picture this scene :

it’s the weekend, and Lo has had the day off since Toriel and Asgore have been around the Dreemurr house all day, but they have to go to some big monster press conference or something overnight and it’s something they don’t wanna bring the kids to, so Lo comes to the house to be overnight babysitter

the Undertale theme plays in the background as she arrives, opening the door only to be greeted by Chara’s bright smile

you can’t hear any dialogue, but they ask her something and as soon as she steps inside she’s showing them pictures of the fun afternoon she just had with one of her new friends, she took a break from everything else and is clicking with his person and maybe is on the path to being less lonely as far as adult friends go

of course, she’s quick to assure them that she’s happy to be here with them now, because she does love her kids

Chara never acts needy, but this time is different, they get close and reach their arms up and after realizing what they want, Lo picks them up the same way she usually picks up Frisk or Asriel

she carries them over to the couch, and they grab their coffee table book about stars, and they ask if she’ll read to them

it’s a little funny, because Chara reads pretty far about their age level, but she’s glad to do it, so she cracks the book open, and lets them show her what section they want her to read.   she’s sure they’ve read the whole book a million times, but that’s okay

as she starts to read, down come the other children to congregate around her, as usual.   Asriel uses his magic to light up the fireplace before scrambling up to sit next to Chara, and Frisk cuddles up on Lo’s empty side with Flowey’s pot in their arms

Lo turns the page after a minute, and points to a certain section, and you can read her lips as she says, “look at this, there’s a star named Chara, too!”   and Chara’s face flushes more than normal and their smile gets a little shyer and they seem completely comfortable when they put their head on her shoulder

there’s a closeup of the page about this star, only a few paragraphs long, but one part stands out against everything else ; the star’s name is derived from an Ancient Greek word, χαρά (khará), which means “joy”

you can read her lips again as she breaks from the text ; “well, whoever named you chose the right word, anyway”

the music fades out, and you can hear the crackle of the flames and Asriel talking about how Chara’s the best big sibling ever and Frisk teasing that “hey, I’m your big sibling too!” and Flowey telling them all to shut up so Lo can keep reading

and Lo’s just laughing at them all as she pulls Chara into a slightly tighter hug, something to let them know that, hey, look at this, so many people care about you, and I love this family, and you can trust me to never hurt any of you

and Chara leans in closer, and even though their previous life looms over them, right now it seems like a million miles away ... because for the first time in a long time, they actually believe that there’s a human who doesn’t want to hurt them or their family

and right here in this moment, life is good for everyone, and they’re going to hold onto this moment for all they’re worth.

“Psst! Chara! You awake?” Chara kept their eyes closed and turned over in their bed, “No…” The voice grew irritated, “Liar! Come on! Get up!” Chara sighed and slowly sat up in their bed, “What is it Asriel?” they mumbled sleepily. “I want to show you something!” Chara yawned, “Azzy it’s midnight. Can’t this wait til morning?” Asriel crossed his arms, “ No it can’t! Now’s the best time to see it!” Chara really didn’t want to get out of bed, “Won’t we get in trouble if we sneak out?” Asriel gave a sly smile, “I won’t tell if you won’t!” Chara stared at the young monster, “…You’re not going to let me go back to sleep are you?” Asriel grinned, “Nope! Now come on! Let’s go!” Chara chuckled as they slowly slid out of bed, “Haha, alright alright. Lead the way.”

“Asriel we’ve come all the way to Waterfall. When are we going to reach the thing you want to show me?” Asriel was busy carefully examining his surroundings, “Don’t worry! It shouldn’t be much farther!” Chara looked around and noticed something strange, “Come to think of it I don’t even recognize this area.” Asriel looked back and smiled, “That’s because it’s a secret! I found it myself a while ago.” Chara just stared, “Come on Azzy, just tell me where we’re going already!” Asriel walked over to the wall and started searching it, “Calm down, we’re almost there. Trust me! You’re going to love it! I just need to…BINGO! Found it!” Chara stared as Asriel pulled away a large stone revealing a small tunnel, “Whoa…” Asriel grinned, “After you!”

After crawling through the tunnel the kids emerged into a gigantic cavern. There were patches of echo flowers, a massive underground lake, and hundreds of glowing crystals on the ceiling. The water reflected their lights and colors like a brilliant light show. Asriel smiled, “Do you like it? They shine the brightest at this time! This is my favorite place in the whole Underground!” Chara couldn’t take their eyes off the crystals, “It’s beautiful! They look just like the real stars!” The two kids spent a while “star”-gazing and then Asriel asked a question. “Hey Chara, what’s a star? I heard about them in stories but what are they really?” Chara thought about it for a moment. “Stars are…well they’re very special Asriel! I used to love watching them. They can mean different things for different people! For some they’re giant balls of fire in the sky, others believe they can make wishes come true, and for some folks stars are just really important people.“ Asriel stared, “Wow…so what do they mean to you?” Chara looked back up at the crystals, “Hmmm…I guess…I thought of them like friends. Knowing that they never give up trying to light up the dark, they just made me feel a little less alone.” Asriel looked over at Chara, “Then…are you a star?” Chara let out a loud laugh, “Hahaha! No, no, it doesn’t work like that!” Asriel gave them a confused look, “But ever since you fell the Underground has felt a lot brighter, everyone thinks you’re special and important, you granted my wish for a friend, and with you around I’m not lonely anymore. So are you a star?” Chara looked at the monster child stunned, “I…I never though about it like that…” They gave a small smile, “Maybe I am.” Chara chuckled as Asriel let out a yawn, “What’s the matter? Feeling tired sleepyhead?” Asriel laughed, “Heh, guess so…let’s head back home now. It’s gonna be a big day today!”

As the two made their way back to New Home Asriel noticed something. Chara had been keeping an even pace with him for a while but now their movements had slowed to a crawl and they were clutching their stomach like they were in pain. “Hey…you okay there Char’?” Chara quickly glanced up at Asriel before turning away, “…I’m fine.” Asriel wasn’t convinced. “You sure? You’re awful quiet and you’re looking a little pale.” Chara quickly snapped at him, “I said I’m fine Asriel!” they sighed, “I’m just…tired.” Asriel paused then walked back to Chara, “I was going to save this for in the morning but…” He reached into his pocket, pulled out two heart lockets, and handed one to Chara, “Now might be a better time!” Chara stared at the locket, “What’s this?” Asriel smiled, “Your birthday present!” Chara looked up at him with wide eyes. “That’s no ordinary locket. I know you don’t like to talk about the surface much. It scares you doesn’t it?” Asriel put on the second locket, “So I had these enchanted! If you ever find yourself in trouble, all you need to do is call for help and, no matter how dangerous things might be, someone will come to help you!” Chara opened the locket and a music box began to play. “Seriously? ‘Best Friends Forever?’” They smiled and hugged Asriel, “Heh…You’re such a dork! Thank you.” Asriel laughed, “Hahaha! Don’t mention it! Happy Birthday Chara Dreemurr!”

this spell was written specifically for an asriel dreemurr (undertale), but this spell can be modified to fit any kin!! remember, my spells are just an outline; for the most part, they can be edited as you see fit ^.^

gather any of the following ingredients:

caraway

rosemary

peppermint

rose petals

cinnamon (sticks)

tbh?? grass (don't knock it, for real!)

(strongly suggested) anything that you associate with asriel. some suggestions from a chara are rainbow-themed stuff, stars, anything yellow/green in color, a sweater, stuffed animals (a goat plushie would be So Cool), etc.

other items:

a small bag/jar/box/container

(optional) a sigil to put on the container! might i suggest [this one]?

(optional) a way to play His Theme and/or Memory

procedure:

(optional) play the music and center yourself.

if you have a sweater, stuffed animal, or other item that would not fit in your container, hold it close to you.

focus on each herb one by one as you put your ingredients into your container; tell yourself that you not only want to remember, you are going to remember.

draw on any strong emotions you associate with being asriel. feel nostalgia well up inside of you. tell yourself that these herbs will help you remember.

close the container; focus on the items inside, and visualize their energy filling the container (with the aid of the sigil, if applicable).

open the container, allowing the energy to flow into you, your area, and the other item that you're holding. it's charging you, charging the air, and charging your item.

once you feel enough time has passed, close the container.

flashes of memory or strong feelings should come to you, be it suddenly, in daydreams, or actual dreams. keep your container closed (it is reusable!), but remember that herbs can go bad, so don't keep it around for too long (i'd say three uses at most before it needs to be redone). and hey, remember how you also imbued energy into your kin-associated-item? that can be used in the same way as the container; draw out the memory energy whenever you'd like!
