I came across their song “Tonight” by accident, but I am glad I did. It has been on my workout playlist ever since. This week I catch up with Adelaide Band, The Gullies, and find out more about them.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves? Members etc.
The Gullies originated around 5 years ago from high school, at first just being a fun, lunchtime muck around. We started off as a three-piece consisting of Maxwell, Ethan and Flynn. Max plays his wonderful Jazz master in the band, Flynn angrily hits the drums and Ethan plays bass guitar and sings. In the final two years of schooling, Loui and Josh thankfully joined the band, bringing two more guitars into the mix; Loui playing lead or rhythm depending on the song and now sings a little and Josh plays mostly chords to thicken out the sound. The majority of us are now studying at University while balancing a work/band life.
Did the covid pandemic change your plans at all?
We were quite lucky in Adelaide with the pandemic, there weren't too many lockdown rules, we could still have small gatherings of up to maybe 10 people which let us record our second single Inside in the midst of Covid-19, which hopefully expressed the emotions everyone was feeling at the time, I'm sick of Inside!!!!!
I am a big fan of your song ‘tonight’. How did you come up with the song and what is it about?
Tonight is quite a funny one to talk about. It was released in our last year of schooling which is why it had a low budget for mixing/mastering production, but it holds up quite well I think. Loui wrote the lyrics and presented them to me in a practice, I didn't quite think about asking him what they were about which I regret. He has explained to me that they are a cliche love song, wanting to spend quality time with a significant other, but I think it's valuable to note that the lyrics caused quite the drama and conspiracy within a big community of our friends/schools all over Adelaide who thought it was about a certain girl I had been close friends with, which resulted in everyone learning the lyrics!
Are you currently recording new music?
When we play shows, we usually have around 8/9 originals and a couple of covers, we caught up maybe a month ago and recorded a song, but since then it hasn't formulated into anything and there were a couple of timing issues. We have plenty of songs and even a new 2022 song we would love to record but are quite busy at the moment. An idea we have raised is releasing an EP or small album to just get our songs out.
Have you got a studio you normally record at?
Tonight was recorded at home, using three microphones on the drums, DI for the bass, a stocking over a cheap dynamic mic for vocals, and micing up a SOVTEC guitar amp. We then sent it off to ghost note studios for a sweet mix (wasn't mastered). Inside was recorded at Maxwell's family friends' professional home studio, which certainly gave a different tone, but I still prefer Tonight's mix and sound.
What is your career highlight so far?
I'd say in terms of excitement and how many people came, our highlight was our first gig at The Gov. We had a headline at The Gov, supported by Pool Toy and Marlin Kites and sold it out with around 200 people there, the crowd was insanely interactive and I'll attach some photos to explain how awesome the gig was!
What is your favorite venue to play?
My personal favourite venue that I've played at so far would be Crown and Anchor, it has a small gig room with a small stage, encouraging a chaotic atmosphere which is great for creating active/involved audiences.
What do you think of the Adelaide music scene? What are the other Adelaide bands we should listen to?
I don't think I have experienced a broad enough range of Adelaide gigs to comment on the overall Adelaide scene, but statistically speaking, I'm not a huge fan of many Adelaide bands as I don't have many in my playlists. Some of the bands I do have in my playlists that you should listen to are Placement and Ricky Albeck.
Have you got any upcoming gigs you want to promote?
Sadly not anymore! As touched on in Insta DM's :(
What are your short and long term goals?
I'd say our long-term goals would be to release some sort of EP/Album by the end of the year. In the meantime, we need to slowly record songs and figure out the best way to do so from home. We have troubles with figuring out which order is best to record things; e.g do we record drums to a BPM first, then record guitars etc, or do we record guitars first then drums.
Finally, where can people find out more about you?
We haven't had any blogs or recorded radio segments done before, but we have our Instagram and Facebook socials which I think give a good understanding of who we are and what we are up to so I'd definitely say to check those out.
