Top 10 Moments from this Women's World Cup?
Okay so I kinda just did TOP TEN HIGHLIGHTS of the 2019 WWC... because I didn’t just want it to be goals//matches//dribbles. I wanted it to be bigger than that.
Where do I even begin? Seesh! Okay you asked to go down this rabbit hole. I apologize to no one for how long this is.
[10.] Lucy Bronze v Norway (Defender, England)
Okay... So we shouldn’t be surprised that I put Lucy Bronze on this list. But her goal vs Norway was my personal goal of the tournament. The strike, the technicality, the pace, ugh. Beautiful stuff from a beautiful human being. I mean it was a rocket. This was such a statement win, not to mention the fantastic tournament that Lucy had as well as the rest of the Lionesses. She anchored the english backline despite being a RB up in the attack. I think Lucy is the engine of the team. (Tbh, I don’t like Houghton as a captain because she doesn’t command enough of a presence for me on the field) You know who does have a presence on the field? Lucy Tough Bronze. This goal proved that statement to be true.
Tumblr media
[9.] Amel Majri (Defender, France)
Switching flanks to the LB position, let’s talk Amel. Majri had one of the strongest if not the strongest performances throughout the entire WWC. (If she gets left off of the Best XI, I will literally riot.) She was strong, creative, pushed forward and added to the attack, while still providing top-class defense. She was able to keep world class forwards and mids quiet for 90+ minutes game after game. She had insane stats for this WWC, listen to this and tell me it’s not crazy. She led the entire tournament (think about the strong teams of Germany, USA, Netherlands, etc.) leading into the Round of 16 // Q/F games in assists, chances created, crosses//successful crosses. She’s a left back. I’m sorry but I just have to point out how important she is to the French side. Her dynamic running and influence was//is crucial to their attacking play. (She did more than Gauvin and Thiney combined tbh.) But anyhoo, Amel Majri had a hell of a tournament and she is a hell of a player. That’s just the facts.
Tumblr media
[8.] LGBTQ+ Visibility
I think this entire point can be summed up in one tweet.
Tumblr media
The LGBTQ+ Community THRIVED this World Cup. And I was here for it.
[7.] France - La Marseillaise // Chile - Canción Nacional
I love nothing more than pride for our heritage and country. I promise that not all of these moments are about France either. (sorry! Mais allez les bleues am I right?) But after living in France for 19 months learning the culture, understanding the people, loving the language and the pride. I couldn’t help but put this on the list. France (the host nation) walked out onto the Parc des Prince field June 7th, it was all the pride of the host nation on display. It was incredible to experience and as you watched the players take in a sold out Parc des Prince and have 45,261 people scream-sing your nations anthem, chills. One of my personal favorite moments I got to experience throughout the games I went to. Similarity, I got chills when the Chile WNT sang their national anthem. For whatever stupid reason that FIFA was being shitty, it all got somewhat remedied when we heard La Rojas belt out Cación Nacional each and every game. Passion. Soul. Chills.
( Couldn’t find a video of these... :/ )
[6.] Oranje Legioe
Undoubtedly, the best fans throughout the entire WWC go to the Dutch. They went to Le Havre, Valenciennes, Reims, Rennes, and finally Lyon and they didn’t just go... No, they showed up with thousands upon thousands of supporters strong. You’ve got them all, old, young, kiddos, men, women, children, gay, straight, and even Lisa Evans in a dodgey Orange hat to support her gf. Even still you might be asking, “Sage, why do I love the Dutch Oranje so much?” Well dear tumblr user, because it wasn’t just about the fanbase that they brought to the France, rather it was the support they gave from home. Game after game, the Netherlands smashed viewing records by millions as the NEDWNT continued on to the final. Incredible support makes incredible football. #GrowTheGameTOGETHER
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[5.] Erin Cuthbert’s Photo Tribute (Forward, Scotland)
I made a post about this earlier in the WWC. But this moment was incredible. Erin and Co are playing Argentina in their final WWC Group Stage game. It’s simple, win and they’re in. (Ultimately they would fall short after a powerful rally from La Albiceleste that stunned the world.) Anyhoo, Erin scores her first-ever WWC goal and pulls out a small photo and kisses it. Probably the most tender goal celly of the entire tourney tbh. The image was unclear but it was soon confirmed that it was a photo of a young Erin Cuthbert. Erin later said this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[4.] Marta’s Speech (Forward, Brazil)
What a moment not only for the Brazilian fans but for fans across the globe. Marta after Brazil’s elimination to hosts France in the Round of 16, delivered a powerful speech. In it she stated, “There's not going to be a Formiga forever, there's not going to be a Marta forever, there's not going to be a Cristiane.” before inviting the youth of Brazil to give more and do more. This speech quickly, became a worldwide topic of interest. But you know who didn’t need to hear it? (Hint: Read #5 again.)

[3.] Italy Women’s National Team
Tumblr media
They first turned heads on first WWC game since 1991 against Australia. Upsetting the favorites 2-1 in an intense, exciting game. No one expected the Italians to do well versus the likes of Sam Kerr (c), De Vanna, Kellond-Knight, Foord, and Williams but, the Italians came back with a unique set of talent in Sara Gama (c), Bonansea, Giacinti, Girelli, and Galli that led their team not only to a shock upset against Aussies but to the Q/F. They played with heart, soul, and passion. They played an exciting game and displayed to the worst why they were there. (and ruined thousands of brackets in the process. RIP.) By far, one of my personal favorite teams to watch this entire tournament. Fantastic football. Let’s just put some up a beautful goal yeah?
Tumblr media
[2.] Badass Goalkeeping
This WWC had no shortage of badass women, and it didn’t have a shortage of badass goalkeepers. I’m talking about Christiane Endler, Alyssa Naeher, Shimeng Peng,  Hedvig Lindahl, Karen Bardsley, Vanina Correa, and Sari van Veenendaal among others. Each of these players came up with HUGE and critical saves and moments for their respective countries. Between the 4 Goddess (oops) Player of the Match awards went to keepers showcasing the power and punctuality of the art of goalkeeping. Sari van Veenendaal took home the coveted Golden Glove. 1/12th of awards from the tournament went to keepers and if you don’t think that is impressive just check out Tiane Endler’s  performance against the United States in the Group Stage OR just check out this GK WWC Youtube Vid I found....

[1.] USWNT
The USWNT proved to from the start that they came to play. With a whopping FIFA record setting 13-0 win versus Thailand the USA started the road to the final. But the road was not easy, they had to play Sweden, France, England and take down the Netherlands in the final. This year was filled with record breaking moments for the USWNT including adding a brand new 4th star to those jerseys. What I love about this team is not only the play (but in my opinion they did not play the most attractive football in the tournament (@Netherlands) nor did they play the most strategic (@Sweden) but they grinded out win, after win, after win all while being their dorky selves. Despite pressure to succeed from the ‘15 WWC, the nation, and backlash from the current US President... the United States proved to be made of diamonds and thrived under it all. We saw cellys, sipped some tea, and marveled at Megan. The USWNT won on every front.
Tumblr media
End Tangent: This WWC was so successful and laid a great foundation for the 2023 WWC. This WWC broke records, united nations, and created a platform to advocate for equality. The level of play was tremendous and we saw that every nation is growing the game. It was exciting to see and it makes me very, very excited for what’s to come.

Once again, ccers have labeled some of their favorite fairytale tropes as indisputable facts.
Cassie:
**************************************************************************************
Anonymous asked:  Okay I’m trying to figure out why people believe C/C is a thing. Not saying you are wrong, I just have 0 context to go on and you seem to have an interesting outlook. Would you mind telling me the background to this? Or why people believe D is in the closet? (Also I’m curious why nobody uses their names and instead letters).
Cassie: Nonnie, that’s a tall order. There’s SO much that absolutely indicates M is a beard and CC is most definitely real (not true. There is NOTHING to prove Mia is a beard or that cc is real).  Not the least of which is the absolute adoration on D’s face whenever he looks at or talk about C. (Wait, so your biggest and best evidence is that Darren looks at Chris with love and adoration? That isn’t proof of anything except for your own bias, your Harlequin Romance ideas about love and that you don’t understand what constitutes “proof”).  I’ve never once seen him look at M that way and usually when he is forced to speak about her, he does it in an almost offhand way and I don’t think it’s EVER in a complimentary way (”Ever” was her typo. This statement is not only NOT proof of a relationship but it isn’t even untrue. The cc fandom picks and chooses the evidence that confirms their bias and proves their point. Darren has looked at Mia with love and adoration and has said sweet things to her.  He also married her which trumps all of the goo-goo eyes they imagine he’s given Chris over the years). He’s said she’s a big girl when told people were bullying her, referred to her as a ball and chain (NO he referred o himself as a “ball and chain”), and frankly, he treats her badly (NOT TRUE. If it was true I don’t understand what you guys even like about him.  A man who treats his wife badly is a dick). He’s repeatedly slammed car doors in her face, walks as far ahead of her as he can, (Both of those scenarios were to avoid paparazzi photos of them together. It’s impossible for us to understand what it is like to have people taking our picture and making up stories about us so we can't compare this behavior to our lives.) got in the car for the sham mockery and left her to fend for herself in that monstrosity she called a wedding gown to try and get into the car (Yes, that is what all grooms do.  That is why the bride has attendants), and shook her hand at one of the first big events they attended after they had supposedly been dating for over a year (This is another flat out lie. As I debunked- Mia and Darren were photographed standing together before the red carpet and he introduced her as his girlfriend to another person standing near them. See what I mean they pick and choose to prove their point even if it means lying)   Contrast that with how reverently he speaks about C and how conscious he always seemed to be when they were in public together and there’s no contest (He tells the exact same story every time. Wonder why?)  The love sick puppy with his whole face lit up like a Christmas tree appears whenever C is mentioned (What are you 12? Nobody who is over the age of 12 and mentally sound believes that puppy dog eyes are proof of a relationship).  Paying attention to background moments is important (In other words slow it down, gif it, add music, repeat lies and notice the small stuff while ignoring the big stuff and maybe you can find cc in all the proof that Darren and Mia are happily married. Hear with your eyes because you will never find cc if you don’t). you will never If you need more, I suggest going through some of the bigger CC blogs and reading them.
As to why we use their initials and not their names means it doesn’t appear when their names are searched.
Anonymous asked: Okay more questions! Didn’t M and D start dating before G/lee? During their college years too right? And I assumed it was to avoid it being searched but it it for reasons? Maybe to avoid rude fans that disagree?
Cassie: Nonnie, if you believe the current version they are spinning, they met pre G/lee, as for when they started “dating,” well, it’s changed so many times I’ve lost track. I think the latest is 2011, but I’m not sure. (There are photos o them lying on next to each other one what is clearly a date with Darren’s pre-Blaine haircut so they have been dating since early- to mid-2010)  They tried to say before G/lee, but D blew that outta the water when he said he had never been committed to anything as long as he had G/lee during one of the interviews he did near when it ended (It is not rational to throw away all of the evidence that they dated before Glee- photos, comments from Darren and MIa and from friends in exchange for one offhand comment he gave to a reporter. This is a perfect example of how the fandom uses confirmation bias t  guide their beliefs)   Honestly, if anyone can keep the ever changing timeline in order, they deserve a reward. D sure as hell can’t. (Just because Darren isn’t. sharing dates with the fandom doesn’t mean he doesn’t know. This is a silly analogy Cassie if one of your students used this type of argument, I know you would shut it down)   They went to college in different parts of the country and M is older than D.
I could give two shits less about fans that disagree. I don’t use their names in case THEY (or D’s collection of dumbasses that make up his team) search things here (Wait, so you hide the names so that if Darren’s team can’t find it but Abby has said many times that Darren reads your blogs daily and his team does as well? They even change their plans based on what you say.  This is confusing Cassie). The “fans” that don’t agree see everything we post, as they incessantly stalk our blogs and respond directly to what we say. I stopped bothering to see what they were saying a LONG time ago. It’s always the same old crap. But hey, hope they enjoy spending all their time writing epic posts about my fandom that get three notes, maybe four (You should DEFINITELY read my blog, it would keep you from making a fool of yourself believing something that is so obviously untrue because you would see could read about how your “proof” is all untrue. I have debunked the majority of the cc lexicon and  provided evidence to back me up)
Hi is it okay if you could tell me when WS came into C’s life as a person who’s seen more than a friend? Like when and how long before the hand holding crap. I have no motive or am trying to start any fight, I am just really curious.
Cassie: To the best of my knowledge W first appeared with C in December 2011. (Wrong December 2012) The super awkward hand holding was June 2013, on the 12th, if memory serves. (Sure, I will beleive you) The day D was confirming M as the ball and chain. Never forget that France has super strict paparazzi laws to protect celebs. Everything released has to be with approval, unless something has changed. (We have photographic proof that Chris sat on Will’s lab at Naya’s party 12/7/12. We have a pic of Will kissing Chris at Coachella 4/13. The fact that you believe it happened on “confirmation day” is only because that is what Abby repeats but it isn’t true)
Anonymous asked: Thank you for responding to my WS question, so that means the tame bearding started when C said that stuttering thing implying there’s someone on An/dy’s show. Not surprising tbh. Kinda sad CC literally had to hide from like day 1, hope they won’t have to one day.
cassie1022 answered: Nonnie, you’re exactly correct about when it started with C. He definitely didn’t mean W when he made that comment on AC’s show. It is sad that they’ve had to hide for so long, but I’m hopeful that won’t always be the case. (The Andy Cohen interview was on April 2014. How in the hell Cassie can agree that the “bearding” was tame after that interview when we have Chris on Will’s lap 12/7/12 and a kiss in April 2013 at Coachella. Darren and Mia had been dating for at least 4 years by the time Chris did this interview It’s ridiculous that you can claim that it “definitely wasn't Will” The truth is you have no insight into who Chris was speaking of and all evidence points to Will.  Stop living in your imagination).
***************************************************************************************
Whenever i see anything m related…Anon
ajw720 Hi nonnie, I am not posting your ask because i can already see the hate coming my way, but i need to make a comment. M’s job is to beard for D, her job, for which she is compensated well. Part of that job is to hide his sexuality. And as part of it, she is supposed to enhance his public image, it is literally her job to look good on his arm and to not embarrass him. (Abby, you know that you have no proof of this and to surmise that “It is literally Mia’s job to look good on his arm and to not embarrass him” is you once again embellishing your own fabricated stories about a man and woman you know nothing about.  It’s really not healthy for you to be living this deep inside your fantasy.  You are getting too specific Your theory that Mia is simply Darren’s arm candy and nothing more proves that YOU have no idea what a feminism is).
And frankly, aside from her deluded stans, she does the complete opposite, constantly and all the time. It is not badass to vomit on stage and boast about it.  It is not woke or feminist to have offensive, derogatory, and misogynistic themes and decor at a bar she owns and that D is publicly attached to, I would imagine it is against the CA health code to have naked women gyrating on the bar where they serve drinks. (You would imagine? Come on Abby, you're a lawyer, you know you're full of shit. They weren’t naked and people step on the bar all the time. I have never seen you rage about that. You have no understanding of what “woke’ is or what feminists believe.)    It isn’t cool to wear a boob shirt to a professional event your public partner created that is marketed as family-friendly (Are you scared of boobs Abby? You have been to Elsie and it isn’t full of 2 yo’s. Darren has a potty mouth at Elise and I’ve never seen you be upset that his mouth isn’t family-friendly)   It is completely insensitive to be mad that a young man tragically died because it interfered with her interview (This is so overblown.  That wasn’t what she was doing and it’s time you stop using this to rally your troops, it’s a low blow and it isn’ true).  It is frankly criminal in my opinion to raise money from fans and then not use it for the stated cause (another untrue “fact” you keep repeating.  The money was for the project they completed).  And I could go on all day (yes becuase you’ve made most of them up yourself).  She is harmful to his image and becomes increasingly more so every day (This is untrue- she is his wife and Darren is about to have his best professional period in the next 6 months.  I have never seen one bad work about MIa that wasn’t directly tied to the cc fandom, in other words, nobody outside the fandom dislikes Mia and she isn’t negatively impacting his image.  Their wedding was extensively written about and on several best wedding lists without one bad word about Mia which also proves she isn’t hurting his image. You have also been saying this since 2015= of it got worse every day it would be 1,825x worse than when you first mentioned it)  And any team that cared about their client would have removed him from the situation years ago.  And if they needed him to be straight, get him a beard with ambition beyond being a beard.
*************************************************************************************************
Anonymous asked: What happened with Mia, why everyone hates her? I'm new at this :(
chrisdarebashfulsmiles answered: A/non this is a long story. A lot of us tried to ignore her as much as possible for years (Bwahahahah the lack of self-image is overwhelming)  You of course already know that she’s a beard ( honestly not an opinion but a fact proven by a lot of things, public and not (NOT TRUE) - let’s talk about her living with her real bf “and D” for example) (Again I have disproved this trope, They don’t even comprehend that Ben has a live-in girlfriend and has been with her for a while now) and this wouldn’t have been a problem if she wasn’t the daughter of a powerful couple (jealous much? This wouldn’t be a problem if her parents weren't rich? WTF?)) and she was kind enough to truly love other people than herself (This trope is so untrue. Mia’s friends adore her and comment on how great she is.)   Because in that case she would have been a perfect beard and a wonderful friend for D. (It’s hilarious that she believes this is a valid argument) But unfortunately for D mostly the reality is way different (and yet Darren has never made one comment that suggests Mia is a beard, he is with Chris - in fact they have both denied they were in a relationship- or that he’s unhappy. This trope is 100% cc fabricated).
I can say to you, while suggesting to keep an eye for some posts about her here, that we have public video and post reporting how much awful she could be with D and his fans (I’m curious about this-anybody know what she is talking about?)  Or we wanna talk also about her fans? With the excuse of going full bearding following D everywhere every time ( obviously she talked about grueling work and heavy travel schedule in 2015) she and his group stole the money asked with a fundraising for a new video. And don’t forget: She’s rich AF. (Again, so jealous that her parents are rich-her parent’s money is not her money. She’s an adult. She didn’t steal the money for the video-they made the video Gorilla.  I’m going to write another post about this lie)
Our despising is mostly related to the shit she does to D, tho.(Which the cc fandom has completely fabricated.  How would they have any info on what she. does to Darren? He’s never said one negative word about MIa)
leka-1998 It’s been 2 years since they forced the encagement. Almost 1 year since the sham mockery and not even 1 month since everyone and their mother included it in their 2019 recap (Leka morphing into Abby.  As for posting -that is what friends and loved ones do. However, most of the “Recaps” were Top 9′s on Instagram and people don’t choose those pics, they are literally the TOP 9 liked posts of the year). And would you look at what’s happening, there are still people coming here wondering if something’s wrong.(Not a logical conclusion, they are reading your lies and then coming for answers)
Archives here are a good place to start. Let me just say one thing. She’s mocked Cor/y’s death because an interview had to be rescheduled and she was not happy about it. She’s an all around bad person and the complete opposite of what D stands for. (And what exactly does Darren stand for? IT seems to me that he loves his wife and their life. His potty mouth and love of sex puns fit nicely with her).
Anonymous asked: Not the same anon, but for someone rich, M dresses really really badly. You would think rich people could dress themselves especially since they can actually afford a stylist lmao
chrisdarebashfulsmiles answered: I’m for the people right of choice of wear whatever they want tbh, anon (I stand for freedom of choice except if you are Mia....then I can trash everything about you).   Sometimes she is dressed by AW, sometimes by Lu/lu. The point is that most of the time she chooses the wrong dress alone because of her desire to be a ‘90 badass woman 20 years late. Something that I can understand because of my age but I also have to say that if you have to walk on a red carpet… You need to do it in the right way. She seems unable to understand this fact.(Everyone is free to be you and me except Mia who has to follow the patriarchal rules set forth by society 100 years ago: women are to be seen and not heard, should look pretty but be modest because it’s her responsibility to make sure men do not get boners when looking at her.She is supposed to wear new dresses according to Abby and they should be designer so as to look at Darren’s level. She has to look beautiful as defined by the ccers’ beauty standards or she is a labeled a bad person whom they are then free to bully).

did you guys not have like ... truancy rules/laws? cuz where I went to school, if you skipped class like 3 times you would get reprimanded /a lot of detention / suspension, and if you missed like 10 days of school without a reason / notice, a police officer would come to your house and talk to your parents
wow uhh, well, LOTS to unpack there.
First of all: WHAT THE FUCK? That’s messed up and crazy and terrifying. Second of all: No laws of this kind that I knew of? There were rules, though, but I kind of managed to bypass them? Bear with me here ‘cause I have personal, deep-rooted beef with the Educational System:
I eventually got some official letter in the mail from my high school (addressed to me, not my parents, but I still made them read it), saying I had skipped over approximately 3 months of school (when they added up all the hours of all the classes I didn’t attend to), and it said something about if I kept skipping more classes I’d have to appear in front of a special little jury/tribunal for school matters (not nearly as scary as it sounds) to explain/plead my case so I wouldn’t get expelled. I don’t know if I remember that correctly or if the rules changed since then. I never appeared in front of that jury though. One, because I am extremely lucky to have the parents that I have, and we always had good communication. They understood my point of view/how some aspect of school was super bad for my mental and physical health (being OBLIGATED to be somewhere at a certain time doing a certain thing and being dictated where I should go and how to spend my time by random adults that I didn’t know? and getting punished for not obeying blindly? sacrificing sleep to be able to get homework done in the evening and be “on time” in the morning every day? hell no what the fuck. Being forced blindly into doing anything was and still is crazy and a big no-no to me), and compromised with me so I’d still go to some classes and finish high school (I nearly didn’t). They also talked to some teachers so they’d let met AT LEAST draw/rest instead of taking notes (‘cause when I WAS in class, i’d not take notes, and you could be reprimanded for that. Taking notes never worked for me and I’d retain information better while resting/just listening while doodling). And TWO, because (in France at least, and in my high school at the time), once you’re 18, you can write your own “absence notes” with the reason why you didn’t attend a class, and sign it yourself. Before you’re 18, your parents have to do it or call the school ahead of time to give an explanation. So during my “senior year”, when I was 18, I’d write my own notes, just stating the truth (aka: “I didn’t go because I didn’t want to”, “I didn’t go because I was tired”, “I didn’t go because I was playing music/drawing/reading/on a walk”, etc), and I was within my rights.
I never got detention for skipping classes, or suspended for it either. And reprimanded?? What does that even mean?? Like, yelled at? I got called into the Principal’s office a few times to explain myself and I’d just tell the truth again (”I just don’t wanna be here”, “this class doesn’t interests me”, “I wanted to read my book”, “I wanted to take a nap”. I will add that I was never vulgar or rude to anyone. I was NOT a “disruptive student” either, and had good grades when I wanted to. I always LOVED learning new things, I just always wanted it to be on my terms and never liked to be forced into anything.) They couldn’t do anything to force me to go to class (couldn’t make me go physically, suspending me would’ve been giving me what I wanted, giving me a “bad grade” held exactly 0 importance to me, etc the only thing they did and that affected me was banning me from field trips to other countries), so these visits were useless and only designed to intimidate me into “complying”. All they did was treat me like I was unstable and crazy, lots of fun little gas-lighting and emotional blackmail basically (mostly threatening to involve my friends, or talking about my parents and how “disappointed” they’d be etc), but that’s a whole other thing. So, yeah, I just have a very, very bad history with high school/the education system/school authority figures that I’m not even gonna TRY to unpack or explain here. I had traumatic/very bad experiences with literally everything and everyone there, which only ever convinced me to stay as far away from classes/teachers I didn’t like, and messed me up more than anything. Very rough teenage years.but anyway, GETTING THE POLICE INVOLVED??? lmao not only would I have started a riot, but my parents would have flipped on the poor cop AND on the school for sending AN OFFICER OF THE LAW, WHO CARRIES WEAPONS, TO THEIR DOORSTEP, BECAUSE THEIR KID DIDN’T “COMPLY” AND DID SOMETHING AS HARMLESS AS NAPPING OR READING INSTEAD OF GOING TO CLASS. If I didn’t notify the school/gave any reasons for my absence, they’d just call my house themselves and that’s all. I don’t know how it all works in other countries or in different schools but wow. Police has literally nothing to do INSIDE or IN RELATION to schools. That’s just crazy to me. I still remember the parents of my high school flooding the Principal with furious emails when he allowed one (1) police officer on the premises for “safety” once because some stuff had happened in the city. Police near kids/schools is a big fat fucking no-no here. At least it was in my particular high school and at the time I was there.
edit: So, basically, I guess me being considered an adult at the time (18 y/o, in France), is probably how I managed to not get into extremely serious trouble just for skipping classes.

In the days leading up to the world cup I had what you might call a nineties renaissance. I read All Played Out by Pete Davies, watched One Night in Turin, changed my tumblr url to garylineker, sang World In Motion too many times to count. Tried to get my hands on an Italia ‘90 kit, although that was slightly too expensive.
I wasn’t born, in 1990. Forget understanding football or thinking about identity, I didn’t even exist. And in the twenty-eight years since then my parents got married, I’ve been born, gone to uni, graduated, gotten a job – and England still hadn’t ever gotten close to a world cup semi-final again.
It’s showed, over the years; shit tabloids writing shit takes, fans lashing out, the manager’s job becoming untenable, the players so abused it wasn’t even a moment of pride anymore. People forget that Gareth Southgate wasn’t supposed to be here; Big Sam Allardyce getting sacked led to even more grumbling. There was the group stages of 2014, and Iceland. When Harry Kane was appointed captain I thought oh, dear. Is there nobody else left? No one thought anything of us, not even ourselves.
There is vitriol in supporting England. There is banter and there is pure hatred. Even before this game I saw a billion 'anyone but England’ posts, rooting against us just because, drudging up the colonial past (strangely enough, the meeting of ex-colonial powers France and Belgium was perfectly all right, and I’m sure that if we had made the final, people would still have been rooting for France regardless). People even hate 'it’s coming home’ purely because we have a belter of a song. Like we aren’t allowed to sing to celebrate when every other country is.
So, going into this tournament: young squad, inexperienced manager, some very big teams with very big guns. The usual Ronaldo and Messi hype. I remember the end of the England managers documentary, Henry Winter looking at the camera and saying: if Southgate slips up against Panama –
No one thought we were going to be here four weeks later. No one.
Okay, it’s been a crazy world cup. Big guns falling left and right. And okay, we got the 'easier’ side of the bracket, although how you can call teams that beat Argentina or Mexico 3-0 'easy’ I don’t get. But that doesn’t negate the fact that we came into this, all of us, expecting to lose early. And we didn’t. We outlasted Germany, Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil. We won a penalty shootout for the first time since – I couldn’t even tell you when, and it’s certainly the first time at a world cup. We scored a last-minute goal in our first game. John Stones scored two goals. John Stones!
Every step forward was another fever dream. Every song in the street, it was nearly complete, it was nearly so sweet. (Yes. I did that.) It’s Coming Home was only ever a joke, mind – it’s impossible to explain British humour – but through all the memes we knew what it really meant: the hope and the buoyancy and the people dancing on the streets. Cars honking England chants, people ditching Wimbledon and Justin Timberlake concerts to catch the games, concert organisers panicking because BST was on the same time as the final. The lift football provided even as the country continues to fall apart. The five minutes after Trippier’s goal where everything seemed almost unreal.
We didn’t ever really expect 'it’ to come home – Three Lions is a football song from 1996 and it was written because football was, quite literally, being played in the country where the rules were codified. The phrase referred to a geographical happenstance, not an arrogant declaration, as it seems to have been misread by so many jeerers and naysayers. And even then it doesn’t matter what it means. It was being able to say it four weeks into the world cup that counted.
And that mood? Four weeks into the world cup? When customarily dirges have already been playing for days and newspapers have been crowning the latest scapegoat (Sterling, I’m sure, this round)? When the St George’s bunting in the supermarkets would have been taken down by now and no one would be talking about football till the league started again?
Instead: still buzzing, still wearing England kits, still painting red and white on your face, still singing, still hoping. Still dreaming. I came to an epiphany recently: the 'no more need for dreaming’ from Three Lions '98 isn’t saying that we don’t need to dream any longer because there’s no point; it’s that we don’t need to dream because we’re so close.
We were so close. We came from nothing we were so close. Everyone thought we were a joke we were so close.
This experience has been one of the best experiences of my life. I never thought we’d be here, still, but this team gave everything – goals, incredible saves, savage blocks, waistcoats – everything and more. This team played like they wanted to win. And when it mattered this nation got behind them, in a way it hasn’t been for a long time. My friend told me a story of seeing an old lady on the tube listening to Three Lions on her phone.
That, to me, is the most important thing. Of course it’d have been better if we’d won. Of course. But when are you going to see something like this again? Arsenal fans declared their love for Spurs players; Spurs fans for Liverpool players; Liverpool fans for United players? People actually thinking all right, now, we’ve a shot, people actually getting excited about international football instead of moaning about friendlies and breaks, players wanting to play for their country instead of trying to squirm out, a manager believing in his lads and making sure they believed in him?
We’ve got one more game to play. I’m sure that the lads are going to go for it like champs. When they come home they’re going to be treated like champs. No one is going to forget the summer of '18 (unless, of course, 2022 happens!); no one is going to forget the wild, mad, defiant, euphoric, roaring journey. No one is going to forget that feeling immediately after Trippier’s free kick.
In 1990, twenty-eight years ago, Pete Davies wrote:
Life, like football, is a game of ninety minutes. You get your span allotted, you do your best – and at the end, you’re all played out.
And though that end be cruel as hell, there’s no one can fault you for trying all you can until it comes.
Well, we’re all played out, but no one can fault this team for trying all they could until it came.  I am only proud and happy that we were here, once, now.
And for all you jeerers and naysayers and critics and skeptics and scoffers and mockers, lean in close and listen hard, because I’ve got one more thing to tell you:
It’s coming home.

History Will Be Kind to Me?

History Will Be Kind to Me?
Jennie Klein
The title of this symposium, which took place at the Knut Knauss Auditorium on Wednesday, September 12, was paraphrased from Winston Churchill, who wrote that “history will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.” Writing is one thing, whereas performance is another. What does it mean to “perform” history? How is that even possible, when history is in the past and performance, as we are constantly reminded, exists only in the present? Churchill’s confidence that he would write history points to the fact that “history” is never actually in the past. Rather, it is what we in the present interpret as the past. To perform history is to engage with the sedimentation of ideological beliefs and world views that has comprised history up until very recently. History has always been written from the present of the winners. Churchill was a winner, prime minister of England, part of the Allied Powers in WWII that included the United States, England, France, the Soviet Union, and China. He was also the head of the British Empire (which formally dissolved in 1997 when Hong Kong was returned to China), just as the Allied Powers were also empires and colonialists. So what might history be if enacted from the perspective of those who didn’t “win”?
This was the question posed by the symposium, the title of which ends in a question rather than a more definitive period. History Will Be Kind To Me? is part of a series of symposia and workshops entitled Art in the Age of Global Challenges. Thus Annete Johannesson, president of Performance Art Bergen, opened the symposium by posing two questions: How is knowledge embodied and performed? Can artistic processes challenge the dominating narrative?
Anthea Moys from South Africa spoke about her work, which has a lot to do with both play and failure. Moys spoke mostly about a performance that she repeated twice, with two different cities. After being awarded a grant to perform in The City of Grahamstown festival in 2013, Moys decided to take on the city, finding 6 teams that she would compete against, including a battle reenactment team, ball room dancing, singing, soccer and karate--she did pretty badly at all of them, even though the spectators at the soccer match swarmed onto the field (score 12-0). Moys repeated the performance in Geneva, Switzerland for which she added cycling, horn blowing, and hockey. Moys never had a team, so she always failed. Why is failure important? According to Moys, embracing failure allows us to learn something about ourselves while also breaking the ideology of winning at all costs. Through her performances she, her audiences, and the teams against which she played all learned something about themselves.
Sareena Sattapon, who is part of the PAB/Thai exchange It’s Personal, has been doing work on gendered behavior by examining the Putai Culture in the north east of Thailand. Sattapon was awarded a grant to do a residency in Tokyo, and she decided to do an exhibition and performance “Where are My Japanese Husbands?” Sattapon used to have a dream that she had a Japanese husband. While in Tokyo, she went to parties and was introduced to friends of friends. She interviewed these men, asking them what constituted a good woman for them, after which she would take their picture. For her performance she wore large sized bras on her head and shoulders in honor of one man who told her quite seriously that he wanted a woman with “big boobs.”
Frans Jacobi, who participated in an exchange between Danish and Senegalese artists, began his talk with a disturbing story about arriving in Jawal, a small city south of Dakar. When he walked out of his hotel, he had not gone 150 meters before he was approached and offered sex. As he walked down the street, this offer was literally repeated again and again. Horrified that he was cast in the position of a white, middle aged male sex tourist, he devised a performance about it, which he did in the home of his collaborator Toubab Aobab (?--is this right?). Aobab became very uncomfortable while translating from English to French due to the use of an obscenity.
Serge Olivier Fokoua spoke about both the Ravy Biennale and his own work. The Ravy Biennale is unique in that it is a festival that brings together artists from Camaroon. The Biennale includes all media, but is about 70% performance. The festival is unique in that it brings artists who are working in Africa rather than African diasporic artists. Fokoua also spoke about his own work, which is concerned with food scarcity. A former chef, Fokoua uses pots for his installations and performances. When food is not readily available, people think a lot about what they will eat. Fokoua replaces heads with pots, making anthropomorphic groupings of pot-headed figures or having his performers literally wear a pot on their head. For his performance “What’s for Dinner?” Fokoua has two performers with pots in place of their heads attempting to stroll through a city center with the aid of canes that are normally used by those who are visually impaired. This site specific performance, which has taken place in a number of city centers in economically developed countries where food scarcity is not an issue, is designed to bring people’s attention to the conditions that many people living in the global south face on a daily basis. How can you think of anything else when your belly is empty? At the same time, the pot symbolizes hospitality, and suggests that the crisis in food scarcity is everyone’s problem.
Jittima Pholsawek spoke about Community Art Project in Thailand which she founded 15 years ago. The Community Art Project brings together artists from southeast Asia and China to work with precarious communities that are threatened by megadevelopment. Her first project was to address the community of fishermen who lived on the Salween River that lies on the border between Thailand and Myanmar. The Community Art Project brought together artists from both countries to protest the building of a dam that would change the ecosystem of the river and destroy the economy of the self sustaining communities that lived there. The Mekong Project has again brought together artists and activists to protect indigenous peoples, the ecosystem of the River, and grassroot economic systems that would be eradicated with mega development. Pholsawek has collaborated with Paisan Plienbanchang in the past.
I gave the final talk, which was about the relationship between performance festivals, global capitalism, and neo-colonialism. The text for my talk is in a separate post.  I argued that although performance festivals seem to replicate the big money biennales in the art world, they are in fact very different, based on community, a DIY aesthetic, and a leftist political stance. The artists who spoke at History Will Be Kind To Me? exemplify these values in their work, whether it be as artists, curators, organizers or facilitators--all of them wear many hats. This symposium is the first of a series of events that will address the Global Contemporary.

Peru to the World Cup: How the journey shaped Yoshi Yotun | MLS Flight Path
August 30, 20181:13PM EDT
Like many young, aspiring soccer players in Peru, Yoshi Yotun wondered as a child how far the beautiful game might take him.
It’s taken Yotun quite, quite far. He’s traveled to Europe as a child learning the game, solidified himself in Peru as a young professional player, ventured to one of Brazil’s legendary club teams, and then got a taste of Champions League playing for a legendary Swedish team, before landing in Florida to play with MLS’s Orlando City SC.
And thanks to his involvement with Peru’s national team, he’s gone even farther: In 2017, though a wild CONMEBOL qualifying campaign throughout South America where his team won the coveted-but-dreaded intercontinental playoff spot, and then, in a winner-goes-to-the-World Cup, loser-goes-home contest which took him to New Zealand and back for the right to play in Russia against the world’s best.
Yoshi Yotun’s MLS Flight Path
Peru
Yotun, now 29, began his soccer journey began at Academia Cantalao, a top Peruvian youth academy in his hometown of Callao (within the Lima metropolitan area, housing both Peru’s primary international airport and its principal seaport). “I went to a tryout when I was eight years old, and I thank God I was actually able to make it,” he recalled. He notes that the academy develops a number of notable Peruvian players, and sends players throughout South America and even Europe to compete against some of the world’s best young players.
At 11, Yotun got to travel to and play in the Gothia Cup, a massive international youth tournament launched in 1975 and now involving teams from 80 nations. He remembers it as “a beautiful experience that helped shape me, and played a key role in my development. It helped me become the player I am today.” The pace of three games a day is beyond what he’d previously been used to, and host city Gothenburg, Sweden was many miles away from Lima, but he embraced all it had to offer – not knowing then that Sweden would figure pivotally into his soccer future.
Yotun playing for Sporting Cristal
Yotun notes that landing with Lima-based Sporting Cristal, where he began his pro career as a 17-year-old, was “the best thing that could have happened to me at that point in my career.”
“They’re one of the best clubs in Peru,” he notes. “They’re a winning and ambitious club. Winning two league titles with them is still one of the best moments of my career.” Their participation in international tournaments – and the chance for him to showcase his talent outside of Peru – was key in his decision to stay with them and develop.
Brazil
He did get the chance to play outside of Peru while still attached to Sporting Cristal, via a 2013 loan to Vasco de Gama, a Rio de Janeiro-based team in Brazil’s top-flight league.
“It was my first experience playing outside of Peru,” Yotun recalls, “in one of the best, if not the best, places for soccer in South America. I played many games for them as fullback, and feel like I grew and matured a lot. It taught me how to play in a league with a lot of high-quality players. I respect their level of play a lot.”

Sweden
By 2015, the then-25-year-old Yotun was ready for new challenges, and dreamt of going to Europe. An opportunity presented itself at Malmo FF, Sweden’s most successful club team, and Yotun got to contribute to their success, helping the squad win two league titles in this two and a half seasons there.
“One of my dreams was to play in Champions League, and Malmo allowed me to do that,” Yotun recalls. He relished playing against top European teams, and in his time at Malmo, is proud to have earned the trust of his coaches. He expanded his role from left back, where he’d previously excelled, to midfield, where he got to make more decisions and have what he feels is a greater role in a team’s success.
Yotun playing for Malmo
“That change actually started with the national team,” Yotun notes. “That’s where I was first introduced to it.” Malmo is where he began to grow into the new position on the club level. “I like to keep the ball, I like to distribute it, and I like to manage the game, and so I really like playing it.”
Yotun admits that Europe, and especially Sweden, is far from family and familiar foods and surroundings. He described it as “beautiful but cold,” and found it difficult in parts because he was away from his parents, but having his wife and daughter come to Sweden with him was crucial. As he puts it, “It gave me the strength to perform and to do what I love.”
Orlando
Yotun joined Orlando City SC on August 4, 2017
Yotun would make his way to the United States – closer to home, and into a changing and evolving MLS – signing with Orlando City SC in August 2017. He recalls the club first expressed interest in December 2016, and notes that even though the negotiations were lengthy, he left in the midst of what was shaping up to be another solid Malmo season to take a chance on a league he’d never played in before.
“We were able to make it happen, and I think it’s the best decision I ever made,” he says.. “I like the team and the staff here; they’ve made it feel like home. My family loves living in this city, and if they’re happy, I’m happy, and I’m able to focus on the field. For me, it’s been very gratifying. I’m grateful for how the city has received me.”
When he was contemplating the decision, he reached out to a friend from his hometown – fellow Peruvian international player Alexander Callens, who joined NYCFC in January 2017. “He told me it was a strong league, and that it was growing a lot.” Yotun recalls. “When I got here, I was able to confirm that for myself,” remarking on both the competitive balance and how committed he is through helping the league grow.
Russia
Yotun did his part to foster that growth this summer, being one of 19 MLS players to compete in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Though teammate Raul Ruidiaz did sign with Seattle Sounders FC just weeks after the World Cup ended, Yotun was, at the time of the tournament, the only Peru national player on an MLS roster.
Peru was one of the feel-good stories of the World Cup, qualifying for just their first World Cup since 1982. Though they were ousted in the group stages, in a group that included the eventual champions from France, they played exciting, inspired soccer which found them admirers across the globe.
“To represent your country at the World Cup is the best thing that can happen to a soccer player,” he declares. “I’ve gotten to play very many important tournaments for Peru; playing the World Cup changed our careers. We want to work hard now to make sure we get there again and allow our country to enjoy it.”
Yotun featured in all three of Peru’s World Cup group matches
Heading into the last qualifying match, Peru needed to secure a draw against Colombia to finish at least fifth in the CONMEBOL table; Yotun had been subbed off by the time the late equalizer came in the form of an own goal, yet still got to be a contributing part of one of the greatest moments in Peru soccer history.
“We as a team were always focused, with a positive attitude, to make sure we could give this joy to our country,” he recalls. “To qualify was an incredible experience.”
The November 2017 intercontinental playoff against Oceania champion New Zealand ended up being for the last spot in the World Cup — and also, in a sense, the first two matches in a World Cup that was still officially seven months away. While some thought New Zealand would be an easy opponent for Peru to dispatch, Yotun and his teammates knew better.
“We knew it was going to be difficult,” he remembers. “New Zealand is a country that has grown a lot in their soccer. It was very difficult to play there, across the world, with the time change, there were many factors that played against us.”
In the Wellignton-hosted opening leg, the teams dueled to a scoreless draw; as Yotun notes, “They could have won that match, they had many opportunities, we didn’t really play that well, but they weren’t able to score.” Four days later, the Peru team returned to Lima for the second match. As he recalls, “It was a national holiday, basically. Everybody was paying attention to this match, and we dominated it. We controlled the game and earned our path to the World Cup.” The 2-0 win delivered them into the tournament, and less than a month later, learned they’d be in a group with Australia, Denmark, and France.
On playing the team that would win the World Cup, Yotun says, “It was a special opportunity for us to play against some very talented players, and I congratulate them for what they’ve achieved.”
For Yotun, there was perhaps a touch of redemption in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. During the qualifying process for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, in a match against Uruguay, Yotun was given a red card for an incident involving Luis Suarez.
Toward halftime of that match, Suarez went down when a Peruvian player nudged him in the back, and as Suarez rolled on the ground, Yotun approached him, rolled the ball at him, and attempted to pull him up by the arm. The referee ejected Yotun — a move that Peru coach Sergio Markarian felt was unwarranted — but Suarez did score the game-winner against a shorthanded Peru side. Though it was one of a number of factors in Peru failing to qualify in 2014, as they finished 7th in the table, some Peru fans saw Yotun at fault.
“It was a tough moment because of everything happening around the national team,” he reflects, “But you learn from your mistakes. Obviously, that’s not going to happen again.”
And, now that Yotun and his fellow Peruvians know the joy of making the World Cup, they’ll be striving to repeat in 2022. And though Peru’s in a particularly challenging federation, Yotun brings them — quite literally — a world of experience, growing stronger with each MLS match he plays.

So last winter me, my sister, and my best friend, Melissa, all decided to drive to Orlando Florida. My sister is in high school, so the week after Christmas is the only time for us to go, unless we wanted to wait until the following summer. Anyways we decided we were going to take off Christmas night. Now, there were two reasons for this, one, because of the fact that we would beat out all of the traffic, and secondly, so we could be in Florida as soon as possible.
Now, for those of you who don’t know, I live in New Jersey, which is about 15 hours away from Florida if you’re driving. We took off around 6:30 PM and drove straight through. I started off driving the first 8 hours. At this point it was around 2:30 AM, and I was exhausted and Melissa took over while I slept for 4 hours. At around 6:30 I took over again, because Melissa had been up the entire night! It took us another 3 hours for us to get there.
We were staying at a close family friend’s house for the week, so we literally got to her house, said ‘hi’ to everyone, and knocked out for about 5 hours. That night we went to the liquor store, and on the way back to the car, I had broken my phone! Less than 24 hours, and I had broken my phone.
That night, Melissa went with me to the Mall to talk to someone in Apple to see if they could fix my phone. Since it was the day after Christmas the store was filled, and they told me that I would have to come the next morning. When me and Melissa had gotten back to my family friend’s house, we opened up a bottle of wine, turned up the music and had an amazing time. By the end of the night we had finished 2 bottles of wine between ourselves and have been feeling pretty good.
The following morning, Melissa ended up hung over, so my sister, being the great person she was went with me to the Apple store to get my phone fixed. I ended up having to replace my phone, but at the point in time it didn’t matter to me, I was just genuinely so happy to have my phone back (yeah, I know it was less than 24 hours, but it was torture not having it). We spent some time at the mall, went to Starbucks, and went back to my friend’s house.
We got there only to find out that Melissa was still in bed. She was literally in bed until 5:30 that night. After she was finally ready, we went to Downtown Disney, which is now known as Disney Springs. We went to eat at the House of Blues, which had amazing Cajun food. Then we went to the Disney store, and bought so many things, including my Minnie mouse ears.
That night we got back to my friend’s house and had another night of drinking and gossiping. The following morning me and Melissa bought our tickets to go to Magic Kingdom. We had some breakfast, did our hair and makeup and ended up going around 12:00 PM. After waiting in the parking line for about half and hour, they tell us that Magic Kingdom was full, and that we would have to spend the day in either Epcot or Animal Kingdom. They gave us a parking and lunch voucher and so we left. After some deliberation, we both decided to go to Epcot.
When we were finally on line to get into Epcot one of the workers actually told us that we would be able to go to Magic Kingdom later in the day if you take the train. We were literally so happy, we were getting two parks for the price of one, plus we didn’t have to pay for parking, plus they were paying for our lunch.
Now for those of you who have been to Epcot, you know the park layout goes full circle, and you can either go through the park left to right or vise versa. Epcot is a theme park that represents multiple countries. We decided to start on the left. The left starts with Norway, where they have some Nordic themed buildings, and they were building some Frozen building/ride. Then there was China, where they had a dragon dance.
Germany was amazing, The stores they had, the food, the buildings, the outfits, everything. I was in love with the attention they put to detail. Of course they put a lot of emphasis on beer, coo-coo clocks, pretzels, and sausages. After Germany, was Italy. Italy was probably one of my favorites. The buildings looked beautiful, they sold lots of wine.
We then went to Japan, which took forever to get through, cause we would literally stop to touch and look at everything. We probably would of bought everything if we had the money to do so. Everything was so amazing. Next to Japan was Morocco. This was probably tied with Italy as my favorite. Then we went to France, where we had some of the most amazing Ice cream. The Last two countries were United Kingdom and Canada. United Kingdom, had really cute shops, and a mini tribute to Dr. Who and The Beatles. We mainly skipped over Canada, so I really can’t tell you much.
Finally, we decided to leave and head over to Magic Kingdom. Now Magic Kingdom is always amazing, but Magic Kingdom during Christmas season was truly magical. While we were there we went on the new rides that were added, such as the Little Mermaid ride, but we also spend time on some of our old favorite rides, such as It’s a Small World and the Pirates of the Caribbean. We also saw the Christmas themed fireworks and the Electric Parade. Overall such an amazing day!
