looking back at the year ~ September 2023

•impromptu signed up for 3 races, 4 this year

•first place female at the Knobstone Knockout (18 mile distance)

•had fun with friends at the Persimmon 5k and Portland Almost 5k 🧡

•spent a good chunk of time foraging for pawpaws and persimmons on runs and rides

•made a camping + hiking trip out of getting a new bike, biked more to yoga 🙂

Up in the stand again. I snapped my shifter cable on my way to the grocery store, and wouldn't you know it, Sturmey Archer uses a proprietary type of cable for their old trigger-shifters.

Which meant I went to four bike shops before I found one that had S-A cables in stock, and had to leave my bike for a few days to get the job done. So nice to have it back now and not jammed in 3rd gear.

I really don't know much about bikes. For many years I rode a heavy, too small for my height, Schwinn from Walmart. When it needed replacing, I splurged on a lighter, larger framed bike that didn't put my knees in my nose when I pedaled. I got a 'mans' frame, and I kinda regret not getting one I could step through. I don't recall now why I did that.

I also had them replace the tiny, standard seat it had with a wider, more cushioned one, and I don't regret that! I sometimes wish it was even wider, but it's not terrible.

This one has more narrow tires, which I thought would be easier to propel, but I've not noticed much difference in that, TBH.

It has more gears than I need, I mostly stay in the same 1 or 2 gears all the time, going up a hill I might find a 3rd one, but I really don't know what to do with 12 gears (or however many it has, I don't even know).

The first bike shop I went to was very... helpful? I mean, they wanted to fit me to a bike and have me test ride it on the trail that was nearby, and all this, which maybe I should have done, but it made me uncomfortable, so I went to another less helpful shop and basically looked at all the ones they had in the frame size I wanted and bought the mid range priced one. 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, I put a lot of miles on that "cheap" Schwinn, if I wasn't so tall or if I could have gotten it in a larger frame, I probably would have just stuck with that.

Here's the bike I have now....

Not sure if that helps. My only real advice is to start slowly, let your body (butt!) get used to the new activity by degrees. I had worked up to doing about 10 miles before, but I'm starting over now and just going short distances to begin.

Maybe other plus sized bike riders can chime in with advice?
