Rogues Lore

First of all I want to thank @schweeeppess for letting me spam her with Rogues lore 2 months ago cuz it made this post so much easier to type out when I can just copy-paste everything and then edit it to be more cohesive lmao

Second this is under a read more because it is A Lot

Leonard Snart AKA Captain Cold

He grew up with a super abusive father and his only refuge was when he would hang out with his grandfather in his grandfather's ice truck. When the grandfather died, he grew tired of his dad's abuse and set out to start a criminal career and moved to central. 

(He's the one who started the rogues!) 

He found blueprints for a "cold gun" which he ended up making from scratch (it’s also canon that he knows the gun so well he can remake it out of scraps in about 30 seconds to a minute) and had three main rules in his group: No Killing, No Harm To Women Or Children and No Drug Use. His cold gun is capable of interfering with the speedforce cuz it can reach “absolute zero” which is even colder then Mr Freeze's tech. 

He's also the only cold-based villain capable of mastering this temp. In New Earth he was described as an "adversary" but in Prime Earth (same backstory as before mind you) he's described as being a straight villain whose only rule in the group is "no killing" (which seems to be a pretty flexible rule these days cuz DC has made him more, well, down with killing). He's also much younger here then he was in NE. 

In Flash 2016 #17 we see another upgraded version of his gun that's capable of separating the Flash from the speedforce directly and, in doing so, causing Barry excrutiating pain. Generally, he and Barry had more respect for eachother in NE, to the point that Len even considered him family. In PE, though they have teamed up now and again, Len is far more hostile towards Barry, sometimes even being written in a way that suggests he wouldn’t mind if Barry died.

Sam scudder AKA Mirror Master (the first one!) 

He was a simple convict who just really wanted to learn how to get inside a mirror's reflection. He practiced in a hall of mirrors and, once he succeeded, became Mirror Master. He was a frequent foe for Barry and, during Crisis on Infinite Earths, died around the same time Barry did.

 He was the one who discovered the "mirror world". At one point he got himself trapped there and hated that the mirror world could just get him whatever he wanted instead of him stealing it so he got Barry to bust him out. He could also use mirror's to mind control ppl (dont ask) and this intrigued Barry. 

 On PE he's dating Lisa Snart (Len's younger sister) and is the only Mirror Master to exist. In N52 he, Len, Lisa, Mick and Marco all got fused with their weapons for a while and given meta-human abilities which I. hate because it took away what made them all so cool (I'm fine with Marco tho and you'll find out why in a minute) he's also a really big attention seeker lol

Hartley Rathaway AKA Pied Piper

Alright most of Hartley's info is from NE so: he was born deaf to wealthy parents who got him very high-tech hearing implants. He became obssessed with sounds and started experimenting with sonic technology. Bored of his rich life (and sometimes it's implied he had ableist and/or homophobic parents too) he took to a life of crime after learning how to hypnotize people through music (Pied Piper ayyy). 

He was the first person to ever successfully break out of Iron Heights and did so because he befriended the rats there and used them to help himself escape, adding more to his whole Pied Piper thing. After Barry died he gave up crime and started working to help the poor and underprivelaged (I'm not saying he quit specifically bc of Barry's death buuuuuut most of the Rogues did so). 

He struck up a close friendship with Wally and came out as openly gay! On PE all that we know for certain is that he's a "reformed vigilante" who's the conductor for the Central City orchestra. He used to share an apartment with Barry (yes for real) before he moved in with his bf, David Singh (also Barry's director in the CCPD). Lisa was the one who convinced him to come out to the Rogues, and they were all chill with being gay, their problem came when he started dating David who is, you know, a cop.

He has a pet rat called Moon (cute, right?). Also in pre-N52 canon (cant remember if it was NE specifically or older) Hartley once had a nervous breakdown after Barry arrested him so Barry took him to get help at a mental health hospital :')

(Some artists draw him blonde, some brunette and others go more for reddish-brown it’s kinda confusing)

Marco/Mark Mardon AKA Weather Wizard

On NE he's a two bit criminal called Mark Mardon (he's also white and yes thats important to note) but one day, after escaping from a cop van, he ran to find his brother, Clyde, who was a scientist only to discover his bro had died of a heart attack (however, there's implications that he actually murdered his brother and simply blocked out the memory). 

He then found Clyde's notes on how to create a wand to control the weather and made it for himself. The worst he ever did on NE was imprison a town in winter and after Barry's death he went into semi-retirement (told you the Rogues all did this)

On PE however! He and Clyde are Latino and are the heirs to a huge cartel! Clyde takes over the cartel and Marco wants nothing to do with that life. After their father dies, Marco runs away and eventually becomes Weather Wizard. 

He comes back when he hears his brother has been murdered and gets accused of the crime. He finds out it was Clyde's wife, Elsa, who orchestrated the whole thing and, in a fit of grief and anger, kills her with lightning. He also tries to kill himself at the same time but it doesn’t work. After her death, he curls up into a ball and starts crying because he feels like he hasnt got any family left but then Lisa shows up and is like "yo the rogues are still here for you bitch"

His emotions affect the weather in this continuity and I’m a weak bitch for that but that’s 100% my bias for Ororo Munroe showing itself lol

James Jesse AKA Trickster (the first one!)

James Jesse was born to the Flying Jesses, famous circus performers. He, however, was afraid of heights, and preferred reading stories of Western criminal Jesse James. 

He invented air-walking shoes to get rid of his acrophobia, and this led to his fame as an aerialist at the circus. Buuut he wanted more excitement in life and became a conman instead! He had a lot of wacky gadgets like exploding teddy bears and, after Barry's death, moved from Central to Hollywood and started working in special effects. 

Like Hartley, he even attended Barry's funeral. He once beat the devil, Neron, at his own game and eventually started using his skills for good, collecting weapons of incarcerated villains so they couldnt fall into the wrong hands. He eventually died protecting Hartley during Final Crisis. Deadshot was the one who got him. 

On Prime Earth his parents were straight up neglectful and, instead of creating his own boots, he stole them from STAR labs instead. This version of him is also WAY more fucked up and murdery then NE to the point us long-term Rogues fans got really upset at how much DC had changed him 

On NE his real name is “Giovanni Giuseppe” (swear this is, like, the only italian name DC knows) and on PE the Flying Jesse's were a deliberate rip off of the Flying Graysons

George “Digger” Harkness AKA Captain Boomerang

The illegitimate son of an American toy-maker, W.W. Wiggins, and an Australian woman, Betty Harkness, George Harkness was raised in poverty in the small town of Kurrumburra, Australia. His stepfather, Ian Harkness, hated the boy and made his life miserable. (Like canonically Ian was an abusive alcoholic and even abused Betty who was too ill to defend herself or George. The reason George goes by "Digger" is cuz that's what his mom used to call him before she died; it's aussie slang for "soldier") 

In school, Harkness crafted a boomerang. He discovered he had great skill with the aboriginal weapon and often used it for mischief with his best friend, Mick Wentworth. He further honed his skills while spending some time hiding from the law in the Australian bush. 

When Digger was eighteen, he and Wentworth robbed a general store and were able to make their escape with the aid of Digger’s boomerang. However, this incident caused Digger’s stepfather to kick him out of the house. 

His mother gave him a plane ticket to Central City and told him to get in touch with Wiggins. Wiggins had been searching for a spokesman for W.W. Wiggins Game Company's latest product, a toy boomerang. Under the alias "George Green", Digger auditioned for and got the job. Wiggins outfitted him with a costume and gave him the name "Captain Boomerang."

Ridiculed by the audience, he took to a life of crime instead.

His story is pretty much the same on PE. The only diff being there was no childhood friend and Digger made boomerangs in an attempt to impress his absentee father. Also he has a habit of making up fake stories about himself lmao 

The only one's he really doesnt stab in the back are the Rogues and Harley Quinn but everyone else? fair game. In Flash: Rebirth he and Barry even exchange favours for info and it’s implied this is a regular thing for them

Roscoe Dillon AKA The Top

He technically appears on PE but he's one of Thawne's acolytes so lets just. Skip that and focus on NE instead

Literally his whole thing is that he was obssessed with spinning tops as a kid and taught himself how to spin fast enough to deflect bullets. He became a criminal, tried to blackmail the entire world once, and was Lisa's first boyfriend! 

He was also her ice-skating coach and taught her how to spin super well like himself! He has a very confusing characterization tho cuz sometimes he was written to be all about revenge and killing but other times he was just like the other rogues; a blue-collar criminal who stole things because he liked to. 

He died eventually which I'm not going to try to explain cuz it's...yeah. There's also this whole thing where he could possess people after his death but this was in the silver age and that shit just happened sometimes so whatever 

In short: Roscoe has a really cool concept to him but nobody really knew how to write him so he ended up all over the place

He also has a Spinning Top shaped satellite in space where he stores all his loot (dont ask)

Mick Rory AKA Heatwave

Mick Rory has pyromania! Very severely! He was born on a farm outside of Central and, as a child, was very fascinated with fire. This turned into an obssession and he ended up burning his house down. So fascinated by the flames, however, he never ran to get help, watching his whole house burn down (and killing his parents inside) and he ended up living with his uncle after this. 

On a schooltrip, his schoolmate stuck him in a meat locker as a prank where he gained Cryophobia (fear of the cold) so in retaliation Mick locked the boy in his house and set the thing on fire (again, pyromania). He ran away again and ended up becoming a fire-eater for a circus. That didn't last long either because, surprise!, he burned the place down. 

Desperate to find a way to help his obssession, he happened to see the Rogues operating in Central and decided to take up villainy. At first he and Len got into a few altercations with eachother due to Mick's fear of the cold but eventually they settled their differences and Len officially brought him into the Rogues. 

Mick kinda relies on them to keep his pyromania in check basically. There was a time where he was, briefly, reformed and gained a close friendship with Barry (even being roommates with him. By then he'd already known Barry's real identity for a few years) and used his pyro knowledge to become a fire-fighter consultant. At one point he even worked for the FBI

His backstory is practically the same on PE the only difference being that he never expressed regret for burning down his house, and actually says he wishes he’d burned down the whole neighbourhood instead

Lisa Snart AKA Golden Glider

When I say her NE version is leagues above PE I mean it. 

Like Len, she suffered abuse under their father and escaped it by becoming a figure skater under the name Lisa Star for the Futura Ice Show! Her fame came from her very fast spins, a trick she was taught by Roscoe. When Roscoe died while fighting Barry (brain complications though there’s more to it, but again I’m not going to get into that) Lisa turned to villainy, blaming Barry for her lover's death. 

Her attempts on Barry and Iris' lives were always foiled. She used a pair of ice skates that created their own ice flow, and had many gadgets that caused hypnotism. She also stole Len's gun once but retooled it into a twirling Baton. 

When Barry died she renounced her feud with him and attempted to go straight again with her brother. They created a company that recovered lost or stolen items. Eventually she returned back to a life of crime, went through three boyfriends, all using the name Chillblaine (she named them that iirc), until the fourth Blaine killed her. Len got revenge on that one 

On PE, however, Lisa had a brain tumor (it got cured later) and was a tag-a-long villain for her brother and her boyfriend, Sam Scudder. This version of her never became a skater and is instead murderous just for...the sake of it. She also has this thing about wanting to be the leader of the Rogues instead of Len, and when she's in charge of them for a while the Rogues’ morals change and killing is suddenly fine so. Whatever. NE Lisa is the best (also her whole outfit? Stunning)

Roy G. Bivolo AKA Rainbow Raider (not technically a Rogue anymore but he was a member for a while)

He appeard on PE as Chroma but gets murdered by Grodd so we only have NE canon to use (they did my mans dirty) 

He was a wonderful painter from an early age but was born colourblind. His father, an optometrist, was determined to create a device that would let him see in full colour. Toy didnt get the device until after his father's death but unfortunately the device didnt let him see colour. 

Instead, the goggles could project beams of light that could become solid objects, make him invisible, blind his opponents, or affect the emotions of his targets. Angry that he couldnt pursue an artistic career. he decided to become a thief and primarily stole famous artwork. He was eventually killed by Amunet Black

Evan McCulloch AKA Mirror Master (second one)

Evan was born to rich parents Louis and Carol Erikson who gave him up for adoption because they were too young to be responsible parents. He ended up at the McCulloch orphanage. 

At age 8 he was molested by one of the older boys there and, in self-defence, ended up drowning the him. At 16 he left the orphanage, taking on the name of the woman who raised him and moves to Glasgow (he’s scottish btw) 

He found that it was super difficult to hold down a job but, needing to make ends meet and constantly breaking the law anyway, he turned to a life of crime and became a hitman and then a professional assassin.

One day he got hired to kill his birth father but was unaware of who his target was until after he took the shot. Grief-stricken, he attended the funeral and tried to work up the nerve to approach his birth mother. By the time he had, she'd committed suicide and he turned himself in for his crimes. 

Either the Scottish or US government gave him Sam's old Mirror Master gear and hired him to be a mercenary. 

His first job was scaring Animal Man into stopping his activism, but he failed because of Animal Man’s wife. Refusing to actually kill the wife and children (thanks to his own morals) he gets fired and helps Animal Man seek revenge.

He continues to work as a criminal and supervillain-for-hire, even working out of costume as a mercernary in Britain.

Eventually he found his way to Central City and joined the Rogues, taking over as Sam Scudders official successor. There was a time where he had a Cocaine Addiction which caused friction between him and Capt Cold because of Len’s rule against drug use. 

Throughout all of this, Evan made sure to donate a portion of all the money he ever got to the McCulloch Orphanage

Axel Walker AKA Trickster (second one) 

On PE, Axel was recruited by the Rogues early on in his career. He messed up during a heist and they kicked him out (they'd never do that but w/e) 

He worked for Mob Rule as a henchman for a bit then went freelance when MB was arrested. He saved Cold's life cuz he felt he still owed Cold a debt. When Grodd took over Central, Axel tried to join his side but Grodd tore his arm off from the bicep (ouch) and left him to die on the street. Axel got himself a cool sleek robot arm and returned to crime anyway. He got accused of murder, Barry cleared his name, but he still got sent to Iron Heights for other charges. 

The Rogues, hearing about this, went to bust him out and were like "okay fine u can hang with us" and he stayed with them from then on

In NE canon, while Jesse was working with the FBI, Axel stole all his gear and ended up working for Penguin in Gotham. Penguin gets attacked by Tarantula, Axel fails to stop her and a few days later he gets caught by Robin (Tim) for causing trouble in Gotham. 

He moves on to work with Amunet Black, but after her defeat is offered to join the “new Rogues” by Capt Cold and accepts the offer. Some stuff happens, he fights the OG Trickster who leaves him in a dumpster and tells him never to pick up the gear again, then Axel answers an ad from some college students asking for a trained hero to teach them some things, he has dinner with them and then kills them all. Neat.

When Jesse died, Axel redonned the Trickster gear and started operating his own crew out of an old Rogues hideout. When the Rogues returned to Central, Axel found out they were gonna retire and go underground. He rejoined them to help them get revenge on Inertia for manipulating them into killing Bart Allen, and he stayed with the group henceforth. 

Evan explained to him that joining the Rogues wasn’t a matter of him wanting to be one, but why he needed to be one

In short: Axel is a punk kid who wants to fit in with the big boys and the Rogues are the only ones who really gave him a chance, acting like his older siblings. It’s worth noting that canon never mentions any relatives for him so, as far as we know, crime is all he’s ever known

To all of Li’s followers and those she loved.... (a letter from her husband)

Hello everyone. It breaks my heart to write this post. 

I knew this was coming. But far far too soon. 

I do not know how to say this well. I am not good with words.

I am not fully aware of how much of her health she shared. But I can say this.

Lianna (Jayme Liana to some) passed away on May 28th at 4 a.m. She had gone into a coma at around noon the day before, but somehow she knew this was it for her. Between her heart problems she had from birth, the stress of the pregnancy, her multiple surgeries and injuries, and the meningitis, it was far too much for her body to fight, and it just started to shut down. 

Li (as I most often called her, from our college days) meant everything to me. 

That day I met her, she was just a clumsy girl in a wheelchair who almost broke her neck trying to do a wheelie. But she quickly made me fall in love with her. We’ve been each others everything for a long time. And now my everything is gone.

It hurts me to know we were married for less than a year, a life ahead of us.  And now that life has been shattered. A lot is beyond repair. 

When Li told me “this is it,” I broke. I myself knew it was the end, yet I still fell apart completely. I am ashamed that I could not pull myself together for her. Not only was I losing her, I also lost our children. The children we never got to have. 

Far too many times in the past two weeks, I have gotten from people around me “it’s a surprise she held on this long.” and other words to that effect. Or the common “Her health cost you so much money.”

Yes she had multiple, many health issues. Yes they were expensive. Were they stressful? Of course. But not like that. I love her. I would do anything for her. Anything. (Mama Rhodey knows that. Nandri, Amma.) 

Li meant everything to me. And I know she meant a lot to you all too. I hate the fact that I have to tell all of you, it hurt, and I know it hurt you. 

She was mostly coherent but in unimaginable pain. We managed to have one last conversation before she slipped away, and I stayed with her until the end.

But she knew already before; she had little time left.

In that last conversation, I look back and wish I said many things. I regret not saying them. Movies always make it look like everyone gets that closure before the end. But that’s not true. There’s always something you wish you said, wish you did. I’m not completely at peace with this. But I’m on that road.  

Our puppy, Kutti is the one thing, along with pictures, letters, art, and other things I have left of her. Yes, I am grieving. It will take time. But she’s no longer in pain. And for that I am so so so grateful.

About a week before she got sick, she and I rewatched A Star is Born. She’d often sing. Singing was something she loved. There are many songs I can apply. But the two I have provided below makes me feel like she is still beside me, singing along.

 One that she sang when she thought I was asleep, that I sang back to her many times when she was in a coma.

The first date

Dear Gabby,

Oh my god oh my god oh my god okay, so remember back when we were little and my cat died? Ugh horrible start. But remember how Jeremy something helped me out and I stayed at his house that night. Like I’ve told you this story before? Okay okay okay so yesterday I went biking (I know aren’t I being like super fit?) But anyways, I fell down and this like super cute doctor boy, so he helped me out, took me to lunch, turns out it’s JEREMY LIKE OH MY GOD ITS FATE. Obviously this is destiny like it takes you first then me? We should have a double wedding. Anyways anyways, I have a second date planned. Should we do bowling or go the beach? I MISS YOU. I checked in on your parents the other day too. Eliona is so upset that you’ve been gone. Expect a letter from her soon in pink glitter ink. How’s the prince? Have you made any friends? I looked down at the letter with a grin and glanced quickly to Mr Cuddles sitting promptly on my bed. I started to pull out a pen and paper to write my response when I was interrupted by a knocking at my door. Right! The first dates! I probably should have remembered considering I was not in a puffy ball gown, instead my maids had picked out for me a pair of black shorts and a white T-shirt. No idea why though.

I stood from my desk and walked over to open the door and saw Ben on the other side just as I had expected.

“Afternoon, Benny boy.”

He smiled and raised an eyebrow, “Benny boy?”

“Emma said she read in a magazine that it was your favored nickname. Figured I’d give it a try. Thoughts?”

“I wouldn’t call it favored. It was started by magazines, but-” He lifted a shoulder with a small smile. “-if you like it go ahead.”

“Nah. I’m gonna stick to Ben. Benny boy doesn’t flow as well in conversation. Though it was fun to guess what your reaction would be. To make it up you can call me Gabby gal sometime.” I said with a slight chuckle.

“So what are we doing?” I asked.

“Well Gabby gal-” He paused and offered his arm “-should I tell you now or keep it a surprise?”

I took his arm, “Hmmmmmm…I like surprises so we’ll keep it a surprise.” I then looked up at him, “Did you try the alarm clock?”

We walked down the stairs and outside past the garden as we talked about clothes, and sleeping, and breakfast until finally we made it to a weird looking baseball field.

“Care to guess what we’re doing?” He asked as he motioned to a bucket of balls, two mittens, and baseball bats.

“Hitt'n balls.” I replied with a smug grin.

He rolled his eyes with a grin, “Great seductive reasoning.” He said and let go of my arm and went to go pick up a mitt and put it on his hand.

“More specifically, a baseball lesson. Up for the challenge?” He asked. Wow baseball, he happened to pick one of the few sports I haven’t learned like the back of my hand.

“Sure. Though I have to warn you schreave. My upper arm strength is about that of an infants and I would know since i have a newborn sister. You saw my guns though so you should already know that.”

He laughed a bit and shook his head, “You’ll be fine, Patterson. It’s just a first lesson after all.” He then picked up another mitt for her, held it out. “You’re left handed, so you’ll put this on your right.”   

I took the mitt for my right hand, “I once did cheerleading for my high school’s baseball team. The boys insisted they deserved cheerleaders just like the other teams. Even though it was small enough that they were on our other teams too.”

“Well baseball deserves to be cheered for.”

“Not our team. I don’t think they knew the difference between a base and a rock. So whos doing what in this?”

He gave a short laugh, “We’re just tossing the ball back and forth for now. Strengthening up those infant arms.”

I chuckled, “Great let’s start then, benny boy.”  

He then started to throw the ball back and forth at me. I caught it with decent ease which surprised me a little. Getting a little cocky I decided I wanted to see how hard I could throw it and have him still catch. I threw it with a little more arm strength though it ended up going about as far as I had before, “So how’d the meeting with the people go that you studied for?” I asked hoping to avoid the embarrassment of my failed throw.

He snickered a bit at my failed attempt which lead me to be a little blushy. “It went well. And what we studied for, your notes were a help you know.” I smiled as he included me in it. I hadn’t wanted to take away from his effort by saying we earlier but it made me happy to know he didn’t see it that way.

“Heh I’m glad. How do they do this in those sports shows. Like the leg up thing?” I asked and tried to mimic the leg up thing but ended up losing balance when I threw and fell on my bum.

He seemed to be holding in laughter as he jogged over to me. I myself felt a bit giggly at myself. I must have looked like such a pleb.

“I think that’s what I would call a failed pitch.” He then bent over and offered me a hand. “You alright?”

I ended up laughed a bit as I took his hand and stood up, “I’m fine. Though a real failed pitch would be something like “ever need a toaster that butters your toast as well as toasts it? Well sometimes life sucks kare-” I drawed off a bit as I noticed a small cut on my hand. Woops. Well at least it doesn’t hurt.

“Woops. Not used to falling on solid ground I guess.” I chuckled then tried to wipe off the cut on my shorts. My mom would have just killed me. But we’re busy it’s not like we have time for a 35 hour cleaning and bandaging for a small cut that doesn’t even hurt.

“Wait don’t do that.” He said and took my off hit mitt and took my hand to look at the cut, his eyebrows furrowing.

Y’know it just hit me. Ben is really similar to my mom. They both seem to forget about their health because of the work. My mom forgetting to eat and only sleeping because my dad is there to make sure she does. Benjamin forgetting to sleep, though from what I’ve seen he seems to eat. They’re both very dedicated to what they do. They also both seem very careful. Benjamin with this cut and mom with her children. Oh well I’m probably looking too far into this and maybe Ben isn’t detail focused like mom at all. But I know I’m right on him having the same problem as mom with getting too involved in their work.

“I mean it’s only a cut it’s not like it needs the focus of surgical operator.” I joked as he looked at the cut.

He glanced at me with an eye roll, “I’m not the one who wiped an open cut on my pants and exposing it to all sorts of things that could infect it.” I couldn’t help by chuckle at all the drama the small cut was causing.

“But it wont. That only happens to like super unlucky people who already only have like one like and an eye. People do it all the time and nothing happens.” I guess pirates. Didn’t they die a lot because of wounds or something?

He snorted, and lifted the hem of his t-shirt slightly to dab the cut with the underside of his shirt slightly, “Better safe than sorry.”

I watched his face as he focused on patting my cut. “Sure. Better safe than sorry can apply. Hey! good thing you wore the black shirt!”

“I’m nothing if not prepared.”

“Oh yeah. Now I’ve seen this trait twice. First with studying for your meeting, now this. Just gonna tick off that prepared check box.” See now if I get asked in an interview for adjectives I’ve got so many.

He smiled and pointed with his thumb to some bats on the ground, “I was going to teach you how to swing, but…” He trailed off as he glanced at my cut hand.

“No no. It doesn’t hurt and I’m no wimp.” I said and haughtily put a hand on my chest.

He looked at me for a moment with just a little bit of a smile, “Alright then.” He picked up a bat, “How much do you know about swinging a bat?” He asked.

“Nothing really. I have swatted away my older sister from a cookie plate with a newspaper before though.” I joked.

“That sounds familiar. So I’ll show you what the stance is and then you can try.” He said then did the baseball stance then went back to normal.

“Got it. So then you just like wack right? Like whack a mole but with a ball?” I asked.

“More or less. Let’s see you try it out first before you whack any moles.” He said and handed me a 2nd bat. I took a few steps away from him and tried to swing which just resulted in the bat flying away and out of my hands. Clearly, I didn’t have a strong enough grip on it.

“Welp. Goodbye.” I stated flatly as the bat flew away. I watched it slowly fall to the ground. It would feel appropriate if the kazoo version of my heart will go on was playing behind it.

Ben laughed out loud as the bat flew away from us both, “You just have to keep your grip firm and adjust your stance. Here, pick it up and I’ll fix any mistakes I see.”

I went over to get the bat and jogged back over once I had it, “I feel like harley Quinn walking with a baseball bat. About to go fight. Steal money. Alright correct me Master baseball.” I said and got back into baseball whacking position.

He snorted, “Harley Quinn has nothing on you.” He said then eyed my stance, he stepped over and tipped my raised elbow up a bit with his hand

“Bring this up slightly and…”  He went to my right shoulder, tapping on it from behind.

“Lower your shoulder. And when you swing, pretend the ball is coming around your waistline, so you’ll swing the bat directly in that area. Swing all the way through, alright?” He said then stepped in front of me with a smile then looked at my hands.

“Oh, as for these-” He put one hand over mine and slid it down closer to my other hand on the bat. “-Keep these close together and hold onto the bat tightly. Try not to throw it to the next city this time.” He said with a chuckle.

I felt my face blush heating up just a little bit as he corrected my stance. God, I’m such a child. I bet the rest of these girls don’t get blushy just from indirect hand holding.

“Alight I got this.” I said then swung the bat with my eyes closed not wanting to see my next failure or attempt.

“Was it good, Jamin’ boy?” I asked but then paused for a moment. Yuck. That is not a good nickname.

“I think benny boy is better than jamin’ boy. That came from jamin in benjamin.” I explained.

“Not too far off from another nickname I now have, but the swing was great. Should we throw in a ball this time?” He asked.

“Alright. I think I’m ready.” I nodded along with my statement of confirmation.

He threw the ball which I easily hit on my first try. Probably beginners luck.

He grinned and watched the ball fly up before coming over to me, “You did it! A natural.” He said.

I chuckled a bit cockily, “Heh I learn fast. You don’t get as good as I am at basketball, surfing, track, cheerleading, and soccer without a skill of learning.” The soccer probably helped me hit the baseball since my eyes are adjusted to tracking fast moving spheres.

“You did all those sports? Wow you’re constantly one upping me, Patterson.” He said with a small impressed smile.

I put a hand on my hip, “Heh well if you didn’t study or do anything else you might have been able to be at my level. Soon I’ll add baseball to my list too.”

He rolled his eyes with a scoff, “I was a little busy with some other things to be at your level.”

Better than being a freeloader, “Poor Benny. Not at my level of doing nothing with their life. If only. Though at least you know what you’re doing.”

“You don’t know what you’d like to be yet?” He asked. Defensively I pushed two of my fingers against his lips so used to being scolded for my indecisiveness.

“Shush. I’m only 18. You know I read that before the castes it was normal to be indecisive at our age about careers. I mean I just haven’t found a three job that I like. I’ll get there I think.”

He nodded with a smile, “I understand. There’s no shame in figuring things out.” He looked around for a moment before plopping down on the ground.

“Are you happy with your career?” I asked. Hoping he would go off on some long tangent and reveal the secret to finding a happy fit.

“Yes. I don’t think I can imagine myself doing much else.” That doesn’t really answer my question, Schreave.

“But do you like it? Not seeing yourself able to do anything else is different. I’m asking is it something you like to do? Like what makes it good?”

“That’s exactly it though. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else because I like it so much. It’s good in that… I can help people. Or at least do everything in my power to try.”

“Huh. I guess that does make sense then. Though sucks for me since I can’t make that apply to myself to try and narrow down my options. The only thing I could ever see myself doing would lead to my mom having my head. I guess I’ll just have to go back to pros and cons lists. Lawyers argue. Maybe that’ll be competitive enough to add adrenaline?” I thought aloud mumbling the last part. I would hate the stiffy law clothes though.

“What kind of job would make your mom that mad at you?” He probably thinks I wanna be a stripper.

“Surfing, running, anything I want to do. She’s a very anti risk person and she sees it as a risk to not stick to your caste. My older sister is trying to be a fashion designer I already saw the massacre of her, don’t want it myself. She’s a very sweet person don’t get me wrong and I love her more than anything but she’s just a very careful person.”  

“Would ever go for it? Leaving your caste?”

“Maybe. I’ve considered it. There have been a few times when I’ve gone really close to just knocking on my parents door and being like “hey this is what im gonna do take it or leave it” I just don’t want to disappoint her. She pulls off the im your disappointed mother look very very well. Thats a big reason of why i started taking a gap year though. I had planned on using it to stall until I got the courage to tell her. But just seeing what’s going on with Riley and how often they are fighting its very down putting.” I must have ruined my image of not being a chicken by now.

“I can’t speak for your mom or your situation but… I imagine someday, if you did leave your caste, your mom would come to terms to it in the end. It comes from a place of love.”

I thought for a moment. Deep down I know he’s right. Mom loves us more than anything in the world and I know that nothing I could do would change that. “You’re right. I know you’re right. At this point it’s just fear.” Crud I need to lighten the mood. This is not first date conversation.

“Though, I’m sure if I can bawk like a chicken for you I can get over any other fear.” I added.

He laughed, throwing some grass over at me. “I think your expert bawking leaves you extra qualified.”

“Plus if I end up chickening out, pun intended, I could just transition from being a freeloader there to hiding in a cupboard here and steal food. I bet I could go months without anyone noticing. Sneak out at night to go surf at the beach, come back in time to sneak some breakfast and other food, then nap in the cupboard for the rest of the day. Sounds like a good life.”

We both talked for a bit more about my idea of living in the cupboard and the amazing dessert I tried while here, a lemon tart. Honestly, I’ll need to get the recipe so I can make them at home. They were like a fairy dance in your mouth.

“Oh look it’s a butterfly cloud!” I exclaimed as we laid down looking up at the sky.

“I see two bats mirroring each other.”

“You must need glasses then. Its 100% a butterfly.”

“As a matter of fact I do. You saw me in them. But right now my contacts help me just fine and those are definitely two bats.”

“Hmmm. You’re right. You were wearing nerdy glasses to study.” Suddenly the worst thought a person could possibly ever have occurred causing me to gasp, “What if I need glasses?”

He snickered, “Maybe you do. Then you’d be just as nerdy as me.”

“Ew ew ew ew I bet you infected me with your nerd cooties.”

He scoffed, “I’m not a disease that’s contagious.”

“Then why is that cloud a bunny?”

“Because you see what you want to see cootie Gabby”

“You saw mirroring bats. At least a butterfly is normal. Maybe your subconscious is telling you you have a long lost twin.” That lead us off onto a whole other topic about Wyatt and Emma until finally we made it back to the glasses.

“You look better with the glasses.” I mumbled.

He sighed, “And yet other people like me without. Can’t please everyone.” He chuckled.

“You look more like a nerd with them. It fits your personality better. At least what I’ve seen of your personality after now 2 meetings which is clearly everything.”

“Nerd seems to be the common descriptor for me so I’ll take it. You’re a little nerdy too you know?”

“I am not. I was a cheerleader that’s like the opposite of a nerd. I’m like a total jock through and through I made Cs and Bs in school. You probably made straight As.”

“There’s a very diverse group of nerds. You’re definitely included in that. And me getting good grades is just that whole dedication thing we talked about.”

I thought for a moment about hist statement, giving it deep consideration, “Hmm. You make a valid point, schreave. But due to mt stubborn nature I’ll only accept total defeat. We’ll do rock paper scissors to determine if I, Gabriella Rose Marie Patterson, am an actual through and through nerd.”

“And I, Benjamin Luke Schreave, declare that you will be proved wrong.” He sat up and faced me, sitting indian style as he held up a fist over his palm. “Best two out of three.”

I sat up and mimicked his sitting position. A plan already in my head. Paper every time. He’ll overthink it and expect me to change it at the last round. “Your on, schreave. Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.” I held my hand out flat as his two fingers making a scissor notion attacked.

It was his turn next so I waited in eager suspense as he counted down. This time my paper suffocated his fist. I took a breath in as we got to the final round. All of my life depended on this, was I truely a nerd? Had I been mislead all this time to believe I was a jock? Who am I really? Who is Gabriella Rose Marie Patterson. Only this next tie breaking throw would reveal.

“Hah I’m gonna win now for sure. I always win if i win the 2nd one. Rock, paper, shoot.” I stated trying to scare him and get him to slip up in a state of panic.

My flat hand was soon cut by his two fingers as I had to accept defeat. “Streak is over, Patterson. Welcome to the nerd club.”

We talked for a moment about cookies, then about Benjamins poor health as he commented that he didn’t really go outside much. What is he? A vampire? First he doesn’t sleep, now he doesn’t even go outside?

“How’d you enjoy your first baseball lesson? Not too terrible?” He asked starting to wrap up our date.

“Not horrible. I still don’t know how to play baseball. But i can throw and hit a baseball.” I pointed out.

He gave a small smile, “We’ll save the logistics for next time.” He said and stood up. He brushed himself off before offering me a hand.

“Yup and for now if a robber breaks in I know how to hit em.”

“No one can go up against you, Patterson.” He said and offered me an arm.

“Normally true. Apparently, I lost at rock paper scissors though. But overall we’re tied. I won the bawking you win the hand game.”

We began to walk back to the palace as we spoke, “Hmm. We are tied. Anything else you can come up with that I can beat you at?”

“Hmmmm that no. But things I could beat you at? Tons. Checkers, uno, poker, surfing, hot dog eating, cooking, speed reading.” I listed.

He scoffed, “Please, at least half of it is stuff I could win.”

“Doubt it, schreave. I get it though you’re trying to protect your frail ego. If that’s what you need to think you can think that.”

“My /frail ego?/ Trust me, my ego is plenty intact. And I’ll just have to prove you wrong.”

“Hmm looking forward to being proved wrong then, Benjamin.”

He smirked as we got back to my room, “Me too. Well we’ve reached your destination, Gabby gal.”

“Thank you for walking me back, Benny boy.” I let go of his arm and walked in front of him and then firmly shook his hand. “Is this how you end dates, business deals, or both?” I asked.

He shook my hand seeming amused by the gesture then said, “I can give you a hug if you prefer.”

I felt myself tense a little bit. Was that too much for a first date? Could I even handle a hug? We held arms already but isn’t holding hands between hugging and arm holding? Gosh I don’t know anything about dating.

“Hmmmm. I don’t know if we’re there yet or not. How bout we do a side hug, see if that’s far enough and if we can go further we’ll make the big leap for a straightforward hug?” I suggested.

He laughed at my suggestion, “Side hug it is.” He said then we both did a quick side hug. Oh that wasn’t so tough. Didn’t feel too emotional either.

“Hmmm. I’ll take the normal hug now too.” I said with a bit of a smile.

He smiled too, “What an upgrade.” He said and gave me a hug. My head ended up being at his chest as we hugged. I felt a little flustered at the hug. I stood a little bit on my tip toes so I could have my arms go over her shoulders. Soon though we pulled away.

“Did I meet your hug standards?” He asked.

“Yes. I would say you met the standards well. You get an A+.” I said referencing his A- on bawking.

He grinned, “Just another thing I excel at.”

I rolled my eyes a bit at his cheeky grin, but ended up grinning myself, “Well I had fun, Ben. I’ll see you around I’m sure.”

“I’m very sure.” He gave a small smile and wave, “Have a nice rest of your day, try not to cut yourself anymore.” Cut myself? I don’t cut mysel- oh yeah I fell on my bum.

I waved back to him, “I’ll try but there’s only so much I can do. Bye bye.”

“Byyyye.” He waved once more before turning away and putting his hands in his pockets. I watched him go just to be sure there wasn’t anything else to add before I went back into my room. I just had my first date. Giddily I went over to my desk and saw my paper and pen that I had out from earlier.

So I was wondering if Maria inherits Tony's heart condition or maybe she's sickly like Steve was Maybe she gets sick when she's like 3 and everyone panics and dotes on her and cuddles with her. Maybe t'challa sends her her own panther cub to cuddle with and she names it something like midnight. I totally understand if you don't want to write this...writing sick kids can be rough!!

Maria is as healthy as a baby can be. Tony is proud of bearing his alphas three healthy babies. (He’s also kinda proud of not dying in child birth.) Maria is bright-eyed and gummy-smiled. Tony dotes on her and at first he’s worried of making the boys jealous–but then he sees Harley playing peek-a-boo with the baby and blowing raspberries on her tummy, and Peter sends a beautiful blanket that he’d knitted. So they’re doting on the baby too. Tony loves to just stare at his baby and soak in the warm feelings of pride and joy over her.

So he’s more than a little devastated when Maria falls ill and Bruce and Helen rush in to see to her. He’d known that the first few years were difficult on babies’ health but Maria–Maria had been so healthy. She’d been laughing just that morning. He tries to see what’s happening with her but Bruce and Helen are focused on her, keep shouldering him away because they need to concentrate.

Bucky tries to lead Tony away but Tony shrugs him off, so Steve bodily picks him up and carries him out of the room kicking and screaming. Sarah watches Steve struggle to hold Tony sadly before going into the room. Bucky’s frightened; he remembers how close Steve had been to dying as a child, and Erskine, the only one that had known how to treat him, has long been dead.

But Sarah comes out, looking relieved, and she shakes her head. “It’s not what Steve had.” Bucky and Steve sag in relief.

Tony breaks free of Steve’s grip while he’s distracted and tries to run back into the room, but he runs into Bruce in the doorway. “Bruce!”

Bruce grabs his shoulders and sighs, sad-eyed. “I’m sorry, Tony.”

“NO!” Tony shouts, and then lets out the most horrifyingly mournful sound and buries his face against Bruce’s chest. Steve and Bucky feel as if their world has just turned upside down. Sarah and Harley feel cold down to their bones.

“Oh my God, she’s not dead!” Helen shouts from the bedroom, and they’re angry for a moment before they realize Tony is still crying in earnest, and Bruce is holding him tight and trying to soothe him.

Maria has the same heart problem as Tony. It wouldn’t be that big a deal, except Erskine had been the one to figure out the right dosage of motherwort for baby Tony before he’d been sent to help Steve. Figuring out the dosage for a baby is difficult. So much could go wrong. Too much might give her a heart attack; too little and it won’t do anything to affect her condition. And for a baby, the possibility of going from too little to too much is terrifyingly easy. There’s the option of not treating her until she’s old enough that it wouldn’t be so dangerous, but she’s gotten so ill being untreated already–it might be just as dangerous to not try.

They discuss it. Tony weeps the entire time, trembling, but Bucky curls his arm around him to try and calm him down. In the end they don’t really see an option. To let Maria go untreated would be just as bad as trying to figure out a dosage at this point. If it’s the choice between doing nothing and her dying, and trying and her dying, they’re going to try. Maria deserves the try.

(Steve and Bucky are heartbroken when Tony tearfully apologizes to them for Maria inheriting his heart problem, as if he had any control of that. It isn’t something for him to feel guilty over. They were lucky that Peter and Harley didn’t inherit any of their health problems. It wasn’t unexpected that one of their children would get something from one of them. They were just lucky it wasn’t what Steve had had. Bruce had been poring over Erskine’s notes, but he wouldn’t have been able to even begin treating whatever Steve had had.)

A Man of Mystery

--An Abe & Duff Short Story by Sean Patrick Little

  The young woman walked into a bar with all the subtlety of a tornado touching down in a suburb. She kicked open the door with a long, slender leg and strode into the center of the narrow club with all the eyes in the place on her. She had a short black skirt that hugged her hips and a billowy white pirate blouse that was cut in a low vee at the neck. She flashed a brilliant smile and made eye contact with all six of the men in the bar. “What’s up, gents?

None of the men answered her. Women were not forbidden at Wheels’s Bar, but they were never exactly running rampant there, either. There were a few ladies who might stop in now and then, but none of them were regulars. Wheels’s place was one of those hole-in-the-wall dives that had a couple of TVs that played a nonstop dose of Chicago-area sports and a few tables along one wall opposite the bar where the regulars took up tall stools. It was not a hip hangout. It did not have fancy blender drinks. Most of the place seemed to be the exact opposite of the sort of joint a woman of any sort of discerning taste would ever set foot. From the outside, the place looked like it was a few days away from being condemned. It did not attract customers. If you were there, it was because you wanted to be there.

None of the men in the bar could be considered a catch. The bartender, Wheels, was a former one-percenter gone into nomad status in a sort of semi-retirement. At one point in his life, he would have struck fear into the heart of anyone who saw him coming down the road on a heavily customized Harley-Davidson. The other five guys were all pudgy, soft, blue-collar minions, most with a Tinder profile that went perpetually unswiped.

The men in the bar were not exactly agog at the sudden presence of an attractive and dynamic woman, but neither did the know how to process her suddenly showing up in their depressing little den of waning testosterone.

The woman did not seem to notice their discomfort. She walked right up to the bar. “How’re the Cubs doing?”

Rodridgo “Sally” Salazar, a paunchy Latino who normally worked as a painting contractor, swallowed the mouthful of Miller Lite he’d forgotten to swallow when the woman kicked in the door. “Uh, not great.”

“Typical.” The woman slapped a black Visa card onto the bar. “You take fantastic plastic, I assume?”

Wheels Wright shrugged. “All forms of legal tender and credit are acceptable at Wheels’s Bar. What are you drinking?”

“What do you have that’s expensive?”

Expensive drinks were not usually served at Wheels’s place. A retired bus driver with abnormally hair eyes named Billy Butkis, leaned forward. “I think Wheels has a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue somewhere in here.”

“Perfect!” The woman nodded toward the stack of bottles at the mirrored counter behind Wheels. “Let’s crack that sucker open and pour some drinks for me and all my new friends.”

“I can’t afford to drink no JW Blue,” said Billy.

“I’m buying, friend. I’m Tracy, by the way. C’mon, let’s have some fun.” She pushed the card toward Wheels.

The bartender picked it up and swiped it through the old card machine next to the register. After a second, it spit out a receipt. His eyebrows arched in surprise; he had probably been expecting it to be rejected. “I guess everyone’s drinking Blue tonight.”

There was a mild cheer from the guys at the bar.

Sally was impressed. “Can I make mine a double? I ain’t never had any fancy whiskey before?”

“Fuck it; make ‘em all doubles,” said Tracy. “Doubles for everyone.”

Wheels stacked up five glasses and poured a health slug into each.

 Tracy did a quick head count. “There’s seven of us here. We need two more.”

 “Nah.” Wheels pointed to his ever-present mug of black coffee. “I’m sober almost ten years, and that sad sack in the corner only drinks beer.” Wheels jabbed a thumb at a chubby man in a hooded sweatshirt and Milwaukee Brewers cap. He was bald beneath the cap, and clean-shaven. He had sad eyes and a pale complexion.

 “You only drink beer?” Sally looked at the guy in the Brewers cap. “I never noticed.”

 The man held up his Miller Lite. “If you’re buying, you can refill this thing for me.”

 “Done.” Tracy nodded at Wheels. “Give the man with the bad taste in baseball teams a Miller Lite on me and split whatever’s left in the bottle of blue into these glasses.”

 Wheels did as she bid and killed the rest of the bottle, filling each of the five lowball glasses to a potentially lethal level. “That’s a lot of whiskey, hey?”

 “Hey, indeed.” Tracy picked up her glass and held it aloft in front of her. “To new friends.” The other men at the bar quickly snatched up their glasses and held them aloft, echoing her toast. Tracy clinked her glass to the other four glasses of whiskey and nodded toward the Miller Lite drinker in the corner. He did not return the gesture, only picked up his bottle and took a drink, his eyes drifting back to the TV where the Cubs were blowing a three-run lead in the top of the seventh.

Tracy was bubbly and fun. The regular barflies were a little shocked by this. They usually sat at the bar in sullen silence, ate the free peanuts while they drank their bottles of major-label beers, and cursed at the Cubs’ middle-relievers when they hung curveballs over the center of the plate that ended up getting tattooed into the deep left field bleachers. Tracy told bawdy jokes. She laughed easily. She asked the guys questions that made them feel like she was really interested in them. And most importantly, she kept buying drinks.

At one point, she noticed the dusty jukebox in the far corner of the bar. “Does that thing still work?”

Wheels nodded. “Works great. None of these cheap-asses ever uses it, though.”

“We’d rather hear the game,” said Sally.

Tracy turned on her stool and dropped to the floor on unsteady legs, the effects of the copious amounts of booze evident as she swayed over to the machine. She flipped through the lists of available songs. “Christ. Is there anything on this thing from before 1976?”

“No. I wouldn’t risk accidentally hearing disco,” said Wheels.

“I tried to get him to put some Duran Duran on there once.” Sally covered his neck with his hands defensively. “Wheels threatened to cut me with a broken bottle.”

“Plenty of Beach Boys, if you’re into real music.” Billy added his two cents. “Far as I’m concerned, Brian Wilson is twice the musical genius John Lennon ever was.”

Tracy patted her miniskirt. “No pockets. Anyone got a dollar?”

Sally rushed over to her side, his roly-poly body jiggling all the way. He handed her a five-dollar bill. “Least I can do to pay you back for the drinks.”

“This will get us thirty songs.” Tracy fed the bill into the machine. She started tapping in the codes for different tracks. In seconds, the thin audio of the ball game commentary was buried beneath the harmonies of the Beach Boys.

Tracy danced on wobbly legs. Sally started dancing along with her, doing his own, arrhythmic version of 1950s craze, The Jerk. Tracy danced back to the bar and bought another round. The Blue was gone, so she had Wheels fetch his second-best whiskey, a liter of J. Henry & Sons from a micro-distillery in Dane, Wisconsin.

Wheels watched Tracy with concern. “You’re kind of poring it on there, miss. You going to be alright?”

“Are you my dad? Believe me, I can hold my liquor.”

“I never doubted you could. Just pointing out that you’ve had a lot for someone your size.”

Tracy winked at Wheels. “You calling me skinny?”

“Something like that.”

“I’ll take it. How ‘bout you use my card and order us a few pizzas? You boys want some pizzas?”

“I could eat.” Sally resumed his seat at the bar.

“I ain’t never seen you turn down food,” said Billy.

Dirty Ernie, a tall, almost anorexic Black man who got his unfortunate nickname because he worked for Waste Management, ponied up to the bar next to Sally. “Get extra. I only got this skinny because I end up in the chow line behind Sally too much.”

“Hey, if you can’t outrun me, that’s on you, Ernie.”

Wheels handed Tracy the cordless phone from under the bar. “You want pizza, go ahead. I don’t have a problem with that.”

Tracy winked at Wheels when she took the phone. She called the place down the street, ordered three large pies, and gave them her credit card info over the phone. Twenty minutes later, three pizzas were walked through the door by a college kid. After he set them on the bar, he handed Tracy the receipt. She scribbled out her signature on the receipt along with a tip.

When the kid saw the tip, his eyes got big. “Ma’am, I think you made a mistake.”

“I know what I did. It’s a gift. Thanks for all you do.”

The kid could barely stammer a thank-you. He backed out of the bar with a smile on his face that even a kick to the nuts would not have washed away.

“What’s the occasion?” Dirty Ernie helped himself to a couple of slices of pepperoni. “You’re spending a lot of money here tonight.”

“I won the lottery,” said Tracy. “I just wanted to spread some of my good fortune.”

“No foolin’?” Sally’s jaw dropped open. “I been buyin’ them fuckin’ tickets for twenty years. Once, I won twenty-four bucks. That’s about it, though.”

“Some days, it just feels good to be lucky, I guess.”

Tracy kept buying drinks until the rummies were good and soused. They ate the pizzas, even Wheels and Duff had a couple of slices. They danced to the thirty songs. Billy and Pauly Ryecliff fell asleep on the bar. Sally eventually got logy and collapsed in a sitting position against the wall. Ernie fell asleep sitting up with his jaw propped up on his hand.

Tracy took the hint. She was practically asleep herself. “Well, I should get on home, I guess.”

“You want me to walk you home?” Wheels looked around. “I could lock these idiots in here for a while. They’d never notice we were gone.”

 Tracy held up her phone. “I’m getting an Uber. I’ll be fine.” She kicked off her heels before she dared to climb down off her stool. She was listing hard. It took effort and a hand on the bar to steady herself to pick up her shoes. “I’ll be fine,” she reiterated. “I had a good time with you guys. Thanks.”

“Come back anytime.” Wheels held out the black credit card for her. She grabbed at it, missing a few times before she finally caught it. “You sure you’re okay?”

 “I’m perfect.” Tracy saluted Wheels. “It was nice meeting you all.” Her words slurred together in a drunken jumble. She looked at the fat man in the Brewers cap. “Even you, Mr. Baseball.”

The man just nodded at her. He hadn’t said more than three sentences all night. He just kept watching the game.

Tracy inhaled a deep, cleansing breath of stale barroom air and let it go slowly through pursed lips. It helped to clear her head. She glanced down at her phone. “My Uber is almost here. Thanks, fellas.”

From his spot on the floor, an extremely inebriated Sally tried to say something, but it only came out as nonsense. Hearing the nonsense made him laugh. Laughing made him tip over onto his side, which only made him laugh harder until the laughter suddenly switched to snoring.

Tracy smiled down at him. “Lightweight.”

“Might be the first time he’s been called lightweight in his lifetime.” Wheels flipped the switch by the end of the bar that controlled the open sign in the window. The red neon in the window went dark.

Tracy stumbled out to the sidewalk. It was late September and far too cold for a miniskirt and pirate blouse. The booze had screwed with her internal thermostat, though. She felt the cold press at her skin, but that was as far as it got. Her head was hot, and her face felt warm. The cold air felt good. It was trying to balance out how hot the booze made her feel.

 Tracy walked down the block. There was no Uber. There had never been an Uber. She did not even have the Uber app on her phone. Where she was going, she did not need an Uber. She walked to the parking garage down the street on the corner. She ditched her shoes in a trashcan next to the garage. Then, she slipped into the enclosed staircase and started walking up the sixteen flights to the eighth floor. Ten steps up, turn around on the landing, and another ten steps to the second floor. Repeat until she hit the top.

 She was winded and jelly-legged by the time she got to the eighth floor. The booze was really surging through her bloodstream now. It made her eyelids heavy and her body feel like lead. She had come to far to fail, though. She had a plan and was going to carry it through.

 Tracy pushed through the door at the eighth story of the parking garage and froze. The fat guy in the Brewers cap was standing there leaning on a cane.

 At first, Tracy was amazed but then she got angry. “Are you stalking me? You some kind of pervert?” She could not remember his name. Dan? Dave? Fluff?

 “Nope. Not in the least. I just figured I’d come up here and try to talk you out of killing yourself.”

 His words ran through Tracy like a spear. She suddenly felt very, very cold.

 “What?”

 “You heard me.”

 “How? How did you get here before me?”

 The fat man pointed with his cane toward the opposite corner of the garage. “Elevator over there.”

 She looked over and cursed under her breath. “Well, I came up here for a reason.”

 “I know. That’s why I followed you.”

“How did you know?”

 The fat man shrugged. “I’m a private investigator. That’s what I do.”

 Tracy turned and walked toward the nearest ledge. “That didn’t explain it.”

 The man followed her limping badly and leaning heavily on his cane. “I knew you were planning to kill yourself about thirty seconds after you came into the bar.”

 Tracy stopped and turned back to him. “How.”

The fat man stopped. “Four things, really: First, you were spending way too much money on strangers. That meant you did not care about paying bills; you were having a last hurrah. Second, the fact that you came into a dead-end bar where you knew you wouldn’t know anyone. You didn’t want to run into anyone you knew either because you felt they might know what you were doing and try to stop you or because you were scared or too sad to see them. Third, you were drinking like someone who wanted to get drunk enough to make bad decisions. You weren’t about to have sex with any of us pathetic degenerates from the bar, so it had to be that you were prepping yourself for a different sort of mission, one where being too drunk to think would be helpful. And lastly, and most importantly, that’s a hell of a tan-line on your left hand where the engagement ring used to be.”

 Tracy’s cheeks were suddenly cold. She was crying and the wind was freezing her tears on her skin.

 “You want to talk about it?”

 Tracy shook her head. She started to climb up the chest-high wall at the edge of the garage. “Don’t try to stop me.”

 “Wouldn’t dream of it. We are all free and independent, aren’t we? If you want to take yourself out of this world, well that’s your right as a sentient being with free will.” The fat man limped over to the wall ten feet to Tracy’s right. He was taller than she was. He leaned his head over the edge and looked down. A low whistle escaped his lips. “That’s a long way down. That’ll do the job, for sure. You won’t even know what hit you.”

Tracy boosted herself to the ledge by using a Volkswagen bumper as a stepping stool. “I’m here for a reason.”

 “No doubt. If you want to die, this is a guaranteed way to do it. You’ll probably bounce when you hit the pavement. Did you know that? Human bodies actually bounce when they hit pavement from these sorts of heights. People thing they just go splat, but it’s actually way more disgusting.”

 “Stop talking.” Tracy’s stomach was starting to roil. She looked over the edge and a combination of booze, fear, and adrenaline made her guts lurch like she was going over a big wave.

 “The trauma of hitting the sidewalk from this height, there’s no surviving it. You’ll probably break a lot of important bones. Your chest cavity will collapse, and rib fragments will pierce your lungs and heart. Your skull will probably fracture. Your aorta will tear. You won’t feel a thing, though. You’ll be dead the second you hit the ground. No pain.”

 “Stop. Talking.” Tracy tried to put emphasis on her command, but her stomach betrayed her. She suddenly spewed a whole night’s worth of pizza and booze eight stories down to the sidewalk.

 “That was a good precursor to the main event.” The guy limped a little closer to her. “Before you do this, why don’t you tell me why you’re doing it? You know, for the statement I’ll inevitably have to give to the police who show up and demand to know why I didn’t try to physically restrain you before you did your best Franz Reichelt impression?”

 “Who?”

 “Franz Reichelt. He invented the parachute. Well, sort of. He tried to test his invention and took a header off the Eiffel Tower. It’s not important. Tell me what brought you up here.”

Tracy did not want to be on the ledge at that moment. Her stomach was still reeling. She launched a second volley of vomit to the sidewalk. Her sinuses were burning from bile and whiskey.

 She dropped off the wall and slid to a sitting position alongside the silver Jetta. “It’s been a bad year.”

 The fat man limped around to the front end of the Jetta. He stopped eight feet from her. “Tell me about it.”

Tracy swiped vomit from her chin with the sleeve of her shirt. “It’s just another woe-is-me sob story. Everyone has one.” She was suddenly very lucid and sober as if puking the booze in her stomach eight stories down had rid her of all the poison in her bloodstream. Maybe it was the adrenaline that was giving her clarity.

 “I like woe-is-me stories,” said the man.

 Duff. Tracy suddenly remembered his name.

 “What kind of a name is Duff?”

 “Irish.”

“No, I mean, what does it mean?”

 “It means I’m mad at my dad. What’s your story?”

 Tracy shook her head. She looked up at the night sky. In Chicago, only a few stars were visible high above them because of the light pollution. “I never knew my dad.”

 “By choice?”

 “My mom said he died in Iraq when she was pregnant with me. She never told his family.”

 “Ah. By accident, then.”

 “My mom worked her ass off to raise me and keep a roof over our heads. She only had a G.E.D., but she did it. I didn’t have much, but I never went hungry. And we used to laugh all the time. We had fun together.”

 “Past tense, I see. I imagine she died, then? I’m going to guess she died in what? March? April at the latest?” Duff took another step toward her. He leaned against the front fender of the Jetta.

 “March twenty-third. Breast cancer. How’d you know?”

 “It would take that long for you to get the bottom of your proverbial barrel. Let me guess what’s next: Your fiancé was banging your best friend?”

 Tracy’s eyes went wide. “Yes! How’d you know that?”

 “Logical guess. Your mom’s death was traumatic. You probably retreated into yourself for a bit. Your best friend was around a lot trying to make you feel better. Your boyfriend was doing his best but felt powerless. You were too depressed to do anything for him, so he felt neglected. Things happen. I’ve seen it before.”

 “Found out about their affair a few weeks ago when Danny called off the wedding. He got Jasmine pregnant. All my friends sided with them because I’ve been so depressed. They actually blamed me for the affair.”

 Duff grimaced. “Ouch. That’s a kick in the ass.”

 “I lost my mother, my fiancé, and my best friend inside of six months.”

 “Let me guess—it gets worse?”

 Tracy bit back a sob. “I found out last week that I can’t ever have a baby. Congenital infertility.”

 Duff’s eyebrows raised on his forehead. “Wow. That’s…wow. I get it. All that shit happens to me, I’m probably chucking myself off a parking garage, too.”

 “Why am I even here?”

 “Because you were going to go out in a blaze of street pizza. Did you forget?”

 Tracy rolled her eyes at Duff. “No, I meant, why am I here in the big picture sense? What’s the fucking point?”

 “Of Life?”

 “Of Life. Why do we bother? All my dreams got wrecked in six months. My mom never got to see me walk down the aisle in a white dress. I went from planning a wedding to single. I lost my best friend. I’ll never get to be a mom. What does it all mean if I can’t have the life I want?”

 Duff shrugged. He slid down to a sitting position alongside the Jetta. It was a painful series of movements to get to that point. He moved like an old man despite being in his mid-forties. “You want to know a secret? Most of us never get the life we want. My parents wanted me to be Ph.D. in some sort of highfalutin degree program. I ended up being a dirt-poor private detective because it’s the only thing I’m good at. It’s nowhere near the life I wanted, but it’s the life I got.”

 Tracy looked over to Duff with red-rimmed eyes. “What keeps you going?”

 Duff thought about it for a moment. He weighed a few option in his head before he declared, “Pure fucking spite.”

 “Really?”

 “Really.” Duff gestured toward the sky. “Look at that. You get more than a few miles up and we die without oxygen tanks or pressurization. Get out of this atmosphere, and we die. Seventy-something percent of this big, stupid rock is covered with water. We can’t breathe in that water. A lot of this planet is freezing cold. We die without the proper clothing and shelter. A lot of the planet is burning hot. We die there without shade and water. The parts of the planet that do adequately support human life have things like tornados, flash floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.”

 “What are you getting at?”

 “I’m saying that since we evolved out of great primate ancestor as a minor surface annoyance to the planet, we’ve had to deal with the fact that Earth doesn’t want us here. It is constantly trying to kill us. Not only that, but we’re the only creature that understands that this grand failed experiment eventually ends. We have to live every day with the specter of death hanging over us and the knowledge that none of us truly knows what comes next. That’s a pretty heavy burden for a normal mind. That’s an even heavier burden for a mind that’s dealing with trauma. Believe me, lady, it never surprises me when someone chooses the easy road out. In fact, I’m surprised most of us don’t do it. This world is crazy.”

 “Then why haven’t you?”

 Duff looked around them. He shrugged. “Because it’s the only way I can flip middle fingers at the whole system. The system doesn’t want any of us here. The Earth is trying to kill us. The Universe is trying to kill us. We can’t live in the oceans. The atmosphere occasionally throws wind, arctic cold, and random bolts of electricity at us in an attempt to kill us, and we just keep going.” Duff raised his right arm to the sky and extended his middle finger at the dark blue-black heavens above them. “I’m still here because whatever runs this whole thing hasn’t figured out how to kill me yet. I keep living because by living, it means I’m outsmarting the big organism that continually tries to shuffle me off its mortal coil.”

 Tracy swallowed hard. It felt like there was a stone in her throat. It burned when she swallowed. “I don’t think I can go on, though.”

 “Why not?”

 “Because I just feel like I can’t. I can’t stand to see one more day. I don’t know why.”

 “If you don’t know, then you’ve got a mystery on your hands. You can’t quit life with a mystery to solve.”

 Tracy bit back a sob that tried to escape. “Spoken like a true detective.”

 “Spoken like a guy who has been where you are. Spoken like a guy who knows what you’re going through. I weighed it out. I did the math. Quitting Life is easy. For some people, maybe it’s the right thing to do. Emphasis on ‘maybe.’ Me? I want to piss Life off some more before I finally go. We get few enough precious spins around the Sun anyhow. It’ll be over before we know it. No need to end it early.”

 There was a long silence between them. Tracy let tears slide down her cheeks.

 “My ass hurts.” Duff listed to his right side and rubbed at his butt with his left hand.

 This made Tracy laugh. It was a short, barking laugh but it was still a laugh. “Was I being stupid?”

 “When you were rooting for the Cubs earlier? Absolutely.”

 She smiled. “No, dummy. I mean just now.”

 “There was a Superman comic some years ago where a girl was going to jump from a ledge. Superman told her if she honestly did not believe she would never again have another happy moment, then she should jump, and he would let her fall.”

 “Did he let her fall?”

 Duff shook his head. “She took his hand, and Sup’ got her the help she needed.”

 “So, I need help?”

 “We all need help.”

 “Even you?”

 Duff gave her a half-smile. “Especially me. I’m a fucking slow-motion train wreck.”

 Tracy got to her feet and walked back to the ledge. Her legs were unsteady. She felt sick and dizzy. She looked down at the sidewalk far below. “If I want to jump, will you let me?”

 Duff gestured at his bum ankle with his cane. “Look at me, lady. I’m half-crippled, obese, and slow. If you wanted to jump, you could be kissing pavement before I could get to my knees.” Duff made no move to get up. He laid his cane across his lap. “We are all creatures of free will. If you want to go, you’ll go. Maybe not now. Maybe not tomorrow. But, if you’re dead set on going, pardon the pun, no force on the planet could stop you.”

 “Not even you?”

 “Especially not me.”

 Tracy looked back at the sidewalk. Her eyes drifted up to some of the high-rises around them. People were living in those buildings. They were watching TV or sleeping. They were raising families. They were raising pets. They were learning new languages, or learning how to play guitar, or playing a PlayStation game they played too many times before because it was a comforting escape from reality.

 “Duff?”

 Duff did not answer. He knew she knew he was right there.

 “Duff, I think I want to go home.”

 Duff said nothing.

 Tracy turned around. The big man had somehow gotten up silently and was already limping away toward the elevator.

 “Did you hear me? I said I want to go home.”

 Duff stopped and turned to face her. “So go. Free will, remember. You’re a creature of choice, not habit.”

 “But, you—”

 Duff turned back toward the elevator. He kept going.

 Tracy was confused. She started to walk after him.

 “You’re wasting your time.” A voice from the door to the stairs stopped her cold. The bartender, the man they called Wheels, was standing in the doorway with two Chicago cops, a tall, Black man, and a shorter, stouter White woman.

 Tracy’s jaw hung open. “How long have you been there?”

 “Long enough.” Wheels jutted his chin toward Duff. “You’re wasting your time with him.”

 “Why? What? Where is he going?” Tracy was confused. “I thought he was concerned.”

 “He was, in his own way. He wouldn’t have followed you if he wasn’t.” Wheels walked over to Tracy and took her by the arm. He walked her toward the stairs leading her gently.

 “So, why did he leave?”

 “Because he’s Duff.”

 Tracy let herself be helped by the two police officers. The women took Tracy’s other arm. She spoke lowly to her, comforted her. The staircase was warmer than the top of the parking ramp. An ambulance came around the corner of the ramp and stopped at the staircase. Two EMTs got out. They had one of those silver foil thermal blankets and they wrapped it around Tracy while they helped her into the back of the unit. Tracy let them.

Wheels watched as the EMTs strapped her to the bed in the back of the truck. “Get better, okay?”

Tracy nodded. “Tell Duff I said thanks, will you?”

I will. He won’t care. But, I will.”

One EMT climbed into the back of the truck with Tracy. The other closed the doors and ran back to the driver’s seat. After a moment, the truck lurched forward and began the slow descent down the parking ramp.

Wheels watched from the top of the ramp until the truck was spat out the ramp’s exit. It drifted off into the night, red-and-white lights spinning on the roof rack, but no siren. In moments, it blended into the wash of lights and was gone.

    A fat guy with a cane limped back to his apartment. He stopped at the taqueria on the first story of his building and got three carne asada tacos to go. He climbed the stairs to his apartment slowly, using his good leg to propel himself up each step and dragging his weak ankle after like a dead weight. He stopped to rest twice, and in those rest periods, a taco met its fate.

Duff keyed the door to his apartment and limped into his room. There was no bed in his room, only a plush recliner. Duff flopped into the chair and popped the footrest. He turned on the TV. A MASH rerun was on. It wasn’t one of his favorite episodes—it was the one where Hawkeye and B.J. pretend to be nice to Frank—but it would do.

The next morning, when his business partner, Abe, would come into the office, Abe would ask Duff, “What did you do last night?”

Duff would answer, “I watched MASH.”

Abe would ask, “Is that all?”

 And Duff would answer, “Yep.”

2019 Reading List

One of my favorite things since rediscovering reading for fun as a form of self-care is reflecting on the books I’ve read over the course of a year. In 2018, I read 69 books because I have the sense of humor of a 15-year-old boy. This year, I set a goal of 70 books (one more than last year) and was pleasantly surprised to have surpassed it. I think the majority of the surprise stems from the fact that I read some really bad books at the beginning of the year and got stuck in a rut. But then a few good books came along and reminded me that reading can help clear my mind and allows me to see the problems plaguing my lab work from a different perspective. I’m also incredibly proud because this year marks the first year that I have chosen to read so many non-fiction novels.

If last year was twenty-gay-teen (based on my reading list), this year continued in much the same vein. The general unifying theme for most of the books that I read this year is the intersectional nature of our identity. While lot of the books I read (unintentionally) mainly centered around explorations of cultural, gender, and/or sexual identity, many also included the intersection of mental health (directly or indirectly). The books I read this year challenged my perception of how others view their identities while also prompting me to reflect on my own identity and how I fit into the context of our larger society. I wish many of these books had been published when I was younger because they would’ve helped me feel less alone and given me a sense of community. Despite this, I’m glad I have had the opportunity to read these books now because they have prompted and supported enormous personal growth. I can’t wait to see what is in store for reading in 2020!

They came so close that my horse blind-bolted. I got up, pulled the range and the moment I sat down, the saddle hit me hard. It hit so hard that I could not sit and handle it. It broke my pelvis. There was nothing I could do. I was in a big pain. Awhile later, I jumped off the horse to the green grass and the horse ran straight to the stable where I landed badly. We were very close to the house. I got up but I could not move much. And that´s how it all went by......It was a big accident. I was in the hospital for month and took months to recover fully.. I have a metal in my hip bones. It joints the bones. It is doing very good. After the accident I felt really angry and pissed off. I sold all my horses and begin a new journey. That was the time, I realized life is too short. We got to live in the most adventurous way we can. I also got a tattoo that reminds me ´One life Live In´. We do not get a second round.¨

After the accident, Dave had decided to travel the world. He works 4 months and travels 8 months. He loves to travel cheaply no matter which country it is and camp in the beautiful spots. He does not hire porters neither a guide. He carries his own bags and his map is his guide.

¨You are in your 40s. You have a good job, good income, family, good house but are you happy? No, not at all. You got to travel, see the world, see the other side of life, meet other people, learn their culture and language, and more. Having big bank balance does not give the happiness you seek. Knowing the world gives you the happiness you seek in life. Is it not?????¨

Dave travels to England to spent time with his family; 4 children, 11 grandchildren, meet his ex-wife (best friend) and visit the foster home in Canada. ¨The foster home took me when I was in the struggling stage. They helped me get on my feet and showed me the road to life. They are my second parents. I always wanted to thank them But I did not get the time. But after the retirement from the farm I visited them. Every time, I visited them they always welcome me with warm heart just like in the old days. They are really happy and appreciate my comeback to the place. I also work in their hardware store without any expectation.¨

¨How did you meet your ex-wife? Was it love at first sight?¨

We laughed about it. He pulled down his glasses and said, ¨I cannot remember exactly every detail…I was walking down-town. And I saw in the coffee house. I did not go and talk to her. I just enjoyed the moment seeing her. In time, I told her friend about my feelings and that´s how everything started….we got married and have 4 children together…now we are very good friend….whenever I am in England I visit her and her family. She has 2 children with her hubby. We get along really well; she, children and her new husband.¨

¨Was she your first love?¨, I asked in curiosity.

¨Nah…you might have to stop writing and listen to this. Maybe you will remember it better and for long?….Look at this one (Showing me the portrait on his left arm)…She is my true love. She has never cheated on me. We are from the same town in Canada. My first love. I felt in love the moment I saw her. I was 15; young but shy. She was 25. She rode a Harley motorcycle. I always love Harley motorcycles. And she looked so beautiful on that bike. The angel of my life……..¨

¨Did you date her?¨. We both laughed about it. But I was more curious this time. I wanted to hear every little thing I could. I wanted to hear him say,¨Yes I did.¨ But….

¨No. What would a 25 year young beautiful girl do with a 15 year young boy? I have never spoken to her. I loved her. I was madly in love. But I could not say my feelings because I was scared she would say ¨No¨. I did say ¨HI¨ a couple of times. But that´s it. Nothing more. I didn't want her to know anything. Every time, I heard a motorcycle sound I turned my head to see if it was her. In time, my friends knew about it, too. If she had organized a competition in which the winner could date her, I would always be on the first one in the line.¨

¨I had a similar incident back in school. I was in grade seven. My health teacher always treated me differently than anyone else. I do not know what her intentions was. Maybe I was the matured one (Laughing). She would teach 45 minutes and spent the rest 15 minutes with me. Everybody was curious about it. However, she was very clever to handle the situation. She always created a scene like I was in a confusion and she was helping me out. Maybe I was her favorite student and she wanted to show a motherly love (This time we laughed even louder). But honestly, if she did make a move today, I would not stop myself to date her. So how long did it last??¨

¨I think about six months. It was a fantasy but real for 15 year boy.¨, Dave said.

¨Aye, not long enough.¨

¨So one day, I visited a tattoo shop. And, on the whole I saw the love of my life. And without a second thought, I decided to get her inked. And that´s how I have on me. It will always be with me. I will carry her with me till the last breath because I like said she was my first love who never cheated on me.¨

Dave´s English ex-wife does not have a Canadian citizenship. Canadian law states ¨A person must have lived in Canada for three years in order to get a citizenship¨. And she did not make the three years. But they moved often back-forth. Their children has the Canadian citizenship because of their father´s citizenship and because they went to Canadian schools, too.

Dave has inked the memorial dates of his mom, dad and grandson. His mom passed away on 13–02–2015. The Iris flower represents her name. Her name was Iris, too. The date 29–11–2012 was the day his dad passed away and 25–11–2011 was the day he lost his grandson.

The prayer wheel was inked in memory about his time in Nepal the first time. He was in Namche, Solukhumbu, Nepal on 25 April 2015. He considers himself to be the lucky one to be alive. He had seen about four dead bodies on the runway. And broken houses in Namche. He walked around the community and saw the worst. But the interesting part was that, the people had got on their feet and back to normal on their own. He had been airlifted by a non-governmental organization to Kathmandu.

Back home, he walked around the community to raise funds. Sadly, he could not meet his target. He even walked about 1000 km. The funny part was that he walked about 53 km in a day. He felt glad but an older guy walked 63 km a day. ¨We had been advised not to send anyone to Nepal because at that point the government took away the money for some reason. Maybe the money launderers had taken the advantage of the situation. I do not know why, may be this and may be that?¨, he shared.

The other important tattoo are ¨God I trust You, Comino De Santiago¨. He is not a religious person but he likes the art. The ¨God I Trust You¨ began with a hand then Virgin Mary, Jesus, Roses and Cross. This in time became a masterpiece. He liked the concept and so his artist at Ron´s Tattoo Inn., London.

Comino De Santiago reminds about the walk he did in Spain. He walked 1000 km there. He wishes to settle down in Spain later in life. ¨Spain has the perfect weather and place I want; the air, people, nature, oceans, and so on.¨ , Dave said. The yellow arrow states the right direction a pilgrimage is going to.

¨We got the idea about your profession, tattoos, love, marriage, children, travel….What else is missing?….Oh yes, you have got your new masterpiece from artist Kovit? Why did you chose him for this masterpiece?

¨I went to a studio to get a small tattoo in Nepali. They asked me to come the next day. I went like they asked me. But they said they were busy and kept me waiting for such a tiny tattoo. I never got it. Then 4 days ago, I came to Ink´s Inc. Tattoo. I met Kovit first. I told him about my idea. He liked it. And the moment he got my idea he began his work. He asked me to come later in the evening. I came back and he has my design ready already. This was very impressive. I got the first design on my chest. It was very impressive. I shared the news with my family back in England. They all loved the work. I got more impressed with Kovit. At 12:00 in night I messaged him ¨Thank you Kovit. You have done an amazing work. I am really happy.¨ He messaged me back. He was still working on the remaining part of the design. He did not had to do it, but he was doing it. And this was really an impressive. Now you see the difference between the previous studio who made me wait and wait while Kovit worked late night for me.¨

¨I enjoy meeting people. The last time I met a Dutch lady who was totally against getting inked in Nepal. She managed to make the other client not get a tattoo in Nepal. But you love it. The world is full of mixture (Laughing at myself). So how long has the sessions been?¨

¨Today, is the third day. And 2 more left. Kovit will do the last session before the convention. I have changed my dates for my trek to Everest Base Camp for him. It is a masterpiece. I am really happy with the work. He had done an amazing work. I cannot thank him enough. I will come back for the last session from Chitwan in weeks time and in 2018/2019 for another tattoo from Kovit. He is booked in that year for sure. His work and his customer service is really impressive.¨

We had planned for an hour. However, we spent more than 2 hours. We really enjoyed the moment. Dave shared not only about his life experiences but also what I can do in life and should enjoy doing. He is really an inspirational person that I have met. And probably the third person from Canada that I have written about. We greeted each other goodbye after the coffee.
