Mousie’s New and Improved Top 20 Cdramas List

Because why not. These are ordered in terms of being my favorite as opposed to pure quality - if I was trying to be objective, it would probably be rearranged, but I like being petty and subjective.

You will notice that literally every drama on this list is a period drama. Much as I adore period cdramas, contemporary ones rarely work for me.

20. Princess Agents (tie)

Our heroine is a slave in a brutal society who becomes a feared general, fighting for freedom and love of a Yan prince. But her heart might actually lie with a seemingly cold adversary who is madly in love with her (I shipped them so hard!) I was one of five people who loved the infamous cliffhanger ending because it made a brutal kind of sense (You can read the novel if you want a different resolution.)

20. Tribes and Empires (tie)

This one has a hell of an open ending, but it’s so gorgeous and epic, I don’t even care. Set in a fantasy empire, it follows three men - a half-human prince, a cursed son of a general, and an orphaned leader of a barbarian tribe. A feast for the eyes.

19. Ice Fantasy

A visually stunning high fantasy with elves, quests, a shockingly wonderful hero, brotherly love, toughest lady general ever as OTP and basically everything I like.

18. The General and I

The lengthy OTP separation brings its place in this list down, but otherwise a gorgeous romance between two enemies - a general and a female strategist, is a total swoon and so intense.

17. Three Kingdoms 2010

This one is a magnum opus of 100 episodes, with a tour de force performance by Chen Jian Bin as Cao Cao. Battles, politics, and even though it’s very secondary, one of my favorite love stories in cdramas. This one is if you want to use your brain as well as your heart.

16. Colourful Bone

It probably doesn’t deserve to be this high on the list but it hits all my narrative and shippy kinks with a common-sense heroine taking in an abused and mistreated death machine and teaching him to be human. Mmmm.

15. Young Warriors

What do you get when you have seven awesome heroic brothers, a star-studded cast, tragic stories about heroism and love and just amazingness? You get this drama.

14. Strange Hero Yi Zi Mei

Band of misfits fight corruption and uncover mysteries. This one is the most underrated drama on my list. Also, Wallace Huo has never been hotter in his life and that is saying something.

13. The Battle of Changsha

By the same people who wrote Minglan, this follows a family in 1930s China and is a quiet, devastating masterpiece.

12. Prince of Lan Ling

He’s the consummate battle god. She is a mystical shaman. He is fated to be with someone else per prophecy but he doesn’t care and chooses her. True love, politics, battles, jealousy, amazingness, tragedy. I love them so.

11. Gong/Jade Palace Lock Heart

This is Boys over Flowers goes Qing (where Domyoji’s behavior finally makes sense since he’s a literal prince and Rui likes to kill people.) This is such a amazing good fun, about a modern woman time traveling to the time of the fight for the throne between Kangxi’s sons. She thinks she likes the seemingly gentle Four but ends up with hot-blooded, awesome Eight. She herself is tough as all get out and this is pure deliciousness from beginning to end. Yang Mi and Feng Shao Feng had such amazing chemistry, people RPShipped them for years.

10. Return of the Condor Heroes 2006

My first cdrama ever, and what a gorgeous one it was. That’s what got me into cdramas. The childhood eps are pretty awful but after that, it’s pure shippy perfection with an incredible OTP. If you want to be in a constant romantic swoon, in that story of female master and her male disciple and their forbidden love, this one is for you.

9. Eternal Love/Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms

Fated immortal lovers, reincarnations, the whole enchilada. Yang Mi and Mark Chao have insane chemistry that burns up the screen. The first few eps are slow, but it makes up for it afterwards.

8. Legend of Fuyao

A twisty epic romance with a super-powered heroine who is plain awesome and may destroy the world, and a smart, ruthless prince who’s only soft for her. I love it so much!

7. Legend of Condor Heroes 2008

Plot twists, good guy hero with a mega smart OTP, tragic anti-hero who becomes a villain for a while with an amazing OTP, bromance, fights, everything. I just adore this one.

6. Bu Bu Jing Xin/Startling By Each Step

The one that started the time-travel craze (well, that and Gong), about a modern woman who time travels to the time of Emperor Kangxi’s sons’ fight for the throne, this is a gorgeously filmed tragic love story, with one of the most perfectly brutal endings out there. I adore it.

5. Nirvana in Fire

This is a smart story about politics and revenge, where a survivor of a wrongly destroyed family comes to get justice. Seemingly laid back until it explodes. Not much romance but it doesn’t even need it.

4. Rise of the Phoenixes

Like the dramas to destroy you? Come right in. A story about a disfavored prince and a lost daughter of a previous dynasty, this is smart, gorgeous, and is going to wreck you.

3. Ever Night (s1)

I have talked enough about it recently so I won’t say much more, but if you want epic, movie-like quality, characters you will love, amazing battles and cinematography, complicated world-building and an OTP to die for, come right in.

2. The Myth

For the longest time, this was my favorite cdrama, to be replaced only by Minglan. It starts out funny and ends up tearing out your heart. This is the only time in my drama watching experience I cried so hard I threw up. The story is about two accidental time-travelers - a photographer and a cook - who end up in Qin Dynasty China. And from then on it’s about how that cruel, horrifying world takes two perfectly normal men and by wracking their very souls turns one into a hero and the other into a monster. To me, this is Hu Ge’s best performance and as you see his protagonist desperately try to hold on to his humanity and his love in a world that is doing its best to destroy it, I dare you not to cry like a baby. His character is my ultimate cdrama crush.

1. The Story of Minglan

Aaaaaand, my n1. cdrama is the amazing, too short at 73 eps, The Story of Minglan. It is very hard to describe the plot of this - a sort of Elizabeth Gaskell meets period China. It follows three interconnected upper-class families, but more specifically, it is about Shen Minglan, a concubine-born daughter of a minister and Gu Tingye, the oldest, legitimate, and hated by his family son of a Marquess. Their narratives run largely parallel for the first half of the story and such is the genius of this drama that I, the ultimate romance junkie, did not mind that. Minglan is a rarity in dramaworld - she is fiercely smart, very collected and emotionally detached. Life in the troubled Shen household taught her to survive and to hide her feelings and talents. Tingye is a big cdrama love. Abused and reviled by his household where he can do no right (the Marquess hated having to marry his merchant mother for money and has displaced that hate on her son), Tingye manages to keep his warm heart but acquires the ability to go his own way. Both of the protagonists are wonderful and smart and magnetic and rootable for separately, but when they get together, the sparks go off the charts and they become my n1 cdrama OTP of all time. A lot of the story is about family battles, women’s world dilemmas and relationship (of all sorts) interactions. There is also politics and battles, but the true charm of this drama are the mundane details of the world and the fully-fleshed out people who inhabit it. If you watch only one cdrama in your life, make it this one.

no but SERIOUSLY... so glad to have the rest of the team back. They really do make EVERYTHING better. Taichi and Yamato, yeah they’re cool, I love them, but they just don’t carry the show by themselves. And in a similar vein, the rest of the team needs Taichi and Yamato too. Otherwise they have no reason to be all dramatic and show off their cool sides.

(other than Koushirou of course who was just born Cool but it’s the kind of cool most people don’t recognize until you literally own the entire world Koushirou’s three steps from becoming Seto Kaiba except NICE)

ok back to business... last week we left off with the team finally reuniting and bringing Hikari along. For some reason the two groups both decide to stand in a straight line like two baseball teams about to shake hands. Leomon’s team still looks fricking ridiculous

Sooo jury’s out on how Taichi’s gonna react to Hikari! Yamato’s been so chill with having Takeru around, I started to wonder if we’re gonna see super over protective big bro Taichi instead this time! But for the most part he’s just surprised that she’s not surprised by the Digimon.

Hikari is creepy. lol. She’s very much the “cute little sister” type and this episode, at least, we didn’t see any kind of initiative from her, which is to be expected, I mean give the kid some time to adjust. We don’t see a lot of personality though either... I guess we can say she likes cute things, and she’s pretty darn calm... I don’t really like her voice though. It’s a perfectly fine little girl voice, but she always sounds like she’s about to doze off...

The group then basically recaps what’s been happening in the human world recently. Which is all pretty important stuff. But for some reason Taichi and Yamato don’t fill them in on what they’ve gone through?? They have to explain Takeru and Patamon because well there’s a surprise but then they’re like “oh yeah Patamon’s the holy Digimon” and I’m like WHOA. DUDES. IT’S THE HOLY DIGIMON. THE THING Y’ALL RISKED YOUR NECKS FOR. Shouldn’t there be a little more interest, both in the telling and the hearing?? XD

Koushirou’s most excited to update their digivices.

Taichi: Why so blue, Agumon?

Agumon: I shouldn’t have had so many Hawaiian blue energy drinks... but how else did they expect me to fight non stop

Koushirou even has handy dandy charts and images to illustrate. He’s going to get hired somewhere and immediately promoted to CEO, by the CEO.

Patamon: “Hi! I’m the Holy Digimon! Bow before me!”

Jou introduces himself to Takeru and Hikari as the “leader” and tries to convert them to his religion (No-play-only-study-ism) to make them his first acolytes when he inevitably becomes the season’s true final villain. But Gomamon’s all over it.

Gomamon: “You can’t have acolytes until you master maniacal laughter, Jou, didn’t you read ‘Villainy for Dummies’ like I told you to??”

Agumon adorably walks right up to Hikari and asks her if she’s okay and if she feels scared. Hikari says “Agumon’s cute!” Taichi’s face is like “cute? cute?? he’s a dinosaur! dinosaurs are cool!” but he wisely says nothing because you cannot argue with girls about what we think is cute you just cannot

Then Hikari notices something even cuter! Patamon!

Hikari: So cute! I want ten!

Takeru: Sorry, he’s one of a kind and mine!

Hikari: *looks at him* So cute! I want ten!

Takeru: Wait... of me?

Hikari: (u3u)~♥ ﾁｭ

In a nod to the original series, we get a scene of Taichi asking Hikari if she has a Digivice and her being like “oh that thing, I filled it with catnip and gave it to Miko”

Taichi: No digivice! Well I guess this means there’s no way she’s a Chosen Child like us!

Agumon: Infallible logic

Meaning the Zurumon are on the move! this time to FREAKING NASA

Taichi: *most unimpressed voice possible NASA??

I thought hey, it’ll be fine, we’ll just have to fight some more... but

Nasa: *launches a rocket*

Leomon, for some reason, decides now we must part. He doesn’t think these kids can survive this storm and offers to protect them as they escape. The kids are powerful against evil monsters but weak to weather lol. I’m sure the actual logic in no way was “Now that the rest of the team is back from their pointless stint in the human world we no longer need Leomon to play back-up”

They don’t agree without an argument, but Leomon insists, because he believes the Chosen Children have other important things they are meant to do. We get a cool scene of everyone making their escapes. Sora takes Mimi with her

Taichi and Hikari join Koushirou

And Yamato and Takeru “join” Jou (but really Yamato’s the one calling the shots because Jou’s busy struggling not to pee his pants)

It’s just in the nick of time... before a giant whirlpool seemingly sucks Leomon and Eldradimon into the sea.

Taichi: Oh my god did they just DIE??

Kabuterimon: Don’t look back!

Taichi: I know... we have to respect their sacrifice...

Kabuterimon: Well, that and you might be scarred to see Leomon’s reenactment of Ariel at the bottom of Ursula’s whirlpool

Taichi: huh

(look I think I’m funny and that’s what counts)

Getting all split up like this made me think they were gonna end up split up for reals, but the team manages to stay together for now.

They arrive at a new continent covered in weird spikes! Yamato picks up his digivice like a walkie-talkie and says one word: “Taichi”

it amuses me that he could only bring himself to say “Yagami” for a good while in the beginning but then he finally started saying “Taichi” and now he just can’t stop!!

Anyway he’s alerting the others to the fact that some? of the spikes on the island are actually Tortomon about to attack them. Before going to join Greymon’s attack, Taichi flings Hikari at Koushirou “HERE PROTECT MY SISTER SINCE YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO”

jk but seriously... why does Taichi need to be all up in the action? Until now I thought it was something they all had to do to help their partners, because they usually ride on them during battle, but this episode seemed to suggest that Taichi goes out of his way to do it even more than is maybe necessary. Which doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, but xD

Reason #1229345894 why the team is better when they’re all together: Mimi is hilarious and SORA HAS A GOSH DARN PERSONALITY. She DOES, folks. We hardly got to see it recently -____- this episode at least lets her react to the others. Ugggh. Irony of ironies, Sora needs more love.

It’s a stampede! Simba! NOOOOO!

Sooo... the battle with the Tortomon goes pretty well but then this guy called Groundramon or something appears and uh... starts to eat them... like it’s pretty visceral y’all o_o le eugh

Taichi is shocked and recalls last episode when he saw Seadramon power up and evolve after eating Ebidramon. He does not choose to mention the time he was eaten by Devimon. EH IT’LL BE FINE I’M SURE THAT WASN’T IMPORTANT ANYWAY

Greymon: Don’t get eaten.

Garurumon: lol same to you

The Agumon/Gabumon bromance is honestly one of the best things about this season. Not that we get a ton of it, but when we do we do I always feel like “yes, that’s Digimon, that’s it right there”

The Digimon rev up to face off with their cannibal and Groundramon quickly decides Ikakkakumon looks the most nutritious. He probably has lots of blubber and meat on him so I guess I’d go for Ikkakumon first too

Ikkakumon: Don’t eat me!

Jou: Wait don’t! He was teaching me how to be cool!!!

Taichi: Eat him! Eat him Groundramon! I can’t let Jou be the cool one!

Yamato: Are you two fighting to see who can reach peak villain status first?

Taichi/Jou: I’m naturally competitive

ka-boom!

Our heroes are blown back by. Takeru quickly runs to check on his big brother who seems to smack his head on a rock...

Yamato: It’s cool. I’m cool. The definition of cool. Ishida Yamato. That’s me.

Sora: Oh no, I think he’s got a concussion.

Takeru: No, that’s how oniichan is on a normal day.

The team starts to feel overwhelmed! That’s when a fire ignites in Taichi’s eyes and he announces the next siege!

Yamato: Taichi...

no but okay what even IS this moment. The episode goes out of its way to show us Yamato reacting to Taichi not giving up. This is a Thing. I don’t know what he’s feeling here - impressed? Happy that Taichi’s able to bring everyone together when they’re feeling defeated? Or is he also recalling how that same desire to never fail almost got him killed and his partner transformed into an evil evolution a few episodes ago?

So like I keep saying I don’t see why we had to split up the team for so long, and for now I stand by that. But one thing’s clear: the show wanted only Yamato around to witness what happened to Taichi. (I mean, Takeru was there too, but he’s a baby xP) And even Yamato doesn’t know everything - we don’t know how much he was actually conscious for. But I feel like, if there was any point to the separation at all, that was it. I hope so anyway. I like the idea of Yamato grappling with how to know when Taichi’s going too far while at the same time really valuing the way Taichi’s able to push them to victory.

Turns out Taichi’s new plan is... even bigger guns!

Yamato: This is madness.

Taichi: No! This! Is! DIGIMON ADVENTURE:!!!!

Everyone attacks poor Groundramon in the mouth x’D im crying

The combined attacks seem to overload Groundramon and then MetalGreymon launches missiles down his throat, which cause these internal explosions. Uh, gross... like if there’s any time Jou should be puking it’s now

we won by being even more violent than normal! yay us!

Not that this means we get a break because Darknightmon chooses now to make his dramatic return!

They get blown back again

... but I love how adorably protective the big brothers are whenever it happens <3

Yamato and Taichi finally remember they never told the others much about what they’ve been up to recently, other than “we found the holy Digimon.” Now they add “and we found Darknightmon too.” Wow what a level of detail.

I honestly... expected Darknightmon to be interested in Hikari instead of Takeru xP It was a little too predictable so I was glad when he seems to go right for Takeru and Patamon after all.

Patamon, who’s recent hobby has been watching musicals, begins to sing:

Don’t ever kick a dog

because he’s just a pup!

You’d better run for cover

when the pup grows up!

Taichi: Uhh did he not see the part where Gavroche dies??

Yamato: He fell asleep before we got that far.

Angemon!!

Honestly... as a fan of 99 Adventure, Angemon there was SUCH a dramatic thing and... this isn’t. I know, I know, it’s a different show, we do things different in 2020... I just remember the excitement I felt about Angemon’s first apperance though. But, to be fair, although it takes a long time before his second appearance, once it happens Patamon always evolves to Angemon without all the fanfare and it’s just a normal evolution. So... yeah, this all makes sense xP

At least we end on a cliffhanger! What’s gonna happen?? Tune in next week!

So I guess I wasn’t that off about the team splitting up again, I was just wrong about when... next week it looks like they’ll be separated, which, although we just got everyone back together, I’m not upset about as long as each group gets focus. Now that they’re back in the digital world, there’s potential for stuff to happen. But it depends on the groups as well. I do sort of expect this is mainly a “put Taichi and Hikari” on their own maneuver.

Oh, was right about Darknightmon going for Hikari after all xP

My guess is... Angemon’s gonna fight but just not have recovered enough to stay in that form for long, and somehow that results in everyone separating... we’ll see. More importantly...

NANIMON!!!

My relationship with this guy is love-hate! I love to hate him x’D So I’m glad he’s back! Still want to see Piximon and Whamon the most but I’ll take it!

Ten Shipping Questions

Tagged by the lovely @andwebegin! So I guess we’ll see what dirty shipping secrets I keep now?

Ultimate otp: My Fave x Happiness - Look I’ve been in love and fallen out of love with different pairings forever, but my ultimate OTP is when my favorite characters are happy doing what they do and being with who they’re with. Also honestly, I can’t think of a pairing I love more than any other pairing. I do notice a trend though in my OTPs...

Ship you’ll always love: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Marvel - I don’t actually like Steve all that much (which also depends on the comic/movie writer) but I like the idea of Steve more and how he complements Tony. Neither of them are perfect people, but they can be perfect together (if they talk their shit out).

Current obsession: Chu Shu Zhi/Guo Chang Cheng and Shen Wei/Zhao Yun Lan, Guardian - My current obsession is always going to be whatever fandom I just got into, TBH. And I just got into Guardian. I’ve stopped watching the show for now (I stopped around ep 19 only because of lack of time to watch it), but I read the current novel translation on Wattpad and really that keeps me alive, even if the Chu/Guo really only happens in an epilogue so far... But they’re all adorable together and they give me feels currently, so that’s what we’re going with.

Ship you never thought you’d like: Chanyeol/Kyungsoo, EXO - OK I’M CHANSOO TRASH, I’M SORRY. But the only reason why I didn’t think I’d like it is because RPF is kind of a no-go for me out of respect for the actual real people. But at least for me, when I’m reading it and thinking about it, it’s just a fantasy, and that’s an important distinction. Chanyeol and Kyungsoo don’t owe me shit, I’m just a rando on the internet who likes the idea of them bumping uglies because they’re both beautiful boys in a band. (Also when will I get the EXO-CY/DO subunit I’ve been dreaming of, damn it.) Chanyeol and Kyungsoo could reveal they’ve got girlfriends/wives and I wouldn’t be heartbroken over it. But do I find the fact that Chanyeol and Kyungsoo having matching rings to be hot shit? YES I DO.

Ship you liked but don’t anymore: I guess Frame/Book, Make It Right - Really I wasn’t super solid on ANY of the MIR pairings because Fuse is such a shit head to Tee most of the time and FrameBook do NOT have a very proud start to their relationship (which is putting it lightly). Never mind all the other pairings that just HAPPEN with no real justification or build up of relationship other than desperation. In the context of much better built canonical pairings in so many other BL dramas, Frame/Book loses out. But I still have to admit that the last episode of MIR2 where Frame leaves a message to his future self about taking care of Book still makes me feel for them.

Ship that should be canon: Percy Jackson/Jason Grace, Heroes of Olympus - Ok look, I know it’s canon that Percy and Anabeth are meant to be and so are Jason and Piper. Really, I love their dynamics and who’s going to tear Percy and Anabeth apart after they literally walk through the Greek equivalent of hell together. BUT HOLY FUCK YOU GUYS, the amount of casual bromance Rick Riordan throws at you between Percy and Jason is off the charts and if he had decided that Percy and Jason wanted to explore being bisexual together, I would have believed it 1000x more than what he pulled with Nico suddenly being gay for Percy out of NOWHERE. I have OPINIONS on how Nico was suddenly gay ok and how Will Solace, bless his sunny heart, suddenly decides he loves the son of Hades and is going to nurture and love him. I mean I ship it but still.

Canon ship you hate: I struggle to think of a ship I actually hate, so I’ll pass for now.

Pair I’ve been shipping for years: I guess based on the number of bookmarks I have on my AO3 account (which is actually pretty damn young), it’s Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Marvel - Wow, Steve/Tony fics are a whopping 1/3 of my AO3 bookmarks. Guess it’s legit since I’ve managed to accumulate that many.

Ship everyone loves but you don’t: Meh, live and let live. I’m not going to judge unless it’s a really really abusive relationship.

Fav rare pair: Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, Marvel - They’re not exactly a rare pair, plenty of people write and love for the ship, even if they really only interacted once on screen? But I love them so. They are literally my second most bookmarked pairing on AO3.

After writing this, I guess I can come clean and admit that usually my favorite ships are someone competent paired with someone who’s a hot mess. Which makes me wonder if I ever get a boyfriend, am I the competent one or the hot mess

If I hadn’t been made aware that the art book calls him an ikemen type, I would have had no idea he was supposed to be hot. I can see how he is (pretty eyes, a tall blonde, a strong voice) but the circus clothes are pretty bad, braids objectively bad even though I kinda like them in a viking-y way, and the curves in his lips always made me think he looked a bit like a frog or maybe a cat. Doesn’t stop me from drawing sexy art of him tho lol.

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

Good now I can publicly explain why I made him Gryffindor on my recent chart. First of all I think it would be really pigeonholing him to put him in Slytherin. “There are dark wizards in every house” as they say. In Dio ending, he tells Phi and Sigma that he’s like a superhero - and in Japanese, the word he used was “seigi no mikata” aka Ally of Justice, showing that he would view himself the way a Gryffindor does. He’s far more brash than he is ever cunning and he’s ruled by his emotions a lot of the time. It simply looks off since he’s a cultist who’s worshipping a Slytherin. As such, Peter Pettigrew is a really good example of the type of Gryffindor Dio is.

best quality: He’s the most quotable character in the game by a country mile, and his presence in the various routes is just as bombastic. (pun intended.) Dio ending itself is incredibly memorable just for the sheer surprise of his backstory. Who would ever expect that the circus guy dropping F-bombs all the time was a religious nut? Just imagine this guy having a quiet boring church life most of the time and then really cutting loose for his infiltration projects. No wonder he did a swear so many times. He’s hilarious. worst quality: I’m kinkshaming his planet fetish- ok that’s jokey, but do I really have to spell it out? What an asshole. There really isn’t anything that you could say is Low Even For Him, he’ll do it all ship them with: Well the most popular pairing for him is Dio/Luna, which is a pairing that I get and that I accept. It’s not ideal for me though, I’m more inclined to think Luna deserves better. My favorite person to ship Dio with requires some finagling to get around the crossover timelines, but it’s Dio/Mira. They’re about even in terms of being terrible so they’d deserve to put up with each other, they’ve both got connections to Brother which could put them in contact or at least be fun and mysterious, and I know for a fact they’d find each other entertaining. Dio is a lot like Eric but worse (so while this isn’t my opinion necessarily, anyone that thinks Eric deserves better than Mira, this ship could also be for you, I recommend Carlos/Eric as a side for your Dio/Mira) …Meanwhile Dio is attracted to “feisty women” perhaps someone who is like Alice but worse. As a note, I definitely think Dio would be attracted to Alice but also I would never ship Dio/Alice, why would you when Alice/Clover is right there. Plus they have a more direct reason not to bang when he or another Myrmidon may have killed her father, yikes. There are other parallels between them, like making animal metaphors, wearing red and dying of asphyxiation in a pod (like two peas!! Romantic!!!!!!) but this section is already embarrassingly 3x times longer than the others so just trust me that they’re a good match and let’s move on. The direction this ship goes could be all sorts of things depending on how it was set up in the first place… I’d probably be happy with anything? Something like a hatemance would be tasty, though when I RP or draw it, I do tend to make it more positive, piranhas schooling together or whatever. It’s good shipping for if you’re more interested in exploring their villainy than rehabilitation, though I firmly believe they both would be capable of reaching the latter with just eachother as well, it would just take some time and positioning. Maybe copious use of Mira’s willingness to challenge her own beliefs to inspire change in Dio’s zealot approach, or another way, Dio wanting to become better when Mira may not be able to understand his feelings otherwise.

brotp them with: I think Dio just needs to outsource to ZTD entirely because Carlos would be the nice respectful Gryffindor senpai he never knew he wanted. Like I just think way too much of him in this kind of crossover terms because of my main ship for him. However in canon, hmm. Luna would still be very, very good for him even if it wasn’t necessarily romantic. I also see him trying to bro it up with Sigma and I actually have no problem with that. Like Dio, Sigma and Phi all becoming weird friends after Dio tourguided them around the moon in his ending would be highly legit. …I also have this RP bromance of Lenga’s Dio with my 707 from Mystic Messenger that works out because guess who already has life experience with a crazy cultist bro. needs to stay away from: NO ONE. SOONER OR LATER, EVERYBODY PUTS UP WITH DIO. I don’t make the rules

Sherlock Fan Chart (for fun ^_^)

If you could write one canon episode in the series (for any season), give a summary: I made a gifset not long ago that summarized it, in which Sherlock realizes the Final Problem is, in fact, what the show had already established it was ("staying alive"), and it was actually that Sherlock was supposed to figure out how Moriarty survived the fall.

Favorite fanfiction you've read: I don't read a lot of fanfiction, so I couldn't say... I'm sure there are some great ones out there, though.

A sect of the fandom with which you get along well (and why?): Molliarty shippers, not because I ship Molliarty, but because they know their ship isn't really canon, so they're really chill and laid back about everything, just fun and friendly. Keep at it, guys!!

An unpopular opinion on something relating to the show (has to actually be unpopular, not something like "Johnlock should have been canon"): I didn't like any of the female characters much. I liked things about them, but I felt like they were all treated poorly compared to the men. I thought Irene was a flat sex object, Molly was the cliche "voice of reason," and Mary was a sloppy ex-assassin whose presence was kind of pointless because all she did was show up, take over a few episodes, and then die and cause unnecessary drama. The only one I liked more was Janine, because she felt more real, but then Sherlock screwed her over and they got rid of her, so... yeah. Not big on Mofftiss' women. :P

A controversial opinion on something relating to the show (doesn't have to be unpopular): Aside from the mysteries, I think everything really was meant to be taken at face value. I think sometimes the fans' ideas and theories are actually better and more developed than the real writing because there are so many intelligent people in this fandom, so all of that is really fun to analyze. But I also think it's important to respect the writers' real intentions for the show and enjoy it as it was intended.

A character dynamic (romantic or not) that interests you: Sherlock and Moriarty is my favorite dynamic -- all those interesting layers of them being a mirror image of each other; their obsession, their games, their banter, the "I am you" thing -- it's all very fun and exciting.

First impression when you watched the show (and why?): I thought it was weird. Definitely weird. Quirky, big departure from the canon. I thought it felt more like really good fanfiction than a worthy Sherlock remake. But for a finish I grew accustomed to its quirkiness, and I loved the actors, and in the end it became one of my favorite shows of all time.

Something you would change about the show (and why?): I would get rid of filler episodes and bind them all together with one overarching plot and one overarching nemesis.

A character you think needs more appreciation (and why?): Janine. She was the one female character I kind of liked.

A character you think is overrated (and why?): Lestrade. Like... I literally could not care any less about him whatsoever, haha.

A way the show has helped you in your personal life: It's given my family something fun to do together in the evenings. We love discussing the writing together, talking about the good points and bad points, debating characterization, etc.

If you were going to introduce someone to the show by making them watch one scene, which scene would you choose (and why?): We introduced my grandmother by showing her the scene of Moriarty stealing the crown jewels. She thought it was really entertaining. ^_^

Favorite season (and why?): Season 1, because that's when it was still getting its groove and the characters had not become caricatures of themselves; Sherlock was less exaggerated, the mysteries were tighter, and it felt more like a mystery series than a superhero show.

Favorite episode (and why?): “The Reichenbach Fall,” hands down. That's some of the best TV writing and acting I've ever seen in my life. Not to mention the soundtrack, the directing, the cinematography, the producing, the pacing -- just... ugh. So good.

Least favorite episode (and why?): “A Scandal in Belgravia,” because I don’t like Irene and it ultimately didn't really effect the show much in the long run.

Character you most adore (and why?): Moriarty, because I think he's very well written, well acted, and original. It's been years and I'm still just as mesmerized by him.

Character you most despise (and why?): Irene Adler. I dislike her in most versions of the stories. She's only given two main traits: sexy and smart, and then they try to pass her off as a strong woman. Idk, I think she's just sloppy and unoriginal.

Favorite actor: Andrew Scott. I think he and Benedict are the most versatile and talented. Andrew is slighter higher for me because I love his personality.

If you could spend the day with your favorite actor from the show, describe what you would do: I would hang out at a bookstore with Andrew and debate philosophy, religion, politics, and literature with him, and tell him about my writing.

Least favorite actor: Moffat's kid. Very cute, but he really looked nothing like Sherlock and was a distraction to me when he was on screen.

Favorite soundtrack: "Prepared to Do Anything." yeeeeeees

False Alarms (A CS AU) Part 10/?

Modern AU where Emma is a Boston police detective and Killian is firefighter. They both get called to a fire in progress but it ends up being a false alarm, however there can be no denying the sparks between them. Includes fluff and my usual attempts at humor as well as a touch of fake-dating and meddling friends. Inspired by the song ‘False Alarm’ by Motoma and Becky Hill. Rated M for future chapters.

A/N: Hey everyone! So I know I promised that the next chapter would be bringing the wedding, but alas a little thing called the muse got in the way and what I thought would all be one chapter now has to be two. The wedding will be hopefully be posted in about two weeks (I know crappy to wait, but I will be on vacation next week so alas, no writing time). That being said, before we get to the good stuff, there’s one last moment for our two heroes to get through. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy!

“I can’t believe this day is really here,” Ruby said as she and Emma hopped into their undercover car a few hours after they’d clocked in for work and finished up some weeks old paper work. “It’s your last patrol, Detective Nolan. How does it feel?”

“What do you mean it’s my last shift?” Emma scoffed as she put the car in drive and began navigating towards Tiny’s where she and Ruby planned to spend their lunch break in the best way they knew how, with pizza, neighborhood gossip, and a seat by the window on this lovely, mild day. “I’m taking a month off, not absconding from the country and turning in my badge.”

“I meant it’s your last shift as Detective Nolan. Come next week it’ll be Detective Emma Jones.”

The reminder of that impending change hit Emma right in the heartstrings and she couldn’t help the rush of warmth that manifested at the mention of her marrying Killian. To say that she was excited would not be doing this feeling justice. Emma was more than ready to be Killian’s wife and to call him her husband and honestly part of her wished they’d just run off together and eloped, but then the rational part of her knew that not only would she miss the chance for a wedding shared with her family, but her mother might actually kill Emma if she tried to pull a stunt like that.

“Do you think I’ll have to take a new picture for my ID? They probably have the old one on file right?” Emma joked but trying to diffuse the situation and pretend she wasn’t feeling as much as she was but Ruby saw right through that, sending her a smirk as she shook her head.

“I think that man of yours is taking you to two weeks in paradise after the picture perfect wedding your Mom dreamed up. Mix all that happy and the no doubt killer tan you’ll have and you should be so lucky that they let you retake it,” Ruby said, making Emma laugh heartily. After all Ruby was right and there was no point in denying that if everything went to plan (and even if it didn’t) Emma was going to be one happy person when she was finally wed to the man she loved.

“It is going to be pretty perfect, isn’t it?” Emma mused aloud and her friend immediately agreed, proclaiming that if there was one thing the world could count on Emma’s parents for it was protecting this city and going above and beyond for their only daughter’s wedding to a man they approved of.

“Honestly the only way it could be more perfect is if Tiny was catering,” Ruby acknowledged and Emma kind of had to agree. After all there was no better place for pizza in town and it was a regular staple in their lives for a very good reason.

“Speaking of, what’s on the menu today? Let me guess, twinkies and a party pizza, or maybe donut holes and a calzone?”

“Actually, I’m kind of thinking salad,” Ruby tossed back casually.

“So what’s on the menu today? Let me guess, twinkies and a party pizza, or maybe donut holes and a calzone?”

“Actually, I’m kind of thinking salad.”

The immediate reaction to Ruby’s words were to laugh hysterically because after years and years of friendship Emma had never once in her life known her partner to willingly choose vegetables when junk food was an option. It was honestly borderline hilarious to her and her hearty chuckle indicated that, but then Emma noticed that Ruby was actually serious and she was floored.

“I’m sorry, I must be losing it. You, Ruby Lucas, want what you have referred to numerous times as ‘rabbit food’ or worse? This has to be a prank. Where are the hidden cameras?”

“Jeez you make it sound so bad,” Ruby said before shrugging and flipping her hair over her shoulder as she opened the door to Tiny’s. “I’ll have you know I can eat healthy. I’ve just, you know, chosen not to the past twenty some odd years.”

Okay this was just too weird, and as she tried to find an answer for why this was happening, Emma took her partner in completely, studying Ruby maybe harsher than need be but feeling in her gut that there was something bigger at play here. Maybe Ruby was sick or something, or perhaps she’d finally gotten guilted into healthier eating by a doctor, but then a tell popped up when Ruby averted her gaze down for a second and her hand came over her stomach. Suddenly it dawned on Emma – holy shit!

“Oh my God you’re pregnant!” Emma yelled, prompting Ruby to turn an unusual shade of red for her and causing her to shush Emma. “Oh my god I’m going to be an auntie!”

“Jesus, Emma do you have to tell the whole freaking world?” Well it wasn’t a flat out denial, which meant it was totally true, and if the late lunch crowd inside of Tiny’s knew now so be it. This news was too wonderful not to share.

“How long have you known?” Emma asked, not even remotely trying to hide her excitement and joy for both Ruby and Graham.

“Took the test last night,” Ruby admitted and Emma couldn’t resist it anymore, she had to bring her best friend in for a hug.

“Well way to bury the lead, girl. This is wonderful news. We’re excited right?” Emma asked, leaning back and checking in with her friend who was smiling genuinely.

“Yeah, we’re really excited and that’s not the only good news…”

“Ruby Lucas if you tell me you are engaged right now I will lose it,” Emma said, but when Ruby looked caught red handed at her words, Emma knew she was right. “How the hell did you hold out on me so long?! You know how much better paperwork would have been if you’d told me this earlier?”

“I know, I just… I didn’t want to crash your moment.”

“Crash my moment?” Emma asked, really not understanding and Ruby nodded, waving her hand as they walked up to the counter to place their order and then sat back down at their favorite table by the window.

“You know with the wedding and everything. This is your time, Emma, and I know how excited you are. I don’t know I guess I just felt like I didn’t want to take that attention off of you.”

While Ruby was absolutely correct in saying that Emma was excited for the wedding, her logic fell off the rails with the idea that Emma couldn’t be excited for more than one thing at a time. Marrying Killian was going to be magical, of that Emma was more than certain, but hearing that her best friend had found a similar happy ending didn’t create any resentments, it merely bolstered Emma’s already heavily present joy into something all the better. There was surely more than enough happiness to go around, and Emma wanted her partner to understand that.

“Ruby, I love you, but that’s gotta be the crazy baby hormones talking. This wedding isn’t about attention or spotlight. It’s about marrying the guy I love, and nothing aside from that could make me happier than seeing you get the same chance to live the life you want too. ”

“And this is why I love you, Ems. Best best friend ever.” Ruby said sincerely with a laugh though Emma saw tears starting to collate in her eyes and she was shocked. Wow, she’d really hit the nail on the head with those off the charts hormones because Ruby never cried, not even out of joy.

“Okay enough of the sappy stuff. Let’s get to what really matters, like when the heck were you going to tell me and when is this wedding taking place?”

Emma listened then as Ruby promised that she’d been intending to tell Emma sometime soon and then ran down the particulars that she and Graham had discussed. According to Ruby, the two of them weren’t really interested in the whole big white affair (which Emma could understand given how much work went into that) and instead they were hoping to elope in about a month or so when Emma and Killian got back from their honeymoon and could be the witnesses along with Ruby’s Granny.

“Ruby that sounds perfect,” Emma agreed with a smile. “And I’m sure Killian will feel the exact same way. You know how close he and Graham have gotten.”

“Oh I know,” Ruby joked good-naturedly. “The bromance is in full force with those two, and with Will too when he can get his head out of his ass.”

Emma was about to laugh at that not incorrect image when the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She had this strange feeling of foreboding like she was missing something, and that only ever came when a situation was about to springboard. Why she’d be getting that while they were on break at the pizza shop Emma couldn’t imagine but in a split second she knew why.

“All right everybody freeze! One wrong move and I will not hesitate to put you down!” A man in a black ski mask yelled from the front of the shop. He was holding a gun, and looked pretty close to using it as he waved it around at the very few patrons in the shop, coming to make direct eye contact with Emma and Ruby as he did.

The adrenaline spike Emma got in that moment was sharp and swift, but years as a cop had taught her how to channel that fear into results. She had to keep focused on the end game and figure this out. If it was just one guy and they were lucky enough that he’d taken a look at them in plain clothes and didn’t know who they were they could manage this, but then Emma caught the sight of one of Tiny’s cooks being forced over to the counter by another masked man in black that had come from the back of the shop.

“Of course things pops off on your last shift. Typical,” Ruby muttered sarcastically but Emma didn’t spare her friend a glance, not wanting to draw any more attention to them. Instead Emma made sure that the assailant wasn’t looking her way before she pressed the emergency trigger on her belt. That would send an alert to the station that they’d walked into something bad and hopefully get someone the hell over here ASAP since it would be crazy for either Ruby or Emma to reach for their guns when there was a potential hostage situation unfolding.

“All right man, now open up and give us that cash. Put it all in the bag, and no fancy shit. You hit an alert button I start shooting, got it?” The man hounding the frazzled cook asked and the man gave a shaky nod, looking sheet white and ready to hurl all at once. Emma felt for him, but she really hoped this guy could handle this, at least for a few more minutes.

The best case at this point would be these guys finished the robbery and got the hell out of here. If shots were fired things would get bad, and there were ten of them who could be caught in the cross fire including two young kids who were currently cowering in the corner with their Mom and an elderly couple Emma recognized as two regulars named Marie and Charlie. Charlie was a war vet from back in the day Emma knew, and across the restaurant she shared a look with him and he nodded to her, conveying that he would stay put and be with his wife and not play the hero.

Unfortunately though, there were two other guys here Emma didn’t recognize who’d been eating, and while she was hoping they would sit still and not draw attention like any sane person would, one of the guys hands tightened to a fist and Emma could tell he was poised to strike. Clearly he thought he could take this situation on and the reality was he couldn’t, at least not safely. Emma tried her best to make eye contact with him and when she did she shook her head, telling him to cut it out but not knowing if he read her or not.

“Where’s the rest of it?” the man in charge yelled and the cook shook his head as his hands quivered with the drawer now completely cleared out.

“This is it, man. The owner made the weekly deposit yesterday. There’s nothing more to give.”

“It’s not enough!” the masked man yelled, before shoving the cook to the ground and checking out the drawer and the area behind the register for himself. “I thought your guy said this place packs twenty grand easy, J!”

Wow these guys were green if they were giving away information like this on top of hitting a spot without knowing the shop’s schedule. Limited research was a sign of desperation, and the last thing Emma wanted to face was a desperate man with a gun, never mind two of them.

“They do man, but I don’t know nothing about no bank deposit shit,” the guy closest to Emma and Ruby countered, his free hand coming to his head in a nervous gesture. “How much we got?”

“Not even ten large.”

“Fuck,” The guy said, clearly shocked at this stroke of bad luck. “This is not good, Smitty said we need -,”

“I know what Smitty said! You think I don’t know?!” The guy said waving his gun around and making Emma worry. She signaled to everyone else in there to stay low and tucked away, but even that would only do so much.

At the same time Emma and Ruby were left to have a silent conversation of their own, where they managed to get on the same page. Yes they were good shots, and in a contest of who could draw faster no one beat Emma on the whole force, but there were too many civilians here for them to make this a standoff. Without shooting each attacker straight out which would be against protocol, there was very little they could do to ensure the safety of everyone here so they needed to get a message out to patrol. Emma had registered the threat, but they needed details of what they’d be walking into. Pulling out for a text was too much, but Ruby, with the utmost care to be discrete slipped her phone from her pocket, dialing the station’s emergency line directly and then letting the phone pick up on their surroundings.

“Well what the hell do we do man? Is there another spot we can hold up?” the following assailant asked.

“No there’s not another spot, genius! This is it! We gotta get that money one way or another.”

Through the glass Emma could see multiple under cover cars and cops at the ready, telling her that as long as she could get these guys out of here, the immediate threat could be handled. As long as they were in here though there were too many pitfalls and too many civilians in the line of fire to take the risk of striking back. This meant the only thing Emma could do was try and reason with them to get them the hell out.

“Look man,” Emma said as she got up from her chair, immediately drawing both men’s gazes and their aimed guns but focusing primarily on the weaker link in this job who happened to be closer to her. “The longer you two are here the greater your chance of getting caught. If you shoot someone or something, you’re leaving a trace that could get back to you and the longer you stand here the greater the risk someone from outside will see something. So the smart move is to just take the money and get out of here.”

“And how the hell would you know that?” The leading guy asked.

“I love Law and Order,” Emma replied automatically pulling a snort from Ruby, which unfortunately the guys heard.

“You got something to say, lady?” the guy asked Ruby, waving his gun her way. “Or is it just the blonde who thinks she’s so smart?”

“No I’m pretty much with her on this. That show doesn’t lie,” Ruby said, somehow managing to still bring some sass while appeasing the man’s bruised ego. It was a fascinating tight rope Ruby walked, and Emma knew only her partner could pull that kind of move off, but just as Emma thought they had these guys got, one of the guys from behind the counter blew everything.

“Listen to them man, they’re cops.”

Oh fuck! Emma thought to herself, knowing that was the final trigger this guy would need. He was clearly unhinged whether from nerves or fear or something darker and knowing they were cops was the final straw, plunging him into a full blown rage and panic that was by definition the shit hitting the fan.

“Shit you’re cops?!” the guy yelled, his gun raising towards Ruby again, and the next thing Emma knew instinct took over. She’d seen enough situations go south to know what was coming, and this guy was far enough over the limit of stress and crazy that he’d pull that trigger, taking out her best friend in the process.

Shoving Ruby out of the way and down to the ground was a split second decision, and she was already in motion when the bang of the shot sounded out. It cut through the parlor and pulled a scream from one of the kids, but that scream didn’t last long, at least not for Emma because it was soon drowned out by two other gunshots and the sharp searing sting of Emma’s being hit.

The space of time where the impact of the bullet gripped at her abdomen stole the breath from Emma’s lungs and blurred the lines of time. She couldn’t take in what else was happening and her thoughts were scrambled, caught between making sure Ruby was okay, making sure the perps didn’t hurt anyone else, and thinking that oh shit, she might have just been really hurt. She was hit, she was hit and as she realized an image flashed into her mind of Killian and the real fear set in for just a second that her choice to be heroic would take her from him.

“Emma!” Ruby yelled, cutting through the barrage of sound and swirling chaos in Emma’s mind, and then Ruby was looking at her, pulling at her jacket and then looking with relief that signaled to Emma even in her pain confused brain that it was okay. If Ruby had that face it had to be all right, it just really didn’t feel that way at the moment.

“It got your vest, Ems. You’re all right. Thank God you’re all right.”

Emma nodded remembering for the first time in all of that that she was outfitted for this worst-case situation. When she’d jumped into action she hadn’t thought twice about the vest but now she was more thankful for it than she could even process. Her instincts told her to walk this off or try to push through this now that she knew it was the vest, but Ruby was having none of it, requiring that Emma stay down and telling her that the perps were down and the situation was diffused. An ambulance was on the way, and they had to wait, because even if the vest had caught the worst part of that bullet, this pain was real and there was still potential damage.

“You got lucky, detective,” the EMT said to Emma when she was finally sitting up in the back of the ambulance minutes later being treated on their way to the hospital. Her vest had been removed for evidence and the sight of her injury was now exposed with her pulled up to reveal the already rapidly bruising point of impact. “A few inches over and this would have been a hell of a lot worse.”

“Don’t let my fiancé hear you say that. He’s probably going to have a heart attack as is,” Emma said before turning to Ruby with actual fear returning. “Shit, did you use my name on the radio call? Does everyone know?”

“Oh they know,” the EMT replied before Ruby could. “The Police Commissioner’s daughter gets shot… that kind of thing doesn’t fly under the radar.”

“Oh God,” Emma groaned, moving to put her arm over her eyes and wincing at the pull it had on her aching, pained muscles. God this injury was going to get old quick, and yet she had to deal with it and also deal with her freaked out parents and an understandably worried Killian. “Ruby you told him I’m okay, right? He has to know I’m okay.”

“He knows,” Ruby confirmed. “I called your Mom before we even left the scene. They’re meeting us at Mass Gen.”

“Good,” Emma said, surprising herself with the sentiment. Two seconds ago she’d been frustrated that they would all be bothered by this when it wasn’t a true emergency, but now she was relieved. All she wanted right now after that scary as shit moment was to see the people she loved, and them meeting her at the hospital would guaranteed that happening.

Emma expected some kind of witty reply or a teasing joke to cut the tension from Ruby, but none came and that caused some alarm for Emma. It was enough to make her look past the EMT and back to her friend who Emma was just noticing was very pale and looking even shakier than Emma herself felt.

“Ruby are you okay?” Emma asked and Ruby shook her head, looking like she was still in shock, but Emma waited her out, not giving up until Ruby admitted what was wrong.

“I don’t know whether to thank you for saving my life or scream at you for being so reckless, Emma. You could have been killed by a bullet meant for me.”

“Ruby you’re my partner, not to mention my best friend. I saw the chance to save you and I took it. I don’t regret that and look it turned out okay, right? I’m fine. This is nothing.”

“It’s not nothing, Emma. I heard you, you know,” Ruby said, tears forming in her eyes when Emma was so far from used to seeing them on her friend’s usually happy face. “When you fell to the floor you said Killian’s name. You knew as soon as you got hit what you might be losing.”

Emma didn’t remember saying anything aloud, but Killian had been on her mind yes, and in the flash of a moment where she’d believed she might be really hurt she’d been clinging to that image of the wedding they were heading towards and the future they were going to have. She’d been determined to live through whatever would come because she was never going to give him up, but that didn’t mean Ruby should feel guilty. It just put into perspective some things for Emma about what she wanted and what she might be willing to do for this job down the line.

“But I didn’t, Ruby, and maybe it was my imagination, but the way he was aiming that gun at you… I think you would have been hit a lot worse than I was.”

Emma heard Ruby mumble that she was probably right, but her friend seemed unconvinced. Yet whether she noticed it or not, Ruby’s hand went over her still flat stomach and Emma remembered just how much more was at stake in all of this than they realized. Not even twenty minutes ago Ruby had been confessing her good news to Emma, and that had all been over shadowed by a call too close to be even remotely comfortable.

“Remember that talk we used to joke was never coming?” Emma prompted, alluding to the moments the two of them had had on patrols over the years where they said they’d never go the desk and paperwork route or transfer to less intensive task forces. Once upon a time that career choice had seemed like a death sentence, but now, at least in the midst of today’s negative aftershocks, it didn’t seem so terrible at all. In fact it felt like the best choice given the fact that both Emma and Ruby were starting lives where they had so many more people to care about and so much more to potentially lose.

“Yeah,” Ruby said expelling a shaky breath. “We might have been wrong about that one.”

“Eh, it’s all good,” Emma joked. “We’ve been wrong before, we’ll be wrong again.”

“Maybe,” Ruby agreed, lightening up enough to smile a bit. “But you can be damn sure that you’re ass is never getting shot again Emma Nolan. I can freaking promise you that.”

“Sounds good friend,” Emma agreed, taking Ruby’s hand in hers. “Sounds really, really good.”

…………..

There would never come a time in Killian’s life when he enjoyed the minute details of wedding planning. Maybe that was wrong of him, and maybe he should be more involved in what color schemes were chosen or flatware selected, but at the prospect of all these choices, Killian felt just how unimportant it was in the long run. What mattered wasn’t that his groomsmen would wear navy or charcoal or that the china patterns were floral or stately. All that mattered to Killian was that in a week’s time he would be marrying the best woman in the world and the one he’d been lucky enough to be loved by in return.

That being said, however, Killian was hardly in a position to deny the usual fanfare of a wedding, and with his future mother-in-law calling the shots, Killian knew better than to resist. Doing so would only cause unnecessary conflict with a woman who’d be in his life forever, and worse his lack of choice would only make for more work for Emma who didn’t need the headaches caused by debates on the merits of lilac or lavender shades.

“How a person can dedicate so much energy to napkin wares I will never know,” Liam muttered as he saddled up to where Killian had taken up across the ballroom from the rest of the organizing. This was only supposed to be a temporary break so as to clear his mind from some of these frivolities, but Killian should have known his elder brother would follow him.

Honestly Killian was rather surprised that Liam hadn’t just suggested ditching all of this and leaving Emma’s parents and a happily situated Elsa to bounce ideas off of each other, but then again Liam had been adamant since finding out about Elsa’s pregnancy to never be far from his wife. It was a protective instinct that Killian understood but didn’t have the chance to actively partake in, for where Elsa and Liam worked together at the State’s Attorney’s office, Killian and Emma were in separate forces all together. Much as he might like to be out there with her while she was on patrol, Killian knew it would be for nothing. He didn’t have the proper training, and Emma was damn well capable of handling herself on her own.

“As long as Emma’s happy and we’re married, they can have every kind of bloody napkin in the city,” Killian acquiesced and Liam chuckled at that before slapping his hand on Killian’s shoulder.

“Not to worry brother, a wedding will come. You might be completely gone over this woman, but I’m happy to report she’s just as tied up in you.”

Damn right she is, Killian thought to himself as he grinned, feeling a lot lighter already than he had throughout this morning’s rather last minute planning.

“Your brother’s not wrong,” Chief Nolan said as he approached from the other surprise. “Emma’s just as ready for this wedding to come as you seem to be. You should have seen the look she gave her mother when Mary Margaret hinted at needing another week to get things perfect.”

“She really wanted to wait another week?” Killian asked, shocked given how many things were locked in and how many deposits had been paid months back but then David chuckled and shook his head.

“Hardly. She just wanted to get a little rise out of Emma, and she was nothing if not successful.”

“I don’t doubt it,” Liam replied with a laugh, cementing the moment as a positive one of two families coming together in a way Killian had never expected, but too soon it was broken by something that caught his attention. An alert that Killian recognized from Emma’s emergency calls sounded across the way, and then Killian saw his soon to be mother-on-law’s reaction and he knew, he just knew that this was serious and that it had to do with Emma.

“Oh God,” Mary Margaret murmured, but by the time she looked up both Killian and David were already in motion towards her. Only when she conveyed the information, Killian couldn’t comprehend it at all.

There was an incident. Emma and Ruby were on break at their favorite spot, a place Killian and Emma had been many times when their free hours coincided, when two assailants came in armed and looking to rob the place. Somehow things had gone south and there was an officer injured at the scene. That officer was Emma, and they didn’t have any more information than that an ambulance was en route.

“We have to go,” Killian said and thankfully there was no pushback as he said it. Instead Emma’s parents were right there with him, rushing to the car without any more delay.

“Killian, if it’s too much…” Mary Margaret began to offer as they got to the car, signaling at his driving, but it wasn’t. He could be cool under pressure. He’d get them to Emma wherever she may be and rise above this. What they needed was Emma’s mother monitoring the updates so they knew things as they happened.

“No, ma’am. I can do this. Just tell me where to go.”

“They’ll take her to Mass General because that’s the closest place. Head there now, we can probably get there straight away.”

Killian heeded the order from Emma’s mother, and took every indication from the Chief about which routes to take to avoid the traffic. While that was happening more updates came in, the most important being that the shot, while still damaging, had hit Emma’s protective vest. She was awake and responsive, bruised and battered, but given what could have happened and what Killian had been fretting over the past few minutes that felt like years, it was so much better than he’d been preparing himself before.

That didn’t ease the ache inside of him that remained for the torturous fifteen minutes that they were driving though, and though his brain rationally knew that Emma would be okay, he was still wracked with that lingering spike of almost crazed worrying. He needed proof that Emma was truly okay, and it wasn’t until he saw her there in the private ER bed fully conscious and sitting up that Killian felt any kind of relief. She was alive and alert and their time together wasn’t over before it even really got the chance to begin as his heart had fretted when they first got the call.

“You’re here,” Emma whispered when she saw him, her eyes softening and some of her own anxieties melting before Killian’s eyes as she looked at him and then glanced to her parents.

“Of course we are, Emma,” her mother responded as she came to take Emma’s other hand after giving Ruby a hug quickly. “We’re just so glad you’re all right honey.”

“That we are, love,” Killian agreed as he pressed a kiss to her temple and felt Emma lean into that bit of affection.

But before any more could be said or questions on specifics asked for, the doctors were there, bringing their expertise and saying that while Emma had some considerable bruising, they weren’t seeing signs of breaks or fractures anywhere. In short she’d been damn lucky and gotten off about as easy as a person who was shot could get, but even that comforting bit of intel didn’t change the need that Killian felt to keep his future wife’s hand in his and to stay right by her side in every moment that was possible. Emma, for her part, didn’t seem to mind either, and funnily enough there were moments when she seemed to forget she was the patient and she tried to make him feel better instead.

“It’s fine, Killian, really. I mean I know I got lucky, but I’m okay, and they got the guys who did it so there’s nothing left to worry about.”

Maybe for a man who loved less that would be true, but Killian knew as logical as Emma’s words were he’d never adhere to them. He was completely and utterly gone over this woman and no matter what her line of work or what her path in life was he’d want to protect her. He felt that need deep down in his soul like his place was beside her caring for her as she cared for him and being her partner. The thing was at work she had another partner, someone who Killian did trust just as much as Emma did, but that lack of control and that distance from the moments that might put Emma at the most risk had always and would always scare Killian more than anything else.

“Well I wouldn’t go that far,” her father clarified, putting in words much of what Killian was thinking. “There will always be worry about losing you, Emma. You matter too much to all of us to let that go.”

Killian felt that claim all too keenly, and the tightness in his throat and surging emotion he was reeling from told him that. The truth was though that Emma had chosen a profession and in turn a life where this was a risk. She was on the front lines of danger, even if this fluke of an incident hadn’t actually been sparked by her being on patrol, and that wasn’t going to change, not as long as she was a detective out in the field. That was a hard thing to accept too especially when Killian felt so bonded to Emma that the thought of losing her was too unbearable to linger on, but at the end of the day this was who Emma was. She loved her job, she felt an undeniable passion for helping people in the way she knew how, and Killian would never make her choose a safer path, not when he understood that drive and need to be on those frontlines just in a slightly different way.

“I know,” Emma acquiesced, looking over to her father as she did before offering an attempt at a smile, and deflecting a little from her current situation by prompting Ruby to distract everyone with some better news.

Killian wasn’t really sure what Ruby could possibly say to bring light into this situation, but when Ruby told them all that she and Graham were getting married and there was a baby on the way, he was happy for them, even as he was still caught up in all these feelings about Emma. Killian only had so much capacity for celebration right now, and though he wished he might be strong enough to rally and be totally fine, he was still stuck in the flux of all that had happened. He congratulated Ruby and Graham when he arrived minutes later of course, but there was still an edge underneath it all that kept Killian from feeling the joy for their friends as much as he might like, and though he seemed to be flying under the radar on that from the others, his Emma knew something was amiss.

“I vote that we never have another day like this,” Emma said softly and Killian sighed, running his thumb along her knuckles gently.

“I do as well, love, but with the lives we’ve chosen we run the risk of this not being a one time thing.”

“I’m sorry, Killian,” Emma whispered and he searched her face for a reason. This wasn’t her fault, so why would she apologize? But then she filled in the blanks of her statement and he understood. “I didn’t ever want you to have to face a close call like this, not after what I felt when you saved Gus. That feeling… it’s the worst feeling in the whole world.”

Yes, it was. Emma was not wrong in that regard, and that reality was something that had been bearing down on Killian even before this mishap. He’d carried the memory of that night when Emma came to him after his close call with him always, and he’d been grappling for months about what his future with the force would look like. He loved the men and women he worked with, and he felt the impact of what they were all doing so strongly. They made a difference and saved lives but it came at a cost, and now that he had Emma, it was a cost Killian never wanted to pay.

All he wanted was to marry this woman, get started on that family the two of them had been dreaming of, and find a way to combine his love of the firehouse and his crew with a slightly safer track. The adrenaline rush did nothing for him anymore, and it was a false high of sorts when compared to what he’d found with Emma, so right here, in this moment, Killian made a silent vow that he’d find compromise. He would put in for a transfer or a new line of command that was less in the direct path of danger, but just because Killian might be ready for a sojourn from the front lines didn’t mean Emma was, and it didn’t mean Killian would try and influence her to get to the same page as him much as he might like to.

“I knew from the start that you were a woman capable of greatness love, and part of that greatness is that you’re willing to give all of yourself to protect and serve. Scary as that might be at times when the chips are down, it’s honorable, and it’s one of the many things I love about you. I’d never resent those choices, Emma, because they’re part of who you are.”

Not for the first time since he’d first entered the room tears entered Emma’s eyes, and the sight of them tugged at something in Killian. He hated to see her upset at all, but these tears signaled something different from pain or remorse. In speaking the truth, he’d said what Emma needed to hear most, and by doing so he’d set them both free in a way from the worries of their day.

“Marry me,” Emma whispered and Killian laughed for the first time since all of this had happened, feeling so much of that pent up emotion seeping out as he did and he brought her hand that he was holding up to kiss gently, his lips lingering just a touch longer than might have been polite.

“Already happening, love,” he promised, vowing there and then that no matter what may come they would be man and wife and he would make sure to bring Emma the kind of life a woman like her deserved.

“No, I mean tomorrow. Marry me tomorrow, Killian. I don’t want to wait another day to be married to you. I don’t think I can bear it.”

Killian was struck with surprise at her request, but immediately his instincts told him that’s what he wanted to. He never considered it a possibility, not when so much felt set in stone for their impending nuptials, from the venue to the food to the bloody cake, but he would make it all work for Emma. No matter what mountains needed moving or battles would be fought to get her her heart’s desire, Killian would face them all and make them both happy in the process.

“As you wish, love.”

The two of them shared a kiss then, mostly disregarding the fact that the room was still filled with family and friends and nurses. It wasn’t swift by any means but sincere and sweet, an unspoken proclamation of love between the two of them and the loveliest kind of relief after this difficult day they’d faced.

“Mom,” Emma called out when she and Killian had pulled away from each other. “I know you have everything planned, and I know it’s going to be beautiful, but…”

“But you don’t want to wait to get your happy ending,” her mother replied as if she totally understood, and Killian watched as Mary Margaret took David’s hand in hers and shared a look of love with her husband before turning back to Emma. “Don’t you worry, Emma. I’ll take care of everything and it will still be the single best wedding this city’s ever seen. How does sunset tomorrow sound to you?”

“It sounds perfect,” Emma said, her eyes never leaving Killian’s as she did and her smile invigorating him in a way that no other remedy the world over could provide. “I guess this means we’ve got work to do.”

“Oh no, there is no we Ems,” Ruby said. “You’ve been through more than enough today. What you two need is to get your love-sick butts home.”

Emma laughed at the ridiculous label Ruby had given them and Killian couldn’t help but grin either. After all love-sick wasn’t so far off. He was totally consumed with his feelings for Emma, he just happened to find the sensation to be the most pleasurable of things and not an ailment of any kind.

“Are you sure?” Emma asked, feigning concern for the rest of them where Killian could see she was actually fine with that idea. She was putting on a façade to offer, but underneath that she was weary from the day, and like him, likely ready to be home and done with all of this.

“We’re sure, princess. We’ve got this,” David said as he came to press a kiss to her forehead. Then he stood up straight and nodded to Killian before tossing him a command. “You take care of my girl. Got that Jones?”

“Yes, sir,” Killian replied, knowing he’d do right by the request no matter what and watching as the others took their leave to plan that sudden ceremony after bestowing all their love and affection on Emma.

“So if we’re going home… I guess that means we’re breaking with tradition. So much for that night apart my mother wanted,” Emma said, pulling a growled out sound of disdain from Killian that made her smile even brighter.

“We were never abiding by that particular set of superstition, love. I was just letting your parents believe that we would to appease their more old-fashioned sensibilities.”

“Oh really?” Emma asked, now highly amused. “And what, you were going to scale to the second floor of my parents house and sneak into my childhood bedroom like it was no big deal?”

“If that’s what it took, yes,” Killian said, totally serious. “You should know by now that there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you, Emma, and much as you might like to tease me I know you didn’t want that night apart either.”

Emma’s green eyes deepened in their color then, telling Killian everything he need to know. He was right, after all, and though it might feel unbelievable that he’d been so lucky as to make Emma fall in love with him as he was with her, that was their reality. All he had to do to know her heart’s desires was look inward, for they were in this together and in sync in a way that only came with a true and enduring love.

“So is that what tonight’s going to be all about… giving me what I want?” Emma asked her voice dipping lower and that so perfectly familiar heat flaring back to life between them full force. How she could be this damn tempting while injured Killian couldn’t know, but he’d have to resist for a while until he knew his lovely wife was truly all right and he wouldn’t hurt her in any way.

“As long as what you want coincides with what you need, love, it’s yours. I’d give you the world as long as I could still keep you safe.”

“I love you,” Emma whispered and Killian smiled before making the same vow back. And when the doctor’s discharged Emma an hour later saying she might be tender for a few days but could go about her business regularly, Killian made good on his promises of giving Emma everything she wanted and gratifying them both immensely in the process.

Post-Note: So thank you guys so much for bearing with me in this last chapter before the wedding. I know I thought I was going right towards the wedding but I knew I wanted to mirror Killian’s close call with one for Emma too. Originally I thought I could articulate that in a smaller portion and then have the second half of this chapter be the wedding, but that just wasn’t going to happen. Anyway I promise that when I do finally get back from the vacation I’ll be taking next week I will bring all the fluff and cuteness to this wedding. I always love writing some CS vows and this will be no exception. Thank you all so much for reading and hope you have a great rest of your day!

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #108 - The Road to El Dorado

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: No.

Format: DVD

1) Not only is this one of my favorite animated movies, it is one of my favorite movies period. I found it while scrolling through Cartoon Network or HBO Family or something and watched it every chance I could get. 12 year old me found it very edgy. The mild swearing, the cigars, the blasphemy, all of it was very enticing and that’s fed my love of the film since.

2) Elton John & Tim Rice, the songwriting duo behind The Lion King, re-teamed for this film and churned out a nice set of songs. But the strange thing is if you listen to the soundtrack most of the songs are recorded differently than how they appear in the film. The one exception I think is "Someday Out of the Blue” which plays during the end credits. Still, they songs add the fun and energetic flavor to the film. The opening song in particular, “El Dorado,” does a nice job of setting up the mythology we need to get the movie started in a very short amount of time.

3) If you’re a fan of voice over work, you’ll recognize Jim Cummings as Cortez.

Cummings is one of the most prolific and talented voice over artists out there. It would be impossible to list everything he’s done, but his most notable work has been as Darkwing Duck, Winnie the Pooh & Tigger too, Hondo on "Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, Razoul in Aladdin, and Ray the firefly in The Princess and the Frog. It’s fun knowing what he sounds like because not only do you hear him in Cortez, but you also pick up the random nameless characters he plays too with his different voices.

4) The heart of the film, the thing that makes it great: Miguel & Tulio.

The bromance between Miguel & Tulio is what makes this film work as well as it does, it’s what makes it fun! Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline voice the pair respectively, and their chemistry is off the charts. It doesn’t hurt that the pair actually got to record their performances with each other, a rarity in animation (although Pixar has done it with Monsters Inc for John Goodman and Billy Crystal).

Their relationship and roles are clear from the start, they balance each other out. Tulio is mildly selfish with a great hunger for gold and an ability to think things through. Miguel’s heart is bigger than their brain, being the dreamer/softie of the group (wanting the map to El Dorado, saving Altivo the horse when he almost drowns, etc.). And they play off each other beautifully.

5) 12 year old me was very fascinated with the slight profanities this film had.

Tulio [when he’s about to roll his dice]: “Come on baby, papa needs that crappy map.”

I thought crap was a real swear when I was twelve. I didn’t lose my innocence until thirteen.

6) Chekov’s Fake Fight.

The fight comes into play later in the film too, but is a showcase mainly for the wonderful banter between Miguel & Tulio and - therefore - the excellent writing of screenwriters of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. These guys were my favorite screenwriters when I was twelve, and can you blame me? Their resume consisted of: Aladdin, The Mask of Zorro, Shrek, The Road to El Dorado, every Pirates of the Caribbean film, Treasure Planet, and both National Treasure films. They have a strong penchant for strong dialogue too. Consider the exchange above, and also this:

Miguel: “You fight like my sister.”

Tulio: “I’ve FOUGHT your sister! That’s a compliment!”

I love that.

7) According to IMDb:

The film shares several attributes of its namesake, the "Road" comedies made famous by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby during the 1940s (which helps explain anachronisms such as shared language, pop culture references and lack of historical accuracy).

I just thought that was a fun share.

8) God, I love the banter between these two.

[Tulio & Miguel jump into barrels of water in a chase scene but can’t escape because the barrels are being loaded onto a ship]

Tulio: “What’s happening here?”

Miguel: “We’re both in barrels. That’s the extent of my knowledge.”

9) Even the bad guys have great dialogue!

Cortes (upon discovering Miguel & Tulio on his ship): “My crew was as carefully chosen as the disciples of Christ.”

10) I’m just going to let you know now, so many of my notes here are just quotes from the film I love.

Miguel [giddily, after Cortes tell the pair they will be enslaved in Cuba for being stow aways]: “Alright! Cuba!”

11) For example, another quote:

Miguel: Yes, that's it Altivo. Find the pry bar!

Tulio: Yes, "find the pry bar". He doesn't understand "pry bar"! He's a dumb horse, there's no way he could understand...

[Altivo drops keys into the brig]

Tulio: Well... it's NOT a pry bar.

12) The Trail We Blaze

Animated films are usually short so as to be not too time consuming. It can take years to make 80 minutes of animation. This film has a nice device of compacting what could be very long scenes into neat little montages with the use of a song. We still get Tulio & Miguel’s fun journey through the jungles to find El Dorado, but it’s done in three and a half minutes to a fun Elton John tune. It keep the energy, the adventure, but doesn’t waste the time of the animators or the audience.

13) Immediately Tulio and Chel have great chemistry as they play “pass the golden idol” together!

Immediately upon entering the city the audience is filled with a sense of wonder, achieved through gorgeous animation and also Hans Zimmer’s subtle music which adds for extra bone tingling. You marvel at it with Tulio and Miguel, and you understand how it is such a mythical place.

15) Edward James Olmos does some great voice over work as Chief Tannabok.

I’ve never seen “Battlestar Galactica” so I am mostly familiar with Olmos from his work in Blade Runner, Stand & Deliver, and even “Agents of SHIELD”. I think he shows off a nice amount of range with this addition to his resume. Chief Tannabok is not an angry man. He is kind, soft, gentle, patient, but also you can tell that he’s kinda sad. You don’t HEAR Olmos, you hear the chief and that makes him an excellent addition to the cast.

16) And of course our big bad, Tzekel-Kan

Tzekel-Kan is the opposite of Chief Tannabok. He is angry, an overlord of sorts. He wants blood because he believes it is what’s needed. He believes people are wicked and evil just for enjoying life and being kind, and it is his righteous duty to smite them. He pisses me off way more now than he did when I was twelve.

17) This whole bit with the volcano! Miguel goes too far and says that the gods should not be questioned or else they will be forced to release their awful wrath...but Tzekel-Kan wants to see that. Only they’re not gods! So he and Tulio turn away to try and figure it out and we get this...

There’s an old addage in writing: “A coincidence to get a character out of trouble is lazy.” However in this case I’m 100% okay with that because it’s just funny as hell.

18) How many of us have used this GIF?

19) Chel.

Chel is a nice way of making the duo a trio. Voiced wonderfully by Rosie Perez, she is just as crafty and cunning as Tulio (if not more so) but also understand Miguel’s sense of adventure. The pair balance each other out already, bit if Miguel acts too dreamer-y or Tulio is too gold hungry they throw each other out of whack (as this film shows). Chel helps stabilize them by film’s end and is a lot of fun to watch. Also, bonus points for being an animated female character with a body that is physically possible.

Chel [on why she wants a life of adventure]: “You’ve got your reasons...and I’ve got mine. Let’s not make this personal, okay?”

WHAT ARE HER REASONS!?!? WE NEVER LEARN!!! I MUST KNOW!!!

21) So Chel needs to prove to Tulio and Miguel she’s a good con artist...

[Chel shows the pair the dice she stole from Tulio]

Tulio: “How did you get those?”

Miguel: “Where was she keeping them?”

I’m with Miguel, that’s the more important question.

22) Oh Miguel...

23) It’s Tough to be a God.

The only time this film is a traditional musical (ie: the characters themselves break into song & dance), and considering Kevin Kline’s and Kenneth Branagh’s singing here that might not be the worst thing. The interesting thing is that their version doesn’t even appear on the soundtrack. Instead we get a duet with Elton John and Randy Newman.

24) I need to remember this excuse.

Tulio [trying to convince Tzekel-Kan not to make a human sacrifice to the gods/them]: “The stars are not in position for this tribute.”

Miguel: “Like he said...”

25) I don’t identify totally with Miguel or totally with Tulio, but with parts of them. Like I identify with Tulio being kind of the dreamer who thinks things are possible, but this is a very me thing to say:

Tulio [after Miguel tells him he worries too much]: “No, I worry just the right amount! You can never worry too much!”

Same, Tulio. Same.

26) Remember how I said this movie was edgy to 12 year old me. Well it features a scene where Chel tries to seduce Tulio. Like, more than wanting a kiss. But like she shows off her shoulders for a back massage, they’re later found on the ground together all disheveled, it’s not even very subtle when you know what’s going on. Twelve year old me was very innocent.

27) I love their banter.

Miguel [when he and Tulio end up in a big arena to play ball for the locals]: “Well don’t blame me!”

28) The ball game is a lot of fun to watch, if for no other reason then Chel on the sidelines.

Chel: “Foul! That was a foul!”

And then it’s her idea to use the armadillo as a ball replacement to cheat.

29) So earlier in the film we got this line from Miguel:

And then later in the film Miguel tries to convince Chief Tannabok that the boat they are using to leave isn’t good enough (because Miguel wants to stay) when in fact it’s perfect. When Miguel admits his mistake, we got this line from the chief.

Chief: “Hey, to err is human.”

Miguel goes to get in the boat, but then he looks over his shoulder at the chief and the chief looks at him knowingly. And they don’t say anything else about it.

I love that. I love that the chief isn’t an idiot, but he knows. He knows and he knows it’s good for his people and he knows Miguel is a good guy and...I just love it!

30) I love little things like this.

[A giant stone jaguar, controlled by Tzekel-Kan, attacks the city. It grabs a warrior, ruffs him up A LOT, then lets him fall to the ground.]

Warrior [patting himself down]: “I’m okay!!!”

[Jaguar steps on warrior]

Warrior [from under Jaguar’s foot]: “I’m still okay!”

31) Remember how I talked about Chekov’s Fake Fight?

Tzekel-Kan [when he was Miguel & Tulio cornered]: “I know what you are and I know what you are not. And you are not GODS!”

Tulio [after a beat]: “Y-you’re not a god!?”

The pair then continue to have a very real argument where they say some pretty cold things to each other...

Tulio: “You’re buying your own con!”

Miguel: “At least I’m not DATING mine!”

But it has the same effect. Tzekel-Kan is distracted, enjoying their fighting, and the audience is as surprised as he is when the pair work in sync again and punch the guy out. It’s a nice way of playing the scene out.

32) Friends Never Say Goodbye. A very sad song that plays when it seems like Tulio and Miguel are going to take separate paths in life and are really mad at each other. It actually has some nice truths to it, and again is slightly different on the soundtrack. Elton John is backed up by the Backstreet Boys for the song on the album. I hope that didn’t ruin it for some of you.

33) The film ends with the citizens of El Dorado crashing a pillar into their gate so as to keep Cortes from finding the city, only it is falling too soon. So Chief Tannabok grabs some of the ropes and holds it back for a while. And this is probably REALLY mean of me and I apologize in advance but I just thought of this:

I’m so sorry.

34) According to IMDb:

A series of sequels featuring Miguel, Tulio, Chel, Altivo and even the armadillo going after other legends about gold was planned, similar to the Shrek (2001) series, but following the disappointing box-office results they were immediately canceled.

While that would’ve been interesting I’m kinda glad this film just stands on its own. It’s a nice little gem that way.

I love this film, and think a lot of people out there will too. People don’t really talk about it these days except to talk about how no one talks about it. It’s a nice variation from standard Disney fare, the music is great, freaking Miguel & Tulio are just awesome, and it is just such an enjoyable/adventure filled film. I think you should all watch it now! It’s on Netflix if you have it. So go. Go follow that trail! (Too easy?)
