When You Wake, 怎能当梦一场
by acertainrogue
T, 39k, Wangxian
Summary: He lay there buried under rabbit ears of wires, warmed by a thin blanket, breathing, breathing, never truly still, but never animated, either. “A-Xian,” Jiang-gugu said with a forced smile. “Your son and husband are here to see you. And your nephew too. He will be coming very soon.” A-Yuan ran up to Baba and held his hand. -- Sizhui grows up in a changing world, but his comatose father can't change with it. His family is determined to give him the love and forgiveness they didn't give Wei Ying. Kay's comments: So, this is definitely the kind of story that keeps you hooked and forces you to finish it in one sitting and even then, it'll still keep you awake for nights. It's just so good and so painful. Phew, so many knives! But, there's a happy ending, so you can definitely look forward to that! It's also actually set in real-world modern China, which is too rare for my liking in the English-writing fanfic community and I really appreciate all that went into this story and am also so grateful for the author for writing a whole thread over on Twitter explaining the cultural nuances one might have missed. As for the story, it's mostly Lan Wangji suffering and raising A-Yuan for thirteen years while Wei Wuxian is a coma. Cue: The Covid19 pandemic and the collapse of the health system and what that means for someone who's been in a coma for thirteen years. Excerpt: He lay there buried under rabbit ears of wires, warmed by a thin blanket, breathing, breathing, never truly still, but never animated, either. “A-Xian,” Jiang-gugu said with a forced smile. “Your son and husband are here to see you. And your nephew too. He will be coming very soon.” A-Yuan ran up to Baba and held his hand. Baba must have slept with Father when he was still awake. A-Yuan did remember being cradled in a cloud that was Father and Baba both, remembered being held between them in bed. There was a time when he had not known how to sleep otherwise. Baba had been cool, cool like the springs of silver dollar water, warm just enough so lotuses could grow. Tem-per-ate, he learned in school for his vocabulary section. But now, Baba was just cold. “Baba,” he squeaked, peaking over the side of the bed, tall enough that he did not have to tiptoe or have Jiang-gugu carry him anymore. “It’s me. It’s A-Yuan. Did you know I’m getting a cousin soon?” He fished in his pocket and found the dried grass butterfly Father had bought him on the roadside, from a man who peddled swallows with tails cut into forks and a green penguin waddling into life. “This can be your cousin too,” he told Baba importantly, nestling that gentle flutter of wing grass into Baba’s cold palm, so he could hold something when A-Yuan, Father, and even Jiang-gugu weren’t around. That was what Jingyi was to A-Yuan when he was at school, away from Father. Everyone needed a cousin, a companion, like the one that was about to be born. When he turned around, Jiang-gugu was crying.
pov lan sizhui, modern setting, modern no powers, pandemics, coma, hospitals, hospitalization, angst with a happy ending, comatose wei wuxian, implied/referenced homophobia, jiang family dynamics, good parent lan wangji, grief/mourning, covid19

ok, so my own final (and very, very fresh) thoughts, bc i wanted to wait until i'd watched everything to make a sweeping opinion of the whole series, and it's quite opinionated. and long. probably too long. i write essays for fun (everyone point and laugh):
my personal (and very, very fresh) ranking of the hbo war shows (not including gen kill bc that's a different war, sorry) goes- band of brothers > masters of the air > the pacific (it's the same for my title score rankings. that hasn't changed yet)
my main points of contention with MotA are 1) the nine episodes, 2) the length of the episodes, and 3) certain editing choices. nine episodes, compared to the classic ten, isn't Nearly enough time to showcase all that they wanna showcase (especially when the episodes are as short as they are, once you get past the recap and "next on" parts). and they wanna showcase A Lot! there so much going on! i'd ask them to pace themselves, but they literally Can't!
i mean, the editing choices are a Whole Thing! practically gives me whiplash sometimes lol. i feel like the weaker episodes still have parts that are Really good, but like. Individually. they don't work together as a stronger whole, which is to the episode's detriment. rather than jumping around (as the show often did), they could've benefited a lot from focusing on the One Story instead of squeezing three more stories into there (i say that, but i think the 4-5-6 episode run (all with multiple stories per episode) did this very well while Still being very good episodes, so it's not like it Can't be done, it just didn't work for 7, 8 and (partly) 9). granted, i suspect a chunk of the weird editing can be blamed on, well, there being only nine (and not all that long) episodes and no one wanting to cough up enough money for a tenth. ugh! i'm blaming both hbo And appletv for this (and covid19 ig). it's just One More Episode, how much could it cost?? and on the subject of episodes, why no episode titles? you used to love episode titles! i could've brainstormed episode titles for them For Free!!
when it comes to the characters, the rankings remain the same: BoB > MotA > TP. it's not totally fair tho, since BoB followed the exact same (and large-ish) group of guys from beginning to end, so you're Gonna know who they all are and get attached. this wasn't the case (for me!) when watching TP, since, unlike BoB, they jump around from group to group. i never felt like i got to know them all that well, outside of the main characters. i think MotA almost hits that sweet spot, especially knowing they had those two main things going against it: large cast And jumping from group to group. there's a case to be made for bias here (i Was the blog blogging about everything MotA for like. years.), but i still think they found a good enough balance of fleshing out the main characters while Also helping the audience get to know about a bunch of minor characters, of which there are a shitton (and their personalities, motivations, backgrounds, quirks).
there's also the representation of women. actual angel renée lemaire is and will always be a cut above the rest (bastogne is just That Good, argue with the wall). she's written so well that it almost makes me forget about how a bunch of women are portrayed in carentan. i have...issues with how women are portrayed in TP (even tho i love lena), so there's that. MotA falls in the middle (again) bc there's Way more women on-screen, but the writing can be questionable. balanced (as all things should be?) captain l'sandra wing-westgate is a character of all time, but episode 7 birthed the craziest discourse known to man (the hbo war fandom), but it wasn't all that unwarranted. manon and michou were sooo cool, but we didn't see nearly enough of them (another victim of the 'editing too many stories into one episode' problem. why not a whole resistance episode? or at least as the only b-plot?). paulina was interesting, but fulfilled one of those 'attractive foreign woman gives sage advice during/after sex' tropes (there's probably a tvtropes page for that idk). so many red cross girls, but none of the in-depth payoff :/ epic highs (multiple women!!) + epic lows (writing women??) = pretty tolerable. not great, not terrible. it was aight. i trust the fandom to build on this tho.
narrative is the big one tho. it's the whole "doing so much with so little" thing they've got going on (i'm ignoring their big budget here lol, could've been bigger). rather than having one main story with many connecting side stories (like BoB), it does the TP thing where there's many semi-connecting side stories set in the same general area. it helps that there's crosby's narration (i enjoy narration, sue me!), and he helps everything connect, sorta. but there's still other side stories that have Nothing to do with him (sandra's side gigs (revealing what she did takes away the mystery of what she Might be doing), the tuskegee airmen, quinn and bailey's eurotrip). would it have helped if there were two narrators (say, someone like rosie)? idk. gonna sit with that one. if there's a through-line, it's not super obvious like in the other two shows. which is insanely funny to me bc i literally like TP less, but that show's got an Extremely tight through-line all the way down. i can't lie and say it doesn't!
back to budget- i've seen people criticize this show for being called "masters of the air" when there's not much of "the air". ig that's fair, but there's the money issue, again. also, it'd get very repetitive if they were always in "the air". there was enough confusion about identifying who was who with the masks on, so imagine if that was Every Episode. out of All the issues the show has, this is the least issue-y. again, that's just my opinion, and it could change.
another budget thing (i think??)- idk enough about costuming and hair for period pieces so i can't comment on that with my 0 background in it, all i Can say is that i knoooooow people were clowning on marjorie cleven's hair in episode 1 (and i could see why, no such thing as 1940s beach waves). but from what i could understand- that actress' addition was a last-minute thing (bc i had No idea who the hell she was and i already found someone cast for marjorie all the way back in 2021). maybe there's something to say about the quality of rush jobs, but i really do think it was the most last-minute thing bc it came out of Nowhere, and timeline-wise, it looks like that bit was done long after everything else had been filmed. outside looking in, it seems something probably went wrong/didn't work out with who or what they already had and there wasn't enough wiggle room (time and money) to fix it. this isn't me being an apologist (lol), but i feel like a theorist at a big board bc nothing adds up! and i wanna know what happened! i'm just speculating! speculating on this blog is All i did for like Years lmaooo.
this is more of a side thing, but some of the lines in MotA feel really on-the-nose, almost corny. and that was Gonna be a knock against it, but there's some equally Extremely on-the-nose lines in both BoB and TP (Especially in BoB), so if i give MotA shit for it, i'd have to give all three shows shit for it lol. none of them are free of cheese.
another silly aside- no peaches, no main gingers, no main eugenes! we can't have 'em all, but c'mon!
there Is some good tho lol. one thing that MotA really has going for it, that i think the other shows have less of, is- and GOD it feels so weird to call this "world-building" when it's actual goddamn history, but- it's got world-building. maybe that isn't the best word for it. but i like how much Bigger ww2 feels in this show. BoB is one stop, then the next stop, then the next stop, which is, admittedly, good from a narrative-perspective (easy to follow), but not as good when you want a scale of how devastating the war is (in fairness, it was filmed in 2000). even TP feels pretty "enclosed" in a way. there's island-hopping, yeah, but all the damn islands look the same (not including australia lol). it's a theatre of the war we otherwise don't really get to see, but there still isn't all that much to see. it's water and sand and rock and dirt. which is the point, but Whatever! would've been cool if we saw sledge and co. in china, but moving on. MotA's able to really show the scale of it, both in the air and on the ground (that scene in germany during episode 6 was both harrowing and fantastic, also the inclusion of the actual children forced to fight nearer to the war's end in the finale). idk i just liked how it was able to zoom in and zoom out (and in and out again) in a way that the other shows weren't.
another thing it's got that the other shows don't is Really driving home how young everyone is (not "child soldier" young, but damn young). the cast is full of baby faces (rip babyface). a lot of ww2 shows/movies don't bother casting to reflect this, but i think overlooking that takes away from the overall impact. you browse through some old newspaper articles or photos of soldiers during ww2 enough and you're gonna Regularly get hit with the face of someone who looks like they could've sat in the desk next to you during a high school lit class. a lot of those b&w grinning faces look like kids bc they pretty much were (more so if they lied about their age). you don't really get that in BoB or TP (it's Crazy when the real life pics of the soldiers portrayed in those shows look younger than the actors).
i'm mixed about the tuskegee airmen. what we have, i love (thank you, dee rees). unfortunately, my biggest irk is that it leaves me wanting more of them, which i won't ever get. speaking as a black person (not speaking for All black people, just how i personally feel about it), having them included feels like a catch-22. if they weren't included in any capacity (all while knowing there were whole tuskegee airmen in stalag iii with the white main characters), there'd be a problem. however, including them (all while having these time constraints and not enough focus on them) leads to the feeling of having them "tokenized" (which i can see). there's no world where there'd be 50/50 split (even a 70/30 split) bc, at that point, just give them a show of their own. but there'd still be a general annoyance that big budget ww2 shows are only ever white. on the other hand, hanks and spielberg and orloff and miller and all the directors (except dee rees) are white, and how good of a story about black people are you really gonna get from the perspective of nonblack people? that in mind, i personally don't feel put-off by having the three tuskegee airmen in the posters/trailers/promos, bc i just Know there'd be a whole nother problem if they weren't included in them at all despite being in the show for however long (it'd be even worse if they made their pictures smaller). like i don't work in advertising, but i don't know if a "sweet spot" even exists for something like this. people would be pissed off no matter what imo (i'm also speaking with a bias here bc i had to browse through sooooo many comments written by white guys whining and crying and pissing and shitting themselves once they learned that the tuskegee airmen were gonna be in the show in Any capacity, so i'm just cool knowing they're in shambles rn (and josiah cross- he played richard macon- always goes Wild seeing his face in the promos, and his joy is pretty contagious).
i give it somewhere like a 7.5-8/10. 3.75 stars out of 5. not perfect, subject to change, gotta marinate, but i'm overall happy with it! MotA's best episodes are better than many other individual hbo war episodes. should i be grading it using the overall sum of its parts, not just the different parts? idk, i'm not being paid to grade lol.

folklore - taylor swift
Tumblr media
this album surprise dropped after the initial covid19 outbreak in 2020 and follows a completely new side of taylor swift, away from her established roots in pop music. 'folklore' is her 8th studio album and takes on a much more chill, indie, folklike energy, in a similar yet different way to her early country music. 'folklore' consists of these low energy ballads driven by beautiful acoustic instrumentals. this album is a narrative driven album through and through.
with folklore, taylor explores these ideas of nostalgia and romanticism; almost in a similar vein to her albums fearless and speak now. however, here she takes on a much more mature lens by discussing themes such as infidelity, suicide, and alcoholism. this is by far one of her most vulnerable albums, some of the tracks feel uncomfortably intimate at times; feeling like im listening to someone's sob filled journal entries. escapism, however, is the album's main theme; being fuelled by the pandemic, empathy and loss come through in the haunting vocals and instrumentals. it's crazy how private this album is.
the record additionally follows fictional narratives and arcs based in a love triangle between 3 teenagers. i LOVE when artists do this and transport us into a whole new world unique to an album. moreover, this fictional narrative is extremely realistic and relatable; in a sense being semi autobiographical to swift herself. the story of this album is by far its shining feature.
my favourite track would have to be 'betty'. this song is told from the perspective of the fictional character james, who is apologising to betty after cheating on her. i love this, swift's ability to delve into this persona and to still create such a personal feeling song is crazy. this song takes clear inspiration from her earlier country music and its honestly sort of comforting; listening to this teenage boy beg for forgiveness over an americana inspired instrumental. i do have to give 'august' and 'the 1' shoutouts here as they are extremely personal songs to myself; lyric-wise.
overall, 'folklore' is by far one of taylor's best albums. escaping into this fictional world in the trees on a late august's day, swift manages to delve back to her roots and explore a softer sound. she manages to reinvent her artistry on this record, and i doubt she'll ever be able to produce a body of work as intimate as this.
favourite track: betty
least favourite track: epiphany

can I get BTS for any part of A Beautiful Poison?
A Beautiful Poison on AO3:
Writing this story was a personal catharsis for me. I pretty much exorcised my COVID19 demons into it.
The pandemic was a window into both the brightest and darkest aspects of human nature. As it wound down, I struggled to process all that. And what better way to work through Stuff than to mold it into a fanfic starring one's favorite blorbo?
Elrond is the light: altruism, kindness and persistence in the face of despair. The courage to do what needs to be done, even if that thing is hard, exhausting or unpopular. Valor without renown, and all that.
Tarlanc, his foil, falls to the siren song of a simple cure, an easy way out that will save nothing and no one but himself, and not even that.
I've never done as much historical research for any fic as I did for ABP. That, too, was therapeutic. Reading about historical plagues and the people who lived through them made me feel less alone. Humanity has gone through this before, and then, as now, we were being humans at our very best and very worst.
I cried over the quote from the 14th century Italian chronicler at the end of chapter 1 because his description of the horrors of he Black Death exactly matched my fear at the peak of the pandemic: what happens when there are too many bodies to fit inside the morgue?
Turns out that in the 21st century you can simply rent a mobile one, and so there was no tossing in rivers or dogs dragging bits through the streets. Even so, the best fictional horror is just this side of real, and the opening chapter was born. I'm still proud of how vivid and effectively terrifying it turned out.
Ancient alchemy, too, was a strange comfort. Orpiment and mercury and the Golden elixir, ... People of all times have believed in wacky and toxic cure-alls. Hydroxychloroquine, horse dewormer, and Facebook knows what else are just another iteration. There truly is nothing new underneath the sun. Somehow, that's a relief.
And then came the final fight, and I decided to just write an opulent horror scene and have some pure, self-indulgent fun. Elrond and Tarlanc duking it out in a pool of blood and poison, smashing the room to bits was pure stress relief, and a joy to write. (I'm aware that this sounds weird, said about a mutilation scene, but writing is a craft and I took a craftsperson's joy in trying to do it well)
Even a couple of years later I'm still proud of A Beautiful Poison. I think it's among the best things I've ever written and I'm always tickled pink when people mention it, so thanks for asking!

COVID – 19 & ROBOTICS
Research
Robots in the Hospitality Industry
Part of the reason why robots have emerged as a popular technology trend within the hospitality industry is because ideas of automation and self-service are playing an increasingly vital role in the customer experience. The use of robots can lead to improvements in terms of speed, cost-effectiveness and even accuracy.
For example, chatbots allow a hotel or travel company to provide 24/7 support through online chat or instant messaging services, even when staff would be unavailable, delivering extremely swift response times. Meanwhile, a robot used during check-in can speed up the entire process, reducing congestion.

.@mrthomascornes - “TotalMTB 💚 The @totalmtb Community is a place which is close to my heart. 2020 during the Lockdowns in the UK of the Covid19 pandemic found me very isolated and spending a lot of my free time on my own. Luckily my old Mountain bike was in the shed and I used MTB as an escape for a couple of hours each day, much like a lot of people. It was only when I started getting back into Cycling properly and bought a new 29er hardtail in 2021. I realised how much it had a positive effect on my outlook on life in general. And positive effects on my physical Health. Discovering the TotalMTB community and realising that everybody else has a Story also showed me that it was Okay to share these less positive emotions. That so many people have struggles but use their bikes to create focus and generate motivation. Having decent goals to chase means people grow within themselves. Changing the stigma around being able to have conversations about mental health really opens up the sport to a wider range of people, it gives everyone that space to express themselves through their riding and the confidence to meet up with new people and get out of the house for a few hours. The fund raising I feel is incredible, and I love help promote this Organisation on my socials and by wearing my Jersey out and about on the bike. It takes a lot of time and hard work, but it’s bringing more people into the sport and building the community into a more diverse and empowering place to be. Thank you for everyone’s Hard Work, and I urge as many of my friends and followers as possible to get involved with the community and share the Love! 😃💚🤘” 📸Credit @dickingabouttv . . 🐰🐇🌚 #HappyLunarNewYear #YearoftheRabbit from #Asia Being that I usually do my #HipHop 🎤 Tours here in Winter. I have alot of experiemces & memories of #LunarNewYear celebrations & holidays overseas. It uses #LunarCalender dates change annually We document some of this is @DLabrie upcoming 🎶📹📽 #BEMYSELF #LinkinBio 1 recent memory is being here official start of #CoronaVirus spreading of outside of #China. Long B4 official Global #Covid19 #pandemic ,🇺🇸 shutting down, #maskmandates #shelterinplace & #socialdistancing ... i was bouncing around #Japan #HongKong #Macau when news hit late 2019 then I ended up in #Pyeongtaek #SouthKorea for a show @jjsjazzf early 2020 during the holiday. Then @kobebryant passed during holiday weekend. Went back to #Seoul & this when people started staying home. Our finals shows & streets started being more empty. Fear was growing. I went back to #USA & whole world had changed like I had never seen in my life. #BayArea at least in my hood #Oakland I was mostly familiar w/ #LNY as #ChineseNewYear & cool looking #ChineseNewYearParade i learned alot more from being out here & from my Dj @lanetjones from Indiana @hiphopcongressinc Its celebrated or not celebrated differently depending on the country. Im going to just talk about #Korea In🇰🇷it's a national family holiday where people usually go 2 their hometown & do traditional ritual w the fam honoring ancestors. While kind of celebrated for show & retail purposes based on Western Influence Thanksgiving Christmas & Universal Calender New Year are not official holidays here. For the most part except for foreigners these are just regular days w/ regular schedules. "LNY" which is usually Jan or Feb is the real Holiday Season where people get days off work, kids get winter break from school &folks travel 2 see family. The fact that #Covid outbreak came around this time probably was not good for containing spread. But just a coincidence. No 1 knew what was coming then. Holidays are rooted in Tradition , Tradition rooted in Culture. Culture rooted in History. History often from stories. Take time to connect these dots in your own community. You'll be wiser. #YearofRabbit (at Asia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn1iAM1SXDI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My first blog : a bit of history of a big challenge I was presented 18 months ago to define who I am today : Christopher J Bonelli 2.0
Tumblr media
I came down with a very serious case of COVID-19 Delta Variant. I was placed in a medically induced coma for 55 days FROM July – Sept 2021, in the ICU. I had to be intubated and put on a ventilator, and eventually they had to do a tracheotomy, because they couldn't extubate me otherwise. While there they did a number of surgeries on me, on top of the tracheotomy, included a feeding tube, three chest tubes and multiple central lines.
On the 55th day I woke up with tubes coming out of all parts of my body. I was there for another week and a half, after being released from the ICU. When I was discharged, couldn’t walk or talk, and quickly realized the enormous feat I would have in front of me in order to recover. I had to learn how to walk, talk, eat, breath, and perform daily activities of living, all over again. I’m still on the big oxygen machine and my lung capacity is on 53% , doctors say I should make a recovery between 16-24 months. It currently has been 15 months since being discharged.
I’ve been a loyal tenant for three years now and this is the first time I am late on rent due to a financial hardship from getting sick and having over a year of rehabilitation? This complex has tried to evict due to a few weeks late on rent smh . Why Should I need to be penalized, the government did not help with ANY COVID RELIEF PROGRAMS …the state of FLORIDA did not find me temporary disabled granting me with SSDI although I met all the criteria. ERAP and SNAP declined me probably because my taxes showed I was making more than the threshold but what was I supposed to the in the following months with a 14 month no work order should help because I was making 6 figures and I will again when im fully healthy.
The leasing office knew everything that was going on and put me into another apartment 1406 at the same address 405 ne 2nd st apt 1406 fort Lauderdale fl 33301. There was no exchange a move in fee they handed me a key and I signed a lease. During the move I passed out twice and had to be hospitalized again because my lungs arent capable of that much endurance yet. So I have received an eviction notice and 3day notice to vacate on my door. I’m trying to keep a positive mindset that I will get better soon but I was the only survivor with delta variant from imperial hospital and have not received any funding from government. Im at the point where I need assistance from the government . I really need help.
Having a fiancé cheat on me during my recovery , losing my finances , job , relearning to become a human again of course I’m going to deal with mental issues that I have been overcoming through therapy
Im constantly getting my organs checked and my immune system is at the lowest. I lost everything in a snap of a figure but instead of sitting there an sulking I’ve been pushing myself to be strong and get passed this I went in the hospital at 195lbs came out at 120, I’m finally putting the weight back on, but there seems to be an obstacle in my way every time. I have major PTSD, Major Depression and anxiety disorder all diagnosed by a psychiatrist as well as permanent fibrosis in both my lungs. I went into AFIB 3 times as well. I’m only 32 and it’s a mission for me to bend over and put the dishes away or to walk just one block, I was a bodybuilder before my life was turned upside down.
It’s been 17 months and I have made a 90% recovery I believe it’s time Now its time for me to get back on my feet and others in need of my support and share my story to help overcome obstacles such as mine.

like "normalization" "awareness" "visibility" are the main activism buzzwords that to me mean literally nothing. "visibility" of an oppressed group is very obviously not a good thing lol like we all know this why do we play around so much. if there's a group that everyone makes up fucked up stories about what do you think happens when we suddenly put a spotlight on em and keep it there. now they're a boogie man that came out of the dark and they're publicly condemned and abused. "awareness" is also rarely ever a problem for oppressed groups. I can confidently say that most people "unaware" of the existence of my marginalization are willfully that way and hold the lives of other people in such contempt that they'll make up degrading stories about those lives when "made aware". I've got a chronic illness and disability from covid19 and awareness is never the problem. if the person I'm talking to has no awareness than once they're told, they decide it's made up lol people are LAAAAAAAZY that's the main problem every marginalized group is up against. if you're afforded a place of comfort by some aspect of your cultural position than you are LAAAAZZZZZYYYYYYYYY about the lived realities of the those without the same. sick people are overexaggerating or whiney or they deserve it because illness is a moral/spiritual defect or they're not doing enough-- these are all ways of saying "I'm too lazy to look at this" not "I've never seen it before". that's why awareness and visibility don't do shit
