“How’d you get stuck with babysitting duty anyway?” Boba asked one day during dinner. “Oh, I volunteered for this,” Fox told him. “Why the kark would you do that?” “Language,” Fox admonished. “Well, I was just living my normal boring life and I thought to myself, ‘I don’t get called an ugly piece of banthashit often enough.’ So I decided to adopt you.” Boba snorted. “You’re a psychopath,” he told Fox. “I’ve been called worse,” Fox replied breezily. Boba doesn’t find a new family and Fox doesn’t become anybody’s dad; an adoption story.
@bilbosmom-belladonna commissioned me to illustrate a scene from her delightful fic Trying to Escape What You Can't Let Go. She was amazing to work with and you should absolutely check out her fun little found family story!

Save the Date by @mallstars
In the twelve years after the war, Harry attends sixteen weddings. As friends and acquaintances vow their lives to one another, he watches quietly from the sidelines. Step by step, Harry pieces himself back together, builds a life from the wreckage of his past and falls, slowly and thoroughly, for Draco Malfoy. A story told in sixteen parts, of patient and transformative love, of queerness, of reaching out and holding on. Featuring plenty of pining, Gilderoy Lockhart getting married in a fever dream of glitter and product placement, and Rita Skeeter spitting a steady stream of venom at Harry and Draco's every move.
I was so ecstatic when @eevans22 sent me this absolutely gorgeous typeset of Save the Date by mallstars, as this is the final mallstars fic that I haven't read yet (bar now their two-days old Dronarry which you bet I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on) and the idea of reading it in HARDCOVER form was a dream too lovely to resist.
In terms of design, I wanted something elegant, hopeful, and clean to reflect eevans' typeset and mallstars' gorgeous prose. I matched an embroidered/beaded spine with one of my favorite of the Duo bookcloths: FLIEDER, which photographs terribly, but just believe me that it's a gorgeous silver/lilac/light pink, and matched it with our lord & savior, Renato Crepaldi endpapers.
Tumblr media
(Sorry for the repeat photo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also hand-dyed linen thread chartreuse to fit the springtime/hopeful vibes & matched that to the endbands :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also am slowly, but surely improving with my construction, including the FLAT LAY, which has eluded me.
Tumblr media
And them some typeset details from eevans, because it's so gorgeous :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am devouring this fic whole as we speak and loving it so so so much! mallstars, thank you for writing such amazing work, and eevan, for the lovely typeset! this was my first blind bind, and it was actually a super fun experience that i would absolutely repeat again for fics i know i will love :)

Maxiel Hogwarts Au...
Tumblr media
If you asked Max what he thought of Hogwarts, he would likely make a joke about pigs and insult their quidditch teams.
He isn't sure it's smart to do that now, in the middle of the Hogwarts' grand hall, completely surrounded by Hogwarts' students and staff. He isn't sure he could escape even if he had his broom.
"Wow, you really hate Hogwarts." The dreaded hat says atop his hair.
Shut up! Max thinks furiously at it. Get out of my head!
Everyone stares intensely at Max, not daring to breathe while the fate of the member of the national quidditch team is being decided. Even the teachers are at the edge of their seats, other than Dumbledore, he seems to know where Max will inevitably end up.
"Little quidditch champion. Everyone is expecting" The hat says, as if it's life of forever moving from head to head to call one of four words is somehow a greater destiny than Max's.
It's not. Max knows he will go on to succeed in life, and win as many quidditch championships as he wants and then retire on an island in The Maldives with a butt load of cash while the hat is left in a dusty room, waiting for it's yearly use. Max wants to reach to rip it up but it would not be wise to do so in front of Dumbledore himself. His hands stay in his lap, frown etched on his face.
"Impatient. Immature." Max's fingers twitch slightly. There is only so much backtalk one can take from a hat.
"Violent and uncaring, wherever will I put you?" Max doesn't agree with that description, he cares plenty, about winning that is.
"Foolish. Foolish boy." It doesn't hurt, Max has heard those words plenty of times.
Max sulks.
It's a beat of silence before the suspense reaches its climax. "Hufflepuff! " The hat hollers, not bothering to consult Max on it's decision. Which is very rude and impolite.
The entire room erupts into chaos, screams of "What! " and "No way! No way!" echo throughout the hall.
Max can't help but agree, he thought he might end up in Gryffindor or Slytherin, maybe Ravenclaw if he was super unlucky. But Hufflepuff? His father was going to disown him. The media are going to have a field day. Well they were going to already, regardless of which house Max was put in.
Dumbledore moves to pull the hat off of Max, the treacherous thing whispers one last time: "Things will make sense in time. Be patient. Do not mope."
Max doesn't mope. Verstappens can't mope, so he doesn't.
Dumbledore gently guides a slightly speechless Max to the Hufflepuff table, pushing him into the seat before winking and walking off.
Max wants to burn down this school.
Cheers erupt from the Hufflepuff table, hands coming to pat him on the back and fawn over him.
The other tables seem miserable at the prospect of losing out on a quidditch champion.
"Oh my god! Hi! Hi! Oh my god! It's you!" A boy excitedly chatters to his left, other students crowd around him and Max suddenly finds that he can't breathe. It's like he's small again, after being knocked off his broom by an overly excited big kid. He had fallen to the ground, too exhausted and overwhelmed to get back up.
His father had been mad, really mad. He hadn't slept well again after that.
"Guys! Guys! He doesn't look so good. " Whoever that is, is definitely right, Max can hardly breathe, he tries to use the breathing technique his father taught him after his first match, control his breathing. It doesn't work, it only causes the panic and urgency in his veins to surge. It did work, it's purpose was to put him on guard, not calm down.
He curls into himself, hands around his ears to protect from the deafening sound of crowds cheering. His bubble of personal space is of course pried and poked at. Fans never had any self awareness when it came to these matters and his father never did have sympathy for personal space.
Hands are pried away from him, he can hear outraged screeching at the action. His own quidditch team's screams when he was 6 years old and pulled away to join the older kids. They thought it wasn't fair that a small boy climbed the ranks faster than they did.
"Hey! Hey! Everyone back up right now!" The entire opposing team bombarding him in an attempt to stop him. The referee's reprimand that fell on deaf ears.
The people at his sides are replaced and gentle hands hold him back up, out of the ball he curled himself into.
Max doesn't dare look up, too afraid at the thought of seeing his father's judgemental look.
"Hey, are you okay? " Max turns his head, soft, gentle, warm eyes, concerned. Jos was never concerned, he was the uncaring one! Not Max!
"I'm fine. " A repeated response, practiced again and again every time he came home to his mother.
The teen with the soft eyes gestures for another boy to sit on Max's other side. The boy opposite Max looks on in concern.
"Hello. I'm Daniel Riccardo, I'm a prefect of Hufflepuff, it's nice to meet you." The gentle boy says, eyes still filled with concern.
"Max Verstappen. " Max manages to choke out.
"The boy on your left is Yuki Tsunoda and that's Lando Norris." Daniel gestures to the boy sitting opposite Max, who waves shyly.
The ruckus Max's sorting caused calms down and everyone settles down to listen to Dumbledore's welcome back speech which luckily does not mention Max.
Max feels strange between Riccardo and Tsunoda, like dread wrapped in false cotton. Norris also peers at him from time to time, creep.
They're sent back to their dorms. Max tells Riccardo that he can get there on his own but the older boy frowns and insists that he takes Max. Max thinks his father would be disappointed at his complacency but he doesn't have the strength to fight it.
Riccardo leads him to the kitchen, Max wants to snap some insult about him being a goody two shoes and how this is none of his business. He holds his tongue.
Riccardo gestures to a specific barrel, looking more worn out than the ones around it. He taps a certain beat, perhaps it's a secret code. That's childish, Max decides, they are not children playing in a fort.
The barrel swings open.
Max grimaces at the small tunnel.
"Here, you try tapping it." Riccardo puts Max's hand to the barrel.
Max repeats the rhythm perfectly. Memory exercises were part of his training.
Once Riccardo is satisfied, he points at the tunnel, almost as if he wants Max to crawl through it.
Max scrunches his nose, seriously? The older boy points more urgently and Max relents, shoving himself through the tunnel.
Well, not shoving, he's not really big, a fact his father loathed, putting him on diets with large sums of proteins and even attempting to use transfiguration spells before it was put to a stop by his mother.
Max wished his mother had not stopped his father. Maybe he would have an excuse not to join this god forsaken house.
It's an agonizing 5 second crawl before he pops out the other end right in front of Lando Norris, the boy before.
Daniel appears behind him, putting a hand on Max's shoulder.
"So Max, this is the Hufflepuff house. You know Yuki and Lando. That's Oscar, Nico and Valtteri." Riccardo urges the boys to come forward.
"It's Verstappen. " Max declares, Riccardo quirks an eyebrow and the rest of the boys look equally confused.
"Hi! I'm Lando! I'm like a huge fan, do you mind signing this for me? " The boy's yellow robes are somehow orange.
Max's PR training kicks in and he smiles one of those sickly sweet smiles that his father loves to wipe off his face before ordering him to smile again. His posture straightens and he reaches a hand around the younger boy's shoulders, patting him on his back once, twice. Just like he rehearsed.
"Sure! " His tone is so obviously a faux sweet as he reaches to retrieve the black marker from his back pocket. The boy has stars in his eyes and Max feels guilty, he always does. He's a fraud.
He signs the hat from his national team, the one he left behind.
He wishes he didn't.
"Hey, are you okay Max? " Riccardo asks, looking weird again.
"I'm doing great, how are you? " His PR trainer said asking back these questions were endearing, cute. Max's father had mocked him for that act, his trainer had been fired after that.
"How about I bring you to your room? Would you like that?" Riccardo asks, Max smiles again, nodding.
"Sure." Norris waves enthusiastically as Riccardo leads him out of the common room and into his private room.
"Are you alright? Max?"
"Call me Verstappen."
"Verstappen. Are you alright?"
"You can go, Riccardo. "
"... Call if you need anything."
When the prefect leaves, Max wants nothing but to burst into tears. He flops onto the bed.
The next day he drags himself out of bed. Even if classes don't start till 9 and the sun hasn't risen yet.
Jos expected him to continue his strict training regime. He was almost tempted to skip it and lie to his father but he thought he better not after his humiliating sorting from yesterday.
Now, alone, Max can see the Hufflepuff room properly. It's... It's all gentle lighting, none of the bright fluorescent lights his room had. The chairs looked comfy and the many plants lazing around the common room tempts him to join them.
Perhaps that would be a better fate, turning into a plant to live the rest of his life in the common room. His hand lingers on his wand, mind on a spell his professor taught him when he was just 9. He didn't.
When he had crawled out of the Hufflepuff room, fully dressed, broom in hand, the sun was just peaking from the horizon.
The halls are empty, some portraits mutter as he walks by. His father's portraits never moved, other than those instructed to. For example, a painter that never stopped moving his brush or a surfer never to take a break from the sea.
Making his way to the Hogwarts field, he stretched, slow and patient. His bones crack from the exhausting day he had before.
The field is decent sized, not as big as the one he played in during national championships, bigger than the one his father made him run laps around till he fainted.
He glides through the air easily, flying comes easily to him. If he were to be given his own time and freedom he thinks he would likely still be a top player in the school leagues.
It's better that he was hurled up though. Better to have reached the top by sheer force of his father's training.
He thinks about his national team, he's a reserve, too young to play officially but the team has him in some practices and he attends smaller competitions for them. Max suspects it's more about having a claim on Max when he comes of age.
He's 15, he still has 3 years to choose which team he wants to go to. By then, he will make his own choice. He will not do whatever pleases his father anymore.
The golden snitch twinkles near the end of the field. Max pretends not to see it.
It is fun, sometimes, tricking the golden snitch, allowing it a false sense of security. Like a tiger cub playing with a cricket.
His father would get mad at him if he did it for too long, he was upset his son couldn't catch it at once. Which Max could, he just didn't see the fun of it.
The fluttering golden ball is in his hands before it can even think of escaping.
Max briefly wonders if the snitch can possibly think, he lets it flutter away, repeating his game once again.
In the golden light of the sun and shaded path of the clouds, the wind whizzes past his ears, he falls into the familiar rhythm of flying, sometimes he makes his own obstacle courses, weaving through imaginary hoops.
By the time the sun reveals itself fully to watch Max fly, he realizes that a crowd has gathered around under him, star-struck Hogwarts students watching, mouths open and everything.
He flushes slightly, he may have had many adoring fans due to his membership in the national team and young age but come on! These were his peers.
Max lowers down, checking his watch to see that it is indeed 8.30am and he has to run if he wants to get to class not drenched in sweat.
He waves slightly to the crowd, zipping to the house dorm even though he's probably breaking several school rules.
He knocks the tune and enters quickly, still high from the adrenaline of flying.
He climbs out of the tunnel only to come face to face with Daniel Riccardo, his face stern and stony.
"Verstappen! You can't just sneak out like that!" Daniel's expression softens when he sees Max.
Max knows he feels pity even if Riccardo knows nothing about his life.
"I of course did not sneak out, I left my room and went to the field." Max doesn't think early hour training counts as sneaking out, going to parties in the dead of the night is sneaking out.
"Max, we were worried. I went into your room and you weren't there. Thought you'd been kidnapped by the other houses to play quidditch for them or something... "
Max considers this briefly, Riccardo knocking on his door gleefully, freezing when he doesn't get an answer. Did his blood pressure spike? Did he throw Max's door open in desperation only to find the room empty?
Max grimaces.
"I went to go training... Sorry..." Max stands awkwardly, hands by his side like a child being punished by a parent.
Riccardo sighs. Max wants to cry.
"Please forgive me, I'm of course sorry, I will do anything!" Max cringes inside, begging with someone other than his father is a foreign concept.
Riccardo has a cheeky smile on his face, Max is almost scared.
"I'll forgive you... Only if you call me Daniel!"
Max groans inwardly, well he's also partly relieved but Daniel doesn't need to know that.
"What will it be Max? Will you call me the d word? Or will you suffer in my never ending spite! "Daniel's grin grows.
" Fine. "
" Fine, who? "
"Fine. Daniel."
Max flushes, weird.
Daniel looks elated.

Second binding I did was Passerine, by @thcscus!
Tumblr media
This has always been one of my favorite fics of all time, and it only felt right that I had a copy of my own to put on my shelf. I did this one during late June of 2022.
This was my first time attempting both a sewn endband and trimming of my textblock, but I’m still very proud of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing I love about this is the typesetting! I spent so long trying to make it as elegant and fancy as the actual vibes of the fic itself, and I’m still so damn proud of how it came out. Especially with the little 3 line poems that were in the summaries of each chapter

batman: the animated series S2E01
[VD: an exterior shot of a house in Gotham City at night. One side is pristine, with crisp white paint and clean windows. The other side is decrepit, the windows bordered up as the building itself looks rusty and like it's falling apart. Inside, Bruce Wayne is shown in his Matches Malone disguise and is unconscious on the floor after being electrocuted for sneaking in through a window. In the foreground we can see a man's shoes as he sarcastically announces, “It appears we have a prowler!” His voice is low and growled as his henchman flips Bruce over so he's laying on his back.
Bruce groans lowly as the goon slaps him twice to wake him up. He's hoisted up on his feet and then is roughly turnt around to face the shadows, where the mystery man is standing with his arms crossed. He asks, “Who are you? What are you doing here?” Bruce stutters his explanation in a fake voice as he rubs his head, “I'm Matches Malone. Heard bout a new mob. Thought I could make some more dough…” The man steps closer and jeers, “Is that so?” He walks away as Bruce watches him. The man flips a coin once with one hand as he continues, “Well, you heard right. In fact, you can double your take on the jobs we’re pulling... Assuming I let you live to join my gang!” He dramatically steps out of the shadows, revealing to only Bruce's surprise that it's Harvey Dent!
Bruce gasps slightly and stares at Harvey in shock as Two-Face steps closer to him. He sneers, “Matches Malone, huh? Never heard of ya. But theres something about you that I don't like.” He jabs his finger against Bruce's chest as he goads, “Nothing that I can put my finger on but I trust my hunches. Kinda like a second sight, y'know?” He pulls out his coin and states the stakes, “Good heads you live, bad heads you don't. Simple, huh?” Behind Bruce, the goon cocks his gun as Harvey flips his coin. Bruce stares wide-eyed as Harvey looks at him with an impassive expression. The coin lands in Harvey's palm—the scarred side facing up. Bruce looks down at it with that same appalled expression before looking over his shoulder—where the gun is already being raised to bluntly hit his head with the muzzle of it. We hear Bruce's pained grunt as the scene cuts back to the exterior. END VD]

Drarry Fic Rec: Set Six
Tumblr media
Dady Says by GallaPlacidia podfic circa 3,9 hours, M
Eleven-year-old Scorpius starts writing to Harry. Harry starts to fall in love with Draco through his portrayal in his son's letters. Featuring an extremely remorseful Draco living with muggles and working at a second- hand book shop, an isolated Harry, and a Scorpius who's dreading going to Hogwarts because he knows he'll be bullied there.
Modern Love by @tackytigerfic 61,323 words, E
Harry Potter, of all people, knows that life isn’t always fair. And no one gets to be happy all of the time. But surely there’s something more—something better—than a rubbish Ministry job, and a lonely old house, and that feeling that everyone out there is doing a better job of living than Harry is. And it really doesn’t seem fair that Draco Malfoy is back in Harry’s life, all of a sudden, and even though he’s wandless, and living with Muggles, and making his mother cry with his lifestyle choices, he’s happy. So what's he doing right, that Harry isn’t? Because things don’t really change, do they? And if Harry can’t be happy, he’ll settle for a good night’s sleep, some posh antiques, and the opportunity to find out what Malfoy has been up to for all these years. And that’s what starts it all.
Here’s The Pencil, Make It Work by ignatiustrout 49,493 words, M
Harry thinks "Why is Malfoy working in a coffee shop in muggle London?" is a much simpler question than, "Are you going to accept that auror offer and, if you don't, what will you do?"
This set includes my favorite stories about Draco having found his place in the Muggle world and Harry being lost among wizards. All of them feature the boys running into each other a few years after the war, and Harry trying to understand this new Draco Malfoy. Surely he is up to something; why else would he be laughing with his Muggle friends and look so bloody handsome!?
Friendships are always formed first, but they fall in love every time (sorry, spoilers).
'Dad Says' is a wonderful, high-quality podfic read by Galla herself. It has a sad and lonely Harry, a charming but exiled Draco, an adorably earnest Scorpius, and a perfect dynamic between the three of them. 'Modern Love' is lovely, fun, and has many of these same ingredients, but there is also a (sexy, tall!) vicar flirting with Draco and making Harry incredibly jealous. 'Here's The Pencil, Make It Work' also features this same dynamic (sad Harry + exiled Draco = meeting in the middle), and I will honestly never tire of Draco's Muggle friends recognizing Harry Potter's stalking of Draco Malfoy as the crush that it is.
Also, all of these have incredible original characters that make up Draco's new group of friends, and Draco casually using Muggle things with Harry gaping at him. Enjoy!

heyyyy, how are you?
so, for the mother's day (and the foster this love au), what about sam and tara having the greatest day, doing all the things together and at night, when tara is going to sleep, she calls sam "mom" without noticing? and sam is like 😭😭
The first time Sam hears Tara call her mom, she's bleeding out on the kitchen floor. She thinks she must have been imagining it, blood loss will probably make you hear all kinds of things. Stuff got pretty hectic after that, and Sam forgets about it. She doesn't hear Tara say it again.
After 7 months of being too nervous to leave the house, Tara wakes her up one Sunday morning, earlier than she'd like on her day off, and asks to go to the zoo. Sam would have said yes anyway, overjoyed that Tara is ready to take that step and move forward with everything that happened, but the fact she brought Sam breakfast in bed makes sure she agrees without pretending to complain about it first. Tara looks so nervous, constantly fidgeting with her hands. Sam doesn't want to scare her off the idea.
So they go to the zoo. Sam's a little concerned that Tara's pushing herself too far, and wonders why now, as she sticks to Sam's side, hand squeezing hers tightly. She's shaking slightly as she eyes all the people around them.
"Hey, so what d'ya wanna see first, the wolves?" She asks, nudging Tara, hoping to distract her. Tara loves wolves, Sam knows she'd never pass up an oppor- Tara shakes her head. "Hyenas," she declares, scanning the park map for a moment before pulling Sam off in the direction of the hyena enclosure. "Huh," Sam mumbles to herself, a little confused as she lets her lead her away by the hand.
"Y'know, hyenas are my favourite animal," Sam says in a faux-whisper, like she's revealing some grand secret. "I know," Tara responds simply, like it was obvious knowledge. It leaves Sam speechless as she tries to figure out how Tara could know that. She's never talked about her favourite animal before... has she? No, no, she's certain.
"And do you know why they're my favourite?" Sam questions, a laugh in her voice as they watch a mother play with her cubs. She's always impressed by Tara's observation skills. "They're pack animals, like wolves," Tara answers, "but the females are in charge. They're fast, and clever, and often misunderstood and misrepresented. Like you."
Sam's a little stunned by Tara's response, and more than a little touched. She blinks back tears. "You forgot one thing," Sam declares. Tara frowns up at her, doubt in her expression, "what?" "I like their spots," Sam says, tapping Tara on the nose in a way that never fails to make her giggle. "They're just like your freckles, adorable."
It's a long day, Tara taking Sam to see every animal she thinks Sam must like (and she's right, much to Sam's amazement). "Look, they're just like us," Sam announces, waving their held hands together at the otters floating past paw-in-paw. By the time they get ice cream, Sam's favourite flavour, and have Sam's favourite food for lunch, she begins to wonder if she's done something to make Tara think she feels bad or that she's having a hard time.
She can't imagine what, she thinks she's been doing pretty well, given... all that happened. It weighs on Sam, seeing Tara get steadily more stressed as the day goes on, watching the way she tries to hide it from her so they can stay a little longer.
By the time they get home, they're exhausted, and arm-in-arm with two new stuffed toy hyenas for their pack. Little sam is sleeping on the two stuffed wolves that sit atop Sam's dresser, and is delighted at the chance to scent mark the new additions.
After their evening routine, Sam flops back onto her bed, Tara cuddling into her side, yawning. "Did you have a good day," Tara mumbles into Sam's neck. "I had the best day," Sam proclaims, closing her eyes, "just like any day with you." Tara hums into her neck. "Thasgood," she slurs, beginning to fall asleep, "love you, mom."
Sam's eyes snap open. Oh.

Contrasting Colors
Link: ao3 Pairing: Jason Grace/Nico di Angelo Fandom: Percy Jackson & the Olympians Tags: post-Heroes of Olympus, Not TOA compliant, fluff, jealousy (but like only a little bit)
Word Count: 2,998
Summary:
There was a stranger on the subway who had been staring at them on and off since they had boarded the train. That wasn’t too unusual, but it was rubbing Nico the wrong way today. He shifted from one foot to the other as their car passed from the light of the last station into the darkness of the tunnel system once more. Maybe it was the fact that the stranger was a boy who looked just a little older than him. And taller. Broader, too, although he was almost certainly less experienced at actually using the muscle filling out his expensive name-brand athlesiure. He’d been looking between Nico and Jason since they left the shopping center they’d spent the afternoon at, but mostly he’d been looking at Jason. (or; Nico and Jason's journey to self-expression and belonging through really dumb shirts.)
There was a stranger on the subway who had been staring at them on and off since they had boarded the train. That wasn’t too unusual—Nico and Jason had both lived as demigods for long enough that a little staring wasn’t going to ruin their day unless it came with violence—but it was rubbing Nico the wrong way today.
Nico shifted again, hyperaware of the space between them. Were they standing close enough? Was it too close? They had walked onto the subway car together, but it would be plausible that they just happened to be standing next to each other while they were waiting for the train. The platform had been crowded, it could have looked like coincidence.
Nico knew that he and Jason didn’t look like a matched set. There was about a foot’s difference in height when they were both standing straight, and Nico almost always made it worse by slouching. Their resting expressions were completely different now that Jason’s updated prescription let him see clearly without squinting at the world. And, most noticeable, there was the difference in style: Nico was comfortable in his all black, and Jason was wearing one of the colorful and dorky t-shirts he’d bought on this trip.
(“Look, Nico!” he had said after dragging them both into a store that was about 50% anime merchandise. “It’s me!” He held up the shirt for Nico to see: a pale blue t-shirt with a white cloud-shaped breast pocket. The cloud had a cutesy blushing smiley face on it. Nico raised one eyebrow in question, and Jason pulled the pocket open. The fabric underneath the cloud was printed with a rainbow. It was a terrible joke, and Nico had laughed anyway.)
Nico glanced at the shirt—which Jason liked so much he’d found a bathroom and changed into it as soon as they left the store—out of the corner of his eye. The white of the little cloud almost glowed in the terrible subway lighting. It was so bright, and Jason looked tall and handsome and at ease, and that boy across the train car was looking at him and Nico kept noticing.
Nico brought his right hand up and fidgeted with the blue bandanna he’d bought and tied around his neck on an impulse as they were leaving the mall. The train slowed down to approach another stop and Nico braced himself not to stumble. He wasn’t used to wearing anything around his neck, but it wasn’t terrible. He could maybe do it more often.
On his left, Jason brushed his knuckles against Nico’s in a signal they had developed early on in their relationship, when they figured out that their comfort levels with PDA were decidedly different. I would hold your hand right now if you wanted me to, it said. Nico turned to give him a smile.
Jason was looking down at him, head tilted in a way that reminded Nico that he’d technically been raised by wolves. There was some concern in between his brows. He was completely focused on Nico. It was possible that he hadn’t even noticed the boy across the way, or that he’d dismissed him as mortal as quickly as Nico had and then not thought about him again.
Nico knew that, if he wanted, he could take Jason’s hand right now and prove to all the random strangers in this train car that they were a matched set. He could tell the boy that might or might not have been checking Jason out to fuck off without even opening his mouth. A tiny, possessive part of him wanted to.
Instead, he took a deep breath in and brushed his knuckles back. They both heard the thank you, I love you that implied. The taste of jealousy was bitter and Nico didn’t want to let it linger. He let the breath out.
---
This whole endeavor had started about two months ago, just after they started dating. Nico had been accompanying Jason on a lot of his Pontifex Maximus duties, meeting up with minor gods and drafting temples across the country. Nico’s shadow travel got them places on time and Jason’s flight got them back to where they were staying when Nico got too tired to jump again.
That particular day had been a bit rough. Nico had jumped the both of them halfway across the country to Nowhere, Iowa and was already exhausted when a hydra melted out of the cornfield next to them. Nico was no help in the ensuing fight.
Jason didn’t really need the help, though. He managed to kill it on his own in under ten minutes while Nico slumped against a nearby bale of hay, sleepily cheering him on.
Unfortunately, killing the hydra was not a neat process, and it managed to get him a few times with its acid spit. They worked together and managed to do a halfway decent job of burying the final head underneath Nico’s hay bale before Jason realized that half of his shirt had melted off during the fight.
He had only packed pajamas.
They managed to find Jason a new (ish) plain shirt at the one Goodwill in town quickly, but Jason seemed reluctant to leave. He kept looking back at one of the clothing racks they had passed by, even after they paid and were heading out of the store. Nico gave in to his curiosity.
“What was it?”
“Huh?” Jason asked. He tore his eyes away from the rack one last time and pulled the door open, holding it to let Nico pass first.
“You keep looking back. What caught your eye?”
“Oh, I…” Jason smiled. They headed off toward their motel at a decent clip; they didn’t have a whole lot of time to check in, have Jason change, and leave again to get to their meeting with the eccentric minor agricultural god. “It was nothing. There was a shirt that made me smile.”
“Oh?” Nico prompted.
“Yeah. It was kind of goofy, y’know. Jelly bean print.”
Nico huffed a laugh. “I can picture you in that.”
“Really?”
Nico raised an eyebrow. He had planned to tease Jason, but the hopeful look on his boyfriend’s face stopped him. Raised eyebrows and a hint of a smile and that light in his eyes were all because of a jelly bean shirt?
“Sure,” Nico settled on instead. “Why not? Goofy print for a goofy guy.”
It was evidently the right answer. Jason’s smile grew as they walked into the motel, checked in, and shuffled off to their room. Nico sat on one of the twin beds with his chin in his hands as Jason took over the bathroom to change.
Technically, Nico wasn’t needed here at all. He usually tagged along to these meetings to have something to do, but he knew that if he even hinted he might be feeling tired…
When Jason got out of the bathroom, Nico was lying face down on the bed. Jason fretted and fussed and insisted that Nico stay behind to take a nap, as Nico knew he would. As soon as he left, Nico got up and put his boots back on. The meeting probably wouldn’t take more than half an hour and he wanted to be sneaky, so he had to be fast.
Besides, if he was quick enough, maybe he really could take a nap after he got back from the thrift store.
---
The Jelly Bean Shirt was the most obnoxious shirt in the entire world and Jason loved it. It was a short sleeved button down that was just a touch too small across the shoulders for Jason, which meant that he often wore it open over a different shirt.
The only other shirts Jason owned were either bright purple, bright orange, or the solid green shirt they’d bought for the meeting. Jason very quickly became the easiest person to spot at camp. Leo and Piper teased him about it, but he took it with a smile and continued wearing the shirt.
The next time they left camp for Pontifex business, Jason asked if they could go shopping again afterward.
“I know it’s not really necessary,” he said, sheepish, “but it’s kind of nice. I’ve never really picked out my own clothes before.”
Nico stopped in the middle of rifling through racks of secondhand sweatshirts. Had… had he ever seen Jason in anything but camp shirts? He really tried to think. The t-shirt for the meeting last time didn’t count, it was just the closest functional replacement clothing for the job. They’d picked it out specifically to be unobtrusive. And then there was…
Nope, then there was the Jelly Bean Shirt and nothing else. Jason had been raised by the Legion and dumped into Camp Half Blood and he’d never had the chance to be anything but a representative of those two places, or of his father, or of the minor gods.
Nico might have dressed himself like a walking Hot Topic advertisement, but he chose to do that. He’d been choosing how to dress himself since he was ten. He looked at Jason’s sheepish expression out of the corner of his eye.
“You’re dating the son of the god of wealth. Why are we looking in Goodwill?”
“Target doesn’t have this kind of selection,” Jason answered.
“I can afford Armani, why would we go to Target.”
Jason eyed a sweater that might have been handmade, complete with giant pink applique teddy bear on the belly. He held it up to his chest and wilted when he noticed it was about three sizes too small for him.
“Armani would look too… business. Probably.” Jason put the sweater back and moved on to a more summery section. “I don’t know anything about fashion, but big labels like that sound way too fancy.”
“Right, you prefer designers who are more in touch with their inner six-year-old girl.”
Jason shrugged. “It makes me more approachable, doesn’t it? I’m not the Son of Jupiter, ex-Praetor of the Twelfth Legion, Titan Slayer, Champion of Juno, Hero of Olympus, Pontifex Maximus like that. I’m that guy with the unicorn shirt.” He then pulled out a t-shirt that had pom-poms dangling from every hem. “Is this too much?”
Jason held the stupidest shirt Nico had ever seen in his life up to his chest and Nico realized he might be in love with him. He bought the shirt.
---
And he’d kept taking Jason out, on dates and on trips to make his wardrobe feel like him, and that’s what landed them on the subway that morning. They’d gotten as far as they could on public transport, then clasped hands and slipped into the shadows.
“What’s with the scarf?” Jason tugged at the bottom of the bandanna once they settled into the familiar comfort of Cabin 13. Nico untied it to let Jason take a closer look, and to get the fabric off of his neck. It was, other than Jason himself, the brightest spot in the room. That felt like a pretty apt metaphor.
Gods, Nico didn’t want to admit it. He was working on being able to talk about his feelings, but it still sucked every time.
Jason never made fun of him, though. Nico took comfort in that fact as he staunchly refused to make eye contact, instead focusing on taking out and folding the new black skinny jeans he’d gotten to replace his old black skinny jeans. (He’d been wearing the old ones last time he attempted the climbing wall. It hadn’t gone well.)
“You like color.” It wasn’t a real explanation, he knew, but it was all that would come out at the moment. Nico smoothed away a few more wrinkles in the jeans.
“I like the way you dress, too, though. You look really good in black.”
Nico hid his reddening face behind his hair as he shoved the meticulously folded jeans into the drawer with the rest of his balled-up pants. He knew that. Jason, once he realized that it wouldn’t scare Nico away, was not shy with compliments. Nico knew very well how much Jason liked the way he looked. It was a lot sometimes, but it was… nice. It was really nice.
“I. Thanks.” Nico took in a breath and shut the dresser drawer, then stood up and let it out. He could do this. He turned toward Jason, who was still holding the bandanna. It almost blended in with the light blue of Jason’s new shirt. They weren’t exactly the same shade, but they were close enough to suit Nico’s purposes.
“We look really different. And that’s okay, I’m happy that you’re finding clothes that you like. But we don’t…” Nico walked over and took the bandanna from Jason’s hands to better demonstrate his point. “We look really different,” he ended up repeating. “And I just wanted.” It was suddenly hard to form words around the lump in his throat. When had that gotten there? This wasn’t a big deal, what was he even upset about?
“Can I hold your hand?”
Nico looked up. Jason had a hand extended to him and obvious concern furrowing his brow. Nico stepped past the hand and fitted his body against Jason’s instead. Without other people around, he didn’t have to worry about spite or jealousy or whatever motivating him. Everything was a lot simpler when it was just the two of them. Nico could take what comfort he wanted.
Jason wrapped his arms around Nico, just like he knew he would.
“I don’t care what anyone else thinks, you know that?”
“Yeah,” Nico mumbled into the blushy cloud on Jason’s shirt. It still smelled like the mall.
“The scarf looked nice on you, but you don’t need to wear color to be beautiful.”
Nico groaned and buried his face in his boyfriend’s chest. “I know.”  He was starting to feel stupid for his insecurity. Jason didn’t act like this for anyone else, why would a few stares bother him? The arms around him tightened.
“Besides, I think we look cute together like this.”
Nico looked up at him without bothering to step back at all. His chin was probably digging into Jason’s sternum, but that was Jason’s fault for being so tall. Jason looked down to meet his eyes and smiled.
(Nico was never, ever going to tell him how funny he looked from this angle.)
“Mismatching is cute, Piper keeps telling me that. It’s cute to wear mismatched socks. I think we’re cute together.”
Nico snorted. “I saw Piper’s bunk on the Argo II, I think she just can’t find matching socks.”
Jason pulled a face. “You might have a point. But Piper had one, too. A little variety and a little difference is good.” He leaned down and pressed a kiss to Nico’s hairline. “I think we look perfect together.”
“Sap.” The hug and the conversation and the visual angle all made Nico feel a lot better. Or maybe it was just being around Jason, honestly. Having honest conversations.
Maybe talking about his feelings wasn’t the worst.
The next day, the two of them had plans to head to New Rome to visit friends and work on Pontifex business. They were supposed to meet up at Thalia’s tree after breakfast and packing.
As usual, Jason was already waiting when Nico climbed up the hill. He smiled at Nico and extended a hand for him to take.
He was wearing one of the shirts they’d found yesterday—a pink button down with little dinosaurs printed all over it—under a denim jacket that had probably started its life black, but had faded into a dark grey over the years.
That was new. As in, that was new since yesterday afternoon. Nico would have remembered a jacket like that. He took Jason’s hand, but didn’t stop staring at the jacket.
“Where’d you get that?”
“Huh?” Jason brought his other hand up to fiddle with one of the buttons on the jacket, and Nico noticed that his nails had been messily painted black.
It looked… He looked…
“Oh! The jacket.” Jason laughed and it sounded a little nervous. “It’s Piper’s, actually, but she said I could have it. It was too big for her anyway, she was just planning on cutting it up for one of her projects. Said I’d get more use out of it.”
Nico stepped forward and ran his free hand over the denim. He didn’t comment on Jason’s obvious nerves.
“I like it,” he said. “You look good.”
Jason’s shoulders relaxed and he gave Nico a little grin. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. Do you like it?” he asked. This effort alone was enough to squash like, half of Nico’s insecurities, but this wouldn’t do any good if he were limiting Jason’s self-expression just like the Camps did.
“I do. It makes me feel more connected to someone pretty important to me.”
“Good.” Nico smiled at him. “I’m gonna steal it so often.”
“Hey! That defeats the purpose!”
Nico’s hand wandered to the jacket’s collar and he tugged on it, urging Jason downward. “Hmm,” he hummed into a kiss. “I’ll give it back sometimes. Don’t worry.”
Jason was smiling like a dope. He wound his free arm around Nico’s waist.
“That’s okay, then. We can share.”
Nico liked the sound of that. He kissed Jason one last time and tugged him into the shadows.
