Can I just say my favorite thing about My Neighbor Totoro is how non-threatening all the creatures are. Like this movie could easily have been about a big, scary forest creature that’s hostile to humans because humans destroy the Earth but these two little girls befriend him and show him humans aren’t all bad—but it’s NOT. The conflict of the movie is that the girls are stressed about their sick mother, something completely unrelated to Totoro, and Totoro shows up whenever. And I dunno I just really like that! These big, ancient forest creatures don’t need to always be threatening; they can just be big and friendly, they can get to know and befriend these two little girls, they can let them hug them and nap on them and take them flying, for no other reason than just because!
