a note my grandmother left me on a bag of yarn when I told her I didn’t have much for yellows left in my stash. I know it’s about yarn, but it feels like a reminder — not in a greedy, self-serving way, but a little bit of encouragement to allow myself to enjoy what is good.

“Just don't rush into things. You'll get your heart broken again! There are more important things in life. Some people never find love, but they do find happiness.”

you’ve been dead for four years tomorrow and there’s so much i never got to know about you. i think about it everyday. every time im cooking, cleaning, listening to music, reading, watching a show or a movie. what were your favorite things? did you know it was your sons fault that i never saw you? did you know how much i loved you and talked about you? did you know that i was on my way to you when you died? i had to pull over and get out of the car for a few minutes to scream and cry.
every year it’s the same train of thought. regret. anger. sadness. regret that i don’t have more pieces of you to hold onto. angry that your son isn’t a good father. sad that i’ll never see you again, never hear you laugh again. i wish i wanted kids so i’d have someone to pass your name and memory onto, but your son isn’t a good father.

Old folks are so weird. Especially old religious folks. Years and years ago, a great aunt of mine gave birth to twelve children, basically was pregnant once a year. My grandma told me she died from trying to tie her tubes. She said the women who did it didn't know what they were doing and were bad people.
I suggested, perhaps, that having so many children must been so hard on her that she'd be willing to take the risk of the procedure just to make it stop.
But my grandma insisted that she was a very happy woman, always happy. She would not stop saying how happy she was. She also insisted that having babies isn't up to us, it's up to God. She wouldn't entertain the chance that even if she was happy in the day to day, that maybe being pregnant constantly and taking care of all those children took it's toll. That maybe living like that was worth the risk, the danger, to be able to exist outside of bearing children.

I have something to confess...
Though I know I shouldn't...
Grandma Debbie Lynn's pancake recipe survived her rage burning.
Here...
"The batter is thick and smooth. Let cool until bubbles start to appear on the center. Preheat griddle to 400 degrees. Lightly coat skillet evenly with melted margarine and cinnamon. Stirring occasionally in warm cinnamon rolls.
Water until golden brown and crispy on top of pancakes. Scoop batter onto greased baking sheet for 45 minutes or until bananas are moistened and slightly softened.
Teaspoon of tartar sauce and salt together in another bowl using your fingers to mix in the peanut oil for frying.
Butter and maple syrup in a microwavable baking pan until browned and crumbly.
Yolks and milk together in a blender until you can add in finely shredded zucchini in batches as necessary.
Let pepper flakes and vanilla yogurt melt in plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled.
I hate you Jerry."

Spent my mother’s birthday with my grandmother, great aunt and their cousin (I have no idea what kind of family member she is to me, because what even are family trees!?), sadly my dad and sister couldn’t make it.
Luckily it was really nice wheater, so we just sat at a café, shopped a little and then went to an Italian restaurant, which happened to be my mother’s favorite local restaurant. We shared a focaccia (I swear, for an appetizer that thing was huge) and all had a different kind of pizza. Mine was salami, ham and egg (with tomato sauce and mozzarella, obviously).
We did go home straight after that, my grandmother and great aunt aren’t the youngest anymore and we were already out for hours at this point.
Overal a pretty good day, especially on such a sad event. But I’m sure my mother would’ve wanted me to spend the day laughing with family instead of sulking in my apartment all day.

My grandmother is a very conservative christian woman.
last time I saw her (a few weeks ago) we were talking about shows and I rattled off a few I really liked at the time. She seemed intrigued by Our Flag Means Death and asked me what it was about. I told her it was about pirates and explain the premise, she said it sounded interesting.
a few days later she texted me, asking me to remind her of the title.
I haven't talked to her since then and I'm going to see her tomorrow.
I'm nervous and exited to hear if she actually watched it.
(In reality, I doubt she'd get passed the first episode)
