#my grandpa is a finnish stereotype

19, 21 and 30?
Thanks! :) (The ask game here!)
19: A fact about your personality
Apparently I'm a walking example of the Savonian tribe stereotypes lol
No but, I find the Finnish tribe stereotypes super fascinating, and I myself am 2/4 Savonian (and I was born and have grown up here), 1/4 Ostrobothnian and 1/4... Laplandish? How is that said in English even? (Like, my grandpa's roots are in Lapland but not related to Sami people etc.) Anyway, it's fun to read about there stereotypes because Savonian and Ostrobothnian do collide a bit, and somehow I'm both and have traits of them both XD
Wikipedia says this about Savonians:
The stereotypical Savonian is talkative, easy-going, jolly and humorous, occasionally even to an offensive degree. Traditionally, the Savonians have often been considered to be "sneaky" and "mendacious." However, recent research has shown that this infamy is largely due to misunderstandings caused by the traditional Savonian social indirectness.
And that is 100% how I am too. Like, I'm so Savonian it hurts :D And then the article about Ostrobothnian stereotype says "The stereotypical Ostrobothnian is brave, calm and dependable." and I relate to that one too. It definitely runs in the family, and I can see how different my dad's family is vs. my mom's family :D (My mom's whole family has been living in Savo area for hundreds of years and it shows.)
---
21: What I love most about myself
Hmm, I'm a loveless aro and that also means I am unable to love even myself. But I do appreciate myself and I'd say the thing I like about myself the most is... maybe my worldview? Or is that a too broad term? Okay maybe I'll se my sense of humour. I really like my sense of humour and I actually do think I'm funny, but it might be only because my sense of humour matches my sense of humour. So I am very biased :D
---
30: What I hate the most about work/school
Early mornings. My school currently mostly starts at 9am which is already much better than when my horse job started at 7:50am, but it's still very very early to me nevertheless. So whenever I have a job or am studying, most of my freetime goes into battling with my sleeping schedule. I have 2 days off and I have already managed to completely mess up the whole system. It's very tiring in the end because I know better, but my brain doesn't listen. I dream of going to bed early, of having enough sleep at night, but always end up into bed thinking "I wish I managed to get into bed 2-3 hours earlier".
If I one night manage to do so, I feel like a winner, but I also know it's just one night and it's not going to stick. Every evening it's a battle. Especially every morning I swear to go to bed early cos I'm so tired, but then I get the ADHD "power surge" as I call them right when I should go to sleep, and suddenly everything is fun and I'm not tired. And then I regret again because I went to bed too late.
In a long run it's just... exhausting. I think it sometimes even stresses me out because I WANT TO GO TO BED EARLY TO GET ENOUGH SLEEP but I'm unable to, because so many distractions and executive dysfunction. Turning off my PC and stuff doesn't work because then I get so understimulated I can't sleep because of that. So definitely the maintining of my sleeping schedule is what I hate the most about work or school, because it just never works out. Never has. I was allowed to decide over mine after turning 14 or so, and it's been nothing but this ever since. (And being told to go to bed is not an option either, I hate being told to do things.)

Under the cut are some explanations for some words, phrases and translation choices from the above translation and some previous ones.
isäpappa (”daddy-o”) This is quite a cosy thing to call a dad. ’Pappa’ by itself means a geezer/grandpa or any elder male, if they are sensitive about being called old it’s an insult, if not it’s kind of cute and friendly. Then there’s also Muumipappa.
hyvää yritin, priimaa tuli (tried for a good one, ended up with premium quality) ’Nailed it’ is a bit difficult to translate, we have ’naulan kantaan’([hit] the nail in the head) in Finnish that’s similar in phrase (about nailing), but only means you are right about something, not about excelling in anything except knowing. Looking at cases I found of when ’nailed it’ is said in English, in Finnish they’d be a bit more specific about the situation, there’s really no good general phrase for that that I could think of. So with this translation, Sans spends some time thinking of a word that’s good enough, but the result is way better than what he thought he’d get with this amount of effort, hence the phrase.
siisti (cool, lit. clean/neat/tidy) Other words that are used in Finnish in a similar way to ’cool’ in English would be f.ex ’makee’/’magee’ (lit. sweet), ’pähee’ (this one doesn’t seem to have any double-meaning), and looks like the younger generation is using ’viilee’ (lit. cool in temperature) these days too. Out of these options I wanted to use one Papyrus can say too without it sounding too ooc, ’pähee’ and ’magee’ are way too slangy for him, but the others might show up in his lines later.
Look around you! I didn’t translate this book on purpose, while Finnish television has a lot of British comedies (with subtitles) and some of them are quite popular too, I don’t think that one ever made it here. Also reading something you’re interested in in a different language is a good way to learn the language. Following how the Finnish society works, the brothers seem to now be somewhere around the age (13-17?) where they should already be learning English and Swedish, and possibly some third language as well (I had to choose between French and German when I was 10, I heard some schools have Russian and Spanish options too). For the sake of becoming normal people with at least average basic skills, the brothers should know at least some English and Swedish, the same way they should know how to count, read, write, and f.ex draw a flower when asked; Everyone’s had art classes in elementary school, and those who never draw afterwards eventually forget most of it, but even they can still draw a recognisable stick-figure flower if needed (as long as they’re able to hold a pen at least).
sikasiisti (super/very cool, lit. pig clean) The word for ’pig’ amplifies an adjective that comes after it. Other slangy amplifiers are ’törkeen siisti’(super cool, lit. so clean it’s outrageous), ’sairaan siisti’(super cool, lit. so clean it’s sick), and one with a specific swear word that’ll come up some other day. To those of you who know the internet term ’pig disgusting’, Finnish has written records of different pig-amplified phrases since at least the 1980’s, so they shouldn’t be related. Though ’sikaällö’ does work in Finnish too.
Supervarovainen (Super careful) ’Super’ has the same amplifying effect as ’sika’ above, but is closer to book Finnish since it exist in a similar role in some Finnish words that don’t have a ’more Finnished’ word available, such as ’supersankari’(superhero), ’supermarket’, and ’superkuu’(supermoon). Proper book Finnish has several amplifying words available f.ex ’erittäin’, ’todella’, ’kovin’, ’hyvin’, ’sangen’, and ’kertakaikkisen’, some of which are already in use there too, ’super’ is just cuter there.
maalaisjärki (common sense, lit. countryside sense) While the countryside folk are regarded as more conservative and less educated/cosmopolitan than the people in the city areas, they also have the stereotype of having down-to-earth thinking, and not making things unnecessarily complicated, hence this word.
Halojaa/Haloo (Hello[on the phone]) These two are mostly phone-only words that aren’t really used when answering a phone, but when there’s disruptions and the speaker wants the other side to know that they can’t hear them, sort of a placeholder word when you need to make noise for the other side. This can lead to a chain of ’haloo’ being said from both sides until both think they can hear well enough to continue the call. Back before mobiles people would usually answer the phone with the family name of the household. In mobile times, this is only for the unknown numbers, and in work situations the company name followed with your full name. If it’s someone you know, it’s more common to answer with just ’moi’ or other basic greeting, since you already know who calls and they already know who they’re calling. ’Haloo’ is also used in a very specific phrase ’hei haloo!’(oh, come on!), it’s something a rebelling teenager might say to their parents when the parents don’t ”get” something.
Kultaseni (Darling, lit. my golden one) Finnish is apparently one of the few languages that refer to a dear person as being actually made of gold. ’Kulta’(gold) is basically less strong a word than ’rakas’(one that’s loved) when it comes to the raw feeling behind the word, the meaning is more of a ’you are precious’ than ’you are important’. But depending on how you use it it can be just as strong, people get to pick the pet names they want to give to their loved ones and that way add their own meaning there.

Always so much fun to read about the Finnish "tribes" and how different the (old) stereotypes are from each other.
For example, I was born in East Finland (and have lived here my whole life), but I'm still 1/4 Ostrobothnian (West Finland) and 1/4 from Lapland, but I don't really know anything about the latter (my grandpa died already back in the 70s, and I was born in the early 90s), but I have always felt strongly drawn to the Ostrobothnian stereotype and I also really love the dialect.
So about those stereotypes, Wikipedia says this:
The stereotypical Savonian is talkative, easy-going, jolly and humorous, occasionally even to an offensive excess. Traditionally, the Savonian people have often been considered as "sneaky" and "mendacious." However, recent research has shown that this infamy is largely due to misunderstandings caused by the traditional Savonian social indirectness.
Then add the Ostrobothnian stereotype in the mix:
There are stereotypes that Ostrobothnians are brave, calm and reliable.
And you really get my personality in a nutshell. But I have to add that on a Finnish scale, a Savonian might seem very easy-going, talkative and jolly but for foreign people we're probably still as introverted and quiet as any other Finnish person too :DDD
That "'sneaky' and 'mendacious'" part, I think, points at several Fnnish saying. One of them goes something like "When having a conversation with a Savonian, the listener is in charge." and I'm not sure if it comes across properly in English, but the Finnish version means that if you are not paying attention and really focusing on the conversation, you will easily misunderstand whatever the Savonian is saying, as we love to ramble, but there's also all kinds of other nonsense and pointless stuff between the important points.
Another saying is that a Savonian always says "Suattaapi olla tai suattaapa olla olematta..." which means "Might be or might not be... (who knows.)", and THAT means that you're never really getting a straight, proper answer from a Savonian. That's where another saying, "Crooked like a Savonian.", comes from, I think. Most of these are old sayings that still live and are often used humorously, tho.
But it's really interesting to compare e.g. Savonians and Ostrobothnians to each other because I can see how my mom, whose whole family is from Savo areas, are a lot like that. They rather talk themselves out of situations instead of really facing others when there are disagreements.
But then my dad's side is exactly like that Ostrobothnian stereotype. They are reliable and honest, they have always said what bugs them (often loudly) and none of them has ever been able to just shut up and hide. Unlike my mom's side. Of course this is not JUST the tribes but also what both families have learnt from their ancestors and whatnot, but I still think it's interesting how even the personalities can be this different. I myself lean clearly more to the Ostrobothnian direction.
Loyalty and honesty is the number one priority to me and I have never really liked the Savonian way of not admitting your errors. I saw this a lot at work and schools too, no one admitting doing something when clearly it was one of us. Which is why I often went "Well it surely was not me." which probably sounds stupid because that's what everyone says, but it just felt important to me.
Sometimes I maybe put my coworkers in a bad situation when they started to talk badly about something they did not know I had done, and then I would just go "Well that was actually me." I know it is very embarrassing to talk shit "behind" someone's back and then notice that the person is actually right there in front of you, but for me it was just important to say it out loud. Since it was bothering the person so much, why not discuss is with me face-to-face then? I mean, these things bother me way more if I know something they don't know I know. So I want it out of the way, and cleaning air that way can help. Sometimes I think I did that on purpose as sometimes a coworker might now have been looking for the guilty but just would say something "Who the hell does something like this???" and the face they do when you go "Me :)" lmao (But now I'm also starting to understand why this one particular coworker always seemed to hate me :DDD)
