~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you two arrived at the wedding, you realized it was at a huge church that was decorated in diamond chandeliers, roses, and white marble floors.
You and Satoru were running a bit late and noticed everyone had already taken their seats. Thankfully, you found enough space for you and Satoru to sit in the middle row.
You wrap your arm around him. "Follow my lead."
And so he does.
As you're walking to your spot, you decide to also look around to see who's here. All you see are distant family members and a couple of people you don't recognize. Your eyes land on your ex best friend or at least you thought she is used to be your best friend.
When you two were very young her parents grew very close to yours. She always thought she was better than you and never wanted to play with you and when she did she would manipulate you into being her little slave and into giving her your toys. You obeyed her without a fight because all you ever wanted was to play with her, but once you developed a mind of your own, you realized what she was doing and told her off and distanced yourself.
That same girl was glaring at you with so much evil tucked inside her soul. Her eyes land on Satoru and you knew she was jealous.
You will admit she's beautiful, but her soul is the one of the ugliest— if not thee ugliest thing you've ever seen.
Your arm squeezes tighter around Satoru, unconsciously being protective of him. He noticed and looks at you, then the direction you're looking. His eyes land on the girl and he sort of realizes what's going on, but he's still a bit confused, but none the less reassures you.
"Y/n." Satoru whispers, making you look up at him. "It's okay."
The fact that he reassured you without even fully understanding what's going on made you fuzzy inside.
Your strength around his arm eases and a smile graces your lips. "I know."
When you're about to sit down, you realize you're about to sit right next to your grandparents.
"Y/n, you made it." Your grandmother smiles.
"Of course I did." You smile and hug her. "How are you?"
Before she can respond, your grandfather peers behind your grandmother. "Y/n! How've you been?"
"I've been great ojichan, how about you?" Your smile is radiant as you greet your grandparents. They were always so kind and full of life.
"Who's that handsome young man next to you?" Your grandmother interrupts your grandfather before he can respond.
They also have a huge habit of interrupting one another, yet don't get mad at each other for it. I guess they just love one another all that much.
They were high school sweethearts and you're so surprised they made it this far with each other. You knew they'd still be together even if death tried to get in the way because their souls would meet in the afterlife. You're sure of it and you can't help but crave such love.
Sometimes you wonder how your father became so closed off with such loving parents like his. You'd at least expect him to be loving towards you, but you're in disbelief if he even looks your direction nowadays. You wish you had parents like your grandparents.
"I'm Gojo Satoru, y/n's boyfriend. It's lovely to meet you." Satoru bows his head.
"You have beautiful eyes, Gojo. I've never seen anything quite like them and I've met a lot of people at my old age." Your grandmother says.
"Thank you and please, call me Satoru." He replies.
Satoru didn't wear his usual shades because of the formal event, so you could see his eyes perfectly.
"Y/n, you found yourself quite the charmer." Your grandfather says with a smile on his face, pleased with your boyfriend.
You roll your eyes. "Yeah, yeah. He's perfect or whatever."
Satoru can't help but laugh. He knew you were half pretending that you were jealous by how much they were praising him. "Obaasan, have you seen my parents?" You change the topic.
"They're all the way in the front." She points toward the front.
You turn around and and scan the seats in front of you till you finally spot your parents.
"You're going to have to wait to greet them." You whisper to Satoru and he nods.
Suddenly wedding music fills your ears and everyone is standing up.
Satoru helps your grandmother stand up with one hand in hers and the other on her back. The sight is so heartwarming, it makes your heart physically ache. He really is a keeper.
You look back at the aisle and see your aunt in a beautiful white kimono, holding a wagasa in one hand while her other hand was wrapped around her soon-to-be-husband's arm who was wearing a black kimono as they walked down the aisle.
You were so happy for your aunt, especially since she was in an abusive relationship a few years ago, but this new man seems different. Every time you see them together they're always laughing and smiling unlike when she was with her ex husband. They never talked nor looked in each others direction when you saw them together.
You wonder if you'll ever be able to commit to someone so much that you'd be willing to marry them. To you, marriage was a very scary thing.
After they declare to love one another till death due them part, everyone gets up to go to the dining hall.
You take this as an advantage for Satoru to greet your parents. You point them out to him so he can see how they look like first.
A wave of anxiety rushes past him once he knows who your parents are.
"Toru, there is literally nothing to worry about. Just greet them the way you did with my grandparents and I promise you'll have their hearts." Your instructions were clear, yet soothing. You tugged your lips into a genuine smile as he looked down at you and suddenly all his fears vanished into thin air.
Before you can even ask if he's ready, Satoru grabs your hand and walks towards you parents. Your parents realize this and fix their gaze onto you and the 6'3 man beside you.
"Hello, you must be y/n's parents. I've heard so much about you both. I'm Gojo Satoru, y/n's boyfriend. I'm very pleased to finally meet you." Satoru bows with a charming smile decorating his lips. The smile that traps you into loving him.
With a smile like that, he could definitely make anyone love him.
༺ ♡ ༻
Satoru ended up sitting next to you with your parents and other close relatives. He suddenly turned into a comedian, making them all laugh and have a good time. You were so happy your parents ended up liking him.
You just finished eating, so you decide to go to the bathroom to touch up your lipstick.
"I'm going to the bathroom." You whisper into his ear. He nods and you leave.
Once you entered the bathroom, Satoru noticed the girl that was glaring at you earlier, enter the bathroom.
You're touching up your makeup as she enters the restroom. You sigh in annoyance and continue to apply your lipstick, already knowing she isn't here to actually use the bathroom.
She looks around to make sure no one else is around. She checks the stalls and saw they were empty. Once she knew no one was around, she unmasked her true colors.
"Oh, y/n, I haven't even been in here for a second and you're already annoyed with me?" She pretends to pout.
You ignore her and continue to apply lipstick. You've dealt with this for years, so it's been tougher for her to break your thick skin.
"Who's your little boyfriend? He sure seems like the charmer." She continues to pry.
You cap your lipstick and continue to ignore her.
Don't engage y/n. What good will that do? It's your aunt's wedding and you came here to have a good time. Don't let her ruin that for you.
"How big is his dick?"
Your eyes widen and your heart begins to thump in rage. The grip you have on your lipstick seems likes it's about break as your knuckles turn white.
You walk towards the door to avoid conflict. You open it, but she slams it closed with her hand. Her face was dangerously close to yours and you could feel her breath on your ear. You were well aware she wanted you to look her and get some sort of reaction out of you, but you refused.
"I'm just wondering because if I were with him, I'd waste absolutely no time sleeping with him. Fuck, we wouldn't even have to be together. You're gonna have to share a man like that."
Calm down.
"I wanna taste. No fair."
Calm.
"I bet he's so good in bed."
Down.
"He's definitely next on my fuck list."
Your ears begin to ring and your vision turns red as your heart thumps faster. You grab her by the collar and slam her against a wall with her feet barely touching the ground all in one swift movement.
She's smirking, satisfied with the reaction she got out of you. "Still taking things so seriously, aren't we, y/n? He has such a pretty face. Don't tell me you think you're the only person he's slept with."
You and Satoru both took each other's virginity that night. If Satoru was just some lousy player then Ieiri would've warned you or you would've found out for yourself because players aren't difficult to figure out. Plus the only women in his life are his mother, Ieiri, and you.
This fucking cunt knows absolutely nothing about him.
"I'm going to fucking kill you." Your voice was barely above a whisper, but she heard crystal clear.
She snickers. "You're not gonna do sh—" before she could finish her false sentence you punched her in the face so hard, her head slammed again the wall.
Her body lost its balance, but before she could fall to the ground, you grabbed her hair, digging your fingernails into the flesh her scalp and dragged her. Once you let go, the force caused her to fall into one of the bathroom stalls, slamming her head yet again with her ass falling into the toilet.
You stand there while your body slowly begins to shake. You look down at your hands with wide eyes when your eyes are met with bloody fingertips.
You take a few deep breaths, trying to calm yourself before you go back to the dining hall.
You wash your hands and leave.
The moment his eyes land on you, he could tell something was wrong. He knew he had a bad feeling when he saw that girl enter the bathroom after you.
Once you're sat down he whispers, "Are you okay?"
"I-I'm fine. Just feeling a bit sick." You lie and the fact you haven't even bat an eye at him shows that what you were saying was nothing but a lie.
"Y/n, are you alright?" You heard your mother's voice.
You look up at her. "Yes, I'm just not feeling well. I think I'm going to have to leave early with Satoru." You respond.
"Of course. We understand and we hope you feel better." You heard your father say.
You look up at him and give him a fake smile. "Thanks, otosan."
And with that you and Satoru left. The car ride was silent because he wasn't sure if you wanted to talk or needed space.
Once he parks in front of your house, you open the door before he could open it for you.
You still haven't looked at him.
Satoru chases after you and when you're one foot in the house, he grabs your arm. "What's wrong?"
"I don't wanna talk about it." You don't even turn your head to look at him, completely shutting him out.
"I'm not leaving until I know what's wrong. I can't stand the fact that you're hurt and I don't know why." He says truthfully.
Those words finally break the dam of tears you've been holding back against.
You fall onto your knees and begin to cry into your palms. You're still outside, so Satoru lifts you by your thighs. You wrap your legs around him and wrap your arms around his neck as you head lay your head in the crook of his neck.
His arms are tucked underneath your thighs as he walks inside the house and shuts the door. He uses one hand to shut the door and lock it.
When you're finally inside he sets you down on the couch.
"Tell me everything."
"I'm s-sorry." Is all you can say as you cry continue to cry into your palms.
Satoru grabs your wrists and gently removes your hands from your face and when he does, he noticed them shaking along with the rest of your body. "It's okay. Calm down and then explain to me." His words are smooth like silk and you can't help but obey.
༺ ♡ ༻
"Slowly breathe in." You do as he says as Satoru begins to count. "One, two, three, four, five." He slowly says. "And breathe out. One, two, three, four, five." You follow his pace and feel your body beginning to ease.
You changed into a tank top and shorts to cool down. You're sitting on his lap with your head leaning against his chest as he repeats this process a few times. As he counts his long and cold slender fingers tap on your sensitive warm skin with each passing number. The sensation was therapeutic against your skin. His other hand is holding a glass of water in case you need it.
"Can you tell me what happened now?"
You sigh and finally give in. "My ex best friend, if you can even call her that, ever since we were little she always viewed me as a threat and some sort of competition. She would easily manipulate me because I was so young and vulnerable. All I ever wanted was to play dolls or whatever kids do at that age. Once I got older, I realized this, so one day I finally decided to tell her off and rarely spoke to her again after that. The only times we ever speak is when she's trying to set me off." With all the talking you did, you take a second to catch up breath and prepare yourself for what you're about to say.
"When she sets me off it's usually because it's something specific that I have that she doesn't, so when she saw you with me..." You exhale deeply to calm yourself. "She followed me into the bathroom and told me how much she wants to fuck you and how she will fuck you." You don't even have to look at Satoru. You could feel the rage boiling out of him.
"But what really set me off was the way she accused you of being a player just cause you have pretty face. I became so defensive...I don't know what came over me." You head droops in disappointment. "I slammed her head against a wall...twice. I dragged her so hard that once I let go she flew into a toilet." As much as this was supposed to be a heart to heart conversation, you and Satoru can't help but laugh at the last part you said.
That's why you love him. You two could laugh no matter the situation.
"A toilet?" He repeats. "I'm surprised she didn't get a concussion."
"Stop it." You jokingly push him, making him chuckle. "But in all seriousness..." you hold your hands out in front of you and notice them gently shake. "I feel terrible after doing that to her just because I was blinded by rage...it makes me feel like I'm no better than your father if I'm capable of hurting someone like." You say the last part in a whisper, but he still heard.
"Are you serious?" Satoru asks as he sets the water glass down. He palms your cheeks with both hands, squishing them together gently as he forces you to look at him. "There is absolutely nothing you can use to compare yourself to my father. You're nothing like him. Never ever compare yourself to him again. Do you understand?"
You nod with your cheeks still being squished. "And that girl deserved everything you did to her after all the shit she's done to you. She should be lucky you let her go with just that because if I was in your position and someone mentioned wanting to fuck you even once, that fuckward would be damn lucky they survived after I beat them to a pulp."
"Fuckward? That's new." You joke, your cheeks still being squished.
Satoru smiles and pecks your lips. "Shut up."
༺ ♡ ༻
That night you texted your parents if Satoru could spend the night. They said yes, but told you they don't want their 15 year old daughter getting pregnant.
You rolled your eyes at their response. You showed the message to Satoru who was sitting on your bed with you and he laughed.
"You're lucky they like you or they wouldn't have let you spend the night." You say, putting your phone down.
"Yeah, I guess I am." He replies with a smirk on his face.
"We haven't heard anything about her." You mention. Satoru looks at you confused, so you clarify. "The ex best friend."
"Oh yeah, why don't you think she told anyone?" He asked.
"Because her ego is too high and she would die of humiliation if someone found out I beat the crap out of her. She probably touched herself up with makeup and will put an ice pack on her head when she got home, I don't know."
"Can't say she doesn't deserve it." He replies, making you laugh. He knew that was the first time you've ever hurt someone like that. He could tell by the way you reacted to the whole situation. "I have to stop by my house to make sure my mom takes her antidepressant. Do you wanna come with?"
This makes you knit your brows in confusion. "But you said—"
"I know." He cuts you off. "You can stay in the car. I'll be quick."
You nod in agreement.
༺ ♡ ༻
Satoru parks his car and this is your first time seeing his house. It was huge to say the least, but you weren't surprised because you knew he came from a wealthy family.
"I'll be back in a minute." He kisses your cheek and leaves the car. Once he's at the front door, he rummages through his pockets and lets out a frustrated groan. You laugh because you knew he forgot his keys when you saw the way he frantically searched his pockets.
He knocks on the door and after a few seconds, an older woman opens the door. She was beautiful even though her eye bags were present and she was still in her pj's. He hair fell all the way to her chest with small knots in them.
She was so beautiful regardless and looked just like Satoru. Or rather he looked just like her.
She had hair as white as snow just like his, but brown eyes instead of the sky.
His mom peaked behind his shoulder, making your eyes meet with hers. Anxiety flows through you, but you try to play it off by giving her a warm smile.
Satoru looks back and sees you. He waves and you wave back and with that he finally gets inside and closes the door.
Satoru's pov
"Who was that girl?" His mother asks.
"My girlfriend." Satoru replies, walking towards the medicine cabinet.
"She's very pretty." His mother says, taking a seat at the dining table.
"Believe me. I know." He pulls out his mother's antidepressant.
"I'm sorry I can't greet her, Toru." You and his mother are the only people who call him that. Her voice is full of disappointment.
"Don't beat yourself up about it, okasan." Satoru takes out a pill. "She's a very understanding person."
"Maybe one day, I'll be able to." She says.
Satoru hands her mother the pill and a glass of water. "I know one day you'll be strong enough to. Maybe that day isn't today, but one day."
His mother smiles. "No wonder you've seemed so much more joyful and full of life. Not to mention you're out way more often than before."
Satoru returns the smile. "She makes me really happy."
"Tell me more about her." His mother's face was full of curiosity and it made him happy that his mother wanted to know about you.
"Okay, but take your pill first and let's freshen you up while we talk."
༺ ♡ ༻
After 30 minutes you contemplated about knocking on the door. It can't take that long to give his mother medication or were you just being impatient?
Before you begin to cause an internal war with yourself, you see Satoru open the door and wave goodbye to his mother.
He shuts the door and walks towards the car. Once he opens it you immediately asked the question you've been wondering all this time. "What took you so long?"
He buckled his seat and looks at you with a smile. "Nothing."
That only makes you more curious, but you don't pry. "You're weird." You look out the window.
"Look who's talking." He starts the car.
You look back at him and squint your eyes in annoyance. "I'm not weird."
"Whatever makes you sleep at night, pretty girl."
"By the way, does anyone in your family have eyes like yours?" You randomly change the topic. After seeing his mom didn't have his eyes, you were curious.
"It's a special genetic in my clan that gets passed on very rarely. The last person that had it before me was about 100 years ago."
"Wow..." Satoru looks at you to see your shocked expression, making him let out a small chuckle. "No, seriously that's so cool."
"Eh." He shrugs his shoulders acting unimpressed by his rare genetics, but you could tell he was being cocky on purpose to piss you off.
"Don't." Is all you say, making him laugh as you cross your arms over your chest and face forward.
༺ ♡ ༻
Once you're back home, you face palm yourself. "You forgot to get spare clothes."
Satoru smirks and holds up a bag making you sigh in relief, but then a question crosses your mind. "Wait, how did I not see that earlier?"
"Because you're slow." He gently flicks your forehead making you massage the spot.
"Whatever."
༺ ♡ ༻
Satoru changes into grey sweats and a white tank top in front of you as if you weren't even there. You pretend to scroll through your phone, but can't pull your eyes away when he's just in his sweats. They're hanging right below is torso and his V line is practically begging you to stare. His body was fit with light muscles poking from every part of his body.
"Y'know, if you keep undressing me with your eyes, I'm gonna catch a cold." You lifted your eyes to see Satoru watching you with a smirk tugging his lips.
Shit, I was staring too long.
You turn away in embarrassment and hide your face in your phone so he doesn't see your vibrant pink cheeks. "I don't know what you're talking about." You murmur.
Satoru laughs, making you even more embarrassed. "Sure."
༺ ♡ ༻
"First we have to remove our makeup." You hand him a small cotton pad. "You apply makeup remover on it, but you don't want to add too much." You show him how much to pour. "That much is good."
Satoru nods and applies it to his. "Like this?" He asks and you nod.
"What do you use to take off your concealer?"
"Makeup wipes." He says, making you wince. "What?" He's confused by your reaction.
"Those burn my eyes." You reply as you take off your makeup.
"Mine too." He admits, also taking off his makeup. Once he reaches his forehead, he holds his bags back by using his hand.
You notice this and stop him by grabbing his wrist. "Wait." You grab a light blue hair tie that sat on your counter, that almost matched his eyes if they weren't so many other shades of blue. You sit on the counter in front of him and hook your legs around his to bring him closer, putting the hair tie around your fingers.
"Lean down." He does as he's told. "Don't hold them back with your hands anymore. It can make your hair oily. Hair ties and headbands are better. Since I only have one headband you have to use this in the meantime until we buy you one." You tie his bangs and once your done, his bangs are in a tiny ponytail right on top his head.
You laugh causing Satoru to stretch to his full height so he can see his hair. Once he's met with the tiny ponytail resting on top his head, he chuckles. "Haha, very funny."
"Obviously since you laughed." You joke. "Also I have an extra makeup remover bottle and cotton pads. I'll give it to you."
Of course you will.
"After that you apply this solution everywhere on your face." You instruct him as you guide him through your skincare routine.
You take out your jade rollers and show him how to use them. You show him the other few steps into your routine and finally...
"Are these...Hello Kitty face masks?" He asks, holding the packet of Hello Kitty themed face masks.
"Yep! They're so cute, right?" You light up like a child, causing Satoru to cover a hand over his mouth to conceal his laughter. You glare at him. "Don't make fun of me, asshole."
You guide him how to apply the face mask and he tries to follows your instructions.
His mask started to crinkle and fold in his hands. "Satoru, you're messing it up." You take the face mask from him and fix it. You once again sit on the counter in front of him, hooking your legs behind his. "Down." You ordered and he did as he was told.
"You're like a puppy." You joke as he bends to your height. "A helpless little puppy." He sticks his tongue at you and you do it back.
You help him apply the face mask and once you're done, you can't help but burst into laughter. He looked so cute with his little ponytail and Hello Kitty face mask.
"What are you laughing at?" Satoru asks with a smile even though he knows perfectly well what you were laughing at.
"You." A smile rests on your face. Satoru looks down at your lips and gently kisses you and of course you kiss him back.
You and your boyfriend kissing in Hello Kitty face masks? Now that's a first.
After you two are done with your mini make out session, you pull away knowing it will lead into more if you don't stop now. Not that you mind, but you didn't wanna ruin the face masks. An idea pops into your head and so you pull out your phone and snap a picture of him without giving him time to process what you were doing.
You look at the picture and burst laughter. "Thanks for the new wallpaper."
"That's not fair." Satoru whined and tried to snatch the phone, but you dodge it.
He tried again, but you dodge again. Satoru leans in, trapping you. You quickly shove your phone in your shirt between your tits.
It's stupid of you to think that will stop him.
He looks down at your tits, then back up at you with a smirk graced upon his moisturized lips.
Oh no.
Within the blink of an eye, his hand is down your shirt, trying to get your phone.
"Toru!" You shout, trying not to laugh.
"Give it, pretty girl~~." He rummages underneath your shirt, but you press a hand on your tits so he doesn't get it.
"You're such a perv, Toru! You don't even care about the picture! You just wanna touch my tits!" You scold your boyfriend.
"Maybe." He shrugs with the same mischievous grin tugging on his lips.
This is how you and Satoru would joke around.
Any normal couple would definitely think you two were weird, but did either of you care?
Not in the slightest.
If there is one thing you knew about Satoru, it's how ticklish he is, so with your free arm you tickle his ribcage, his weakest spot.
Satoru jolts from the sudden movement, his body forcing him to back away.
You take this as your opportunity to run out of the bathroom as you try to contain your laughter.
You heard Satoru's footsteps so you rush to the dining table.
"Come back here you little shit!" You hear your boyfriend yell from behind you. Once your at the dining table you rush to the opposite side.
Once you're there, you see Satoru standing on the other side of the table. "How are you going to get me now, Toru? The table is in the way so—"
You couldn't even finish you sentence as Satoru runs around the table, trying to get to you.
You quickly run before he can get you, but you'd be lying if you said he almost didn't catch you.
Curse those long legs of his.
You're now on opposite sides on the couch. He's carefully watching your movements and you do the same for him.
"Give up." You say with a smirk, trying to mask your nervousness that he might catch you.
"You first." He smirks back, but his is confident unlike yours.
"Fuck you."
"Already have."
You look at the staircase leading to upstairs. If you're quick enough you can run upstairs and lock your door and let him stay out here until he admits defeat.
You make a run for it and this time Satoru's steps are faster and more persistent.
Shit.
You try to find a door to run to, but this house is too big to make a quick getaway.
You suddenly feel strong arms scooping your waist. "Gotcha!"
"Damnit!" You tilt your head up and glare at the man above you. "I for sure thought I'd win this time."
"Maybe you would've if you weren't so slow." He teases with a smile.
You stick your tongue at him and he does it back.
༺ ♡ ༻
You're back to the bathroom with Satoru and thankfully he didn't make you delete the photo and you took a couple more photos together.
"While I let the face mask sit, I brush my teeth in the meantime." You put toothpaste on your toothbrush while Satoru rummages through his bag.
"Y/n..?"
"Hm?" You look at him through the mirror by the tone of his voice.
"I forgot my tooth brush."
You sigh and look through your cabinets. "There should be an extra one here somewhere...found it." You take the toothbrush that's still in the packaging and give it to Satoru. "Who's the slow one now?" You flick his forehead.
"Ow..." He pouts, massaging the spot you flicked. "You flicked me way harder than I flicked you."
"I know." You respond and go back to brushing your teeth.
CHAPTER I
————————
I was seven years old when my mother passed away, I was nine when my grandfather went into a coma; four months later my father had chosen to take the only man who ever cared for him, off of life support. When I was twelve my cat ran away, I found him beaten to death presumably by the neighborhood kids. Soon after my fourteenth birthday my grandmother had gotten hit by a car trying to pick up my younger brother from school. I was pretty used to the overgrowing grief in my life; none of my friends ever stayed, my family members died left and right, my pets my little crushes never liked me back. My life felt like the universe hated me. That was until my first year of high school, It had been a few months since my grandmother passed. I was living with my dad, brother and old sister.
We had two pets, a dog and a cat. Every now and then when I'd stare at Miley for long enough, I thought about Robin; god I felt so bad when I found her, her once grey fur was caked with dried blood. Her big green eyes stared at me begging for me to help her or at least take her out of her misery. I laid there holding her decaying body for hours, I sobbed into the crevasse of her neck. I went home later that day after burring her in the woods behind our home. I walked into my house covered in dried blood, in my hands was a ball of once fluffy grey cat hair. I sobbed, running into my older sisters arms.
"Y/N? what happened? baby look at me" I just resting my head on her shoulder sobbing, gripping the back of her white tank with my blood crusted hands. I'd think about that day when I'd stare into Miley's bright blue eyes, she was a white and brown cat. God she's a sweetheart, Robin was monstrous. She tore up whatever she could, she'd piss in your shoes if she didn't like you. One time Mackenna brought over a guy, slept with him but when he went to leave his shoes were both filled to the brim with piss, cat litter and a small toy that would squeak a "MEOW" when pressed on. I couldn’t stop laughing when my sister had told me about it. She cursed me, pushing me off of her bed. I landed on my back hitting the side of her dresser with my right palm while cracking up once again.
See my life wasn’t all that bad? Middle school wasn’t horrible. I made some friends that actually stayed. Lila, Katie and Richard. I loved them to death. I met Lila the first three months into ninth grade.
~flashback~
I walked into second period, we were about three months into school, I was exhausted from the night before. I studied my ass off for Mr.Brown's class. I was not prepared for that test but I had no choice. I had always gotten good grades until I started realizing I had feelings for some for the girls around me. I couldn't focus anymore; I felt wrong and gross with myself for looking at Madelyn Calvins like that or Jessi Smoldminor. I felt weird feelings when Jessi would come around but I tried brushing them off. I didn't have any friends after I came out to Jessi. She told everybody that I was a "fucking weird homo that you should stay away from." I spent the ride home on my bus that day sobbing, I screamed at myself when I got home that night.
"PLEASE JUST BE NORMAL!!" this all ended soon after I watched videos on youtube, realizing Jessi was probably just closeted. A mean internalized homophobic girl.
Anyways, I walked in sitting down by myself perusual, I didn't realize I wasn't alone until I felt a tap on my shoulder. A few weeks had gone by since the incident so I brushed it off as some person trying to bother me. "hey" I glanced over at the girl. She was probably 5'3, blonde hair and blue eyes. She had huge tits for a fourteen-fifteen year old. "hi" I said back questioning why this pretty girl was talking to me. I prepared myself for the worst until she just asked "do you have a pencil?"
four years later and we're the best of friends. When Brody Hunters broke up with her to go date Olivia Leone, she was devastated and I was by her side. When Jordan Micheals cheated on me I sobbed into her arms while she concealed me. We were inseparable. She never judged me for liking girls; even when I liked the most VULGAR girls.
I met Katie in tenth grade, she was in our gym class. She soon became our friend, we were known as THE trio at school. By tenth grade Katie had come out to us as Bisexual, obviously we supported her. Around this time I was already openly gay at school so I was usually told first when people were questioning. I had always gotten the “how did u know u were gay?” texts from girls I had never really spoken to. Or even the “I’m gay 4 u” comments on my posts. I always cringed but went along with it because I adored attention.
We met Richard because Lila and him started going out, they met at some fair in the Summer of late tenth grade. Ever since it has been the four of us. We graduated high school last week. I never thought I was going to make it but my friends really did help me. Before anybody asks, yes Katie and I DID have a small thing that went on but we both decided it was better off as friends.
We all got into the same College, University of Seattle. I was excited and so was Katie, her and I had become even closer since Richard and Lila. I suspected Katie was catching feelings for me again but I was NOT about to ruin our friendship again.
I walked over to my bedroom mirror staring into it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I've grown a lot since freshman year, I used to be 5'4, long light brown hair, blue eyes and small breasts. The girl that stared back at me was nothing like that. She was 5'6, medium length dark brown hair from being dyed so many times. Bright blue eyes, long eyelashes and plump lips. Double D's and a solid ass. I didn't realize how much I had progressed. I threw on a white tank top, some blue jeans and a hoodie. I slipped on my converse and grabbed my phone taking a quick pic of my room before heading out. Today was the last day of being at my house, I live a few hours away from my new school. Katie was on her way, I was shitting bricks. I was hoping to room with Katie but we got placed on different floors.
katieee my lovey - hi baeee i'm almost there 'kay? i wanna stop at panera after we get richie and lil
I adore Katie, I really do. She is a sweetheart, we did way too much together to ever truly be considered just friends but I saw her as a best friend just as much as a fuck buddy.
y/n - hiiii kk sounds good txt me when ur here i have smmmm shit to bring to ur car. gnna make mack and shawn help me ;(
katieee my lovey - okay my love ill come in and help too love u almost there xoxo
----------------------------------
I ran downstairs towards the kitchen grabbing out a juice box pushing the straw into it and sucking out the liquid. I sighed at the orangish liquid coming through the clear straw just as I heard somebody coming in.
"heyy mama" Katie said walking towards me placing a sloppy kiss onto my left cheek. "hi babe, ready?" I asked gesturing towards my stairs.
Katie and Mack helped me carry out my items while Shawn sat on the couch watching his cartoons. I rolled my eyes at his laziness while we strained our backs carrying the heavy boxes into Katie's car.
"i'm really nervous Katie" I said to her once we were in the car alone. I wish I was still eleven laying in Mack's bed while we snuggled and watched movies talking about her new boy crush on the week. I must've dozed off because when I opened my eyes we were at Panera, Richard and Lila in the back seat swapping spit as Katie pulled into the parking lot.
"we're here you fucking love birds, yuck you're making me loose my appetite!!" Katie snarled. I laughed unbuckling myself heading into the building. I knew Katie's older sister Dina, went to Seattle university but that was the only upper class man I had knew. I was nervous trying to get down as much of my BLT as I could.
Once back on the road, I heard the two in the back once again swapping spit, their mouths smacking until finally I turned around.
"guy's SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I yelled, the two looked at me laughing then turned back to eating one another's faces.
"you ok babe?" Katie asked.
"I dunno I just feel really off, I'm nervous ya'know?"
"you need to get laid" I couldn't help but laugh at Katie's stupid comment. She looked at me smirking, no no no no. I was not going to do that again. I turned my head quickly looking out the window. I could feel the head spreading between my legs when I recalled that night. We were thirty minutes away now, I'm sure a little reminiscing wouldn't hurt anybody....right?
~flashback~
I was distraught. The text message I had just gotten from my girlfriend of over a year and a half. The "i'm so sorry my baby please- i didnt mean to she just was there i was drunk!" I broke up with her right away running to Katie's house.
She opened up the doors, I ran in collapsing into her arms. "oh my- baby what happened c'mere." Katie scooped me up placing her on her bed, I sobbed loudly until Dina and some girl walked by the slightly ajar door. The girl with her had auburn hair, green eyes and was around 5'5. She was pretty, her freckles sprouted out, her green sweatshirt and dark brown pants snug nicely on her body. I was attracted immediately but too sad to talk to her. Around this time my body was growing, my breasts were now a solid C, my ass was fatter and my make up skills were getting better.
I glanced away from the door looking into the Katie's eyes, I couldn't help what I did anymore. I was sad and needed somebodies love. I pushed my lips against hers. I was the one facing towards the door so I was able to see through the small crack, the auburn haired girl watched for a few minutes as my hands rose up the back of Katie's shirt, unclipping her bra and cupping one of her breasts while continuing to kiss her. I saw her finally walk away then shutting my eyes so I'd be back into the moment with Katie.
Normally I would've gone to Lila to sob but Richard was over so they'd defiantly be busy. My hand lowered down Katie's pants rubbing her clit-
"we're here!!" I glanced over at Katie who had her hand on my thigh, I was soaked at this point and I needed her. The last time we had hooked up was a few months prior. Katie hadn't ever been with someone until after we first ever fucked, then she dated some girl but that didn't last long.
We all carried what we could to the front desk, I looked around seeing tons of newly adults crying while hugging their parents goodbye. My dad was at work today, he said he'd come down tomorrow and help me upack, but meanwhile I knew Dina,Katie, Richard and Lila would help.
"Hi name please" the woman said at the front desk, she was wearing a tight black blouse and a purple skirt.
"y/n" I said watching as she aggressively typed into the computer, the keys clacking gave me a sense of relief. It had reminded me of when my mother would be typing on her computer while I sat with Mackenna eating our grilled cheeses.
"Here you go hun! room 3476...." she handed me the keys, I heard her say something to Katie but I walked a few feet away analyzing the keys. I saw a girl walk up to me meanwhile my head still being down.
"AHH MY BABY!!!" I looked up just as the black haired girl wrapped her arms around my neck tightly. I realized it was Dina, all my tension left. I felt so much better knowing she was going to be here, behind her stood a 6'2 Asian guy and the auburn haired girl. I hadn't seen her in years.
Her hair was shorter, her green eyes more vibrant and her freckles more prominent. She smiled at me putting her hand behind her head, scratching the back of her neck.
"how have you been my love??" Dina asked pulling the man behind her closer up so she could introduce him.
"I've been okay! you? anddd who is this?" I asked smirking.
"I've been great thank you lovey! this is Jesse my boyfriend" she said back raised her eyebrows. I laughed pushing her shoulder just as Katie walked up next to me. She leaned her head on my shoulder, I felt her warm breath hitting my neck. Chills went down my spine, I could feel my thighs getting warm again.
"Oh hey Ellie" Katie said looking at the auburn haired girl. SHIT! that's her name I literally could not remember. "hey katie" she said glancing down at her feet shuffling them around.
"anyways babe I got room 2489, so not THAT far but far enough hah" Katie laughed while dragging me along.
"wait what's your room?" Ellie asked referring to me. I looked at her struggling to make eye contact..."oh uh 3476..."
"no way...that's my room...c'mon I'll show you to it" I followed the girl up to the elevator as Katie and the rest followed. I was assuming Richard and Lila would stay back so they could have a quickie.
"It's just right this way, they told me I was getting a roommate but I thought it was jus' gunna be some random senior" I nodded, Ellie glanced back at me raising an eyebrow at my quiet reply.
She opened the door which had revealed a medium sized room. One of the sides was completely empty aside from a dark oak bedroom set with a small side table. There was a twin sized mattress which I was assumed to be mine.
I placed my box onto the bed taking out my light grey sheets and dark grey comforter, I began placing it onto my bed just as Katie ran over stopping me...
"I got it baby, you just unpack the rest of your shit, 'kay?"
I started unpacking the other tow boxes I had brought in, Jesse and Dina pulled Ellie aside telling her something. i could hear the aggressive whispering as the two left the room. Leaving it to be Katie, Ellie and I. God I'm so uncomfortable.
The room had a small island counter with a stove, a microwave above that; a sink, and a medium sized refrigerator. A door was shut which I was assuming was a bathroom.
Katie had finished making the bed for me, she walked over to me hugging me, "I'm gonna go start unpacking my shit, here is my spare key for when you go get the rest of your stuff. Let's get dinner later, I'll text you around six. Love you" She said to me kissing my cheek.
She waved Ellie a goodbye, walking out the door slamming it shut. Oh shit she was mad mad.
"okay I have to know.....are you guys dating orrrr"
I looked over at Ellie dropping my beaver stuffed animal onto the bed, turning around to face the girl. "no." Was all I said. I didn't feel like explaining but I knew I'd have to eventually. "okay...uh well I gotta go to my girlfriend's so see ya after?"
Aw shit. she had a girlfriend.
I nodded turning back to what I was doing, I had lots to unpack.
an hour later
"fuck man" I said harshly breathing out as I threw my last box onto the floor. I opened it up taking out my last few pairs of jeans placing them into the bins under my bed. I walked over to the drawers on my side of the room opening them hoping for some empty space.
I looked down seeing a large light pink strap-on. I was just about done. I closed the drawers gagging. I quickly pulled out my phone snapping a picture.
"MY BABIESSS"
y/n - why is my roommate a strap-on lesbo.
*one attachment*
lila baby - LMAOAOAOOA BROOOO
katieee my lovey - IM CRYING NOOOOO
I laughed turning my phone off. This was going to be hard.
Quite 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.
i mentioned this but my grandfather passed away last week. he was 95. my grandmother died in february of 2021 and it's really something that he made it that long without her at his age. they were married 69 years and had 7 children and 21 grandchildren, as well as 11 great grandchildren now with two more on the way. his wake was wednesday night and the memorial mass and burial were yesterday.
my auntie cindy married my dad's oldest brother i believe 50 years ago now. they were high school sweethearts. she knew my grandparents since she was a child, so did the rest of her family for that matter. my grandmother or sometimes my father used to mention a boy in the neighborhood who had unfortunately died very young of a drug overdose. no one outright told me this but i put together when i got older that that was cindy's brother. this is to say of all the in laws that cindy was well acquainted with my family for the longest time, and my family with hers as well.
some months after my grandmother's death, that spring or early summer, cindy had sent out a letter to everyone recalling growing up around my grandmother and marrying into the family, maintaining that relationship for decades. she mentioned something her brother used to say that my grandmother would often quote when cindy wasn't around. she closed the letter with, "i just wanted you to know that i loved your mother like she was my own," which i think was always very evident. cindy's own mother had passed away somewhere over a decade earlier. 4 or 5 years ago diana and i were over her house with our mother, cindy referred to a picture of her mother in the kitchen and said "i talk to her all the time." she's not religious, if that makes it any different. she and everyone else in my family were raised catholic but if you ever get on the topic with her, she thinks the bible and christianity and everything are a load of bullshit. but regardless she does speak to a picture of her mother, which i think is pretty interesting. but i digress.
at the wake, there was a line to the coffin with my grandfather in it. cindy's a sociable person. i got in line behind someone i didn't know. a lot of family friends showed up. cindy came and started chatting her up and she introduced me, and then she told me she'd gotten in line about 6 times but shied away from actually paying her final respects. i was like, wanna do it with me? and she did. so we kneeled before the coffin and she caressed the rosary in his hands, and when we got up i mentioned how much i appreciated her letter in 2021, and it took her by surprise. she said she had wanted to read it as a eulogy at her mother-in-law's funeral but she and my other aunt ended up in a bad argument around it. neither of them are perfect, to be clear. that's not why i'm making this post and i don't plan to elaborate on that.
but anyway, after the burial yesterday everyone went to lunch. i could tell all of my dad's siblings appreciated having each other after both of their parents have died. last weekend my dad and his brother that he's closest to went out to lunch because both my mom and aunt thought they needed it, i know first hand my dad has been very down in the dumps about everything. but anyway, after lunch yesterday when cindy was saying goodbye to me, she rubbed my chin and said "thank you, that was so sweet of you to bring up the letter about connie last night. do you know you had me crying on the way home?"--i don't think i have ever seen cindy cry.
today i’m spiraling about the way pat and pran wrote a song together about both their known and semi-oblivious feelings for each other 🙃
i can't stop thinking about how in different circumstances they would have been high school sweethearts that make it through it all...
I hit the breaking point as a parent a few years ago. It was the week of my extended family’s annual gathering in August, and we were struggling with assorted crises. My parents were aging; my wife and I were straining under the chaos of young children; my sister was bracing to prepare her preteens for bullying, sex and cyberstalking. Sure enough, one night all the tensions boiled over. At dinner, I noticed my nephew texting under the table. I knew I shouldn’t say anything, but I couldn’t help myself and asked him to stop. Ka-boom! My sister snapped at me to not discipline her child. My dad pointed out that my girls were the ones balancing spoons on their noses. My mom said none of the grandchildren had manners. Within minutes, everyone had fled to separate corners. Later, my dad called me to his bedside. There was a palpable sense of fear I couldn’t remember hearing before. “Our family’s falling apart,” he said. “No it’s not,” I said instinctively. “It’s stronger than ever.” But lying in bed afterward, I began to wonder: Was he right? What is the secret sauce that holds a family together? What are the ingredients that make some families effective, resilient, happy? It turns out to be an astonishingly good time to ask that question. The last few years have seen stunning breakthroughs in knowledge about how to make families, along with other groups, work more effectively. Myth-shattering research has reshaped our understanding of dinnertime, discipline and difficult conversations. Trendsetting programs from Silicon Valley and the military have introduced techniques for making teams function better. The only problem: most of that knowledge remains ghettoized in these subcultures, hidden from the parents who need it most. I spent the last few years trying to uncover that information, meeting families, scholars and experts ranging from peace negotiators to online game designers to Warren Buffett’s bankers. After a while, a surprising theme emerged. The single most important thing you can do for your family may be the simplest of all: develop a strong family narrative. I first heard this idea from Marshall Duke, a colorful psychologist at Emory University. In the mid-1990s, Dr. Duke was asked to help explore myth and ritual in American families.“There was a lot of research at the time into the dissipation of the family,” he told me at his home in suburban Atlanta. “But we were more interested in what families could do to counteract those forces.” Around that time, Dr. Duke’s wife, Sara, a psychologist who works with children with learning disabilities, noticed something about her students.“The ones who know a lot about their families tend to do better when they face challenges,” she said. Her husband was intrigued, and along with a colleague, Robyn Fivush, set out to test her hypothesis. They developed a measure called the “Do You Know?” scale that asked children to answer 20 questions. Examples included: Do you know where your grandparents grew up? Do you know where your mom and dad went to high school? Do you know where your parents met? Do you know an illness or something really terrible that happened in your family? Do you know the story of your birth? Dr. Duke and Dr. Fivush asked those questions of four dozen families in the summer of 2001, and taped several of their dinner table conversations. They then compared the children’s results to a battery of psychological tests the children had taken, and reached an overwhelming conclusion. The more children knew about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned. The “Do You Know?” scale turned out to be the best single predictor of children’s emotional health and happiness. “We were blown away,” Dr. Duke said. And then something unexpected happened. Two months later was Sept. 11. As citizens, Dr. Duke and Dr. Fivush were horrified like everyone else, but as psychologists, they knew they had been given a rare opportunity: though the families they studied had not been directly affected by the events, all the children had experienced the same national trauma at the same time. The researchers went back and reassessed the children.“Once again,” Dr. Duke said, “the ones who knew more about their families proved to be more resilient, meaning they could moderate the effects of stress.” Why does knowing where your grandmother went to school help a child overcome something as minor as a skinned knee or as major as a terrorist attack? “The answers have to do with a child’s sense of being part of a larger family,” Dr. Duke said. Psychologists have found that every family has a unifying narrative, he explained, and those narratives take one of three shapes. First, the ascending family narrative: “Son, when we came to this country, we had nothing. Our family worked. We opened a store. Your grandfather went to high school. Your father went to college. And now you. ...” Second is the descending narrative: “Sweetheart, we used to have it all. Then we lost everything.” “The most healthful narrative,” Dr. Duke continued, “is the third one. It’s called the oscillating family narrative: ‘Dear, let me tell you, we’ve had ups and downs in our family. We built a family business. Your grandfather was a pillar of the community. Your mother was on the board of the hospital. But we also had setbacks. You had an uncle who was once arrested. We had a house burn down. Your father lost a job. But no matter what happened, we always stuck together as a family.’ ” Dr. Duke said that children who have the most self-confidence have what he and Dr. Fivush call a strong “intergenerational self.” They know they belong to something bigger than themselves. Leaders in other fields have found similar results. Many groups use what sociologists call sense-making, the building of a narrative that explains what the group is about. Jim Collins, a management expert and author of “Good to Great,” told me that successful human enterprises of any kind, from companies to countries, go out of their way to capture their core identity. In Mr. Collins’s terms, they “preserve core, while stimulating progress.” The same applies to families, he said. Mr. Collins recommended that families create a mission statement similar to the ones companies and other organizations use to identify their core values. The military has also found that teaching recruits about the history of their service increases their camaraderie and ability to bond more closely with their unit.Cmdr. David G. Smith is the chairman of the department of leadership, ethics and law at the Naval Academy and an expert in unit cohesion, the Pentagon’s term for group morale. Until recently, the military taught unit cohesion by “dehumanizing” individuals, Commander Smith said. Think of the bullying drill sergeants in “Full Metal Jacket” or “An Officer and a Gentleman.” But these days the military spends more time building up identity through communal activities. At the Naval Academy, Commander Smith advises graduating seniors to take incoming freshmen (or plebes) on history-building exercises, like going to the cemetery to pay tribute to the first naval aviator or visiting the original B-1 aircraft on display on campus. Dr. Duke recommended that parents pursue similar activities with their children. Any number of occasions work to convey this sense of history: holidays, vacations, big family get-togethers, even a ride to the mall. The hokier the family’s tradition, he said, the more likely it is to be passed down. He mentioned his family’s custom of hiding frozen turkeys and canned pumpkin in the bushes during Thanksgiving so grandchildren would have to “hunt for their supper,” like the Pilgrims. “These traditions become part of your family,” Dr. Duke said. Decades of research have shown that most happy families communicate effectively. But talking doesn’t mean simply “talking through problems,” as important as that is. Talking also means telling a positive story about yourselves. When faced with a challenge, happy families, like happy people, just add a new chapter to their life story that shows them overcoming the hardship. This skill is particularly important for children, whose identity tends to get locked in during adolescence. The bottom line: if you want a happier family, create, refine and retell the story of your family’s positive moments and your ability to bounce back from the difficult ones. That act alone may increase the odds that your family will thrive for many generations to come.
Go Go Karasuno: An Old Rival (Pt 2 )
THIS FIC IS 18+
Warnings: swearing
Word Count: 7,000+
A few days had passed since the practice match. You hated to admit it, but you thought about Keishin often.
He looked good.
Really REALLY good.
Like better than high school good.  He always looked nice but it was overshadowed by his complete desire to be an utter ass.
You sighed as you finished up a few emails to send off before you took your grandma to the hospital to visit your grandfather.
He was set to be discharged in a few days and then you would start the process of moving them to the elderly community. You had taken your grandmother to visit him daily as she would often have make him meals. He hated the hospital food. He said the flavor was lacking.
You had to laugh. The man had only ever eaten your grandmother's cooking since they married at a young age. He often complained or refused to eat any other food because it was never was good as his wife’s cooking.
You had to agree. Your grandma was an amazing cook.
You arrive at the hospital with your grandma in toe. She says her hellos to the staff as they all reciprocate the greetings. Your grandma was a complete sweetheart. She was loved and adored by everyone. She always helped when and where she could, volunteering wherever she was needed. You're actually surprised your grandfather managed to charm his way in to her life.
Your grandfather was a rowdy old man. Literally the opposite of your grandmother. He could be bitter and always liked a good argument. He was never outright mean to people, just very outspoken and upfront. He was a lot to handle.
You exit the elevator carrying the box of food your grandma had prepared. She told you she was preparing a meal for your grandfather's roommate as well. She said the man was just as insatiable as your grandfather. You imagined they were quite the duo.
As you round the corner you start the head arguing. You eyes widen as you realize it's coming from your grandfather's room.
 Your grandma just smiles as she shakes her head knocking lightly at the door.
"Yeah yeah" a voice shouts.
 You both enter as you begin to observe the sight before you eyes.
Your grandfather and his roommate are watching volleyball on the small TV in their hospital room. Shouting at the apparent bad plays.
"Anyone could have hit that set with their eyes closed" your grandfather shouted "what is that spiker doing?"
"He's just a weakling like all the others" the other man shouted "that wouldn't be happening under my coaching."
You roll your eyes and smile. Man these two were made for each other.
Your grandma slowly starts to unpack and plate the food she made for both the men. They continue to watch the game as your grandma hands them the food.
"Dont worry dear I packed enough for everyone" she smiled as you observed all the food. The box was heavy that you carried in but you didn't think there was an entire week's worth of food there.
"By everyone did you mean the entire hospital gran" you giggle as she laughs.
"Oh Y/N" your grandfather says as he looks up from his meal for a second "this is my roommate. You might know his grandson. I think he went to school with him."
The other man grumbled "I apologize if you do know him, the weakling."
You smile as you chuckle "Well sir its nice to meet you, I'm Y/N"
The older man turns to you smiling "oh I know who you are sweetheart, I'm Ikkei Ukai"
WHAT DID HE SAY?
You were about to speak when a knock sounded.
"Yeah yeah, what is this grand central in Tokyo?" your grandfather huffed as the door opened.
"Just came to check on my fav-" Keishin spoke as he entered, shutting the door and turning around.
His eyes were met with yours. He gulped as the two older men and older lady looked at you both.
"Y/N, I didn't know you would be here" Keishin says as he lifts his head to the back of his head.
"I told you last week my roommate had a granddaughter your age" Ikkei spoke sharped tongue.
"Well you didn't mention here name!" Keishin glared at his grandfather.
“You didn’t ask” Ikkei huffed as he turned his attention back to the game as Keishin placed his hand over his face.
You giggle at the circumstances.
This all had to be a joke right? No way this was coincidence!
"Ah Keishin it's so good to see you again" your grandmother says breaking the awkward silence "here have a plate"
"Oh you as well ma'am" he said bowing "thank you ma'am but I'll have to pass I’m just stopping by quick"
"Sit down you idiot the women made great food" your grandfather shouts at Keishin as you chuckle.
Your grandmother makes him a plate as he settles in by you at the spare table in the corner. Your grandmother sits beside your grandfather as he kisses her forehead. You smile as you watch them, all while Keishin watches you.
"Your grandfather and mine are one in the same" he says trying to break the silence.
"Ha ha yeah you can say that again" you say smiling as you eat.
"I honestly didn't know your grandfather was his roommate" he says.
"Well you probably wouldn't. They are my mothers parents so we don't share the same last name" you say looking down at your plate.
"You know, it was really great to see you play again Y/N" Keishin smiles at you.
You look up smiling back "Thank you. It was a lot of fun. You really have some great kids."
"Kageyama and Hinata couldn't stop talking about your sets. Kageyama said they were almost perfect" he said taking another bite
"Well I wouldn't say perfect. They can always use improvement" you say pushing your food around the plate.
"Give yourself more credit Y/N. You really are a great setter. I always thought so" Keishin says as he stares at you.
You laugh ironically "is that why you were always such an ass to me then?"
Keishin sighs "yeah I was an ass but it wasn't because you weren't good. I was stupid high school kid"
You sighed as you look to his smiling "I guess we've both changed a lot"
Keishin smiled softly at you as you take both plates and disguarded them in the bin.
"I'm going to step outside for a minute" you speak, kissing your grandma on the forehead.
"I'll come with you" Kishin says as you begin to walk outside
The silence is awkward. Neither of you know what to say to each other. It's like your years of high school rivalry has been reduced to this weird state of unknown.
"Look Y/N" keishin starts.
"Keishin" you interject "we both changed. It's ok. I'm not mad at you anymore."
That wasn't completely factual nor completely a lie.
You didn't hate Keishin.  In fact, thinking about it, you never really did. You admired the man but he annoyed you to no end. He was always better than you and you were jealous.
Keishin threw his cigarette as he walked towards you "Y/N I want to apologize."
You look at him with narrowed eyes "for what?"
"Well one for being a complete jerk back in high school" he proceeds.
"Jerk is an understatement but continue" you say smiling.
He laughs awkwardly "Listen Y/N can I at least make it up to you?"
You fold your arms "ok and how Keishin? It's not like we can go back in time and you can not mess up my serves" you spit as he looks towards the ground.
"Y/N please" Keishin says "my grandfather was right, I was a weakling back then. I was jealous of you. You had such talent and well, I enjoyed getting a rile from you. I know it was immature but it was the only way you'd talk to me."
“Wait what” you think as you try to process what he was saying
"I always admired you Y/N. You were a great captain and a fantastic setter. You worked so well all the players on your team. I honestly was a bit jealous" he continues as you state at him confused.
Keishin was jealous? Of you?
You say the only thing you can properly formulate "Well Keishin you sure had a hell of a way of showing it! You pissed me off, annoyed me to no end and now you tell me you were jealous?"
Keishin stares at your outburst.
"Keishin I apologize for yelling but it just seems unreal to me. I spent all of high school trying be as good as you and now your telling me you looked up to me? It just seems unreal" you say as you sit on the bench.
"Y/N" Keishin sits down in the other side of the bench "I know I was a complete jerk. I honestly didn't know it bothered you so much. I was a punk ass kid who was just trying to be someone. But I now realize I hurt someone who really meant a lot of me."
You look up from your hands to see Keishin with a soft smile on his face.
"Well this is awkward" you say as you stand up. You were never great with upfront feelings and awkward silences.
"Y/N please" Keishin says as you start to walk back to the room "Please just let me make it up to you. Let's have dinner. I promise. Just hear me out"
You sigh knowing the conversation was unavoidable. It wasn't that you didn't want to have dinner with Keishin, it's just that you still reeled from your past.
Maybe you were being petty and it seemed like Keishin had changed but were you really ready to admit that? Were you really ready to move on from a grudge you held for almost 10 years?
"Where" you sigh in defeat.
"Huh?" Keishin looks to you with question.
"Where and when" you look back at him with a less than eager face.
"How about Friday night? My families store?" Keishin shouts a little too enthusiastic.
You chuckle at his response "ok but I swear of you start shit I'm going to pelt a volleyball right at your forehead"
He laughs "there's the Y/N I remember"
You push him playfully as you both walk back into the hospital heading to your grandfather's room.
You enter the floor as you both hear loud shouting. You look at each other and take off running towards your grandfather's room. You bust open the door with Keishin on your heals as you see your grandfather on the floor and your grandmother holding her mouth.
"I'm fine I'm fine just got a bit worked up" he says.
Keishin moves to help your grandfather as you console your grandmother.
"Grandpa really? Getting worked up over volleyball?" You spit at him.
He glares at you "you're one to talk Y/N!"
Keishin’s eyes widen as you glare holes on your grandfather's head. He chuckles at your response.
"Oh Y/N it's about time you forgive the boy, it's been almost 10 years" your grandfather says
"Dont forgive him so easily Y/N" Ikkei interjects "make him work for it"
Keishin glares at his grandfather as he chuckles with your grandfather and they continue watching the game.
You and Keishin both sigh as you smile softly towards one another.
You're night out with Keishin approaches faster than you hoped. Honestly you were really indifferent about the whole situation. You had to admit, Keishin had probably changed since high school. I mean the Keishin you knew would never coach a high school volleyball team.
Right?
Gregg “Marcel” Dixon, the third of his parents, high school sweethearts, four children, is Georgia-born, the port city of Savannah, and South Carolina raised, just minutes away in the small, rural town of Ridgeland. Both areas are home to the Sea Island Creoles, or as they are better known, the Gullah-Geechee, a Black American ethnic group native to the sea islands, and the Lowcountry of the Gullah-Geechee Corridor where his family has resided since at least the mid-1700s. Even though he was a student of the Jasper County School District, South Carolina’s lowest performing district, a very troubled school system part of the state’s so-called “Corridor of Shame”, his childhood days, especially the earliest parts, were marked by love, happiness, and his rich, unique culture. He grew up with a large immediate and extended family that included his mother, his grandmother; his great grandmother; his grandfather, his two granduncles, his two uncles, his two aunts, his two cousins, and his three siblings. His great-grandaunts and cousins provided him and his siblings with a constant source of companionship, affection, camaraderie, and protection in their longtime community along a busy stretch of coastal highway that connected his town to the more popular Lowcountry destinations of Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, and Savannah. From all, he witnessed overwhelming compassion and empathy as they clothed, fed, protected, and housed many in need even though they were all people of modest means themselves. It was truly a wonderful time in his life.
At the end of slavery in 1865, Black Americans owned 0.5% of America’s wealth. Today, 165 years later, Black Americans at almost 15% of the population, fare little better owning just 3% of the nation’s wealth. The average wealth for a white American family is approaching $200,000.00 while the average wealth for a Black American family is almost 10 times less at $24,000.00. Twenty-five percent of black families have a net worth of either zero or negative and in just two decades, it will soon be zero for all Black Americans! This has NOTHING to do with the work ethic of Black Americans but has EVERYTHING to do with the systemic, government-sanctioned, violent enslavement, and the subsequent anti-black racial terror faced by Black Americans first centuries. This first manifested during chattel slavery, where they did not receive as much as a penny for their labor and then it continued through goverment sanctioned, violent discrimination and exclusion from government policies and initiatives that resulted in Black Americans being excluded from opportunities to build wealth, a number estimated to be high in the trillions.  At the same time, they were simultaneously being forced into deep poverty, by means of redlining,  Jim Crow, and land theft; extreme violence by means of lynch mobs, police brutality, terrorism from the FBI, and race riots; robbed denied equal access to an education by means of underfunded schools and educational discrimination, and more. This has not just hurt Black Americans, but all Americans.
According to one study, anti-black racism has caused the United States SIXTEEN TRILLION DOLLARS! It goes without saying then, a thriving Black America is a thriving America, hence, the motto of my campaign, “Repair Black America To Fix America”. The word “reparation” means “the act of repairing and keeping in repair.” To solve these issues, the American government has a responsibility to repair the damage it has caused, and that is why I will do all within my human power to bring a multifaceted reparations package for Black Americans That Are Descendants of Those Who Were Enslaved By The American Government aka Freedmen to fruition that will be funded by government spending, as have past initiatives.
This package will include:
The closure of the racial wealth gap that will include measures such as direct monetary payments, tax exemption status, debt cancelation, land grants, business grants, and more;
Class protection status for those descending from those who were enslaved by the American government;
Allotments of federally granted and protected land in all 50 states where only Freedmen can settle and receive services from the institutions located on these aforementioned lands;
Provisions of federally subsidized housing and business grants;
The investigation of cold cases of anti-black racial terrorism to bring all living criminals to justice;
The reform of heirs property to provide full equity and ownership to all heirs and compensation for any property that may have been lost or stolen through unethical avenues such as “partition sales”;
The reestablishment of the Freedmen Bureaus to close all disparities between Freedmen and White Americans such as the high mortality rate for black women during childbirth versus what it is for white women, job discrimination, heirs property, etc.
Establish a commission to specifically review and immediately address the unique challenges facing black men and boys.
Amelia is pregnant again and she and link decide not to tell anyone yet but they go to have lunch with Links parents and then they notice something and Maureen tells Link she knows because of the symptoms Amelia has
the mariners game
thank you so much for the prompt i really appreciate it!!! i hope it’s alright i incorporated this prompt into my unexpected series, i hope everyone’s doing well and staying safe
“Mom! Your not ready?” Scout exclaimed as his mother tiredly came down the stairs.
“Huh? For what?” Amelia asked rubbing her eye.
“We’re going to the Mariners game with Grandma and Grandpa!” Scout reminded his mother.
“If your too tired I’ll just take the kids, we’re meeting my parents there anyway so you don’t have to worry.” Link told her as he washed the dishes from breakfast. He knew she hadn’t slept well the night before, this pregnancy her morning sickness had been active at night.
“No, I want to go. Just give me a minute to get ready.” Amelia told him sleepily as she made her way back up the stairs. Once Link had finished the dishes he went upstairs to find his wife.
“Are you sure you want to go?” He asked leaning on the doorway to their bathroom.
“Yeah, I’m sure. Scouts been so excited for this, it’s all he’s been able to talk about. I don’t even feel sick right now, just sleepy. I’ll probably sleep in the car anyway, there’s always terrible traffic on game days.”
“Hmm, your favorite part.” Link smirked, Amelia didn’t necessarily have road rage but she was very impatient when it came to traffic. He went behind her and wrapped his arms around her.
“Have your told your parents about the baby yet?” Amelia asked as she brushed through her hair.
“No I haven’t. Should I of already done it?”
“No, I mean it’s still early. We haven’t told anyone, and we shouldn’t of even told the kids.”
“Well you had to make it clear we couldn’t have a dog.” Link smirked once seeing his wife roll her eyes
“No one in this house will let me live that down will they? The dog had an owner!”
“I know I’m just messing with you. You really can’t take a joke can you?”
“I can take a joke.” Amelia defensively stated.
“Not while your pregnant you can’t.” He immediately regretted him statement once he saw the look his wife gave him.
_______________________________________
Link looked over to see his wife fast asleep next to him. He knew she couldn’t of been comfortable sleeping in the car, and he felt guilty for not making her stay home.
“Dad? Do you think the Mariners are gonna win today?” Scout asked anxiously, the team hadn’t been doing great this season.
“I hope so, it’s gonna be a tight one. Especially with our star player out.” He had heard all about the players injury from Nico as he wanted his expertise, but they were optimistic he’d be back in play soon.
“I still don’t get the object of the game.” Addison admitted as she heard her father and brother talk about baseball.
“I think the word your looking for is objective. And your vocabulary has been so good, I’m really proud of you.”
“Benny uses a lot of big words. His dad is a English professor so he uses a lot of big words, so Benny has been teaching me.”
“That’s nice of him.” Link smiled, he was so happy his daughter had made a friend.
“Dad.” Addison whispered leaning closer to her fathers seat. “When we go to the baseball game can we get nachos?”
“Sure.” The girls father whispered back. “Why are we whispering?”
“Because mommy’s sleeping.”
“Why’s mom sleeping?” Scout interjected leaning forward to see if his mother was actually sleeping.
“Because she’s sleepy, she didn’t sleep much last night.” Link answered his son.
“She’ll be awake for the game right? It’s very important she watches the game with us, she’s gonna love baseball once she sees it in person.”
“I’ve been trying to get her to love baseballs for years, I just don’t think it’s gonna happen bud.” Link chuckled. “But she loves watching us enjoy baseball, her absolute favorite thing is seeing you kids happy.”
“Well I’m sure I can convince her, I’m her favorite.” Scout smiled.
“No your not.” Addison quickly said, offended with her brother. “I’m moms favorite.”
“Your mother doesn’t have favorites.” Link firmly stated before the conversation escalated.
“Dad, everyone has favorites.” Scout blatantly stated. “Moms my favorite, what about you Addie?”
“My favorite is mom too.”
“So mom is both of your favorites, not me?” Link faked jealousy, both of the kids were attached to their mother and he couldn’t blame them.
“Mommy is my favorite because she gives the best cuddles.” Addison admitted, looking to her brother for his answer.
“No she doesn’t. Dad gives the best hugs.” Scout defended his father.
“Scout’s right your dad does give the best hugs.” Amelia confessed she had woken up a couple of minutes ago, but she was entertained by the conversation so she kept quiet.
“Who’s your favorite mom?” Addison asked.
“I don’t have favorites.”
“What about you dad?” Addison asked realizing she wasn’t going to get anywhere with her mother
“Hmm.” Link seemed to contemplate this for a moment. “I’ve gotta say your mom.”
“You are ridiculous Atticus Lincoln.” Link looked over to see his girlfriend grinning at him
________________________________________
“We’re gonna lose this game aren’t we?” Scout asked his father and grandfather.
“I think they can pull it together.” Eric confessed on the edge of the seat. The Mariners were pitching at the moment.
“I’m going to the bathroom.” Amelia whispered to her husband before standing up.
“Where are you going mommy?” Addie asked realizing her mother was leaving.
“To the bathroom, do you need to go?”
“Nope.” Addison said turning her attention back to the game and leaned against her grandmother. “Are you bored?”
“Just a bit. I’ve been watching this game for years, your grandfather and father are big fans. So I’ve gotten used to it. It was more exciting when I got to see your dad play.”
“My dad played baseball?” Addie asked her father had never mentioned this to her, she had to remember to ask him about it.
“For a little bit when he was in high school, but I made him quit because it was too dangerous.” As this was true the real reason he had to quit was because his cancer had come back, and he was undergoing treatments. But she didn’t want to go into that with her granddaughter.
“That’s what mommy says, she doesn’t want Scout playing it and getting hurt.”
“How are you liking soccer?” The girls grandmother asked, she recalled her son telling about them enrolling her into soccer to help her socialize.
“Oh, I didn’t like it so my mom let me quit.”
“Well, do you have another activity that your interested in?”
“Nope.” Addie shook her head no. “There’s this book club at the library my friend showed me though.”
“That should be fun.” Maureen smiled happy to hear she was socializing, she knew how worried her son had been over it.
“They still haven’t scored?” Amelia asked as she came back sitting between her two children.
“Nope.” Scout popped the ‘p’. “They’re gonna lose.”
“Give them a chance they’ve got this.” Link optimistically smiled.
________________________________________
“Can you believe they won?!” Scout exclaimed excitedly as the group walked into the burger place.
“I told ya.” Link smiled picking his son up.
“It was quite impressive.” Eric agreed as they sat down at the table. “I think the Mariners have a good chance at making the playoffs at least.”
“I hope so.” Scout toothily grinned. After everyone got their food and started eating, Maureen spoke up realizing the neurosurgeon wasn’t quite eating.
“You feeling okay Amelia?”
“Yeah I’m okay.” She forcefully smiled pushing the fries around her plate.
“You sure?”
“Yeah, I’m okay.” Link put his hand on his wife’s thigh in attempt to comfort her, knowing she was probably feeling nauseous at this time of the night.
______________________________________
“You guys have made the best kids.” Maureen smiled as she stepped onto the porch where her son and daughter in law were.
“Thank you.” Amelia smiled as the woman sat next to her.
“It’s good that Addie is socializing. She’s told me she’s made a friend.”
“Yeah she has.” Link proudly smiled, he knew how much his daughter had struggled with making friends and was relieved she was starting to get more comfortable making friends. “She seems happier, she doesn’t get as overwhelmed when she’s put into a situation, but we’re still working on it.”
“Dad?” The three turned around to see Addison at the back door.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Can you tuck me in? I had a bad dream.”
“Of course.” He smiled picking his daughter up causing her to happily shriek.
“He’s the best dad.” Amelia said as she watched the pair walk back into the house.
“I’m so proud of him.” Maureen agreed, she was so happy she got to see her son be a father. She thought she’d never even see him grown up. The two sat in comfortable silence, listening to the noises around them until the older woman spoke up again. “When we’re you gonna tell me your pregnant again?”
“What?” Amelia asked her voice going an octave higher, but when realizing the woman believe her she confessed. “Yeah I am. It’s still early though.”
“Congratulations.” The woman smiled brightly excited to have another grandchild.
“Thanks.” Amelia basked in the slight breeze, she loved sitting outside to think. “How’d you know?”
“Your kidding right?” The woman laughed. “You were up nearly every twenty minutes at the baseball game to go to the bathroom, and at dinner I nearly thought you were going to throw up.”
“Yeah who was I kidding.” The neurosurgeon laughed along with her.
“Do the kids know?”
“Scouts over the moon excited, and Addie was upset at first but Scout’s helping her realize this is a good thing. He’s the best big brother.”
“He really is. Growing up my big brother meant everything to me.” Maureen confessed. “I think it’s one of the most important jobs.”
“It really is.” Amelia nodded think about her own brother who meant the world to her even if he wasn’t there anymore.
post grad - part one (jj maybank x oc)
Tumblr media
pairing: jj maybank x original character
synopsis: she’s your modern day college graduate: good at school, bad at the whole after-school thing. recent grad margo jean walker was told her whole life she was destined for greatness - straight a’s, top of her class, full ride to columbia - until she graduated. now, she’s hiding out in her grandmother’s outer banks estate, attempting to figure out what her “life plan after college” is supposed to look like. on her journey to self-realization, she finds herself enveloped in the life of jj maybank - a high school dropout, bumming with his childhood friends in a beat up shack on the coast. two people, one town, zero plan.
warnings: drinking/cursing - probably an eternal warning with my writing.
a/n: straight up haven’t written a thing in fandom in like, five years. jj maybank (a perfect character) has singlehandedly dragged me out of my fic writing slump - that’s one inspirational motherfucker.
part one brought to you by that one opening scene where jj was mowing a lawn shirtless. cinematic gold.
anyways, this is a classic “gifted girl is told she’s gifted her whole life and then she gets out of school and realizes she has no idea what the fuck she’s doing so she runs from her problems” meets her antithesis + his pals. there will definitely be some stronger warnings down the line, if you catch my drift.
I’m also 1000% team “JJ’s name is short for John because it was too confusing having two John’s around so they compromised with JJ and John B” thanks.
pogues + kooks featured are all 21+. it’s called post grad for a reason, folks.
enjoy xx.
        “Margo, if you lay out any longer, you’ll freckle up. Your nose is completely covered!”
         Margo hummed, wriggling her body enough to face in the general direction of her grandmother’s voice. She blindly stuck a hand out from her chaise chair, slapping aimlessly until she felt the familiar bill of her worn baseball cap, before dropping it onto her face.
         “Is that better, Mimi?” Her voice, rough from disuse, was muffled from behind the cap.
         “Slightly. It would be nicer if it wasn’t that damn Yankees hat.”
         Margo grinned, hearing the exasperated amusement in her grandmother’s voice. Although a long time resident on the coast of North Carolina, her Mimi still carried a torch for her hometown Boston teams, often recounting fond memories of nosebleed seats at Fenway, or listening to Bruins games on the radio. She claimed one of the reasons she remained on the Outer Banks is that she couldn’t bear to show her face back in Boston, knowing her granddaughter was a Yankees fan.
         Margo couldn’t help but poke fun at her any chance she got.
         “Sorry Mimi. Would you rather I freckle?”
         Mimi peered over the rims of her cat-eye sunglasses, observing from a safe, shaded perch. “You know, neither of these things would be a problem if your mother hadn’t married your father. You’d be freckle-free and a Sox fan, without a doubt.”
         Margo ripped her cap off, squinting towards her grandmother. “My heart would always find their way back to the Yanks. And I think my freckles give me character!”
         Mimi pushed her sunglasses back up, glancing back down at the dog eared book in her lap. “You got the attitude from your father too.”
         Margo grinned, white teeth splitting across her warm face. “Now that’s a bald faced lie, Mimi. You know exactly who I got the attitude from.”
         A loud laugh burst from the older woman, setting her forgotten book to the side. “Yes, unfortunately I do. I was hoping I could pawn another one of your traits off to your father’s side, but I suppose I have no one else but myself to blame for your…,” She paused, looking for the proper words, “…quick wit.” She drawled, her muddled Boston accent blending with the Carolina.
         It was Margo’s turn to laugh, a similar burst to her grandmother. She swung her legs off the chaise chair, before standing and padding over to her grandmother’s shaded spot.
         “I think I got my affinity for gin & tonics from your side too.” Margo quipped, grabbing Mimis empty cup. “Refill?”
         Mimi sighed, glancing at the glass tumbler in her granddaughter’s hand. “I suppose. Lighter on the gin this time though, dear. You about knocked me out with that last one.”
         Margo laughed, turning towards the screen door that lead inside, “I got my heavy hand from you, too!”
         She could feel her grandmother’s eyes roll from behind her.
         Margo made her way to the wet bar, a familiar and friendly sight in her grandmother’s home. She quickly went through the motions of making two gin & tonics, mixing Hendricks with Fevertree, before topping with two limes – the only true way to enjoy a G&T. As she moved to retreat back to her sunny spot on the chaise, her stomach grumbled, reminding her it was time to eat something, or her heavy hand might knock her out too.
         She pivoted towards the kitchen, setting the tumblers down on the island before venturing into the walk-in pantry to grab a snack. As she exited the pantry, her peripherals caught something moving in her front yard, relatively unusual for a Saturday afternoon. She turned to face the floor to ceiling windows in the foyer, hands clutching an unopened back of pretzel sticks, before squinting to make out the figure on her Mimi’s front lawn.
         Outside her grandmother’s home, was a man, mowing the space rather methodically. He was tall and tan, and Margo could almost describe his shirtless upper half as glistening, like a bad paperback romance. The arm of his silver aviators were clenched between his teeth, as he pushed the mower through the thick grass, muscles flexing.
         The sound of crushed plastic startled Margo from her gaze. She swiped her forearm across her face almost instinctively, confirming she wasn’t actually salivating from watching the mystery landscaper at work. Tossing the now-crushed pretzel sticks to the counter, she quickly grabbed the melting drinks, and hustled outside to her grandmother.
         “Took you long enough, Margo Jean. I thought college would have made you more efficient in your cocktail-“
         “Mimi.” Margo interrupted, clutching a drink in each fist. “Mimi, who – who IS that outside your house?”
         “What?” Mimi startled, sitting up in her seat. “What do you mean who’s outside my house?”
         Margo sat next to her grandmother, passing her a drink. “The guy mowing your lawn – who is he? I’ve never seen him before.”
         Margo watched as her grandmother sighed, settling back into her seat. “Oh, you mean John.” Her grandmother raised the cup to her lips, taking a long sip.
         “What do you mean, John?!” Margo squawked. “I’ve been living here for a month and I’ve never, ever seen him before!”
         Mimi peered over her sunglasses again, looking at her flustered granddaughter. “Darling, are you alright? You look flushed. Maybe you should stay out of the sun.”
         “I’m fine, Mimi. It just surprised me, that’s all. I wasn’t expecting to see a random man in our front lawn.”
         Mimi hummed. “Honey, he’s harmless. He’s been helping me out for a couple years now – a local boy, from town. He’s usually here on Thursdays, while you’re at work.”
         “Oh.” Margo took a long sip of her drink, relaxing a bit. While she was partially worked up by how upsettingly attractive the landscaper was, she had to admit she was a bit frightened by the sight of a random man on her grandmother’s property. It had been just her and Mimi at the estate for the past month, and a new face was a bit shocking.
         “You know, I think he’s about your age. Sweet boy, always offering to help around the place after your grandfather passed.”
         Margo placed a comforting hand on Mimi’s arm, sensing the distress in her voice at the mention of her deceased husband. Mimi patted Margo’s hand briefly, before standing and clapping twice.
         “Come! Come on, this is a great opportunity.” Mimi flitted into the house.
         Margo scrambled to her feet. “What do you mean, a great opportunity?”
         “A great opportunity to meet some people your age. I know it hasn’t been easy, but John is just the nicest boy, and I think it’ll be good to have a familiar face other than mine on the island.”
         “No! Mimi, I don’t need more familiar faces.” Margo ran to catch her grandmothers’ thin arm, slowing her progression towards the front door. “Please, I know plenty of people here. I have you, and Jennifer, and Mr. Picard. That’s all I really need, for now.”
         Mimi pulled a face. “Sweetheart, I love you dearly, but that was a pathetic showing right there. You’re going to cite your boss and the neighborhood gate guard as your friends?”
         Margo matched her Mimi’s face, scrunching her nose. “Look, I never said they were close friends. But I know people! I know people. I don’t need more people.”
         “Nonsense. Now, come on, let me introduce you. Oh, don’t give me that face, Margo Jean, you won’t be betrothed to the guy after a simple introduction.” Mimi firmly grasped Margo’s hand, tugging her towards the front door. “Now, be nice. Don’t give him any of that New York attitude you love to display towards everyone in this town.”
         “Mimi, I thought we agreed my attitude came directly from you. Don’t blame my – hey!” Margo stumbled through the now-open front door, coming to a graceless stop on the first porch step.
         The mower came to a stop, with the still-shirtless operator turning towards the front door.
         “Mrs. S! Anything I can help you with?” The landscaper yelled from the far edge of the lawn.
         “Oh, no John, thank you! Do you mind coming over here for a second?” Mimi gripped Margo’s shoulders tightly, as she felt her granddaughter jerk away.
         “Jesus, Mimi, you didn’t even let me cover up.” Margo hissed, her eyes trained forward on the male ambling his way up the long path to the front door.
         “Oh stop, you two are practically matching with your outfits right now.” Mimi glanced at her granddaughter’s light blue swimsuit, before looking at John’s outfit, consisting of black shorts and a pair of ratty boots. “Even playing field.”
         Margo huffed, crossing her arms across her stomach. “This is not how I wanted to be –“
         “What’s up Mrs. S?” John asked, stopping at the bottom of the steps. His silver aviators were hooked into the waistband of his shorts. “Everything alright?”
         “Oh yes John, everything is fine. I just wanted to introduce you to my granddaughter.” Mimi squeezed Margo’s shoulders. “She’s in from New York and staying with me for a while.”
         John laughed, his sharp teeth settling into an attractive grin as he glanced at Margo. “And how the hell did you end up with a granddaughter from New York? She not going to let me put up the Sox flag for you this year?”
         Mimi snorted. “Margo’s a good girl, she would never deprive her grandmother of such a thing. We try to forgive her for her New Yorker-tendencies – she didn’t stand a chance with her father’s early indoctrination.”
         “You know, I am right here. Mind if I speak for myself?” Margo huffed.
         Mimi squeezed Margo’s shoulders again, continuing her conversation, “Anyways, John, this is Margo Jean. Margo Jean,” Mimi paused, gesturing to the boy. “This is John.”
         Margo stepped forward, shaking her shoulders out of her grandmother’s death grip before sticking her hand out. “Hi, John. Margo Jean Walker.”
         He grinned, grabbing her hand in his, joining the two for an uncomfortably sweaty handshake. “Margo Jean Walker. That’s a lot of name for one girl.”
         Margo released her grip, looking down her nose towards him. “Well you don’t have to call me all three. Margo works just fine.”
         His grin intensified, as he matched her stare. “Margo Jean Walker.” He repeated. “Alright. I’m JJ. No one around here calls me John. Well, except Mrs. S.”
         “It’s a nice name, John, I don’t see why all of you kids have to go by names that aren’t your given names. It makes things confusing for old biddies like myself.” Mimi looked at the pair in distain. “Margo’s always been Margo – the consistency is nice.”
         “Margo Jean Walker.” JJ hummed, eyes dancing over the girl. “Consistent New Yorker.”
         Margo and Mimi let out their matching laughs simultaneously. “Yeah, that’s it.” Margo giggled. “Consistent New Yorker.” She popped her hands on her hips, offering the boy a toothy smile, her eyes squinting. “Well, it was nice to meet you, JJ-not-John. Thanks for helping Mimi out. Saves me from having to figure out…that.” She gestured towards the idle mower.
         He followed her eyes, glancing back at the machine he left at the top of the lawn, mentally snorting at the thought of the bikini-clad girl pushing the mower across a half-acre of grass. “Yeah, it’s probably for the best that – oh.” He turned back as he spoke, just catching a glimpse of her cheeky bikini bottoms and long hair, as she slipped inside.
         Mimi tutted, waving a dismissive hand in the direction of her granddaughter. “Don’t mind her, she’s just bent-out-of-shape because of the move. She’ll warm up more, eventually.”
         JJ sighed, sliding his sunglasses back on. “No problem, Mrs. S. Need anything else done around here? Just about finished with your lawn.”
         Mimi patted her frosted blonde hair, quickly glancing over the state of her lawn. “Looks great, hon. Nothing else today, but I’m thinking of expanding my garden in the backyard.” She took a long sip of her drink, before continuing. “Are you available to take on a project this summer?”
         JJ faltered, thinking about the time constraints a project would have on his summer. He had to consider things – his friends, his surfing, his three other jobs. “Uh, well –“
         “I’d rather you take the job, John,” Mimi started. “I don’t particularly want strangers around my house, especially if my granddaughter’s going to be frying herself poolside all summer,” Mimi scoffed. “Her poor skin.”
         JJ paused, considering the pros of working in the company of Mrs. S’s leggy, bikini-clad granddaughter all summer. “I mean, that sounds –“
         The older woman shoved her cat-eye sunglasses into her hair, taking three steps down her porch to be eye level with the blonde, who remained stationary at the bottom of the stairs.
         “I’ll pay you double.”
         A tan hand flew out, forearm adorned with tattered bracelets, freckles and the occasional scar. “You’ve got it, Mrs. S.”
         Mimi smiled, primly shaking the boy’s hand. “Great. You’ll start next week, Saturday morning?”
         JJ suppressed a groan, trying not to think about the morning boat ride he’d undoubtably be missing out on. “Sure, sounds great. How long do you think it’ll –“
         “A couple weekends, maybe. I won’t hoard you the whole summer, John. God knows the other ladies in the neighborhood would riot.” Mimi grinned, patting his cheek. “And they already don’t like me very much, so let’s try to keep them on my good side, alright?”
         JJ exhaled, relieved he wasn’t signing his summer away. “Absolutely, Mrs. S, although I can’t think of a single reason why someone wouldn’t like you.” He finished, offering a shit-eating grin towards the older woman.
         She barked out a laugh, flapping a hand around as she turned to open the front door and grab her purse. She pulled a handful of bills out of her envelope wallet, pressing them into his palm. “Here, you kiss-ass. For today and a cash-advance for selling your soul to me for a couple weekends.” She grinned as his blue-eyes widened, staring at the money. “Now get out of here, enjoy the rest of your day.”
         JJ’s feet faltered, as he started walking towards the lawn mower, his head still looking back at the front door. “Th-thanks, Mrs. S! Yeah, I’ll see you next weekend. Thank you! Thanks!”
         Mimi smiled, wiggling her fingers at the boy as he rushed to put the mower away. “See you Saturday, John.”
Hidden: Chapter 15
Chapter 15: Always and Forever
(Eve)
Eve or Natasha was staring at the amber liquid drink in her mug. She had been into deep sorrow of heartbreak. Ever since he left, she hasn’t left the room. Today, it was my first time being out of the room since that day. Natasha couldn’t tell what day it was. To her, it felt like years had passed by. Maybe this was for the best. They both are generations apart. She’s from the future and Eren is from here. What business does she have here anyways? The grey eyed woman should focus on trying to get back her timeline before encountering her grandmother or grandfather. Shit, if grandpa Levi finds out, she’ll get a beating in their spars.
Eve took a sipped from her mug. She sighed then pulled out some change to pay the ale. The Ackerman from the future couldn’t enjoy her beer. Once she paid, the woman started to walk away to who knows where.
Her life before ending up in the past was basically what the life of an New Yorker heiress was. There were parties, going to the best prestigious private schools, and of course any high class social events. It was every debutante’s dream. She never liked it but it was her medicine in dealing with her ill grandmother and her PTSD.
Natasha remembered that tragic day when she lost her mother and baby brother. Her father had died a year before their death. He was an assassin like their ancestors were before. When she was a little girl, Eve had wanted to follow her father’s footsteps including her grandfather’s, but they never allowed. It had frustrated her. Both her grandparents had told her to just be a normal girl with careless dreams and living life to the fullest. Whenever she had visited Paradis during her vacations, there were many arguments between her and grandpa Levi and grandma Historia. They see things way differently than her. At first, she doesn’t get why they are preventing her from choosing the path she wanted to take.
The last time she saw them, a huge fight had led their relationship delicately.
(Flashback)
It was a normal evening in the palace. She was spending time with her grandparents and her aunts and uncle along with her younger cousins. Everyone was enjoying their meal. Usually the kitchen staff cooked their meals, but tonight her grandmother Queen Historia decided to cook. At one time, the staff gave up in preventing her grandmother from doing anything, especially cooking.
“Natasha, I’m so happy that you decided to make time to visit us from your studies at the University.” Her grandmother, Historia began to speak.
The young woman glanced up at her grandmother. Queen Historia was in her late 50’s about to reach her 60’s soon. Her grandma still has her angelic beauty that she was known for as her age hasn’t ruined her beauty. Her blonde hair shined with some silver strands but she was still a goddess, well in the eye’s of the public.
“Well, I need to be away from the city life in NYC for a while.” The American sipped her wine. She heard a familiar scoff from the head of the table on the right. Her grandfather, the once famous Captain Levi Ackerman of the Survey Corps and Assassin Master of the Brotherhood Paradis stared at her. Natasha frowned then set her glass of wine with a bit of force.
“Ok, what now, grandpa?” Her tone sounded annoyed from her own grandfather’s attitude.
“I’m not stupid for the real reason you decide to come to visit all of the sudden.” Levi glared at her oldest granddaughter. Oh great, here we go again. The college student rolled her eyes at him since she knows where this is going.
“Praise tell oh dear grandfather.” Her sarcastic tone was showing. Now, the rest of the family groaned as they knew there would be a fight between Levi and Natasha.
Historia sighed but continued sipping her wine. Levi was now in his 70s. His face had aged well even though he had scars on his face during the war.His once raven hair was now grey. No matter how he looked, Historia had and always will love her husband. They both had gone through so much that their bond was too solid to be broken. There were times in their marriage, both older couples did unthinkable things that would have caused their relationship to end. But their love story will be known for centuries.
“You came here not because of your studies. Instead, you’re here from another scandal you decided to get away from. You can lie to us, but your grandmother and I know what happened in New York.” Levi said in a stern tone which the atmosphere became heavy.
Before Natasha could say anything, her uncle interrupted the conversation.
“Dad, I don’t think it’s the best time right now. The children are here.” her uncle reminded Levi that the younger kids are here listening to this argument. Natasha adores her uncle since he was the most understanding out of his siblings. Her aunts are a bit too modesty. They always reminded her to be ladylike with modest manners. Do her wrong she loved all her family, but they always find something that’s not up to their standards. It just drives her so insane. The only reason she is still visiting them because they are the only thing close to her father, Atticus Ackerman the eldest child of her grandparents.
It’s not her fault that she was raised in a society that you can express freely to be who you are. But in her case, she can be a bit too wild even her grandma Virginia Stark nee Potts aka Pepper, the CEO of Stark Industries. In a way, her nana had once told her she was just like her grandfather, the late Tony Stark who she had never got to meet. What she learned about him. He was wild, eccentric, very intelligent that he had the tendencies of hacking into governments top projects to benefit his cases when he gets into trouble or just cause. After all, her being a smart mouth had always ended up into an argument with Levi as he’s the type not taking anyone’s bullshit even hers.
“Tch. We’ll have to cut this family dinner short. Natasha, you will meet me and your grandmother in my office in 10 minutes.” He said as his chair was pushed back to get up. He glanced at his wife who nodded at him and got up too. They walked out of the dining room. Now only her uncle, aunts, cousins were still here.
“Tsk tsk niece. If you would have acted a lady not a hussy-” Aunt Frieda Ackerman said. Uncle Erwin hissed at his older sister. “Frieda that’s enough! What’s got into?”
Frieda scoffed then got up and called her son who’s 10 years old to follow her. The little blonde child obediently goes after his mother. Meanwhile Natasha was looking at her meal from trying not to lose control and snapped at her auntie. Her other aunt had been too quiet. The good thing, she’s not too bad compared to her Aunt Frieda. Aunt Krista finally broke her silence.
“Sweetheart, she doesn’t mean that. She’s just worried about you.” Her blonde aunt was always the peacekeeper in the family. Her hand was on her huge belly as she’s not that long to be due. Her husband, Aaron Arlert, one of brightest soldiers in his generation and the son of the late Commander Armin Arlert of the Survey Corps and Master Assassin; his wife former Marley’s Warrior and Assassin Master who died long ago too. Both of them had passed on due to the Titan’s curse. Her auntie is excited for her first child.
“Are you sure? She seems so convinced I’m ruining our family’s reputation again. She needs to stop being so bitter around everyone just because of her marriage problems.” Natasha mumbled. Both her uncle and aunt gave a disappointing look as it was uncalled for her to bring up Frieda’s marriage issue with some high class dickhead who happens to be a Marleyan. Natasha believes her estranged uncle is only using her aunt because she’s a princess, the next heir to the throne. By law, it was supposed to be Natasha as she’s the only surviving child of the late crowned Prince Atticus. Since the government officials had passed a law to prevent her from taking the throne after her grandmother either abdicated  the throne or passed away.
To be honest, she doesn’t want the throne. If she chooses between the throne or being the next CEO of Stark Industries then she’ll prefer being the next CEO. If there was a third choice it’s neither. The Eldian-American wanted to find her own path. She doesn’t like her future being planned for her. She’s a free-spirited woman, but to certain relatives apparently she’s a rebel brat.
“Natasha.” He scolded at his niece. Natasha sighed and got up from her chair. “Goodnight by the way if I don’t get to see you for the rest of the night.” Before leaving she goes to hug her twin cousins from her uncle who are around 7 years old. Both boys hugged her back and said goodnight as she finally walked out of the family dinning room.
The brunette walked through silent hallways which in her opinion it gave her the creeps sometimes. Some halls have guards on duty. The heiress just ignores them since her grandparents are probably waiting for her to scold. Ugh! She’s passed 18 and yet; they treat her like some misbehaving kid. Whatever had happened on the video was not what it seems. The media loves to fuck her over since she’s a royal and a Stark. They enjoyed milking out every ‘scandal’ she has been in.
The grey eyed heiress made it to the doors of grandpa’s office. The old man had been retired for a long time after the war. Seriously, why can he find some hobby instead of getting up on her case. She grabbed the handles to open the doors. Her grandparents are already sitting down while sipping their cup of tea.
“Tch. Finally, you were taking your time to get here.” Levi said as he set his cup of tea on the coffee table.
She rolled her eyes at his comment then went to sit on the couch to glance at both older couples. Her eyes landed on the already cold cup of tea for her to drink. The heiress doesn’t mind since it’s basically drinking iced tea without sweetening or added flavor. She waited for them to speak while sipping the cup.
Historia took a glimpse at Levi then back to her granddaughter. “Sweetheart, we’re worried for you. This is not just any light scandal you have been in. This scandal involved you and some man being taped while having sex. Of all the things, this I can’t tolerate anymore of your wild party life. You forget you’re a royal and a member of the Ackerman clan.”
The younger Ackerman wanted to scream from the frustration she felt. That tape was not how they think it happened. She didn’t know the guy was filming her. It's a crime for what that asshole did, but of course they don’t understand. Her grandparents are from different generations with different perspectives than hers.
Don’t they understand how this made her feel? On that morning, she was watching tv at her apartment eating cereal when the headlines started to show. She felt sick and betrayed. How could he do this to her? The guy, Darren, is nice and charming. She thought he was different. Nope, her taste in men is like a pattern of bad karma. Natasha had texted him but didn’t respond. When she decided to go to his place, he was busy entertaining some friends. Oh the rage in her came out. She made everyone leave and once it was just her and him; there were arguments and some plates thrown at him. Low key she could have given an old Ackerman ass kicking, but that would lead to getting arrested.
After the drama, she didn’t come out of her apartment due to paparazzi and noisy people. Her poor grandmother was expecting her to visit. It was too much to the point her PTSD returned. Her psychiatrist suggested she go to the safest place for her. So she packed up to spend some time with her paternal grandparents and prayed they would listen and understand her what she was going through. Sadly, none of those didn’t happen. Her other grandmother doesn’t know yet. She made sure it keeps it that way. The heiress doesn’t want her nana to get distress since her cancer has returned and is becoming worse. Now, all she hears was their rants as she zoned out from all these events had happened.
“Natasha? Natasha? Are you even listening?” Historia tried to get her granddaughter’s attention.
“Oi, brat. Answer your grandmother.” He used his infamous authoritative tone. The college girl snapped and glanced at both of them.
“You know, only Uncle Erwin had asked me how I was feeling. He listened to what really happened and didn’t judge me. Both of you, had not once asked me how I am feeling since the scandal was broken. I was hoping my family would be a bit understanding and listen to me because I would never sink myself to that. All I got here was I should be ashamed of myself or take responsibility. And guess what, I had been feeling ashamed and disgusted because the whole world saw me exposed and it was without my consent. If this conservation will lead to more scolding and family’s reputation then I’m done here.” She gets up to roughly palace the cup on the saucer then walks to the doors to open. The heiress slammed the doors.
Fuck everything here. If she can go somewhere to be safe and herself, then it will help her not to lose insanity. Natasha didn’t feel her tears were falling. The heiress kept going until she was outside in the royal private garden. The distressed girl sat on the bench to let the tears become sobs.
“Mom...Dad..if you were still alive, would you believe me? Would you understand me when I need it the most? I’m just tired of everything. I missed you both…” The brown haired woman whispered as her eyes stared up at the stars.
Natasha loved to be in the garden whenever she’s alone. It’s helped her clear her thoughts and calm her emotions. Right, in front of her a mini section of lavenders. It was her 16th birthday present. Its scent was soothing and relaxing. They’re one of her favorite flowers along marigold and winter roses. While enjoying the stars and the flowers, her phone rang. She pulled out from her pocket jeans and answered.
“Hey Stella, what’s wrong?” her tone instantly changed to concerning.
On the phone a woman who’s one of her friends and coworkers for S.H.I.E.L.D. “Hey Natasha, I know you’re on vacation but you need to come back. The Time machine had not been working.” Stella said on the phone.
“Have you tried rebooting or shutting down the machine?” Natasha said, trying to figure out the solution.
“Yes, I did it a few times. Also, I add fuel before doing anything. I need it to have it running by tomorrow.” Stella said with anxiousness.
“Just send me the data on my phone and I’ll check it out what’s the problem. If it’s something too serious, I’ll fly back to the Headquarters to fix it.” Already, browsing her phone to check the data that was being sent to her.
On her mother’s side, she got the brains, but on her father’s side the physique of a fighter. Growing up without alive parents had made her determined to learn to be prepared to protect herself and any loved ones that matter to her. The heiress had joined S.H.I.E.L.D around after high school. At first, she was stubborn to be part of the next generation of the Avengers until Director Maria Hill gave her old videos of her late grandfather, Tony Stark aka Ironman.
Beside being named after one of the original members, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, also gave her another reason to join. Both of them had made sacrifices to save the planet and the population. The least she could do was to honor them and not to let their death be in vain.
After searching up to find any problem that was causing the machine not working, Natasha sighed and called back Stella.
“Hey Stella, it’s a bigger problem than we thought. I’ll catch a flight asap. I’ll see you later then.” Once the call was over, the woman got up to go back to the palace to pack up to leave
By the time she got to her room packing up, a knock was heard. “Come in.” She said.
Historia opened the door to enter then closed it. “Natasha...we owed you an apology.” The queen noticed her granddaughter packing up her things.
“Are you planning to go back home already?” She was concerned.
“Yeah, there’s an emergency that needs me.” the heiress sounded vague.
“Oh dear, is Pepper getting worse?” Historia frowned from being worried for the older woman.
“No and thank god it’s not that emergency. I just need to go.” The truth was only nana knew about Natasha being part of the Avengers. If her Eldian grandparents were aware, they would become overprotective and prevent her from joining. It’s best this remains a secret plus she’s a grown woman who can make decisions.
“Honey, if your leaving became the argument earlier, we are sorry. Please don’t leave. We’ll hear your side of the story in the morning.” The blonde queen pleaded with her only granddaughter to stay. Historia had missed her. They may have differences, but her love for her is big as the rest of the family. Her fear was seeing her granddaughter going into a dark path.
Natasha sighed as she finished packing. “It’s not a fight, grandma.”
“Then what is it?” She said as trying to understand Natasha. She has become very mysterious and distant towards everyone except her only remaining son and her youngest daughter, Kuchel who is taking an internship in Hizuru for political foreign affairs as her major. To the rest, Natasha shuts them out.
“It’s just work. A colleague of mine called me and said that they found some documents but it’s in some ancient language they haven't seen.” The heiress said.
“Can they send it to you through your phone or laptop?” Historia said.
“No, they are old and ancient so they’re fragile. I will have to look at them closer and decode into English.” The young woman hated lying to her grandmother. If she told her the truth, more drama would erupt and right now; the young Ackerman wasn’t in the mood for another drama.
Of course, Historia felt her granddaughter was not being honest to her, but she will let it slide. Maybe after she comes back, they will talk about it.
“Alright then. Do you need the driver to take you to the airport?” Historia offered her help.
“Yeah that would be appreciative. Thank you, grandma.” The dark haired woman said.
After she left the palace, Natasha arrived at the International airport. The heiress got through security measurements until she finally entered her terminal where the plane awaits for passengers. She goes find her seat number. As Natasha Ackerman took her seat, a man who was already seated by the window had taken a glance at her. The heiress was minding her own business until she saw the man staring at her.
“May I help you?” She said annoyingly. If this is some under covered paparazzi, she’ll throw him out of the window.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to stare at you.” He went back to reading his book.
The brunette also went back to reading but she took another quick glance at the man which by the way, he was hot. He probably has long hair since it was tied into a bun only a few strands of hair sticks out from the forehead. The one thing that caught her attention was his emerald green eyes.
For hours the flight was boring. Not once has that hot guy haven’t started a conversation. She probably made a bad impression. She made a yawning sound since dawn is about to rise soon. The heiress can take a couple hours nap before the plane arrives at her destination. Her eyes slowly closed as she fell asleep. While in a deep sleep, her head slowly leans to lay on the hot stranger’s shoulder. A light deep chuckle was heard along a few words.
“Always and forever, Eve.” Natasha doesn’t know whether it was a dream or not. The way it sounds had made her feel safe and sound. It was the best two hour nap she ever had. When she woke up, almost everyone was gone including the hot guy. She was about to get up, but the woman saw a winter rose on her lap. The heiress picked it up and smelled the rose. This strange man was mysterious and smooth. Whoever was this guy, he made her day.
(End flashback)
Eve had looked back from the events that lead to now. The time machine that she helped to make it work had glitched which sent her to this era. Luckily, it was in Paradis, but it was the time where this side of the world was going through a huge change that caused a huge war. She remembered World History about Eldian history along with those affected. What’s worse is that she encountered and fell in love with one of the notorious historical figures, Eren Jaeger. The brunette let out a frustrating scream then kicked the poor little rock on the ground.
“Damn you, Eren. Why did you have to walk into my life?” She sighed. How long had she been here? Weeks? Months? It felt like years and Eve just missed home where she can cuddle up in her bed while eating coffee flavor ice cream with oreos while watching some cheesy romantic movies on Netflix.
She saw a group of people with green caped hoods. The Ackerman from the future quickly hides within the trees. The heir decided to climb up to hide better. As she was about to grab the branch close to her reach, it snapped which she fell from the tree. Eve closed her eyes to wait for the hard fall. Instead, she opened her eyes to see a very familiar green eyes.
“Eve, you should be careful. These woods are dangerous. What are you doing here by the way?” Eren said while carrying her in bridal style.
The heiress realized Eren had caught her from falling. This feels awkward and painful. His hurtful words were still fresh on her mind. She glared at him then scoffed.
“I don’t need to explain myself to you so I would appreciate it if you would put me down.” She said with a cold tone.
Eren wasn’t amused with her coldness towards him. After all, he did leave things on bad terms. “Did you follow me? Damn you woman. You just can’t take a hint of rejection.”
Oh no. He did not just say that. Natasha’s pride begins to boil with rage. That asshole has some nerves.
“Excuse me? Like hell, I would follow you! Seriously, are you this much of a dick? You know what. I’m just gonna leave.” She humped, then turned around to leave. Eren stopped her by grabbing her arm.
“Hey, wait. It’s best to come with us since you’ll get yourself lost here.” She glanced at him annoyingly.
“I can handle myself, thanks.” She said stubbornly.
“Eve, I’m serious. I don’t want you to be alone in the woods especially when we’re at war.” His tone had become a bit aggressive due to her stubbornness.
“Why do you care? You left me at the inn. You made it clear that all I was someone to warm up your bed.” Tears were threatening to come out, but she was holding in.
“I care enough for an innocent being in the crossfire when shit goes down.” Eren said.
“How fucking noble you are?” She said sarcastically.
Eren grunt from her attitude. Without saying much, he gripped her arm to drag her to where the Garrison and MPs soldiers were making campgrounds for the night.
“Hey, let go! Eren, where are you taking me?” She was trying to free herself from his strong grip.
“You ask too much.” He grumbled. They reached the campsite.
“Jaeger! Who do you have here?” One of the garrison soldiers shouted as they were spotted.
The heiress gave up the struggle as Eren took her. “Just a bratty acquaintance that I know back at Trost.”  This made her scoffed at him.
“Oh hello there, dollface. I’m Rick. What’s your name?” Great. This random soldier is hitting on her. She was about to say something, but Eren beats to it.
“She doesn’t like being called a dollface.” Eren was getting irritated.
“But I don’t mind introducing myself. Hello there, I’m Eve. it’s nice to meet you.” Her tone became too flirty for Eren already glaring at her. She finally jerks her arm off from his grip.
Rick blushed from Eve’s bold gesture. “That’s a pretty name.”
Eve gave one of her man-eating smirk. “You don’t mind showing me around the campsite, soldier.” She wrapped her arms around the garrison soldier’s arm which he gladly led her to the campsite leaving a very moody Eren behind.
(Eren)
Oh the inner conflict he’s struggling with not grabbing Eve and claiming those addictive lips. This isn’t just a cute jealousy that he usually gets. This is the angry jealousy. Damn her, she definitely can get him under his skin. Eren closed his eyes as he took a deep breath to calm down.
“Don’t lose it. Fight.” He mumbled to himself.
Eren started walking. Connor stopped him. “What’s wrong? You look like a bobcat ready to attack.”
“It’s nothing. I just have a headache.” The titan shifter walked away. Connor glanced to see the strange girl talking to the fiery red hair soldier.
While Eren was walking to start making his tent, a cough sound was heard behind him. He turned around to see it was Commander Dok.
“Oh hello Commander Dok. Is there something you need to talk about?” Eren gave his attention to the Commander of the Military Police.
“Yes. Matter in fact, why did you bring a stranger to our secret campsite? We don’t know if the girl is a spy for the invaders. Her accent is not from here or even Marley. I know you want to redeem yourself for the betrayal and the atrocities you have caused in Marley. You’re making it difficult to have my complete trust in you and it’s not just me feeling this way. Commander Rico Brzenska of the Garrison branch also had her mistrust with you.” Niles said.
“Commander, I understand you and Brzenska are on edge, especially the templars that took over the island. Eve is not a spy I assure you. She probably followed me since we left on bad terms. She’s harmless. Both of you have nothing to worry about.” Eren took a glimpse at his ex who was still being too friendly with the other soldier.
Niles sighed and nodded. “She’s your responsibility if she does anything suspicious, Jaeger.”
Eren nodded in response. “Of course, sir.”
Niles walked away to let the titan shifter finish setting his tent. Again, the Eldian man took a sneak peak at the spunky woman. She was finally alone which it ease his agonizing heart. He knew this was his fault for leaving her after the promises he told her in their pillow talks. Eren felt the guilt for breaking her heart as the scene of her reaction when he told her off.
It’s like the Path pulled them together. He can try to distance himself from her, but in the end she will always be in his thoughts. When he met her, Eren was frustrated and distracted. His distraction became curiosity to finally get to know her. Eren quickly focused back on his tent as Eve glanced back at him. Both are stubborn when it comes to their relationship dynamics. He always was the strong, protective alpha hero while as for her; she was playful, fun, and loving. There was another side of Eve that he noticed in their weeks of being together.
The sky started to get a bit dark as the sun slowly set on the horizon. Rico Brzenska glanced at the new girl.
“You. Go be useful and bring firewood.” She ordered Eve which the heiress became annoyed but got up to go into the deeper woods.
“Jaeger, go make sure she does it.” Rico said to Eren who already started walking to follow Eve into the deep woods.
Eren kept walking on the thin path of the woods as it gets dense the further he’s away from the campsite. The woods looked lush green with trees and old huge trunks that laid on the ground for centuries covered in green plants and wildflowers. The moist made the temperature drop a bit cooler, but to the titan shifter it doesn’t bother him. He was getting irritated from not finding his girl- no, she’s not his...anymore.
“Where is she?” He whispered then a familiar purple skirt caught his attention. He turned to spotted Eve picking up a couple of sticks. Slowly, Eren walked towards her.
Eve was aware Eren was tailing after her. She gets up and pretends he doesn’t exist. It only took a few steps for the atmosphere to change between them. Eren felt his predator desiring his prey. All she was a manipulative, promiscuous, vixen. Eren may be the type to get mad easily, but with her it was another level. He remembered earlier the way she flirted with Richie or was it Ricky? He doesn’t care to know about the soldier’s name. Eren watched her pace speed up  until she sprint into running. She had dropped the sticks to speed further. Eren ran after her. The adrenaline of chasing her made his bloodstream pump more.
Eren smirked when Eve trip but recovered from placing her hand on the tree. Her breathing was shallow from the running. He was already behind her pressing his chest on her back which she became stiff.
“I know what you were trying to do earlier with that soldier.” His voice became raspy. He can hear her heart beating faster. His warm breath tickling her ear and neck.
The heiress bit her lips from not letting out a single moan or sound. Oh god, he’s making it harder to hate him. Of course, she can’t hate him. He’s always known how to drive her crazy for him. How his sexy voice made her panties ruin. She let her eyes closed to continue listening to his godly husky tone.
“You have been pissing me off, baby. Trying to make me jealous huh?” A growl had escaped from his lips.
“Trying? I had no intention of making you jealous.” Eve finally speaks.
“Don’t play dumb with me, Eve. I know you. I gotta give it to you. You’re persistent. There’s one question that’s bothering me the most.” He said
“What would that be?” She said.
“Why didn’t the power of the Founding Titan work on you to erase your memories of me?” Eren had that question from the back of his mind since he caught her from falling from the tree.
Eve had stayed quiet again. She is trying so hard to not want to answer that question. It should affect her since she has Eldian blood in her. Unless, she is a descendant of the Ackerman clan like Mikasa and Captain Levi.
“I want you to be honest with you, Eve.” He tried to change his tone to softer for her. All she did was laugh like it was the funniest joke.
“Honest? You are a funny guy to be demanding me to be honest with you, Eren Jaeger.” Her grey eyes glared dangerously in a way that’s familiar to him again.
“Ever since I met you, you haven’t been honest with me either. You didn’t want to tell me of your plans whenever you claimed you had meetings to go. Recently, you have been pinning me on the tree because you got possessive of me. For a man who claims to have no feelings for me; this shouldn’t bother you whether who I flirt with.” Both lock their eyes in a staring contest.
“So if you want me to be honest then you fucking better stop with your bullshit of pushing and pulling my heart. I know you still love me and feel that desire just as much I feel for you. Eren, whatever this secret it is, I will share your burden. I love you so much that I don’t want you to feel alone in this secret plan you needed to do. Maybe, I can offer you another alternative if you need it.” Now, her tone became compassionate.
“There’s no alternative way if there were I would choose the best and safest one.” He said.
“How would you know that? Have you considered it?” She said.
“No, but trust me I know. I have the knowledge of truth. I saw how the future will become if I don’t do it.” He was getting frustrated. A part of him wants to tell her, but it’s too risky for anyone to know even for her. Eren doesn’t want anything terrible to happen to her. Just as she said, he loves her.
“Then tell me what did you see in the future? I want to understand you. Let me in, please.” Her hands are placed on his cheeks to gently caress them.
“I can’t. Please, understand that. I want to protect you and our people. It’s better than my brother’s method on saving Eldians.” He scoffed at the idea that Zeke had to save the Eldians.
“What was your brother’s plan? Can you at least tell me that?” She was curious what his brother had in mind to save the Eldian race?
“He wanted to sterilize all Eldians in order to stop the curse by dying out slowly and peacefully.” He explained.
“That’s an indirect genocide.” She was a bit distrubed.
“We don’t deserve to die out so in a way I betray my brother by doing this. That’s the future I want to see where Eldians are free from the curse and are at peace to live and enjoy this world that’s our birthright.” He said.
“No, we don’t. Nobody deserves to be annihilated as well…” She whispered. This caught his attention. Does she….had she figured it out what’s his plan?” His green eyes glared at her.
“You knew it. How did you figure out my plan? Eve, you have been mysterious since we met. So tell me, who are you for real? Is Eve even your real name?” His tone was skeptical.
“I...Eren, if I told you, you might think I’m crazy or making shit up.” Her eyes looked afraid  but not because of him.
“I don’t think whatever you’ll say will top for the crazy shit I have seen through the Path, but you can try to humor me.” Eren still giving a pinning stare.
“First of all, Eve is my name. Well, my middle name. I’m Natasha Eve Ackerman-Stark. I’m the granddaughter of Queen Historia Ackerman nee Reiss and King Consort Levi Ackerman. Basically, I’m from the future.” Natasha waits nervously for his reaction.
Eren blinked at first taking in this information. He doesn’t know what to say. It kind of made all sense how she had strengthened, sharp aiming skills. Now that he observed better, she got Levi’s colored eyes but her eye shape could be more on her mother's side. He would have not believed her if he hadn’t seen her Ackerman traits that gave away. That also makes sense in why she was immune to the Founding Titan power. He can’t believe she’s from the future. What actually happened? Did his plan work? Are we free? These questions were taking over his thoughts.
“Eren...please say something.” Natasha whispered in worry.
“I’m just taking all in from what you just said. So their baby survived? Wow, if Levi finds out I slept with his granddaughter; I don’t think he’ll let me live.” He chuckled at that thought. The heiress grumbled at that thought.
“Yeah well, he got no saying about my love life.” her tone sounded resentment.
“Do you have a good relationship with Levi?” He was curious.
“Not really. I don’t have a good relationship with them. Our mindsets are a bit different.” She doesn’t want to talk about her issues with her grandparents yet.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” He said. “So what happened or is that against  the rules when you traveled to the past?”
“We are still cursed but with good foreign relations with the rest of the world, the United Nations are now involved in managing to make sure who gets to inherit the nine titans so any babies with the blood of Subject Of Ymir won’t inherit when they are born. There’s still discrimination but segregation like in Marley had become illegal including every nation since a special law was passed to protect ever Eldians.” She explained.
“Ah I see. So what happened to me?” If he somehow tried to wipe out the rest of the world except Eldians then there’s a chance he would not live.
“What the history books say, you were executed for treason to the military and to my grandmother as she represents the nation of Paradis, but I heard rumors that they fake it to please the other nations as their agreement for the treaty Paradis have with the rest of the world. You were known as a war criminal and anti- humanity to everyone who studied history. Some say you are still alive and locked away in the deep deep grounds in a secret lab being studied like a labrat until the curse kills you.” Eren grunted. In the end no one was free. They were still cursed and he probably was a slave to be a test subject for titan science.
“That doesn’t sound right. I should be dead either way since I have a few years left.” Eren said.
“I wish it was true the rumor so when I do go back my time, I can free you.” her tone sounded sad. She thought what the future Eren will be like? Is he cold? How do they treat him? But like he said, he’ll be gone way before her existence.
 It’s best to just appreciate he is here and ok. She grabs his hand to press her palm to his. Eren looked down curiously at her. He let her do whatever she tended to do with his hand.
“I’ll be dead so you don’t have to worry about freeing me.” He whispered. Eren pulled her gently to have their bodies pressed against each other.
“When are you going back to your time?” He continues.
“Um, I don’t know...the thing is I came here accidentally. I was helping a colleague with a time machine, the facility I worked at. So, I’m stuck until I figure out how to get back home.” She doesn’t want to leave even without him.
“You know, I never planned to fall for you, Eren Jaeger. You are nothing like what history has taught us. You’re much more humane than most people my nana used to deal with as a CEO.” Her arms wrap around his neck which his hands place on her hips.
“Same, you have been a distraction to my plan. In a way, history has changed because of you. The world better be thanking you for that.” He said jokingly. Eren kissed her forehead affectionately. “Eve or I should call you Natasha?”
“To be safe, let’s stick to Eve.” She said.
“Alright, but I want to say I’m sorry. I’m sorry for hurting you. I don’t mean to say these words at the inn. I thought it was best for you to hate me so you don’t get closer to me when I did plan on going through eradicating the population except Eldians. WHen I realized that I have fallen for you, I got scared thinking of losing you. I did the same with Armin and Mikasa. Armin forgave me but Mikasa; I don’t think she will ever.” Eren confessed.
“Eren, I forgive you. I felt relieved you still feel the same way about me as I do to you. Don’t give up on Mikasa, a person who has cared about you for a long time will not easily hold a grudge against you. Just give her time, but don’t be scared to tell how sorry you are and as for her forgiveness.” She punched his arm which he rubbed his arm.
“Hey what was that.” He pouted.
“That’s for you being an idiot in believing all the people who cared about you will hate you easily for planning an apocalyptic disaster. I know you said there’s no other way, but can you try to consider it? I don’t want to lose my other family. I know they didn’t do anything wrong. Some didn't deserve it.” Eren sighed. If the outcome hasn’t happened as he hoped for then maybe he’ll consider it.
“The only thing I want to know is how will the curse be broken?” Eren wants to be cursed to be destroyed to free their people from being hated and feared by the rest of the world. That's one of his big concerns.
“We’ll figure it out together. Plus, I have a talent for finding very hidden documents. So we’ll make sure our people will not have to worry about it.” She assured him and gave one of her warmth smiles.
“Jaeger! Eve! Where are you?” A familiar voice was heard by those two. Eren pulled Eve to hide behind a very wide tree as they saw Ricky or whatever his name was. Now Eren’s mood had shifted to annoyance.
“Seriously, why does he have to come? He’s probably volunteering to be close to you.” He grumbled. Eve blushed embarrassingly. Yeah, she does have flaws to pissed off people or make them jealous. She felt guilty for making him feel that way, She was so hurt that she wanted to see him be hurt too.
Eren noticed her face blushed which made his annoyance become irritated. He possessively wraps his arm around her waist to hold her closer to him. Once the garrison soldier gives up and goes back to the campsite, both are alone again. This time Eren turned her to face him. She was about to speak when his lips crashed against hers. The fiery feeling spread all over her body. She moaned how passionate and deep his kiss had become. Her fingers move up to his long hair to run through it. Low key, seeing Eren this jealous made her belly flutter. The way his green eyes become intense and darken; it’s just too irresistible for her. Eren pushed her against the tree to pin her again. The pleasure consuming both as the lusting feeling drunkenly blinded them.
Eve was her own person that Eren knows, but he’s possessive. He wanted to leave his markings on her so others would back off. Their dynamic is like those impulsiveness couples that are addictive and passionate with each other. He loved how her body responded to his touches. It’s like only he has the power to make her tremble and beg for more. The same vice versa as how Eve acts towards him. In a way they are both similar. They made be in the woods but that won’t stop to go further. Their bodies already yearn for each other. His hands had unbuttoned her blouse to run his tongue all over her exposing breasts.
Soft moans were coming from her own lips. She was panting loud and heavy. It made Eren’s prides swell from seeing her looking like a hot mess. His hand goes under her purple skirt to feel how soaking wet her panties are. His lips hovered to her ear.
“My dollface is so wet for me. Isn’t that right, baby? Come on, speak.” He said huskily.
“Mmmm I-I...Eren.” She struggled to form a sentence. He chuckled how lost she is from his touch. His finger slides her panties down as one of her legs is removed so only her panties dangle on the other leg.
“Come on, babe, answer my question.” He teased her. Eren resumed attending her nipples with his mouth which Eve let out a squeal.
“Fuck...Eren I-I a-am w-wet for y-you.” Finally she completed her phrase.
“Good girl. Remember I’m the only one who can make you wet.” He continued whispering to her. All she could feel was his fingers inside her deep. She started to rock her hips grinding in and out of his fingers. Eren is amused at how eager she is for him. His finger was covered in her warm slick when he pulled out to see.
“Eren, I need you.” She began to make way to his pants from undoing it. He stopped her then pinned her hands over her head on the tree. “Why should I allow you to get what you want? You've been a bad girl earlier.”
“I’m sorry, I’ll be a good girl.” Eve biting her lips. She’s definitely a seductress. Eren’s manhood throbbing to be free in his pants. He grunts at being allured to her desire. He planned to just tease her to learn her lesson.
He subconsciously begins to unbutton his pants to pull down a bit low enough for his cock to be free.  Eren hiked up her long skirt to have her leg lift to be placed on his hip while inserting his cock into her hole. The heiress tilted her head up to moan how good it feels to have him stretching her walls. He stared into her eyes as his hips began to thrust hard and deep. They feel the blissful sensation from being so intimated with each other. He kisses her neck as the woods are now dark but the moonlight shines on where they stand. To Eren, Eve looked like a goddess of the night seducing a man like him. He loved how the moonlight soaks into her skin that gives off a glow. He continues thrusting into her with a bit more roughness. He doesn’t want to speed up to make this mystical sight before him last longer. Her chocolate brown hair spread on the tree trunk. He listens to the echoes of her moanings  and whimpers.
Yes, she is his. No matter the outcome; they always belong together. He’ll fight for that.
“You’re always mine. Even when we get separated, you’re mine. I love you always and forever.” He proclaimed.
“You’re always mine too. Just don’t ever pull that shit on me again. I love you always forever.” The titan shifter saw her tears fall and he kissed it from the guilt he felt how he treated her even if it was for her sake.
Eren sped up a bit more to increase the high of pleasure for both of them. “Ohh god ohh fuck Eren.” Her moaning became loud while he growls and groans. Finally, he let out a moan when he made a release inside her soon after Eve came as well. Both stopped to rest for a second then slowly Eren pulled out to clean his tip before tucking his cock back into his pants and button again.
Eve started to slide her panties back up then button up her blouse. She fixes her long skirt appropriately and her hair to look presentable.
“Oh shit, it’s dark and I’m gonna get yelled for not bringing sticks for the fire.” She forgot what was her main purpose being in the woods. “You can be such a distraction.”
Eren winked then grabbed her hand to lead her back to the campsite. “I’m not sorry. We’ll get some on our way back to the camp.”
Along their way back, both of them gather many sticks of wood to burn for the fire. By the time they got to their destination, Rico glared at the both of them.
“Well well, are you both done fucking like two animals during heat season? Next time, bring the woods when I order too. Seriously, you both have some weird kinks in being loud enough for anyone very close to hear.” Luckily, her voice wasn’t loud for anyone to hear her calling both couples out. Eren and Eve blushed embarrassingly from being scolded like misbehaving teenagers. After Rico finished scolding, she left them alone for them to place the wood close to the pit. Eren let Eve for her to put some wood into the fire to make it big to warm around the campsite. He walked to where Connor was resting against the log. “You look happy for once.” Connor glanced at him. Eren had a smile from the event that happened in the woods. “Yeah.”
“Good, don’t let her get away. I had a woman like her, but I was stupid enough to push her away. Don’t make the same  mistake I did, kid.” The Assassin closed his eyes to resume his nap.
Joey Meeting Cas’s Parents.
Time is a thought pattern and measurement made up by the human mind. Sometimes we use it to keep track of important days and events in our lives. Sometimes it seems to take forever, and other days it seems to pass like one is going through a time machine. Just one hour, just 60 minutes, 60 seconds within each one of those individual minutes, is all I have to convince them. These were the thoughts that ran across Cas’s mind as he finished tying his dark ocean blue tie. The blue popped and drew one’s eye away from the rest of the swan white suit. “My Sunday best” Cas signed softly in a mocking tone before nervously picking at the loose ends in the fabric. His bright seafoam eyes darted to the grandfather clock standing in the hallway.
The clock was a gift from this great grandmother on his mother’s side. It stood at a height of 7 feet and was the tallest being in the house. It was made of dark oak wood that could be found in any fairy tale forest. The clock has a man-made touch that ruined its magic. The golden hands shined like the sun on a pleasant summer day and it had a little ticking sound that sounded like a robin’s morning cry to the world. This was what Cas’s parent’s found perfect for their home and their traditions.
If there is one thing to be known about Cas Rare’s family is that traditions are everything to them and they have kept some very old ones alive. There are always the weird ones, like knocking three things before entering the office and the kitchen, and then of course some more serious ones. For example, poor Cas knew this one too well, everyone in his family had married their high school sweetheart without fail. Some are still together though that’s not the case for most of the family. That doesn’t matter to the Rares though, as long as the action happens then to them the tradition is still kept.
Then a loud ringing broke the silence that swallowed the emotionally empty home whole. Cas jumped back towards his old light brown bed with the many shades of green plants surrounding it. “That’s just the doorbell, take a breath you’re okie. Gods, you’re such a nervous wreck don’t let them see into your eyes. Act normal.” His inner voice yelled at him hoping he would understand the importance of this. Cas shook his head to clear any emotion from his face. Even though he’s the master at faking a poker face, the one thing that usually gives him away is his eyes. There’s a saying that the eyes are the window to the soul and with Cas, that statement is most definitely true. He started his journey down the seemingly endless hallway heading to what he considered a death wish though others would just call it a set of stairs.
The old woodland stairs creaked as he made his way down, carefully counting out how many seconds it took him to get to the bottom. “Your girlfriend is late,” a cold and disapproving voice called out from the kitchen. Girlfriend, what an odd word thought Cas. This wasn’t the first time he heard that word in the romantic sense and probably wouldn’t be the last. His parents, teachers, teammates, and even some of the town folks ask him how a young man like him is still single. He’s the captain of the football team, on the student console, and the vice president. He’s a straight-A student and even helps with the school’s volunteering program. They say he’s the faithful son and a model student. They claim Cas is fulfilling the American dream.
Little do they realize that Cas has been hiding a huge secret. A secret he learned to keep from a young age and what happens when you don’t. The sad part is the town may have the occasional jerk but that’s not why Cas guards this secret with his life. How does one explain to the people who claim to love you unconditionally that you’re the thing they hate the most? That no matter what you do you can’t change it. How does one explain to a person with a strong homophobic belief that you’re part of the community?
“I’m sorry sir; she lives across town and most likely lost track of time” Cas called back to his father while straightening his back. “Hmm, that's the disappointing son. A young girl should know to respect others' time.” Mr. Rare called back, his voice holding the same emotion and tone as his words. Cas signed to himself before jogging over to the tall doorway that seems to tower over anyone with an avenger human height. He knew parents hate surprises and they're about to get a big one. Good thing they don’t have any heart issues, he joked softly in his mind.
When he opened the door, he could not believe his eyes. There stood his boyfriend in a black suit with the coat opened to show off a salmon pink shirt. His usual long, wavy light and a slight orangish-brown hair braided showing off his side cut. Of course, he was wearing his tall black boots under his suit and was holding a gift of pretty greens and sunset pink roses. “Wow, those roses do draw your eyes out dear,” Cas smiled at his boyfriend while feeling both jumpy and at peace.“Sorry for being late love!” The short man explained quickly, “I told Jackie I wanted to pick up some flowers for you, and I lost track of time.” Jackie was an older brother figure to Joey Light and had taken him in when he was twelve-thirteen years old. Now being 16 Joey had a sense of getting used to his new life and this town...for the most part at least. Sometimes he forgets about how the locals are stuck in their old ways and the dangers that hold.
“You’re ten mintu-” “Ooo, is she here now?” Mrs. Rare cut off Mr. Rare running from the kitchen to greet who she thought was going to be her future daughter-in-law.
Mrs.Rare is the president of the books for kids program, and many in the town love her for her general kindness to others. If someone needs a helping hand, usually, Mrs.Rare is there. If it wasn't for her the town’s new and improved library wouldn’t exist. Though Mrs.Rare has a darker side to her that not many had seen. She has this undercurrent of believing she was above you and a slight god complex.
“Oh,” She stated gently while her honey-dyed hair swayed from side to side. “Hello, May I ask your name child?” Mrs. Rare hummed, placing her hands on her waist, as a small power move. Joey smiled trying to come off confident stating “Hello Mrs.Rare, my name is Joey” mentally cursing himself for not sounding more “proper” before widening his smile. Joey can feel Mrs.Rare’s eyes judging him while trying to give off the “I’m like second mother” vibes.
“I’m sorry hon, but I’m afraid that Cas is busy tonight. His girlfriend is coming over to finally meet the family!” she says quickly before placing her hand onto Cas’s arm with a small pulling motion. Joey was about to speak up, but Cas conquered him. “Actually mother, Joey is supposed to be over here. I want to explain it to you and father during dinner” his right hand was grabbing his left wrist and rubbing it in circles. Mrs. Rare’s eyes were processing but stopped and went dilated for a minute. They darted from Cas to Joey a few times before saying “Please come in” while rushing to the dining room.
The air in the room seemed to disappear at that moment and Cas felt like he was in outer space. All the noises of the world were muted for the purest minute, and objects were floating. Cas nearly felt like a sleepwalker as Joey seized hold of his hand. He was the sunshine in this world and was a burning candle in this gloomy house. Smiling at his boyfriend, the two of them made their way to the dining room, mentally preparing for whatever battle faced them.
The room was massive with a huge chandelier of shades of white and baby blue hanging down from the ceiling shining all over. There was an extensive dark oak table that usually is only used for meetings and fancy gales. Tonight the table will be a battleground between two opposing sides. Joey recalled how in this situation he felt like a tiny mouse trying to hide from the humans who had enough misfortune to discover him in their kitchen. He tried not to reveal his fear though and puffed out his chest standing next to Cas.
“You’re 11 minutes late, Miss” Mr.Rare called out, entering the dining room with his wife behind him carrying drinks for the small group. Mr. Rare was a tall man with the air of being a naturally born leader. He had these honey brown eyes that always seemed to be looking down at you and a mouth that seems to be just a thin stick. The people voted him for mayor because he reminded them of an old wartime warrior. Tough and gets what needs to be completed. He was surprisingly good with people and especially those of the older generation.
Joey quickly took a step forward trying to seem confident and not like he was wanting to walk straight back out the door. Fear is something he would never let win, and he wasn’t going to start today. He raised his hand and looked Mr. Rare in the eyes. Joey may be short and a tiny guy but he has a lot of guts and attitude to make up for it. “Hello, Mr.Rare. My name is Joey Light, and I deeply apologize for being late. I thought it would be the gentleman thing to get your son some flowers.”
Cas loved and hated when Joey did this. He tried to hide the forming smile on his face while trying not to be petrified that Joey had said that while looking his father dead in the eyes. “Excuse me Father; Joey is my guest tonight, I should have told you early.” Cas quickly explained stepping slightly in between Joey and his father. His father raised one eye to the two men and nodded gently before saying “I see...why don’t we sit down and have some lovely food that your mother made for us?
Mrs. Rare quickly set down the glasses on the table and explained that she’ll be right back with some silverware. Mr. Rare took a seat at the usual spot-the head of the table while Cas took out a chair for Joey. The sitting arrangement planned out the week before was Mr.Rare at the head of the table, Mrs.Rare on the right side of him, Cas’s “girlfriend” on the left side of Mr.Rare, and Cas next to his “girlfriend.” Cas knew his father would be annoyed about him changing it up last minute, but he also wanted to keep Joey safe. Even as Mr.Rare was glaring at his son as he sat on the left side of him.
After 5 minutes Mr.Rare appeared with a huge smile on her face that was the opposite of her eyes. “Here’s the silverware” She hummed before taking a seat at her throne and poured some water into everyone’s glass. She looked like a lioness with her curly frame and long face. There was a silence that felt like forever to Cas and he knew his parents wanted an explanation. This was a power game, and he was smart enough to give in first. He made the mental note that he had 39 minutes left to convince his parents not to kick him out of the family.
Clearing his voice, Cas said “Father, Mother, I know you're expecting my girlfriend to come tonight for dinner but-” “Ah yes, I was wondering when she would be here.” his father chimed in looking at him with a confused look. Cas felt like a deer in headlights and felt his heart skip a beat. Joey quickly grabbed Cas’s hand under the table and gave it a comforting squeeze. Cas looked up to a soft smile that he knew was a rare sight.
He took a breath and continued making sure he was strong with his tone “I’m afraid she can’t come tonight because she doesn’t exist.” Cas let his eyes travel to his mother’s face which was the perfect look of surprise and to his father’s- the eyebrow raised again but there’s a fire in his eyes now. No one said anything as there was this moment of silence before Mrs.Rare looked over to Mr.Rare.
“What do you mean she doesn’t exist?” She singed gently while straightening her back. She had that same fire that Cas’s father has, though hers represent more expression. Cas jerked his head and spoke louder hoping it would aid him to sound more sure, “I mean she doesn't exist. Mother, Father, I’m a part of the lgbtq+ community- technically Bi. I would like to introduce you to my boyfriend Joey Light.” Joey smiled at his boyfriend. It was the first time he heard his boyfriend stand up for himself and he was proud. Though he retained enough knowledge to prepare for the fight that was about to go down.
Mr. Rare spat out the water he was drinking before loudly saying “You’re what?!”If it wasn’t for the situation the look on his face would have been comical. His eyes darted between the two boys processing what he just heard. The corners of his mouth twitched into a smile before he started laughing. The laugh was hollow and seemed more than just fake. It scared everyone at the table a little bit.
Mrs. Rare had a better reaction by just sitting there staring down at her food with a slight smirk on her face. Cas didn’t know which reaction was the worst. He knew this was very out of character for his parents.
“Hahaha, you tell the best jokes son” Mr.Rare laughed out before wiping away some of the tears from his eyes “You genuinely had me fooled for a minute.” Cas felt his cheeks turn a rosily pink shade before speaking up again, “I’m not joking Father…”. Now it was his mother that spoke up with that smile; looked smug before explaining to a child why they can’t have a cookie before dinner “Honey you can’t be bi, it’s just so unnatural and a choice. Besides, why would you date a man if you like women?”
“Excuse me?” Joey, who’s been quiet the whole dinner, finally spoke up with his usual amount of sass. “This is why you’re uncomfortable whenever your folks get brought up in the conversion darling?” Joey said promptly, altering his voice into a honey-like texture while turning to face Cas. Cas could merely bob his head and tried to think of a way to quickly diffuse the situation at hand.
Mr. Rare stood up and pointed a finger at Joey getting more and more angry stating “Young man, who do you think you're talking to? She has a very reasonable statement. Thank God he is only Bi, there’s still hope then.” Now he is getting up and walking behind Mrs.Rare’s chair placing his hands on her shoulders.
The room was divided down the middle between the parents and the young boys. One side was the older generation with their traditions and the newer generation with a wave of change. The two were different colors: blue and red, dark and light, the sun and moon...etc.
“Still hope? Sir with all due expectations that is a horrible thing to say. So what if Cas likes girls and guys, he’s still a great person and an amazing friend. ”Joey knew he was taking charge where he shouldn’t, but he didn’t care. The only care on his mind right now was protecting Cas.
“Great Person?” Mrs. Ruth questioned raising her drinking glass to make a toast. Humming, she stared at the young men sitting in front of her deciding her words carefully. “I know what you’re kind does. They think they’re so special and for what? You had a choice to make, and you chose to go against society. Everything could be normal if your generation just followed the guidelines in place!”
Cas looked down at the table with a look of pure rage while his hands were shaking. Emotions that he had been burying were traveling to the surface and threatening to spill over. His voice was barely above a whisper when he made his statement “Choice? Do you think we get a choice? Do you think I would choose to be afraid of telling people who I’m dating? You think it’s a choice to have to hide a part of my identity, so I don’t get jumped? You think I would choose to spend every day being judged by people like you!” His voice was growing in volume and emotions during the whole speech. In the end, Cas felt his cheeks burn from embarrassment and tears stung his eyes.
There was an air of quiet where one can feel the energy in the room through the walls. Both boys were standing by now, Cas trying not to break down and Joey comforting him while shooting dirty looks at Cas’s parents. Mr.Rare was watching with a hateful look at the young boys' interaction, and Mrs.Rare was nearly shaking her head at this display.“You’re being just like your sister. You know why we disowned her.” Mr.Rare coldly stated and started to look at this watch as bored with everything going on.
“Older sister?” Joey questioned and was caught off guard by this statement. He never realized or thought to ask if Cas even had any siblings. He solely thought he was an only child and that’s why Cas’s folks were exceedingly hard on him. Cas shook his head before adding a sign. “At least use his pronouns, he uses him/him” Cas continued looking tired, probably because he had this conservation a million times before about his brother. “What, did you kick his brother out for coming out of the closet?” Joey joked while a smirk on his face until the realization struck him.
“You disowned him? Wow, you’re undoubtedly an unpleasant person. I mean, I encountered some pathetic people but you guys take the cake.” Joey’s voice was harsh like an icy storm while he was leading closer to the parents.“I know you don’t like it, but things are changing. You can’t stop change. You either could change with it or get left in the past.”
Mr. Rare was going to reply when the grandfather could be heard clicking and ticking. He frowned and looked down at his wife who merely smiled back. “Cas we will continue this conversion later, your mother and I have a town meeting.” Mr. Rare called softly before both of the parents walked out of the room. The boys know that this is the first of many fights to come but they're not going to give up. They got each other, and they know they’ll make it just fine. Cas may have not been able to convince his parents in an hour, but it’s a step.
So Sofia, I know it’s been a long time. Few years more or less and I know you hate me for it. I promise I’m not gonna say I’m sorry. I’m gonna say... I was attempting to save the planet. I love you. Your mother passed last year, and I made this site for you to know some things about her. That no one else probably would tell you. She was the Bomb dot Com. I promise.
Me and your mother met when I was 17 and fresh out of high school at Oxford Highschool, In Oxford Missippi. It’s where your aunt Shea lives now and she owns a hair salon. It’s on Jackson Ave, Emma J Salon. (You’re always welcome there) I was living in a house with some friends as roommates and doing odd jobs for money. The day your mother walked in with her friends Mikey, I was doing some dumb stuff. Like getting a tattoo. With a tattoo machine, that I built. (Trust me, I know I’m not smart, I’m just good at the not Dumb part)
So anyways, Im getting a anagram life-death tattoo on my right inside forearm. with about 5 of us each taking turns drawing it. The machine was made out of a remote controlled car motor, a pen, a guitar string, and a spoon. LOL. Trust me I used to be kinda a redneck. When your mother walked in. Brown eyes, that lit up in the sun. A smile that killed. and the one thing I dont know if I actually miss or not, but she had an attitude. The most BOSS woman i’d ever heard speak.
So Nikki is sitting there in the back room with me as i’m getting this tattoo done. and mikey and Yak go run an errand, and I can’t help but just be dumb grinning at your mom. She was awesome. Heres some cool things your mom can do. Below.
She was almost an Olympic gymnast or something like that.
She was an undercover cop in New Orleans. (I currently live here Sofi. It’s Home)
She was a, no THE OG. And sweetheart I’m not even joking.
Kickbox or something. She whipped ass.
Sing, and dance. And she loved art.
She could read tarot cards.
Some Cool facts about you now. You were born in Brunswick, GA at 2.29pm The only reason you were born in brunswick is because the island didn’t have a hospital. Your first days were as an Island Girl. (St Simons Island) - Your great grandmother on my side was born in Trinidad. Your grandfather on my side was born on St. Kitts. And my parents were married on St Simons. You must return soon to see it.
Your mothers favorite color or colors, if I recall correctly were Gray and Lavender. I’m not 100% sure, but I know that those are also my favorite colors.
Her favorite animals. Ones that she resonated with. Or connected with. Were Owls, she loved them. Lions, and I believe she liked the Dragonfly I’m not sure about the last one either. It’s been a long time since me and her spoke.
Your mother also kept journals. And taught me the number one rule of journals which was never open a persons journal unless they ask you too.
And finally the best part. I’ve been in hundreds and hundreds of fights. (NO FIGHTING SOFI) and only had 1 person break my nose. Guess who. Your mother. And I’ve never been knocked out either. Swear to God.
I love you baby. Seriously. I know your still in Pa, Probably at mom moms and I Miss you every second. But I’m working on getting that situated. It’s gonna take a bit of time.
Remember that the time we spend apart, you spend with mom mom, Bond. Enjoy her company. Learn her wisdom and lessons. Because she is getting.. Old. Let the anger at me be something you two use as a. a something.
{ odeya rush ♔ twenty-three ♔ she/her } well, well, well if it isn’t rowan foster running around peach hollow. legend has it, she comes from tangerine towers and has lived here her entire life. if you’re wondering what she’s been up to, i hear she’s a make up artist / freelance musician for a living. she has been known to be impulsive yet insightful. a word of advice to her, always look over your shoulder. you never know who is watching.
why yes, it is i, admin kim, with another character that should’ve been kept in the drafts of my mind. if you’ve not met daysia or serenity, here’s a lil low down on me. i’m 26, i use she/her pronouns, and live on the east coast. i thrive on writing angst and my animal crossing villagers being happy. also caffeine. i luv chris klemens. most likely to have a mental breakdown on twitter. meet rowan! trigger warnings for mental illness, bipolar disorder specifically, and inpatient treatment
have a playlist and a pinterest board dedicated to her
rowan celeste foster was born may 27th, 1996. she’s the oldest of two, a baby sister coming to the scene in 1999.
her family is extremely close. they’ve been in peach hollow their whole lives. she grew up in a crowded house on blueberry boulevard, crammed in with her mother, father, sister, maternal grandmother and maternal grandfather. rowan never knew peace or privacy growing up – it just wasn’t possible with that many people which has really contributed to her somewhat isolated adulthood
her mother is a charge nurse at peach hollow general, working on the emergency room floor. her father is a retired car salesman. her grandparents moved into the house when her sister was born in order to help take care of the girls while their parents worked full time. rowan is especially grateful for their care, because she feels like she’d be a little more sour had she been raised by absent parents.
growing up, she shared a room with her younger sister. they told each other everything because they had no choice not to. they both developed an interest in make up and music at very young ages, but rowan particularly took to those things while maci took more interest in sports. when rowan was gifted her first ukulele at age 6, maci got her first basketball. they are polar opposites, but maci was the only person rowan really confided in as a child and an adolescent.
she’d always been rather moody. tantrums and fits were nearly unavoidable. her self esteem lacked before she even had a chance to develop any confidence. she was always the try hard, the girl who stood out because she was just a little different, the emotional one, the one the other kids didn’t want to mess with, not because she’d fight back, but because she would absolutely lose it. there were countless times where rowan ended up in the guidance counselor’s office, waiting on her grandmother to show up and bring her home. that was the beginning of their problems.
her mental health really started to decline in her mid teenage years. she spent hours upon hours in her room, writing songs, playing guitar, practicing make up looks – she’d go days without sleeping and snap at anyone who crossed her path. she got into screaming matches with everyone in the house, only to find herself crying in her bed for the next few days. she started missing days at a time from school, while her artistry thrive, the rest of her crumbled. her grades, all of it.
eventually, this resulted in her parents yanking her out of peach hollow high and putting her in counseling, which lead her to a psychiatrist and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder at the age of 17. while it made sense, she dreaded taking the medications. they numbed everything. her writing suffered, and while her moods weren’t swinging from the trees anymore, she feared that this empty feeling was worse.
she finished her high school diploma in homeschooling with her grandmother while maci went on to thrive in school. the attention shifted to her, and rowan couldn’t really blame them. she turned 18 and started performing in clubs, bars, and anywhere she could get in. ps her voice is a mix of bishop briggs & mary lambert. the thrill of performing to small crowds sucked her in. she began to gain an even smaller following on social media, mainly the locals following her. every once in a while she’ll book a show in atlanta and she’ll make the long drive just to sing in front of a bit of a larger crowd. she’ll gain a few followers from those shows, but this still isn’t her main source of income.
most of her money comes from the make up artistry she does through pop of peach. she doesn’t go in every day, but when someone has an event scheduled or needs their make up done for a dance or something, she’s there. she tries to spread things out bc she’s always late lmao and finds it hard to stick to a schedule
she was doing so well for a few years, even moved out of her parents’ house and into an apartment at the towers. that’s where she really found herself, made some real friends and built relationships that were good for her. however, she missed a few doctor’s appointments and was discharged from her psychiatrist’s office. she went off meds, and for a few weeks it was fine. when she ran out of meds, the next few weeks were okay as well. it was when every single drop of medication had drained from her body that things got bad.
rowan was missing appointments she scheduled at pop of peach. she was spending far too much time out at nights, giving in to alcohol for the most part. she tried not to touch any drugs, but drinking became a nightly thing. she’d perform, then spend the rest of the night partying with whoever she could find at the venue.
one night in atlanta after a particularly shaky performance, rowan found herself in a dark place and simply went into the women’s bathroom to calm down, but police say they found her laying flat on the ground, refusing to respond to anyone. she vaguely remembers the end of the manic episode, but it did land her in the emergency room for a change in mental status.
much to her chagrin, they admitted her overnight before transporting her to skyland trail, a mental health facility in atlanta. she spend about two and a half months there getting medications regulated and learning new coping mechanisms. she was discharged about two weeks ago and finally made it back to peach hollow and her apartment.
she’d lead everyone other than her family and maybe one or two other people that she was away on a musician’s retreat, but really, was in inpatient treatment.
she’s currently working full time as a make up artist at pop of peach and performing when she can, but doesn’t really go outside of peach hollow
fun facts & personality
rowan despises small talk. conversations about the weather or political climate don’t stimulate her and she gets snarky pretty easily. it isn’t that she wants to come off rude or unapproachable, but nine times out of ten, small talk is fake and she feels as though she doesn’t have the time or energy to indulge in it. ask her about the sky or some shit. she won’t shut up
she has a tendency to overshare,  aside from what’s been going on in the past few months. her lips are sealed tight about that. however, she’s open to talking about her mental health and is a big advocate for erasing the stigma. this makes rowan a very good listener and a huge supportive presence for anyone struggling. she’s the mom friend, and no matter what time of day or night, if someone says they need an ear, she’ll go to them. she knows what it’s like to be alone.
despite her past and her demons, rowan finds a way to put on a smile. it might often be snarky or sarcastic, but rarely is it insincere. she’s an empath and feels everything so very deeply, but can easily put it away when necessarily.
her apartment is her safe haven. she rarely has company. it isn’t really her thing. she prefers to go to other people’s places. she has her record collection proudly displayed on her living room wall, all the plants you can imagine, incense burning whenever she’s home, and a scottish fold munchkin cat named loonette after her favorite childhood tv show, the big comfy couch. she has hopes to get another cat named molly to match. you know, because we’re all clowns !
she takes great pride in her instagram. it sounds superficial, but often times, rowan will post a good picture and then link to her next show in hopes that somebody will come based on that. while she does have a passion for make up and a second instagram for it, ultimately, she’d like for there to come a time where she can live solely on the money she makes through music
catch her driving her old ass ford focus blaring 00s alternative, mainly fuckin paramore bc she’s heart eyes for hayley williams
wanted connections if ya made it this far!!!!
childhood friends – those who she’s known since elementary school. they’ve most likely watched her go through her many trials and tribulations in class. these could be acquaintances, close friends, or even a ride or die or two.
bullies – people who fucked with her through school. it’s essential that they’re on bad terms currently, but perhaps an enemy turned friend or romantic could be fun??
group therapy pal – this would be super fun and might entail the person finding out about her secret…. msg me for deets
exes – there will be a couple of these, gender does not matter. i’d like to find one that she was dating when she went into treatment and maybe hasn’t seen/spoken to them since they’ve been back, first love, high school sweetheart?? omg possibilities are endless
flirtationship – self explanatory, gender doesn’t matter she’s pan
any other ideas literally lmk!! thanks for reading ♥
our love was never meant to last
For Day One of Klaroline AU Week 2019: Mythological Creatures.
Happy KC AU Week! It was always my favorite part of the Klaroline fandom, and I’m so glad that Luiza (@klaroline-events and @itsnotacrimetoloveyou) brought it back! Lu, ily!
Prompt was partially suggested by @dottie-wan-kenobi who told me to write mermaids and partially by a short story I wrote in high school that I never completed.
Also, can I mention, I hate the new tumblr text formatting.
summary: When Hope Mikaelson begs her grandfather Klaus for a story, he tells her off a love long-lost. Seventy years ago, Klaus Mikaelson, then a RAF pilot, tumbled into the sea when his plane was shot down and was rescued by a beautiful girl with sunshine hair, a wolfish smile, and a silver tail. Their story was tragic and never meant to last.
***
One of Hope’s earliest memories begins like this:
It is a late summer afternoon in Albany, New York. The house is empty; Hope’s parents and grandmother are away running errands. The air is muggy and thick enough to choke on; Hope’s grandfather sits in his rickety old rocking chair on the porch to take refuge from the scorching rays of the sun. Hope perches at the edge of the porch, only a small distance away, kicking her slender feet out in no discernable rhythm. She stares out into the empty street in boredom, finding no fellow children to run out and play with.
It's too hot; everyone is avoiding the heat, choosing to remain indoors with the artificial chill of their air conditioners and fans.
Her grandfather leans back in the chair, and it creaks as he shifts his weight. He too cannot stave his impatience with the spy thriller he had been reading, so he sets it aside, down on the floor.
“Would you like to hear a story, Hope?”
His voice, a low baritone tinged with an eclectic mix between a Southern and British accent, is a startling relief from the sleepy silence of the neighborhood, and Hope perks up, turning to face him.
“Yes! That would be awesome! I am so bored.” She stretches out the syllables of her words in child-like exaggeration, pouting up at her grandfather.
“There are several that I can think of…” he begins, but Hope interrupts.
“No, grandad!” she cries. “You’ve already told me all of your stories.” Hope blinks eyes heavy with exhaustion up at him. “Tell me a new one.”
“A new story?” her grandfather mutters, stormy eyes going distant as he thinks back. Having decided on one, he turns his attention back to his granddaughter and smiles gently. “I think there is one story from your old grandad that you have never heard.”
***
I know that you have learned somewhat about the Second World War at school. It was a terrible war; there were so many innocent deaths, so much violence. But, I was never involved directly in the fighting.
No, I was a pilot. I flew airplanes for the British Royal Air Force. We often went on dangerous missions; it wasn’t always a guarantee that we would come back home. And, what we were doing, dropping bombs to destroy German U-boats, it wasn’t a terribly-good thing to do. But we were saving lives.
On one such mission in…September of 1945, I think, I was flying over the ocean. The Atlantic Ocean, it is the ocean between the United States and Great Britain.
Around me, the sky was surrounded in inky darkness; it was nighttime. And it was raining, such stormy weather that hadn’t been seen all summer. Still, I was safe inside my airplane.
Suddenly…I saw a flash of fiery light streaking toward me; it hit my plane with such a loud boom that my ears still rang for moments after.
My plane had been hit by fire from an enemy pilot.
They had ruined my plane’s engine, and I no longer had control. The plane began to plummet down so swiftly that my head smacked against the ceiling, and I was knocked unconscious.
I woke up once, only briefly. I had somehow fallen out of the plane, and I was dropping towards the ocean like a stone. My side was aching; I could not feel it, but I was paralyzed with fear and shock. I thought I was going to die, and I passed out again.
Once more I woke up. I had just plunged underwater; it was freezing, my entire body ached, and the water kept dragging me further down.
I opened my mouth to breath, a stupid mistake. The water rushed into my mouth, filling up my lungs, stinging the way skinning a knee does but everywhere. I tried to swim, I reached out a hand to claw my way out of the water, but it was too heavy, my body was too heavy. I only sank faster.
The water burned like hot lava in my stomach after I was forced to swallow some.
Everything began to become fuzzy at the edges, and I couldn’t tell upside from down. Still, I fought to keep my eyes open, but it was a losing battle.
And, then, imagine this.
Just as all I could see became darkness, there was a flash of silver, almost like light. It was shimmery, metallic. And I tried to reach for it.
But my body was still not under my control.
I thought I saw a face, a human face, but that was not possible. No one could be underwater with me.
I could not ponder this, because unconsciousness came quickly.
***
When I came to, I saw the brightest sky I had ever seen. Brilliant and clear, not a cloud to be seen. And below me? The softest, purest sand ever felt against the exposed skin of my arms.
I shifted against the sand, pain licking like flames down my sides. I was in the most agony that I had ever felt. Something hot was boiling up in my throat, and I gagged, unsuccessful in keeping it down. I turned my head and vomited the remains of my last meal onto the sand; I kept my eyes away from the mess. My stomach roiled again as I dry-heaved.
Something hovered into my view.
A face. The face I had caught a brief glimpse of underwater.
It was a woman-no, it was a girl.
She was beautiful, yes, but did not surpass my childhood sweetheart Camille in beauty. Her skin was unblemished and fair like the sand I lay against, and her hair, hanging loose further than I could see, was a sunshine yellow, though it gleamed even more golden when it caught the light. But, more remarkable, was the keen intelligence that shone in the depths of her cerulean eyes, muddled against the stare of a predator.
I craned my head to allow my gaze to travel further than her delicate collarbones and a slash of nearly sheer fabric that covered her entire upper body; I glanced down and then immediately jerked my head back in bewilderment. I snuck another painful look to make sure that my tired eyes and brain were not playing tricks on my mind.
This girl had a tail.
At her waist, where Camille would wear her skirt, was a majestic tail, silver in color. It was a beauty, iridescent, wide at the waist but narrow where the flipper protruded. It flexed, shimmering with lustrous color under the rays of the luminous sun.
My brain could not compensate for both the agony and the impossibility of a girl with the tail of a fish.
I screamed, the sound ripping itself from my throat. It was the sound of a wild man, a man losing his soul; it was a sound that I believed myself incapable of making until that moment. I screamed myself hoarse, until my throat rubbed raw against itself as I attempted to make noise, but the girl with a tail made no indication to move.
Finally, when all the noise and all the fight was drained out of me, sucked away and replaced by an exhaustion so heavy I felt it in my bones, the girl lunged into my view. I could not flinch away; my limbs dragged against each other as I attempted to move.
She opened her lips, a slash of bright color against the white sand, and I braced my body, stiffening away the best I could.
But she spoke not.
No, she sang.
And her song, oh her song, light, airy, melodious, unlike anything I had ever heard. It was distant at first, the hushed background noise of a radio while the channel is being adjusted. It was still one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.
Then I began to listen.
It was harmonious, it was precise, her song was in tune with the rhythmic beating of my heart.
A magical spell was woven in her music, in her song, in her voice. Her voice wove threads in my mind, dulled it until I could no longer refuse to obey, fogged the rest of my brain until the slapping of ocean waves no longer registered. The color of my vision faded, her face disappearing, only her voice left as my guiding focus.
Her voice paralyzed my body. I could not flinch, I could not tremble, I could not resist.
So, I obeyed her song.
And my mind slept.
***
For a second time, my mind stirred, and my eyes fluttered open. The aching in my bones was now a lingering memory, my pain receptors somehow dulled so my body was temporarily relaxed from the pain. There was faint light filtering from above, though my eyes were staring straight ahead at the slate cavernous ceiling of a cave. My body rested on a surface more solid than the sand had been, but my fingers twitched unconsciously and stroked against the slippery silk of cloth.
I shifted my body; there was heat flaring over my body suddenly, so thick it weighed heavy in my chest and lungs. I coughed, a million bees buzzed in my mouth and throat.
Immediately, there was relief in the form of a cool, soaked rag draped against the delicate skin of my forehead. The difference in temperature was as distinct as the difference between black and white. Water trickled down the sides of my temples, and I sighed audibly.
The rag was a heavenly gift to me in my poor state.
I turned my face towards my savior as a blind man would to the sun, but, immediately, I recoiled and tried to shove myself further away.
The girl had placed the rag on my forehead and was now lifting it. I traced the paths of her slender hands with my eyes and watched as she dipped the rag into a small pot likely filled with water, allowing the cloth to become weighty. Then, in rapid, harsh movements, she retrieved the rag, squeezed the liquid from it thoroughly, and returned it to its position on my forehead.
Her hand brushed against the prickling skin on my forehead; her skin was smooth and soft against the dampness of my temple.
I stiffened, heart roaring to life, but there was no escape. Despite the lack of pain in my body, I was pinned between her and the cavern wall.
“Get away from me,” I demanded weakly, bursting into a fit of violent coughing that left me doubled over. Even speaking strained my voice after my bout of screaming…days ago? Hours ago? Time seemed to have passed so sluggishly since I fell from my plane that I could no longer tell.
She ignored me.
“Humans.” She clicked her tongue with strange indifference. Her voice was cool, evenly-pitched, almost throaty. It struck me as odd; after hearing her song, I had expected her speaking voice to also be honeyed and lilting. “So clumsy and fragile.”
Singing…
“What did you do to me?” I blurted in outrage and immediately regretted it when my throat ached.
“Hmm?” The girl swept the rag from my forehead, and, though the heat was swiftly returning, I shivered. “What did I do?”
“You forced me to sleep!” I protested.
“Oh, yes. That,” she replied tonelessly, as though it had suddenly occurred to her. “I sung to you.”
“You sung to me?” I managed to prop my head up at a slight angle; my eyes unconsciously travelled back to her waist.
I would have blushed at the shamelessness of my gaze, several years in the air force had not trained away the innocence and decency ingrained in me by my family and culture, but my eyes were then popping out of my head at her current lack of tail.
“You have legs!” I gasped audibly. “Where did your legs go?”
She rolled her cerulean eyes, a gesture usually found uncouth on most ladies but that strangely suited her. Once again, she ignored my question. “You have several broken ribs and deep surface wounds. None are critical, but some may scar and mar your pretty face.”
I was unsure if she meant that as a compliment.
The girl continued, “I have treated your wounds with a paste made of lavender and wintergreen; both are natural anesthetics. Your ribs I have numbed with a gel of clove oils. They must heal internally, and you must keep them tightly wrapped.”
“Why are you doing this?” I must have mumbled, and the girl smiled, a wolf smile not fit for her fair features.
“I don’t like my victims untainted.”
The air was snuffed from my lungs, and the blood must have drained from my face, leaving my countenance considerably paler, because the wolf girl’s wolf smile grew wider.
“Relax,” she purred, voice silky and deceptive. “I won’t harm you. I don’t like getting my hands dirty. I only sing humans to death; that’s where the fun is, the deception and the chase and the hunt. I’m a predator.”
Chills ran down my spine, warning bells echoing in my ears. “Dangerous girl, what kind of creature are you?” I managed to gasp through my strangled throat.
“Silly human boy.” Wolf girls’ laughs were not meant to sound like tinkling silver bells. “I am a monster. I lure boys like you in and watch you crash to your own death into rocks. I am a siren like in those myths humans are so proud of. I change form at will.” The tense silence that stretched between her next words brought tentative hope to my heart. “I will heal you, and then you will leave.”
I had no time to flinch when she yanked the threadbare fabric of my shirt up and ripped wraps of fabric away from the skin that covered my ribs. If the pain had not been dampened, I would have howled.
She would have likely sneered in satisfaction.
“Hold your shirt away from your skin,” the siren ordered, and I obeyed out of fear. “I must replace your bandages. I will return in a moment.”
I must have drifted off from the exertion of my body, because, when I focused my dazed eyes, there was a subtle gleaming between new cloth on my ribs, likely more numbing gel.
My stomach growled noisily.
Strange. My brain had not registered hunger.
The siren materialized at my side, clutching what appeared to be a hollow coconut shell. Something sloshed inside it as she shoved it none-to-gently toward me.
“What is that?” I mumbled. When she raised an eyebrow, I repeated my words with more volume.
“Food,” she replied crisply. “Careful when you raise yourself up.”
She lent no helping hand as I tenderly propped myself up, leaning my back against the hard rock behind me. I retrieved the shell from her hands, avoiding skin contact.
The liquid inside the coconut was thick and slightly murky, though the color was most likely due to the small herbs dotting its surface. I raised the lip of the shell to my mouth and tilted; the brew had a sharp, sour flavor that I did not shy away from. It reminded me of my mother Esther’s chicken stew, something I had not had in several years, or at least not since rationing began in England.
My hunger took over me, and I drained the shell. Some liquid dribbled over my lips as I swallowed; I wiped the excess away with the back of my hand as I set the shell on the cot besides me.
The siren watched me with clever eyes, smile finally gone.
Hunger momentarily quelled, my body not in any immediate trouble, I surveyed the cave in which we rested.
The space was small and tidy, furnished with a mishmash of objects like the cot I was laying on, a burgundy rug embroidered with ornate patterns, or the curtains of translucent cloth that fluttered as a light breeze brushed through the entrance of the cavern.
“Where am I?” I dared question.
“An island,” came her brief response.
“An island where?”
The siren’s eyes glimmered as jewels would. “That is not a concern of yours when you remain in this condition. You are to remain on this island, my island, under my care until you recover to near-perfect condition.”
“Do I have a say in this?”
“No.” Her refusal was perfunctory but decisive, and I realized that I did, in fact, not have a say in my condition.
“Sleep,” she instructed, and, though this time her words were more of a mere suggestion, I still heeded them.
For several days, we existed like that. I slept on the cot, feeling as if my legs were deteriorating from their lack of movement. The siren would drift into the cavern occasionally to change my bandages or apply more ointment or forcibly hand me a shell of the same brew. She would always disappear to the water at nightfall, always wearing dresses of the same nearly-sheer fabric. My pain remained numbed for most of the passing time, leaving me to assume that the siren slipped her painkilling substance in my meals.
We shared vague, undisturbed conversation. She never proved intimidating after the day I first awoke, though she behaved as if I remained uninteresting.
One of our exchanges went like this:
“Have you no name I may call you?” I asked her as she scraped a paste of herbs for my next ointment. It had been less than a week after I nearly drowned, and I lounged the best I could against the solid surface of the cot.
“What may I call you?” she shot back rapidly, clever hands at swift work.
I detected no venom in her taunts, a usual occurrence of late; it seems that she was beginning to warm up to me. “Klaus,” I told her.
“Klaus.” She tested my name several times, weighing it on her tongue with curiosity. “What is the significance of your name?” Her voice had taken a near childlike quality.
“It is a diminutive of Niklaus, which means victory of the people in a certain language.”
“Victory?” The siren’s full lips curled into a soft expression, lacking the sharpness of her wolf smile. “What war are you fighting?”
Her question struck a chord with me, and I laughed hollowly. “No war that I can win.”
She eyed me intuitively before nodding silently, her hair bobbing along with the movement of her head. “You may call me whatever you please. I have no name and have grown accustomed to the titles others award me.”
It took mere seconds until inspiration struck me. “May I call you Caroline?” I briefly knew a Caroline once, a daughter of distant family acquaintances, and something about the sharp stare of the curious siren reminds me of her.
The siren nodded her assent, and Caroline she became.
***
“Why do your fellow humans war in the sky and in the sea?” she questioned only a few days later.
I gaped at her in astonishment. This was one inquiry I had never expected. “We’re fighting a war,” I finally managed to reply. “The last war like this that my country fought in was called the war to end all wars. It seems that this might be the war to end all wars.”
“What is the conflict?”
“Conflict?” I echoed with bewilderment.
“Why does your country fight?”
“We must crush the forces that threaten the will of the world as I know it,” I stated, a sentiment I had heard from many of my fellow pilots.
She glances at me and then away, as if one view into my eyes has exposed my meager secrets. “And why do you fight?”
“I fight, because my country chose me to,” I reply swiftly, but she had heard what I had left unsaid
“But you do not choose to,” Caroline guessed.
My silence served as confirmation.
Her eyes softened to the closest that I had seen as kindness in her expressions. “It was never my intent to force you to sleep against your will,” she confessed, “but it was a necessity for your body to heal.”
“I have never had my mind turned against my will until that instance,” I commented quietly. “I never intend for it to happen again.”
“Take this as my word. Or, rather as my vow.” Caroline had been kneeling on the rug besides my cot, but, now, she rose to look down upon me. “I will never sing to you again,” she promised sincerely.
After that day, the last vestiges of our stony animosity were washed away, and we treated each other as equals, dare I say friends.
***
Several days later, Caroline determined that my wounds had healed well-enough for her to allow me to venture outside.
First, however, she urged me to practice walking around the cave.
It was easier said than done.
Despite Caroline’s assistance in slipping off the cot, the moment I attempted to stand I wobbled so critically that I would have fallen had Caroline not been there to catch me.
“Steady,” she murmured, eyes shifting down to my trembling legs. “Take this step by step, and, soon, you will be able to stand.”
How odd had our acquaintanceship become that it never once occurred to me to doubt her words.
Steady step by steady step, I spent hours that day relearning how to walk, and not once did Caroline ever leave my side.
At the end, I was trembling and sweating, my legs aching hollowly as if I had run miles and exerted my body more tremendously than I had done, but I had managed to walk the length of the cavern several times.
“What did I say?” Caroline crowed as I moved to perch on the edge of the cot in exhaustion.
“Even a blind miner strikes gold once,” I replied stubbornly.
The next day, Caroline dragged me from my cot early in the morning.
“What?” I groaned, rubbing my eyes blearily. My last meal had been last night, and her pain-numbing concoction’s effects were wearing off; I could feel the aching beginning, deep in my bones. If I still sustained true pain from my injuries, even after two weeks, it would hit sooner or later. “I think I’ll need more of your painkilling substance soon.”
“I will give it to you soon,” she promised sincerely, “but hurry!” Caroline bundled me towards the entrance of the cave while I tottered for balance. Her push was gentle but steady, and, slowly, I limped towards the lip of the cave, further than I had ever been.
I broke through the shadow of the cave, bare feet brushing against the velvety but grainy sand, my boats having left unworn in the cave for weeks, and gasped, heart nearly thudding out of my chest as I surveyed the landscape that unfolded below me.
The sun had just risen, casting yellow light that washed over the dark sea and formed a trail of white where the light hit the water. Around me, the dusky purple of the night sky was lightening for day, revealing a verdant forest of green to my right. The snow-like beach lay spread to my left, speckled with grey and brown boulders.
“Of all the sights in the world,” I breathed quietly, “this is one I am glad that never went unseen.”
“I wouldn’t know,” Caroline admitted. “Come.” She motioned with a single hand as she began to herd me down a gentle slope that led to the beach.
“You wouldn’t know?” I questioned curiously.
She shook my question off and took off running towards the long stretch of beach. “Chase me,” she demanded in a joyful cry.
I laughed loudly for the first time in weeks, and the sound echoed in the silence around me. I followed Caroline, trailing behind in a quick walk, not trusting my legs enough to run.
In front of me, Caroline reached the water and came to an abrupt halt. She waited a few moments for me to catch up, glancing back at me with invitation in the endless oceans that were her eyes. As I grew closer, she began to chuckle, a melody almost as stunning as her song.
She took a running start, water flying up behind her as she dashed forward, before diving forward into the water.
As her head became submerged in the water, the air surrounding her legs began to blur slightly, as if becoming covered with a smoke screen.
I will never be able to describe exactly how it happened, but it was almost magical, the way her legs metamorphized into her shimmering tail.
I had reached the edge of the water and hesitated slightly.
The memory began to loop itself in my head: how the water had reached into every crevice of my lungs, how it had filled my nostrils until I could no longer breath, how I had begun to choke, how the water weighed me down, dragging me further into its depths.
A cool spray of water slapped me in the face, and I gasped, breaking free from that nightmare’s hold, head turning to gaze at Caroline.
She had splashed me with the fin of her tail, and she did it again, sending a torrent of water splashing into my face.
I only blinked slowly as my hair became plastered to my head.
“Well,” she called eagerly, “are you coming in or not?” When I failed to respond after a brief pause, her face took on an expression of concern. “Oh. It did not occur to me that you may have retained a fear of the water after your near death.”
“No,” I said frantically, attempting to soothe her worries. “That is not what it is.”
She shook her head in refusal. “I am centuries old, Klaus. I am not oblivious. It should have occurred to me, I apologize.”
“No…really…” I sighed. “It is not right for me to be afraid.”
Caroline stared at me critically. “Why is it not right?” she asked calculatingly.
“Men in my society,” I began softly. “We are not supposed to have such ordinary weaknesses.”
Snorting in disbelief, she swam up to where the shallowness of the water began, and, when she edged out of the water, she walked on her feet, skin still covered by the cloth of her dress, now soaked and floating above the water.
I gaped briefly, amazed by her transformation.
She strode up to me, nearing closer until we were nose to nose. “That is complete and utter bullshit,” she snapped. “I have swum the waters of this world for far longer than you could imagine, and, of every man and women who have sailed these seas, for there have been many women, and who I have lured with my song, all were susceptible to ordinary weaknesses or fears. It is only natural. Every person has fears; one must simply be courageous enough to brave them.” Caroline seated herself on the sand and reached up a hand. “Come.”
I gently eased myself into the sand beside her. “You have lived long, haven’t you?”
“I have.”
“Yet you have never seen the world,” I stated in confusion.
“I cannot,” Caroline explained. “It is not in my nature. I am not meant to walk among the humans; I am meant to be their death and destruction. I was created from sea foam to be such.”
“You walk alongside me; you have cared for me.”
She laughed in melancholy. “That is different. I will never be able to live amongst the humans; there is no point in pretending otherwise.”
“If I could,” I breathed. “I would take you anywhere in the world. You deserve to see it as such.”
“That is the kindest offer anyone has ever made me.” Her smile could have launched a thousand ships; she would have been Helen of Troy, her beauty amplified by her happiness.
I do not know how we shifted until our sides were pressed together; I could feel the heat of her skin brushing against mine through the thin fabric of her dress and my trousers.
She turned her face towards mine, and I must have done the same for our lips were touching.
Her lips were soft as they brushed against mine, a whisper of butterfly wings.
Our kiss was sweet and soulful, but there was a dissonant cacophony of danger bells clanging themselves in my head.
I reached a tender hand to cup her face, stroking my thumb over her cheekbone, before slowly drawing my head back.
“I cannot,” I apologized in a hushed voice. “In other circumstances, I would be able to love you, but I cannot now. My heart already belongs to another.”
Her eyes were understanding. “Who?”
“I can only show you.”
So, my heart writhing in emotional pain, I led her back to the cave and to the heap where my bomber jacket and boots lay. From that inner pocket, I withdrew my compass. Amazingly, it remained intact, despite all the trauma it had gone through; the lid was only the slightest bit dented. I flipped it open to reveal the photograph that lay embedded within.
“This is Camille,” I stated softly. “We met as children.”
The photograph was from that last occasion we saw each other before my training, before she had gone off to work as a nurse in the war hospitals; we had gone dancing. Though the print was black and white, my mind filled in the brassy yellow of her hair - not too dissimilar to Caroline’s, the flecks of green and grey in her eyes, the rosy red of her cheeks. She remained burned in my memory: her sparkling eyes, her angular chin, the narrows of her delicate hands, the melody of her laugh.
“Do you love her?” Caroline’s eyes were glossy with unshed tears, but there was a ghost of a smile on her lips.
“Very much.” A lovestruck expression overtook my face. “She is kind but witty; her words can be barbs on her tongue, but she never wields them to hurt, only to sooth.”
“She sounds lovely.”
“She is.” I nodded eagerly.
Caroline laughed without venom. “Love is the one human emotion I never understood,” she said straightforwardly. “I believe I never will.”
I could not respond to that.
***
For days after, conversation between us remained stilted and awkward until, one day, Caroline sat me down and forced me to talk about Camille.
“I’m a sucker for love stories,” she demanded.
I could only oblige.
From then, we laughed and talked the way we had before.
A day almost four weeks later, Caroline declared that my injuries had healed almost fully.
“Now what?” I inquired as I perched on the edge of my cot.
“I do not know.” She shrugged, hands fiddling with the cloth of her dress. “Let us eat while we ponder your next opportunities”
After another meal of broth, we traveled out the beach. My fear of the water had dulled slightly, enough that I did not panic when we waded out into the water as we were currently doing.
“It never seemed that you wished to fight in your human war,” Caroline told me.
“That is true,” I remarked. “I was drafted; I had no choice.”
“Do you not need to return?” she asked.
“I do not know,” I replied truthfully.
The war had not occurred to me in all my weeks with Caroline; it was a thing of the outside world, distant and nearly forgotten.
“I do not need to,” I mused. “I could stay here with you.”
Her eyes flashed. “No, you would not survive here. Humans have short lives, and yours would end soon enough. I would be lonely again. Besides, you have family and someone who loves you.”
“You can come with me!” I cried passionately.
She barked a bitter laugh. “I have already told you, Klaus. I cannot be a human; I cannot live amongst them.”
“Why not?” I demanded.
Her wolf smile had returned. “You are so naïve,” Caroline hissed. “I bring death with my song. I would destroy humanity. It is not a choice; it is a compulsion. I stayed away from humans for a reason, watching from a distance. You showed me the best of humanity, but even my song was too much for you. My song will ruin you; we will never be able to live together in harmony anywhere.”
There was a flood of agony to my heart and head. “I have never met a soul like you,” I said, trying to appeal to her. “We could figure it out together.”
Her angry demeanor cracked as her eyes flooded with tears. “It will not work,” she stated simply, turning her face away.
“How do you know?” I protested.
“You will never understand.” She rose elegantly, like a queen. “Come with me.”
I did not follow. “Why?” I asked stubbornly, holding my ground, bare toes digging into the sand.
“Please.” Her airy voice cracked with emotion I could not understand.
At the pleading in her voice, I loosened my body and took a step towards her. “Fine.”
Briefly, there was brightness in her pained smile. She began to walk towards the cave, and I trailed behind her, my bewilderment growing as we entered the cave. Caroline grabbed my bomber jacket and stuffed it into my arms. “Put those on,” she ordered, gesturing to my boots. “You’ll need them where we’re going.”
I obeyed, asking as I balanced to pull my boots on, “Where are we going?”
Caroline held out a hand to me. “Wait.” The moment I had tied the laces of my boots and slid my jacket on, she led me out of the cave.
We traveled along the cave until the path became steeper and steeper, until I was gasping for breath, though Caroline remained unaffected, until the cave became a mound of rock surrounded by dirt. We were crossing to a side of the island I had never seen before, following the line of trees from the forest but never venturing inside. Finally, roughly ten minutes later, we arrived at a small cove with a direct view to the sea. I stopped at the entrance while Caroline ventured to a large rocky overhang.
From its shadow, she heaved out, with incredible strength, a vast wooden platform, made of logs tied tightly together, with a narrow paddle attached.
It was a raft.
“Sirens have always had an innate sense of the sea. For example, I know that, if you paddle out for a few hours and drift in the same direction for some more, you will find yourself in the path of a ship,” she told me nonchalantly. “It could be a U-boat, but it is more likely to be one of your country’s boats.”
“I do not understand,” I stuttered.
On the contrary, however, a small seed of comprehension began to sprout in my mind.
“You do not need to.”
Then, she opened her mouth again, lips stretched wide, and I understood.
Caroline began to sing.
It was a terrible song, music of hopelessness and frustration and sorrow and loss. Her voice, as airy and beautiful as it was, was also rough and full of turmoil, a voice of grated rocks and sharp edges. One listen would open up your heart, one listen would cut a wound, one listen would cause bleeding.
I tried to steel myself against her voice; I stilled my heart and mind, left them as hardened as possible.
It was futile.
Her song drove itself into my mind, wrapped itself around my heart. Her warbling ordered my feet to move against my will, to stride toward the raft and toward her in clumsy steps.
My body couldn’t resist as it stumbled toward her.
I came to stand in front of her.
“Why, why are you doing this?” I cried emotionally. “Let me stay here with you.”
At that moment, all thought of the war, of my home, of my Camille were driven from my mind; my only focus was Caroline.
She turned her head to face me, still singing. Her eyes were wide, the endless water in the endless oceans of her eyes finally spilling over and down her quivering cheeks as she took miniscule gasping breaths between notes. Her lips met and parted as she articulated her music.
My body moved itself to the raft and tugged it further to the ocean tide that teased the shore.
Of my own accord, I called out to her, but my helpless pleading fell on deaf ears.
I was seated on the raft, able to sprawl my full body across it and still reach the oar.
Caroline continued to sing.
“Please…” was all I could manage.
She gave me a bitter, sea salt smile as one of my hands lifted the oar.
No amount of resistance could tear my palms from the oar as my arms began to paddle, pulling the raft into the hungry tide. The song never lifted from my mind, though my heart remained free to beat in relentless agony.
As the raft began to drift into the ocean, my head was forced to turn to face the water, until I could no longer see Caroline.
Only her voice continued, tainting itself into my ears.
Her song changed suddenly, no longer heavy or dark but now light and freeing. There was loss, yes, but it was overcome by the coolness of sacrifice, by the sweetness of innate selflessness.
The siren’s song remained in my ears all the way to sea…
tim bloom and sasha coates were high school sweethearts that met in philadelphia, many moons ago. they got married young when tim enlisted in the army, but it wasn’t until their late 20s that they started having kids only to wind up with four daughters.
tim, who’s own father and grandfather had also been high ranking officers in the army, was a no nonsense kind of guy. ran a strict household. probably would have preferred sons to daughters and likely never forgave sasha for never giving him any - as if that was something she could control. the kind of dad to pat you on the back and tell you to suck it up when you were crying. only uttered the words i love you a handful of times ever, in his life. a real great dad, essentially.
their mother was everything their father wasn’t. warm, compassionate, loving. her husbands utter opposite in every sense of the word. she was a school teacher, following her husband across the country and world from military base to base, taking care of their 4 kids along the way with only ever a smile.
so when sasha died ten years ago everyones world seemed to get a little bleaker. their father didnt handle it well. he did, however, take this as a reason to move the girls back to philadeliphia, mostly so sasha’s mom, their grandmother, could take over the parenting role he’d never been able to fulfill. he did a couple more tours in iraq before retiring as a sergeant and getting a job at a local military academy.
there was always some sort of expectation that the girls would follow after their father, which i imagine at least one of them did - maybe a few others. leven did not and would keel over and die before she succumbed to that. she’s the obvious black sheep of the family, but that doesn’t mean all of the sisters need to be replicas of their father as i imagine none of them are really as harsh as him.
im gonna stop here before this gets to be 83 paragraphs long ill yell at u all on discord because im emo !! about this sisterhood plz. im thinking 4 sisters but lowkey would be cool stretching it to 5 because big sister fams are my jam. i also imagined them all as super blonde but i’d be cool with a lone brunette who super takes after their dads looks or something. idk, leven is the youngest and the rest of the ages are open as long as they dont overlap. thx !!!!
Chapter 1
Where I grew up and the circumstances that lead to my birth are, on paper as American as apple pie. The sleepy small town I called home for the first twenty years of my life could almost be ripped from the canvas of a Norman Rockwell painting. Chatham, New York, situated roughly 125 miles north of Manhattan is the definition of small-town America. Chatham has a whopping single stoplight, a handful of banks and churches, a school district with teachers that can have easily educated two or three generations in the same family before their retirement and a population just shy of 1,500. My parents were high school sweethearts, as is pretty common in our little corner of the world
Once, I asked my dad how he first approached my mom who was fifteen to his eighteen at the time. He told me the story of the day he offered her a ride home from school. It’s a small town so everyone kind of knew everyone else, plus their families were acquainted. Before my grandfathers were my grandfathers they were drinking buddies. All that being said, my dad offering my mom a ride home wasn’t weird. I’m told she accepted his offer but sat basically as far away from him as you can get in the passenger side of a car. According to my dad’s memory mom basically sat against the passenger side door – and didn’t like him initially. His persistence must’ve paid off, or irritated my mom enough to go out with him – however this was the eighties in small town America and my mom told me once that her friends suggested she break up with my dad, because he’s half black and my mom is white. Luckily, she didn’t listen.
I’ve seen countless mementos of the early years of my parent’s relationship – pictures with messages scrawled on the back that were kept in wallets, a sketchbook of my dad’s with “JR ’s Tammy” written on the front. All of which paint an almost idyllic picture of their relationship with each other before marriage and kids. Then my dad told me the story of their first Christmas together – they were having an argument and as my dad was walking up the stairs in their apartment, my mom hurled a ceramic Christmas tree shaped decoration at my dad’s head. It hit the wall behind him and broke clean in half. That was over thirty years ago and it still gets put out at Christmas time, still broken.
Despite her throwing things at his head my dad eventually asked my mom to marry him. I’ve heard her engagement ring cost him a mere $200. At this point, my parents had been together between five and six years. On July 1st 1989 they married in a church in my hometown in front of friends and family. I’m not actually sure how all their guests fit inside the church assuming everyone went to the ceremony; my dad has nine siblings and countless extended family. There’s a video of their wedding reception, and in my family’s typical fashion it looked like quite the party.
In the summer of 1992, my parents welcomed my best friend – my older brother. Based on pictures I’ve seen my brother seemed to be an easy child. Which is good, they would need that prior to me. There are lots of pictures in strawberry fields. at SeaWorld and involving orange trees, presumably from vacations to my maternal grandparents’ winter house in Florida. When my brother was a toddler my mom claims that he would point at the chandelier in the dining room of their apartment and say “Samantha” over and over. Regardless of the validity of that story, the name must’ve stuck.
I was born in October of 1995. When I picture the day of my birth I picture something worthy of a Grey’s Anatomy episode. It probably wasn’t that dramatic but in my imagination it’s a fitting scenario. I’ve seen pictures of my mother a few months prior to my birth and if I didn’t know that fetus me was present I wouldn’t even assume my mom was pregnant. She was as flat as a washboard, no baby bump at all. And barely any body fat in sight. I’ve never asked how exactly my mom knew something was wrong or that she was in labor. According to my dad’s memory he wasn’t home when this situation began; he was out at a fire. My dad was a new firefighter around the time of my birth and had just finished tending to a fire at a local business with his company; he and the rest of his company were enjoying a meal bought by the owners of the business they’d just extinguished the fire from. One of his fellow firefighters took the phone call and relayed the message that my mom was in the hospital about to have me and my dad should get there as fast as possible. My hometown is about an hour from the hospital I was born in – from what I’ve heard dad very nearly missed my birth.
Mom was at twenty-four weeks gestation, for those not great at math that’s roughly six months. The doctors had discovered the placenta, which is supposed to provide oxygen and nutrients to a fetus was detached. Something that only happens in one out of one thousand pregnancies. This meant that I was suffocating and starving from inside the womb and had to be delivered, at that moment which would make me roughly three months premature. On October 14th 1995 at approximately 9pm I was born. My name is Samantha, and I weighed two pounds at birth I was so small I could fit in the palm of a hand.
Directly following my birth doctors weren’t sure I would actually survive since it was very rare at the time for baby’s born at twenty-four weeks to survive. However, being a fighter, I made it through.
Since I was severely premature I had to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, also known as the NICU for a few months. I did make it home in time for my first Christmas though. There are pictures of me as an infant beside a teddy bear and the teddy bear is significantly bigger than I was. My clothes were either doll clothes or handmade by my paternal grandmother.
As a direct result of my lack of oxygen at birth I was slightly developmentally delayed. This was observed by my parents when I didn’t meet milestones like sitting up, or rolling over. I have an older brother so my parent’s sort of knew what to expect from an infant. That’s why when I wasn’t meeting milestones it warranted a trip to the doctor. Although I’m not exactly sure what kind of testing is involved I do know that eventually doctors were able to diagnose me with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy also known as CP is a neurological disability caused by trauma to the brain, in my case lack of oxygen at the time of my birth. In my circumstance, as every case of CP is unique much like a snowflake, my affected areas are the parts of my brain that deal with movement. This means, I can’t walk
