thoughts on Akihiko Yoshida? hes done several greatest game of all time contenders but I still don't know how 2 feel about him tbh

I would rank him highly, although I do think his best work belongs to a bygone era. I've always had a lot of affection for Yoshida as the Square-affiliated artist most likely to describe form with profuse hatching. The original Tactics Ogre cover is one of my favorite pieces of game art:

I think he produced his most compelling work around this period, in collaboration with Hiroshi Minagawa, and more generally prior to the onset of HD development. I don't know how deeply involved he was with the process (Minagawa is credited as supervisor in both cases), but between Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII, his designs have been treated to the most compelling applications of texture mapping in the medium.

I also love the lush storybook style he adopted for Four Heroes of Light, and I wish that quality had carried more cleanly into Bravely Default.

His contributions to FFXIV are obviously accomplished but they don't really stand out in my mind due to their proximity to so many other artists on that project working in a style that roughly approximates his own. I think that's something that has muddled my impression of his work over the past decade, the glut of designers seemingly trained in his style, or the new prominence of those who simply came up in the industry working in a comparable idiom, usually in the Ivalice games. The deliberately abstracted faces contrasted with baroque or luxuriously rendered dress, the almost exclusive use of earth tones etc. It's evident everywhere from certain of Kazuya Takahashi's key art in FFXVI to Naoki Ikushima's entire corpus of Yoshida-lite emulations, even Hideo Minaba's work on Granblue Fantasy.

At one point this was a perfect triangular complement to the sectors defined by Amano and Nomura, but as we recede further and further from any remaining stylistic imprint of the former and all the appealing extravagance is bled from the latter, a sort of repetitious sameness sets in. It's no fault of Yoshida's, and I think his own work still consistently outshines his "imitators", but it probably accounts for my cooler feelings of late.

As an aside, the guy has definitely indulged his predilections to a greater degree as time goes on. He's settled on an anatomical template for his female characters that I find vaguely disquieting, as evinced in this Tomb Raider illustration. That one has especially chitinous proportions, but most of it is basically just, like... hippy zettai ryoiki shit. A fetish so mild that it's one step removed from being really 'into' big titties. Guys with active accounts across multiple booru image boards will be cranking their shit to 2B for long and silent aeons, when even the memory of man is only a shadow over the wine-dark sea.

I would still like another game where he's allowed a fuller reign over design responsibilities. Like Nomura, he's reached a position of seniority that precludes him from designing anything beyond a few core characters and some key art, leaving the heft of the work to younger artists or middle-talents like Roberto Ferrari. Hopefully he'll be on tap for something other than Nier Automota phone games or FFXIV package illustrations or whatever the fuck Little Noah: Scion of Paradise is supposed to be. Damn, videogames are rough! This shit is not cooking!

I actually agree with you analysis with Aeon, because there is one thing that’s been bugging me this whole time about their “relationship”.

Leon states in Vendetta that he is tired of all the fighting, so much to the point to where he starts drinking. But what bothers me the most is that Ada in her shitty storyline is stealing samples to later trade as per orders of Wesker.

For me, it almost undermines Leon’s goal in the sense that the one thing he wants to end is being continued by the woman he is so in love with. Because of his love with her, he’s willing to turn a blind eye to her actions all because he loves her???

Leon’s character is being questioned. Which doesn’t make sense cause his whole thing is to save people but when the girl he loves is continuing the cycle that he wants to end, he just doesn’t care??? Like Leon was top of his class in the police academy, labeled as smart. But just because he sees a pretty girl his intelligence kind of just gets thrown out the window.

I like both characters, but i feel like their little cat and mouse game destroys both characters completely.

Anyway, sorry to ramble, keep up the analysis. i’m lovin’ it!

So, this has actually been my biggest source of frustration as a critic/analyst. Back when RE6 first came out, I was still heavy in the dwrp scene, and I played through the game with my buddy Seiko (who RPed the Chris to my Leon, at the time) and I just remember both of us at varying points being like "what the fuck is he doing??" "why is he so fucking stupid?? it's like he took all of Chris's stupid pills and he's like 'no it's my turn to give myself brain damage you already had your fun. B('"

And when we first beat Leon's campaign I just dropped my controller and leaned back and said, "Well. I guess Leon just became unplayable. So much for that shit. There goes five years of RP down the fuckin toilet. Thanks for nothing, Capcom." And Seiko had to be like "No, wait, hold on. We can figure this out." And eventually she was the one who finally realized and said: "It felt like his whole campaign was a cry for help."

And I have been trying to make that work ever since -- because it is the only way to make his character make sense, after a certain point.

It actually took me the better part of two years to fully form and crystallize my analysis of "Leon projects most of his trauma onto Ada because she's familiar and convenient -- and also it's a bit of sunk cost fallacy because he wasted so much of his life trying to chase her down, so he's forced to create and live in this delusion where he's convinced himself that she's working towards the greater good, even though he has absolutely no intellectual reason to think that considering the men she's worked for -- but he still has to force himself to buy into it because his entire sense of self has become wrapped up in all of this bullshit, and for him to confront and admit that he's been wrong about her all this time would literally cause his worldview to shatter and his mental health to completely unravel into nothing."

Because RE6, as it exists, is fucking nonsense. I already thought RE4 was pushing it, because I don't know how Leon could just... be okay with Ada working for Wesker. The only explanation is that he's become convinced that she's doing it for a good reason and is going to do the right thing -- even though he has absolutely no evidence for thinking that. A delusion is the only way for it to make sense, and RE6 kicks that into overdrive.

If you were to look at Leon and Ada's relationship and call it for what it was, the very uncomfortable truth that would shake out is that Leon himself is probably one of the greatest assets contributing to the perpetuation of bioterrorism research. He not just aids the US government in their cover-up stories and cleans up their messes for them, but he also actively aids Ada's efforts while she's working for guys like Albert goddamn Wesker.

If you look at it from that perspective, the grim reality is that the world might objectively be better off if Leon was to step down from his position, withdraw from the battlefield, or even off himself like he's always wanted to. He's not just a useful idiot like Chris was for the BSAA -- he is actively part of the problem.

And there's some part of Leon that knows that. But it goes against everything he claims to stand for.

And so, the only way to make sense of his actions is the explanation that his entire sense of self is wrapped up in this, and he's too deep in that hole to dig his way out now. He's aware, on some level, of the cognitive dissonance that's happening, and that's why he drinks.

So, it is very interesting to me that Ada has been MIA from the OG timeline since 6, and that Vendetta and Death Island made the move to have Chris and Jill officially move in as Leon's support system, when he didn't have one previously -- because, with the proper support system in place, it's possible that he can dig his way out of this hole.

But what will that mean for his relationship with Ada?

And so we look at the Remake series and see the foundation it's been laying...

And suddenly the horizon starts to look very, very dark for Aeon as a ship.

Since it's so many artists, I will send one song each and give a lil bit of info.

WILLOW (aka Willow Smith) Sapphic and an absolute rock star. Her music is generally really high quality punky rock with a poppy appeal.

Yoko Shimomura Probably the greatest video game composer of all time hands down no fucking contest. She's the genius behind the Kingdom Hearts sountrack, and has also contributed her expertise to Final Fantasy XV, the Mario and Luigi games, Mario RPG and Secrets of Mana. Her music can be grand and orchestral or quiet and sweet or energetic and wiggly, and her use of character motifs is something to behold.

Danny Baranowsky Another video game composer, Danny B is known best for his work on Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac and Crypt of the Necrodancer. His tracks have an unmatched energy, from BoI's quiet melodic horror to Necrodancer's get up and boogie beats. And of course, Meat Boy's wiggletastic MOVE YOUR MEAT, BOY tunes.

Shiro SAGISU An anime composer whose work on Evangelion and Bleach is beyond description. And like, I wouldn't recommend either of the SHOWS, but his music is absolutely fucking unreal. Especially his heavy use of Spanish guitar in the Arrancar Arc of Bleach alongside his usual heavy orchestral violins and pianos.

Masayoshi Takanaka A rock and city pop musician in the 80s and 90s, whose music I've heard described as "surf-dude J-rock" which, yeah, accurate. But some of his later stuff is also really experimental, getting a bit into grunge or orchestral rock.

Lena Raine A composer who's made some songs for recent Minecraft updates, but most people know her best for the soundtrack to Celeste. Which is utterly fantastic, it's BEAUTIFUL, managing to capture both the grand scale of the mountain climb and the heavily personal emotional stakes of our protagonist Madeline. Heavy use of gorgeous synth alongside piano and drums and guitar makes the whole soundtrack SOUND magical and otherworldly, which fits the game well.

Dios I discovered Dios through their guitarist, Ichika Nito, whose riffs on Youtube are unmatched. Magic hands, I swear. But Dios's vocalist, Tanaka, also has one of the most unique singing voices I've ever heard, he's got almost an Italian or Spanish rolling cadence to some of his phrases. The guy's also just got a fantastic voice, and Dios's songs are extremely solid poppy rock.

Akintoye A fantastic lyricist with an incredibly fast and articulate voice, a great sense of rhythm and flow, he's also just one of the most charismatic singers / rappers I've ever heard. His energy is absolutely addicting, and he's got such catchy layered melodies it's SO hard to not wiggle my fingers off my hands when listening.

Imogen Heap Most people recognize her from OOO WHATCHA SAY, OOO THAT YOU ONLY MEANT WELL, WELL OF COURSE YOU DID and like. Hide and Seek is an underrated song tbh but Speak for Yourself and Eclipse are just in general fantastic albums. It's impossible for me to describe her genre so I'm just gonna say...music that my very white hippie mom listens to all the time.

Des Rocs A modern day classic rock star. Not much else to say beyond that he's unreal talented.

After reading the strategic plan posted today, I want to offer some constructive criticism about retaining users from someone who's relatively new around here.

I joined Tumblr less than a year ago and agree that there’s steeper learning curve than other social media sites... but am a bit baffled by the disconnect. I want to be clear about what made this site hard for me as a new user and propose some easy fixes, because I think it’s pretty straightforward.

Suggestions in blue.

1. Confusion about Reblogging

The etiquette for reblogging was the most anxiety-inducing part of getting started. The language was a bit confusing, coming from non-tumblr blog culture. It also took me a while to understand that there was a difference between reblogging and reposting. There's (rightly) so much animosity for reposting, but to an outside perspective, they seem like the same term, which discourages engagement. Once I realized reblogging is the norm and creators ENJOY reblogs - that it's not theft and their name stays attached, linking directly to them - everything became simpler. There are always three names floating at the top of a post, but who the extra two are is something you pick up along the way without explanation. Understanding earlier would have been a game changer. A few more tutorials at launch would have made a huge difference: This is your blog. You REBLOG things here - that's normal. And here's the basic structure of a post. That would have made the transition a little smoother. Also, if you want to go above and beyond, adding a quick blurb about the difference between reblogging 👍 and reposting 👎 would probably ease tensions on a few fronts.

In short, Tumblr is ahead of most other mainstream SM sites when it comes to prioritizing creators > content and long-term, that's a strategic advantage. Keeping that culture in place requires a little more explanation on the front end though.

2. Confusion about Interacting

Another thing that baffled me in the beginning is that on other sites, hashtags are largely ignored except for organizational purposes, so I didn’t even notice people were leaving their commentary there at first. Now that I know, I actually LOVE that quirk of this site. It’s an introvert’s dream. Every other social media site is pushing other people's opinions in your face all the time. It’s exhausting. Here, I only see people’s comments if I CHOOSE to. If I want, I can interact with the content directly without being distracted by the noise around it. This is a huge draw, not only as a scroller, but also as a poster. I never (NEVER) post on any other site, because I know it’s going to bring it to the top in everyone’s feed and I don’t want to bother with everyone else’s opinions ABOUT my opinions - the endless cycle that inevitably leads to conflict in common spaces like this. Every post will be scrutinized and picked apart on other sites. Here on tumblr, I can put my thoughts on a post and no one sees it except the original poster and people who are *actively* curious about what I think. It’s a system that allows less pressure around posting and fosters more diversity of thought. It creates an environment that makes contributing easy. It’s very, VERY freeing and very, VERY rare in social media.

I wouldn’t mind seeing some rethinking about the way tags are handled if it supports the search engines, but now that I understand the way Tumblr uses them, I actually find this to be one of its greatest strengths and can’t imagine a way to preserve that quality while rearranging the tag system. As is, adding an ‘Anatomy of a Post’ tutorial like I mentioned would clear confusion about this and point new users toward the easiest way to interact with a post.

3. Confusion in Connecting

I did struggle to connect to content and communities at first, but it stemmed from a basic lack of understanding about how the site works. Once I found the pathways, other users pulled me in. Connection actually happens more easily here than on any other site I’ve EVER been on. Tumblr has incredibly useful tools for this; they just aren’t explained to beginners. The tag system is a great entry point. When I realized that I could search a tag and chronologically see EVERY SINGLE POST that had ever existed for it, it was magical. Now that I follow tags (and know the Your Tags tab exists… 🙃), new creators pop up in my feed all the time and get pulled into my communities seamlessly.

A quick tools tour at launch would solve this. And the ‘Anatomy of a Post’ tutorial I mentioned earlier would highlight the spot you can see other people who reblogged the same content. These connection points are easy to use, they just need to be more visible at the start.

That’s all, honestly.

Those are the only barriers that slowed me down in the beginning. They can ALL be solved with a few beginner-friendly tips on launch:

Intro to Dashes (Following, For You, & Your Tags + a brief personalization suggestion)

Intro to Search Features (basics + following tags)

Intro to Your Blog (basics + encouragement to personalize if the bots issue isn’t going to be resolved, because let’s be real… being mistaken for bots is probably why most people quit early these days😉)

Anatomy of a Post (basics + ways to interact)

Restricting the algorithms to the For You tab is really refreshing coming from other sites. It’s there if I want it, but , I can breathe here in a way I can’t on any other site. And honestly, the other reason I’m still around is that people are fucking weird here, which means I have freedom to be too. Any changes that don’t take those two strengths of this site into account risks losing the center and disintegrating the core. Foster a personalized experience. Prioritize avenues that let people interact at whatever level they’re comfortable. Support creator culture. Those are the things that make this better than the competition.

Oh, yeah, and if you're still reading... the organizational tag system needs some upgrades and these pornbots are killing us. Thanks, bye xD

And i felt bad about that. To me, what i thought was my blunder made my brother feel like being open was a possible minefield, which is something i also needed get real about since it’s so painfully evident that what happened there was NOT my fault and i somehow made it that way in my head. But that among other spots of shaming or shunning from family and poor friends made me wrongly assume how the world was and what i should be as a person. Woe was me 🤯. But i’m out of the woods now at least, or understand a facet about myself that i left unquestioned better, and i hope that’s a certain forecast of progress.

For reference everything prior was stuff that’s been drafted and noted throughout January. Not chronological or anything just complied into a sort of megapost. What follows is solely related to last night, february 3rd-4th

I’m feeling a lot of things. Im glad i don’t have work today, because i feel like going there in the mood i’m would only make me more upset considering how customers and management have been getting on my nerves lately. but that’s irrelevant, what i’m saying last night wasn’t the greatest. It wasn’t extreme, nobody is damaged or harmed, and everybody made it home so nothing active or ongoing concern. But as a whole just going through the time wasn’t fun to me. Firstly it was an opening party at a club an hour away that i knew next to nothing about the details surrounding other than the fact that the invite was from a afrobeats dj who’s a regionally known family friend. I was originally just hoping there would be good music but on the way after we picked up everyone who was riding in the car, i was told some family friends in the kenyan circle who were my age would be there (they were not, i was one of 3 people under 25 from what i could see if not, highly unfortunate for some people). We got there and the venue was filled with crowd that was notably older than me, but the music was alright. So i figured it would be tolerable at least. I spent my time at the bar drinking lemonades when this dude came up to me and asked me if he met me before and how long i’ve been in the country(since the majority of the club goers that day were immigrants among the last 20-40 years and shared the moving experience). i answered and then the talk ended shortly after when someone else he knew came to say hi and talk to him. I will spare the fluff on this accord but this story ends with me getting grope/humped on the dance floor by this dude when i got up to dance to a song i liked. it dawned on me later that he was definitely eyeing me after the initial interaction cause i did see him looking at me when i would walk around or when i was waiting in line at the bathroom but i just thought it was like the look of knowing more so than sizing me up to act since i didn’t clock that he was reading me as a girl. (i was standing in the wrong spot at this point which is likely what contributed to my fate since if i was in the right like that dude probably would’ve stepped off immediately) That ruined my mood a great deal and i really wanted to just go home at that point but i didn’t know where the people i came with were and i knew they were inebriated so i had to ask my younger aunt who was sober (since she was driving herself and her boyfriend) to help me find everyone and get ready to leave. I will not that or less significance in my mind, some drunk lady i swear i don’t know but somehow knows my name tapped my shoulder and was like “heyyy christian i didn’t know you’d be here!!” and went for a hug so i just opted cause that’s the normal reaction but then she went to do the french double cheek kiss thing and didn’t move far enough on the second swing leading to almost straight on my nose. So i twisted my head and tried to step away as a little whiskey scented spot was planted on my cheek. This being before airport casanova set up his game plan to cop a feel. But those two events contributed to making that experience unfun and i’m even more upset with myself that i let myself end up in that situation. im happy that nothing really bad happened and that i could go home fine unhurt and all, but it’s what’s stoking my frustration at myself is that i let myself get convinced into going, knowing i would rather stay home. I really wish i could go back and unfold under the pressure but that gets me nowhere as i already know yet im still bitter at myself over it. I at least know for certain i’m never gonna allow myself to end up in that situation again so that’s good, but as it stands now, i am just not in a great mood over it. I’ll get over it though for certain though so it can culminate to be whatever at the end of it all.

i may firmly be in the throes of a very in-depth post-crisis re-read for my janet fic so i'm not really reading current comics (also, current comics don't super excite me), but i am making the exception once a month for td: r, so i will put my spoiler-y thoughts on td: r #3 below the cut

tim-bernard continues to be very bland and inoffensive to me. they're fine. i don't hate it. but it's just. kind of dull to me?? like i really don't feel like meghan is writing them in a way that shows they have a ton of chemistry imo. just lots and lots of meghan writing tim to be constantly emphasizing over and over and over again how happy he is! how much he likes bernard! how bernard is the greatest thing that is happening to him! without really showing us i guess? and maybe it is that the art style being so stylized (i don't hate it, but it is very unique) not really being conducive to showing romantic chemistry? it's just their interactions this series have been. one side hug. then they sit at a table across from each other. tim thinks about how wonderful bernard is. then in this issue, bernard interacts with tim as robin. they sit across from each other on a couch. tim thinks about how wonderful bernard is. meghan is just not doing a good job at showing me why i should become invested in them. she's doing a great job telling me that tim thinks that bernard is wonderful and she is not convincing me!! i'm sorry.

on that note, bernard def knows tim is robin. which is also contributing to the overall boredom i feel. because he's just so placidly understanding because he knows the secret!! there is literally no conflict. everything is working out without any speed bumps at all. i am driving endlessly through the cornfields over here.

on the other hand i can't yet tell if this is making me slightly suspicious of bernard. is the emphasis on how in love tim is with him and how much he wants to trust himself to open up and how happy he is and how bernard is the greatest thing that's every happened to him a long set up for an inevitable betrayal of tim by bernard where bernard is actually the mastermind behind it all? is that why we keep harkening back to the chaos monster?

i do highly doubt this given the cover solicits with the kiss. it's probably just boring writing that is meghan really trying to sell this relationship because of how invested she's in it. more than likely the big reveal will be bernard knows he's robin and now tim's worries about his double life disappear along with our only source of potential narrative conflict of having a secret identity and managing a relationship with a civilian and i will remain zoned out driving through my cornfield.

i do love, love, love the emphasis on sherlock holmes + tim as a detective. it is one thing I think she's getting right.

It was a needed break and it's honestly nice for a series with this scope to just have an issue that's just a couple of people talking before realizing they want to be a couple. There's still action, but there's an art in that and i've read plenty of great comics that are indeed just people. It just felt out of place at the time for this work.. but now it falls into place.

And perhaps this chapter will too but outisde of the brutal and heartbreaking final scene... it's just okay. It's not terrible, Gibbons coudln't DRAW terrible if he tried, and all the pieces of the story are lining up as we find out the missing people are working on a lovecraftian slimy squid, the new fronteirsman, the horribly alt right paper Rorshach loves might be onto something and Dan breaks All Shach Everything out despite Laurie's protests, as he clearly does know something. Shack Kkklansman is naturally ungreatful and supsects Laurie, and was about to break out anyway, slaughttering some sobs who came to kill him. It's not a bad plot it simply lacks tension because by this point we KNOW Rorshach can kill anything. As such we know he'll probably be out or at least have these guys nuts in a vice, shockingly not literally, before they even get there.

As such while the raid on the prison is pretty fucking awesome thanks to good old Archie, Dan's awesome owlship, it otherwise feels like this chapter is simply moving everything into place. I get why: The next one is Laurie's backstory issue and thus will only move the plot along ever so slightly like the other spotlight issues thus far, and after that the climax of the story. So they needed a plot heavy issue and had I been viewing the story all in one go I probably woudln't of even noticed a slight dip in quality or in Gibbons visual storytelling. It still looks good it just dosen't have the kind of deep sequences or symmetry that really makes his stuff stand out. It's still gorgeous and memorable just not as much. It's why this issue isnj't truly bad.. it's a step down.. but it's a step down in what's considered , and as i've done this project can confrim indeed is, one of the greatest comics of all time. So a little slip is okay. OUr heroes are in position, Laurie decides to get shot up into space by her ex, and our two remaning heroes flee the police who are targeting them

Seriously the end of the world is a hair's length away, rioting is probably breaking out en masse.. and your hunting down Shach Fu instead of I dunno stopping an old man from getting beaten to death. I mean granted Roshach, Mishack Abendego is objectively awful and probably should be in prison, but he's not a threat to you or anyone right now and your wasting manpower while the world is ending to hunt down TWO guys in costumes. Like normalyl two costumed guys who done did a jailbreak, i'd get that, but come on. You have bigger issues.

So yeah.... we come to the old man death.. .aka Hollis Sad Tragic Death. I remember it more from the directors cut of the movie, and that version is amazing and i'll get into that when we get to the movie at the end of the year, but here it's still brutal and heartbreaking as a bunch of teenage hoods up to do no goods... kill the poor man who can barely fight back even with all his experince simply because they got the wrong nite owl. It's senseles, brutal, and terrible. It also does feed into a theme of the book I just caught onto: the inner darkness of man. How far we can go simply by saying what we're doing is right. We've seen the GOOD of that sort of attiude, with Dan trying to end armageddon, but we've also seen the back: Rorshach refuses to compromises and judges everyone, the cops are hunting heroes instead of helping people, the comedian happily slaughtered whoever he could and wanted to , manhattan changed the course of history for the worse simply because someone told him it was the right thing to do. People can be good and do the right thing.. but they can just as often package the worst option possible as the right thing and double down no matter what. And as we'll see soon enough.. our villian falls under these lines.

So yeah a decent issue, if with one hell of a gutpunch ending. We'll see where it heads next month so follow me to see what happens next or go read the comics yourselves, and i'll see you next time.

No more need for running water, electricity or McDonald's? What do you want? What do you want the World to do? You're not conveying any message other than Hate. You just scream and yell like 3 year old children. You hate everything. We get it, but what do you want? When you come up with your answer be sure to keep in mind that you can't even get 10 people in your family to agree, so how in the world do you think that you're going to get 8 billion people to agree? Some people don't like peppermint patties, and you'll never force them to eat them. Some people don't like soda, not everyone will drink it. We're all different people. We're only going to be successful in having Freedom to choose. But we all have to contribute to society. We need people to make cars, houses, phones, skateboards, roads, pizza and salads. If you don't like it, then come up with a different solution. If you say communism or Socialism you're not even aware of what that entails. Either of those will grant you and everyone else to have a Free TV, phone, car, home, and everything you ever wanted but we're all going to be stuck with the knock off brand of every product made. We're not all going to get Rolex's, we're getting a super simple plastic watch that will work for however long. Same with your phone, car, couch, bicycle. You're going to have the most basic items that can be produced. The car will have roll up windows, not power windows. And the rich, will still be rich, probably more than ever. You'll never get their money. Every type of government, regardless if it's Capitalism, Communism, Socialism, Marxism or even a King and Queen will always fail because of greed at the top. Whoever is running the show, always seems to take the money. That has happened with reliability since the beginning of governments. I have no idea what the answer is, but right now Capitalism offers everyone the greatest opportunity to live a prosperous Life. The harder you work the more you will always earn. I’ve played soccer for over 10 years, literally an obsession. Now, these are not the cleats that I’ve used for the past 10 years, my feet have obviously grown. These are the ones I’ve used for the past 3 soccer seasons. They hold many memories for me, good and bad. As you can tell from the photo, they are not in the greatest condition. They have been taped multiple times, wrapped with pre-wrap, and are coated with dirt from our lovely school’s soccer field. The bottoms are falling off, the laces are ripped from their sockets, and they don’t smell the greatest. Though, through all of the worn these shoes have gone through, they tell a story of my career. They tell all of the goals I’ve made, or the assists I’ve contributed in. They even show the effort I’ve put into the game, fighting til the very last minute of the match.

Now, these cleats were on the verge of complete destruction my senior year. I had teammates, coaches, and trainers asking me if I was getting new cleats. The answer was always no for two reasons. 1. It was my senior year and getting new cleats would only be needed for about 7 weeks. More importantly 2. They were a symbol of my years spent on the team that I love, and I couldn’t imagine not spending one last season with them.

These cleats have finally been retired, probably to be never used again. And while that holds a melancholy feeling, it will always be something that reminds me of happiness.
