Having Sad Thoughts about Gale being the one who’s not able to cope after the war instead of Bucky.

Bucky has his struggles but he’s managing better, finds his structure and methods he needs. But all the trauma that Gale had been pushing down and ignoring during the war can’t be buried anymore, he doesn’t have the life-or-death tension to keep him focused, everything comes up like a raging inky flood and he’s breaking, drowning.

This is also an excuse to write hundreds of words of just Bucky cradling a sleeping Gale in his arms as he lies on his lap with his head resting in the crook of Bucky’s arm. Bucky smoothing his now-slightly-longer hair and petting Gale’s scarred, hollow face.

Do you think Gale could have had a bit of a bad rep growing up? Maybe not exactly a rep but like.. people probably knew what his dad was like and I could imagine it kinda haunting Gale, gossip or people expecting him to turn out the same, and so no matter how hard he tried to be good, to be perfect, people would still look down on him. And Gale probably didn’t have his more aloof veneer until he was in his teens and it makes me sad to think of a tiny baby Gale who’s probably on the quieter and shyer side trying his best and people sorta sneering or giving that condescending pitying look or telling their children not to befriend him. Now I’m thinking of a baby Gale that likes to hide against and clutch at his mom’s skirt… this is derailing lol

Oh man you’re killing me with this concept 💔 I can definitely see this happening. There would be this stigma forced on him from his father’s reputation that just shadows him everywhere. When he’s young he doesn’t quite understand it or why people are treating him this way, but as he gets older he starts to realize and maybe that’s when he starts developing his mask, his aloof personality and detachment. He can pretend it’s not there or doesn’t affect him.

I’d imagine that contributes in some way to his drive to succeed, to be the best, to get people to respect him. I feel like a part of him is always afraid of what people will think of him and or how they’ll treat him, and maybe he never talks about his past either because he’s afraid of that stigma coming back. It takes a long time for him to even open up to Bucky, and only after he truly realizes that Bucky won’t judge him like that. Maybe the pressure in combination with his baggage is stressing him out and something happens to bring it to a head, and Bucky gets the story out of Gale. It’s definitely a wound Gale would carry, and drives his actions in adulthood.
