The power of positive reinforcement and choice based training! 🐊

My coworker and I have been working with our baby American alligators with a goal of being able to voluntarily pick them up and hold them for programming! And today was the first time I was able to lift her off the ground!!

Her primary trainer has done suchhhh a good job getting her to station and crate - Ruth RUNS to the crate when it’s presented, and as you can see here I am able to put my hands underneath her and lift her up with no fear from her.

Just goes to show with dedication, patience, and choice anything is possible! 🐊

Nautilus! The silly goofy creature!

These guys are quite rare in most societies, with less than a million around the world. Almost their entire bodies are covered in a massive shell that they can retract into as a defence! They also sleep and sit down in there too, it’s very funny-looking.

I didn’t change much from the actual game because they are perfect Though I did make some alterations.

Natuli have a total of 11 limbs (much less than a real Nautilus, I know). They have four arms, four tentacles and three legs. The tentacles have a sheath that they retract into (the bit with the spots!) The third leg is actually what later evolved into a tail in Inklings and Octolings, but Nautili kept it as they still need extra support for their heavy shells. FYI They walk on two legs, but they stand on three.

Nautili are born with their shells, and cannot remove them or repair them if they are chipped or cracked. As a result, they take extremely good care of their shells, always polishing it and stuff.

Unlike Inkfish, these guys have no suckers, no ink sac and they only have a single heart. They have four kidneys though, so i guess that makes up for it. They also have no chromatophores, so they can’t change colour and are always a shade of whitish-pink and red.

Though since they are cephalopods, they’ve got blue blood and a beak. It isn’t nearly as strong as a inkfish though, but strong enough to easily bite off your fingers with a single chomp.

Being a rather rare species, Nautilus-specific services such as clothing and healthcare are unfortunately hard to come by if you don’t live in the city, so most Nautili live in urban areas.

Where one chapter ends, another begins… ✏️ 📖

Yesterday was my last day working in the zoo field.

There were many factors that lead to this decision, and it definitely wasn’t an easy decision, but at this time it is best for me to step away and try something new.

While I will miss working with, building relationships, and training animals, at least I have some fond memories and pictures to look back on. It definitely hasn’t been always good, but even with the bad days, weeks, and years, there were still plenty of moments of happiness and I am thankful I could always count on the animals in my care to bring my joy.

I’m gonna miss these little critters, but it is time to move forward to new adventures! Let the next chapter begin… ✏️ 📖

Thank you for visiting me on this tumblr as I shared my zoo experiences and pictures/videos of animals being dumb with everyone here. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll remember the hardships the field has put me through. To be honest, I still haven’t recovered from what was done to me at my first facility - but I have been feeling much better with my life outside of work recently, and I feel like a career change is the next step in my healing journey.

I will never stop loving animals, and while I am not as active on this blog as I used to be, I hope to still inspire others to care about the world around us while also continuing to share my own fitness journey.

Arrow-tailed, Adrift in Hues

If you’re wondering about her tail, Inklings have an utterly RIDICULOUS amount of genetic diversity, especially when you get closer to the Deepsea Metro. It’s common for Deepsea folk to have a set of fins instead of a tail club down there. Helps with balance.

Her patterns are based off a cuttlefish, and her tail is reminiscent of a Grimalditeuthis bonplandi’s double, heart-shaped fins.

I have my first actual date date with a woman next weekend (that isn’t just like. Friends hanging out and it being that weird space in-between/where there’s some intimacy but you’re not really a thing lol idk iykyk).

For the record, I’m still not really wanting to like, start up some new long-term thing right now, but I really wanted to meet people and put myself out there/practice dating after so long and everything, especially since aspects of this are new to me and I want to learn to do the pursuing rather than just waiting around for someone to pursue me. I feel like it will be good to build up my confidence with stuff like that.

But yeah, this girl has been really cool to talk to, so I just went for it and asked her, and now we have plans next Saturday! I feel proud of myself and excited to hang out with her.
