What do you think Jin Guangyao needs the most in a romantic partner?

Hi there! Sorry for the late reply ^^;

Honestly? Given canon, I think this little guy needs first and foremost to feel respected by his partner, the assurance that he is seen as an equal despite his background and baggage.

I'll also say that he'd need to trust them, and while trust is a staple of any relationship, in JGY's case, the fact that he is aware of the things he had to do throughout his life, feeling like he is not going to be accepted by his partner would already nulify the first requirement of respect.

Can't feel respected when he is convinced that his partner is going to think less of him, or even stop loving him if they were to know everything about him. So even subconsciously he is working on the assumption that he isn't an equal to his partner if he feels like he cannot share this part of him with them.

So the perfect romantic partner for him, in my opinion, would have to be a person that not only treats him like he isn't either inferior or superior, but that can also show enough open-mindness and... let's call it grayness of morality for him to feel like he is going to be understood if/when he opens up about the less flattering side of him.

Also validation. It's very important that he is told that he is, in fact, a good boy on a regular basis :')

Question for jc antis:

If jc hated wwx so much he wanted to kill him after he resurrected, why didnt he? He had multiple opportunities so why did he say he was going to drag him back to lotus pier to kowtow in the jiang ancestral hall? Why did he never truly harm him despite having every right to for killing jin zixuan and yanli? He yells at him and threatens him but the only one he's really murderous towards is wen ning (which is another can of worms on both their ends). Like yall for someone who supposedly hates wwx to the point of wanting him dead, he does a lot to keep him alive (literally reread the guanyin temple scene). You dont have to think theyre romantic or even friendly but saying jc was murderous towards wwx lacks reading the book and watching cql with nuance. It leaves out the core ideas that you cant and shouldnt believe rumors you hear. Mxtx sets up this idea in chapter fucking one, as well as the idea that society is the villain, not any one person. Please actually look at things a bit deeper than than the tide pool shallow comprehension you all seem to be reading/watching with. This story deserves more than that.

Modern MDZS au where WWX gets in a debate with college professor LQR about LGBTQA+ stuff, probably bc WWX is “corrupting” LWJ with the gay agenda. And stealing all of LWJ’s turtlenecks, for some odd reason! The boy clearly can’t take care of his own clothes, they’re all tattered and his hair is a birds nest.

Anyways, LWR is going on about how the homos are lecherous filth that have fallen to temptation or smth while covering up their transgressions by naming themselves odd things. Really, LQR asks, “what even is a pan-sexual?” (Or some other such thing that shows he doesn’t actually know anything anout being queer)

“Oh, you don’t know?” WWX asks, eyes wide and innocent and CLEARLY up to Some Shit. “Professor Lan, Professor Lan, Professor ‘show your sources do your research’ LAN. Do you not know what we’re debating about?”

LQR huffs and starts saying something about family values and continuing on bloodlines, but WWX is grinning like the cat that caught the canary.

“Professor, have you ever actually researched this? Or are you just wasting my time?” (An actual LQR quote from earlier in the semester)

LQR puffs up, and he’s all “of course I haven’t-“

“Well then, Sir,” WWX interrupts, manic joy written all over his expression, “may I just say that you have the audacity of a white man insisting that Mandarin is just a type of orange.”

The bell rings before LQR can get a word in, and WWX grabs his bag and books it to the door.

“I’ll send you some reading, Professor Lan! Let’s do this again when you know what you’re talking about!”

And with that he’s gone.

Now, WWX is only a little bit of a hypocrite, bc he definitely thought he was straight and only just managed his Revelation of “oh heck Lan Zhan is so pretty he turned me gay?” *research montage bc he actually has resources (and NHS definitely helped.) “Oh maybe girls are just pretty and I’m demisexual.”

However, the fact that he only JUST did this, means his ADHD self still has all the tabs open. And, like, he did say he’d send stuff, and this is Lan Zhan’s uncle. So, he compiles a helpful list of sites and articles, includes a link to a place where you can ask questions to the Queer Council, and sends it off.

LQR is initially going to ignore it, but then his scholar brain gets the better of him. WWX had made a point, he was woefully unprepared, and so with the intention of finding points to throw in that little brat’s face, he braces himself for horrible outlandish untraditional family-breaking nastiness, plus whatever else WWX might have put in there (ancestors if that horrid boy sent him PORN he’ll have him expelled) and opens the links.

He finds a bunch of actual helpful websites.

Definitions for all the names, labels, flags. Helpful tips for understanding yourself. Pictures of couples holding hands, smiling happily.

“Love isn’t just for procreation.”

Resources for kids who’s parents kicked them out. Survival tips. Unsafe areas.

And, because I’m personally a big fan of Demisexual WWX, a whole bunch of websites on the Asexual spectrum. You know, where people say, “oh yeah, apparently other people actually DO feel that urge to have sex with people. The songs aren’t making stuff up y’all. We’re just built different.”

LQR: nani tf?

Thus begins a confused deep dive into asexuality, what it means, allosexuals and all that jazz. LQR actually does end up asking a question on one of the sites, something like:

“I always believed that people who allowed themselves to be lustful and fall into bed with others were simply unrestrained. Is it true that some people feel an actual need for this? I have felt attraction for a woman before, but I never felt the need that some popular media attests to.”

There’s a bunch of replies, but one sticks out to LQR:

“Gonna be crude for a sec, excuse me- did you actually want to bang her? Or were you friends and heteronormative society insisted that boys and girls gotta want to fuck?”

LQR, who as a young man looked at CSSR and thought “If I have to marry, I wouldn’t mind her”: 🤯🤯🤯

Oh no.

He has to face that smirking little brat WWX.

MXTX thoughts; conventions

The long awaited (not) analysis of MXTX conventions is here! I’ve literally been meaning to talk about this for months but it got sidelined in favour of vicious arguing on PDB about MBTI. Anyways! Obviously this post will contain spoilers, and something I wanted to touch on was 3rd person limited in MXTX, but I already have a post on that here, so feel free to check that out for a better explanation of it. Beware of mediocre analysis ahead, I’m a little rusty (also shoutout to the person who liked some of my posts this morning, you reminded me to actually write something!).

NON-LINEAR STORYLINES

An interesting thing that follows MXTX’s more thought out works, is the non-linear plotlines she follows in them. This itself is a really good convention of writing in general, especially if it’s done well, and I can safely say that MXTX did it astoundingly well in TGCF. The clear cuts between time periods in relation to each book is an incredible feat, and is something that easily trumps MXTX's other examples of non-linear storylines. Through the use of the jumping back and forth in time, specifically in TGCF, creates an excellent cause and effect, something that is definitely central to the novel. Everything done has an effect, whether that be on the continuation of the plot, or even as a characterisation point, so the non-linear narrative cements that sense of foreboding hanging over everything. A simple sentence said when Xie Lian 17 somehow amounts to a complete upheaval of the heavens 800 years later, unveiling a conspiracy well over 2000 years old. A friendship group dissolving due to difficult circumstances results in a really horrific friendship confession later in the novel. Shi Wudu trying to save his sibling ends his own demise, the crippling of said sibling, and a vengeful ghost with nothing to do anymore. This nonlinear storyline is definitely used in MDZS as well, but I found it a bit more complex, and actually, now that I think about it, is a really good reflection of Wei Wuxian in general. The thing with MXTX, is that all her novels are in 3rd person limited, so they follow our protagonist in 3rd person, but it’s tinged with their own personal views and biases that limit the omniscience of 3rd person. And with MDZS it would be a fair assessment to say that the unordered mess of time leaps in the novel are an excellent indication of Wei Wuxian’s bias leaking through the 3rd person. The incessant jumping is difficult to follow in places (don’t say otherwise), but it’s actually a genius idea because it’s an accurate assessment of the thought process that Wei Wuxian probably follows anyway. I wouldn’t say that this was definitely on purpose however, as MDZS was written before TGCF, so it could just be MXTX growing alongside her writing, but hey, maybe it is a stroke of complete and beautiful genius! Don’t bother mentioning SVSSS, it’s definitely an interesting novel, but it’s not non-linear, at least not as wholly as MDZS and TGCF are. The most you’ll get in SVSSS is like a two line flashback, plus the extra’s, but I think that’s a reflection of when MXTX wrote it.

DYING AND RESURRECTION

Moving on from serious conventions, MXTX’s trope with one of the main characters dying and then coming back later is a really funny kind of convention, because it’s not funny in the moment obviously, but the fact that it’s done at least once per novel is hilarious. Wei Wuxian’s initial resurrection after 13 years of being dead, Shen Qingqiu’s return in his plant body 5 years later, and then his return back to his ‘original’ body, and Hua Cheng’s little death defying stunt at the end of the novel. Then there’s the use of cliffs and such, like Binghe’s fall into the Abyss, Hua Cheng’s fall off that wall (forgive me its been like 3 years since I read TGCF), and if we’re being inclusive, then there’s always Wei Wuxian’s death in The Untamed. Maybe there’s a hidden meaning in there somewhere, but it’s fine to look at it from a surface level, which amounts to ‘MXTX got bored and needed some drama’. A perfectly reasonable deduction. 

COLOUR SYMBOLISM

Another thing I wanted to touch on was the colour symbolism that MXTX uses because I think it’s pretty cool, AND it has the added benefits of adding symbolism and contrast to each novel's main character and their love interest. It’s mentioned in the novel’s obviously, but it really shines in fan content and fanarts. I like the symbolism of Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu’s robes both being green before the time-skip, because Luo Binghe was a disciple at the time and a little white lotus, so the green was used to directly align him with Shen Qingqiu. After the timeskip he’s obviously got his big boy pants on and swapped to a stunning black and red ensemble, fitting of the protagonist, and that itself contrasts Shen Qingqiu’s majestic and lofty green robes, because Binghe means business with this fit. A fun thought is how green and red fit together on the colour spectrum, because they don’t, they’re contrasting colours which is some real obvious symbolism. Do I really need to spell out Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian? I feel like this one is rudimentary. White equals noble and virtuous, pure and holy, and black is evil, demonic, cruel, and scary. Simple! And Hua Cheng and Xie Lian’s red and white are a very cute mixture, because although it gives them a Bingqiu style christmas tree vibe, it’s interesting in comparison to the previous two love interest and main character dynamics, considering red and white are a lot more complimentary than black and white or red and green. And it’s a testament to how similar Hualian are with their complimentary robes, how like-minded they are throughout the novel, especially considering their predecessors. Or maybe I’m overthinking it, who knows?

CHARACTER TROPES

In regards to tropes of MXTX, I think her character tropes are incredible and have the addition of being really funny. She’s consistent enough with her conventions that clear links can be drawn with her side characters across all 3 novels. To begin with, there’s Mr Angry. I think you can guess who that is, but it's Jiang Cheng, Liu Qingge, and Mu Qing. All have a really close relationship with their related main character, all are angry or harsh where they probably didn't need to be, and all three are good fighters. Then there’s the guy who’s always smiling, like Yue Qingyuan or Lan Xichen. Complacency is a key part of their characters, and excuses aside, it’s interesting how it played out. You could argue for Jun Wu to be a part of this circle, but I’ll keep that to myself. Finally, there’s the fodder characters, only useful to further the plot in a miniscule way. Gongyi Xiao (MAY HE REST WELL), Xiao Xingchen, and once again, I don’t have a very good TGCF equivalent. Gongyi Xiao dies after the events of the water prison, and Xiao Xingchen was really just there to highlight how fucked up Xue Yang was. Rest in peace our beloved fodder, especially Gongyi Xiao, MXTX should have treated you better…

I think I’ve typed myself out honestly. Kudos to whoever reached the end of this post, I haven’t written this much since my Team 7 analysis when I got back into my Naruto phase briefly.

I haven't consumed MDZS in any direct form, but I have a close fandom friend who is super into it and it is WILD following you and then also listening to her takes, haha. (She is a NMJ stan. I've sent her a few of your posts and she's been like, "lol wow this person seems perfectly pleasant and intelligent but we have diametrically opposed character opinions.")

Maybe I'll get around to watching the show eventually so I can form my own Extremely Correct Character Opinions. xD

lmaooooo oh boy i do imagine we have diametrically opposed character opinions 😬 fwiw most of my opinions come from the novel rather than the show because the show sure does make some Decisions about jgy because of censorship reasons. dunno if that changes anything for your friend!

tbh tho there are only a few character opinions vis-a-vis jgy that i am very inflexible on:

he is not evil! this is probably the most important one, and everything else stems from this point, such as

he does not lie nearly as often as his harshest critics insist he does

he is not into incest, that was never something he sought either from qin su (he did not know!! that they were siblings!!! when they had sex!!) or mo xuanyu, i don't even know where these takes come from arrrgh

he never, ever, ever would have sought to cause lan xichen harm. this is NOT the same as him indirectly causing lan xichen harm and pain through his actions, because of course he does that. but his relationship with lxc is on another plane of existence in comparison to his other canon relationships, and however one chooses to interpret that relationship, it's crucial to his character

I'm re-reading mdzs, and these are a few highlights that capture my attention:

Wei Wuxian getting all disappointed because of his new face. He is not as handsome as he was :( but after he washes his face, he is not that discouraged; his new face is kinda handsome. 

MXTX (probably unintendedly,) pulling the autistic Lan Wangji agenda, because apparently, the man sleeps better with a body over him (his is the ancient weighted blanket!!!) Because the man NEEDS to follow his routine, because the man NEEDS to fold his clothes in a specific way, BECAUSE THE MAND FIDGETS WITH PEEBLES. (Me inwardly: I salute you Hanguang Jun!! // I've seen people diagnosing characters, wanting and needing so much to label them, maybe in an attempt to relate more to them, but Lan Wangji IS AUTISTIC; he is one of those persons who doesn't need a diagnostic, a single glance from a professional (or other autistic person) can confirm. I don't know why I missed this, maybe because I always saw his behaviuor as normal, and honestly back then I was so invested in the whole plot and this never rang a bell.)

Nie Huaisang having a little fanboy moment and hiding behind his fan when Lan Wanji enters the room carrying bridal style MXY/WWX, when it was WIDELY known Hanguang Jun's aversion to physical touch. 1) His plan is working REVENGE IS SO CLOSE 2)So glad his bestie is alive 3)Feign ignorance 4)WTF is going between these two ????!!!!! *panic noises*

Lan Wangji has NEVER brought someone over to Gusu, the little Lan disciples have grown seeing his strict teacher always alone AND SUDDENLY, he brings this man who is supposedly a lunatic?? Of course this junior cultivator has something special, of course they are going to obey and listen, but not just because LWJ's authority, because this man KNOWS!!! Once in Gusu, a disciple asks who MXY/WWX is, and Lan Sizhui NEVER answers directly. Lan Sizhui saw how LWJ treated him, he also saw how Jiang Cheng wanted to capture him... Lan Sizhui isn't sure of MXY/WWX's identity since the beginning.

All I ask is to please check your sources before you reblog something that contains text such as 'violence is necessary'. Is it made by someone living in the affected area? Ok then,reblog away. Or is is made by a white westerner writing from the comfort of their living room? If it's the latter,check their politics. Maybe in America or other western countries saying you're a communist is seen as edgy or cool. In the parts of the world who suffered from it,it's not much different from saying you're a Nazi. So all I ask is to please not contribute to the illusion that these types of guys are qualified to talk politics or ethics. They are not. Nor do they have ANY regard for human life unless it fits their agenda.

1 - /The/ Ship - Okay, though I ship so many varieties, my heart will always belong to Nie Huaisang/Jiang Cheng - they are the ship of my heart and my happy place :D

2 - Honourable Mention Ship - This would have to be Nie Huaisang/Nie Zonghui - they're just so soft, with endlessly loyal NZH who adores his sect leader's little brother in ways that are far from professional and he fights himself over it, and NHS won't let him back away when he realizes his feelings are returned, so... yeah, I have feelings about them lol.

15 - Ship you wish was more popular - There are a LOT, but if I had to pick 1, it would be Nie Huaisang/Jiang Cheng/Qin Su. I fell for the SangChengSu agenda, and they have so much potential for canon era fics! I love you JGY but you will not survive when they get together to make your life hell.

16 - Ship you wish was less popular - omg I'm going to get hate for this ISTG, but... WangXian. I enjoy them, they're the core of the fandom, but they're *everywhere*, to the point that some people even get combative if you want to talk shipping one of them with someone else. I just wish there was more room for other ships, but they seem to metaphorically suck all the air out of the room till there's nothing but them.
