okay i need to nerd out for a sec. pokemon au. here's what starter pokemon the party have + im right because i was severely hyperfixated on pokemon for many many years. i'm also only including the regional starter pokemon here and not pikachu and eevee just to make things easier for me

mike has an oshawott. why? because he looks like an oshawott and pokemon look like their trainers. his oshawott is incredibly stubborn and unwilling to listen to mike at first, but they eventually do bond and become hashtag besties for the resties!!!!!! he eventually evolves into a samurott because Sword. oshawott's nature is bold and his characteristic is a little quick tempered.

lucas has a snivy (him and mike are both from unova in this ok) because he thought snivy looked cool and decided that he needed to have one. lucas and snivy get along very well - much better than mike and oshawott did at first. they're very good buddies and she eventually evolves into a serperior and is a very powerful, well-rounded pokemon. lucas adores her. her nature is adamant and her characteristic is good perseverance.

max my best friend max has a scorbunny of COURSE. he's super athletic and very good at battling but those things often go to his head and he can be a bit of a little shit sometimes, so max has to keep him in check. he's very sweet though and just kinda stays the way he is and never evolves. which max is cool with because she likes scorbunny the way he is too!! his nature is sassy and his characteristic is thoroughly cunning.

will has a mudkip. because well. he looks like a mudkip and also mudkip are very Alert to things much like he is. mudkip is very shy and she doesn't really like interacting with anyone except will, which he's fine with, but he does try and get her to put herself out there she gets along great with mike's oshawott btw when she feels up to it. eventually she evolves into a marshtomp and while she's not a very strong battler, she's loyal to a fault, which will loves. her nature is timid and her characteristic is alert to sounds.

dustin has a turtwig (because of yertle). turtwig never evolves, but that doesn't actually matter because he is a fucking TANK. like, people will see him and not really expect much because he's just a Little Guy but oh man can dustin's turtwig pack a punch. he's incredibly loyal and resilient and smart and dustin loves his turtwig. so much. they're best friends. turtwig's nature is hardy and his characteristic is highly curious.

el has a fennekin. fennekin is just the sweetest little thing. just a little tiny girl fr. the cutest. el brags about having chosen the best starter Constantly. the two are best friends like actually having sleepovers and gossiping and the whole shebang. she eventually evolves into a delphox (hahaha psychic type) and is ridiculously powerful. like, near unbeatable, but she still maintains her very sweet demeanor. her nature is gentle and her characteristic is likes to relax.

So, you wanna play a Pokémon TTRPG

But you don't have the time to manage 1K entries in a book? Well, I'm working on the thing for you! PokéD6.

Now that I've show you my character sheet concept, let me break down some of the things on it. The biggest thing anyone will notice right away is the lack any numbered stats. This system converts existing BSTs (Base Stat Totals) into a 6 point grade. Above, each black diamond (✦) represents one point of that stat's grade. And any pre-existing pokemon can have it's BST quickly converted by simply dividing any given stat's total by 36 and rounding up, to a max of 6! Each grade also has an associated number of dice, which are always equal to the grade itself, and an associated modifier. A stat's modifier is equal to it's grade plus it's IVs. IVs, represented by the hollow diamonds (✧), have also been simplified down into a single dice roll per stat. So, whenever you capture a new pokemon, roll 6d6. Like with stat grades, each diamond represents the IVs value. IVs cap out at 3.

But, you may find yourself asking, what do Stat Dice and Stat Modifiers even do?

Currently, they're for combat! While the attack itself determines how much damage it can do, the pokemon's stats determine if the attack hits, it's minimum damage, how hard they are to hit, and even how much they can reduce the damage! When attacking, say with a Physical Move, the attacking pokemon rolls 1d6 + their ATK Modifiers against the defending pokemon's DEF Modifier + 3. If the attack hits, roll the move's Power and add any bonuses given. Such as Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) or type effectiveness. The defending pokemon rolls their DEF Dice, subtracting their result from the Power roll.

Power has now been converted into d6s, to find a pre-existing move's Power divide it's power by 25 and round up! With the exception of very high damaging moves, most moves deal 1d6 to 6d6 damage.

So a move like Tackle deals 2d6 damage.

I could go on, but for now I want to leave this here and just see what people think! I've enjoyed working on it and am pretty close to being able to do a simple beta of it. So, have a copy of the pdf and lemme know what you think!

EDIT (4/20/24): Yo what if I just suddenly dropped even more rules in this post? Yea? Yea! So here's how trainers work!

Trainers are divided into four Careers; Field Researcher, League Challenger, Contest Coordinator and Pokemon Breeder! These careers determine starting gear, recommend a set of skills (more on those later!!!), and determine how the player can make money. Field Researchers are basically the intern equivalent of a Professor's Aide! They go out, encounter as many new pokemon as possible, and get paid a weekly salary! They can even earn bonuses for finding odd pokemon, such as ones with unusual movesets~! League Challengers are pokemon trainers like in the games! Beat gyms, get badges, take on the champion. Easy as! They get paid based on the trainers they defeat, which can be picked up at a PokeCenter or just given to them immediately. Contest Coordinators focus on training pokemon for Gen 3 style'd Contests! They make money by winning contests, with each rank paying out higher rewards! And lastly, Pokemon Breeders! Like the name says, they make their money by breeding and raising pokemon at the requests of the Pokemon League or other trainers. The more specific the request, the more money they earn for it!

Trainers also have skills! These work a lot like Stat Grades, but they don't have an associated modifier. When making a trainer, a player picks 6 skills out of 12. Players then have 18 points to distribute however they want into those 6 skills, up to a maximum of 5. The other skills are left at 1. The skills available are: Archeology, Cheering, Climbing, Cooking, Fishing, Foraging, Knowledge, Nursing, Riding, Sneaking, Spotting and Swimming!

I completely missed that a Mortasheen book was getting kickstarted! What's the best way to get updates on that? Is there some way to sign up for a bogleech.com news letter? I don't want to miss when it comes out

Oh it was kickstarted three years ago, but with the intention of coming out in only one year. A lot of stuff happened :( It's a tabletop RPG that's actually been in development by other folks for now a grand total of I think 15 years, with me just being the art and concept side. I was never really let in on 90% of that development or what caused it to go on that long but now I have enough stuff together that I should be able to get the book out for real in 2024, with the help of the remaining gameplay dev Morgan Mullins, a huge boost of additional development help from @gutsygills, and a dozen different artists I've paid to contribute.

Having sunk so much of my life into it, I won't make it at all possible for people to miss when it comes out. It's basically the thing I have to bank on as my main career for the foreseeable future, the first book is only intended as the start of a series of expansions, it'll have its own official website and get pitched to actual gaming stores. I've been really sweating to make it look as professional-ish as possible.

Like the core D&D books it will have to be fairly pricey, we're looking at 200-300 pages, but I'd also put out much cheaper digital versions, and maybe little skinny "monsters only" books for people who just want to look at those :)

The stats/abilities on these pages are already a little out of date, the gameplay system had some last minute updates following a lot of backer playtesting!

I dunno how many people reading this have maybe never heard of Mortasheen yet but it's a horror-comedy flavored homage to Pokemon and Digimon set in a world sort of like ours, thousands of years from now where there's goofy monsters and mutants and biotech while humans are very rare and endangered. Actually the setting most similar to it now is Adventure Time of all things, if it had a whole lot more body horror and no magic (but lots of biotechnology indistinguishable from it). But when development of this game began, Adventure Time was just that weird short pilot Nickelodeon passed up on. Now it will be coming out after Adventure Time had a finale, sequel movies and the first season of a followup series. It has literally taken more than an entire Adventure Time to get this done :( I did not mean for an answer to an ask to go on this long but it occurs to me as important information for my followers in general!!!

Hanamusa, Explained

There is a nonzero chance if you follow me on tumblr, you’ve seen the term ‘Hanamusa’ attached to something I shared. It’s probably also some super cute art of Delia Ketchum and Jessie Teamrocket, and you may wonder what is going on and also, why is there so much good art of this.

Hanamusa as a term derives from the Japanese names of the characters – Hanako and Musashi. If you’re into shipping name structures, Hana-Musa implies that Hanako is the seme and Musashi the uke, but I don’t think that holds for all use cases of the type of terminology. It’s a ship. It’s an AU ship, as in an ‘alternate universe’ ship, where the two characters are presented in a context outside of the normal context of the anime presentation of them.

The Hanamusa ship as I understand it is set at some point after Jessie and James stop chasing Ash around, and Jessie settles down into a relationship with Delia. There’s tension about her history with Ash and the confusion about finding Your Personal Villain dating your mom, but mostly it’s about showing a sweet domestic life between two characters you know very well in a format I kind of see as like, Comedy-Sabot Romantic 4koma. Like, Hanamusa content is funny (and it is VERY funny) but it doesn’t need to be funny, because the main thing it’s about is showing these two characters and their relationship as they do cute things together.

It’s why people watch shows like K-On basically.

As for where this idea comes from, (EDIT: Slightly wonky wording here, I should have phrased 'this current fandom push' - I don't have any reason to believe Mai INVENTED the ship, just that when you go looking you'll wind up at her work) it seems to have its genesis with the work of one Kiana Mai, who developed this ship some time ago. Kiana Mai is also an extremely skilled artist, and one of those skills seems to be focus, creating these extremely clean-line excellently structured scene vignettes with no unnecessary content in them but also no need to rocket along. It’s amazing, engaging work that uses every part of the small format amazingly well. Which makes sense because one of the things Kiana Mai does is storyboarding work for Disney animated TV shows, a task at which I am sure she no doubt excels.

What I think is the most interesting aspect of Hanamusa, to me specifically, is that it manages to combine three things I don’t actually care about, in a way that doesn’t interfere with something I have unexpectedly strong opinions on. I do not watch Pokemon, and I have not shed a tear for Team Rocket and Ash Ketchum wandering into the sunset. That is a show that is not for or about my interests and that is okay. Indeed, imagining that it should be about what interests me is baffling. I think if I stopped watching a show twenty years ago, I have lost all right to act like I’m entitled to expect it remain the way it was all the way back then.

But I do have opinions on Jessie and James’ character voice. Not their voice acting – I mean, I know for a fact they’ve had to change over time and no voice actor should be obligated to kick it in the same role for what could be their entire career. I mean the way they talk about things and the words they use and kind of emphasis they put on words when they talk. About the way they voice their ideas, or the way they express who they are in the way they talk to one another, that stuff. It’s about affordances and persona, about the kind of people you project being by what words you choose to use and the affect when using them.

It’s why when, if a picture of a character is underneath it, you can read some dril posts as being ‘appropriately’ voiced by a character, even if it’s describing a candle situation that Francis Crozier did not have opinions on.

Jessie has a voice.

Jessie, in my head, is someone capable of moments of tenderness and friendship that is normally overwhelmed by an incredible confidence in ability she does not have and mere reality will never be given permission to infringe on it. Jessie is unassailably unstoppably sure of herself, thoughtlessly stupid in a way that doesn’t mean she is stupid, but which exists in a context of someone who has relentlessly pursued excellence in her job which is also the equivalent of being a late night 7/11 manager. She is the Girlboss that is Gaslighting herself into thinking she has something to Gatekeep.

Delia Ketchum by comparison is a very nice piece of wallpaper. Every appearance of her in my mind is someone Very Nice who is Very Patient and Very Supportive and has managed to keep literally all emotionally challenging conversations from happening around Ash, which can be perhaps easier when you remember that he, too, is an idiot. I don’t know how Delia Ketchum talks, but I do know that there are ways that Delia Ketchum does not talk.

This is interesting! It’s interesting because it presents a character where I am very sure I know what she does do when she does it, and a character about whom I can only be sure wouldn’t do some things. It creates a character space, and it creates expectations of affect and performance within that space. Ash and other characters show up as well, but because they get to interact with this already-defined space, you get treated to this really lovely kind of resonance. Would Ash call Jessie ‘dad’? Maybe, to bug her. He was good at being a twerp. Wasn’t he? I mean I remember it that way, he seems to work out that way, but… how would I know?

I know more of this AU where Jessie is studying to be a Pokemon Doctor and Ash wears glasses than I do of the source material any more. And if you’re wondering ‘hey, do Jessie and Delia ever meet in the source material?’ Like, yeah, for a few seconds. What, the point is creating something new.

I’m not so sure the younger players starting out with Scarlet and Violet will appreciate the nuance of a character like Larry, because they haven’t had to fight for their survival in a capitalist society yet - at that age, their guardians are still fighting the fight for them.

But as an adult in my 30s, that shit hits HARD. I remember my time in grad school, where at one point I was simultaneously a full-time student, had an internship, and was working a job on the weekends. I went literal months without seeing my friends that semester. I was lonely and miserable and kept getting sick. I was doing something I loved in grad school and at my internship - archiving - but the job (a gig as a tour guide at a historic site) was sucking the life out of me. When I finally got out of that job and started applying to archival positions, my parents actually commented on how the tour guide work had been slowly killing me.

Spoilers for Scarlet and Violet below the cut.

Larry has a job he absolutely despises, probably because he felt like he had to get one to survive, because being a Pokemon trainer often doesn’t pay the bills - in fact, we do frequently see Gym Leaders in this franchise (and even Champions, in the case of Cynthia - an archaeologist - and Steven - the scion to a business) working actual jobs. It’s not lucrative and it’s not necessarily something you can survive on doing alone. Even my favorite characters in the franchise, Ingo and Emmet, run a public transit system alongside a battle facility. It’s the former that’s likely keeping their rent paid.

Larry has distinct skill as a battler - indeed, he’s both a Gym Leader and a member of the Elite Four, specializing in a different type for each (though with a Staraptor on both teams) - and he also has a distinct Poke Ball throw reminiscent of a sidearm pitcher’s windup (see here and here for more on that). But he also talks about his actual job, which he distinctly hates, and how he hopes the player character doesn’t have to use Facade in real life. Larry’s passions lie elsewhere - perhaps in Pokemon battling, or perhaps even in a potential baseball career cut short, if his throw is anything to go by - but capitalism forced him to take an office job, and he is miserable. It’s a distinct misery you understand once you’ve had a job eat you alive and leave you next to no time for your passions - or if it does leave you that time, it exhausts you so much that you can’t do them anyway.

He hasn’t lost his kindness, though - he treats the player character to dinner, and when you battle Nemona on even footing once you’re both at Champion Rank and all the Gym Leaders come to watch, he’s in the back, but he still takes time out of his schedule to make it. He’s doing his best despite being broken down by his job. And so many of us have been there, especially now that those of us who have played since Red and Blue are now in our 30s and 40s.

The kids whose first game is Scarlet or Violet might not quite get it yet. But for those of us who wrangle with capitalism on a daily basis, Larry hits too close to home, and it makes him a great character.

(I also suspect he might be an allusion to Game Freak’s employees being overworked by TPCi, but that’s a post for another day.)

Im sorry for the lack of posts so have some stuff about each of the brozone bros in my Pokemon au(I'm currently working on Bruce's drawing dw)

John Dory

John Dory had just recently turned 18 when everyone split; putting him at 40 years old now.

John has dyslexia and OCD Wich he doesn't like to tell people.

JD went grey for a few years after returning to find branch and his grandma only to assume them dead.

He struggled with alcoholism for a bit.

JD's first Pokemon was a turtwig named Jade.

Jade managed to evolve into a grotle before certian events led to her no longer being with JD.

Before JD left for the neverglade trail he had 5 Pokemon, now he only has Rhonda.

He is very protective over Rhonda and if he can help it he won't do any battles with her.

John could never get over what he did to cause everyone to split up.

He misses all of his brothers but refuses to look for them, believing them all to hate him.

Bruce

Bruce was 16 when everyone left; now putting him at 38.

Bruce's first Pokemon was a panpour named William.

William was given to Bruce by JD when he was 11 as an egg.

When Bruce left Brozone he had two Pokemon, now he has six. (All water types)

Bruce doesn't know if he can ever fully forgive JD for what happened, but also recognizes that hating him forever won't make anyone feel better.

Bruce and Brandy have been happily married for 13 years, dating for 17 years.

For a while Bruce struggled with his body image, but Brandy helped him get past that and now he's happier than ever

Used to be the worst at surfing but will never admit it, claiming he was always a natural

Misses all of his brothers, but feels conflicted about missing JD

Clay

Clay had turned 13 the day before everyone left; now he is 35

Clays first Pokemon was a qbone named Wilbur

Clay vows that he will never forgive JD for what he did

Clay had 1 Pokemon when we left Brozone, now he has 3.

His pokemon are either electric types or ground types.

Clay loves reading so much he tried to teach his pokemon how to read.

Every night he reads his pokemon a bedtime story.

He doesn't like keeping his pokemon in pokeballs.

He misses Bruce the most and sometimes wonders how Floyd and Branch are, but can't bring himslef to go look for them.

Floyd

Floyd was 11 when everyone split up; he is now 33

Floyds first Pokemon was a spirgatito named Rosey

Floyd decided to start a solo career and is now a dark type gym leader.

Floyd only had Rosey when he left, he now has 6 Pokemon.

Floyd has had a few relationships but has yet to settle with anyone.

Floyd has dyslexia as well but unlike JD doesn't shy away from telling people.

After some thinking Floyd thinks he could forgive John Dory if he ever found him again.

He misses his brothers but is too busy to go looking for them.

Branch

Branch was two years old when everyone split, making him 24 now.

As Branch was only 2 when everyone split he didn't have a pokemon.

Branch has only ever had one Pokemon; a sandile named Gary.

However Gary has evolved into a krokorok by the time the brothers reunite.

Branch found Gary when he was building his bunker and ever since then they've stayed side by side.

Gary actually doesn't have a pokeball, he just chooses to stay around Branch, despite his grumpiness.

Branch has a hard time remembering his brothers, and every year it seems he remembers less and less.

Branch however will never forget what John Dory did, but he's not sure he hates him for what he did, just that he left.

Branch has autism and OCD.

Branch also has a fear of abandonment

Haha, I had that exact same question fairly recently, so I did some Googling to try and figure out what the heck a "ブリーダー" (breeder) really entails. In short? "Educator."

If anyone's ever watched the Pokemon anime, you know how Brock is called a Pokemon breeder? It's not because he literally breeds Pokemon together to make new Pokemon--instead, he focuses on raising his existing Pokemon to grow up happy and healthy. Pokemon breeders focus on keeping their Pokemon well-groomed, like particularly invested pet owners. In Japanese, the notion of keeping/raising a pet is intertwined with bringing up and teaching kids (same verb, 養う). Then in the verse the "top breeder" line appears in, Sasara and Roshou are doing a mini manzai act themed around teaching in a nod to Roshou's teaching career. Through the use of some of the images in the song, he compares the slapstick used in manzai to physical violence associated with training (think a lion tamer with a whip) and ties that back into the universal "Yeah, yeah, I'm so cool, I'm the best rapper ever and I'm beating you with my sick-ass lyrics!" thing that's in every Hypmic rap ever. That's the マイク握れば容赦はしない 教育し直す恐怖の一夜 part: "Once I have my mic, you're a goner. Watch out, I'm going to re-educate you so hard!" sort of feeling. The しつける ("disciplinary") is part of that too--"disciplining" or teaching or training. Which in turn falls under the same umbrella of 養う, bringing up or teaching kids. To make a long story short, it's tying together several ideas that usually aren't associated in English, which is why this line causes such confusion with English audiences. But he's essentially saying "I'm an amazing teacher, and I'm just as amazing at 'schooling' you with my mic." That's my understanding of it. This rap is definitely one of the more obtuse ones, though.

Pokemon professors should react to you catching certain Pokemon, especially if they made your pokedex.

A bunch of these Pokemon predate the fossil records which, yeah maybe you found a groundbreaking discovery and revived those ones. Then I see all these robots which look really fake or you broke into some kind of government facility building these robots. Scrolling into the national dex I'm looking at some questionable Pokemon which I can't confirm are Pokemon and look like they come from another dimension. Going even further down the list it looks like you not only caught many major deities, but also god himself. You caught the entire bible and now I have to reevaluate my beliefs as you just confirmed that there is not only a heaven, but also a hell. I'm giving you a passing grade and I'm going to contemplate my life and career now."

I also have some more eeveelutions (plus an eevee and a few more) but: 1. I didn't want to send too many. 2. Eeveelutions are more popular so I wanted to give some other people the chance to submit their own. 3. I don't know where my Pikachu and Snivy plushies are cuz I own too many stuffed animals.

Only reason I submitted Leafeon was so I could show off this ~masterpiece~ of a plushie I own. And it's face isn't the only thing wrong with it too lol. Also I just noticed I accidentally had one of the ears hanging back but I'm too lazy to go take another photo but i hope this amuses you nonetheless.

YEAH it's super unbelievably fucked up. i think i kinda remember the circumstance being a bit dire so everyone else was more worried about either 1. protagonist getting stomped on brutally or 2. saving the world from kyurem / the bittercold. i was totally under the impression that he was dead in that moment but i guess the characters may have known that he would just come back? i seem to vaguely remember partner being surprised that he came back and being like "but we watched you die :OOO" but maybe i'm misremembering that. i do create a lot of pmd lore on my own time so i have a hard time telling the difference between canon and fanon sometimes
